Born to a family of skiers in Lake Tahoe, Brette Harrington has become an icon in the world of alpine climbing. She is an accomplished 5.13+ trad climber, calculated soloist, expert ski mountaineer, big wall sender, and graceful mixed climber and her versatility is a testament to her dedication and passion for the sport.

In 2013, at the young age of 23, Brette catapulted to international climbing fame when she daringly free soloed the 2,500-ft Chiaro di Luna (5.11a) in Patagonia. Her exceptional talents earned her the American Alpine Club's prestigious Robert Hicks Bates Award, honoring young climbers with outstanding promise for future accomplishments.

Brette's love for the outdoors began during her youth in Lake Tahoe, where she was raised by avid skiers. She competed in slopestyle skiing throughout high school and college, attending a ski academy in New Hampshire and later studying in British Columbia. However, a series of concussions and a broken neck at 20 led Brette to abandon competitive skiing and explore rock climbing.

By 2017, Brette had set her sights on winter alpine climbing, relishing the mental and physical challenges it presented.

During this time, she opened routes on the Taku Towers on the Juneau Ice Field and made the first ascent of Life Compass (IV 5.10a M4+) in Alberta. In 2019, Brette tackled the most formidable alpine route of her career: a first ascent of the East Face of Alberta's Mt. Fay, which she and her partners dubbed "Sound of Silence."

As Brette looks to the future, she is excited about expedition climbing, particularly in Peru and Pakistan. However, she finds immense satisfaction in the Canadian Rockies, where the loose limestone helps her address her weaknesses and the relief presents Himalayan-scale prominence without the high altitude.

The vast, unending range offers a lifetime of technical climbs, and for Brette, the more technical, the better.

This week I am sharing an interview I did on the Health Hacks Podcast with host Mark White. Here's the description from Mark's show:

The link to the Health Hacks Podcast is here: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/protect-your-energy-optimize-your-health-supercharge/id1468178367?i=1000608660088

Welcome to the latest episode of Health Hacks with Mark L. White! In this episode, we are thrilled to have Greg Wells, Ph.D., as our special guest. Dr. Wells is a scientist, physiologist, and bestselling author who has dedicated his career to helping people optimize their health and performance. In this episode, we will be diving into the topic of Powerhouse - Protect Your Energy, Optimize Your Health & Supercharge Your Performance.

Dr. Wells will be sharing his expert insights on how we can protect our energy levels, optimize our health, and supercharge our performance to achieve our goals and live our best lives. Dr. Wells will be sharing practical tips and strategies that you can implement into your daily routine to improve your overall health and well-being. From optimizing your sleep to managing stress, he will be covering a range of topics that will help you achieve your health and performance goals.

So, whether you are an athlete looking to improve your performance or someone who simply wants to optimize their health, this episode is a must-watch. So, sit back, relax, and join us for an enlightening discussion with Dr. Greg Wells on Health Hacks with Mark L. White. More about this episode: We have all faced unprecedented challenges during the pandemic, and now more than ever, it is critical to prioritize our health and wellbeing while maintaining high performance.

To address this reality the purpose and focus of the book is on helping people to have better energy and health via optimizing our mitochondria so that we can all create an upward spiral of wellness and peak performance. When we look into the physiology it becomes apparent that our health and human potential is 4 billion years in the making. Our mitochondria are small structures in all our cells that create the energy that we use to move, to think, to perform and to lead. The wonderful thing is that we can make create more of them to get more energy, we can make them stronger so we are more resilient, and we can heal them so we can be healthier in mind and body.

The key principles in Powerhouse are all based on the physiology of “hormesis” – simply that a little is good, a lot is not. For example, 3 minutes of meditation each day can improve brain function. Five minutes of cold water can sharpen your focus and improve mental health. A 15-minute walk decreases your risk of cancer but also improves problem solving and innovation thinking. Small micro wins daily can lead to exponential gains in health and wellbeing. The Powerhouse book is grounded in the latest scientific research and demonstrates how to elevate your energy, shift from tension to flow, and build your performance capacity.

