We live in a complicated world. And with the explosion of AI tools over the past year that promise to blur the line between the real and the imaginary, it isn’t looking like life will get any simpler in the foreseeable future.

Welcome to the Digital Dialogues discussion series. Over the next several months, the BC Museums Association will be joined by experts, innovators, and critical thinkers to discuss the societal effects of technology to equip the sector with the tools to make ethical equity-informed steps toward digital innovation.

In the rush to embrace new and seemingly innovative technologies, it can be easy to start using these tools in our work without first thinking about their broader social, environmental, and cultural impacts. The Digital Dialogues series is designed to complement the 2023 gathering on Haida Gwaii, to help make additional space for important discussions that can’t fit into the agenda and to help continue dialogues sparked at the event.

To learn more about this discussion series, visit: https://museum.bc.ca/brain/digital-dialogues-series

The Digital Dialogues are supported by funding from the Canada Council for the Arts.

In the early months of the global pandemic and amidst community lockdowns, the Council of the Haida Nation virtually gathered the community over a series of six webinars on food security. These webinars raised awareness of and highlighted emerging needs and conflicts relating to Haida Gwaii’s food system, and about food security and emergency preparedness for its residents. Over the course of the series it became clear there was a need for a coordinated food strategy and food policy toolbox. This kicked-off the development of the Haida Gwaii Food Strategy (HGFS), as administered by the Haida Gwaii Museum.

In this BCMA Podcast episode, hear from two Haida Gwaii residents engaged in these efforts to strengthen local, sustainable food systems and how the HGFS will, in part, serve as a public repository of local food system knowledge.

In the second episode of Queer(y)ing Museums, BCMA’s Desirée Hall and Tanya Pacholok chat with Amelia Smith, a transgender lesbian emerging museum professional who holds a Master of Museum Studies from the University of Toronto.

In this episode, Amelia shares with us about her approaches to exhibition design and community engagement; how cisgender privilege shows up in museum spaces and in how we talk about trans histories; thinking about audience engagement and who we are designing exhibits for, and more.

Amelia's work seeks to bridge the gap between transgender studies and queer museology. Upon finding little addressing this topic, she took it upon herself to create it. Her website "Not Your Average Cistory" has grown into a home for exploring the various ways that museums can be viewed through a transgender lens. In this fifth episode of our ongoing Climate Leadership & Action for Museums podcast series, we speak with Yimin Chen, a PhD candidate in Library and Information Science in the Faculty of Information and Media Studies at the University of Western Ontario.

His research examines the communicative practices of online communities and cultures, with a focus on Internet trolling behaviours and the controversy surrounding them. His previous projects range from fake news and deception detection, to library automation, to the impact of political memes on social media.

In a world choked with fake news and online misinformation, museums have the potential to leverage the publics’ trust to help communities discern reality from fiction when exploring topics like climate change. In this conversation, we explore the history of online misinformation, why some people choose to act like trolls, and why some online accounts might not even be people at all.

A brief word of warning - this podcast contains explicit language in the context of internet culture and online movements.

On November 3rd, the Royal BC Museum announced that it would begin closing sections of its existing galleries to embark on a process of community consultation to decolonize long-established exhibits, increase cultural safety in the museum, and ensure that the Provincial museum is a welcoming place for everyone.

This announcement has sparked new conversations exploring what it means to decolonize a museum, and whether it is even possible to decolonize an institution that was born from the very process of colonization itself.

To help contribute to this dialogue the BC Museums Association is sharing the opening address from our 2021 virtual conference as an episode of our podcast.

On October 7th we were joined by Brandie MacDonald from the Museum of Us for a talk entitled, Pausing to Decolonize: Decolonizing Museum Policy and Practice. Brandie is the Senior Director of Decolonizing Initiatives at Museum of Us, residing on the homeland of Kumeyaay Nation in San Diego, California, USA.

Brandie’s work focuses on systemic change within museums through the implementation of anti-colonial and decolonial theory-in-practice, which centers truth-telling, accountability, and tangible change to redress colonial harm. Her 12 years working in non-profits is based around capacity building through transformative policy, repatriation, and education.

In her talk, Brandie discusses the work that Museum of Us has been doing to transform their organization, the decolonial work that she is leading, and the guiding principles they have adopted.

Thank you to the Culture Resource Management program at the University of Victoria for sponsoring this conference opening address.

