Hi everyone,

Welcome to the channel - I'm Matt Williams, Founder of the ICARUS Drone Course.

I'm an ex RAF Helicopter Instructor and I've been flying model helicopters and planes for more than 20 years. We were flying our custom built, large model helicopters with gimbals and cameras attached to them, for the FIlm and TV industry before the drone revolution even began and we now run ICARUS - the world's largest and fastest growing Commercial Drone Training School.

I've been obsessed with aviation and business since I was a child and we've set up this channel to help educate those who are in, or entering, the exciting world of aviation and business and are building an awesome community of like-minded people.

Welcome to the channel - we've got content coming out all the time (and we're going to be building content on manned aviation soon, too... So stay tuned for updates on that).

TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR UK DRONE OPERATORS...

Hey everyone & welcome to the channel!

Today, a reminder for all UK PfCO holders (past and present) that if you don't have a valid PfCO on the 31st December 2020, then you'll have to do your commercial drone training course AGAIN, if you want those permissions in the future...

That's right, if you let your PfCO expire and don't have it valid when we move over to the new drone regulations, you'll need to do a GVC training course (including flight test in most cases) in order to be able to fly under the 'top' tier of permissions in the UK.

UPDATE ON THE CAA DMARES - DRONE OPERATOR RENEWAL SYSTEM - FAILS AND WINS!!!

Hey everyone, I hope you're all doing well!

Thanks so much for ALL your messages over the last few days - about the channel AND, more importantly, about the situation surrounding the CAA Drone Operator Registration Renewal Portal.

Looks like it's a 50 / 50 split... Some people are getting it done just fine and KEEPING their Operator ID's, with their registration date being preserved... And the rest of us... Well, we're still battling with no payment options, no renewal options and being given new Operator ID's and losing a few weeks of registration 'time' because the process hasn't worked as intended... FRUSTRATING isn't the word.

The CAA have been asking people to give them another week to get it sorted, so we'll do that, check again and keep you all up to date.

ALSO: Some interesting NEWS about the changes to the Registration Scheme in the next 12 months!

CAA DMARES - DRONE OPERATOR RENEWAL UPDATE & NEWS!!!

First off - I'm sorry I've been away for so long; needed to divert my attention to family and friends during the situation over the summer and make sure we made it through ok as a family... I hope you're all doing well & have managed to keep safe throughout! :)

Hey everyone, we've been asking the CAA as a community, what their plans were surrounding renewals for the Drone Operator Registration Scheme for a few months now... With little to no response from them.

Today, we have some news about the registration scheme and renewal of your Operator ID - in the form of the first round of Renewal Reminder Emails, which have been sent out to a bunch of registered operators... Great news that they're reminding us, but it doesn't seem like the renewal portal is working correctly at the moment...

Fingers crossed they'll fix it quickly and we can all keep using our 'current' Operator ID's, rather than having to be issued new ones but... We'll see!

CAA OFFICIALLY DELAY IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW Drone LAWS UNTIL 31 DECEMBER 2020!!!

Frustrating to many, great news for some... Hot off the press; the CAA announced a few minutes ago that the EU are delaying the Implementing Regulation which 'brings in' the new Drone Laws... Until the 31st December 2020.

The upcoming changes to the EASA/UK CAA Drone Laws in 2020 are causing concern for some... And rightly so in many cases. News just in - the amendments to the CAA CAP1789 (which was re-released in late April 2020) have been confirmed as correct by the CAA, at the time of creating this video... This is a game-changer because it opens up the DJI Mavic Mini to being able to be operated in the A1 category WITHOUT the need for any formal training AT ALL!!!

A couple of days ago, a drone got waaaaaay too close to the Blue Angels, whilst they were flying over Detroit... But, what could have happened if they had collided? I take a look at the comparisons of the impact energy when I had a bird-strike whilst flying on a combat mission in Iraq in 2010 and the types of energy levels which could be realised if a drone was to impact an aircraft whilst in flight...

THE PROCESS FOR GETTING PERMISSIONS TO FLY YOUR DRONE IN NO FLY ZONES AND CONTROLLED AIRSPACE HAS CHANGED!

A few weeks ago, the application process for getting permission to fly your drone inside NFZ's has reverted back to the 'old' system and the Airspace User Portal, which we'd just about got used to, has been scrapped.

If you now want to apply for permission to operate inside a NFZ, then you need to use the portal at the like here, to access the NATS application system for a 'non-standard flight' (NSF) approval.

Some interesting (and hopefully good, helpful) news on MTOM (Maximum Take Off Mass) for legacy drones being operated under the EASA / CAA Drone framework has been announced in the recent re-write of the CAA CAP 1789... Which should be welcome news to all UK drone pilots! :)

MASS CONFUSION or are we all just too stupid to understand what restrictions/easements the UK Government has put in place surrounding COVID-19 and the update yesterday?!

There weren't any MAJOR changes announced in the latest Government guidance, but, some of the alterations MAY suggest that we could tentatively begin to fly drones recreationally again - something I honestly didn't expect to be the case for some time yet... Provided that you live in England... Frustratingly, this doesn't appear to be a 'united front' by the Central and devolved Governments at the moment...

