He has been one of the many healthcare workers who have been on the frontlines during the COVID-19 Crisis in America working to keep those inflicted with the illness safe. A witness to the heartbreaking conditions created by the pandemic, Glenn co-authored a moving piece titled “Not Dying Alone - Modern Compassionate Care in the COVID-19 Pandemic” which was recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Glenn has subsequently been featured by a number of media outlets, including CNN, among others.

Prior to entering the medical field Glenn was a standout multi-sport athlete in high school and played Defensive Back at Princeton University. He also holds the slightly less enviable title of being Ken’s college roommate his Senior Year. With a friendship that has spanned nearly 13 years, Glenn and Ken broach a topic previously undiscussed between the two and have an open conversation about race and racism in America. This special conversation is motivated by the traumatic passing of George Floyd and the state of civil unrest that has unused and was done in an attempt to help further the conversation in hopes of creating understanding. To that end, Glenn kindly joins the show to share his experience growing up as a black man in today’s United States and how after becoming a husband and father, believes it’s more imperative than ever that we engage in conversation and work jointly towards a brighter future.

We hope this conversation might help you expand your understanding of the issue of race in America and offer a first hand perspective as to why there is still much work to be done.

The creator of Triphasic Training joins the show for a wide ranging talk that quickly became one of my favorite conversations. Cal is the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at the University of Minnesota for multiple sports including Hockey, Track & Field and Basketball among others. With a track record of coaching numerous collegiate, olympic and world champions he also today operates as the head strength and conditioning coach for Team USA Women’s Hockey. An author of several training books, Cal is best known for his revolutionary sports performance book Triphasic Training. His methodologies have been adopted and implemented at the highest levels of sport and across countless disciplines.

Today he shares the method to his madness and the keys to his success. The importance of research, but the need for validation in the field. How and why physical and emotional stress are cumulative. Why contrary to popular belief it’s better to back off on days where you’re not 100% and why toughing it out can increase your odds of leaving you injured.

We discuss the misconceptions around building an aerobic base. Why fasted cardio is addicting and that’s a good thing. Tips that you can try tomorrow to improve your morning routine to feel lasting physical, emotional and health benefits. The reason that your feet are the key to unlocking untapped sports and performance potential and an introduction to the Spring Ankle Complex. The role of the big toe in activating your glutes.

Cal provides an explanation of triphasic training and how to apply it in the weight room. He shares the many benefits that go far beyond strength and conditioning and life saving applications of the training methodology you probably haven’t considered. We cover a more advanced technique of oscillatory reps to increase adaption at points of weakness. His approach to peaking athletes for competition and why the same training is safe for your kids. As a parent, Cal also shares the approach he talked with his own kids to fuel their passion and give them the tools to succeed without causing burnout. Finished with the best possible exercise one can do.

If it feels like the countless training programs, or diets you’ve tried are not getting you to where you want to be. According to Christian, the program your choosing might not be broken, it just might not be the right approach for your brain chemistry.

Today’s guest Christian Thibaudeau introduces listeners to his neurotyping system. An alternative approach to selecting the best suited programming, nutrition and supplement regime based on an individual's neurological traits. Christian explains how they perform the Neurotype testing. The role of neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin and adrenaline and how they impact the way we experience and interact with the outside world. How this directly impacts the way you respond to training.

Christian pulls no punches and explains why “your kids suck and it’s your fault”. The risk of dopamine overstimulation. They way in which individuals respond to neurotransmitters differently and why an individual may be more receptive to one verse the other. His team’s approach to testing, realistic limitations and why the term pseudoscience shouldn’t send you running for the hills.

He shares how this individual variance expresses itself in terms of an individual athlete’s response to types of training. Why motivation is a key determinant of success, but we have to start with identifying the correct catalysts. An explanation for why some individuals truly lack empathy, but aren’t necessarily bad people. The neurotransmitter most closely linked with superior athletic ability and why creativity is a key supplemental environmental ingredient. The true role of stress, and it’s many physiological and neurological implications.

Lastly, Chris gives a brief overview of his Neurotyping classifications and what traits are most closely aligned with the individuals who fall into the subsequent categories.

