The only path I know for figuring out a better way to spend your life is to sit and think. You simply have to carve out some time to think carefully about what you're doing, why you're doing it, and what you're really trying to achieve. Nobody stumbles into a well-lived life. Walking through some condos recently with a buyer got me thinking about creativity and all the ways in which you can explore the creative side of yourself at home.  Some think you have to be an artist to be creative, when in fact, that isn’t true at all.  Music and cooking, candle making, and gardening - all are ways to explore creativity at home.  This episode explores what it means to be creative within the walls of your home as well as using creative decision making to morph your home into a true expression of those living there.

Let’s dive into the spooky aspect of a home…the haunting of a home and the energy that can remain long after people have left. Let’s talk about the psychology of what makes a house feel haunted and I’ll share a real-life story and talk about the inhabitants with Dr. Kristy Sumner a paranormal investigator where she shares the details of an investigation in a house on a lake. Something is still there, moving around, lurking in the shadows, making curious unexplainable noises. Parental discretion is advised due to the graphic nature in which some people meet their demise and the discussion of the afterlife and darker things.

Let's discuss home organization; specifically the KonMari Method™. Most tidying methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, creating a scenario that may just never end because it’s not structured with a beginning and an end date.

People around the world have been drawn to the KonMari Method™ not only due to its effectiveness, but also because it places great importance on being mindful, introspective and forward-looking. I have invited Kristyn Ivey & Karin Socci, licensed KonMari consultants, and Co-hosts of the Spark Joy podcast dedicated to the transformative power of surrounding yourself with joy; and letting go of the all the rest.

On a visit to Worthy Brewing in Bend Oregon, we happened upon the most fabulous insect house that I have ever laid eyes upon. After some research, I discovered that it was created by Worthy Garden Club so, I had to look them up and learn more. As a result, in this episode, let’s discuss supporting our environment (1) from our backyard through insect hotels, (2) learning about non-profits that support our environment, (3) making a difference by doing what we enjoy most, and (4) buying holiday gifts from companies who are making business decisions that positively support our environment.

As we spend more time at home, efficient layouts and multi-purpose spaces are becoming more attractive to homeowners and buyers. Creating Flex Spaces helps ensure you have space for a wider range of things. It’s removing outdated labels like “formal dining room” and turning them into something less insistent. Quality use of space is square footage being used to it’s highest potential. Let’s talk about how to do that.

How many projects do you have lying around unfinished? As a realtor, I see first hand that garages can get lost in unfinished projects. Guest rooms can become junk rooms where unfinished projects get closed behind a door. I have read statistics that more than half of U.S. homeowners have at least one uncompleted home project. Unfinished projects can add stress to your daily life, especially when you see the unfinished pieces lying around every single day and rendering entire spaces and rooms unusable. How do we finish what we have already started and how can we prevent this cycle from happening again? Come geek out with me on Finishing & Revising Home Projects.

This is a mini-episode about adding style or updating things like kitchen cabinets and bookshelves using temporary wallpaper. Note: this is also a renter-friendly suggestion in the event that you don’t own your own home yet!  Also, this is a concept to chew on for updating a space without completely overhauling it.  As always this includes things to ask yourself about your own space and your reasons.

This is a compilation of all the research I did and the things I learned when we built our own home along with things I wished I had known. It includes research on what other people also wished they had known and thought of ahead of time. From what to expect for the building process to building terms and things you shouldn’t forget in the bathroom, this one hour podcast could save you thousands of dollars and much disappointment in your home-build so listen, take notes, and share it!

Builders; you might make it common practice to share this on social media and with any potential clients to educate them and avoid more change orders than you might otherwise have had. When clients consider all the details they want to include in their home upfront before the process begins, they will feel like they thought of everything, they will be educated on some terms and they’ll end up with a home that includes all the details they may have never thought of. Everybody wins so share this liberally. Also, I consult on home builds so send me an email if you'd like to collaborate on a project! kristina@spaceandreason.com

I believe that your space directly affects how you feel and function every moment that you are in your home, whether you are aware of it or not. Living in a home that doesn’t suit your temperament can be draining and exhausting. How fulfilled we are can have a big impact on our daily life across all kinds of contexts. By understanding where we fall on the introvert, extrovert, ambivert scale, we can address setting our homes up to support our natural instincts and increase our propensity for truly enjoying our home in a way that you feel you are being supported and nurtured.

