On Friday March 13, 2020, students and teachers left the classroom for what many of us believed would be a short period of virtual learning. Now, just over a year later, the field of education has changed drastically. It's been a year. The reality is that this past year has shined light on a lot of problems in our education system. This past year has brought us new problems. This past year has exacerbated existing ones. And this past year has prompted people outside the profession to take interest in (arguably) more ways than ever before. In today's episode, I am sharing my top edtech lessons of distance learning. More specifically, I am sharing the tools and the edtech tips that I hope we will continue to utilize even when we are all back in the classroom, in-person and without social distancing measures in place. Naomi Meredith is a former classroom teacher turned current K-5 STEM teacher. After being in the elementary classroom for 6 years and falling in love with technology and STEM with her own students, she wanted an extra challenge. Without any technical degree, she studied, trained, and read all about innovation. This helped her land a position teaching K-5 STEM. She teaches STEM in the specials rotation, while also having the opportunity to co-teach with teachers in her building. While currently working on her Master’s in STEM Leadership, she believes that anyone can teach STEM, no matter what their classroom setting is.

Episode 26: PBL in Early Childhood with Sara Lev, TK Teacher and PBLWorks National Faculty

Today's episode of the EdTech Classroom Podcast is with Sara Lev, Transitional Kindergarten Teacher and National Faculty for PBLWorks.

You might notice something different about the intro of today's episode. I don't normally have kids running the show. I also don't normally have a theme song quite as catchy as the one you'll hear today. Today's episode of the EdTech Classroom Podcast is with Sara Lev. You'll hear from Sara's students too, who created their own podcast. Sara shows us that it truly is possible to have high-quality project-based learning with students of all ages, even our youngest learners. She also dispels some myths about PBL in early childhood along the way.

Welcome to the first episode of the EdTech Classroom podcast. Today I share my Summer 2020 Book List for Teachers.I created this book list a few weeks ago to help teachers stay inspired and motivated this summer. This list was curated with distance learning and coronavirus in mind. Recent events, including the murder of George Floyd, have reminded us of the importance to educate ourselves around racism in the U.S. For this reason, I’d like to specifically highlight book number six on my list, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindedness by Michelle Alexander.

Innovative teaching is about educating the future leaders of tomorrow. I hope that all of the books on this list will inspire you to make meaningful changes to your teaching practice.

For links to purchase these books, you can check out my blog: https://edtech-class.com/2020/05/31/summer-2020-book-list-for-teachers/

If you would like to discuss any of the books on this list or education in general, please email me at myedtechclassroom@gmail.com
