Rough Sketch is a Podcast that is designed to explore creativity. We talk to creative people about their process and set them an improv drawing challenge. Scheduled to release one episode a month on the first Friday of the month.
We were contacted by Oscar Osario a writer from Peru who has been busy working on a comic all about a writer looking for an idea and dealing with ADHD. We chatted about Oscar leaving his corporate job, the state of comics in Peru and his enthusiasm for writing stories about real people.

Logan Rogers from Cloakroom Comics got in touch with us to tell us all about the Tales From The Cloakroom Vol 2, an upcoming Kickstarter that should be releasing in May. We sat down with them and fellow editor Jason Holtzman for a chat about the project, how the team got together over Scott Snyders' Our Best Jackett substack and the upcoming appearances they have at C2E2. We then created a pirate DJ who was ready to dominate the seas with their beats, all the while wearing a comedy ship as a head in a similar form to Deadmau5. Who would have thought that a Podcast exploring the crossover between theater and table top RPGs was a thing that Chris needed but turns out it was. When he found the podcast via Twitter he found it equal parts intriguing, delightful, informative and slightly confusing but it's now on his "regular listen" list.
We are delighted that the cast came onto our show and created stuff with us. We thank them for taking the time to explain a few things and dive into creation.

We are joined by Dan Tyrie and Karl Dudás from the Explorers of Elsewhere Youtube channel and The Tavern Between Dimensions Podcast, both of which are creators in their own right. We talk to them about what makes a good DM, what makes a good story and juggling time between their passions, hobbies and full-time jobs.
We then roll some dice and attempt a bit of a Christmas story that pairs robots with Die Hard and Danny Devito as an unexpected guest appearance.

It's rare that we get a chance to chat with Improvisors but we aim to take the chance whenever we can. Jorin has been doing improv since 1991 and Chris had the opportunity to take two classes with him at the Robin Hood International Improv festival in Nottingham in September 2022. He too the opportunity to ask him tto come onto the show and we really appreciate him saying yes. Jorin gave us such a wordy, cerebal and fun conversation about his history with Improv and creativity.

It's not often that we get to chat with theatre makers and this can be because they are usually very busy people. You have to also remember that they often perform multiple jobs to do what they do amongst other things like real life. So it's a great pleasure to be able to talk to Tom Brennan who is one of the founding members of the Wardrobe Ensemble.
Tom talks to us about how the ensemble works together. If it's easier to deal with historic subjects, where the heat is and how that can tell you that you are onto something. We can't thank Tom enough for giving us some of his time and look forward to seeing more content produced by the ensemble.

Elliot is an artist, illustrator and small business owner. We found Elliot's work at a gothic art market and bought some really nice stickers from him. We talk about how the COVID lockdown actually pushed him to start the business and his first couple of experiences with markets.
We covered a lot of ground with Elliot and then create a gothic children's program!

Jason Cordova is a publisher, writer, podcaster and TTRPG creator and joined us for a chat from Texas via the power of the Internet. Jason spoke to us all about The Gauntlet, a community that celebrates tabletop roleplaying games and creating the very successful Kickstarter for Brindlewood Bay.

For the first time in about 2 years we are able to have a face to face chat. Neil Hampton (aka 14Eight) is a Bristol based creative who is fairly new to the scene of being in markets. In his words Neil makes "gothic home decor and jacket junk" which if you are into that kind of scene you will know what those things are and probably will take a look.

I was honoured to be asked by Andy & Lyndon to come back on the show I had to say yes. Since we have met them both before the chat is a little different but we try to focus on the changes that life can bring to both throw curveballs at your creativity or aid it. We also create miniature worlds created in science flasks!

Geoff got in touch with us via Twitter asking us if we wanted to have a chat about a comic he was working on. We said yes, and so here it is instead of the episode we had previewed on our Patreon which we had some audio issues.
We had a really interesting chat with Geoff about his past work and more current work with EroTech. We dived into how design plays such a large element in creating comic books, how NSFW comic does not have to be ALL smut, then created a dark gothic submarine cop series.

We had a lovely chat with the very talented Grimly Fiendish Crafts who creates very cute and spooky things out of felt, fabric and that sort of thing. The really fun part about their work is that a lot of them have something unique because they are all hand-made.
We talked about not being good at "traditional art", being a kinesthetic learner, the things they have on in the background while they work, creating your own physical market and we had a rant about Etsy fees. Grimly also joined in our creative part and did a drawing with us.

