So, you're feeling like an impostor, are you? Well, I don't think impostor syndrome is something you need to overcome, as long as you learn to manage it.
With some homely, relatable stories, I'll help you with some practical steps on how to stop the self sabotage.
If you're finding yourself struggling with procrastination, step back and ask yourself one question:
What problem, is it, that you are solving?
So, too, if you're looking to build something for someone else, start with their frustration, rather than talking about your solution.

If you're finding procrastination is holding you back, think of setting small goals along the way.A most effective way to do this is to build feedback loops into your processes."Feedback" feels like a negative term, but the feedback may be positive. And even if it is negative, it can give you some clear idea of when you're on the wrong track.

It can be so discouraging when you start a new project and have no traction.
If you're building an audience, for example, you have exactly zero followers. It's tough.
Here are some ways to get past the starting mark:
You bring a lot of experiences to the table, so "zero" is not really zero.

You know what it's like to put off a job that should take you just 20 minutes. 20 minutes turns into two hours.
Two hours becomes two weeks.
A few weeks more, and you still haven't got back to it.
But what if your procrastination could turn your two hour job into 20 minutes?
What if you were to spend two hours working deeply on this "little" job, and then built a system to make it a smooth ride every time you have to do the same job again?

The challenge is that you need to create something that matters to people, and that's hard to do unless you're actually in touch with people who care about what you create.
But you also can be deceived by friends who encourage you, and have no real interest in what you make or do.
That's where strangers come in.

When you have a series of repeatable tasks to do, you can buy yourself back a lot of time.
Supposing you need to process something for a group of customers, and each customer has 5 steps involved.
One way to shorten the time taken is to batch up the steps that you have to run for each customer. Do step 1 for all the customers first.
Other options are discussed in the podcast episode.

If you're frustrated with yourself and feeling stuck, there's a simple way to get yourself out of that.
It's called building a process, but you need to be careful about what kind of process or system you want to build.
First, you need to make it small.
Second, you should start with something that is totally in your control, and not relying on someone else.
I find it helpful to start with the pain or problem that you have, rather than to start with a goal or ideal outcome. I explain why in this episode.

Do you every find yourself saying: "I didn't have time", or "I'll do that later"?
Are you postponing important activities until you have some spare time?
Well, there's no such thing as spare time.
That doesn't mean you need to be super productive. But any time you spend - even leisure time - can be spent with a purpose, rather than burning up (wasting) time because you had nothing better to do.

When you put your keys in the place where you can find them tomorrow, you're investing in your future self. When you brush your teeth, you're planning to live another day. In fact, most of our actions are about the future, and making us better prepared for it. In the same way, if you stay up too late tonight for no good reason, you're stealing from your future self; you're going to be too tired tomorrow. This episode shows how you can give a gift to your future self with your actions today.

With the million ideas, tasks and reminders that are going around your head, how do you make them less of drain? Simple! You turn them into habits. If you're spending a lot of mental energy on tasks that ought to be low concentration, it will drain that energy that you should be using for the more intensive thinking time. By adopting small habits, you get to relax while you're doing them, so that you can give your attention to more important ideas.

120 hours of supervised driving before they can do the test to get their license. 💯 +20
As I’m teaching them how to drive, they’re teaching me how to teach. 👨🏫
Lots of storytelling, that has nothing to do with driving. 👨🏼👧🚙
They learn a lot about their dad, the love and sacrifices their mother has done for them.
They learn a lot about business.
They learn a lot about habits that may have nothing to do with driving.
They learn to drive in a way that will stay with them for life.
And I learn to correct them in a way that builds them up. I can’t crush them.
And I can’t rush them.
They need to learn step by step, with gentleness, kindness and learning lots of processes and habits as they do.
One day, they’re going to have to drive without me beside them.
Drive cars…and drive their way in life.
And if all goes well, they live happily ever after.

When you ignore advice which you think is perfectly reasonable, it's probably impostor syndrome. Here are two very unorthodox approaches to managing that inner impostor. One way is to look beyond the presenting symptom, and find out what that inner resistance really is. This requires you to look beyond the obvious reasonable next step that you should take, and instead to ask yourself what's holding you back. Approach #2 is very different. It's about recognising that you are not your audience, and your own judgment about how good (or how bad) you are isn't all that important.

Does your day feel like it's been hijacked? Are you fighting interruptions, distractions, procrastination? In this episode, I've got a very different take on how to approach productivity. I don't speak about time blocking, or working longer hours. In fact, being productive is less about getting things done and more about clearing your head. Decluttering your head is a good way to manage that feeling that your day has been wasted and unproductive.

Does procrastination hold you back from doing things you know you have to do? Here’s an approach which might help you break through that.
Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/impostor-syndrome-aus/message
So many ideas come at us. Suggestions, tasks, requests. They all need time, AND the skills required to execute them. And in most cases, they also need tools. How can you be more productive? This isn't about tools or systems or hustling your way to being productive. It's not even about prioritising things. My approach includes a bit of those things, but really, it's about focusing on outcomes, and being self-aware when you find yourself self sabotaging. The emotional energy factor is huge. Without that internal driver, you can drift, and you're not here on this planet to be a drifter, are you? Think of those ideas/suggestions/tasks as ingredients for your restaurant kitchen. You're the chef, and you don't need so many new ideas or tasks or even skills. You just need enough of them (time, skills, tools) to make up your next new creation.

