Hi! My name is George Tsantrizos. From 2007-2018, I spent the better part of my life working as a political advisor, often referred to as the backstage of politics. The endless hours of a non-existent schedule; the media, community and government relations; the time away from home; the multiple campaign trails; the hurrays and the boos; the compliments and criticisms; all that and much more were just part of the deal. Why do it you say? For the absolute privilege of working with individuals that ceaselessly demonstrated their profound and remarkable desire to contribute to society. Here's where I surprise you... Many of those individuals had absolutely nothing to do with the political class. They were community organizers and leaders, businessmen and businesswomen, influencers, volunteers, inspirational men and women. Here's the irony... We depended on them as much, if not more, as they depended on us. And the conversations! I think I'll miss those the most! My guest today is Julian Spencer-Churchill. He is quite frankly the reason I remained in the Political Science program at Concordia University. His Strategic Studies courses were absolutely mesmerizing and I couldn’t think of anyone better to explain what is happening on the ground in Ukraine. In addition to being an incredible University professor, Julian is an author, the Chairperson of the Canadian Center for Strategic Studies and has been a key advisor to the Canadian government and intelligence services on Pakistan. His principal research focus is on arms racing and its impact on war causation, the sharing of nuclear weapons, naval strategy, and military doctrine and planning. His field research has included work at the US Pentagon and State Department, Egypt, Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, and most frequently, Pakistan. I hope you enjoy this conversation!

En fait, il est parmi les premières personnes que j’ai rencontrées quand j’ai fait mon entrée dans le monde de la politique. Winston Chan est une des personnes les plus impliquées dans toutes les sphères de notre société, que ce soit socialement, en politique, en affaires, au niveau de la culture et des arts et biens d’autres. Il va sans dire que la pandémie qui afflige le monde entier n’est pas chose facile pour personne. Mais il y a des groupes dans notre société qui sont affectés beaucoup plus que d’autres. La communauté chinoise est un de ces groupes et dans cet épisode, nous discutons de ces actes de violence envers les chinois, ce qui est fait pour sensibiliser nos leaders, le futur des commerces chinois et plus précisément le Quartier chinois et bien plus! Adam is the guy behind almost every official picture of Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. He is an exceptionally talented photographer who, through his unique style, keeps setting the bar higher and sets the example among his peers. My guest this week is an old friend from college. Aram was that kid that everyone wanted to hang out with because of his loyalty, his kindness and his constant good humor. That’s not to say though that he didn’t get into his share of trouble, which also seemed to be quite constant! Somehow, we completely disconnected after college but I always wondered what he was up to and how his life progressed. Thankfully, with the help of social media I connected with him again sometime last year and was in awe when I noticed that he was involved with a chimpanzee sanctuary in Sierra Leone, Africa. At first, I found it funny and just couldn’t understand how he could have ended up there. But as I read more on the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, its creation, its mission and its crucial contribution, I was completely intrigued! On this episode Aram shares his journey on discovering his calling and we have, quite possibly, one of the most interesting conversations about how the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary has not only saved a species, but in doing so, is completely transforming Sierra Leone into a leader in ecotourism, social development, environmental education and, more importantly, wildlife conservation. My guest this week is someone I met very early on during my career in politics. Evangelos Ligeros is one of the most prominent personalities in Canadian Taekwondo. He is the face behind Chong Lee Taekwondo, an institution through which Taekwondo was first introduced to Canada and founded by his father-in-law, the late Grandmaster Chong Lee, nearly 60 years ago! Evangelos is a Grandmaster 7th dan, 8 time national champion, international, US Open and Panamerican medalist and among many other achievements, he is also a World Taekwondo and Korean Martial Arts Masters Hall Of Fame recipient. He has trained and coached many athletes in becoming medalists at senior, junior and military world championships. On this episode we look back at his incredible journey, his relationship with one of the greatest martial arts mentors and his passion for preserving the school’s mission and its rightful place in our society. I am so excited to finally have John Parisella on the podcast. When I started working in politics, in 2007, I was almost immediately immersed in a world where legends were real. John had already and rightfully earned that title. When we talk about “The Backstage” of politics, John Parisella is most definitely the very definition of that statement! His involvement with the Quebec Liberal Party started in the late 70s as he quickly climbed the ranks to become the Party’s Director General; he has served five Quebec Liberal Party leaders among which three became Premiers; he has played a crucial role in organizing general election campaigns as well as three referendums; he has represented Quebec as Delegate General in New York and Washington DC; he is often called upon for political commentary on various media outlets; he is an author but most of all, as he likes to say, he is passionate about teaching! On this episode, we walk through this very exciting and often challenging journey as he shares his encyclopedic knowledge of Quebec politics but also some of his personal stories and thoughts. Eva and I have known each other since high school and despite the fact that we haven’t seen or spoken to each other since, I’ve been following her journey as an entrepreneur while becoming one of the most sought-after makeup artists evolving in the very competitive pop culture scene in Quebec. This achievement has been anything but easy and on this episode she shares the challenges she faced and how she put aside a successful career to pursue her passion! It’s very difficult to forget the day a very talented young man met with my colleagues and I with a request to provide any and all help to win his