We met Aru about 4 years ago at I think the same convention we met Sarah Millman because they were tabling with CB. It's just taken a while for us to organise a proper chat with them but we hope you agree that it was well worth the wait.

Rhianna Pratchett is not a journalist despite what Wikipedia says although she certainly used to be. She has however written for many computer games including TombRaider, Overlord, Mirrors Edge and Heavenly sword to name a few. She has also written for DC, Marvel and Dark Horse and so much more. We are so thankful to be able to grab some of her time to chat through her history of creativity, her creative environment and the tricks she uses to persuade her own brain into working and so much more.

Gem Sheldrake, is an artist, comic creator, graphic designer for 2000AD and small press enthusiast. We accidentally hit on Gem's love for Arthur Morgan and traversed the usefulness of gaming to give your brain a break or to inspire you. We also talk about depression, how it's hard only having a small space to differentiate the difference between "work" and "home" and Gem's recent project with old Uni buddy and previous guest Phasechan.
During our creative section, we create a cyberpunk styled world with our main protagonist filtering through the muck with their extra arms in order to find some space change in the form of some luminous crab. Oh... and there is a monkey! We can't thank Gem enough for her time and involvement with the show.

Our first episode of 2022 is with multi-talented creator Zoe Burgess Foreman. Zoe is a researcher, horror enthusiast, author, artist, podcaster and on top of all of that is a teaching assistant for a special needs school.
We talk to them about how they find time to go to the toilet, ADHD, what Cthulhu would be like if he was a hot boi, the struggles that exist around adult manga in acquiring it, publishing it and people judging you for it.
We go off on many a tangent and eventually get round to creating two rival training gyms between aliens and cowboys with some buff cacti drawings from us.

This is our final chat of the year and we end the year with multi-talented creator Chris Bissette.
In their own words, Chris is a TTRPG designer, writer, vocalist and musician. In 2021 Chris decided that they would go "full-time" into their creative endeavours and things seem to be going okay so far. We spoke to them about the benefits of using a physical device to add tension to RPG's, their music and how there is a huge difference between enjoying writing and enjoying the act of having written something.
All of that was before we created a new made for TikTok show featuring influencer "Kid-nap" whose USP is voluntarily being kidnapped by Pirates in order to make awesome content. Confused? You should be.

Kat's illustration work includes a range of cards, invites and even bespoke illustrations too. Let's not forget that the Dinos and Dice Rolls Comic Kickstarter surpassed 300% of its funding which has to be declared a success. There is so much more to her work drawing cute dinosaurs going on adventures though.
It was lovely to chat with Kat and then catch her in real life when we met her at Thought Bubble. We hope that she had an excellent convention, we really enjoyed creating a space theatre with her and we can highly recommend checking out her work.

We had the pleasure and of a chat with Jordan Thomas who is a comic book writer that has recently released The Complete Frank At Home on the Farm book.
We chat to Jordan about the awesome Quarantine comic that he did at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, working with Clark Bint, how a film background helps him visualise a page and lots of other stuff. For our creative section, Chris shares his dislike of Leonardo Di Caprio and draws a weird eyeball testicle cowboy.

Bristol-based artist Katie Fishlock is celebrating the joy of sexual pleasure and relationship with the self. Both provocative and playful, she is also challenging the boundaries of portraying sexuality in this often-complex world. A former Graduate of Falmouth School of Art (2008), she has worked extensively as a make-up artist and stylist within the fashion industry, including with Boy George and Alexander McQueen.
When we got in touch with Katie we had no idea that she was going to turn the tables on us a bit in order for the interview to work for her current energy levels. Since we encourage things like spontaneity and experimenting with things we thought it would be really hypocritical to say no.
We chatted to Katie about her current work and draw what came into our minds or indeed into our fingers, we would love to see what you draw from this episode. We managed to grab some time with Mike Garley, a very busy writer and lecturer. Mike has a huge back catalogue of work and has recently (at time of writing) completed the Kickstarter campaign for the Samurai Slasher Omnibus.

