Worship music has been at the center of controversy in the Church for at least a few decades. Whether you go into a service that resembles a rock concert or one that feels like you’ve stepped back in time 100 years, the style and sound are not really what matters. If you don’t think you can worship through one or the other, the actual music may have become an idol, and your heart is in the wrong place. As Pastor Mark reminds us in today’s message, worship, whether through a chorus written last week or a hymn penned a century or two ago, should be focused on bringing God glory and opening your heart up to His Spirit.
If you’re like most Christians, you might reach a genealogy or a list of people in Scripture, and quickly scan through it with little regard for its value. Sure, it may not be heart-warming or uplifting on the surface, but Pastor Mark challenges us in today’s message to look a little deeper and think about why those names are there. When you read the name of a loved one – of someone important to you – what do you feel? It likely revives memories and feelings that you shared with that specific person. In the same way, each person listed in Scripture is significant to God and gives us a snapshot of His work in their story.
Christ is often misinterpreted as being a pacifist. While He did encourage us to respond to personal attacks, such as a slap on the cheek, in a way that demonstrates grace and love to our attacker, He was not a proponent of passively standing by in the face of injustice or abuse. You need to stand up for the oppressed. As Pastor Mark challenges us in today’s message, especially when it comes to spiritual warfare, you can’t shy away from the battle. You need to run to the battle dressed in the armor of God. His truth and love are your greatest weapons to vanquish the enemy that seeks to destroy all of mankind.
God designed the Church as a body for a reason. Every part serves a purpose and helps the other parts. Yes, a body can continue living even when it loses one part, but the absence of it can severely lessen the quality of life. As Pastor Mark continues our study of the book of Nehemiah in today’s message, he reminds you of the importance of surrounding yourself with Christian friends and taking advantage of their help. You have to be intentional about reaching out and allowing them to help pull you through your struggles and temptations; and make sure you are there when they need the same from you.
The Bible is like a magnifying glass that points out sins you otherwise wouldn’t see. Unlike sin, which deceives and lies to you, the Word shows you the true condition of your heart. Sin causes you to compare yourself to others and elevate yourself above them, as you’ll hear from Pastor Mark today. Nobody likes to see themselves as a sinner in need of help, but God has given the amazing gift of repentance. He’s always ready to forgive when your sin is exposed. The closer you get to God, the more you’ll become aware of your sin and want to daily confess it. Because a true life of freedom is found in forgiveness.
Is your response to God’s Word one of arrogance and pride, or one of humility and repentance? You can learn a lot from the Israelites’ reaction to the reading of the law from Pastor Mark’s teaching today. They immediately humbled themselves with fasting, putting on sackcloth and dirt, and confessed their sins. They saw their frailty and sinfulness in light of an awesome God. Just as the Israelites, you’re prone to sin, but thank God He’s rich in mercy. Ongoing repentance should mark your life as a believer. This motivates the daily perspective of your utter dependence on God in light of His glory, but also His grace.
The Word of God must be taught for it to be understood and understanding reveals what has already been there the whole time. God will use different circumstances and situations at certain times in your life to illuminate the meaning of Scripture right when you need it. This is why it’s key, as Pastor Mark points out today, to make sure the teaching you’re getting from the Word leaves you understanding God better, not a person. This process will involve correction and reproof which aren’t pleasant. But your humble response and teachable heart are essential for change, growth and deep, abiding joy.
Take an inventory of how you spend your time each day. This will reveal much about where your priorities lie. Is study of God’s Word high on your list or does it get beat out by social media, television, or hobbies? Today Pastor Mark teaches a strong emphasis on God’s Word is a primary mark of spiritual renewal. You don’t desire God’s Word unless the Spirit is moving and working in you. If you want to see change in your life, you must be willing to let the Bible do the hard work on your heart. Foster an attentive and reverent attitude as you read Scripture and you’ll find the Spirit causing you to hunger for more.
Countless families, marriages, and lives have been destroyed because of complacency. When a couple lets their guard down and allows sin and selfishness to grow in their marriage, it will eat away at their foundation, and they’ll easily crumble when a strong enough storm comes through. The same can happen when parents aren’t on alert for the ways that Satan is actively infiltrating their family. As Pastor Mark warns us in today’s message, you must always be on guard against our enemy. You need to be actively seeking Jesus on a daily basis and imploring the Holy Spirit to strengthen you in your weakness.
God’s creation is beautiful. Whether you’re walking through an arid desert, along the thundering ocean, through a temperate forest or in a vast mountain landscape, you can look around and just be struck speechless by the splendor of it all. As Pastor Mark explains in today’s message, as amazing as this place is, it is flawed and broken. Because of man’s sin, all of creation longs for redemption. The good news is that one day, we will be restored and made whole, and we’ll stand before God. In that moment we will see Him clearly and our praise will be completely unbridled as we encounter His glory in all of its fullness.
It can be very frustrating to be falsely accused of something. Whether someone claims you did something you shouldn’t have or they say you didn’t do something you were supposed to, you can waste a lot of breath trying to argue your case. As Pastor Mark explains in today’s message, there’s no point in exhausting your energy in this way. It may take days, years or maybe even the hindsight of eternity before your honor is restored, but, as long as you are honest before God and see the job through to completion, you have no reason to be ashamed. God knows your heart and the opinion of man doesn’t matter.
There’s a phrase that says, “if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Unfortunately, not everyone can find a job that they love, but as believers, this concept can apply as well. As Pastor Mark points out in today’s message, often times believers serve in their church out of a sense of obligation. They may have good intentions, but before long, instead of finding fulfillment in serving Christ, they find themselves burned out and in need of a break. This shouldn’t be your approach to serving. Service should be done out of gratitude and a desire to serve the God who gave up so much to bring you into His family.
Any loving relationship is going to have confrontation. You might hear that word and cringe, but it doesn’t have to be a negative thing. If you approach a loved one out of anger and frustration over how their decisions are affecting you, you will likely find your words falling on deaf ears. But, as Pastor Mark explains in today’s message, when you approach that same issue out of love and concern for that person, while they still may not take it well, you are approaching them with a Christ-like love and have a much better chance of making a difference. This kind of confrontation is necessary for growth within the Church.
One of the most distinctive characteristics of the Church is supposed to be the love and unity between its members. Our purpose as a body is to glorify God and carry His Gospel to the world around us, but when we allow division to arise amongst us, the work God has called us to will stop. As Pastor Mark warns in today’s message, you have to be on constant alert against our cunning enemy. He easily comes in and infiltrates our ranks, bringing controversy and conflict where there should be none. As you walk in Christ, make sure that you are a proponent of unity and love with your fellow believers.
Have you told God He can have everything, yet you’re still trying to hold a few cards under the table? Still clinging to certain belongings, bank accounts or backup plans just in case God’s way isn’t working out for you? It’s a common misconception that the more stuff you have, or the larger the number on your bank statement, the more peace you’ll have. But, as Pastor Mark explains in today’s message, those things are fleeting and can disappear in a moment. When you let go of that stuff, and fully surrender everything to God, you’ll find a deep, eternal peace that surpasses anything this world can provide.
In our wealthy culture, it’s easy to forget the difference between luxury and necessity. You get so accustomed to the conveniences and comforts, that when you’re forced to ration or downsize your living, you feel like you’re really suffering, despite the fact that you still have more than the vast majority of people in our world. As Pastor Mark continues to lead us through Nehemiah in today’s message, he challenges us to learn what it means to depend on God for your fulfillment. Don’t look to the luxuries of life for contentment. God will provide for your needs, and you can find complete joy in Jesus Christ alone.
Today Pastor Mark shares practical advice that can be gleaned from the story of the Jews rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem. Walls are built to keep out enemies, and as a Christian, you have a genuine enemy in the devil. When you create a barrier to keep the devil out there are three things to remember. First, a foundation of prayer followed by the study of God's word. Second, present your requests before your heavenly father. Fill your mind with the truths of who He is from His Word. Third, finish with building walls, or protecting, your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Lead by example, so those around you are not discouraged.
Are you living with one foot in this world and the other following Jesus? The Bible says that even though we live in the world, we shouldn't live according to the world. It's easy to become desensitised to our cultures trends, but this is not what Christ would have for you. He wants your whole heart. In Pastor Mark's message today, he speaks about how living according to the world's standards doesn't create a threat for the devil. When you live a purposeful life for Jesus and use his love to change other peoples lives, you become a threat to the enemy. This is when you may fight against opposition from the devil because now you've become a threat.
Do you lay down your life, for the advancement of the Gospel? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he reminds you that you are Christ's light in this dark world. You need to remember, that you are saved to be a light and a witness to those around you. Just as Christ was called to deny Himself, you are also to deny yourself and serve Him. Your life is to be about the Lord, rather than chasing your own agenda. God has specifically blessed you to be a blessing. Lead by example, and don't just experience God's presence and grace for yourself, but share it with the world. Advance the Kingdom, by sharing the Good News of Christ!
Do you deny yourself, for the better of the whole? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches you to not let pride get in the way, of denying yourself. In the culture that surrounds you, it's easy to not want to deny yourself. You're taught to not let anyone walk over you or hold you down. However, Jesus exampled a way much different. As a Christian, you are to live in this world, but not be of it. There will be times in your life, where for the betterment of the whole, you will have to deny yourself. To deny yourself, is to show others the love of Christ in you. By Christ's example, humbly deny yourself and serve others in love.
How do you serve God realistically? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches you that there are three things you need to learn, to serve God realistically. You need to learn how to wait on Him, how to work with people, and how to deal with problems that come your way. When you serve the Lord, you will face many problems. The enemy will throw all sorts of problems your way, and it's important that you are able to face them. When you learn to wait on the Lord to direct you within your problems, and are able to work well with those around you, you will be able to handle the problems that come your way with love and grace.
Are you planning, while you are praying? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches you the importance of both praying and planning. Many Christians think it is unspiritual to plan, because they think that if they plan, they are not trusting in the Lord. However, God desires that we both plan and pray. You need to seek God's will in everything, but also ask Him how to go about what it is you are seeking. Try to plan how you think the Lord is leading you, and then bring it to Him in prayer. Don't be afraid to wait for His timing. When you wait for Him, He will give you the peace that you need, to move forward with His plans for your life.
If you are serving the Lord without any sacrifice on your part, you are missing an important part of worship. In his message today, Pastor Mark encourages you to seek the Lord and ask if there is an area of your life that could be better spent serving Him. You might be spending a lot of time in a certain area that God didn't call you to, and He is asking you to worship Him by giving it up. If you try and sacrifice something that doesn't cost you anything, then it is not a true sacrifice. Sacrifices will always cost you something initially, but the pay off will be a richer and fuller relationship with the Lord.
