This is a more reflective episode. I wanted to share something I learned after listening to an interview during one of my financial classes. I'm not going to talk about finance but the psychology of pursuing a goal, passion, or desire. Mark Ritchie III mentioned a book I listed below about the psychology of trading. In the last chapter, they talk about the five capitals. He went in-depth with each one, and there was a massive correlation between this and a player's career in baseball. Enjoy this episode!

Don't be discouraged; you're doing something others are unwilling to do.
Losing sucks! I hate losing more than I love winning, but that's me. In a most recent post from one of our directors, it was evident that our national team took their lumps this summer. His introspective post was probably one of the best-communicated thoughts I've seen on the experience.
In this episode, we share our thoughts on the national program, the director's post, and where we go from here.

We recently were at the PBR Nationals at Lake Point in Emerson, Georgia. We saw some unbelievable talent, but one obvious thing was the ballpark's attitudes. You could easily pick out the players who were unselfish and who were selfish. The unselfish players shined like rockstars. They were talking the game, they had positive body language, and you gravitated towards them as you watched them on the field. So, if two opposing coaches who don't have a horse in the race notice these positive vibes...how do you think college scouts and fans see you? Here are two cents on how to master the last week of the season.

The track of a player's career is fascinating. The journey is unique to each player, but there's one pitfall that potentially could derail an upward-trending player.
In this episode, we talk about the 13U curse, the advantage of being in the bottom third, and how to avoid the pitfall.

Pitch counts suck! Yep, we said it, and here's why...
In this episode, we speak with Jordan Oseguera who is the Director of Performance and Pitching at ArmCare.com. Arm Care specializes in pitchers' health. They want to know when and how much a player can throw in a given day.
In this conversation, you're going to learn about:
why pitch counts are not a great metric
what matters in pitching recovery and how to recover faster
how you will be able to throw more and longer

With mics, cameras, and a social media handle, you can influence a group of people. This doesn't necessarily mean you're a leader. You can be someone pandering to a group of people because the algorithm rewards you for engagement. It's something to think about as influencers are starting to be labeled as leaders. In reality, they are only "influencers." They influence behavior.
So what makes a good leader?
What do they avoid?
How can you recognize an imposter?

Baseball Twitter blew up 🤯
The first start of the season, on the road, and he was cruising! Clayton Kershaw made headlines with his final bow of the game after the third out in the 7th inning of a perfect game. This caused a massive split inside the baseball community, with people calling it "a problem" and others saying it was, "100% the right move, it's a learning lesson for amateur baseball."
Where do we stand?
Listen and find out.

DEEP Into the archives, I went to find this episode.
I was editing last week trying to find a clip from the Closing Pitch and found this piece that read 'December- Recording 03.' After listening to it, I thought this was a great piece to send out for players to watch and listen on setting standards for yourself to live by. We site three situations. I hope you like the episode!
Also, we mention NFT's (non-fungible tokens). It's not investment advice!!! We're baseball people, we help run a club, we're not financial professionals.

One of my lesson clients, who I love coaching, by the way, came in frustrated. He was getting angry at his performance. It was the frustration you get when you're struggling to make an adjustment.
You're learning from your mistakes, but you're not making the fast adjustment to fix them.
I stopped the lesson to 'calm him down,' but to also figure out what was happening in his headspace. We found the route of it.

"Showcases are expensive!" "They're not worth it." "The top kids get all the looks."
There's some truth to the rumors around showcases, but we all might be viewing them all wrong. We have Evan Pratte, former power 5 D1 coach, and current National Director, discussing the untapped potential of showcases. David Birkby further expands the point with his Twitter thread on how to leverage yourself and 10x your investment.
Here's our take on baseball and softball showcases.

MLB locked out + negotiations are shaky = MASSIVE Opportunity for D1 baseball to build their fan bases.
College baseball has had a slow growth in fan adoption with the season being played in the colder months, but with spring training on pause and social media platforms, this could be a massive adoption.
We love this play for the D1 schools. It has talent, personalities, and swagger.

We're back, we're here, and we've got stories to share!
Dave and I recently went to a Perfect Game tournament in Arizona with our National Teams. This event allowed us to see our players in a different light. It quickly reminded us that stacking experiences build the psyche of a player. We also realized this lesson in our own lives. We share stories of our past and how being a part of the good experiences have been the best investment.

