Welcome back to Too Smart For This! This week, Alexis is joined by Olay Noel for a delightful conversation on all things self-care, entrepreneurship, and more.
The Atlanta, Georgia native knew from a young age that she was destined to walk the catwalk, drawing heavy inspiration from Naomi Campbell. While earning her degree from Kennesaw State University, Olay took a trip to New York City and returned with a modeling contract from Wilhelmina Models, the world-renowned agency that has had such clients as Naomi Sims, Anjelica Huston, Beverly Johnson, Patti Hansen, and Whitney Houston among others. Despite facing adversity as a woman of color in the modeling industry, Olay has continued to book countless projects including Essence, Cosmopolitan, and L’Officiel. Upon her parents’ advice, she has expanded her repertoire and started her own clothing and jewelry line with her sister that highlights the Black Diaspora, calledMIANIK, which has been in business since 2019.

Body acceptance - is it possible? Alexis is diving in in this new solo episode format!
Show Notes:
0:40 Let’s talk about loving your body!
3:32 Struggling with one’s appearance is a universal experience
3:50 Where do these unrealistic standards come from?
3:58 Before we pass judgement on others, we must heal first
4:04 What forces are women up against?
4:50 Society’s priorities for thinness don’t have to be our priorities
5:20 Questioning our backgrounds as a means to divest from societal body expectations
5:34 Let’s analyze body trends of the past few years!
6:23 Rampant fatphobia pervaded 2013 - 2016
6:55 Our perception of what was “large” was incredibly warped by the media
8:34 We’ve been exposed to dangerous rhetoric not just on the Internet, but also through tabloids in the grocery store line
9:05 What we glamorize online becomes the norm
9:58 Events like the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show applauded thinness – making us believe our accomplishments didn’t matter if we weren’t thin
10:25 Impossible to discuss body trends without mentioning how the Kardashians have (negatively) impacted our culture
11:22 From 2016 - 2020 we saw a dialogue opening about women’s bodies – due in part to harmful things said by Trump
12:06 Comparing your body to others is a slippery, harmful slope
13:27 Despite models like Ashley Graham entering the mainstream, the belief that we can cultivate a body positive culture was cracking
14:16 Since 2020, we’ve entered a positivity era!
15:54 Podcast was started to reject belief that I need to look a certain way in order to be successful
16:26 2023 has brought open talks of plastic surgery and Ozempic use – people are unhappy with what they look like and are changing accordingly
17:01 Pressure of looking good or being thin has never left the mainstream
17:37 It’s impossible to let go of inner biases when we’re constantly told you need to look a certain way
17:52 It’s naive to think all women will accept themselves and not want to change further when society tells us to operate otherwise
22:19 Important to forgive yourself for having toxic thoughts – it’s natural to want to resemble the norm
24:54 We dont give our bodies enough credit!
25:11 You can’t hate yourself into loving yourself
25:30 Learn to trust your own intuition about your body
25:47 Give yourself grace! How can I be nicer to myself?
26:06 Do some research – knowing more about your body leads to a healthier life
27:25 Uncouple the idea that success and happiness are connected to what you look like
28:21 Need to consciously change your opinion on what bodies are “supposed” to look like

Hello my friends and welcome back to Too Smart For This! This week's episode is with New York Times Bestselling Author Melody Beattie, who wrote the critically acclaimed CODEPENDENT NO MORE: How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself. Since its publication in 1986, the book has sold over 7 million copies and continues to help countless readers heal. For the first time, Beattie unflinchingly reveals her personal story. She also addresses trauma and anxiety in an all-new chapter—subjects she has long felt necessary to address within the context of codependency. She has broadened the lens to address a wide range of compulsive behaviors—making the book even more relevant today than it was when it first entered the national conversation over 35 years ago. Glennon Doyle, Jen Hatmaker, Brené Brown, Whitney Cummings, and many others have been vocal about the importance of CODEPENDENT NO MORE in their lives—and this new edition is poised to reach a new generation of readers. Melody Beattie's compassionate and insightful look into codependency—the concept of losing oneself in the name of helping another—has guided millions of readers toward the understanding that they are powerless to change anyone but themselves and that caring for the self is where healing begins. With personal reflections, exercises, and instructive stories drawn from Beattie's own life and the lives of those she's counseled, CODEPENDENT NO MORE helps you break old patterns and maintain healthy boundaries, and offers a clear and achievable path to healing, hope, freedom, and happiness. Note from Alexis: Welcome to our *new TSFT publishing day, THURSDAYS!! You all voted and this is where we are! Additionally, I accidentally say "finish up" this month's series in today's intro, but that's false - we're actually in the middle of it so we will absolutely have more fabulous Confidence episodes for you this month! CW: This episode contains discussions of eating disorders and fatphobia. Have you struggled with body and relationship confidence? So has Alexa Jay McCoy. In today's episode, she gives us the rundown of her personal history with an eating disorder, abusive ex-boyfriend, and anti-blackness that led her to feel awful in her own skin, and how she turned that around to become a thriving influencer and model. We discuss her most recent publicized run-in at The Highlight Room, the pressures of social media, and dealing with mental health issues as an influencer. Happy Monday Baddies! In the name of balance, this week we're bringing back a past episode with one of our favorite creators and founders, Madisen Dewey! As a content creator and consumer of social media, Madisen began to notice that the power of building community online was overpowered by the toxic traits of social media. Taking a leap of faith, Madisen quit her job at YouTube and began building Herd Social, an app that isn’t driven by metrics and helps users to discover communities that fit their interests. Throughout this episode, Madisen gets real about her experience as a woman in the tech startup space, what led her to taking Herd Social seriously, how Herd Social is starting the social media revolution, and so much more. Helen Phelan is a body neutral intuitive pilates instructor and founder of digital pilates and mindful fitness platform, Helen Phelan Studio. As an ex professional dancer and eating disorder survivor, Helen's approach to exercise is based on her lived experience that diet culture and the no excuses mindset keeps people stuck in a bad body image loop that makes them dread movement- despite its mood and energy boosting benefits.
She refined her methodology so that it could not only fit into her life in a non-harmful way post recovery, but to support others heal their relationships with movement and their own bodies + feel strong, empowered with intuitive exercise. She works with clients 1:1, in groups, workshops, and through her on demand platform to help people stop thinking of exercise as a way to burn off food and instead as a self-care tool to feel your best, both mentally and physically.
She's been featured in InStyle, HuffingtonPost, Well+Good, Coveteur, MindBodyGreen and when not on her mat, Helen is often found rewatching musicals, snuggling with her rescue pup, or hiking in the Catskills.