The UK Lockdown has been in place for a few weeks now and hopefully, we'll start to see things easing to some degree, soon...

Yesterday's video caused some incredible debate and showed that whilst the majority of you agreed that we shouldn't be flying recreationally with our drones at this time in the UK, some of you stated that you were flying in your gardens so you could enjoy flying... Whilst this isn't illegal in and of itself; you need to make sure you're aware of the rules and can maintain the required separation distances at all times.

Which many of us cannot...

The UK Lockdown has been in place for a few weeks now and hopefully, we'll start to see things easing to some degree, soon...

In the meantime though, we're seeing some healthy debate surrounding whether or not you should be flying your drone during this time. In today's video, I give my thoughts on recreational / hobby drone flying and commercial drone operations during the lockdown and my opinion surrounding any choices we might make to go flying... OR NOT! :)

Lots of people are getting in touch at the moment to see what courses they can take (in addition to the mandatory, CAA Drone Training Courses such as the GVC, PfCO and A2 C of C), in order to help 'upskill' themselves and make the most of any 'down time' which many of us are experiencing.

This seems to have allowed some scope for people to be convinced to do courses (often very expensive ones), which just aren't required and WON'T HELP advance your cause...

A few hours ago, DJI announced the launch of the highly anticipated DJI MAVIC AIR 2 DRONE... And, as I speculated a few days ago; it hasn't got all of the required features to make it a C2 certified drone.

UK CAA EASA RULES START DATE CHANGE - ANNOUNCED!!!

The UK CAA have today announced that they are officially delaying the implementation/start date of the new EASA Drone Rules & Regulations until at least 1st November 2020, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and it's impacts on society.

A bold but pragmatic move from the regulator and, although it will be frustrating for some (particularly those who have already invested in the new qualifications, in anticipation of the EASA Regulations going 'live' on 1st July) it's probably the most sensible decision for all, at the present time.

In this video, I give my thoughts and guidance on the potential impacts of this announcement and quickly cover the message from the CAA, for those who haven't seen it yet...

WHAT IS THE 'KING OF DRONE PERMISSIONS' IN THE UK?

The CAA's mechanism for getting drone permissions, that are better than the 'standard permissions' is the Operating Safety Case. Yes - when the new EASA regulations go 'live' on the 1st July 2020, there are 'bolt-ons' in the framework which should eventually allow you to be able to fly in congested areas, close to uninvolved persons... However, this seems like it's going to be at least 2-3 years off and will require additional training AND specific aircraft - whereas the OSC process remains the same as ever and is becoming increasingly 'useful' as competition in the industry increases.

CAN USING A FLIGHT SIMULATOR MAKE LEARNING TO FLY CHEAPER?

Whilst talking in the last video about the 5 main reasons I could see which are preventing General Aviation in the UK from growing, the big one which we omitted was the cost of learning to fly.

Obviously, this is really high... But, are people helping themselves? With how awesome modern flight simulators like X-Plane and the upcoming Microsoft Flight Sim 2020 are, could you save a bunch of time (and therefore, money) by learning lots of things by flying and practising in a flight sim?

CAA UPDATE - UPCOMING 2020 DRONE LAWS VS UK WITHDRAWAL FROM EUROPE.

We've had confirmation from the CAA, that the Drone Regulations in the UK are set to change to the new EASA regulations on July 1st 2020 as per the current plan.

This means that the only options for getting enhanced permissions (over and above having to operate in the A3 subcategory of the Open Category) are to complete either the A2 C of C, the GVC or gain an OSC.

IF YOU HAVE A PfCO - KEEP IT CURRENT, DON'T LET IT LAPSE AND/OR GET ONE IN PLACE IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED YOUR TRAINING... BEFORE 1st JULY 2020. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL MEAN YOU HAVE TO COMPLETE AN ADDITIONAL TRAINING COURSE WITH A CAA RAE BEFORE YOU WILL BE GRANTED PERMISSIONS AGAIN BY THE CAA!

UK TO WITHDRAW FROM EASA - HOW WILL THIS IMPACT THE NEW DRONE REGULATIONS?

The drone industry in the UK is in a state of flux at the moment; mainly due to the proposed changes in the UK Drone regulations, to the new, EASA regulations...

There's already a fair dollop of confusion surrounding the upcoming changes; not helped at all by the CAA and DfT REFUSING to listen to the community and give us all some strategic direction.

This was exacerbated over the weekend by the media announcement by the Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps 'letting slip; to the media that the UK will formally withdraw from EASA.

We've asked the CAA for definitive direction on this and at the moment; we've not been given and black and white answers.

So, here's my open letter to the CAA and Grant Shapps; asking for them to confirm the current position and provide ALL OF US with some strategic communications and guidance, so we can work out what the HELL the future looks like for us over the coming months.

NEW DRONE REGULATIONS ARE COMING TO THE UK THIS SUMMER - WHAT ARE THEY?