Through the framework of breathe, move, energize, and thrive, I’ve tried my best to show people how to take concrete steps towards healthy high performance. Key Learnings:

• Why the science of human energy is 4 billion years in the making. • How to breathe for relaxation, focus and consistent energy. • How activity can spark concentration, creativity, and innovation. • How stress can be a powerful spark for positive mental and physical growth. • What practices lead to a life where we can thrive personally and professionally.

This week I interviewed Professor Joe Baker from York University in Toronto Canada.

Professor Joe Baker is a leading expert in the field of optimal human development and sport skill development. He currently holds a position in the School of Kinesiology and Health Science at York University.

Throughout his career, Professor Baker has dedicated his research to understanding how individuals can reach and maintain the highest levels of performance in various sports. His work considers a wide range of psychosocial and environmental factors that influence athletic skill development, with the goal of cataloguing the numerous factors that affect an athlete's ability to maximize their potential. This research aims to inform the development of stronger policies, the building of better theories and models, and the construction of superior learning environments.

Professor Baker's research primarily focuses on two main areas. The first area examines the diverse factors that influence athlete skill development. He is currently studying the development and maintenance of skilled performance in both able-bodied and Paralympic sports, working with leading athlete development systems worldwide to advance our understanding of how individuals reach and maintain high levels of performance.

The second area of focus is on notions of 'talent' in sport. Despite its prominence in public discourse, there is a lack of understanding of what the term 'talent' means and how it affects sport programming. Professor Baker's research in this area concentrates on improving decisions made in talent identification and selection settings, working with leaders in high-performance and professional sport to understand the efficiency and effectiveness of various approaches and models to talent evaluation and development.

In addition to his work in high-performance sport, Professor Baker also applies models of athlete learning and development to understand how to maximize function and performance in non-elite populations. Specifically, he has examined how Masters Athletes (those over 50 years of age) can inform a deeper understanding of what older adults are capable of achieving in terms of performance.

This week I’m excited to talk with Stéphane Grenier. His vision is a world where people no longer face barriers to good mental health.

Stéphane’s riveting keynotes are thought-provoking and lead to tangible action and sustainable change for leaders who are prepared to rethink how they support their people.

His autobiography, After the War: Surviving PTSD and Changing Mental Health Culture, tells his story from the day he landed amid the Rwandan genocide, through his journey of changing mental health culture in the Canadian military, developing national Guidelines for Peer Support with the Mental Health Commission of Canada, all the way to creating Mental Health Innovations (MHI); a consultancy that leads innovative and sustainable change in organizations to enhance the mental health of their people.

Today, he and his business partners, along with countless associates, develop non-clinical mental health interventions to complement traditional clinical care for private and public sector organizations and provincial healthcare systems.

As mental health is a huge challenge right now, this is a very applicable conversation and beneficial for all of us.

This week I had the privilege of talking to Olympic Champion Kyle Shewfelt!

Kyle began his gymnastics career at the age of 6 when his mother was tired of him cartwheeling around the house. She and his father enrolled Kyle in gymnastics lessons at their local club as an outlet for his energy. Kyle’s passion for the sport quickly ignited and he soon realized it would be a lifelong pursuit.

Kyle is a three-time Olympian and a multiple World Championship, Commonwealth Games, and World Cup medalist. His gold medal performance in the men’s floor exercise at the 2004 Olympics was the first-ever medal for a Canadian in an artistic gymnastics event and was the first Canadian gold of the 2004 Olympics.

Kyle is known for the courage he showed in the face of adversity. After breaking his legs on a bad landing in 2007, he embarked on the biggest challenge of his career and had just 11 months to recover in time for the 2008 games. He qualified and his comeback inspired many young gymnasts.

Now Kyle’s focus is in involving and engaging others. After retiring from competition in 2009, Kyle is still heavily involved in the sport and the community. He has been an expert analyst for both CBC and CTV’s coverage of gymnastics. Kyle is an ambassador and mentor for Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique and he works closely with numerous charity organizations including Kidsport, Special Olympics and Right To Play. In addition, he sits on the board of directors for the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport and was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

Above all else, Kyle is a perpetual optimist who enjoys helping others reach their potential. He believes in the power of a high five and is excited to connect everyone to the foundation of the sport he loves so much.

