Jeetaay is an informal phone-in, e-mail or text-in talk show where you contact the studio and chat with the presenter about anything and everything. However, for the next few months (as from January 2019), we will be giving a new twist to this show. For the next few months, Seereer Radio's presenters will be bringing up topics on Seereer Radio Presenters' WhatsApp group chat to be discussed each week by all our presenters and special guests.
Our presenters rotate each week and take the role of main presenter. The main presenter will then bring up topics to be discussed by his/her co-presenters. Discussions closes by 15:00 GMT every Wednesday. These audio messages are then edited and broadcast on Seereer Radio every Thursday night at 21:00 GMT. The entire show is by WhatsApp - 100%. There will be little editing prior to broadcasting on Seereer Radio because we want to keep the raw and authentic feel of a typical WhatsApp group chat. We are currently experimenting with some of our shows using WhatsApp. We are one of the first Senegambian radio stations (online or frequency) to use this format -100%. WhatsApp is one of the major messaging services used by most Senegambians. We will be utilising this format once a week for the next couple of months mixed with our usual live broadcast format.

A true protégé of the great Yandé Codou Sène, this lady can sing in several African languages and is a highly esteemed griot of "the old school." Some of the topics discussed include the history of Njuujuuf (in Tukaar); the Seereer kings of Siin and Saluum ("Maaad a Sinig" and "Maad a Saluum" respectively); the noble Joof family (or Diouf/Juuf family); the noble Faye family; Seereer history; Yandé's time at Sorano; the late Seereer diva Yandé Codou Sene; and Seereer music legends such as Mbaye Ndiaye, Simon Sene and Marie Ngoné Ndione. This Jeetaay Show was recorded from 28th February to 6th March 2019 and broadcast on Seereer Radio on Thursday, 8th March 2019 at 21:00 GMT. There was no Jeetaay show last week due to our coverage of Senegal's Presidential Elections. Our apologies.
The main presenter was Doudou Diouf. The content of this show was not planned. As you can hear at the beginning of this audio - right after Doudou Diouf's introduction, Mamadou Fall was congratulating President Macky Sall's APR supporters for winning the election. Following Mamadou Fall's audio, Tamsier Joof joined in and stated that as a broadcaster, he will remain neutral and will not congratulate any party. He then followed that audio by leaving a WhatsApp text in the group which reads:
"Having said that, none of the political parties addressed the Seereer issue. Something which concerns me greatly. In light of the fact that most of Senegal's revenue derives from agriculture, a sector dominated by the Seereer (the bread basket of Senegal), it concerns me that the Seereer are among the poorest in Senegal yet none of the political parties have policies in place to address this issue."
After that text message, Doudou Diouf jumped in an left an audio co-signing Tamsier's text message. He then went on to state that the Seereer nowadays do not support one another, do not care about their community and are only interested interested in supporting political parties or presidential candidates if it helps to fill up their own pockets. Following, Doudou's audio, Tamsier jumped in and co-signed Doudou's audio by leaving the following text message:
"The Seereer make up [the] political elite of Senegal yet their community is the poorest. I'm so done with this. You are right. How can anyone support a group who do not even support their own?"
This is how the show started - resulting in an intense debate among the panelists. During the course of the debate, one of the panelists took issue with a word used by another panelist which he thought was directed at him. As a result, he left the group and Tamsier had to call him privately and persuaded him to rejoin the group. You will hear all this drama unfold in this audio. After all that drama, there was an announcement that one of the regular panelists has a new baby girl. Can you guess which one?
After the recording of this show, Doudou Diouf (the supposed anchor of this week's show) had to record an introduction which you can hear in the beginning - broadcast in Seereer. This show was not planned.

Jeetaay is an informal phone-in, e-mail or text-in talk show where you contact the studio and chat with the presenter about anything and everything. However, for the next few months (as from January 2019), we will be giving a new twist to this show. For the next few months, Seereer Radio's presenters will be bringing up topics on Seereer Radio Presenters' WhatsApp group chat to be discussed each week by all our presenters and special guests.
Our presenters rotate each week and take the role of main presenter. The main presenter will then bring up topics to be discussed by his/her co-presenters. Discussions closes by 15:00 GMT every Wednesday. These audio messages are then edited and broadcast on Seereer Radio every Thursday night at 21:00 GMT. The entire show is by WhatsApp - 100%. There will be little editing prior to broadcasting on Seereer Radio because we want to keep the raw and authentic feel of a typical WhatsApp group chat. We are currently experimenting with some of our shows using WhatsApp. We are one of the first Senegambian radio stations (online or frequency) to use this format -100%. WhatsApp is one of the major messaging services used by most Senegambians. We will be utilising this format once a week for the next couple of months mixed with our usual live broadcast format.

