It is normal for human bodies to be a little bit different, from the shape of our bones, to how tall we are, to how flexible we are. We can work to improve our strength, flexibility, and coordination doing Pilates, but we are all starting at different points, and we do have some structural limitations that are unique to us. That doesn't mean we need to give up on our pursuit of attaining a difficult Pilates exercise, but we can give ourselves grace and and recognize that our body's version of the exercise may not look exactly like someone else's. And that's okay!

Joseph Pilates created a wonderful system of movement and exercise that continues to inspire students and teachers alike. While parts of his program are truly visionary, several of his beliefs have not turned out to be true. Today I look at Joseph Pilates' books Your Health (1934) and Return to Life through Contrology (1945) and examine his theories on movement and wellness.

Mary Thorton is a British physiotherapist and founder of The Clinical Pilates Studio in England. You can learn more about her and her studio here: https://clinicalpilatesstudio.squarespace.com/our-team

The article I mentioned came out in 2017, so it was a big deal when I heard about it in 2018. It's still very new. You can check it out here: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/ajmg.c.31552

The Beighton Test is super not useful to measure hypermobility because those 9 points I talk about don't get into the hypermobility that could happen in one's heart, intestines, bladder, blood vessels, eyes, etc. It's a very limited and outdated test that doesn't cover much of the spectrum of Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder.

Carla is a Pilates student, teacher, and the founder of Posture Studio in Charlottesville, Virginia in the US. She shares the ways that Pilates helped her heal from a serious injury through re-learning movement patterns and breaking free of pain patterns. Her story of Pilates as a form of corrective and rehabilitative exercise is honest, relatable, and inspiring.

Follow the podcast on Instagram @pilatesstudentsmanual and on the web here: https://bit.ly/PilatesStudentsManual for the latest!

Email pilatesstudentsmanual@oliviabioni.com with your feedback.

Show Notes:

Carla found rehabilitative Pilates in 1998 while recovering from injuries that did not improve after years of traditional physical therapy approaches. She spent the following years in a long, involved training to learn how to teach movement retraining to others. In 2002, she became a certified Pilates instructor through The Physical Mind Institute and has also studied the STOTT PILATES method extensively. She studied and worked at The Albemarle Center for Health & Rehabilitation and found that years of working with an injured population taught her the art of seeing structural imbalances clearly. She opened Posture Studio to keep others from developing chronic pain in their own lives.

Whether it's your first time in the studio ever or you're a long-time studio member, here are to tips to help you be considerate and be prepared for your class. From last minute cancellations to what to wear, this episode has you covered!

Follow the podcast on Instagram @pilatesstudentsmanual and on the web here: https://bit.ly/PilatesStudentsManual for the latest!

Email pilatesstudentsmanual@oliviabioni.com with your feedback.

Notes:Calling the studio is really only necessary for last minute cancellations for group classes. You should give your teacher as much notice as possible for private session cancellations.

When a teacher cues to do what feels right in your body, it usually means that you can work in a smaller range of movement, or try a modification. It isn't a cue for exploring advanced progressions.

Notes:Check out Pilates Anatomy by Rael Isacowitz and Karen Clippinger here: https://bit.ly/RaelPilatesAnatomy

I misspoke in this episode. I defined ASIS as anterior superior illiac crest, when it is actually the anterior superior iliac spine, which fits the acronym. I was clearly very excited about the core.

Where did Pilates come from? Olivia takes a deep dive into the history of Pilates, sharing some stories and myths about Joseph Pilates, the history of Pilates in the United States, and why it matters. If you love Pilates history, you can also check out the companion episode from the teacher perspective on Pilates Teachers' Manual here: http://bit.ly/pilatesteachersmanual

Some resources that Olivia used to create this episode are:

Clara's Obituary in the NY Times: https://bit.ly/ClaraObit

Joe's obituary was also in the NY Times, but I could only find an image of it on Pinterest....He was listed as a body builder, and "a white-maned lion of a man, with steel-blue eyes and mahogany skin, Mr Pilates kept as limber in his 80s as a teenager." https://bit.ly/JoeObit

There is a biography of Joseph Pilates that just came out, but it's only in German. I can't wait for the English translation!