Over the last few months, since the UK CAA announced the upcoming changes to the UK Drone Regulations which come into effect on the 1st July 2020; we've tried to get the message out to as many people as possible. Unfortunately, the changes are quite complicated at first glance... So we decided to try and bust the confusion and make them as simple to understand as we possibly could!

IS THE DJI MAVIC MINI THE BEST DRONE FOR COMMERCIAL DRONE PILOTS?

If you look at the new EASA / CAA Drone rules which come into force in the UK on the 1st July 2020, there are huge changes... And actually, dare we say it, they open up some incredible opportunities for everyone to be able to make money from drones without necessarily needing to have any qualifications.

However, what's going to be the best drone to take advantage of the new rules until DJI and the other drone manufacturers come out with 'EC' Compliant drones in the new EC Drone Categories (such as the C1 and C2 categories)?

We think we may have the answer... And it's smaller and cheaper than you might expect - a round of applause please, to the DJI Mavic Mini Drone and the CAA A2 C of C ( A2 Certificate of Competency ) qualification!

The CAA proposed charges for drone operators are available now in the document here: https://consultations.caa.co.uk/finan...

It's worth a look and you can find the proposed scheme of charges for the upcoming fiscal year on pages 21-25.

On the whole, I'd say they're actually not too drastic in terms of increases/changes (although far from what we'd all like to be paying, for sure)!

IS THE DJI MAVIC MINI 'BEACH BODY READY' OR DOES IT NEED TO GO ON A DIET BEFORE THE 1ST JULY 2020?

The DJI Mavic Mini, in particular, is currently exempt from the requirement for its operator to complete the CAA Drone Registration (DMARES), in the UK... At the moment... BUT, this changes on the 1st July 2020.

WHY THOUGH? We keep getting asked this question because it's '249g, so it's under to weight'... And here lies the difference - the aircraft can lift at 249g BUT it's MAXIMUM TAKEOFF WEIGHT os over 249g.

So what does this mean?

YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO APPLY FOR A CAA PfCO AFTER 30th JUNE 2020!!!

We have had confirmation from the CAA today that they will NOT BE ACCEPTING NQE RECOMMENDATIONS for the award of a PfCO AFTER the 1st July 2020. This means that anyone who hasn't completed their NQE training yet (and isn't training with a new CAA RAE - more on that in a couple of days! ;) ), OR anyone who lets their PfCO lapse and isn't in possession of an RAE certificate, will NOT be able to get an initial issue of a PfCO or renew their PfCO if it lapses...

So, if you are in the process of completing your PfCO and are worried about running out of time, give the UAVHUB Team a shout and see how we can help and if you have a PfCO - make sure you KEEP IT VALID!

IF YOU'VE GOT A PfCO, CAN YOU JOIN SOMEONE's GVC? IF YOU'VE GOT A GVC, CAN YOU JOIN SOMEONE'S PfCO?

We've finally had confirmation from the CAA surrounding the question of whether people who have (or have had) a PfCO can join a GVC... Or will you have to do the GVC Course?

Conversely, if you've completed a GVC Course and have an RAE Recommendation, will you be able to join someone's PfCO if they have one and have decided to keep renewing that and stay in that system?

Have the EASA Drone Rules, which the CAA are adopting on 1st July 2020, KILLED Hobby and FPV flying in the UK?

As most people are now hopefully aware, the drone regulations in the UK are changing on the 1st July 2020... But, do the new rules allow hobby and recreational drone and model aircraft pilots to continue enjoying flying or do they totally destroy the opportunities to enjoy this fantastic hobby?

To Renew your PfCO or not?!?

The CAA Drone regulations are changing on 1st July 2020 and we're getting an increasing number of enquiries each day with people asking 'What do I do, my PfCO stops being valid on 1st July'... 'How can the CAA cancel my PfCO on the 1st July, it cost me a fortune to get!' and 'is it worth me renewing my PfCO or completing my PfCO Course'?

ARE THE NQEs EXPLOITING PfCO STUDENTS?!?

With upcoming changes to the UK CAA Drone regulations on the 1st July 2020 (we're set to switch to the EASA Drone regulations on that date...), there is some pressure on the Professional Drone Community to learn, adopt and begin to operate in new ways...

However, it seems as though some of the NQEs are using this pressure as an opportunity to exploit their students and customers... Hitting them with financial implications if they don't get things completed by certain dates and, in some cases delivering misinformation surrounding the changes.

Or, EVEN WORSE; PROVIDING NO INFORMATION AT ALL!!!

We're being contacted by an increasing number of 'concerned' UK CAA PfCO holders and Drone Operators, who have been selected for audit by the CAA.

This process is one which can be pretty tense, particularly if it's your first one, but, there are some simple steps that you can undertake, which should help make things MUCH LESS STRESSFUL and can help make the audit visit itself run smoothly...

The CAA's new Drone Qualification, the A2 C of C is going to be a TOTAL GAMECHANGER for the drone industry in the UK... Allowing us to be able to do things that until now, just simply haven't been possible with a drone commercially (without a very expensive drone and some serious OSC Permissions)!