We discuss his learnings from being involved in sport and his future vision of a safe space around sport.

"If you want to make something that's like nothing you've made before, then you have to shake yourself up, go beyond whats comfortable and known and let yourself feel disoriented, overwhelmed, even intimidated. Those moments, when you lose your bearings or where you're forced to sink or swim, and the moments when you have an opportunity to rise to the occasion, to surprise yourself, to do the things you didn't know you could do. That's what making this album was for me, I'm so proud of the process, and I'm so proud of the result.” - Peter Katz

Welcome back!

As we near the end of 2019, I want to totally change up the direction and share a conversation that I had with Brent Jensen on his No Sleep Til Sudbury podcast. Brent's podcast is all about music and the power certain songs have on us. On his podcast, Brent talks about those songs and about how music tells us who we are.

In this conversation, we dig into my five favourite songs and why I chose them, how they relate to different points in my life, and how I think about music. I think this conversation is really relevant as we enter into the holidays and have a chance to listen to more music.

We’re also learning more about the effect that music has on our mental health. We're discovering that music can be used as a specific treatment for mental health challenges, especially depression. Recently I was privileged to go to the launch of an initiative called the Awesome Music Project, designed to raise awareness and funds for mental health research across the country.

So please enjoy my conversation on amazing music with Brent Jensen!

Hi everyone, welcome back!

Today I had the amazing opportunity to talk with Mark Black, a Heart and Double-Lung Transplant recipient, turned four-time marathon runner, author, coach, and speaker.

Mark was born with a life-threatening heart defect, and before the age of one underwent two open-heart surgeries. When he was 22, he was told that he needed a heart and double-lung transplant. So Mark moved thousands of kilometres from home and was put on the transplant waiting list, much of that time spent living in the hospital as his condition grew worse. Finally, after almost a year on the list, Mark received a second chance at life: a life-saving Heart and Double-Lung Transplant.

Three years later, he became the only man in history to complete a marathon with someone else’s heart and lungs. He has since run three more marathons.

Since receiving his second chance at life Mark hasn’t wasted a moment. Mark has travelled the globe speaking to more than 150,000 people. He delivers practical and life-changing insight on how to flourish in challenging times, break through self-imposed barriers that limit your development and growth, and transform adversity into your competitive advantage.

If you want to gain a little bit of inspiration and also learn some very specific insights into how you can overcome obstacles, then this is going to be something that you are going to be absolutely fascinated by.

Please enjoy my conversation with Mark Black!

Hey everyone welcome back!

I am beyond excited for today’s podcast. I’ve been trying for about four years to get John Ratey on the show. John is a Clinical Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. He has written nine books including “Spark, The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain”. This book really dives deep into the science of exercise and the brain, and how we can use exercise to improve outcomes in ADD, ADHD, addiction, depression, anxiety, and stress. It also explores how exercise can improve learning and outcomes in aging. More recently he’s written a book called “Go Wild: Free Your Body and Mind from the Afflictions of Civilization”, which is all about nature and community.

These are all topics that I am interested in and have been exploring for a long time. The ability to actually dive into that with the author and a Harvard professor is just beyond exciting for me. So, let’s dive right into this deep exploration of Spark, the Revolutionary Science of Exercise and the Brain.

Enjoy!

Hey everyone welcome back!

Today I had a chance to chat to my old friend Ziya Tong. Ziya anchored Daily Planet, Discovery Channel's flagship science program until its final season in 2018. She also hosted CBC’s Emmy-nominated series ZeD, PBS’ national primetime series Wired Science, and worked as a correspondent for Nova ScienceNow alongside Neil deGrasse Tyson on PBS.