In this fourth episode of our #CALM series, we speak with Tara Fraser (Vancouver Art Gallery) and Heidi Swierenga (Museum of Anthropology at UBC), two members of the BC Heritage Emergency Response Network (BC HERN) steering committee. Tara, Heidi, and volunteers from BC HERN were able to go to Lytton BC in October to assist with the salvage and recovery of items from the Lytton Chinese History Museum and the Lytton Museum & Archives.

Join Tara and Heidi as they reflect upon this experience and how it will help to inform BC HERN's future work.

The BC Heritage Emergency Response Network is a growing consortium of art, culture and heritage professionals and volunteers in BC who feel morally and professionally obliged to plan for emergency situations and to support other cultural institutions in the event of localized emergencies that impact collections. The initiative was born from the identified lack of a unified support plan for disaster response and collections salvage in the province in light of the growing risk to collections due to climate change.

The BC HERN aims to build confidence to ensure the successful recovery of heritage collections. The formation of the network is based on two principles: establishing connections between institutions, and training individuals in these institutions on collections salvage procedures. Once staff are trained in salvage and recovery, their institutions will be incorporated into the growing number of response zones throughout the Province.

In this third episode of our #CALM series, we speak with Tara Fraser (Vancouver Art Gallery) and Heidi Swierenga (Museum of Anthropology at UBC), two members of the BC Heritage Emergency Response Network (BC HERN) steering committee.

Today we’re joined by Bryce Mathew Watts, from The VR Voyage, to explore virtual tours. COVID has forced the industry to rethink how it reaches its audience and how it can broaden its audience through new technologies. The VR Voyage is a new virtual reality platform that is helping BC museums, along with other partners around the world, to create guided virtual tours of their institutions. With the launch of the platform in early 2021, people from anywhere in the world can explore your collection and learn about what makes your institution so unique.

With free production costs, generous revenue share schemes, and free marketing services, The VR Voyage is a new way to build new revenue streams and adapt to a rapidly changing world. The idea was developed by UBC alumnus and anthropologist Bryce Mathew Watts. With strong partnerships, this platform will be a way to enter a new technological era and further the education mandates of BC museums.

Today we're joined by Dr. Rob Lennox to explore the concept of advocacy for the museums and heritage sector.

Rob is a Senior Advocacy Coordinator at the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists in the UK where he undertakes advocacy work to influence policy-makers and maintain relationships with external stakeholders. Rob completed his Ph.D. in 2016 exploring the regulation of the historic environment through government policy instruments and the impact that political processes have on the application of sectoral value-driven visions.

Through his research and work, Rob aims to develop and demonstrate a strategic understanding of the heritage sector and of its political machinations, as well as of conservation philosophy and operations in the planning system.

Outside of his advocacy work, Rob is a keen mountaineer, hiker, and skiier and enjoys birding. As an enjoyer of nature and mountains, Rob has a deep appreciation and interest in British Columbia.

Rob also recommends the following resources for those interested in expanding their advocacy toolkits:

  1. Fighting for Birds by Mark Avery (A fantastic book, possibly not packed with directly relevant skills for the budding BC museums campaigner, but it shows the passion and dedication of nature conservation campaigners in the UK and will explain why advocacy is a long game)
  2. From Voice to Influence: Understanding Citizenship in a Digital Age by D Allen & J Light (There is a lot to learn about 'new' advocacy, and it's developing all around us. But politics is changing all the time. This book looks at how we communicate around political issues and how we translate that into participatory power.)
  3. Many charities have excellent advocacy resources. There are too many to mention, but The National Council for Voluntary Organisations is a great example from the UK (https://knowhow.ncvo.org.uk/campaigns) but you may wish to search closer to home.
  4. Learn from other campaigns! You can look at different organisations, but the Museums Association in the UK has lots of information about past and current campaigns on its website: https://www.museumsassociation.org/campaigns
  5. Hope For the Future is for a climate change-focused local advocacy organisation! They've got some really clear advice on letter writing and other things (https://www.hftf.org.uk/template-letters)

Accession Consulting supported our organizations in conducting this study and join us in this podcast to discuss their findings and themes that museums and heritage organizations can use to advocate for the important roles they play in communities across the province.

On May 20, 2020, the Creston Museum reopened to the public, making it one of the first museums in the province to reopen after the COVID-19 public health orders. To see what their first few days of being reopened were like and how they approached adapting their site to our new reality, today I’m joined by Tammy Bradford, Manager of the Creston Museum.

As museums, galleries, and heritage spaces around the province continue to reopen, we hope to continue recording podcasts to document their experiences and share lessons learned with other organizations who are in the process of reopening. To stay up-to-date with our latest news and member resources, visit our website or follow the BCMA on social media.