One of the ways God works through a believer's life is by allowing Satan to challenge them. As Pastor Mark explains, God doesn't do this because He is unsure of the outcome; He does this as a way to further the purification of a believer. God is sovereign; He knows the beginning, middle and end of your life. But sometimes you need a little nudge or a challenge to grow your faith in God. Even when Satan is allowed in your life, God is in control. Today, you'll look at the life of King David and Job and see that even though Satan brought destruction to their life, they both continued to worship God.
King David's mighty men were there to serve their king at any cost. When King David makes a passing comment that he would like some spring water, the mighty men jump into action and get what their King wants. In his message today, Pastor Mark asks if you are willing to sacrifice for your King. Do you even know what God longs for and wants? It's easy to see the heart of Jesus; you only need to open his fathers' word, the Bible. Once you learn what your Father wants, are you willing to make the sacrifice like King David's mighty men? Use today as a starting point to seek after God's heart and fulfill His commandments.
here are a lot of little things that you can do to positively impact an individual's daily life. You can smile at a stranger, call a friend and give a word of encouragement, or even return the shopping cart to the store. What stops you from making these small gestures throughout your day? In Pastor Mark's message today, he will encourage you to get with God to make it happen. The Lord is the one who will give you strength daily to do small acts that can seem mighty to other people. You will be encouraged to go to God often for strength. Even as you finish one task, ask Him again and ask for wisdom regarding your next move.
Do you take refuge and find strength in the Lord? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches that when you are in the midst of a problem, God is willing and able to help you. You don't need to figure a way out of your problem by yourself. God will give you a way out, if you turn to Him and ask. Often times when we are in the thick of our trials, we can forget that we have a God who loves and cares for us. Remember that God is for you in the midst of your trials. Turn to Him in prayer, and ask that He would help you to find a way out, and that He would be your source of strength. He is faithful to help you, in your times of need!
What are the topics of your conversation? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches that there is a weight, witness, and worth to the things you talk about. If you think about it, you can learn a lot about others, by listening to what comes out of their mouths. Based off of the words people speak, you can begin to understand what drives them. Consider the topics you talk about, and evaluate whether or not they are kingdom driven. We want our speech to be declaring the goodness of the Lord, and what He had done within our lives. Do your words show this? Be mindful of your words, because they carry a lot of weight.
God is your support! In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches that God is a God, who helps you. When you receive the Lord as your Savior, you are no longer fighting your battles by yourself. God is now with you, helping you to defeat the giants within your life. Unbelievers, are constantly striving to do everything on their own. However, those who have Christ, always have a helper who will support them. You never have to feel like you are alone, when you have Christ. He is always there to help you in your time of need. When you are pursuing God's will, He is there to help you accomplish it. You are not alone!
Did you know there are many ways in which God can speak to you? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches that one of the ways God can speak to you, is through His creation. God uses nature, to speak to you about who He is. God can speak to you through a beautiful sunrise or sunset. God can use any of His creation, to get your attention and lead you into praising Him. God knows exactly how He made you to be, and will speak to you in these specific ways. Take time to think to yourself, the ways in which God speaks to you personally. Thank Him for speaking to you, and praise Him when you hear Him speak!
As you get older, continue to shine your light in this world! In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches the importance of elders, and the wisdom that they offer. We never out grow serving the Lord. No matter how old you get, you can still be used by God, to shine His light into this dark world. There are younger people that need your wisdom, words of encouragement, prayers, and the gifts the Holy Spirit has given to you. You might not be able to be as active as you once were, but you still carry God's presence. See who you can come alongside to mentor and disciple, for God's glory, and His radiance.
Are you going to stand for the things of the Lord, or are you going to stay in the boat? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches that it is important to stand for God's Word and His will. Sometimes it can be easy to want to stay in the boat, where it is safe and comfortable. However, God desires for you to step out of the boat, and to step out of your comfort zone. Fear of offending others, or “rocking the boat,” is not worth missing the potential opportunity, for you to reach someone with God's love and truth. Don't be afraid to share the Lord and His truth, with others. He is with you, and He will give you everything you need!
Can you be like Jesus, and forgive the people who have rejected you? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches you to love those who have rejected you, by offering them forgiveness. When you have been rejected and hurt, it's easy to want to rebel and turn aside from those who have rejected you. However, Jesus knows exactly what it's like to be rejected. He was turned away from the very people, that called themselves His chosen people. Jesus could have easily turned away and rebelled from God's call to the cross, but He chose to lay His life down for you. Forgiveness is not easy, but with the Spirit's help you can extend it!
What is causing pain in your life? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches that whenever you experience rejection, it allows space for you to stop and take inventory of your life. There are things that are helpful and needed within your life, and things that are not. For David in the book of 2nd Samuel, he had unhealthy attraction towards women. David needed to set aside the pursuit of women in his life, in order for him to walk closer with the Lord. When you grow spiritually, you will start to recognize the things that are drawing you away from the Lord. Set aside whatever it is, that is stunting your growth with the Lord.
There are a lot of comfortable people in the church! In today's message from Pastor Mark, he encourages you to get involved within your church. Often times, there is a good majority of the same people, that volunteer to help meet the churches needs. Typically the same people that came to help set up for an event, are the same group of people, that are helping to tear down. When this happens, it's easy for those people to start to feel worn out. The church is to be a body of believers. Which means in order for the church to function well, it needs all of its parts contributing, to help keep it healthy. Be active in your home church!
We all want to claim the precious promises of God, but do we want to be conformed to His image? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches you that being conformed to the image of God, comes through seasons of suffering. Christ had to endure hardship, and so will anyone who claims His name. When you go through seasons of suffering and trial, remember that God uses these times to transform you, to look more like Him. God uses the mountains you have to climb and the walls you run into, and transforms them for your good and His glory. He can use theses hard seasons, to grow and strengthen you spiritually.
Forgiveness comes easier when you remember the times in your past, when you were forgiven! In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches you to forgive others. Every person on this earth, has fallen short of the glory of the Lord. Forgiveness is not always easy, but you are called by God, to extend it. All of us have had times where we have worn our emotions on our sleeves, and we've said hurtful things that we shouldn't have. When you recognize that someone has come to you to be reconciled, extend to them the forgiveness you too have received. Always try to extend forgiveness, love, and grace to others.
Emotions are contagious! In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches the importance of guarding your emotions. Emotions, have the ability to rub off on others. Guarding your emotions, especially for leaders, is very important. When you are in a role of leadership, you can't storm around wanting people to feel sorry for you. You are to lead others by example, in showing them what it looks like to control their emotions. People look to leadership, to help them know what is and is not acceptable. As a leader, you can't defend your rights to lash out. You are called to pick up your cross daily, deny yourself, and follow the Lord!
God gives you the time you need, to prepare you for what He has! In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches you that God's reasons are always better than your excuses. God will reason with you through His Word, to get you prepared for where He wants you to go. He might be calling you into a specific area of ministry that you feel ill-equipped for. However, when you come to Him with excuses, He will show you through His Word, that He has the power to overcome your excuses. His power through His Spirit in you, is stronger than any excuses that come against you. Trust that His reasons for you, are better than your excuses!
As a Christian, are you willing to persevere until the end? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches you to be like David's men, and persevere until the end for Christ. To be a servant for Christ, means that sometimes you will have to endure hardship and persecution. However, the pain and trials you may have to endure, will be nothing in comparison to the glory and joy, that will come to you in the Lord. To follow the Lord whole heartedly, always carries a cost. However, that cost far outweighs any potential suffering. Keep pursuing the Lord and sharing Him with the world. Persevere and finish your race well!
What does good counsel look like? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches you that good counsel can look very different, in any given circumstances. Good counsel, is not always going to be something that looks particularly “good.” Sometimes good counsel, like in David's case, is to flee. David in 2nd Samuel, had to pack up all of his belongings and leave. Leaving was not easy for David, and there might be a time where you have to flee. Good counsel is not always easy. Good counsel can be hard, uncomfortable, and not necessarily joyful. However, that doesn't mean it's not the best advice for your situation.
The time of Christ's return, is near! In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches you to be urgent in spreading the Good News. Often times it can feel uncomfortable to open up and share with others. However, as Christians, it's important that we do. You can't keep the Good News of the Lord to yourself. Someone in your life, decided to open up and share with you, and it's important that you do the same. You can't sit and wait on it. There is an urgency to the Gospel, because Christ's return is very near. Don't wait for the right feeling to come about, in order to be able to share. Share the Good News with someone today!
Who can counsel the Lord? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches that God alone knows what is ultimately best for you. Therefore, it's important that you are in His Word daily and spending time in His presence. Speak to the Lord in prayer and ask Him what you should do. Often times, people want to come to the Lord with their own ideas about what God should do for them. However, they need to be asking Him, what actions they should take. God doesn't need your counsel, you need His. He desires that you know Him intimately, and seek Him in all things. Rest assured that no matter what, He desires good for you!
Don't be a false flatterer! In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches you that false-flattery is destructive. False-flattery, is telling someone what you think they might want to hear, just so you can look good in their eyes. Those who speak false-flattery, are often trying to promote themselves, and are seeking after their own selfish gain. If you are a Christian and are speaking false-flattery, you are saying that you believe more in your lies and tricks to get you where you need to go, versus trusting in the Lord. Be sure to remember, that it is God alone who provides a path for success. All promotions, blessings, and gifting come from Him!
The Enemy is subtle and strategic! In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches that Satan studies and looks for your weaknesses. Satan likes to attack you when you are down, vulnerable, and discouraged. He is patient in waiting for the most opportune time, to attack and tempt you toward sin. You must always be on your guard against him, and be sure to be in the Word daily. Satan desires for you to react and respond how the world would react, which is from the flesh. Never forget that you have the Spirit of God inside of you. When you feel down, ask the Lord to help strengthen and equip you for the battle!
God is faithful to His Word! In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches you that God is faithful to His Word, in good times and in bad times. There will be times in your life, where you will need to be disciplined from the Lord. Discipline from God is a good thing, because He disciplines those whom He loves. Often times, it's easy to like God's faithfulness to His Word, when there are promises of abundance and good things. However, God's faithfulness to His Word when it comes to discipline, is just as beneficial. God loves you, and is faithful to keep His Word to bless you, but to also refine you to look more like Him!