On this show, Tamsier wanted to discuss the self-hatred of some African Muslims particularly in Senegal - who fake their genealogy by proclaiming to be descended from Arabs in order to get closer to the Islamic prophet Muhammad (what some scholars describe as Islamic legitimacy), and/or give false accounts about the origin of their surnames by claiming that their surnames are Arabic in origin despite it being African.

This Cosaan Seereer Show is a special tribute to our late colleague, uncle, granddad and mentor - Saltigi Biram Pouye (or Saltigi Biram Puuy) of Sanghe, Jooɓaas, Senegal -, who sadly passed away on Saturday, 2nd February 2019.
Saltigi Pouye was highly loved and respected by the Seereer Resource Centre and Seereer Radio teams. He had appeared on Seereer Radio on several occasions enlightening us with his wisdom. All his audio interviews can be found here. A video interview we did with him in 2015 can be found on our YouTube Channel. Professor Issa Laye Thiaw, also known as Mbañik Caw (his Seereer name, Thiaw is spelled Caw in Seereer) was a brilliant historian and author, and a very proud Seereer and African. A true guardian of Seereer tradition, religion, culture and ethics. He was a gifted and wise man who was always generous with his knowledge and time. The Seereer Community, the Senegambian community, and Africa have lost a great man.

Seereer Radio is 1 year old today. Although founded on 16th November 2015, it was officially launched on 5th January 2016. Obituary of Fatou Gueye Towards the end of this show, the celebratory mood changed when we found out that the legendary Fatou Gueye has passed away. Laity Sene, who was co-presenting this show was called during the live broadcast to be told that Fatou has passed away. Instead of telling his co-presenters, he handed over to his wife to join us on the broadcast as he went straight to the house of Fatou Gueye, but before leaving told his wife Hawa not to tell the Seereer Radio team until the end of the show so not to spoil celebratory mood. Hawa kept to her promise and didn't tell the co-presenters about the sad news until towards the end of the show. The passing of Fatou Gueye was broadcast live on Seereer Radio to everyone's shock and disbelief. With regret, this sad news was first broken on Seereer Radio. On Friday, 6th January 2017 at 14:24, the Seereer Resource Centre (SRC) and Seereer Radio issued a joint tribute on the sad passing of Fatou Gueye on their Facebook pages. which reads: "The Seereer Resource Centre and Seereer Radio are sad to announce the passing of the legendary Fatou Gueye, who sadly passed away yesterday. The sad news was broken live on Seereer Radio's first anniversary special programme last night. Fatou Gueye was a brilliant artist who worked diligently over the years to preserve and promote Seereer and Senegambian cultural heritage and identity. She was a highly talented artist with a long career especially within the Nguel. Only about a month ago, Seereer Radio's Cosaan Seereer team were planning to have her on the Cosaan Seereer Show, and arrangements were being made to accommodate that. The Seereer and Senegambian community have lost a great artist and a wonderful human being. The SRC and Seereer Radio teams would like to offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences to her family and friends. May her beautiful soul rest in perfect peace. Goliŋ." On this day, we were due to have the famous Senegalese drummer Omar Thiam on the show but had to cancel that interview when we found out that Omar Thiam's younger brother was one of those injured in the Friday, 14th October 2016 political march organised by the Senegalese Opposition. On Saturday, 4th June 2016 and Sunday, 5th June 2016, the Seereer Resource Centre (SRC) and Seereer Radio's Cosaan Seereer team (Tamsier Joof and Demba Sene) attended the annual Xoy ceremony at Centre MALANGO in Fatick, Senegal. The Xoy is an annual divination ceremony where the Seereer high priests gather once a year before the rainy season to divine the future - mainly about weather conditions, politics and social issues. It is an important festival in the Seereer religious calendar. This is part 2 of the coverage of the Xoy - first broadcast on the Cosaan Seereer show on Saturday, 25th June 2016. Internet connection in Gambia was poor hence why the Cosaan Seereer show was cancelled on 11th June 2016 whilst Tamsier was in the Gambia. Following his return back to London, part 1 was broadcast on 18th June. In this audio, the Seereer priestly class gathered to deliver their sermons and divine the future in Seereer. Ablie Bop of Walfadjri Radio translated in Wolof. The Xoy was a two day affair which lasted from 4th to 5th June 2016. If using a computer, the picture to the right is the Seereer star Yoonir (known as Seeseen in Saafi). On the second day of the festival, it was circled by the priestly class and delegations from various parts of Senegal where ritual offerings were made. As stated in this audio, the first part is a panel discussion held at Hotel Mindiss in Fatick attended by Dr. Erick Gbodossou (President of Prometra International (Senegal)), Amat Diop (President of CEMETRA), other members of the medical profession and the Senegalese media. The discussion was mainly about the effectiveness of traditional African medicine in curing illnesses. Some Seereer high priests (Saltigi) also provide traditional Seereer medicine. After the panel discussion, Tamsier, Demba and the panelists headed to MALANGO on that same night for the Xoy ceremony where the Seereer priestly class gather to deliver their sermons and divine the future in Seereer. 14th June 2016 : Judge's ruling on the 6 female demonstrators arrested on 9th May 2016 Gambia demonstration. This audio is not clear as it was recorded in secret highlighting Yahya Jammeh's regime and his mercenary judges. The audio is much longer than this but only a small segment can be used because of poor clarity. The case was held at Kannifing Court, Gambia. The hearing started at around 11am and lasted for just over two hours.