Let us introduce the incredible artwork of Morrighan Corbel. We found her through Twitter somehow and we are incredibly glad we did. We think her artwork really portrays that feeling of aloneness, isolation and somewhat frustration. She also does pretty incredible pet portraits..
We loved chatting with Morrighan. It was really interesting for us to find out that as she has ADHD she tends to bill in terms of day rather than hours. We cannot thank her enough for the time she gave us and for the honesty she bought to the conversation.

PhaseChan is another of those artists we found at True Believers (2020) and when we saw the Kraken T-Shirt she had (but sadly sold out of our size) we knew we had to talk to her at some point and here is that chat.

In this episode we chat to comic maker, storyteller and Design Director at Papertank Chris Baldie. Back in November 2020 Chris released a Kickstarter to fund his comic "We Said Goodbye to Gravity" and it was more successful than he imagined.

We kick off May with another fantastic artist, illustrator and award winning comic maker Shazleen Khan.
We took a bit of a whirlwind tour through their history in the comic industry and how they get actual pleasure from the physical act of drawing. Shazleen has been working on their web comic BUUZA!! since 2019 and is enjoying using actual time as an element and making the reader commit in the long haul.
For our creative section we come up with a rhythm based game loosely connected to Pa Rapper the Rapper where the stars of the game are guiding a giant cosmic friendly bee to a safer place.

We met Gustaffo Vargas in 2019 at Thought Bubble and he is is an amazing comic book creator who has been incredibly busy in 2020.
Not only did Gustaffo work on the really interesting Quarantine Comic by Jordan Thomas, he also worked on Skrawl: Comix Magazine and drew, funded, released his own work Puno. We chat to Gustaffo about his really busy year, his work, his incredible use of colour, inspirations and so much more.

We got to chat with another creative across the pond in the form of Cooper Shaw. Cooper is an actor, director and teacher at the well known Second City training school. Chris got to know her a bit while he was taking the Dialects and Character Voices course that was run by Cooper over Zoom
It was lovely to dip into Cooper' history and work and how encouraging she is when learning to use your voice as an instrument. She has an infectious teaching method which is fun and encouraging so if you are interested in learning more about accents and dialects we would recommend you take a look at the course.

Here we are with our second producer of the occult and spooky material. Here is a chat with T. W. Burgess, a writer and purveyor of horror, especially ghost stories. We had a bit of audio difficulty with this and we hope it does not ruin your listening enjoyment.

For our second episode for February we had a remote chat with Improvisor, Radio producer and Podcaster Lloydie James Lloyd. Chris has been delving into what Lloydie has been up to with his Improv Chronicle Podcast, not something everyone might enjoy but if you are interested in Improv then we would certainly recommend it for a very consumable deep dive into some very interesting topics.
Lloydie was slightly reserved about the drawing section of our show but I do feel that he enjoyed creating a planet that was being run by two mobsters who have a certain penchant for musicals. For February we bring you the first of two scheduled episodes. We managed to grab some time with the owner of Buy Small Press an Indie marketplace, Aaron Rackley.
We can't thank Aaron enough for his time. He spoke to us about his day job as a Scrum Master and being a sometime developer. The publishing house that he setup to try and provide books for all ages, the charity he runs, the typography he did for Art Nine Two on GGA and more about how Buy Small Press came about. Aaron spoke openly about mental health without us asking him and we really appreciate his openness about that. We dig a bit more into his plans for the Indie Marketplace and then get him creating with us.

As promised we set up and had a great chat with Andy Perry the writer of the Reanimator Incorporated Graphic Novel. Having already spoken to the artist Lyndon White.
We dive into his writing process a fair bit and how he wanted the whole process to be collaborative with Lyndon. He does mention just how valuable the editing process was and how it reformed the story. We talk a little about a writing retreat that he went on with Arvon and as a writer just how much that improved his ways to give and receive feedback.
We loved chatting with Andy and thank him for being patient with our technical difficulties, turns out it all worked out. You can grab a copy of the graphic novel via Backerkit. We are eagerly awaiting the release of Volume 2.

Fantastic independent artists and comic book creators Damian and Helena make up Art Nine Two and for us, it was a huge amount of fun to sit and chat with them.
Damian's recent comic GGA (Galaxy Grappling Alliance) is a huge homage to the early days of the WWE bit with the matches having a deeper meaning. He has a passion for wrestling and movies and he even runs his own podcast called Omen to That. His talents don't stop there, he does amazing portraits of all sorts of people including Dr Who.
Helena is also an amazing portrait artist but has also an amazing talent for pet portraits. Over the lockdown, she has put a lot of time and energy into the Patreon to supply some really good art tutorial videos. These are really affordable for people who want to see how she puts her work together and even shows you the mistakes.