nomination as a Liberal Party of Canada candidate for the 2015 general election for the riding of Ahuntsic, in Montreal. I remember how much Anthony Di Carlo impressed us and demonstrated to us his passion for politics and his exceptional knowledge of that area he wished to represent. Which is why we were so torn when we told him that we couldn’t help or get involved strictly because of how delicate, politically, it is to throw support behind an aspiring election candidate. Unfortunately, despite the incredible local support he had worked so hard to get, he stepped aside to allow for someone else to be nominated. However, that selfless action helped to open another door which propelled him to the successful career he now has. On this episode, we talk about all that political journey, his contribution as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, as well as the crucial work he now does at the Dallaire Institute. Mon invité cette semaine est Ali Nestor. Un individu quand même assez connu, surtout dans le quartier de Saint-Michel à Montréal. Pour plusieurs, Ali est le fondateur d’une école de boxe et d’arts martiaux à travers laquelle il a créé des programmes variés qui visent à encadrer des jeunes en difficulté et à les guider vers un chemin autre que celui pouvant les conduire vers le monde du crime. C’est justement ce Ali Nestor dont j’avais aussi entendu parler. Je ne savais pas que derrière cet homme, se cache une histoire incroyable d’adversité liée à la violence domestique, le racisme systémique, les crimes et la violence liés aux gangs de rue, les centres de détention et la désobéissance civile. Mais surtout, c’est une histoire de développement personnel et de réussite. Tout est exposé dans son nouveau livre Moi Ali Nestor, Petit Prince de la Rue. Sur cet épisode, nous parlons de ce passé sombre et tout ce qui lui a donné la force de trouver la lumière et de devenir l’homme inspirant qu’il est aujourd’hui! My guest this week is Kenneth George, one of the very first local leaders I met when I started to work as a political advisor back in 2007. Until recently, Kenneth was among the longest serving school commissioners in Montreal and definitely, in my opinion, the one most present and involved. He was a regular at our office and that’s because he always brought new and refreshing ideas on how to improve our local schools and, as such, the lives of the families living in our district. Needless to say, that most of his ideas came with a request of a rather large sum of government funding, but nothing made us happier to support his projects because they made sense and were necessary for the development and advancement not only of our schools but our community at large. On this episode we discuss his journey as an academic and what encouraged him to run for public office as a school commissioner. Also, we discuss the recent education reform of the Quebec government which brought forth the abolishment of school boards, the impact it already has and will continue to have on the students, their parents and the teaching personnel. Dimitris Ilias and Maria Diamantis are two exceptional opera singers that left behind their careers at some of the world’s most prestigious opera houses to focus on educating and promoting the values of this artform. Through their collaboration with over 25 schools across the Greater Montreal Area they continuously contribute not only to fueling the musical passion of hundreds of children, but offering them the accessibility to this industry’s multiple facets such as concerts, rehearsals, recordings and production. These children have taken part in high-end productions like children’s operas and musicals, multiple audio story books for children, concerts and collaborations with revered composers, singers, songwriters and symphony orchestras. His dedication to youth empowerment through sport is exemplary and his involvement in his community has led him not only to the very top of his organization, but also at a leadership position through which he administers the most important cultural and community center in Park-Extension, the William-Hingston Complex. My guest this week is an exceptional guy, a very good friend and a former colleague! Joshua Wolfe was the very first intern we ever had at our riding office. I remember his first day like it was yesterday: a shy young kid, freshly out of university, looking completely lost and scared and who seemed to hate having picked that particular day to start working with us. His first day at the office coincided with an important announcement and press conference we’d been preparing with a cabinet Minister. In retrospect, perhaps there wasn’t a better way to be thrown into this gig than to be shown exactly what this job is all about and what the expectations are! Josh proved not only to be incredibly intelligent and efficient, but he also quickly adapted and developed an impressive political acuity. Needless to say, we kept him onboard once his internship was over. He later went on to work in advocacy and build an impressive network of political staffers, cabinet senior advisors, Ministers and even the Premiers themselves! He now works in a field that he has always been passionate about: political engagement. He works with different professionals, community and social groups, schools and other leaders with one main purpose: getting our citizens, and primarily our youth, engaged in our society’s political, social and community affairs. This week’s conversation is one of the most interesting and informative ones I’ve recorded to date! I am very glad to introduce you to my good friend Bryan Solloway. Bryan was a young intern at our political office and I remember thinking at that time, even though he brought incredible enthusiasm to our workspace, that perhaps politics wasn’t for him. I think I was right. In fact, I’m glad I was right. Because he went on to discover his true calling and started working with young children with mental, behavioral and developmental difficulties. He later founded ABC Solutions and provides behavioral and educational solutions to families as well as education professionals. It is an incredible vocation that not only requires patience and compassion but through which he is able to positively impact the lives of so many children and their families! My guest this week is David Heurtel. David and I met in 2013 when he was running for a by-election for the provincial riding of Viau. He went on to win that campaign and get re-elected again during the 2014 general election in Quebec. During his time in government, he served as Minister for Sustainable Development, the Environment, and the Fight Against Climate Change, as well as Minister of Immigration, Diversity and Inclusion.

