Lesley Sleight didn’t pick up a bow until her sons needed an adult to walk the course with them. She only went along as their shoot guardian. Then her husband asked whether she wanted to do it properly — and if she did, she’d be spending the next four months standing two feet from a bag in a shed, shooting into it. No targets. No scores. Just technique. Her first ever competition was the national championships, where she finished 12th.What followed is one of the most under-told sporting stories on the Isle of Man: GB and England selection, European titles, a world championship, and a single extraordinary season in which she broke three world records and thirty-nine English ones. When she told a teammate her score at the Europeans in the Netherlands, he assumed she’d misspoken by a hundred points. In this episode Lesley talks through the sport from the ground up, the difference between field, target and 3D archery, why traditional-class archers shoot off the shelf with feather fletchings, what “gap shooting” actually means, and why her husband still hand-makes and weighs every one of her arrows. Then the conversation turns to the harder stuff: target panic and how it arrived only after she knew how good she was, the gamesmanship that goes on at international level, competing with no funding while teaching full time, and the quiet frustration of representing your island in a sport nobody writes about. It’s a conversation about technique, pressure, and what it costs to be world-class at something almost nobody is watching.

Sports psychologist Rich Sille delves into the ways psychology can optimise human performance and wellbeing, particularly in sports and business contexts. Sille defines psychology as a tool for enhancing both performance and mental health, focusing on how individuals can improve by analyzing their mental processes. He emphasizes the importance of self-awareness, suggesting that people should reflect on the historical, environmental, and personal influences shaping their behavior. By understanding these influences, individuals can identify areas for improvement, foster healthier relationships, and enhance their overall well-being. Sille also touches on concepts like nudge theory, which uses subtle cues to help people make better decisions, and discusses how preventative measures in mental health could significantly impact education and suicide prevention.Throughout the conversation, Sille highlights the parallels between performance in sports and business, explaining that the same psychological principles apply across various domains. Whether it's an athlete aiming for a personal best or a business leader delivering a crucial presentation, Sille stresses the role of mindset and self-talk in achieving peak performance. He encourages clients to challenge rigid beliefs that may create unnecessary pressure, replacing them with more adaptive and flexible thoughts. This approach, according to Sille, can lead to improved outcomes by reducing anxiety and fostering a healthier, more sustainable drive toward success.

Paul’s early childhood was all about sport, his parents were heavily involved in Manx sport and therefore a life within sport was always likely for Paul.

At the age of 15, Paul signed for Stockport County and was on path for a career in football. After two years progressing with Stockport, circumstances started to change which ultimately lead Paul down another career path.

Destructive habits started to bleed into Paul’s life and the following years were spent battling a football career that never was.  Paul worked through this and has left a number of legacy programmes, including at Premier League Norwich City.

Paul is now manager of the Island football team and working to develop Isle of Man sporting club.

Chris Mitchell fell in love with motorbikes early in his life. As soon as he could afford to buy a bike he purchased one.

At the age of 30 an accident changed the trajectory of his life. Losing the use of his left arm he battled back to riding motorbikes. But this time he took it a stage further and started racing short circuits. He then set himself a goal of competing at the world famous mountain course.

The ability, mindset, strength and sheer skill is to behold. Worth a listen to realise limitations are what you make of them.