What do pull ups and philosophy have in common? As we learn in today’s episode, apparently a lot. Current world record holder for the most pull ups in one minute Adam Sandel joins the show. This man has done 68 pull ups in one minute folks. While he may moonlight as the best pull up competitor in the world, his day job is educating the bright minds of Harvard University about the teachings of Aristotle and Socrates. With such an incredibly unique background I was curious to find out just what it was about pull ups that grabbed Adam’s interest and set him on his quest of utter world domination. Okay, that’s a bit much but it’s incredible folks.

Adam discusses the connection between fitness and philosophy. Why Plato and Socrates are in many ways similar to some of the best self-help books we have today. The one question Adam asks himself to keep himself grounded during his quest for achievement and why it’s important to trust the process. We discuss adversity and what it’s like having what was thought to be a successful world record attempt denied.

A former baseball player, Adam shares how he got into pull ups. His powerlifting background at Oxford University. His transition into world record attempts and how training with a current world record holder and friendly competitors was one of the best things he could have done.

For those trying to improve their pull ups, he shares some tips and tricks that he’s picked up along the way and provides an overview of his preferred style of workout and how you can access it. He reflects on how breakthroughs can happen in the blink of an eye and how you can never be sure when or why they happen. He leaves with parting advice to getting success and achieving goals.

Today’s show is a peek into the mindset it takes to become an Olympic and World Champion. Adam had an incredible collegiate and ultimately professional athletic career that resulted in two consecutive Olympic podiums and 3 total Olympics. He shares with us his journey from being a multi-sport high school all-american to selecting an Ivy League University over perennial southern sports powerhouse programs. We discuss the balancing act that was playing two Division 1 sports and the self-confidence it took to be unwavering in his commitment to excel at both. The winning of a national championship and how the decision to pursue a professional shot putting career and an Olympic dream almost didn’t happen.

A recurring theme throughout this show, Adam recounts how taking a bet on himself may have seemed the riskier choice but the one he had to make. He shares the attributes that set him apart as a young athlete and the evolution of his source of motivation that would ultimately propel him to Olympic champion. Reflecting back on the source of his determination, we talk about the impact his father had on his own success and how he as a father himself now thinks about setting his kids up to have the tools and mindset for success. Subsequently we have a candid conversation about the role adversity plays and the extent that it’s a requisite to achieve your full potential.

One to chart his own path, Adam explains why having hopes and dreams is not enough to get you to your goals and the term “Olympic Hopeful” requires revision. He describes his belief in taking action and why you have to be willing to push the boundaries if your goal is to be uncommon. The theme of extraordinary work ethic permeates throughout the conversation, but Adam shares how in a sport won and lost by inches he explored both physical and psychological to reach his peak performance. Listeners get to hear about his eccentric sports psychologist and his experience with visualization to get him into an ideal mental state to perform.

Pratik shares the demands of providing nutritional guidance for one of the preeminent teams in the NFL. With the unique energy demands of NFL caliber athletes, Pratik takes us through what it’s like to train and educate an NFL roster that in the offseason totals over 90 players. Working with the Giants for the past 3 seasons, Pratik has brought a wealth of experience to the position from his previous stops as the Director of Sports Nutrition at the University of Oregon and as a Sports Dietician at Michigan State University.

In today’s show, Pratik describes his approach to educating the Giants players as to how to make sound nutritional decisions that will fuel the energy demands of these elite athletes throughout the season. With players coming from a diverse background with regard to their nutritional education, the approach tends to be as diverse as the demands of their diets. We talk at a high level how Sports Performance needs differ from those of standard dietary needs and his approach to analyzing what each player requires.

We discuss the ever popular post-workout shake and how what you’ve probably been told about Creatine is wrong. Pratik breaks down when you should take it, the foundational supplements that are proven to make a difference and why this should only be one part of a larger overall strategy to maximizing growth and improved performance. He provides an introduction to Nootropics and some of the proven supplements that can help increase cognitive performance. Why 3rd party testing is critical and the approved bodies you can look to understand if what you’re taking is safe for competition.