If you design websites for barbers, what do the barbers want? A pretty website? A shop full of bald men who don't need a haircut? No. The aim of the website may be to get the right kind of traffic to their shop. After a few weeks without publishing a podcast, I have a decent excuse. No, it's not COVID-19. It's YouTube. I got distracted by achieving my 15 minutes of fame on my YouTube channel. I had a video get 3000 views, and then another one which got 150,000 views. This forced me to take YouTube more seriously, and to revisit my channel. I found that my topics were broadly under four categories:
technical how-to videos pricing, marketing and business model productivity mindset and motivation
What I discovered was that all of these ended up falling under the broad category of confidence. That's a theme that I'm developing more, particularly around where people lose energy or fall short of courage. Listen to the episode and if you want to, have a look at my YouTube channel.

Nine months ago, I recorded a short video for my YouTube channel. It had nearly zero views. The same video - on How to create a Zoom meeting using Google calendar, has been viewed 3,150 times. My YouTube channel is currently getting 3000 views a day. I say this, not to boast, but to show that sometimes you have to plant a seed and have no idea if it will bear fruit, or when that might happen. The world has now had its rugged pulled out from under it, and we have no option but to adjust our footing. That may mean taking a jump in a direction that we never thought we would. It could mean revamping your business model, or delivering in a way that you never would have done before. What are you doing now that you thought you'd never be able to do?

My 9-year-old daughter and I had to clean up the rumpus room (the children's recreation room). Rather than doing it myself, or nagging my daughter, or leaving it undone, I found a better way of doing it by breaking it down into tiny steps. I think this is a valuable approach, especially for us now as a society, because we're seeing the importance of daily habits. Another teachable moment I had was with another daughter - she's 12. She transplanted a lime tree on the weekend. I thought of this as a metaphor for what's happening to us. Transplanting can put a lot of stress on a tree. A bit like what's just happened to us all. We hope the tree will do well, but most of the improvement will be barely noticeable. In fact, most of the work is going to happen under the ground. Just like us. Pulling a single leaf off the tree won't make much difference. A bit like a little habit that we miss for a day. Or a sharp word that gets said. Each time it happens, it's pulling off just one leaf. No big deal, until so many leaves get pulled off that the tree starts to fight just to survive. So, too, we don't see the improvements of tiny, daily improvements. Little things. 😀 a smile. ✅ a refusal to stress about something we can't control. 📆 an appointment kept, even with ourselves. ⏳ a 15-minute "no-procrastination" date with yourself.
Step by step. Under the ground. Miss a day? That's just one leaf. It doesn't kill the whole tree. Limes are on the way.

Are you finding something hard? Overwhelming? Drains you of energy? If it's something you have to do regularly, and you have no one else that will do it for you, here's my advice: start sloppily. You see, if you do this task, even though you do it poorly, you'll be glad you did it. It will be out of the way. And then you can document how you do it. In other words, build a process. From there, you can do it again, but this time, time how long it takes. You might be pleasantly surprised. And then you can do it again, tweaking your process. I did exactly this with a couple of jobs which I knew I had to do, but which I found a little overwhelming. Not only did I get the tasks done quickly, but in one case I actually grew to enjoy the task!

Do you have clients who don't value you? Finding clients who do value you, clients who energise you, means that you can keep them longer term. You're happy to hold onto them. And you can build your business on them. Your clients are not your enemy. You shouldn't be in conflict with them. Once you see that you and your clients are working together to build a better tomorrow for them, it can touch every part of your business:
pricing, because you're going to aim to keep clients long term marketing, because you're naturally going to attract clients who share in your vision sales, delivery, even how they pay you, because you will be working with people who value you.

Action: book an appointment with yourself now. (I do mine at 9 am on Fridays).
What did I get done this week? What went according to plan? What could I have done better? What lessons have I learned from that? How has this last week helped me build a legacy that others will appreciate? What do I think the long-term effect of this week is? How do I feel about this week? Am I happy? A coach of mine shared with me a simple process for working out exactly where to focus your time. Here's how it works:
You set your big goal, for say, 90 days from now Make sure that goal is relatable to you, ideally you'd be emotionally invested in it. (Not just a financial goal). Then you play: "If only ... " And work backwards from the end goal.
For instance Big goal: a stable coaching business. If I can only get a waitlist of clients, then I can have a stable coaching business. If I can only get a full calendar, then I can have a waitlist of clients. If I can only make enough sales, then I'll have a full calendar. If I can only get on enough calls with the right kind of leads, then I'll make enough sales. If I can only qualify the leads well, then I can get on enough calls with the right kind of leads. If only I can find a good way to nurture leads, then I'll qualify the leads well. If only I can market effectively, then I can find a good way to nurture leads. If only I choose a specific market niche, then I can market effectively.