Lawyer Ousainou Darboe and his executive committee's hearing was held this afternoon at Banjul's High Court just after Nogoi Njie and co's hearing this morning. Information about Professor Maara Jon (née. Aliou Dione) : Professor Maara Jon (or Professor Mara Joon) is a linguist, historian, researcher and author. He graduated from the University of Cheick Anta Diop (French: Université Cheikh Anta Diop or UCAD) and since 1974 has been a prominent researcher and author of Seereer (particularly Saafi) history, culture and religion. Professor Jon also attended the Centre de Linguistique Appliquée de Dakar (CLAD) under the supervision of Professor Souleymane Faye, a professor of linguistics at UCAD and a member of the SRC team. Prior to his academic career, Professor Jon had success in acting. His name Maara derived from a film he was in where he played the role of a marabout. His real Seereer name is Jig Jam Jon.
Professor Jon has had several peer-reviewed papers under his name, and has authored, co-authored or contributed to several papers and books including assisting Professor David Maranz in his research on the Seereer-Saafi Raampa script (1992). Some of his work include : "Saafi, ɓoo fiisaat peɗmi ɓoo ɓap" (Saafi, lisons et écrivons notre langue maternelle), Société Internationale de Linguistique, BP 2075, Dakar, Sénégal, 2000 (réédité en 2004) (author: Rokhaya Seck, in collaboration with Aliou Dione, Carol Larsen and Jorunn Dijkstra)

The Seereer Resource Centre and Seereer Radio were proud sponsors of the Sene famly's Nguel (event) which took place on Saturday, 14th May 2016 at Dakar, Senegal. The Seereer artist Oussou Ndiol was due to play at the event. The president of the Sene Family Association was supposed to join the Cosaan Seereer team live on air to discuss the event scheduled that night but for some reason he was unable to attend and the interview was cancelled. However the Cosaan Seereer team did a great show and directed their questions to a fellow team member - Demba Sene who is also a member of the Association. On Wednesday, 20th April 2016, UK based Gambians turned out against Yahya Jammeh's 22 years regime amidst the recent killing of Ebrima Solo Sandeng (the UDP's National Organising Secretary) by Jammeh's forces, and Lawyer Ousainou Darboe's imprisonment along with several members of his United Democratic Party (UDP).
The demonstrators started at the Gambian Embassy near Nottinghill Gate Tube Station - located in one of the affluent areas of London before heading to Downing Street, official residence of the British Prime Minister. The turnout was less than expected despite a huge presence of Gambian nationals in London, but those who came to exercise their constitutional rights were united by a single purpose: to oust Yahya Jammeh from political power and put an end to what international human rights organisations describe as : a 22 year reign of terror, dictatorship, secret killings, kidnapping, torture and lack of democracy. Many of the people who actually showed up came from the North of England and the Midlands. Tamsier Joof, reporting for The Seereer Resource Centre and Seereer Radio joined the demonstrators and interviewed some of the attendees and organisers.