For the non-NFL listeners, Pratik shares what a well rounded diet should look like for those still training for performance. The role of biomarkers and how it can help you make more informed decisions about your diet. The importance of hydration and why minerals are a key component. How to approach nutrition in the 48 hours before a competition. Regardless of lifestyle diets, the foundational caloric principles of how you get lean. Tactics to get the most out of your nutritional intake. As well as the many factors that make diet needs so individualized.

World Series Champion, 2016 All Star Game MVP, 4 time Gold Glove Winner and Silver Slugger winner Eric Hosmer joins the show. Eric, the third overall pick by the Kansas City Royals in 2008, shares a glimpse of the routines and approach that lead to him being selected directly out of high school and rising to become one of the best first baseman in all of Major League Baseball. Going into his 10th Major League season, Eric has played professionally for the Kansas City Royals from 2011 - 2017 and has played for the San Diego Padres since 2018.

In today’s show, we discuss how Eric is staying focused during quarantine. Drafted right out of high school, he shares his thoughts on the specialization of young athletes and his own experience with making the decision due in large part for the need to play in high school showcases. He reflects on his experience deciding between going to college vs. straight to the MLB draft and how today that process is very different for young players. We also get to hear what it’s like to come up through the minor league system.

We learn how critical routine is in his own approach to the game, but gain a glimpse as to how the travel and crazy game schedule makes maintaining any sort of normalcy especially difficult. To battle the demands of the marathon MLB season, Eric identifies sleep as one of the most critical factors to maintaining his performance. As he’s progressed in his career he shares how his approach and investment in recovery has changed over time.

Eric offers a detailed view of what Game Day looks like, including: pre-game hitting routine, the real role of a hitting coach, why the first baseman is the most popular guy on the field, and the art of the mid-game conversation. He talks about the need to constantly improve. Why being able to make adjustments on the fly is what separates the great players from the rest. The resilient mindset he employs to deal with the ups and downs of baseball and how he settles into high pressure situations in big games. What it was like to win a world series and how he and his teammates keep their sanity during an MLB season.

Elite Sport Sleep Coach and author Nick Littlehales has been helping athletes and teams competing in the world’s most competitive leagues improve their performance through sleep for over 20 years. With the necessity of sleep transcending any one individual sport he’s worked with an incredible list of elite clients that include Christiano Ronaldo, British Cycling, Team Sky (Tour De France), Formula 1 Racers, NFL Players, numerous Premier League Soccer teams and beyond. Focused on redefining human recovery, his goal is to provide elite athletes and individuals with a simple and achievable technique that can be applied to improve sleep. His book Sleep, which has made the topic of improving sleep and the quality of your life approachable and applicable.

Today, his technique is known as the R90 Technique and Nick introduces listeners to the first of the 7 Key Sleep Recovery Indicators. These indicators when addressed can have a profound impact on improving sleep. We discuss the role of the Circadian Rhythm and how in present day society we’re finding new and inventive ways to mess this up. The impact of your chronotype and how being an “owl” or a “lark” can have a substantial impact on your optimal routine. The idea that we should be paying closer attention to sleep cycles, rather than just a broad recommendation of hours per night. Why people not getting the appropriate levels of recovery through sleep is preventing them from achieving their personal best. The way in which our brain and body function are completely synced to this planet. Why sleep is the last part of your day that you should sacrifice and how counterintuitively we can actually do more by doing less.

Speaking to sport and beyond Nick attests that sleep quite frankly creates more resilient human beings. When looking at training for sport, alongside training and nutrition sleep needs to be considered an equal, if not prioritized as the most critical of the three pillars of athletic success. Amidst this albeit slow, yet increasing awareness within sport of the impact of sleep he warns to be wary of the flood of technologies hitting the market promising to help improve the natural practice. He expands as to why sleep is something that we should be able to do naturally if we can only get out of our own way. He further explains why Blue Light is undeservedly getting a bad rap and how in actuality it is when of the greatest resources humans have at their disposal.

He recounts his experience working with British Cycling as part of their goal to put a Brit atop the podium of the Tour De France within 5 years through the revolutionary approach of aggregated marginal gains. How sleep became one of the many underserved areas where the team could find an overlooked advantage and the extent that he and the performance staff for Team Sky would go to in order to optimize the sleep environment for riders when traveling and subsequent success and domination by the team that followed.