Deion Sanders shocked the world last month by convincing the number 1 football recruit to switch his commitment and sign with Jackson State.
Who is Jackson State?
A small FCS school in Mississippi with the head coach being HOF Deion Sanders. Welcome to the world of the NIL. The new regulation allows athletes to receive compensation based on their name, image, and likeness.
How do we feel about it? Well, we spoke about it in a previous episode with one of our friends who was a compliance officer for a division 1 school. We re-open the conversation and discuss how we truly feel about it.

PART 2 of the Deven Morgan interview is here!
In this episode, we continue the conversation with emotional validation for youth athletes. One of the best topics we reached was the binary outcome of a game. The win and the loss need to be explained to the athlete. Kids are at a biological disadvantage because their brain is not fully formed, so they're not able to evaluate abstract thought.
When we as coaches give only validation for wins and losses it puts an immediate impression on the player. We need to rethink what really matters. Is box score the ultimate tool for development guidance?
Deven disagrees, it only gives you a map of the game. It doesn't show the hustle plays, leadership moments, or even scorching line drives that were caught.
We need to rethink everything.
00:00-03:13 Introduction and Recap of Part 1
03:14-11:58 Emotional Intelligence, validation, and the youth athlete
11:58-20:57 Blending baseball data, skills of scale, progress, gamification, and emotional development
20:58-30:56 What is the goal because if you throw a rock you could probably hit a travel team
30:57-45:54 Throwing, weighted baseballs, gaining VELOCITY 🔥🔥
45:55-48:50 Closing Statments

Multi-sport athletes are near and dear to our hearts.- We loved Friday nights and hearing the crowd echo the basketball gym, but are the dual-sport athletes becoming extinct! So much so, we were three-sport athletes in high school.?
We pull up a tweet from one of our fellow contemporaries to dive into the topic.

Dave and Spike sit down to talk about the things people want. We want to have good health, save time, reduce effort, more comfort, gain praise, feel more loved, and increase status outside of financial freedom. These aspects play into our decisions and help us become better and move forward in our lives.
BUT, can it blind us and cause us to make an impulse decision we will regret?

"REJECTED!" The pleasant sound of TIM KITZROW of NBA JAM rings through my ears. As a defender, you love it, but as the three point shooter from long range you hate it.
Even though this is a video game there's a direct correlation from getting swatted down by 24x24 pixels in the shape of Shaq and getting cut from a tryout.
It sucks.
In this episode, Dave and I talk about not making teams. We also speak on players that have rejected us and went to other teams. This episode is all about getting the palm to the face and feeling like sand paper is rubbing up against your skin.
How do you feel about rejection? What's your way of developing your thick skin?

HERE'S HOW YOU CAN ATTRACT MORE OPPORTUNITY WITH LITTLE ADDITIONAL EFFORT....
Supernatural is relating to an order of existence beyond the visible; it transcends the laws of nature.
The uniform's appearance goes beyond how it looks. A first impression can last forever. This invisible agent that the uniform creates is sticky.
Think about the differences between going into your local Starbucks and a downtown college coffee shop. There's nothing wrong with either, but the vibe is different from how they dress, service, and manage the shop.
Spiker and Dave talk about the importance of the athlete's uniform and how it can provide and take the opportunity.

I've been contemplating what it means to build a community. There's a lot of responsibility from the leader, but it's the people in the community that make it great. It takes everyone...
How do you create those communities that just... you know...HAVE IT!
It seems like success breeds inside the group, positive experiences are built everyday, and it seems like the participants get better everyday.
In this episode, I explore the inner workings of starting a team with chemistry.

We've reached a point where we need to organize our episodes better. Player development is always in our minds eye. As some of you might know, we have created a new podcast called the Tiger Interview Series. This podcast is focused on in-game, in-season, and in-career development. This will be the home base for baseball and softball conversations. The Closing Pitch is moving forward with people, culture, and the winning lifestyle. We view this show as the life skills you create inside the game that can be used in your future work life. You will hear conversations on leadership, community, and communication. We are excited for the challenge of managing two shows. It will better help us share the information you are looking for! We're looking forward to having you join in on the conversations.

