In 1 Corinthians 9:19-27, Paul uses an athletic metaphor to inspire us to live a disciplined life; not to get God's attention, but so that we may not lose that which has apprehended us. God has given us a foretaste of an increase of His presence, therefore we want to live in such a way as to be marked by a great move of God.

Paul compares Christians to athletes that are called to run, and run in such a way as to get the prize. Now that the "debt of honor" has been paid, Gateway has found her legs again and it's time to run the race God has laid out for us. Let's not let anything entangle us and keep us from running and serving others.

Sermon Notes:

Run: To go quickly by moving the legs more rapidly than at a walk and in such a manner that for an instant in each step, all or both, feet are off the ground.

"You’ve all been to the stadium and seen the athletes race. Everyone runs; one wins. RUN TO WIN. All good athletes train hard. They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades. You’re after one that’s gold eternally.” - 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 (The Message)

"The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight, but has no vision.” - Helen Keller

"Since we are surrounded by so many examples of faith, we must get rid of everything that slows us down, especially sin that distracts us. We must run the race that lies ahead of us and never give up. 2 We must focus on Jesus, the source and goal of our faith.” - Hebrews 12:1-2

John 12:32 Psalm 127:1 Matthew 16:18 Ephesians 4:7-16

Our future is found in our beginning.

What stays in the house dies in the house.

John, one of Jesus' disciples, infamously asked Jesus to call down fire from heaven onto the people he didn't like. This man of racism and prejudice would later write passionately about loving God and loving others. Clearly his time with Jesus, a man of love, had a profound impaact on his life. John writes in 1 John 4:19 - "We love because He (God) loved us first." The power to love God comes from our decision to surrender to Jesus and walk in His ability to love others.

Jesus makes a staggering stament in Mark 12. When asked what was the greatest commandment of all, Jesus told His hearers that it was to love God with everything and to love our neighbor as ourselves. That little word "as" means "to the same degree or quality". Our ability to love others, i.e. to create a safe place and a safe home, is dependent upon how well we love ourselves. Loving ourselves is not self absorption, but a means to growing in our maturity in Christ so we can love others with the full, genuine love of God.