When you stand at the street and look at your home, do you have a sightline to the area where you want to build the fence or place the hedge? What are your "WHY's" when considering fencing and have you thought about your taste first?

Have you considered a horizontal fence? A green fence? A modern fence? A varied height fence with corten steel panels?

With so many options to choose from, it's easy to get overwhelmed. This episode dives into both natural and hardscape fencing along with questions to ask yourself about the aesthetics of your yard and the functionality of it for the long haul.

Consider your outdoor environment. It can either relax you or stress you out. Is it comfortable? Do you want to linger? Do you see or hear birds? Do you butterflies visiting? Pollinators are responsible for 1 out of 3 bites of food we take each day, and yet pollinators are at a critical point in their own survival. Celebrate this years’ 50th anniversary of Earth Day by incorporating more nectar and pollen sources in your yard to help improve their health and numbers. Increasing the number of pollinator-friendly gardens and landscapes will help revive the health of bees, butterflies, birds, and other pollinators around the world. Matchy Matchy is not a thing anymore.  You probably know this, but the question is; do you know what TO DO about it? The lack of variety in colors, in wood and in textures made spaces flat, lack personality and look entry level…the opposite of a relaxing, designer abode.  How do you come to a combination of colors in the room that feel good but aren't matchy matchy?  We'll dive into that today.

  1. French lavender (Lavandula dentata) can grow well indoors. They’re not as fragrant as English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), but they are capable of adapting better to indoor environments. Two other good types to consider; Canary Island lavender (Lavandula canariensis) and Fern leaf lavender (Lavandula multifida) which tolerates wet conditions better than other lavenders.

This is a special VIDEO edition as an augmentation to Episode 8 of the Home Space and Reason Podcast about Managing Sentimental Things. When I was in the editing process of Ep8, I realized that the portion in which I talk about creating a family annual could be both exciting and extraordinarily intimidating to many people. And because I'm a visual person, I started to think about how helpful it would be if I did a bonus Podcast in video form - and so here it is.

.

The beauty of a Family Annual is that it can contain sentimental things in a hardcover book form that you might otherwise be tempted to keep like concert tickets, report cards, soccer team photos etc. With this method, they can all be documented in this book and the originals don’t need to be kept and organized. THEY CAN ADD UP over time, eventually requiring a lot of space and energy in organizing! It also gives me peace of mind that if my home burned down to the ground or flooded up to the windows, I could reorder these books and all is not lost. It’s an insurance policy of sorts for your memories!

What do you do with sentimental things? Is your home, basement or attic being taken over by them? Do you find it hard to get rid of ANYTHING? How do you determine what to keep and how do you let some of things go? How do you organize things that are keepsakes? Where does the need to hold onto these things come from?

The Portland artist I mentioned that does impressive illustrations of animals dressed in clothing is Ryan Berkley and his website and work can be found HERE.

If a child attends two years of preschool before Kindergarten, attends class 19 weeks in one school year and has an art activity twice per week, that’s 38 pieces of art- over six years (through 4th grade) - front loaded of course, since preschoolers tend to create more art than 4th graders for example. Natural light is essential to our happiness and sense of well being. Light gives you a feeling of peace and serenity. There are many types of lighting to discuss here…the natural kind and the man made kind. Light is a major contributor to the atmosphere you create. Are you giving thought to every purchase and ensuring each space is working to its maximum capability?

Get your home lighting right. Consider this puzzle carefully. It is an art. The wrong color bulb can make your living room feel cold and unwelcoming but the right one can make the same room feel warm, inviting and ideal to hang in for long periods of time. Does your home have different kinds of lighting for projects and for entertaining guests?

Here's a breakdown of light bulb color temperature:

•Soft white (2,700 to 3,000 Kelvin) is warm and yellow, the typical color range you get from incandescent bulbs. This light gives a warm and cozy feeling and is often best for living rooms, dens and bedrooms.

•Warm white (3,000 to 4,000 Kelvin) is more yellowish-white. These bulbs are best suited for kitchens and bathrooms.

•Bright white (4,000 to 5,000 Kelvin) is between white and blue tones. With a less cozy and more energetic feel, bulbs with this color range are best for work spaces (like a home office or garage)

•Daylight (5,000 to 6,500 Kelvin) has a more bluish tone. This light color will maximize contrast for colors, making it ideal for working, reading or applying makeup.