At time of writing, Joe and his wife are just about to have a baby so we managed to get a chat with him before that happened. It's also a bit of luck because we were only talking about Joe in the last episode.
We met Joe at Thought Bubble 2019 and Chris loved his watercolour style comic The Fox, The Wolf and The Woodsman but we didn't get much of a chance to chat to him. So it was interesting to dig into Joe's history and learn how he grew into web design. Making MySpace (remember that?) pages for some UK based celebrities to name a few things that he has turned his hand to. He still takes on design projects both for web and physical if he has the time, space and clients but would much rather spend a lot more time working on comics.

Welcome back for a rather chilled episode with the wonderful Graham Johnson. Graham is a producer, improviser and illustrator to name a few things. We chat to Graham about his early influences like the webcomics Questionable Content and Dresden Codac. It's really interesting to hear Graham talk about how these "Slice of Life" style comics appealed to him more than the more superhero/fantasy style.
We dive into being able to work with the fantastic Kid Carpet and his current projects which include drawing an entire tarot deck of Cute Squishy Boys, being the live illustrator for Tales of Adventure an Improv live play RPG that happens over on Twitch and is uploaded to YouTube. All that and some tangentst skip through Musical Theatre, the works of Nicholas Cage and a Lloyds Bank commercial?

We arrange a chat with creative problem solver Mat Roff. Sadly, we had a little issue with our audio on this episode but Mat's audio is great and after all, it is all about our guest and not us.
Mat helped us in a bit of a deep dive into why fan art can be so important in any artist journey. He told us how everything for him is classed as some sort of collaboration and how that keeps his work fun and interesting for him and his clients. His openness is something we applaud, it's not always about the final product, sometimes the journey is much more important.

Professor Lucy Rogers (PhD) is an inventor with a sense of fun. She is a Royal Academy of Engineers visiting Professor of Engineering: Creativity and Communication at Brunel University, London, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and she is adept at bringing ideas to life, from robot dinosaurs to mini-mannequins and even a "fartometer" for IBM! Chris had the pleasure of meeting Lucy at an improve intensive weekend with The Maydays and just knew we had to get her on the podcast.
Lucy has turned her hand to a plethora of things in her personal and professional life and virtually all of them have some form of creativity in them. It was really interesting to talk to her about her experience at the intensive weekend and the more recent release of Season 3 of The Design Spark podcast that she does with Bec Hill and Harriet Briane. We touch on the closure of the Guild of Makers, what the community does to have such a presence on Twitter, what environment she needs to help learn, failing in public and much much more.

We sat down with Director and all-round awesome human being Melanie Light way back in February before the lockdown was put in place and now we finally bring it to you.
Melanie not only writes and directs her own films but she is also a huge part of the Women In Horror month putting on amazing horror showcases. If that was not enough and is a huge advocate and voice for female representation in the film industry, especially in the horror scene.
Her short film The Herd won several awards including Best Horror Short at the London Independent Film Festival (UK) but don't judge Mel by the hard-hitting nature of the film. We talk a lot about her history, work, and the challenges that face not just her as a director but all women in the film industry. We do of course get Mel drawing with us and I love what we come up with.

This month we bring you a chat with comic book author and fellow podcaster Samuel George London.
We met Sam at True Believers (2020) and invested in his Milford Green comic books. It's amazing that Sam had never even written a major fictional story until he wrote Milford Green. He did so with the help of a structure laid out by Dan Harmon called the Story Circle and drawn by ace Finnish artist Mikael Hankonen. Sam talks about his experience with Kickstarter, how he found Mikael, delivering the final part of Milford Green, his love of a Museum in Baisingstoke and his upcoming projects which we are looking forward to.
On top of that, we make up a wonderful story that we are sure Marvel will be all over if they have any sense.

Another month is upon us and we are still in lockdown, we hope you are all well.
This episode was recorded at the beginning of March. Elliot and Kay collectively known as Arthole joined us after a full day at the Bristol art fair Shake. We fed them and plied them with tea to find out more about their own art fair, style, interests, influences and whatnot.
Of course, we also made them roll some dice and invent something on the spot and they did not let us down. How Kay managed to draw a whole page of a comic in such a short space of time is beyond us.

