The IPFS podcast focuses on the adoption of peer to peer technology in practical real world use cases.

Here’s Episode 1 where we talk about the difference between Filecoin and IPFS and discuss some ‘Awesome IPFS’ tools.

This podcast is labelled B - BEGINNER and requires no prior knowledge or deep understanding of technology. It would be helpful to have listened to episode 0 of the IPFS Podcast however and to look through the links below for any jargon or terminology you didn't understand.. Come along with us as we go on this journey and learn together!

Here are some notes for your easy reference:

Difference between Filecoin & IPFS: First, it is important to understand that Filecoin is built on top of IPFS. It’s like the icing on the cake. You can have cake without icing but not icing without cake!

Filecoin is a storage market with tokens that are used to trade, that leverages the underlying functionality provided by the interplanetary File System. Users do not need to interact with Filecoin in order to use IPFS. You could share your house with a friend without having them pay rent or you could rent out that room for money, airbnb style. What you need is the house and willingness to share it!

Filecoin and IPFS are complementary protocols for storing and sharing data (rather than a room or space in the house with the airbnb example). You don’t need to use them together but they work together in what we call the ‘decentralised web’. The internet that we all own together.

IPFS is the FREE and open-source network stack protocol that allows users to store and transfer data with each other. IPFS users keep data on the network by pinning it on their own hardware, to a third-party cloud service (known as Pinning Services), or through community schemes where a group of individual IPFS users share resources to ensure the content remains live (like for example - a school!)

Filecoin is a crypto economic incentive mechanism that allows users to trade long-term distributed storage at competitive prices through a marketplace of storage nodes, while maintaining the efficiency and resiliency provided by the IPFS network.