If you need more clients, why worry about your pricing? At this stage, you might not have a clue what to charge, and - let's face it - any money coming in the door is good, right? Actually, when you are clear about how your price relates to the transformation you're bringing your clients, a lot of things change:
you are more confident about which clients to talk to (and which ones to turn away) you sell at higher prices you don't discount your services
In short, when you price confidently, you take control of your pricing, rather than have it be dictated by market rates, what your peers are charging, or something else that is out of your control.

Are you overdelivering your service and undercharging for it? Are you like the cakemaker who is making a very bespoke birthday cake but only charging as if it were just another cupcake? There are three business models you could use here:
high-touch services, at high prices ("the birthday cake") low-touch services, at low prices ("the cupcake") a combination of the two.
If you're doing the combination, it pays to streamline your processes, so that you don't get sidetracked doing the low-value "busy" work.

You may be doing sacrifices now, in the hope of some payoff in the long term. What if your payoff were to happen now? What if you were to get the emotional and financial payoff for your business now, rather than project it some time into the future?
Are you working long hours? Do you have too many clients? (Yes, it really can happen.)
Is it time for you to change how you and your business work together? Would you like my personal coaching to help you manage impostor syndrome, and price confidently? Book a call with me to find out about my services.

When you don’t charge enough for your services, your clients probably won’t correct you. It’s not their job. It’s not their focus. In this episode, I speak about various ways of showing the client new data points, so that they see the value and pay accordingly.

When you begin consulting, you may focus on deliverables. Doing the busy work. Hands-on work.
Then you can become more systematic about it. More process-driven. You can use this process for your own business and even sell the blueprint, the methodology to others. Think of a chef who writes a cookbook or creates a video series on how to cook.
The third, and highest, level of engagement, is strategy. This is where you get people to step back and ask: "why are we doing this? What direction are we headed?"
You can treat these three as three separate offerings, each valuable in itself, and priced accordingly.

If you're overwhelmed, bored, short of energy, distracted or procrastinating, you need a microhabit.
What's that?
It's a tiny habit, a process that you know how to use consistently, so that at those times where you feel overwhelmed or distracted or bored, you don't have to think about it.
How do you develop a microhabit?
You now have not just a microhabit for the new habit you want to build. You also have a microhabit of how to build a process.

The surgeon with arthritis
Think of a surgeon - a highly experienced one - who now has arthritis. This surgeon can no longer hold a scalpel, but still has incredible knowledge and experience.
Is that still of value?
Of course it is!
So, too, if you were to charge for your services without actually delivering anything, that could be of immense value. It's applying your mind, your expertise, to a particular problem. You'd be charging for your diagnosis, and for the prescription, but not for implementing anything.

"Your daughter looks like you." "Oh really? I can't see it."
How is it that everyone else can see some similarities between a mother and her daughter, except the mother?
It's much the same thing with our skills. Because you're so good at what you do, because you're so experienced at your craft, you may not realise just how daunting and difficult it appears to others.
You're too close to it
You fail to see the real value you bring.
So, how do you get around that? By asking someone. An outsider. A client. A stranger.
"What difference did I make?"
"What did you expect to get from working with me?"
"What did you actually get?"
The answers may surprise and delight you.

Do you want to be successful? Then prepare to fail. You may think of your ideas, your projects, like they're airplanes. If a single one fails, it's a crash, a disaster. Instead of thinking like that, imagine if your ideas were doves in a cage. You let them out, and some of them will fly. But you will never know which ones will fly until you let them out of the cage. In this episode, I share some ways where you can prepare yourself for failure. If you're making sales but not making sufficient money, get my 10 tips on how to fix it. When you think of your competition, you may be thinking of your direct competitors.
But your competition may be very different. It could be an online course, or a Do-It-Yourself attitude.
The word competition comes from the Latin words: "cum-" (together) and "petere" (to strive).
So your competition is striving together, with you, to achieve a good safe outcome.

Two families I know had their homes almost burnt down in the fires this last weekend here south of Sydney.
They showed tremendous resolve and were both willing to face the consequences should the fires have actually destroyed their homes. This resolve can apply to other challenges in business and in life, drawing on your existing skills and talents.

I was talking to a prospect about getting some coaching, and in the weeks we were talking, someone else approached her, offering to "10X" her business.
What did that even mean to her? The person making the offer may have assumed that "10X" to her meant exactly what "10X" meant to him.
I'd say that was a dangerous assumption.
After all, depending on what she understood about her own business and client base, and her market, she may have taken 10X to mean:
And if it is profit, what exactly does that mean?

It's the little, annoying things that eat away at you, all day long.
You can't completely silence that voice. But you can contain it.
Call it a little monster in your head, if you like. Well, the monster could bark at you, but at least he can be a monster on a chain. That way, you won't get bitten unless you choose to.
In episode 1 of The Impostor Syndrome Podcast, I share with you some simple strategies I use to help curb that impostor monster.