Could the A2 CofC be the ULTIMATE and BEST qualification the CAA have EVER ALLOWED? Or, will people be better off keeping their PfCO and then moving across to the GVC?

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the channel - in this video, we take a look at the additional Bolt On modules which are going to form an intrinsic part of the CAA GVC (General Visual Line of Sight Certificate). These bolt ons are going to FINALLY allow drone operators to LEGALLY fly beyond the distance at which they can currently fly and keep their drone in VLOS ( Visual line of sight). This can be done now, but it's only really possible by using the fairly complicated Operating Safety Case (OSC) process... Something which will be changing fairly drastically with the upcoming GVC, thankfully! :)

Is the GVC ( General Visual Line of Sight Certificate ) the replacement for the CAA PfCO in 2020? What does the course look like and what will passing the GVC Course and getting your CAA GVC certificate allow you to do when the new drone regulations and rules come into force in July 2020?

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the channel - in this video, we take a look at how to label your drone... Yeah sure, you can do it with a piece of paper sellotaped on, or a sharpie type pen (if you're happy to permanently label your drone as 'yours'...), but we highly recommend grabbing a label maker and making your own labels.

Don't forget to carry spares with you too - just in case yours fall off, so you can pop another one on and carry on flying!

Another thing that's worthy of note and has been mentioned by quite a few people are that there are quite a few 'fake' sites popping up on the internet at the moment (including some label sites), which seem to be running you through the CAA's registration process... Don't give away any of your information unless you're happy that you're either on the CAA's official drone registration site OR you're happy that you're providing personal details to a company/site which you are happy with...

I've just returned from presenting at the RAF Benson Flight Safety Day... It's been a long one and meant getting on the road at 0600 this morning to make the journey from the Midlands, down to Oxfordshire, present, and then get back again to the studio to shoot this... But, going 'back to my roots' today and speaking to so many front line RAF personnel, made me realise that we need to get back to spreading the message, as a community of both manned and unmanned aviators, that we all need to share the small amount of airspace we have available to us in the UK... Safely!

There's only a few hours left until drone pilots in the UK have to make sure that they complete the CAA's Drone and Model Aircraft Registration and Education Scheme... And lots of people have already signed up by the sounds of things (ourselves, begrudgingly, included!).

However, it seems as though there are still LOTS of people out there who are confused as to what they need to do and if it even affects them.

Fingers crossed, this is the final video we'll need to make on the subject... But, that's probably a little bit like hoping that the CAA would listen to the community and put in place a Registration Scheme which was fit for purpose in the first place... AND THEN INFORMED PEOPLE ABOUT IT.

Hi everybody! Well, we've just about recovered from yesterday's YouTube Channel/Subscriber Seminar - a FREE event we laid on for 60 subscribers to learn the ins and outs of how to get a CAA Operating Safety Case for their drone operations. In today's video, we're tackling the next elephant in the drone room, which surrounds the DJI Mavic Mini, the CAA Drone Registration Scheme AND the fact that people think that because it's under 250g, not only do they not need to register to operate it (technically correct), but also, they can fly it anywhere they wish... Which, to be frank, in the UK at the moment - just isn't true!

So, the UK CAA Drone and Model Aircraft Registration and Education Scheme (DMARES) launched a few weeks ago now... And over 33,000 people have registered to date. The requirement to formally register is only a few days away now BUT, there are still lots of questions AND LOTS of CONFUSION surrounding the implementation of the scheme...

The biggest of these is something that we warned the CAA and the DfT about, a number of times but seems to have fallen on deaf ears (along with everything else we've been saying).

The CAA MUST inform all registered people that the registration DOES NOT constitute a 'Permission from the CAA to operate drones Commercially', which it is becoming increasingly apparent, that lots of people now think is the case!

So, let's apply a little pressure to the CAA as a community and get them to send an email to everyone who's registered on the new 'database' / Excel Spreadsheet (lol), telling people that holding an Operator / Flyer ID does not allow them to get out and fly commercially... For now!

With the recent press announcement that DJI trialled their drone-to-phone tech (called Remote ID), in a park in Toronto over the last couple of weeks - we thought it was worth pulling together a bit of guidance on how some of the currently available aviation 'sensing' and 'location' technologies work... These systems allow aircraft to let people know where they are without the requirement for radar and no-doubt help[ improve safety in the skies.

But why is this important for us to know as drone operators? Well, we're under increasing scrutiny from other airspace users AND some of the tech is already being implemented into enterprise level drones... We're expecting to see the move across to all drones, regardless fo size, being required to hold some level of 'electronic conspicuity' in the next few years too...

So, grab a brew and get to know your 'EC' from your 'FLARM' and your ADS-B in from your ADS-B IN/OUT! ;)

We started out our journey on YouTube a few months ago to achieve a few things... The first thing was to try and get the CORRECT information out to the drone community and to try and create a repository of FREE, helpful information which Drone Pilots & Business Owners could go to if they wanted to learn how to build and grow a successful drone business.

One of the other reasons we started the channel was to prove a concept that we had of GROWTH HACKING in the digital landscape, using YouTube as our platform of choice and video as our content delivery media.