On Thursday, 14th April 2016, Ebrima Solo Sandeng (the UDP's National Organising Secretary) led a peaceful demonstration from Serekunda (Gambia) joint by several Gambian youths demanding electoral reform against Yahya Jammeh's regime. Jammeh's forces used unreasonable force to disperse the demonstrators, leading to unlawful imprisonment and several casualties. By Saturday, 16th April, it was confirmed that Ebrima Solo Sandeng died in detention. Other UDP members Fatoumata Jawara (Female Youth President), Fatou Camara, (Constituency Women’s Leader), Nokoi Njie (2nd Vice President of the Women’s Wing) and Lang Marong (Deputy Campaign Manager) were also among those arrested, and Fatoumata Jawara was reported to be suffering from severe injuries. Another female demonstrator by the name of Sabrina Mahtani was reported to be in a coma. Following this incident, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe's, leader of the main opposition party (the United Democratic Party (UDP)) gave a press conference from his home demanding the body of Ebrima Solo Sandeng and the immediate release of the prisoners. He then lead a demonstration joint by many members of the Gambian youth along with most of his executive committee including the Gambian statesman Femi Peters. They were arrested and imprisoned, and it was later reported that they were brutally tortured by Yayah Jammeh's forces whilst in detention. In this audio, Tamsier Joof's source who we shall call X agreed to be interviewed and go live on Mamadou Fall's show : Open Mike. X was one of the demonstrators and a supporter of the UDP.