New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom's average fastball in 2020 was 98.6mph.
According to the New York Times, "In 2003, only one MLB pitcher threw at least 25 pitches reaching 100mph or more in that season. Only a decade later, eight pitchers hit that mark." In 2021, we could be witnessing the fastest game of baseball we have ever seen.
In this episode, we bring on Dr. Alexander Aleem, an Orthopedic Surgeon at Washington University-St. Louis. He specializes in elbows and shoulders.
We deep dive into the pitcher's arm and how players are trying to reach these milestones quicker and faster. We open the discussion around the risk and reward around chasing the elusive velocity number.
We also tackle questions on how youth and high school coaches can manage their pitchers, players deciding to train for velocity, and tackling the misconception that Tommy John's surgery helps gain velocity.
What are your thoughts around overthrowing? Should tournaments ban pitchers throw back-to-back days?

There are 3 People I want you to think about:
All these guys have one thing in common.
It's not their playing experience, it's not their knowledge of the game, and it's not their luck.
It's their ability to deliver a few key ideas that changes a persons view point. They know how to get "buy-in."
Now, before you say, well, Spiker, that's great in all, but how does that apply to me....
Let me explain...
If you're someone who has been in a leadership role you have the ability to make a difference in youth sports. Knowing the perfect strategy or the best mechanics is not what makes a strong coach.
What makes a coach memorable are those that teach the right habits, process, disciplines, attitude, character, and morals to a team.
...AND we need more of this!
The most memorable coach i've had was my 7th and 8th grad youth coach and he didn't play past high school.
Thinking about it...I don't even think he started in high school.
BUT! He made a huge difference and influenced me on creating a successful routine. He showed me what real preparation was and how to duplicate it.
Common sense fails us when we think a persons playing history is a sure sign that they will make a team successful. We need to re-think what makes a good coach.

Dave wanted the title to be Nature and/or nurture, but when listening back to the audio, I realized the conversation took more of an exciting twist than I thought. This episode is an open conversation on coaching and teaching styles. Through our own experiences as coaches, players, and instructors, the observations made by us have led us to conclude that there's a balance in managing players. The characteristics, backgrounds, and belief systems of a team starting can be wildly different. As mentors, we need to understand these differences to know when to accelerate or decelerate our teaching style. In this episode, we go over the weapons of a teacher and give the mother of all tools that will deliver immediate results if you're able to master it. Enjoy this episode of the Closing Pitch. In October 2010, I was battling for a starting position for Missouri State University. My position, second base, was taken by an All-American. Our head coach sent me to learn right field where I've never played.
Why was I in this situation?
Because Missouri State and playing for Coach Guttin was one of my primary goals coming out of high school. I was on a mission.
There was no plan B.
As we headed into the final day of the fall, Coach Guttin called me into his office and explained my situation. It was an "end-game" type of moment where he gave me an ultimatum heading into our winter training.
The pressure built to an all-time level for me with my scholarship money, potential pro-career, representing my high school, parents, and friends, we're all in jeopardy. It was potentially an imploding moment.
...And then, it didn't.
Find out how I went from being an underperforming bottom of the barrel player to the most reliable person on the field.
Here are five lockdown moves you can make when the pressure is at its highest.

I can't even.
I can't even take this.
I can't even take this conversation.
I can't even take this conversation about I can't.
Eliminate this word and the world of opportunity will open. It's not about what happens to us. It's about how we perceive the thing that happens to us. We are in control.

Have you ever played a new game with a group friends and you start having beginners luck? At some point, there's a veteran player who starts telling you all the things you can and cannot do. You ask, "Is that a rule?" They respond, "Well, it's an unwritten rule. It's the etiquette of the game, and it's a respectful thing to the other players."
You end up accepting and start trying to accommodate your game to the unwritten rule...BUT, wait a minute?! If it's not written down and you can't refer to it. Why are we following it?!
This is the basis of our conversation today. It is going against conventional thought to help outline why being an excellent unwritten rule follower prevents you from growing yourself and the game.

Some players are proactive and don't wait for directions. They need advice, but it's advice that will further advance their thinking. The top 1% of professionals in their respective fields have this trait.
A real high performer looks to build their career at any means possible, AND they will not wait for the opportunity to approach them. They take the opportunity given to them but also look for it.
Indecision is the thief of opportunity; inability to choose how to construct your day, unwillingness to see past your current goals to make bodacious ones, and forgoing expert advice to multiply it in your skills. The switch is in you being more proactive.