We NEVER thought we'd get 500 followers, let alone, surpass 1500, just 2 months after we started pushing out content every working day!

So, thank you all for helping us achieve that - and for all the comments you leave when we produce content that you find useful...

BUT, there are a few messages and amazing learning points, which have come from the work over the past few months on the channel, which ALL BUSINESS OWNERS SHOULD BE AWARE OF - particularly in the drone industry!

REMEMBER: If you're trying to start a YouTube channel in order to help you build a subscriber base and market your business; then the best thing to do is to start... Yesterday! If that idea fills you with dread; then fear not - we were the same in the beginning and our videos we're pretty ST... But, we created our first 100 videos as quickly as we could - learnt a LOT along the way as a result of forcing ourselves to get it done AND the beauty of this? No-one was watching the ST videos we made in the early days, because we didn't have an audience...

Knowing your craft and building your capabilities and abilities as a drone pilot as REALLY Important... That goes without saying. BUT, you also need to start to understand the importance of getting good training, finding a drone training company (CAA NQE in the UK) who'll not just take your money and get you a PfCO certificate (drone license) but will also HELP YOU LEARN, BUILD and GROW as an operator and a business.

Before you hand over your money, look at WHO you're investing with (yes, you need to think of this training as an investment) and what social proof they have. What are other people saying about them and how have those people found their journey to PfCO and beyond?

You can then carry this learning forward as you build your drone business... Get out there and get yourself some social proof, so you can have the best shot of selling yourself to clients AND stand out from the crowd!

We've seen a bunch of comments and conversations over the last few days, surrounding the DJI Mavic Mini... And, as always, the misinformation doing the rounds is a little concerning. So, we've pulled together the top questions/comments we've seen surrounding the DJI Mavic Mini Drone / Flying Camera ( ;) ) and have answered them here, for anyone who is considering getting one or already has one on pre-order.

1) Requirements for operating the DJI Mavic Mini are the same in the UK, as they are for any other drone - you need to abide by the ANO (Air Navigation Order), which is broken down into an easily understandable format in the UK Drone Code (Link Below).

2) You CANNOT 'fly anywhere' in the UK with this drone; despite the DJI marketing... You still need to remain 150 metres away from Congested Areas, unless you're operating it commercially, in accordance with a Permission for Commercial Operations.

3) You'll need to stay a minimum of 50 metres away from Persons, Vessels, Vehicles and Structures, not under your control, despite it being under 250g.

4) You STILL need a PfCO or a Permission for Commercial Operation from the UK CAA, in order to be able to fly this drone for commercial gain, at the moment, in the United Kingdom.

5) You still need to get permission from the appropriate authority if you want to fly inside a Flight Restriction Zone ( FRZ ).

6) You will be exempt from the requirement to undertake the DMARES in the UK - BUT ONLY IF you use the DJI Mavic Mini in it's 'naked' form... Put the stickers on, prop guards etc and you'll be over 250g and thus, YOU WILL HAVE TO REGISTER AS A DRONE OPERATOR.

Please Note - I messed up in the excitement of shooting the video, sorry! The drone weighs 249g WITH the larger battery installed and 199g with the smaller battery installed...

7) You will still need to register, even under 249g IF and WHEN we switch over to the EASA regulations in June 2020... As this drone has a camera.

Lots of drone retailers and shops often give you a 'straight answer', but this is generally based on how much you've got to spend... And to be fair, something like the DJI Mavic Pro 2 is an incredible drone as it offers amazing features at an incredible price-point (the Mavic 2 Pro is the drone we now see ~95% of people turn up to their flight examinations with at the moment).

From a business perspective, if you're looking to get a drone in order to start or to grow a drone business, then you need to look at things a little differently and there's a process we walk people through when helping them decide which drone to buy... Which we talk about in the video! :)

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the channel - in this video, we've found another Airport who are discriminating against Drone Pilots and not allowing them to operate inside their Flight Restriction Zone... FRZ. Whilst we fully understand why sometimes this may be the appropriate course of action... AND OBVIOUSLY, FLight safety is always a priority... This time, its Leicester Aerodrome, denying a drone flight permission inside an area WHICH THEIR TRAFFIC CAN'T FLY, due to their own noise abatement procedure!!!

If you've had any issues with access to airspace as a drone operator, then please let us know. We can't fight every case, but we'll do our best to help educate the relevant airspace managers and, of course, file the relevant complaint with the airspace regulators, the CAA!

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the channel - in this video, we take a look at a really dangerous factor which Drone Pilots, particularly those operating Professionally / Commercially, need to be aware of.

I'm sure we've all been there... Not necessarily when operating a drone; it's probably happened to you in your 'normal walk of life' too... We've been out somewhere for the day, say at an airshow - or visited the beach for the day and it's almost impossible to stay awake on the drive home!

There's a physiological mechanism going on which means that, even though we might have had enough sleep the night before (so we're not tired), we still can't stay awake.

So, what is this super-powerful natural process that causes this to happen?

It's not tiredness - it's fatigue... And it's something that we discuss in great detail in the manned aviation world. How it happens, the effects of it (which are very similar to tiredness), how to best combat it and how to recover from it.