Tamsier would like to know : what the Senegalese people have to say about this? should Senegal have accepted these two men? why didn’t the American government, the government which imprisoned them took them back and grant them right to remain in the U.S.? why weren’t they sent back to their country of origin – Libya? is it safe to have these two men running around in Senegal, considering the fact they were accused and imprisoned for acts of terrorism? is Senegal being used as a dumping ground by the U.S.? who is going to pay for these two men other than the Senegalese people through their taxes? The Senegalese government would have to find a home for them and feed them until they are able to get back on their feet. Information about Professor Maara Jon (née. Aliou Dione) : Professor Maara Jon (or Professor Mara Joon) is a linguist, historian, researcher and author. He graduated from the University of Cheick Anta Diop (French: Université Cheikh Anta Diop or UCAD) and since 1974 has been a prominent researcher and author of Seereer (particularly Saafi) history, culture and religion. Professor Jon also attended the Centre de Linguistique Appliquée de Dakar (CLAD) under the supervision of Professor Souleymane Faye, a professor of linguistics at UCAD and a member of the SRC team. Prior to his academic career, Professor Jon had success in acting. His name Maara derived from a film he was in where he played the role of a marabout. His real Seereer name is Jig Jam Jon. Professor Jon has had several peer-reviewed papers under his name, and has authored, co-authored or contributed to several papers and books including assisting Professor David Maranz in his research on the Seereer-Saafi Raampa script (1992). The Koffki was a sacred place of judgment and protection used by the Seereer, particularly the Saafi. It is a grove where libations were offered. It was, and is still headed by the Leemu matriclan. One of the powerful Saafi matriclans. Some ultra Seereer traditionalists believe that since some members of the Leemu matriclan have converted to Islam in recent times, especially the one leading this site, they should no longer head this Seereer sacred site. They believe that only those who adhere to the tenets of Seereer religion (a ƭat Roog) in its ultra-orthodox form should head this site, and the Leemu should pass it on to another family that follows the Ultra-Orthodox Seereer religious faith. They argue that the pouring of wine and invocation of Roog Seen or Kooh Seen (the Supreme Deity) were necessary parts of the ancient libation rituals. Since Islam forbids this and the man leading the site is estopped from doing so as a result of his newly found religion (Islam), he and his family (the Leemu clan) should be barred from leading this site. This team was headed by Tamsier Joof and Demba Sene. This is the interview they conducted with Wally Faye in Tukar (or Toucar), Siin, Senegal. Tukar was an ancient Seereer state with its own vassals founded by Laman Jeegaan Jaye Juuf (variations : Laman Djigan Diouf or Laman Jeegaan Joof). It is also a Seereer sacred place where the Raan festival is held once a year - on the second Thursday in April after the appearance of the new moon. During the Gelowar Maternal Dynasty (1350 - 1969), Tukar was incorporated into the Seereer precolonial Kingdom of Siin, however it retained great autonomy from the Seereer kings of Siin. For approximately 1000 years since its founding by Laman Jeegaan Jaye Juuf, the Juuf family have ruled Tukar and its vassals states as laman - title for the ancient Seereer kings and landowning class. Following Senegal's independence from France, Tukar is now another old and large Seereer village. When we met Mr. Faye he was enjoying his roasted groundnuts - hence some of the background noise. Apologies for the noise.
Information about Wally Faye : Wally Faye is in his 80's or 90's. He is literate and is regarded as one of the historians of the village. Some Senegalese journalists / researchers are reported to have visited him for interviews regarding the history of the area. He is a direct descendant of Fassamane Caw (the adventurer and contemporary of Jeegaan Jaye Juuf).
Note : There is a lot of controversy about this audio interview. Some of the views expressed here have not been backed up by scholarly papers and are contrary to the Seereer oral tradition. The head of the Juuf family of Tukar whose ancestor founded Tukar and who is responsible for the Raan festival attended a community meeting on the day of the interview, therefore we were unable to interview him and his family. Tamsier Joof, founder of the Seereer Resource Centre and Seereer Radio has been documenting Seereer and Senegambian history for the past few decades. This is the interview he conducted with his great uncle Alhaji Sulaye Nyang, great grandson of the Saluum historical figure - Wally Nyang. For the history of Wally Nyang see our interview with Alhaji Alieu Ebrima Cham Joof (aka : Cham Joof). This audio is in two parts. Part 1 relates to the genealogy / descendants of Wally Nyang - narrated by Alhaji Sulaye Nyang. The interviewer was Tamsier Joof. Part 2 relates to the history of Maad a Sinig Kumba Ndoofeen Famaak Juuf (king of Siin) and the surprise attack at Kerr Ngoor by the Muslim Marabout forces of Tafsir Maba Jaaxu Bâ and Lat Joor Ngoneh Latir Joop leading to the death of Bukary Ngoneh Juuf, and the ultimate Battle of Fandane-Thiouthioune more commonly known as the Battle of Somb (1867) in which the Seereers defeated the Muslim forces and was Maba killed. Information about the narrators: Alhaji Sulaye Nyang is the great grandson of Wally Nyang, the 19th-century historical figure of Saluum. The late Alhaji Dodou Nying Kuli Yandeh was a Seereer-Gambian griot and broadcaster. He was a regular on the Chossanie Senegambia [History of Senegambia] program between Radio Gambia and Radio Senegal which ran from 4th October 1973. He was known for playing the xalam during his narrations. The late Alhaji Sait Camara was also a notable Gambian oral historian and musician. He was also a xalam player. Information about the Joof family of Njongon : Njuma Joof and Mam Biram Joof are brothers, and Bure Joof is their paternal cousin. Njuma is the eldest, followed by Bure, then Mam Biram - the youngest. The family have been living in Njongon village since 1954, and this family are connected to the Joof family that founded many surrounding villages in the Niumi area including Njongon itself which was founded by another member of the Joof family. They are related to Alkali Ndiaga Joof who is the current alkali (village chief or mayor) of Njongon. Njaga Joof was not present during the interview but he was the one who initially introduced the SRC team to Mam Biram Joof and arranged the interview. Bure Joof did much of the talking. He is very knowledgeable about the history of the area and the history of the Seereer people of Niumi. As custom dictates, Mam Biram Joof did not speak much as his elder brother and cousin were present. The three gentlemen are Seereer Seex and speak the Seex language - i.e. Seereer-Siin. They also speak Wolof and English - Njuma and Mam Biram in particular.