Do you remember in grade school when the teacher played the game telephone? Everyone gets in a line, and the teacher tells a short story. It's usually 1-2 sentences long. As your classmates relay the message, you wonder what it's going to be. You see people smiling, giggling, and it's finally your turn.
When you hear it, you look confused....is this what Ms. Deplanty said?!?
As you take a deep breath as everyone's staring at you, the teacher asks, "What was the story?"
"The banana went to a donut shop. He asked for a cup of coffee with his creme. His name was Larry."
"Rumor has it." is the game of telephone in real life. We get sucked into these stories that have characters, situations, and objects mixed-up. When we hear the story, we quickly accept it at face value. This episode is to address this notion and talk about how we get stuck in a big game of telephone without even knowing it. We love knowing secrets, we enjoy insider information, and we want to bond with our friends. At what point, however, is this detrimental to your growth when trying to reach your end-goal.
"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it."

Have you ever been excited about a project where you felt like you could take on the world?!
I've been there too.
The difference between the times I was able to deliver on this excitement, and when I ended up binge-watching my favorite show was me writing down my goals.
There are plenty of internet gurus who have told you this, but it's usually in a strict and stringy format. I don't know about you, but this makes me unexcited about my future.
In this episode we're going to go over the following:

Riding this one out solo
revisiting the Goliath mentality
how some social norms can be deceptive
the ego is a double edge sword

Price wars are when multiple players in a space compete against one another in hopes to attract more customers by providing the cheapest price in the market. It's a slippery slope as purchasing brings about price changes until the competition is priced out of the market. Status wars have the same slippery slope. How do you win? What's the better route? How do you separate yourself? The best companies in the world are driven by giving more value than what they charge. They are consumed by not making the cheapest product, but the best product. The sequential internet guru...
The person who speaks about skills you need to have, but has never applied them at a capacity to see if they work.
We don't want to be those guys and never will be. When approaching this topic we're coming from a place of experience. These are skills we have learned from our encounters and conversations from the past 10 years of helping build a national club.
These skills can easily be applied in any setting or place. Here are six skills that we have found to built strong relationships in your organization or community.

First impressions are not easy, but what's even harder are the tough conversations.
The similarities between first impressions and tough conversations is understanding the other persons point of view. Without being a cliche and just blurting out, "IT'S EMPATHY!" We're going to navigate our original struggles with starting the unpleasant conversations and how respect plays a huge factor while delivering an uneasy conversation about playing time or being cut. Here are the "Do's" and “Do-not's" of tough conversations.

I'll admit it, our team trash talks, BUT that's not the point. The reason for this episode is to give you mental weapons to neutralize and succeed over someone who is talking trash in front of you or even behind your back. You have to know why they're doing it....so don't take it personal, because that's exactly what they want you to do. They don't care if they're the bad guy.

This bonus episode felt right. We're in the middle of the summer and people are wondering how do players get picked up. Here is a recording I did with a scout who knows what it takes.
Grading tools, players makeup, intangibles, team chemistry...this is how scouts think. Taking everything in consideration Torre Tyson explains his method behind finding the next Derek Jeter and Albert Pujols. He gives sound advice on how you should approach recruiting. Take a deep breath, relax, because this will give you great insight on how you should be approaching the game.

Episode 26
Has a player ever told you that “I am too busy to do that” or “I don’t have enough time”? These phrases have been used by everyone, but how do you limit yourself or players from using those phrases? In this episode Spiker and Dave talk about overcoming poor time management as a person and baseball player. We also discuss college recruiting and how the player should be the main enforcer when trying to get a scholarship. Spiker mentions that success is not selfish, and Dave explains how there are two types of people that will help or hurt your success. We both mention that changing the way you think about things could change how you think and perform. Also, Intern Todd makes another appearance in this episode. He asks a question regarding how to rephrase “I am too busy to do that.”

