Can God be found in the algorithm? How far should our powers with A.I. extend, and how should the church respond? What does artificial intelligence mean for human connection and the way we love? These questions drive The New Garden, a podcast at the crossroads of theology and technology. Each week, co-hosts Tony Sundermeier, Senior Pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, and Brent Macon, Atlanta-based tech entrepreneur and thought leader, sit down with theologians, academics, and innovators to wrestle with the spiritual and ethical implications of A.I. In this first episode, we begin by setting the stage with the central issues and questions that The New Garden will unpack in future episodes. New episodes drop every Thursday on all major podcast platforms, with video versions available on YouTube and at firstpresatl.org. #TheNewGardenPodcast #FaithAndTech #AIandTheology #ArtificialIntelligence #TechAndFaith #ChurchAndAI #SpiritualityInTech #BigQuestions #HumanConnection #PodcastLaunch #FaithInTheDigitalAge #YouTubePodcast

In the final two sessions of Roadside Religion, we look at the phenomenon of Bible Theme Parks — that is, amusement parks, museums, and other Christian destination sites that are designed to illustrate biblical themes and ideas. What makes these places so attractive? What theologies do they aim to convey? And how might Christians today recover the idea of “pilgrimage” even if these Bible Theme Parks are not their cup of tea.

Sessions 5 and 6 explore the curious forms of church that can be found in contemporary American Christianity, including the increasingly popular Drive-Thru and Drive-In churches. How does the appearance of a church reflect underlying theologies about what it means to be the body of Christ? How does the rise of new technologies and media influence our understandings of liturgy, mission, and church leadership? And is there a place for more traditional, “big steeple” churches in the brave new world of contemporary ecclesiology?

This week, we’ll look at the Biblezine -- the text of the Bible (or parts of it) packaged in a format that looks a lot like People Magazine or US Weekly. What happens to the message of the Bible when it takes on this medium? What motivations – both theological and commercial – lie behind the Biblezine and the big business of Bible publishing? How do these types of “Bibles” influence popular understandings of Scripture and its interpretation?

The third lecture in this series (session 5-6) consider Commandments 3-5 – not taking the LORD's name in vain, keeping the Sabbath, and honoring parents. Taken together, these three commandments function as a type of bridge that links the worship-focused commandments (##1-2) w with the community-focused commandments (##-6-10). While the content of these commandments are familiar to many Christians, important questions remain about their on-going meaning and relevance for the church today.

Part 2 of 2
The second week of this class examines the first two commandments of the Decalogue. While these commandments are closely related, they address two distinct theological issues: the improper object of worship (no other gods) and the improper manner of worship (no idols). In each case, we consider the history and theology behind the commandment, including the way in which its meaning is interpreted by later biblical writers and Christian theologians.

Here we encounter the paradox that while the Ten Commandments are highly important and frequently discussed, its content is not widely known.

This week’s session focused on strategies of biblical interpretation, including how we can take the Bible “seriously” without reading it “literally.”

In our second session we looked more closely at the nature of biblical literature, including how the Bible is best seen not as a book, but rather as a library of diverse texts featuring different perspectives, genres, and purposes.

August 30 -- The Psalms is one of the most frequently cited books in the New Testament. Authors such as Paul find in the Psalter's prayers and praises a testimony to God’s on-going work in the world. This final study in our series looks at several examples of where the Psalms are cited and how they are understood in Paul’s letters.
From the Sunday School series "Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul."

August 23 -- The book of Exodus is filled with familiar stories — from the parting of the Red Sea to the wilderness wanderings, from the 10 Plagues to the 10 Commandments, from the controversy about the Golden Calf to the construction of the holy Tabernacle. Biblical authors often reflect on these stories in their writings, and the Apostle Paul is no exception. This study explores which Exodus traditions Paul draws upon and how he interprets them in light of the life and teachings of Christ.

This issue generated considerable controversy in the Galatian communities — and in many churches today. In this study we will explore three specific arguments Paul makes about whether or not the law functions as a source of status and identity, a source of righteousness, and a source of power and life.

August 9--The Ten Commandments are the most well known – if not the most important — set of commandments in all of the Old Testament. They are referenced and talked about not only in Scripture and Christian theology but also in many areas of popular American culture. Paul, too, is interested in the Ten Commandments, but not always in the ways we would expect. This study explores how Paul understands, and in some cases, re-interprets the Ten Commandments in his letters to the early Church.

August 2--Derived from a Greek word meaning "to interpret,” hermeneutics refers to the art of understanding a biblical text. Each of us has a unique hermeneutical perspective that is informed by our experiences, background, training, and social, cultural, and historical location. The same is true of the Apostle Paul. This two-part lesson attempts to shed light on the various factors and influences that shaped how and why Paul read the Old Testament the way he did.

July 19 -- If the Gentiles are to be included in the community of Christ, what then of Israel? What role do they play in God’s on-going work in the world? In Romans 9-11, Paul attempts to respond to these questions by once again turning to the pages of the OT. This lesson examines how Paul distinguishes between all Israel and the “true” Israel even in the stories of Genesis and the prophets.

July 12 -- Paul’s calling to preach Christ to the Gentiles (i.e., non-Jews) marked a radical shift in the early church — one that occasioned a good deal of controversy, especially among Christian Jews. In order to defend the validity of his mission as an “Apostle to the Gentiles” (Rom 11:13), Paul turns to the story of Abraham and Sarah in Genesis 12-17. In this lesson, we discuss how it is that Paul comes to see the Gentiles as the true and rightful descendants of these well-known figures from the Israelite Scriptures.

June 28 -- We tend to think about Paul as many things: Convert, preacher, missionary, theologian, and, perhaps most of all, writer. While Paul is all of these things, he also can be understood as an interpreter whose Scriptures consisted of what we now call the Old Testament. This lesson explores how and why Paul uses the OT so often in his letters to the earliest Christian churches.

July 5 -- Needless to say, the Apostle Paul did not possess a leather-bound, NRSV Study Bible with Jesus’ words highlighted in red. But what did Paul’s Bible look like? How was it like or not like our Old Testament today? This lesson takes a closer look at the content, format, name, and language of Paul’s Bible.