Do you pray for God to give you the eyes to see, like how He sees? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he teaches you about intercessory prayer. Intercessory prayer, is standing in the gap for others. Jesus is your intercessor, and He prays for you! Jesus holds the hand of God, holds the hand of man, and bridges the gap for His people. God desires that we model after Him, and do the same for others. You need to be praying, that God would help you to see who you can intercede for, and lift up to Him in prayer. So many people are fighting hidden battles, and desperately need your prayers. Who can you stand in the gap for?
In life, things don't always go as planned. You can try to do everything right and still people will betray you, life will fall apart, and you'll likely stumble and have to reap the consequences of your sin. This isn't meant to discourage you – on the other hand, Pastor Mark intends to encourage you with a truth that will never change. God is for you, and He is working your steps out well in advance! He knows where you've been, and He still wants to use you to do great things for the Kingdom! You don't need to strive to defend yourself to a world that just doesn't understand. Instead, let go and let God work it all out in His perfect timing!
Your life is influenced by those you spend the most time with, whether you're aware of it or not. Today, Pastor Mark has a challenge for you in this area – will you take a close and careful look at what those people are sharing in your life? Take some time to think today about what your friends are encouraging. Is it bitterness and resentment, or are they pushing you closer to Jesus? It might be time to make some changes to who's speaking into your life! You too can be this type of influence in your friends lives! Show them Jesus through what you say and do, and always let Him guide your interactions with others!
Who are you becoming like? In today's message from Pastor Mark, he encourages you to ask yourself some hard questions. You learn from this message that David's followers, were loyal to him. Are you loyal to God? Are the people you surround yourself with, loyal to God? Are you grumbling and complaining all the time, or are you praising and thanking? Are you becoming bitter or better? The answers to these questions, will help give you insight as to what is going on within the internals and externals of your life. God desires for you to become and look more like Him. Spend time in His presence, and He will transform you!
Full forgiveness isn't an easy task. It requires effort from you to show grace to someone who's wronged you, and strength to continue in relationship with them while removing the fault from your interactions. In today's message, Pastor Mark will ask you to exercise complete forgiveness in every situation, no matter how difficult it is! The alternative is partial forgiveness, which doesn't forget the wrong and clings to the pain. This only leads to more problems down the road, with those unresolved hurts resurfacing at inopportune moments. It's better to forgive and let go of the pain now, and begin to live in the freedom from the wound!
Are you currently fighting with someone? Is there a person in your life with whom you are estranged? In today’s message, Pastor Mark reminds you of the fragility of life so that you may get the motivation you need to seek reconciliation. Never forget that when you are volleying harsh words and insults at someone you love, you are not guaranteed the next minute of breath, let alone tomorrow. Don’t allow your words be unloving ones… ever! Jesus taught that if it is in your power to make peace, you should make peace. Jesus also commanded His people to be forgiving and to love others with God’s sacrificial limitless love.
Have you ever tried to give good advice only to have it completely rejected? In today’s message, Pastor Mark points out that sometimes even the best most Godly advice isn’t followed. Sometimes folks seeking your ear don’t want their problems to be fixed. They are instead more interested in scoring points and winning an argument. Unfortunately, when you encounter such people, it is best to stay neutral and not involve yourself in their conflicts. The people that you should pour into and invest in are those that not only want to hear God’s perspective, but also are also humble and willing to do what Jesus says.
Jesus calls all of His children to be peacemakers. Part of peacemaking is understanding what causes conflict and then providing solid Biblical wisdom to those seeking God’s counsel. In today’s message, Pastor Mark warns you to never take sides on an issue until you have heard both parties speak. Scripture points out that you can only rightly discern what’s really going on between two feuding people when you hear each person speak. Sin can lead to shame, not just for the person who committed the sin, but also for the people that sin affected. You, today, might be dealing with shame that someone else's sin caused. Sin is part of every person's life, even yours. You may not like to admit it, but sin happens everyday! It can be as small as a little white lie, but everything that's done outside of God's will is something that needs to be dealt with. The tendency of most people, though, is to sweep it under the rug. You want to hide it, from other people and from God. In today's message, Pastor Mark will ask you to take that sin out of its hiding place and hand it over to your Creator! He already knows about it – you really can't hide anything from God. You'll feel much better once you've revealed your wrong and accepted grace to cover it!
God wants you to be close to Him. He knows that the best life there is can be found standing next to Him and leaning fully on Him. Sometimes, He needs to take extreme steps to remind you of that! A lot of times it seems easier to wander away from God toward whatever you think will be better – something you might even be replacing God with. Let Him do the necessary work to create a better you, the person He knows you can and need to be!
What sort of seeds of sin are you planting right now? They may be small and seemingly insignificant, little missteps that you can't see any harm in. Misunderstandings can easily lead to unnecessary, vicious battles. They ought to be avoided when possible, and handled graciously and humbly when necessary. God has prepared you in His word with the wisdom you need. In 2 Samuel 10, David and Hanun had a misunderstanding that led to outright warfare. Pride, suspicion, bad counsel and stubbornness will always lead to heartache and death. Life will has necessary battles enough. Avoid the danger of needless pain and deal with life's misunderstandings with humility and patience. In today's message, Pastor Mark will give us a biblical guide to handling misunderstandings.
2 Samuel chapter 10 is almost a case study in what not to do when you have a misunderstanding. King David sincerely tried to comfort King Hanun of Ammon, and who completely misinterpreted David's intentions. Suspicion and bad counsel got the best of Hanun. He humiliated David's diplomatic envoy of servants. When he realized his mistake, instead of humbling himself and speaking earnestly with David, Hanun escalated the situation in pride - causing a full on war. Nahash, king of the Ammonites, passed away and when King David heard about it, he decided to send several of his trusted servants to comfort his son, Hanun. Under the influence of some pretty bad counselors, Hanun completely misinterprets David's intentions and mercilessly humiliates the delegation of well-wishers that he had sent. Misunderstanding and misinterpretation can lead to serious confusion, humiliation and shame. How do you handle misunderstanding? In today's message, Pastor Mark will give us wisdom and counsel from the Scriptures to avoid and diffuse misunderstanding and minimize it's casualties.
After having been established as king over Israel, David sought out any descendants of Jonathan, Saul's son, and found he had a son called Mephibosheth that was lame in his feet. Instead of treating him like a threat to his own leadership, he showered him with blessings, grace and honor - seating him at David's table, and treating him like a son. God has done the same for you. You are lost and powerless without God, and yet He has sought you out, offered you forgiveness, exalted you to a high position of honor; even adopting you as His own. In 2 Samuel chapter 9, you find one of the most touching and revealing glimpses into the heart and mind of King David. Having settled into his kingdom, David looked for any descendents of his dearly departed friend Jonathan and found a son that had been tragically crippled in infancy. David could have justifiably viewed him as a threat to his own rule, but instead treated him with kindness and generosity. In a truly remarkable display of grace, David brings him into his home and treats him like royalty. If you've accepted Jesus as your Savior, you should know that God has called you to a life of victory. Your life will have conflict. We are engaged in a spiritual battle, after all. But your challenges should be characterized by victory as God enables you to conquer areas of your life for God's glory. That means that as you yield those areas to God's authority, God is able to exalt Himself in those areas. 2 Samuel chapter 8 shows you that if God can enable David to defeat his enemies on every side, God can enable you to do the same. 2 Samuel chapter 8 speaks of one sweeping victory after another for King David's newly established kingdom. The enemies of God's people are defeated in droves as David strengthens Israel's security against the antagonistic nations around them. Your life is made up of so many different kinds of experiences. Sure, there are times of when your Christian walk will feel a lot like an epic battle for your life; but there are also times of rest and calm, momentary breaks and lulls in the storm. King David was a great man and a renown warrior; but in 2 Samuel 7 his gives you an illustration of how to handle the challenges that come with regular, uneventful seasons of life. David had it in his heart to bring the ark of the covenant into the city of Jerusalem. After an ill advised attempt that ended in tragedy, he finally seeks out in the Scriptures how to go about God's work, in God's way. As he obeyed the Scriptures and acted on God's will in a manner that reflected God's heart, God's people were able to celebrate and rejoice in God's presence. As David danced before the people in joy, his wife Michal chastised him for being undignified and embarrassing her. We will never go wrong if we direct our lives by the commandments and principles taught to us in Scripture. After a misguided spiritual decision ended in tragedy, David struggled with the consequences of his ill informed plans to bring the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem. Finally, David gave voice to a question that should have been asked long before, "How can I bring the ark of the Lord to me?" When was the last time you stopped to ask God how you should act? In today's message, Pastor Mark will encourage us to seek God and make sure we know God's heart before we act presumptuously on His behalf.
After proving himself in battle, David turned his attention and heart to the spiritual state of the nation of Israel. He undertook the enormously meaningful task of bringing the long abandoned ark of the covenant to Jerusalem. Although his intentions seem wonderful, the way he goes about it leaves much to be desired in the eyes of the Lord. It's a shame that David didn't first ask God how He wanted things to be done. The ends don't justify the means with God. He also very much cares about how we go about doing His work. In today's message, Pastor Mark will remind us to go back to the Lord and get our instructions from Him.
As we continue our journey with Christ, we may expect our trials and tests to get easier. Unfortunately, the reality is, things usually get harder. The temptations that trip us up as new believers may no longer be an issue, but God often allows us to face new challenges that will test us to our limits and beyond. As Pastor Mark explains in today’s message, if we don’t face these types of tests, we can’t expect to grow. As we confront these battles and hardships, our vulnerability and incompetence will be revealed and we will have the opportunity to lean into God’s power and place our trust more fully in Him.
We can pray till our lips are blue and our knees are calloused, but are we really willing to surrender ourselves over to God’s will? His ways generally look a lot different than our ways. We may struggle with doubt, wondering why He’s not answering our prayers, but as Pastor Mark reminds us in today’s message, when we bow to His will and allow Him to come in and work, we will start to experience spiritual growth. It will often be painful, and we may have to let go of our own dreams and aspirations, but the purpose He has in store is so much greater and it will be completely worth it in the end.
The Jebusites were a harmful stronghold that weakened Israel as a nation and held on to the land that would eventually become the site for God’s temple. Israel had taken the land that God promised them, but instead of following through and taking all of the land and getting rid of every remnant of the enemy, their doubts stood in the way and the Jebusites held them back for hundreds of years. As Pastor Mark explains in today’s message, we often have similar spiritual strongholds in our own hearts. We have been brought into a state of spiritual abundance, but instead of thriving, we allow some little sin to harbor in our hearts.