I'm going solo on this episode. I want to jump into our TAG LINE: People, culture, and HOW TO CREATE A WINNING LIFESTYLE. I don't have all the answers, but this is my mission for this show. It's to deliver the things that have worked and haven't worked for me in my playing career. It also provides insight into what has worked for our organization. Aaron Jaworowski is our president, and an observation I made early on, was his ability to get tasks done. He worked towards his goals through his everyday tasks. In this episode, I want to talk about the differences between tasks and goals. -----GET NOTIFIED WHEN WE UPLOAD A NEW EPISODE! How well do you know your employees, teammates, staff, players, or people? Are you able to develop the desired relationship where you can get things done? One of the youngest managers to ever coach a minor league game is now the minor league coordinator for an MLB organization and there's a good reason. He is one of the best at developing a relationship from the very start. He is also very well disciplined when it comes to understanding and growing with trends. He made a name for himself in college when he wrote a thesis on data management in baseball organizations.
The best part about this whole story is Jason never played a professional game in his life and he now plays a major role in one of the best minor league systems in the MLB. How did he do it? We go into his background and how he created this dream scenario of having a job in sports.

We want to be perfect and present ourselves in a respectable form. Sometimes we get in our own way and we elect not to take the path. A situation that could be the best thing for you ends up being a regrettable moment. Dave shares his side of cold calling and gives you insight on how he overcame it. Let me know if this story resonates with you. A small, weak, unexpecting character with determination rises from the ranks and finds himself or herself amid in front of a giant entity. The battle is well fought with many spectacular scenes. In an unforeseen moment, the unexpecting character finds the blow that brings him to victory. We all love this story, but is this an accurate depiction of those who have winning longevity? Do they repeat this story in their life? What is their mindset going into their most significant battles?

Spiker received a text message late at night from a Tiger player. In this episode, we are going to the underbelly of the Rawlings Tigers and giving you an inside look into a conversation that Spiker and Dave have on an annual basis with their players. Below you will find the original text message from their player and how the show is tailored.
Questions:
First I was wondering about how you would manage the blast. I got the blast sensor and was wondering how you would recommend using it.
Would you use it every time you hit or like once a week. Also, what stats are the most important to you and what should I watch for on the sensor?
Second, I’m and 8th grader and 2 goals that I’ve had for a while now are making the varsity team as a freshman and making the black team for the tigers. What should I do for both my physical and mental game to make sure I’m able to achieve this goal?
Third, I now baseball is extremely mental. How would you recommend training the mental parts of the game? I work very hard on the physical side, but I notice that my mental game is a little underdeveloped.
Fourth, baseball is a game where you will make mistakes. If I make a mistake I’m a tryout, how do I turn the mistake into a good impression? What are your best tips for body language?
Lastly, I was watching a documentary on Tom Brady, and I realized how clutch he was. How do you become clutch? What type of mindset do you have to have? Can you become clutch, or is it just something you have or don’t have (can it be worked on and improved)?

In reality though we can find its' origin in our own insecurities and belief systems. In this episode Spiker and Dave talk about insecurities. We received a Facebook message from Jon Handy out of California and he brought up some interesting points on tech. The conversation triggered an idea for us. I don't know about you, but speaking in front people for the first time is terrifying! But, we all have these kinds of fears. We even have fears of leaving a community we've been a part of for a long time. We're afraid to branch out because it's all we know at the time. We have fallen a custom to the situation.
What if I told you, you need to lean into that fear? The fear is a calling card for your to move forward. In this episode, we talk about this weird feeling we get when we're about to reach the brink of something good.

Dreams weigh more than excuses, but we easily give up on our dreams because we face a barrier. How do you build a tolerance and perseverance to get past those dead zones? Mount Everest is the pinnacle of any climber. There's a spot in the climb where a climber has a choice: Should they head back down the mountain or risk their life for the chance to reach the peak. Our dreams are similar to this climb. We have to have the right support system, mindset, and training.

Are you in high school? Or, if you're the same age as us, do you remember high school? What's the first word that pops into your mind...1...2...3.....GO! Weird, awkward, hard, different.
When I think about this time in my life. I think of myself as an awkward baby giraffe. Have you ever seen this animal run. No?....go ahead, I will wait. YouTube it right now. You will be amused.
This is literally how I felt. I thought I was an adult, I tried to act like an adult, BUT! I was not even close to knowing who are really was and I was very naive.
In this episode, we talk about this awkward time, but we also speak on what makes us great as individuals. We need to embrace our weird. This is our greatest strength.