I have often said on this podcast how hard it is to work in politics. And for some reason, that I’ve never been able to fully understand, there seems to be an unfortunate impression about women in politics and how much harder it is for them!
I had the privilege, in 2007, to enter the world of politics under the first ever Québec government to introduce a gender-equal ministerial cabinet; I witnessed what I used to call “The Titans” manage some of the heaviest cabinet posts, such as Michelle Courchesne, Monique Jérôme-Forget, Nathalie Normandeau, Lise Thériault, Monique Gagnon-Tremblay, Line Beauchamp; I saw the first ever woman Premier elected to government, Pauline Marois, with some of her very own heavy-hitters, such as Louise Beaudoin, Véronique Hivon, Agnès Maltais, Marie Malavoy. And the list goes on and on…
I had the privilege, and still do, to know and work with unbelievable women that vowed to create more opportunity for women in politics and I supported them because I fundamentally believe that not only do they belong in politics, but they make a significant difference in public affairs.
My guest today is proof of that! Rosannie Filato is a young and ambitious municipal councilor elected in the district of Villeray. She was a newcomer in the 2017 municipal elections and has been given the responsibility of numerous files as member of the executive committee at the city of Montreal. I am grateful that she found some time to come on the podcast and chat about her journey so far in municipal politics!

My guest this week is Harout Chitilian. Harout and I met in 2009 when he entered politics as the new municipal councilor for Bordeaux-Cartierville, in Montreal. I almost immediately recognized how incredibly well-spoken and intelligent he was but more importantly his dedication to serving his citizens and the enormous respect he had for everyone around him. During the last municipal elections in 2017, he was unfortunate in seeking re-election, this time as Borough Mayor of Ahuntsic-Cartierville, but he was almost immediately recruited by the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec; a government institution initially created to manage Québec’s public pension programs that has now evolved into many subsidiaries making it a key investor in major markets and asset classes. Harout is the director of a new division that is undertaking one of the most anticipated projects in Québec - a high-speed electric railway - that will connect Montreal to its neighboring cities. My guest this week is an incredible visionary! Pierre Legault has spent his entire life helping society’s most marginalized. At a time when social economy and entrepreneurship were pretty much unknown to most people, he founded what is arguably one of the most important organizations in Québec - Moisson Montreal – which helps distribute over 90M$ worth of non-perishables and other food items to Montreal’s needy families every year! Having felt a sense of accomplishment, he resigned and went on to create yet another significant organization – Renaissance – which, not only has paved the way for social entrepreneurship in Québec, but more importantly, through its mission to provide affordable clothing and other essential items to Montreal families, it helps the unemployed get all the necessary resources to reintegrate the job market. Hi! My name is George Tsantrizos. From 2007-2018, I spent the better part of my life working as a political advisor, often referred to as the backstage of politics. The endless hours of a non-existent schedule; the media, community and government relations; the time away from home; the multiple campaign trails; the hurrays and the boos; the compliments and criticisms; all that and much more were just part of the deal. Why do it you say? For the absolute privilege of working with individuals that ceaselessly demonstrated their profound and remarkable desire to contribute to society. Here's where I surprise you... Many of those individuals had absolutely nothing to do with the political class. They were community organizers and leaders, businessmen and businesswomen, influencers, volunteers, inspirational men and women. Here's the irony... We depended on them as much, if not more, as they depended on us.
And the conversations! I think I'll miss those the most! So I figured after all these years, perhaps there's a way to keep those going and share them with you all.