Are you making Jesus wait for you? If you've never fully surrendered to His authority over your life, He is waiting for you. King David waited years for the nation of Israel to acknowledge God's hand upon his life. They eventually yielded to God and were the better for it as a nation. David served them as a great king. God's authority and sovereignty ruled over them well and they prospered under his leadership. If you haven't surrendered to God's authority yet, what are you waiting for? What are you making Jesus wait for? In today's message, Pastor Mark will spur us on to commit ourselves to the authority of Jesus Christ.
In 2 Samuel 5, the nation of Israel gathered together to David at Hebron to officially accept and receive him as king over the entire nation of Israel. Though they knew that God had appointed him, and given him the throne, they still waited years before acknowledging his rightful place over them. What about you? Who has the final say in your life? Who is your king? Sometimes we set ourselves up as the final authority for ourselves, but if we've accepted Christ as our Savior, Jesus alone deserves to sit on the throne of our hearts. In today's message, Pastor Mark will encourage us to stop procrastinating, and finally make Jesus our Lord!
Have you ever had an idea about God and His nature, and then realize you were wrong once you opened up the Bible and started reading? The enemy is always actively trying to pervert and distort the image of God in our minds, and this is why we need to continually wash over our minds and renew them in the Word of God daily. We get enough negative and false ideas from our own flesh, the influence of the world and those around us. So the only way to stay grounded in the truth is to wash away those lies with the truth of God's Word. If you're not regularly making time to read God's Word, change that bad habit today!
In our text today, Pastor Mark will be teaching us not to be like Ishbosheth. Ishbosheth was weak because he trusted in man rather than trusting in God. Many times we grow impatient waiting on the Lord to answer our prayers and we take matters into our own hands by trusting in ourselves, or another person. This is the worst thing we can possibly do, because we are told to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and to not lean on our own understanding. We are to acknowledge God in all our way's and He will direct our paths the Bible says. We can count on God to work all things out for our good if we love Him.
God is a gentlemen and He doesn't force anyone to love Him and follow Him. If God were to make us love Him and serve Him then that wouldn't be love at all. Love is a choice that needs to be made, this is why God gave Adam and Eve all the fruit from every tree to eat from, except that one tree. God placed a choice before Adam and Eve because without having the choice to obey Him, they couldn't choose to love Him. God doesn't make robots, He desires us to have free will and decisions to make. Today, Pastor Mark will be encouraging us to choose to love God by obeying Him completely. Don't hold onto any sin, it's not worth it.
As Christians, we are the Bride of Christ and God made the institution of marriage a symbol of the union between His Church and Him being the Groom. This is the main reason marriage is so viciously attacked by the world and the Devil, because it's a picture that should point people to the relationship they could have with Jesus. The Devil tries to take everything God has said is good, and try to pervert it and twist it up and make it bad. We need to take marriage seriously and we need to keep marriage sacred! The world will try to change marriage into everything other then what God has intended it to be.
As Pastor Mark continues his teaching series through the book of 2 Samuel, he'll be reminding us that we can't serve two masters, we will either hate the one and love the other. It simply doesn't work trying to follow the Lord, and also trying to fulfill your own plans and lusts of your flesh. Jesus wants to sit on the throne of your heart and be Lord and Master over your entire life. If you're not willing to give your whole self over to the Lord, you simply haven't surrendered yourself over to His Lordship. Jesus doesn't allow any middle ground, He say's very clearly in Revelation that those who are lukewarm, He will vomit out of His mouth.
Are you the type of Christian that prays for God to bless your plans, and asks God to be a part of the work your doing? Or are you the type of Christian that prays for God to allow you to be a part of His plans and the work that He's doing? Pastor Mark will be challenging us to stop thinking of God as an entity that simply comes along side us and blesses whatever we decide to do, like He's a genie that grants wishes or something. God is Almighty and all powerful, who has saved us from sin and death, we should have the reverence and awe to ask if we can be a part of what He's doing. We need to obey Him, not the other way around.
Do you choose to obey the Lord in forgiving others and loving your enemies? When God gives us a command in His Word, it's not a suggestion, it's an order that needs to be followed immediately. As Pastor Mark continues his teaching series through the book of 2 Samuel, he'll be reminding us that we are ambassadors for Jesus and what we do and say is a direct reflection on Him. If we proclaim to be Christians then we are in essence saying we are “little Christ's”, we are His representatives. Would you say you're properly representing the forgiving and loving nature of the Lord towards those around you?
Do not be deceived, God is not mocked, you will reap what you sow. This verse comes to life during our text today in 2 Samuel, as Saul is killed by an Amalekite that God commanded him to destroy earlier on. Today, Pastor Mark will be exhorting us to take God's commands seriously and when we play around with sin, it will eventually be our undoing. The Amalekites are a picture of our flesh nature that God commands us to completely destroy. Saul didn't obey God in destroying all the Amalekites, and he let the king survive. If Saul completely obeying the Lord, he would never have died a the hands of an Amalekite.
Today, Pastor Mark will be reminding us how although God is love, He is also a just and righteous Judge. God is holy, and in order for us to commune with Him and eventually have fellowship in Heaven with Him, we must have the righteousness of Christ within us. In our text today, Saul dies because of his sin against God. God lovingly tries drawing everyone to repentance, and often times gives multiple U-turns to get us in the right direction. There comes a point however, when God allows us to reap what we sow because He is just and is not mocked. We need to make sure we don't take advantage of God's grace!
Many people in the world believe in “karma”, they think that if you do something bad, it will return back to you. Today, Pastor Mark will be explaining how although karma isn't biblical, there is a spiritual law in place that say's we will reap what we sow. The Bible say's we shouldn't be deceived, God is not mocked, we will reap what we sow, weather it's deeds of righteousness that lead to life, or seeds of the flesh that lead to death. We can't continue to live sinful lives and not expect to reap the destruction that follows. God has given us commands so that we would be free from the consequences of a sinful lifestyle.
We are promised a victorious Christian life when we remain obedient to God's Word and remain in His will. Just as David was victorious in battle when he was obedient and walking according to God's will, you also will have victory when your submitted to God. Today, Pastor Mark will be challenging us to examine why we may be failing in our Christian walk in certain aspects. Chances are it's as simple as us returning to reading the Word of God and developing a stronger prayer life. Maybe there are certain shows and movies you should stop feeding your flesh. Perhaps there's some friends you need to walk away from.
Is there any aspect of your flesh that you refuse to put to death? God commands us to put to death the deeds of our flesh, and to be alive in Jesus! As Pastor Mark continues his teaching series through the book of 1 Samuel, he'll be explaining how the Amalekites are symbolic of our flesh nature. God commanded Saul to destroy all the Amalekites because they were too dangerous and would ultimately bring destruction to His people. Saul disobeyed the Lord and didn't completely obey His Word, and in the end it was an Amalekite that killed Saul. Whatever sin you may be keeping alive, be careful because it may be your undoing.
All things work together for good to those that love God and are called according to His purposes. This is a very popular Bible verse, and many times you hear it quoted as : All things work together for good. Pastor Mark will be reminding us that the second half of that verse is the most important! Everything will work out eventually for good, to those that love God. God is sovereign and ultimately in control of everything. So when a good opportunity is missed, or we are forced to change course, it's because God knows whats ultimately best for us. We need to lean not on our own understanding and trust in God.
The children of Israel had one major problem all throughout their history. They grew comfortable when God delivered them from their enemies, and began to worship idols. An acid test to see if you have any idols in your life is simply this: Is there any person or thing that has a greater influence over you than God does? God should have the preeminence over your life, and if there's a person that's causing you to neglect God's commands, that's idolatry. If money has such a hold on you that it causes you to be selfish and greedy, that has become an idol in your life. When you keep God first, you'll have fulfillment and true satisfaction.
All throughout the Bible we read about how God hates hypocrisy and vain religious rituals. The main group of people Jesus was continually rebuking was the religious Jewish leaders of His day. They said all the right things, they appeared to be godly on the outside. Jesus called them white washed tombs filled with dead mans bones, because they were spiritually dead inside even though they appeared righteous. Pastor Mark will be encouraging us to be honest and not revert to just speaking “christianese”, but to truly be genuine. There's a freedom that comes with being sincere. God simply wants a relationship with you!
Have you ever been face to face with sin in your life that you've heard in a sermon or read in the Bible, and you just turned a blind eye? Sometimes we downplay what we know is God's voice, and sometimes we ignore the Holy Spirit when He's convicting us. As Pastor Mark continues his teaching series through 1 Samuel, he'll be challenging us to not simply be hearers of the Word only, but to be doers as well. God demands change when He fills us with His Holy Spirit. God requires us to cooperate with the Holy Spirit as He sanctifies us and makes us more into the image of Jesus.
The Bible say's that sin is pleasurable, but only pleasurable for a season! There comes a point when the destructive nature of sin will begin to bear fruit in your life and the amount of grief and decay that takes place will greatly over shadow the temporary season of pleasure that sin gives. Today, Pastor Mark will be reminding us that Satan doesn't just bring random situations our way, but he baits us with specific temptations that appear “not so bad”. He is called the father of lies, and he manipulates and deceives us into believing that sin doesn't have consequences. We need to submit to God, and reject that devil and he will flee!
There are many false teachings out there being preached in many churches that say Christians are never supposed to experience trials and hardship. Jesus Himself sent His disciples into a boat to cross the other side, knowing there was a storm that would challenge their faith and cause extreme discomfort. Thankfully, Jesus had His eye on them the whole time as they were going through this trial. When we live in obedience to God's Word, no matter what the trial or hardship, Jesus is right there covering us. He works out all things for good to those that love Him and are called according to His purpose.
As Pastor Mark continues his teaching through the book of 1 Samuel, he'll be encouraging us to remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit and to cooperate with His leading. As humans we tend to like the idea that we are the ones in control of our own lives and fate. Now, as Christians we unfortunately still struggle from time to time with letting this go and giving our lives over to the Lordship of Jesus in our day to day decisions. Thankfully God is gracious, and even when we make a mistake God provides us with a U-turn back in the right direction. Our goal is to die to ourselves, and to allow more of Jesus to reign in us.