We explore some of these concepts in this video, as we think it's really important for Drone Pilots to be aware of it. Particularly when you look at the shoot schedules associates with most productions and 'drone jobs'! Let's spread the word about it and try to help prevent FATIGUE induced crashes and accidents whilst flying... But more importantly, I'd say (having suffered from this myself whilst flying full-sized aircraft and drones) - let's make sure we can all get home safely at the end of the day/job.

Please share this message to as many people as possible - we teach it on our PfCO courses, but I know that others don't, so let's keep pulling the community closer, looking out for each other and helping each other to learn, build and grow!

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the channel!

In this video we take a (hopefully) final look at the 'Gatwick Drone Incident', we've discussed this in previous videos, most latterly only a few weeks ago. As we mentioned in those videos, we have also put in numerous freedom of information requests to both the relevant police forces and the CAA - to no avail.

Finally, the enquiry has been completed and the 'conclusion' announced.

There's actually very little in that I think the community as a whole hadn't already gleaned however, there are a few interesting pieces which are worth particular note.

The main one of these being that Asst Chief Constable Dave Miller, head of operations command said in a statement regarding the enquiry: "The incident was not deemed terror-related and there is no evidence to suggest it was either state-sponsored, campaign or interest-group led. The investigation has identified, researched and ruled out 96 people ‘of interest’. No further arrests have been made."

The fact that they have even mentioned that it was not state-sponsored I find rather concerning; why was that even a line of enquiry?

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the channel!

In the UK, we're approaching that time of year where it's possible to get some incredible shots early in the morning and during the early evening. As the sun gets lower in the sky and the golden hour actually garners us a full hour of opportunity (when the sky is clear and not doing the 'usual'!) to take advantage of the incredible lighting at this time of year and get some stunning photos and videos from our drones.

One of the things that we do start to see at this time of year within the drone community is a combination of people taking advantage of this beautiful lighting, more reasonable times to access it and combining it with misty and foggy mornings and evenings.

The ethereal nature of the environment and the shots we can capture during these times are an opportunity which many can't resist. However it's really important to understand that there are some potentially fairly large implications associated with flying an aircraft in a very moist environment such as when it is foggy or misty.

This is particularly pertinent when you are looking to operate in these environments as we move towards late autumn and throughout the winter when the temperature drops below approximately 4°C. This can place your aircraft (drone) in a situation where it can be exposed to lots of moisture and the potential for ice to form on the blades in particular which can very quickly make an amazing looking shot go wrong quite quickly.

This is something which full-sized aviators are vehemently aware of however it doesn't seem to be something which is disseminated to drone operators.

Hopefully, by somebody watching this video we can help prevent an accident or an incident or if nothing else make all operators aware of the potential for problems and how to avoid them if possible.

Welcome to the channel - in this video, we take a look at a question which we have been asked many times over the last few years. It also popped up in emails the channel over the last couple of weeks so, here it is: when you have the PfCO can you also fly recreationally, or for a hobby?

The answer is actually fairly straightforward and hopefully doesn't come as a surprise to many of you out there, however, again, because the question is being asked fairly regularly we thought it worth getting the answers out there to you.

So, the long and the short of it is that if you want to operate under the auspices of your PfCO, you need to ensure that you do the pre-requisite elements such as risk assessment, flight planning and ensuring that you appropriately log any of these activities.

If you want to operate on a non-commercial basis i.e. for a hobby or 'recreational flight', then you just need to abide by the drone code and the Air Navigation Order (ANO), remembering to maintain a minimum of 50m from Persons, Vessels, Vehicles and Structures (PVVS) at all times and staying more than 150m clear of a congested area.

Welcome to the channel - in this video, we take a look at something which I think often gets overlooked by drone operators; working in remote places, alone.

Often called lone working; it's a big deal in lots of industries and is something which is avoided WHEREVER POSSIBLE... It doesn't seem to be something which people are aware of, made aware of, or taught about whilst they're learning to operate or thinking about operating a drone.

There are lots of safety implications surrounding lone working and it's something which we've always avoided within our drone operations by ensuring that the teams we sent out were always a minimum of two people.

Whilst I'm aware that it's not always possible or feasible for people to work in this way; if you are going to go out and fly your drone / work alone, particularly in a remote environment, then make sure you've got the processes in place for people to know where you are and where to come and look for you, if you don't 'check-in' with them as planned.

Welcome to the channel - in this video, we take a look at if you can take Drone Batteries on an Airliner with you.

We then look at the circumstances when you can carry on your LiPOs and what you need to do if you can and wish to take them on board with you.

We've operated drones all over the world & one of the biggest logistical challenges was always if and how we could get enough batteries out to whichever 'theatre' or location we were going to operate in. Sometimes we could take the batteries on board with us, but sometimes there was just no way and we'd either have to send the batteries 6-8 weeks before we left to go to the gig, or, on occasion, we had to get production to purchase them in-country for us, have them there when we arrived and then leave them behind when we left...

