The most merciful, fair, just, capitalistic, democratic darkness cannot govern children of light. There is a higher government for Christians and it's called the Kingdom of God. Government's two primary purposes are safety and empowerement. In Psalm 3, when David is confronted with his enemies, he experiences the environment of God's government and in doing so encounters the glory of God.
In a new series, SHIFT, Lance begins to talk about the significance of seeing God when we are surrounded by increasing pain, enemies, trauma, etc. In King David's 3rd song, Psalm 3, he uses a "Selah" to pause in his song. All of us need to have "Selah" moments when confronted by life so we can see and perceive as Christ does.
In John 11 Jesus is told that Lazarus is sick. He said the sickness will not end in death (v 4) and then John says that Jesus loves Mary, Martha and Lazarus. Love is at the heart of a revival; a moving of God's Spirit. But will this love encounter just be a "moment" like a vacation, and then back to the real world or will it be a string of moments connected together by understanding and stewardship that turns into a movement. The movement is motivated by love and it's focus is intimacy. We are called to be with Jesus, where He is in intimacy.

In 1 Corinthians 9:19-27, Paul uses an athletic metaphor to inspire us to live a disciplined life; not to get God's attention, but so that we may not lose that which has apprehended us. God has given us a foretaste of an increase of His presence, therefore we want to live in such a way as to be marked by a great move of God.
Paul compares Christians to athletes that are called to run, and run in such a way as to get the prize. Now that the "debt of honor" has been paid, Gateway has found her legs again and it's time to run the race God has laid out for us. Let's not let anything entangle us and keep us from running and serving others.

In the beginning it was God's design for us to be fruitful. Sure, God meant for us to have children, the fruit of the womb, but we learn from Jesus in John 15 that God desires the entirety of lives be fruitful. Christ in Us gives us the power to live lives that bless and inspire others.

John, one of Jesus' disciples, infamously asked Jesus to call down fire from heaven onto the people he didn't like. This man of racism and prejudice would later write passionately about loving God and loving others. Clearly his time with Jesus, a man of love, had a profound impaact on his life. John writes in 1 John 4:19 - "We love because He (God) loved us first." The power to love God comes from our decision to surrender to Jesus and walk in His ability to love others.
Jesus makes a staggering stament in Mark 12. When asked what was the greatest commandment of all, Jesus told His hearers that it was to love God with everything and to love our neighbor as ourselves. That little word "as" means "to the same degree or quality". Our ability to love others, i.e. to create a safe place and a safe home, is dependent upon how well we love ourselves. Loving ourselves is not self absorption, but a means to growing in our maturity in Christ so we can love others with the full, genuine love of God.
Christ's government has two main purposes. First, He provides protection and safety for people. Second, He trains, equips and empowers others to obey the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. Church leadership is an empowered and human form of Jesus' government and rule.

A strong prayer life is focused, personal and prioritized. No one stumbles into a brilliant prayer life. Jesus gave us a model for prayer, called the Lord's prayer, and it helps us stay focused, engaged in intimacy with God and praying the central themes of God's heart. There is no breakthrough without follow through. When you encounter God, He is inviting you into a "new normal", a new way of living. The practices that served you BEFORE the encounter with God do not always serve you well AFTER the encounter with God. In this message, pastor Lance shares a story of how his previous church, Church of the Hills, encountered God, transitioned into a new normal and thus sustained breakthrough because of effective follow through.
Consideration. Consecration. Contending. It's an exhilirating path to walk in fellowship with God. Hannah, the Old Testament prayer heroine and mother of the prophet Samuel took her barrenness to God and "contended" for an answer. What is surprisingly powerful is that God's answer to her prayer moved in concert with His heart for the nation of Israel.

We were all born with a desire to belong to a community. However, sin has caused a great divide between us, God and each other. Jesus was rejected so we could be accepted by God. Based upon that covenant, sin has been removed and we can live in authentic community.

God commanded the Israelites to set up a memorial in Joshua 4 after they crossed the Jordan River during flood stage. He did so, so that generations after them would see the memorial and remember the great and glorious work of God. Today we should set up memorials as well and remind ourselves of God's awesome faithfulness.