Jesus said: “I am the Vine, you are the branches, a part from Me, you can do nothing”. This is a scripture that we should truly take to heart, because it has major implications for our lives. It's a foundational truth that once applied, will allow us to have victory over any sin that has a stronghold over our lives. As Pastor Mark continues his teaching series through the Book of 1 Samuel, he'll be encouraging us to spend intimate time with Jesus in prayer and through His Word. It's only by this intimate connection to the Vine, that we can produce the fruit of the Spirit. Are you producing good fruit, or bad fruit?
Do you realize that you're in a spiritual battle? As a Christian, you have an enemy that wants to destroy your walk with the Lord every moment of your life here on Earth. Since Satan can't harm God, he tries to ruin God's children. Today, Pastor Mark will be reminding us that the only way we can be successful in this spiritual battle is by giving it over to the Lord. The Bible say's: Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit say's the Lord of Hosts. Sometimes we try to overcome our flesh and temptations in our own strength and too often we are left defeated. We simply need to cooperate with the work and power of the Holy Spirit in us!
It's been said: “ The family that prayers together, stays together”. This may seem like a nice sounding quote with a ring to it, but it's actually quite biblical. The only way we have a shot at maintaining a successful marriage, is by having a close, intimate relationship with Jesus first and foremost. Today, Pastor Mark will be exhorting us to have harmonious fellowship with God, and in doing so all our other relationships will thrive as well, especially with our spouse. When you choose to sacrifice your time in the morning or in the evening to pray and read the Word of God, you'll end up reaping a spiritual reward!
Marriage is a sacred covenant that has been instituted by God. It was meant to be a symbol of the covenant made between Jesus and the Church, His bride. This is the main reason that marriage is so viciously attacked by the Devil, because he wants to ruin any picture of the love of God towards His people. As Pastor Mark teaches us the account of Abigail and Nabal, he'll be reminding us that just because your spouse may fall in sin or act foolish, it doesn't mean the other should abandon them. The Bible say's two heads are better than one, and you need to lift up your spouse when they fall, not just give up on them and walk away.
As Pastor Mark continues his teaching series through the Book of 1 Samuel, he'll be reminding us that God's desire for us is to act on our will and not on our feelings. The heart is deceitfully wicked, who can know it? If we were to act on our feelings, we would be in a lot of trouble. Our flesh is unfortunately still a part of us while we are living on this Earth. We need to learn like David did, to keep our emotions in check while making decisions, and to act according to the will of God. All throughout the Bible we are commanded to refrain from things that our emotions would desire us to do.
Have you ever read a command from the Lord in the Bible that you just knew you couldn't obey in your own strength? Today, Pastor Mark will be challenging us to obey God's Word supernaturally by the power of the Holy Spirit that now lives within us. We don't battle against flesh and blood, our warfare is against spiritual principalities and demons, our only shot at living a victorious Christian life is by God's Spirit. In order to turn the other cheek and love those that persecute us, we need to be abiding in Jesus the Vine. The only way we can bear the fruit of the Spirit is by staying closely connected to Him.
Anytime you trust in anything other than God, it will always lead to barrenness and frustration. The Bible say's we should trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding, in all our way's acknowledging Him and He will direct our paths. Pastor Mark will be encouraging us to be more like David and to look at Saul's example as one to never follow. Saul in his self centered frenzy continued to pursue and hunt David down because he wanted to control his own fate rather than trust in God. David on the other hand, desired God's will to be done, and remained faithful to Him even while being hunted.
Have you ever experienced a hardship but chose to worship and praise God through it? When Christians suffer and walk through trials and remain joyful and still seek and serve the Lord, we shine extra bright before unbelievers in the world. Today, Pastor Mark will be reminding us that we have a spot lite on us, and that unbelievers are always watching us and waiting to see what we are going to do and say because we claim to be Christian. New believers are watching as well! When David was being hunted by Saul, he still remained faithful and praised God, and his men and family around him saw this and grew in their faith.
Too often, we put on a Christian face, and talk the “Christian-ese” when we walk into Church acting like everything is perfect, when in fact, we truly need prayer and help. Today, Pastor Mark will be exhorting us to not play the hypocrite and to be honest to ourselves and others about our spiritual walk. Saul tried to cover up his sin and refused to seek wise counsel, and unfortunately there can be a little bit of Saul in all of us at times. We don't like to go to others for prayer, because that would mean we would appear vulnerable as if everything isn't always okay. All of us have sin and shortcomings and we all need help at times!
As Pastor Mark continues his teaching series through the Book of 1 Samuel, he'll be challenging us to serve rather than be served, and to love others rather than expect it in return. Jesus showed the best example of unconditional love, He ministered and served individuals, not desiring anything in return. Jesus simply wanted to follow the Fathers orders, and draw men and woman to repentance and receive everlasting life for themselves. In our text today, we see the opposite of this, Saul was totally selfish and self-centered and only cared about what was in it for him. This is why God removed Saul from the throne, and raised up David.
It's been said: “If you hang around a barber shop, you're going to eventually get your hair cut”. Today, Pastor Mark will be reminding us that the key to our spiritual success, is to simply abide in Jesus and to draw near to Him. We all tend to become more like the person we look up to and spend most of our time with. Just like a son that admires his dad tends to follow in his footsteps, we are God's children and should admire and look up to the Lord and become more like Him. On the other hand, when we spend time idolizing the things of this world, and look up to ungodly celebrities or athletes, we tend to live unholy lives.
Would you ever bring your own plastic fork or knife when going to a wedding? Of course you wouldn't, because those are articles used at a barbecue or a casual event. At a wedding there are champagne glasses and more honorable articles that are used. As Pastor Mark continues his teaching series through the Book of 1 Samuel, he'll be explaining how just as the Temple of God had articles used for honor, and articles used for dishonor, we too are articles God wants to use. Except, God desires us to be used as articles of honor, not dishonor. We need to purpose to cleanse ourselves of everything dishonorable, so God can use us.
Do you ever stop to think about how your in a spiritual battle? As Christians, we are in the most intense and important battle that has ever been fought, because it's a battle over our souls and the souls of those we love. We can either fight this spiritual battle with carnal weapons, or we can fight this battle with the spiritual weapons and armor God has given us. It may seem obvious that we can't fight a spiritual battle with carnal, physical weapons but we try to daily! How often do we say, “OH if I only had more money my life would be better”, or if I just had a better job things would work out”. We need to look towards the Lord!
We've all been faced with trials and hardships, what separates the Christian from the unbeliever is that we have the Body of Christ to lean on. More importantly, we have the God of the universe to confide in and to draw strength from when we are experiencing difficulties in life. David knew that he would get a word from the Lord when he found a fellow brother to talk to. When you come face to face with tribulation, where do you turn? Do you look towards the world for advise and comfort, or do you seek the Lord and get wise counsel from the Church? Always remember that bad company corrupts good character.
Most of us are all in regarding God’s will as long as it benefits us. But, as soon as it compromises our desires and goals, we quickly find our zeal waning and begin to question God’s wisdom. As we continue to examine Samuel’s account of Saul’s pursuit of David, we can be challenged by the example of Jonathon. As Pastor Mark points out, Jonathon stood to lose his right to the throne of his father. He risked the hatred and lashing out of his father over his rebellion. But, because he knew that God favored David, and had a greater purpose for him, he was willing to sacrifice his own will for the sake of God’s.
God gave us the gift of friendship - He never meant for us to do this journey on our own. The story of David would have looked much different if it weren’t for his friendship with Jonathon. God placed them in each other’s lives for a reason. He used Jonathon to encourage David when he needed it, and even to protect him when his very life was in danger. As Pastor Mark challenges us to ask in today’s message, do we have any friends like that? Are we that kind of friend? It requires being sensitive to the feelings of others and aware of the quiet leading of the Holy Spirit as we walk through this life together.
If you stick a fork in an electrical outlet, you can expect bad results. Many of our hardships and trials do come as a direct result of our poor choices, but that is not always the case. Whether they are self-wrought or completely outside of our control, the storms of life can be seen as a curse or an opportunity. As Pastor Mark challenges us in today’s message, instead of over-analyzing every situation we’re confronted with, we have a loving Father who is waiting for us to bring it to His feet. As we trust ourselves to His care and guidance, we will find that He can bring redemption out of the worst circumstances.
Saul made some big mistakes as a parent and it came back to haunt him. He had a son who chose to go behind his back, and a daughter who wasn’t afraid to lie to him. Ultimately, God used his poor parenting to protect David through his children’s disobedience and disrespect. As Pastor Mark explains in today’s message, while God will work things out for His purposes no matter the mistakes we make, we need to be careful to parent our children in a Godly way. If we don’t teach them the importance of respect and discipline, we can expect them to learn it the painful way in a lost and dying world.
Sin unchecked will wreak havoc and ultimately destroy a person’s life. We often believe the lie that a momentary pleasure will not have any serious consequences, but that is a device of Satan. Another way he deceives us is by convincing us that the sins of our fellow believers are “none of our business.” As Pastor Mark studies the story of David and his conflict with Saul, we see the ultimate toll that sin took in Saul’s life. A small amount of jealousy grew into a full blown desire to murder. In His divine wisdom, God placed Jonathon into the story to check the sin of his father and prevent David’s untimely death.
We have it pretty easy in our country. People around the world are dying of hunger, going days, even weeks without a good meal, yet we complain when we miss one on a rare occasion. At the same time, some of our international brothers and sisters in Christ are being imprisoned and even murdered for their beliefs. Meanwhile we’re getting upset over biased media coverage or petty insults thrown our way. As Pastor Mark reminds us in today’s message, we need to widen our perspective. We can be grateful for the easy life we have here, but we need to be wary of the complacency it can nurture in our hearts.
It’s a mistake to assume that because God loves us that He will shelter and protect us from all hardship. As we look back at the history of Christianity, at the thousands who have given their lives for the sake of the Gospel, it becomes apparent that the life of a believer is often the complete opposite of sheltered. We will be tested as we live out our faith. Satan will target us and God will allow it because He knows it can make us stronger. As Pastor Mark encourages us in today’s message, instead of moping around wondering why the world is out to get us, we need to demonstrate the joy and hope of fully relying on Christ.
When David went out to confront Goliath he didn’t go out in his own strength. If he had, he would have faltered and lost. He wasn’t just hoping God would help him and make his aim true. No, as Pastor Mark explains in today’s message, David trusted that God would deliver Israel, and He was going to be victorious over this giant. If we seek God’s will in our own lives and trust in Him to accomplish it, even when it seems impossible by human standards, we can have the same confidence. Nothing is impossible for God, and He will bring us through to victory no matter how formidable our enemy seems.