Ziya has a new book out called “The Reality Bubble: Blind Spots, Hidden Truths, and the Dangerous Illusions that Shape our World”. This is the summary of the book: From one of the world's most engaging science journalists, a groundbreaking and wonder-filled look at the hidden things that shape our lives in unexpected and sometimes dangerous ways. Our naked eyes see only a thin sliver of reality. We are blind in comparison to the X-rays that peer through the skin, the mass spectrometers that detect the dead inside the living, or the high-tech surveillance systems that see with artificial intelligence. And we are blind compared to the animals that can see in infrared, or ultraviolet, or in 360 degree vision. These animals live in the same world that we do, but they see something quite different when they look around. With all of the curiosity and flair that drives her broadcasting, Ziya Tong illuminates this hidden world and takes us on a journey to examine ten of humanity's biggest blind spots.

During this interview we dig into all of those topics - we talk about global warming, science, curiosity, and just have a great conversation about these ideas and what really defines our reality. So I hope that you enjoy this conversation with Ziya Tong!

Welcome back everyone!

Today I have an incredible story for you. I had the amazing opportunity to sit down with Chris Norton.

After a devastating football injury in his freshman year of college, Chris was told he had a 3% chance of moving anything below his neck again. However, after years of intensive rehab, Chris somehow defied the medical community and was able to walk across the stage for his college diploma.

Since then, Chris has become one of the most sought-after motivational speakers, inspiring people with his message of hope, resilience, and faith. In 2018, Chris was named to ITA Group's list of "The Hottest Event Keynote Speakers". Chris and his family also started the SCI CAN Foundation, which has raised close to one million dollars to help others with spinal cord injuries and other neurological disorders.

One of his greatest feats was when he walked down the aisle to marry his wife Emily. They have since fostered 17 and adopted five children. Chris and Emily have recently written a memoir "The Seven Longest Yards: Our Love Story of Pushing the Limits While Leaning on Each Other". Chris and Emily's story of love, challenges, and commitment will be available in July 2019.

Please enjoy one of the most inspirational interviews with Chris Norton.

Hey everyone welcome back!

Today we're going to go back to sports and interview Kylie Masse, a Canadian Olympic swimmer. In the 2016 Summer Games, Kylie tied for bronze in the 100 metre backstroke. At the 2017 World Championships, Kylie broke the world record in that event, becoming the first Canadian woman to become a world champion in a swimming event.

I grew up swimming and did it all the way through college, and so it remains a passion of mine. I actually had Kylie in one of my classes at the University of Toronto and I watched her develop into being a world record holder and Olympic medalist. With the World Championships coming up this summer, I thought this would be a good time to connect with Kylie and get some insight about what her history was like as a young athlete, key factors that led to her being successful, and how she manages competition and training.

It's pretty cool to have a few minutes with someone who is absolutely the best in history at what they do. So please enjoy my conversation with Kylie Masse.

Today we’re going in a different direction and chatting with country music singer and songwriter Tim Nichols. With nearly two dozen smash hits, multiple BMI songwriting awards, a Grammy for Best Country Song, as well as recently being a 2017 Nashville songwriter Hall of Fame inductee, Tim Nichols has earned his place amongst Nashville's most elite and respected tunesmiths.

In 2004 Nichols co-wrote Tim McGraw's “Live Like You Were Dying,” which stayed at number one for ten consecutive weeks. In addition to breaking a 30-year record, “Live Like You Were Dying” won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 2005. It also won Song of the Year Award from the Country Music Association, Academy of Country Music, BMI Country Awards, ASCAP Country Awards, Billboard, and the Nashville Songwriters Association International. It is the only song to have won every major song award that is presented for country music.

Feeling the importance of giving back to the community and the industry, Nichols has served on the board of directors for the Country Music Association, the Nashville Songwriters Association International, and the High Hopes Preschool and Pediatric Therapy Clinic, which serves children with special needs in Nashville and surrounding counties of middle Tennessee.

This interview is all about the process of creating. We uncover a few nuggets around the creative process and what it takes to be as prolific and productive as Tim has been over the last twenty five years.

Please enjoy my very powerful chat with my buddy Tim Nichols!

Welcome back everyone!

Today we are revisiting one of the very best interviews from my previous podcast, with Dr. Bill Howatt.