With all these issues surrounding the shipping od LiPO batteries for drones; it's definitely something that's worth knowing about and bearing in mind if and when you want to travel overseas with your drone!

Sorry we're a little late with this one today; we started the move to our new offices today and, as you'll see - we had a couple of technical difficulties!

Welcome to the channel - in this video, we take a look at what you need to do as a PfCO Holder, to fly your drone at night safely... AND in accordance with your CAA PfCO (Permission for Commercial Operations).

With rumours about a recent crash with a drone at night, in a heavily congested area; it appears that some people may not actually be aware of the requirements placed upon us in the UK, as Remote Pilots (RPs) of Drones, in addition to the requirements for just flying in the daylight.

There are a couple of sections in the PfCO wording, which outline the basics of the additional requirements and it's essential that, as Remote Pilots and/or SUA Operators; we ensure that we know them in order to be allowed to continue to exercise the rights and privileges granted to us by the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority), allowing us to fly our SUAs commercially at night.

So, the UK CAA have FINALLY announced a little more detail on the Drone and model aircraft registration and education service (DMARES)... It's about as disappointing and, if it was even possible; slightly more frustrating than the original proposals!

Big points to take away:

Operator ID: Anyone who owns or is responsible for the operation of a drone or model aircraft weighing between 250g and 20Kg MUST register as a Remote Operator and obtain an Operator ID. This costs £9 and is renewed annually… You must be aged 18 or over to register as a Remote Operator. Your Operator ID must be placed on your model aircraft or drone and be visible if required for inspection. As far as we’re aware, it will be possible to place this ID inside somewhere like a battery bay, so that it isn’t always visible; particularly useful for those people who are flying scale model aircraft.

Flyer ID: Anyone who wants to fly or operate a model aircraft or drone in the UK, as of the 30th November will need to pass a 20 question online examination. The pass mark for this is a minimum of 16 correct answers and the learning required for the examination will be contained in a new ‘Drone and Model Aircraft Code’ which forms part of the DMARES. The questions will come from the learning which the CAA provide and even if you fail, you can keep learning the code and attempting it (at no cost). Once you’ve passed the test, you’ll be issued with your Flyer ID. There are currently no age requirements for the scheme but it should be noted that children under the age of 13 can only register with a parent or guardian present.

It now costs £9 instead of £16.50 to register as an operator, annually.

Welcome to the channel - in this video, we take a look at a question which has just come in, as a direct response to a thread in one of the UK CAA PfCO Facebook Groups... The question surrounds what constitutes 'control' of Persons, Vessels, Vehicles and Structures, according to the CAA and, if you can get to within a distance of say, 20 metres of a towerblock if you've got permission from the building custodian (or whoever controls/can grant permissions), for you to fly your drone closer than 50 metres from the structure... Without getting permission from all of the individuals who are occupying the building.

We dive into the latest version of the CAA CAP 722 (v7.3 at the time of creating the video) and look at what is required of us as a Remote Pilot (RP) and/or SUA Operator, in order to be operating within the rules and regulations...

Almost a year later, and, as a community, we've still not been told what it was or if there was even a drone there after all...

The impact that this 'incident' had on the drone community (and potentially aviation as a whole) shouldn't be underestimated.

Welcome to the channel - in this video, I'm afraid that in this one, I go off on a bit of a rant, discussing where the UK Government are getting their 'Drone Experts' from; to present evidence to the Select Committee(s), Parliament, Parliamentary Steering Groups etc...

Who decides who gets to present the evidence and represent the industry?

WHY are a small group (of seemingly unaware and uninvolved) people being used over and over again to represent us all?

Are these people deliberately being selected by the 'powers that be', because they know that they'll say what the Government wants and needs to hear?

I'm definitely no conspiracist and I'm not suggesting that I'd be remotely appropriate to represent us, as a community at these levels/events, but what I am suggesting, is that we, as a community of drone operators need to look at who is choosing the people who represent us and who are being chosen to represent... And, if we're not happy about the level of representation, we need to do something about it!

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the channel - in this video, we take a look at whether adding a parachute to your drone actually makes it safer...

More manufacturers are starting to make small and (relatively affordable) parachutes for drones like the DJI Mavic 2 Pro, Phantom 4 series and the DJI Inspire 2 - but, does adding a parachute to your aircraft make it safer, or does it actually increase the chances of something going wrong with it - which may lead to needing to use the parachute in the first place?!

Many of the drones we see now, have the manufacturer recommended maximum take-off mass, set to the actual weight of the aircraft, so surely; putting a parachute system onto these platforms makes the SUAS operate at a weight above the maximum recommended by the designer...

Lots of people see or think that adding a parachute to your drone will also allow you to get the much-coveted 'operating safety case' (OSC) from the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) but... This isn't necessarily the case - in our extensive experience, the CAA don't look at the fact that a parachute has been added to a drone and give an immediate 'YES, you're good to go on an OSC'... They'll weigh up the entire Safety Management System (SMS), of which the parachute forms a (admittedly significant) part; but it's not the magic bullet that some people seem to think.

Can you even do it? Surely, if you want to take a look at your own roof or chimney, then you can, because you own the property, right?!