David didn’t know exactly how his face-off with Goliath was going to go down. He was human – he couldn’t see the future, and he didn’t possess any supernatural powers or abilities. What he did possess was faith. He had been told of his God’s faithfulness and provision. He knew the ways that God had delivered His people in the past, and that He had promised to protect and provide for them. As Pastor Mark reminds us in today’s message, God’s promises are just as good for us. We don’t know what may happen or how God will come through, but we can have absolute confidence that He will.
God has a calling and purpose for all of His Children. When we choose to follow Him and live our lives as His servants, we are accepting His will and placing it over our own. As we continue to study the story of David, we can find encouragement in his example. He wasn’t the tallest, or the strongest, but God had been preparing him to accomplish great things for His glory. As Pastor Mark challenges us in today’s message, if we make ourselves available to God and follow His direction for our lives, we can expect Him to use us to take on giants. We don’t need to be scared, because all of our strength will come from Him.
This life is tough. We are in the middle of a spiritual war of epic proportions. When we choose to ignore that truth and expect God to protect us from all suffering and hardship all the time, we are in for a rude awakening. As long as we walk in this world, we are promised by Jesus Himself that we are going to have trouble. As Pastor Mark continues to examine the story of David facing down Goliath and the Philistines, we can take courage from David’s example. Even in the face of great difficulty, we can find joy and strength. Our God will allow suffering, but never beyond what we can handle with His strength and comfort.
We have the Bible, our own personal experience, as well as the experience of countless other believers, all testifying to the strength of our God. We have stories, like the one we’ll explore in today’s message with Pastor Mark, that demonstrate God’s power over even the biggest obstacles we can face in this world. David drew from this knowledge. He knew Israel’s history of how God had provided and brought victory in even the most impossible situations. Many of his comrades had this same knowledge, but they fell for the hype instead. It’s time for us to stop falling for that tactic of the enemy and trust in our Lord.
All of us have Goliaths in our lives. These giants can take different forms. It may be a person we are intimidated by, or perhaps a situation. Maybe an illness, or a financial struggle. The armies of Israel cowered before their Goliath. They had the God of the universe on their side, but instead of drawing from years of favor and provision, they allowed the visible strength of their enemy to scare them into submission. As Pastor Mark encourages us in today’s message, just as David stood up with the strength of God and conquered that Goliath, we can stand up and conquer whatever giants are facing us in our lives.
Many of us are missing opportunities to share the Gospel for the sake of pride or comfort. Our words or lifestyles often don’t look any different than that of our unsaved friends or loved ones. In many cases, those people may not even know we’re saved. This is a truly sad state to be in. We may tell ourselves that we’ll talk about it tomorrow, or someday soon, but that may be too late. We all live a moment away from eternity and we may not have tomorrow. As Pastor Mark challenges us in today’s message, it’s time to start living “set apart”. We have been sanctified and commissioned by Christ to make disciples in all nations.
Satan has run a very successful campaign to draw the modern Church into a place of complacency. One of our chief missions as followers of Christ is to share what He has done for us with others. Yet, as Pastor Mark asks in today’s message, when’s the last time we did that? When’s the last time we talked with a lost person about the soul-saving love that Christ demonstrated for us on the cross? Most of us are afraid – it makes us uncomfortable to even think about it. It’s time to step out of that comfort zone. We have a message that needs to be spread, and to keep it hidden away is selfish and unloving.
We can’t follow God on our own terms. To follow Him is going to be hard. We are going to be stretched and pushed outside of our comfort zones. We often esteem David as having some special qualities that made him exceptionally equipped to serve as God’s servant. Yet, as Pastor Mark points out in today’s message, the only way that David may have been special was in his inadequacy. As a shepherd, he was at the bottom of the social ladder. He wasn’t the best looking, tallest or strongest. He probably wasn’t the smartest either. Yet, God took him and anointed him to serve a crucial role in leading His people.
God does not want complacent, idle followers. To follow requires that we get up off our couches – out of our places of comfort – and go to the places that Jesus is going. There certainly is a time and place for resting in God, but that should only be a part of our spiritual walk, not the whole thing. As Pastor Mark continues to lead us through our study of 1st Samuel, we are reminded that we need to get up and seek God’s will. As we get out there and do the things He calls us to, loving others with the grace that He extended to us, we will find fulfillment and joy that can’t be found elsewhere.
When we cling to our sins we are playing a dangerous game. We may keep it hidden away from our friends and family, but, just like a slow moving cancer, it will eat away at the cage we’ve put it in and work its way into the rest of our lives. Even if we succeed in keeping it secret, it will have a negative effect on everything it touches. As Pastor Mark challenges us in today’s message, we need to put that sin to death… and burn the remains. We can only do that with the help of the Holy Spirit. When we bring that dark cancer before the Lord, He will help us completely eradicate it from our lives.
God is love… That’s a beautiful message, but the problem is that we don’t understand love all that well. We think love means no confrontation. We think it means we’ll feel good all the time. That simply is not the case. As Pastor Mark reminds us in today’s message, we are sinful people. We inherited a nature that seeks self above others. To preach a Gospel that ignores that sinful nature is to neuter the Gospel. We need salvation because of our rebellion against God. If we continue down that path, we will suffer in separation from Him for eternity, but when we accept Christ’s gift, He changes us from the inside out.
As long as we walk in this flesh, we will struggle to surrender it to God and fully rely on Him. No believer in the history of our faith has ever fully relied on God all of the time. When we take an honest look at our sources of strength, we will find that relationships, position, money or possessions often come before God on our list. As Pastor Mark encourages us in today’s message, the first step towards relying more fully on God is to be honest and confront those idols. While we may not be able to reach a perfect state of reliance in this world, this Holy Spirit is constantly leading us closer to that end goal.
We often feel like God is silent in our lives. We read the Bible and encounter a God who talks to the prophets; who has a physical voice. Yet, we’ve never heard it. It can make Him feel distant, and it makes us feel small and insignificant. As Pastor Mark explains in today’s message, God is talking to us. If we are really listening, we will hear our Father speaking. It may never be a physical voice out of thin air, but He speaks to our hearts through the Spirit and Scripture as well as our fellow Christians. If we quiet our own reason and all the distractions of this world, before long we will be able to pick out the voice of our Shepherd.
Too often we view church as a sort of Holy of Holies, where if we enter with any sin in our lives, we’ll immediately face the judgment of God as well as that of the people there, who seem like they have everything together. As Pastor Mark explains in today’s message, instead we need to view the church more as a clinic. Everyone that enters its doors are bringing struggles and sinfulness in with them. None of us have got it all figured out, and the Church is a place that we can be vulnerable and honest. We come to Church seeking the healing and restoration that only can be found through Christ Jesus.
Some Christians have a completely unrealistic expectation for what their life as a follower of Christ should look like. They think that Jesus is a sort of spiritual glue that will pull all of the brokenness of their lives together and make everything right. They quickly find themselves disappointed as they find the troubles of life still plaguing them long after salvation. As Pastor Mark reminds us in today’s message, our relationship with Christ will not free us from trials – in fact, it often will bring more hardship. What it can bring us is a deep, everlasting joy in the face of those trials and tribulations.
Pride is a dangerously subtle weakness. In our culture, it’s generally seen as a good thing. We are raised to believe that we’re supposed to have a sense of pride in ourselves. But, as we take a look at the example of Saul with Pastor Mark, we are reminded of just how treacherous this sinful attitude can be. Saul was anointed and placed in his position of leadership by God, but somewhere along the way, he started to think he could go it alone. He started to take the glory for his accomplishments, and that led to his downfall. We can expect the same results if we try to live out God’s mission on our own.
It may be hard to understand why God allows us to face certain challenges and hardships. Why would He allow David, as a mere teenager, to be confronted with dangerous predators? Wouldn’t it have been better to shelter and preserve him for the purpose He had for his life? As Pastor Mark points out in today’s message, God used those challenges to prepare David for greater challenges to come. God does not just coddle us and shelter us. He allows those trials to come because He knows that they will force us into situations where we can learn to place our confidence in Him instead of our own strength.
We have a tendency to turn to just about every other resource for help before we turn to God. We read self-help books, listen to motivational speakers, or even more common in this day and age, we do a quick Google search and take the advice of a random blogger or journalist that we know nothing about. As Pastor Mark continues to lead us through 1st Samuel, we are reminded of our need for God’s guidance. He should be the first place we turn as we face the challenges and questions of life. The voices of this world can offer temporary relief, but God will lead us into everlasting joy and peace.
Having abandoned God's commandments before battle, the victory of Saul's attack against the Philistines came at a heavy price for Saul. God publically rebuked him. Whenever we are rebuked by God, it's our opportunity and responsibility to humble ourselves before Him and submit again to His direction. If we become so self-willed that we no longer depend upon God for everything in our lives, we stand in danger of losing those very things we are fighting for. In today's message, Pastor Mark will exhort us to rely on God for everything, and always keep His commandments. God will always work mightily through our obedience.
Saul's first few tests as a king already began to demonstrate some disturbing tendencies to his leadership. Feeling the pressure of the enemies of Israel on one side and of God's own people fleeing from him in fear on the other, Saul gives in to the circumstances and abandons God's commandment to him. What do you do when following Jesus gets tough? Do you compromise and falter? Do you lower your standards? In today's message, Pastor Mark will warn us to never allow our decisions to be driven by self-will and insecurity. God's people must be committed to obedience and completely submitted to God's will.
As Saul settles into his role as the king of Israel, he is confronted with his first true test of character. He raises a meager army and sets up camp against Israel's perennial enemies, the Philistines, and waits. He was given explicit instructions not to engage the enemy until Samuel came to pray and offer a sacrifice to God before battle. As the people waited though, Saul's armies began to be overcome with fear, fleeing and hiding from the coming battle. In today's message, Pastor Mark will help prepare us to handle something we all have to decide on a regular basis - obedience or compromise. How will you respond?
By the end of 1 Samuel 12, God Himself steps in and confirms that the people had done a great wickedness in asking for a king. God validates and affirms Samuel's words, prophecy and ministry by thunder and rain and the people acknowledge that what they had done was wrong. As they begin to panic, Samuel encourages them to repent, to humble themselves and to seek and serve the Lord with a faithful heart from here on out. In today's message, Pastor Mark will remind you that no matter what you've done in the past, if you repent and humbly approach the Lord today, He will receive you and do wondrous things in your life.