As Chief Research and Development Officer at Morneau Shepell, Bill is an internationally recognized expert in mental health who has spent 25 years helping employees, patients, and leaders achieve their potential. Bill has a PhD in Organizational Psychology, did post-doctoral training at UCLA, has developed programs with organizations like the Conference Board of Canada and the University of New Brunswick, and is author of numerous books and articles, including regular contributions to The Globe and Mail.

As I’m sure you know we're faced with a tremendous mental illness epidemic. Around one in five people will access the medical system at some point because of a mental health related challenge. However, much like cancer in the 1950s and AIDS in the 1980s, there is a stigma around talking about mental health challenges.

In this conversation Bill has an amazing ability to explain all of these topics and really explore in great detail where exactly we need to go in the future if we're going to actually address this particular challenge. So I hope that you enjoy this conversation with the amazing, brilliant, and insightful Dr. Bill Howatt.

Welcome back!

Today we're going to revisit an interview with Lisa Bentley that I posted on my previous podcast.

Although she is primarily regarded as one of the best Ironman athletes in the world, Lisa spent the first eight years of her triathlon career racing Olympic distance and representing Canada on several national elite teams at the World Championships and the 1995 Pan Am Games. In 1997, Lisa switched her focus to the Ironman distance, winning her first long distance event, Strongman Japan, and breaking the course record by 19 minutes. She placed ninth in her first Ironman World Championships, beginning a progressive rank improvement that culminated in a third place win at the 26 Ironman World Championships. Over the course of her career she has won eleven Ironmans and sixteen 70.3 Half Ironman distances, and achieved several top five finishes at Ironman World Championships. She had at least one Ironman victory for each year from 2000-2007 and was ranked among the top five triathletes in the world for over a decade.

Lisa competed at the highest level in Ironman despite having cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease resulting in chronic infections and limited lung capacity. Lisa came to see CF as a blessing, fuelling her passion for sport and excellence. Every race gave families hope that their children with CF could achieve similar things in life.

Since she retired from pro sport in 2009, Lisa has been doing marathons, doing motivational speaking, providing television commentary for CTV Olympic Swim coverage, and CBC triathlon and Sportsnet Ironman coverage. She coaches and does sales and marketing work for other triathletes and triathlon events. She is also an advocate for CF, women in sport, and equality in sport.

I'm honoured to have her on the show. Her new book is out called “An Unlikely Champion: Finding a path to fulfillment and winning in life”. She is an amazing human being and you are going to absolutely love this interview.

Enjoy!

Welcome back!

This week we have an incredible interview with someone who I grew up tracking and idolizing - Silken Laumann.

From broken bones and shredded muscle to Olympic glory, Silken’s story is one of courage, perseverance, and the triumph of the human spirit. In May of 1992 just 10 weeks before the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Silken was injured in a brutal rowing accident that left her right leg shattered and deeply injured. She was reigning world champion in single sculls rowing, but her doctor told her that she might never row again. Twenty seven days, five operations, and countless hours of gruelling rehab later, she was back in her rowing shell and began to pursue her Olympic dream all over again. On August 2nd 1992, Silken made the greatest comeback in Canadian sports history and one of the greatest comebacks in all of sports history, winning a bronze medal at the Olympics and ultimately capturing the hearts of millions of people.

Now retired from rowing with three Olympic medals, she has continued to inspire and encourage people to dream, live in the moment, and embrace failure as a stepping stone to progress. She has launched a new initiative called We Are Unsinkable, which is gathering stories from people who have overcome obstacles in their lives and sharing those to help other people become inspired.

I'm really excited about having Silken on the show. We do a review of her entire sporting history, learn a lot about the challenges that she faced after the Olympics were over, and ultimately landing this incredible new initiative that she's launching.

You can check her out on all of her social media which are listed at her website silkenlaumann.com and at weareunsinkable.com. Her story is unbelievable and I think you're going to love this conversation.