Hi loves! Todays’s episode is with astrologer Maxine Luzia, host of Astrology & You Podcast. She’s a professional astrologer who I became obsessed with after listening to her amazing podcast that she co-hosts with Alice Bell. Their podcast is such a gem of a resource for anyone who is getting into astrology, and after connecting with Maxine, I booked a reading with her where I got an in-depth understanding of my birth chart. We unpacked my Sagittarius stellium and my career purpose and I was able to see the biggest challenges I’ve had to overcome (internally & externally!) in a new light. In this episode, I talk about society’s love to appropriate Black women’s culture and aesthetics, but their failure to show up for Black female humanity - as represented through the lack of support for them in every industry, the high rate of deaths for Black Trans Women, and the abuse, neglect, and failure to support Black women in the medical field as well. Stereotypes like the “strong” and “angry” Black woman are what are keeping us from accepting Black women, and I tell stories of how that has changed my life and kept me from being my full self too.
In this episode, I speak with my friend Nya Jones, the creator of the Inside Then Out Journal, a 365 page journal with prompts for daily self reflection. We discuss her story with journaling, how she started and grew her business during a pandemic while working full time as a product specialist for Facebook, and the struggles we face as Black women working in Big Tech. In this episode, I talk about my history with dieting, and discuss how I’ve started coping with body image issues ever since giving up dieting in 2020.
In this episode, I speak with my IG friend and big inspiration, Sami Sage. We get into today’s politics and the future of the democratic party, diet culture, and the evolution of her company, Betches.
Kira West is a content creator and community cultivator who’s passion is making wellness inclusive. Kira is a proud Black woman with Caribbean roots born and raised in Brooklyn, NY.
Her journey into wellness began with an adventurous spirit and an insatiable desire to travel. Kira was determined to find all of the opportunities she could to experience the world. Her fearless spirit allowed her to travel the world, exploring 6 continents and over 40 countries, often solo. Kira’s love of travel influenced her desire to investigate ways to seek balance in her life and live most optimally. Her journey to seek and define balance was intertwined with Kira’s desire to define for herself the meaning of wellness. Her experience led her to focus on not only travel but fitness and running. These then became the elements that defined Kira’s idea of wellness.
Kira asked herself the question, what does a “well” life really look like. As she searched for these answers she found that it is truly different for everyone but it can include fitness, travel, varying forms of self-care, relationships, friendships and new experiences. Kira found that her personal definition of wellness included travel and fitness. Kira, upon defining these elements, also found that often Black and other underserved communities were not included in conversations surrounding wellness, travel or fitness. As Kira began to delve into the lack of diversity and inclusion within the wellness space, she became even more passionate about making wellness inclusive for all. She wants to empower people to seek their own definitions of wellness while also making the space more inclusive. She firmly believes wellness is a right for all and not an exclusive privilege for some.
Nora is a 24-year-old activist using her Instagram account to help white & non-Black POC be better allies. She works full-time as the Director of Growth + Admissions at Rivet School, a California-based nonprofit that helps Black and brown, low-income, first-generation working adults earn an accelerated and affordable college degree to unlock economic mobility.
In this episode, I talk about my frustration with large white influencers who refuse to "get political."
In this episode I talk to Kween Ali about recovering from eating disorder/disordered eating thoughts, comparing ourselves to others, and how she invented a delicious food product that's now sold in Whole Foods. Check out Kween & Co Granola Butter and follow Ali on instagram!
In this episode, we touch on what I learned in 2020 and how it's helping me set more intentional goals for 2021.
I talk to my friend Olivia from @SkinnyHangover about what it’s like to transition into balanced eating after diet culture’s restrictive mindset, launching her first Product (Happy & Healthy Planner linked in her Amazon store!) and how she grew on Instagram.
I brought in my very own dietitian @lisamnutrution to talk all things about healing your relationship with food while recovering from disordered eating. She gives tangible ways to do so without a dietitian, including working on overcoming body bias. Follow her on instagram @lisamnutrition, and if you want, you can work with her at NY Nutrition Group. She accepts a few major insurances!
In this episode, I talk to my friend Cameron Rogers of @freckledfoodie about her recent pregnancy announcement, her long term relationship with her husband, and what it means to get political on instagram. Check her out on Instagram @freckledfoodie!
Welcome to the first episode of Too Smart for This with me, Alexis Barber! We also talk about what to expect from this show in the future. Enjoy!