As the transition of power in the nation of Israel went from God through the prophet Samuel to the man, King Saul, it was very important to the Lord that His people know and acknowledge that God had done nothing wrong to deserve their rejection in this way. They readily admitted that the Lord and Samuel had always been good to them. Are you still led by the Lord? Is God your king? Or are you beginning to direct and lead yourself wherever you desire, without bothering to take the time to consult God's wisdom and plan? In today's message, Pastor Mark will caution us to remain submitted to God's authority.
Samuel had served the Lord and His people faithfully for many, many years. As he now stands before the people and prepares to hand the reigns of leadership into the hands of their new King Saul, Samuel reminds the people that he had always been faithful. He never cheated them. He reminds them that God had never let them down. If we decide to take the leadership role in our lives away from God, it is important that we take the time to acknowledge that God has always been faithful to us. In today's message, Pastor Mark will make sure we understand that God's faithfulness towards us deserves to be answered with loyalty and devotion.
Are we obeying God when He commands us to go and make disciples? What are we doing in our neighborhoods, in our community, in our church to impact the kingdom of God? Are we just pew warmers? Or are we allowing God to use us for His glory; impacting the lives of others? It's not always easy, or even comfortable, but God tells us to do it. We are to be lights that shine the light of Jesus in the midst of a dark and dying world. In today's message, Pastor Mark will encourage us to live a life that would impact the lives of others for the cause of Christ, simply because God asks us to. Allow Christ to make a difference through you.
We like to rely on the things of this world to get us through tomorrow. Although God's way may often seem slow to us, it is always the better way. As the world surrounds God's people, threatening and intimidating them, God uses Saul to rise up and defeat the enemies of God's people. Don't fall for the deception of only viewing things from a physical, material perspective. God's perspective will bring us peace. We are meant to depend on Him. And why not?! He is the one who truly satisfies in any way. In today's message, Pastor Mark will remind us to turn to God with a full heart of surrender and trust in the midst of challenges.
Do we cower before others when it comes to talking about Jesus? God tells us that we should speak up and give a defense for the hope that is within us. The enemy loves to shame and embarrass believers in front the world. He loves to create fear within the heart of the Christian. But God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. God tells us in his word that He will give freely to whoever desires to have wisdom concerning His Word and Himself. In today's message, Pastor Mark will warn us of the intimidation of the enemy and will remind us that we don't need to allow them to dishearten us.
When Samuel called for Saul to anoint him as king of Israel, he hid. Have you ever been afraid or insecure about God's calling on your life? If you look back, you will find that God has confirmed for you time and time again that He knows you better than you know yourself. Never let insecurity or fear get in the way of obedience and faithfulness to Jesus. It turns out God knew exactly where He was, and He knows where you are at in your life too! In today's message, Pastor Mark will challenge us to stop hiding from God and from His calling. We need to learn to stop reacting to life's challenges with our feelings. Let God lead you today.
God gave Saul the opportunity to have his calling confirmed and established. Now that all the necessarily elements were in place, the prophet Samuel officially calls all the people together to remind them of their history with God, to explain to them that God never let them down even though they had been very unfaithful to Him and finally to officially anoint Saul as the king they desired for themselves. As he ceremoniously has all the people pass before him, Saul is chosen to lead them. He hides in fear and insecurity but God knows exactly where he is. In today's message, Pastor Mark will exhort us to never run from God's calling for our lives. If you sense He is calling you, answer Him today!
Saul's heart was completely changed when God's calling and purpose came to bear upon his life. Saul began to prophesy with the prophets. He was hearing, thinking and speaking God's word to others. If we claim to be saved our lives ought to look different. The things we think about and care about should be different. If you claim to be saved but your life hasn't changed at all then you should reexamine your faith. In today's message, Pastor Mark will challenge us to make sure that Jesus Christ has made a difference in us for the better. Make Jesus the most important thing in your life, and fill your heart with His Word.
As God continues to work in Saul's life, there comes a point when his heart is changed. When God does a work in our hearts, it happens all at once. We should never underestimate the power of God to produce effective change in the heart of someone who has been transformed by Him. In today's message, Pastor Mark will teach us how God's supernatural power will make a difference in your life, enabling you to change in ways that you just simply can't change in your own strength and natural resources. Have you been completely transformed into a new man or woman? If not, completely surrender your life to Him today!
As we follow the anointing of Saul as king of Israel, God arranges his daily life according to His sovereign purpose. We should never get so caught up in the day to day routines that we neglect to notice God's leading and direction. God continues to confirm to Saul that He has chosen him for the job, even though Saul hides from and avoids his calling at every opportunity. In today's message, Pastor Mark will comfort us with the reassurance of God's power and intimate involvement in our daily lives. Are you stressed out about the details in your life? Remember that God is in control. He will guide and take care of you.
God uses the life of King Saul as a great study in contrasts. Saul represents what we always go after in this world - what's flashy, tall and handsome. We can't see past what's on the surface so we often go for what looks good. God would draw a stark distinction between King Saul and his predecessor, King David. 1 Samuel chapter 9 shows us the importance of looking to God for His plan, for His perspective, for His purposes in our daily lives. In today's message, Pastor Mark will encourage us to rely upon God's wisdom and to stop trying to direct things ourselves. God ways are so much better than ours. Will you trust Him today?
Never judge a book by its cover. Saul was a tall and handsome young man. He came from a wealthy family. Yet, despite having so much privilege he seemed disarmingly humble, shying away from the incredible role being offered to him. Although the man Saul seemed like he fit every earthly criteria for leadership on a superficial level, beneath the surface the power that came with the promotion produced pride and a sense of entitlement in his heart. In today's message, Pastor Mark will take the time to walk us through the man that Saul used to be before pride and rebellion ruined him. How can we avoid falling for the same temptations?
The eyes of all of Israel eagerly looked to Samuel, awaiting to find out who God would choose to lead the nation after him. They had requested a king in order to become more like the ungodly nations around them and, even though that was not what God desired for them, He granted their request. In 1 Samuel 9, we are finally introduced to the man God chose - Saul. In every apparent way he seemed to be a perfect fit; but as his life and character unfolded before them, Israel would soon learn all they lost when they gained a human king. In today's message, Pastor Mark will introduce us to Saul, the king Israel requested from God.
It's tempting to imitate the world, especially when we see the world seeming to prosper in their way as we struggle along the narrow path. The Lord tells us that the narrow path isn't always easy, but does lead to everlasting life and eternal reward in heaven. We are suppose to depend on God, not ourselves. When Israel took matters into their own hands, the best they could do was imitate the pattern they saw modeled out in the world around them; but God wanted them to be different. In today's message, Pastor Mark will warn us not to become more like the world. Don't miss out on God's special and unique plan for you.
How do you respond when things get tough? Do you try to change things by brute force, or do you seek God and trust Him to intervene? As the nation of Israel wrestled with what was going to happen after Samuel died, they took matters into their own hands. Trusting God when we feel we could fix matters ourselves takes a willingness to die to our own wants and desires. Our reactions to challenges and challenging people send a clear message to the world around us about how much we trust in God. In today's message, Pastor Mark will exhort us to trust and look to God in our challenges and not look to ourselves.
Twenty five years passed between the end of 1 Samuel 7 and the beginning of 1 Samuel 8. We are introduced to a much older Samuel, coming to terms with the challenges of preparing the nation for the end of his ministry. He had been faithful for many years, but his sons were not up to the task of spiritual leadership and the people knew it. Seasons of change and transition can be very hard for most of us; but God has shown through His word how we can process them ourselves, and how we can prepare the next generation to serve God faithfully. In today's message, Pastor Mark will teach us how to prepare for seasons of change.
As the nation gathered to rededicate their lives to God, their enemies gathered around them to destroy them. It's important to recognize that doing the right thing will almost always encounter massive opposition. You will get attacked, persecuted, mocked, ridiculed and threatened. How do you respond when things get tougher for you just because you're trying to do the right thing? Samuel encouraged them to surrender to God completely and trust in God to deliver them from all their enemies. In today's message, Pastor Mark will prepare us for the struggle each one of us will encounter when we seek to get right with the Lord.
In 1 Samuel 7, the people of God had been brought together around the ark of the covenant by Samuel. He reminded them that though they were defeated, it their own sins had gotten them to this point and that God was willing to receive them if they were willing to turn away from their worship of idols. After laying the foundation for restoration, the prophet Samuel carefully led the people through what needed to take place in their lives if they wanted to get serious with God. In today's message, Pastor Mark will guide us towards restoration along the same path: Put God first; get rid of any idols in your life and serve God alone.
The nature of the relationship that God desires for us to have with Him runs deeper than our daily experiences. He wants us to be established, stable and settled in His love for us, even when everything around us seems to be falling apart. As the children of Israel welcomed the ark of the covenant back into the nation, Samuel brings them together to call upon them to seek the Lord. He reminds them of God's commandments, of their disobedience and of God's willingness to forgive them if they truly repent of their sins. In today's message, Pastor Mark will remind us that the same is true of us. Surrender your life completely to God today!
When the Philistines had possession of the Ark of the Covenant, they showed that they revered God by the way they treated this holy treasure. However, because of their limited knowledge, the Lord did not hold them to the same standards of the Israelites. When the Jews finally took back possession of the Ark, a man was killed because he did not obey God’s instructions on how to transport it. In today’s message, Pastor Mark teaches us that the Lord holds us responsible for what we have heard. This is a sobering thought because it does not matter if we believe. What matters is that when we hear truth, we are fully responsible for that truth and will be judged accordingly.
Do you believe in God? The Bible says that even the demons believe in His existence and shutter. In today’s message, Pastor Mark challenges us to examine ourselves to see if we really are in the Christian faith. The Greatest Commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, body, mind, and strength. Pastor Mark asks, “Are we trying to fulfill this commandment?”, and, “Are we trying to obey the Lord, or are we still in the driver’s seat by making our own decisions without Jesus’s daily input and guidance?” Christ needs to not just be our Savior, but He also need to be our Lord. A true sign of conversion is obedience to His Word.
The Bible says that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. In today’s message, Pastor Mark teaches us that sometimes when we have walked away from God to do our own thing, pride gets in the way of us returning to Him. Other times when an idol of work, money, or other worldly thing does not fulfill or sustain us, we have a hard time admitting it. Pastor Mark points out that men’s pride can be the single biggest stumbling block to restoration. We don’t want to admit we are wrong. We don’t want to say we are sorry. However, to approach Jesus, we must humbly admit that we are sinners and bow low in contrition.