World class triathlete Paula Findlay’s journey into the sport of triathlon began first as a swimmer which she been doing since she was 10 years old. Paula won the junior and senior national championships in 2008. She took another major step forward in 2009 when she finished third at the Under-23 World Championships. In 2010, Paula shocked the world becoming the first Canadian triathlete to win a World Championship Series event -- on the now-famous Hyde Park course in London, England. Paula at the time was just turned 21 and she was ranked No. 1 in the world. From late June 2011 through to the Olympics in London and most of 2013, a nagging hip injury limited Findlay to just five events, one of which she did not start, another of which she did not finish, and a disappointing performance at the London Olympics. A healthy Findlay is back to elite racing with some impressive results in both half iron man and iron man distance triathlons.

Flow states are some of the most incredible experiences you can have as a human being. They occur when we engage in an activity that completely consumes our attention and challenges us at exactly the right level. Maybe you are exercising at a new level and it feels easy. Maybe you are working, lose all track of time and get five times as much done. Maybe you are having an amazing conversation over dinner with a group of people or sitting on a beach coming up with a new solution to an old problem. Flow states are absolutely incredible, and they have been a reference point for guests on this podcast over and over again. So I wanted to share with you a condensed version of The Power of Flow, which explores what happens when you get into that state, how you can deliberately activate it and what it can do for you. It is a simple idea that can make a huge difference in your life, so check out my presentation on the POWER OF FLOW.

In this era of constant, unrelenting distraction, I have become more and more and more convinced that focus is a prerequisite for any sort of world-class performance. You cannot perform well if you are distracted, and I don't think you can be particularly healthy either. I think mental health depends, to some extent, on our ability to control and maintain our attention. I've also worked with hundreds of Olympians and seen how much the ability to sustain a consistent level of focus is crucial for world-class performance. I wanted to explore this topic in more depth, so I did a presentation on The Power of Focus. I recorded the audio and have pulled it out to share with you. I’d love to hear your thoughts about how you focus, what you use focus for and what challenges you face in maintaining it. As part of our ongoing conversation about better health and human performance, please enjoy my presentation on THE POWER OF FOCUS.

In this episode, I want to share an idea with you that I call The Power of Challenge. I've been studying how people overcome obstacles in their lives to put themselves on a better trajectory. It’s really interesting to think about mental health and how we can help people move into a space where they maximize their potential. I gave a session recently exploring The Power of Challenge and recorded it, so I wanted to share it with you. This is sort of new thinking for me, and I’d love your opinions and comments about your experience with this and how you apply it in your life. The more we can create a conversation around this, the better, because mental health is one of the biggest issues we're faced with today. So here we go. Let me know what you think of this session I did recently on the POWER OF CHALLENGE.

Hello everyone! It’s great to be with you. Today, I want to share an interview I did with Jonathan Levi on his Becoming Superhuman podcast. Jonathan is an extraordinary guy, and the interview was full of insights as we talked back and forth about human performance. A bit about Jonathan: after successfully selling his Inc. 5,000-rated startup in 2011, Jonathan spent time in Israel, where he enlisted the help of speed-reading expert and university professor Anna Goldentouch and machine learning expert Dr. Lev Gold. These two tutored him in speed-reading, advanced memorization, and other mental performance techniques. Jonathan applied these techniques during his MBA at INSEAD and saw incredible results. He was overwhelmed by the interest his classmates showed in his superlearning skill set, so he decided to pursue the field full time. Since then, he has become a proficient lifehacker and industry-leading guru in the optimization of processes such as travel, sleep & language learning.

Welcome back! John Foley's personal path to high performance began as a child when he stood alongside his father at an air show featuring the Blue Angels. From that moment John knew that someday he'd be carving up the skies as a member of the Blues. Eventually he lived that dream. But getting there wasn't easy. In fact, John's journey from an awestruck child at an air show to the cockpit of the Blue Angels F-18 Hornet -one of my favorite planes - is a study in persistence, hard work and the will to overcome obstacles and setbacks.

John graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with a degree in mechanical engineering. John was a top 10 carrier pilot six times before becoming a Marine instructor pilot and a Blue Angel.

He holds a Master’s degree in Business Management from the Stanford Graduate School of Business where he's a Sloan Fellow and he has an International Policy Studies degree also from Stanford University and he has a degree in strategic studies from the Naval War College.