Information about Professor Maara Jon (née. Aliou Dione) : Professor Maara Jon (or Professor Mara Joon) is a linguist, historian, researcher and author. He graduated from the University of Cheick Anta Diop (French: Université Cheikh Anta Diop or UCAD) and since 1974 has been a prominent researcher and author of Seereer (particularly Saafi) history, culture and religion. Professor Jon also attended the Centre de Linguistique Appliquée de Dakar (CLAD) under the supervision of Professor Souleymane Faye, a professor of linguistics at UCAD and a member of the SRC team. Prior to his academic career, Professor Jon had success in acting. His name Maara derived from a film he was in where he played the role of a marabout. His real Seereer name is Jig Jam Jon.
Professor Jon has had several peer-reviewed papers under his name, and has authored, co-authored or contributed to several papers and books including assisting Professor David Maranz in his research on the Seereer-Saafi Raampa script (1992). Information about Saltigi Biram Puuy : Saltigi Biram Puuy is one the last remnants of the old traditional Seereer priestly class. Saltigi (or Saltigue) is a Seereer religious title denoting a high priest or priestess. He was initiated into the secret order of the Seereer priestly class and adhere to the tenets of Seereer religion, both of which are fundamental for one to be deemed a "true saligi". Saltigi Puuy comes from a long line of Seereer priests. He is well versed in Seereer religious doctrines, history, traditional medicine, secrets of ndut classical teachings which includes the cosmos and the paranomal. Saltigi Puuy rarely give interviews, preferring to focus more of his time on Seereer history and culture than the usual role associated with the Seereer priestly class (saltigi).

Information about Saltigi Biram Puuy : Saltigi Biram Puuy is one the last remnants of the old traditional Seereer priestly class. Saltigi (or Saltigue) is a Seereer religious title denoting a high priest or priestess. He was initiated into the secret order of the Seereer priestly class and adhere to the tenets of Seereer religion, both of which are fundamental for one to be deemed a "true saligi". Saltigi Puuy comes from a long line of Seereer priests. He is well versed in Seereer religious doctrines, history, traditional medicine, secrets of ndut classical teachings which includes the cosmos and the paranomal. Saltigi Puuy rarely give interviews, preferring to focus more of his time on Seereer history and culture than the usual role associated with the Seereer priestly class (saltigi).

In this audio, El Hadji Demba Lamine Diouf of Senegal narrates the history of Senegambia. He touches on the meaning of the word Damel and Tëën (variations: teeñ, tégne, teen or teign). Demba Lamine also discusses the founding of several old villages and towns in the Senegambia region including Lambaye. The Battle of Danki (1549) is also discussed in this audio along with the enthronement of Amari Ngoneh Sobel Faal (king of Cayor and Bawol) and Maad a Saluum Mbegaan Nduur (or Mbegane Ndour) - King of Saluum, who reigned in 1494.

Part 1. The late Gambian historian Doctor Lamin Mbye narrates the history of Banjul. Doctor Mbye touches on the meaning of the name Banjul; the families from Goreé and Sierra Leone brought into The Gambia by the colonial authorities to build Banjul (many of whom were from the Aku ethnic group) after they purchased land from the King of Kombo. In this audio, Doctor Mbye supports his narrations by citing written sources (primary and secondary sources) as well as the oral tradition. Some of the notable people mentioned in this audio include Reverend J.C Faye and the 19th-century Gambian merchant Pompey Gaye.

Information about Doctor Lamin Mbye (also known as Professor Lamin Mbye) : Doctor Lamin Mbye was a Professor of History and Social Sciences at the University of Maryland at Eastern Shore (UMES). His area of interest was African history. He worked for institution from 1986 to 2004. His father descended from the Mbye family of Cayor and Walo, and his mother descended from the Jange family of Saluum – one of the Seereer precolonial kingdoms. After graduating from high school in the late fifties, he worked for the government in colonial Gambia and later managed to secure a scholarship to study in the United Kingdom. He obtained his first degree from the University of Wales and doctoral degree from Birmingham University in England. "Upon his return to the Gambia in 1969, the Civil Service Commission appointed him as the head of the Information Department where he supervised many of the young Gambians working as journalists in the Gambia News Bulletin and as broadcasters in the newly created Radio Gambia." He is a paternal descendant of the renowned 19th century Senegambian griot - Sainey Mbissine Njaay Samba who was well known among the circles of early to mid 19th century Senegambian kings. He particularly gained prominence during the reign of Maad Saluum Balleh Horeja Ndaw (reigned: 1823 to 1857). Jebal Samba's grandfather (Sainey Ata Samba) was the official griot of Mama Tamba Jammeh, chief of Yilliyassa. Mama Tamba was a Seereer chief whose descendants can be found in the Gambia. This branch of the Samba family were Seereers of Kahone - the precolonial capital of the Seereer kingdom of Saluum. They are one of those we historically refer to as "Saluum-Saluum", a term denoting the "inhabitants of Saluum."