We wrap up discussing the impact of time zones on one of his NFL clients. The underappreciated role natural light plays in our lives and wellbeing. Lastly, sure to spark a number of uncomfortable conversations between couples everywhere, he explains why humans can sleep anywhere in any environment, but they were never meant to sleep together.

President and founder of Sport Science Lab, Gavin MacMillan is among the foremost thought leaders on sports performance and recovery. With his entire approach based in scientific research, his team has long been on the cutting edge of training and sports performance and often flies in the face of traditional training approaches. Closing in on nearly 20 years in the profession he has trained some of the biggest names in the worlds biggest sports. From world champions in boxing and MMA to All-NFL Players and NBA Slam Dunk Champions, the leagues and list of players of which his team has worked with is too long to recount. If it were up to him, that would be the last measuring stick by which he’d like to be measured. Gavin has attained a loyal following with his ruthless commitment to focusing on the requisite biochemanics and the specific needs of an athletes sport above all else. He has also garnered a reputation as one of the leaders in sports recovery due to his team’s stellar track record of helping athletes of all levels recover from catastrophic sports injuries return to their sport, often with a higher level of athleticism than which they originally possessed.

In today’s show, he shares why he believes there needs to be a governing body of sports science in the United States to ensure athletes are receiving proper guidance and coaching. Educates me on why “training philosophies” are worthless and the need for training principles rooted in scientific research. We discuss the work of Professor Yuri Verkhoshansky and why a study of that scope and magnitude will never be replicated again. Breaks down the anatomical justification as to why heavy maximal lifting negates speed. The importance of training “cyclically”. Why strength and conditioning coaches should delineate sports into “below body weight”, “body weight” and above “body weight”. His analysis as to why the rapid rise of soft tissue and ligament injuries over the last few decades and why historically they didn’t exist. We spend a bit of time reminiscing about my summer training at the gym one summer and the tall tales of Marv Marinovich.

With regard to his stellar track record in terms of athlete recovery, he details why he believes his team is successful and their approach to getting athletes back on the field. We discuss balance work and the need for training on hard surfaces. How his team helped the Toyota Cheetahs in South Africa reduce their injury rates and avoid relegation. The need to focus on Power vs. Force. Why “altitude” training masks are stupid. George St. Pierre rehab experience that lead to winning back the championship. Why acl and injuries should not be a time-based protocol and where the current tests for return to play presently fall short in assessing an athlete’s preparedness. His immediate recommendations for what people can start doing to train more effectively for sport in the weight room. The need for kids to avoid early specialization and focus on biomechanics first. Finally his parting thoughts on his views on being open to knew ideas and having a willingness to learn from those who have found success.

Sleep expert Dr. Wendy Troxel is a Senior Behavioral and Social Scientist at the RAND Corporation and Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. She is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in behavioral treatments for insomnia and other sleep disorders and has been interviewed and featured on Good Morning America, CBS Sunday Morning, the Wall Street Journal and New York Times among others. She’s given two TEDx talks. The first on the impact of early start times on adolescent sleep and development. Her most recent talk dove into her study of how relationships impact our sleep. In today's show Dr. Troxel explains why it’s a fools errand to try and pigeon hole the role of sleep as it permeates across all aspects of our lives in ways that the medical community at large is still only beginning to understand. She discusses that while sleep study is rapidly growing there's a need to study sleep “in the wild” as often the studies being conducted in the laboratory are not representative of the environment we as individuals and partners actually sleep. Dr. Troxel discusses how the roles we play can increase our vigilance and disrupt our sleep. The need to create a routine to calm our evolutionary default to vigilance and create an environment for sleep. What we can do to help ourselves be physiologically prepared to sleep. Some best practices that you can integrate into your night time routine. How much trust we should put in today’s sleep trackers. The need for good quality sleep vs. simply an hourly recommendation. The importance of how relationships impact sleep and how critical sleep is to the quality of your relationships. Why our understanding of adolescent sleep means we need to rethink what are healthy school start times for our kids.

What it’s like working with PGA pros on tour and how his work with golfers helps pave the way for them to get out of their own head and access skill. The idea that “thoughts don’t hit golf shots”. How the “anxiety gap” can cause us to underperform in the present due to fear of events that haven’t yet occurred in the future.