Are you struggling today? Do you feel far away from God? Is your life a seemingly unending stream of messes, or are constantly putting out fires? In today’s message, Pastor Mark teaches us that sometimes when we do not give God the priority He deserves, He allows hardship and turmoil to enter our lives to get our attention. If we have unconfessed sin in our hearts, Jesus uses pain and suffering to get our attention and to draw us back to Himself. In fact, if we do not turn to Him in repentance and sorrow, God will turn up the heat even hotter with natural consequences. Jesus does this out of deep love for us, for it is in His presence that we find healing and peace.
In 1 Samuel chapter 5, the Philistines had possession of the Arc of the Covenant after winning a battle with the Israelites. They took the Arc and put it in their temple and set it next to their god Dagon. The next day, Dagon had fallen on his face. Confused yet undeterred, the Philistines re-erected Dagon. However, they were utterly dismayed when they found Dagon broken into pieces the very next morning. In today’s message, Pastor Mark teaches us that whenever we have idols in our lives, we must work to keep them propped up because they do not sustain us or provide for us. Only the One True God, Jesus, is worthy of our worship. Only He can provide and protect.
The Arc of the Covenant sat in the most holy place of the temple and housed the Lord’s presence. It was beautifully designed and inlaid with gold. It held the Ten Commandments, Aaron’s staff which represented God’s governing authority, and a jar of manna which symbolized the Lord’s provision. In today’s message, Pastor Mark teaches us that those who are in Christ have the Holy Spirit living inside of them. The Lord’s beauty shines within and through His people, and God’s Word sustains them just as manna sustained the Israelites. Finally, God has written His law on the hearts of His children, and they obey His will as they demonstrate Jesus’s love around the world.
In 1 Samuel chapter 4, we read that the glory of the Lord departed from Israel because of the nation’s sin and complacency. In today’s message, Pastor Mark teaches us that we are shine the light of Jesus and reflect His glory to a needy and lost world. Unfortunately, we too can experience separation from the Lord when we fall into habitual sin. The glory of God departs from our lives when we are not fully surrendered to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Pastor Mark points out that truly devoted followers of Christ shine brightly in a dark world when their good deeds and soft hearts bear witness to a close relationship with God.
The Bible says in 1 Samuel chapter 4 that Eli the priest had poor vision and was grossly out of shape. Instead of being diligent in his priestly duties, Eli was lazy and his physical body gave proof to that fact. Even worse, Eli never took the time to discipline his sons though they disobeyed the law of God. Though the Lord sent warnings to Eli, the priest did not listen. Eventually, Eli’s sons were killed and the Arc of the Covenant, a symbol of God’s presence, was taken captive by the Philistines. In today’s message, Pastor Mark teaches us that when we veer away from the Lord’s protective instructions in disobedience, we sign ourselves up for much hurt and heartache.

Pastor Mark teaches us that Jesus wants our very best, and our very best is what He deserves considering all Christ did to love and save us.
In 1 Samuel chapter four, we read that the Israelites took the Ark of the Covenant into battle hoping that it would help them win the war. Instead of revering the Lord’s presence and seeking His real counsel and help, Israel sinned by using a holy item meant only for worship as a good luck charm or a rabbit’s foot. God was not pleased and would not be manipulated into moving on the Israelites behalf. In today’s message, Pastor Mark teaches us that we do the same thing when we try to earn a response from the Lord with an act of kindness or a good deed. Jesus cannot be manipulated into doing what we want Him to do. God wants our true devotion and allegiance.
Sin is very hard to let go of. Because of Adam and Eve, we inherited a selfish nature, and we instinctively choose to do things that make us feel good. The problem is that the fun only lasts so long. Before long, we start to realize that hurting ourselves and others isn’t worth it. By that point, the sin is so entrenched in our lives that it may seem impossible to root out. As Pastor Mark reminds us in today’s message, it is not impossible. Christ purchased our freedom, and through the Holy Spirit we can completely conquer sin. We need to look beyond the short-term pleasure and see the eternal consequences.
Most parents want to protect their children from the harsher realities of life. Hannah and Elkanah would have felt the same about their son, Samuel, yet they surrendered him over and trusted that God would do great things through Him. God gave us that desire to protect our children from things that would harm them and itt’s not a bad thing, but at times, we might shelter them to a dangerous extreme. As Pastor Mark explains in today’s message, God used Samuel, young though he was, to deliver a strong message. God is not limited by age or status; He’ll use even the weakest amongst us to administer His will.
God has blessed all of us with certain strengths that make us well suited to minister in the ways that He calls us to. Sometimes, we might take those special gifts and use them as an excuse to avoid doing things we aren’t as gifted in. As Pastor Mark explains in today’s message, there are certain aspects of the Christian life that are common to all believers. All of us need to be diligently studying the Word, spending time in prayer, and sharing the Gospel with others. Even if we struggle to understand Scripture, or our prayers feel weak, or we struggle to talk with others, He will equip us as we commit to living in His will.
Maybe it’s a particular sin, a habit, a possession, or perhaps a misleading doctrine, but we all have areas of our lives that could be seen as an infection. As with Pastor Mark’s example of an infected tree branch, it may be painful to cut off that harmful part. Many times, it’s become such an important part of our lives that it is stealing resources and energy from our relationship with God. As He reveals those problem areas to us, we are faced with a hard decision. Do we surrender to His loving wisdom and cut that sin or struggle completely out of our lives or do we hang on and let it gradually destroy us?
Serving God can be very hard. It often means going to undesirable places and doing things that are completely selfless. In many cases throughout history, following Jesus has led to persecution and even death. Yet, so many of those believers, even in the middle of painful torture or execution, were filled to overflowing with a supernatural joy. In today’s message, Pastor Mark challenges us to examine our own walk with God. Are we following Him joyfully, ready and willing to endure the social or physical persecution or are we begrudgingly going through the motions simply for the eternal benefits?
Often times parents get caught up in the everyday routine and they neglect the calling God has on their lives. When He blessed them with the gift of children, He also called them to raise them up in the Gospel. Part of every parent’s role is to teach their children as much as they can about who God is and demonstrate what it means to live in relationship with Him. As Pastor Mark examines the account of the Eli’s sons, we are warned to be guarded against spiritual complacency and idleness as we raise our kids. We need to make sure that we are actively pointing them towards our Savior.
Our God is wise and just. Today’s passage presents a harsh reality of who God is. Sometimes He has to allow and even cause things to happen to people who are bringing harm upon His Children. We love the grace side of God, but when His justice comes to bear, we may not like what we see. As Pastor Mark continues to lead us through 1st Samuel, we encounter an example of God’s execution of justice. It may sound unloving, but it was out of His desire to see His Creation redeemed and His Children protected that He had to carry out the painful punishments for the sinful rebellion of Eli’s sons.
God is a wise and generous provider. He knows our hearts, and He understands what we really need. As we try to live a life of faith, relying on Him, it is tempting to get greedy. We thank God for what He’s given us, all the while coveting after the things we don’t have. Instead of being content in His provisions, we try to supplement with our own resources and fulfill those selfish desires. As Pastor Mark reminds us in today’s message, we need to realize that all we really need has been provided by our loving Father and when we feel like there is something we are lacking, it’s an opportunity for us to increase our faith in Him.
What motivates us to be involved in ministry? Are we trying to earn the favor and blessings of God? Do we just enjoy the feeling of being admired and praised by those who we minister to and around? There can be many different motivations behind our ministry, but there is only one right reason to minister. As Pastor Mark reminds us in today’s message, it doesn’t matter how many good things we do, how many people we share the Gospel with, it all comes down to the heart behind it. God desires joyful service that is all for Him. Not for the feelings we get, but simply to bring glory to our Father in Heaven.
Our children are a wonderful gift. God has given them to us and we should never take that for granted. But, it can be easy to turn our children into an idol. We may cling to them tighter than we do our faith in God. As we encounter in the example of Hannah and Elkanah, they had longed to have a child for years and years, finally, God granted her the desire of their hearts, but with the condition that they would give their son back to God. As Pastor Mark points out, their willingness to release their son into God’s will demonstrates the deep level of their faith. They knew that their most important purpose in life was to serve God.
Most parents love to bless their kids. They may work hard to make money that allows for great experiences or possessions that they think will make life better. Or they invest their time and energy into their relationship with their children. Whether a parent is financially capable or not, they do their best to fulfill the desires of their kid’s hearts. As Pastor Mark reminds us in today’s message, there’s nothing wrong with giving your kids good things, but we need to make sure that our top priority is teaching them the truth about their Creator. All the material blessings in the world mean nothing if they don’t have Jesus.
How should we react to trials in our lives as believers? So often, we will worry and fret, racking our brains, stretching the limits of our reason and strength to try to solve the problem. In those times, we may not feel like praying, let alone worshipping. As Pastor Mark continues to examine the story of Hannah in today’s passage, we are reminded of the power of praise in the midst of hardship. We know from the example of Job that despite the worst circumstances, we don’t have to lose faith in God. Satan will purposefully test our dedication, and God allows it as an opportunity for us to grow in our faith.
We live in a culture that nurtures discontent. The advertising industry is one of the most financially prosperous industries out there, and it entirely revolves around making people want what they don’t have. As we seek after material belongings, we think that those things will make us happy, yet within a couple weeks, we find ourselves longing for the next big thing. As Pastor Mark reminds us in today’s message, money and possessions are only temporary. They often become more of a curse than a blessing. When we trust in God, even though we may be lacking from the world’s perspective, we are rich in Him.
It’s hard to see being without as a form of prosperity. We typically associate prosperity with financial or material wealth, but in God’s kingdom, those things simply don’t matter. Hannah did not feel prosperous or blessed as she struggled with her barrenness. She felt bitter and defeated. Yet, as Pastor Mark helps us understand in today’s message, sometimes in those times of lacking, those times of longing, we can gain prosperity of an eternal nature. God can teach us patience and we can learn what it means to fully rely on Him and find joy despite the temporary struggles of this life.

Yet, when we push the speed limit or violate the law, we hope that the officer will just let it go. We all like when things are fair, at least as long as it pertains to others. All of us love to receive grace, but we are not nearly as quick to give it. We live in a very unfair world. Bad things happen to “good” people and the wicked prosper. As Pastor Mark reminds us in today’s message, we all have been given an incredible gift of grace. We deserve death because of our sin, but Christ offers us eternal life and freedom.

As Pastor Mark begins to lead us through the book of 1st Samuel, we are reminded of our desperate need for God’s intervention in our lives. Instead of being a last resort when we are facing a decision or struggle, God should be the first place we should go. We may not always like His solutions, but we can trust that He knows best.