Well - there may be more to it than that and there's a bunch of things to consider! Just because you own the property (or even if you rent it), it doesn't automatically mean that you can fly over or around it. You've got to abide by the separation distances shown in the Air Navigation Order and then, any additional requirements if you want to exercise the privileges granted to you by the CAA under any issued permissions (PfCO) if you have one.

The CAA are mandated by the DfT (Department for Transport), to ensure that turnaround times for PfCO Applications and Renewals is 28 working days. The questions is; with the number of applications they're receiving each day what should we be doing as Drone Operators, to ensure that we're doing our part and keeping the CAA's administrative burden as low as possible?

Welcome to the channel - in this video, we take a look at what you need to do and who you should call if you want to make sure you can fly safely in places where Military Aircraft may also be carrying out low flying training.

In the UK, military aircraft from the Royal Air Force (RAF), Navy and Army Air Corps can all fly inside the UK Military Low Flying System at various heights - exactly where we, as drone operators may also be flying. On top of this, lots of the places where drone pilots go to film amazing landscapes, interesting structures and subjects, are the same kind of places that the military regularly use to practise low flying, or use as simulated targets or turning points.

We've seen drone videos from the Mach Loop (mentioned in this video) in North Wales, of low flying jets, taken FROM drones - which is crazy. I can't count the number of times I used the Ribblehead viaduct as a turning point for a low-level navigation sortie during my Military Flying career and yet, there are hundreds of drone videos of it...

We NEED to make sure that we're sharing the air safely, so that we can all continue to use our drones safely & hopefully this video goes some way towards explaining how we can do this-especially if we know we'll be flying somewhere that the military use for low flying too.

So, if in doubt, give the Low Flying Cell a call and let them know where you'll be flying, and when... They'll then do their best to disseminate that information to pilots who may be low flying in that area.

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the channel - in this video, I'm looking for a call to (imaginary) arms!

For years, we've been battling with London Oxford Airport, on behalf of our students and some other Professional Drone operators, to get them to realise that they're impacting Flight Safety, by CHARGING drone users to operate inside their ATZ (now, their FRZ).

As drone operators, we HAVE to get permission to operate a drone in their airspace (now the FRZ, NOT the controlled airspace around the airport and/or the ATZ) BUT, London Oxford Airport along with a couple of others are levying a fee in order for people to fly their drones in these areas.

The same cannot be said for 'regular' air traffic... Who can book in to utilise the airspace for FREE and without any of the same restrictions or requirements.

As the drone community, we must be aware of the privileges which we are entitled to exercise under the Air Navigation Order and the fact that, provided we are complying with the regulations, we have as much right to access and use airspace as any other airspace user.

As you can see from the video, it took 5 times as long on the phone to get the information required, the forms to be sent over AND, we weren't guaranteed permission even after compelting the paperwork... It then took less than 1 minute to get permission from Air Traffic Control (ATC), to get permission to do a similar body of work with a full-sized helicopter.

In addition, the paperwork shows a charge for drone permissions of £120 (albeit over 7Kg [when the CAA no longer delineate between any weight of drone in the 0-20Kg category]).

Whilst I fully appreciate the differences in licensing, training etc behind both sides of this conversation; the fact still remains - an airspace manager/operator SHOULD NOT be charging for access to the airspace which they are granted 'ownership' of by the CAA. Moreover, if they are going to charge drone operators, then they also have to charge manned aircraft... They cannot discriminate between the two types of airspace user.

This is all even more disappointing, given that we've spoken to them a number of times on the phone, via email and even had a FACE TO FACE meeting with the Airport Management; at which meeting, they agreed to waive any costs for drone users to access 'their' airspace... Now they appear to have reneged on this promise.

Welcome to the channel - I'm Matt Williams, Founder of the ICARUS Drone Course.

I'm an ex RAF Helicopter Instructor and I've been flying model helicopters and planes for more than 20 years. We were flying our custom built, large model helicopters with gimbals and cameras attached to them, for the FIlm and TV industry before the drone revolution even began and we now run ICARUS - the world's largest and fastest growing Commercial Drone Training School.

I've been obsessed with aviation and business since I was a child and we've set up this channel to help educate those who are in, or entering, the exciting world of aviation and business and are building an awesome community of like-minded people.

Welcome to the channel - in this video, we take a look at how and when you can fly your drone in controlled airspace. The rules have changed fairly recently and there are now certain things you can technically do inside controlled airspace which previously would have required permission. We also look at how the new FRZ's (Drone Flight Restriction Zones) affect what we have to do in order to get/when we need to get permission from Air Traffic Control or the Controlling Authority for the Aerodrome...

Welcome to the channel - in this video, we take a look at how old you need to be to operate under a CAA PfCO (Permission for Commercial Operation) in the UK. Often referred to as a drone 'license', it's quite surprising when it comes to the age requirements for being a commercial drone operator (or Remote Pilot - the one, 'waggling' the sticks of the drone) and the requirements for being the 'SUA Operator' (the person who oversees the Remote Pilots who are flying the aircraft).