Welcome to our April episode where most of the world seems to be in some sort of lockdown (including the UK). We hope that you are well and employing some sort of social distancing.
We had this interview with Matt Emeny already recorded and obviously, we want to bring it to you so that you can check out his work. Matt makes his own theatre productions, acts and would love to direct his own movies. Chris has been working with Matt for the past few months as part of the theatre training that Matt provides with The Natural Theatre Company on some devised theatre. Matt's work in ranges from fun children's theatre the Father Christmas Workshop (2019) to the more Back Page that explores human trafficking in the West Country.
Matt talks about the challenges and stereotypes that are associated with Dyslexia. He has certainly found ways to dispel them and make his condition work for him to be a more natural performer.

We took a trip in early Feb to Cheltenham to check out True Believers Comic Festival. There we caught up with a multi-talented creative CB. We first bumped into CB at Cardiff comic con and we were compelled to have them on the Podcast as soon as we could. It took a while to set up but we got there in the end.
CB has produced two awesome comics; ThirteeN, the adult erotic demon zine about a former witch who is thrown into a life of servitude in the fiery pits of the underworld and Avery Chase a Sci-fi action-adventure extravaganza. CB also draws awesome illustrations some of which are more sensual than others. We hope that you take some time to check out their work and spread the word.

Welcome to part one our bumper 14th episode for November with Sarah Millman.
Sarah is a writer and artist that we found at Cardiff MCM. It was because her comic involved tea which Chris drinks a lot of and because our initial chat with her just felt so natural we really wanted to get her in for a chat and we are so glad she said yes. We had to split this into two parts because there was just so much that we covered. In this part, we dig a bit into Sarah's history and how she feels about people believing in her work. Sarah is also a DM for a D&D group that she runs over Skype and I can only imagine how much fun it is to be in one of her sessions. It's our thirteenth episode and in October... oooh, spooky. We are honoured to have the wonderful improviser and sketch comedy performer/writer Ros Beeson join us. This is part two of our two-part chat with artist Harry Jones. Here is where we roll the dice and make something up. See what we make out of the Dinosaur & Robot genres. We dig a bit into why Harry finds taking photos is incredibly helpful for him to use as reference material. Chris struggles trying to draw a tar pit and gives some dinosaurs some weird legs and Nathan shows us how robot aliens actually kidnapped all the T-rex's.
A huge thank you to Harry who was an awesome guest, we wish him well for all of his future projects and shall aim to keep an eye on what he produces.

We have the pleasure of chatting with Howard, Joe and Ferg who collectively call themselves Thunderchair for Episode 9. We begin by chatting about their new comic book launch event for Hyper Galactic Rockstar Champion: Royal Rumble. They have an interesting history of really long title names for their comic books. We talk about how they all met, what their influences are and there is a lot of silliness that happens. All of that is before we roll the cubes and somehow create a 70's style cop play starring a monster who is experiencing some sort of time shift.

Rhiannon Kagoe joins us for episode 8 to talk about her comic books. She intends to try and release at least one comic a year. She talks about how drawing is some form of self-help therapy for her and how she finds it easier to come up with ideas when she is sad rather than happy. We also touch upon the tricky fact that people are currently choosing not to vaccinate their children. Consider this a warning that if you do find talks about this subject tricky then you might want to skip that bit.

Our second episode for May and we have the pleasure of chatting to Stephen Hayles who is one of the directors of Upfest the biggest urban paint festival in Europe. We have split this episode into two parts because it was a long a chat and wanted to bring you as much content as we possibly could.

For the next few episodes we are releasing twice a month! In this episode we chat with Jess Tkls who is the lady behind CityAnimalz. Jess creates these amazing stylized creatures and sells her work on a stall near St Nicks Market in Bristol but you can buy them online. In our chat we find out that she is creating a whole world for them to frolic in. We really enjoyed meeting Jess and can't thank her enough for her time and more importantly we love her Steampunk fish that she drew with us. In our fourth episode we talk to amazing illustrator and street artist Sam Walsh aka Kid Crayon. In which, he talks about the awesome time that he had in Mexico at the Akumal Arts Festival and other festivals like Ibug in Germany.
