Aaron played local football in and around the area but says he is having the best of times after becoming involved with Whitstable Town Youth. He is the manager/coach of one of 30 teams registered at the club. At Belmont Banter we like to feature the youth so that they can let all the youngsters in the area know just what is happening at Whitstable Town.
Arron is often down at the club, particularly on a Saturday when the first team have a game. He is usually joined by wife Bo and his daughters Jess and Grace as the whole family love their football. Jess plays for WTFC U12’ Girls which is the team managed and coached by Aaron, Jess is also registered with the WTFCU12’ Boys. Arron’s enthusiasm shines through as he talks about how proud he is that Jess who has scored 26 goals for the Girls U12’s so far this season and Jess has made the big step up to play with the U12’s Boys team.

Martin, one of very few players who was rewarded with a testimonial by Whitstable Town, he played almost his whole career at Whitstable. Now a coach of WTFC Reserves; Martin Mills has some great stories to tell about many local players and managers over the last 30-40 years or so. His stand out player in local football was Ernie Batten, chairman of Sheppey United when asked about his choice Martin’s reply was because of the way he read the game, he had so much time on the ball and scanned the game looking at the whole ’picture’… it’s another great listen from Belmont Banter

Peter is such a well know voice as far as local radio is concerned as you will have heard hi reporting on local football in KENT at all levels and cricket, covering Kent Cricket Club all over the country for the B.B/C. Peters connection with football and sport in general started when he was about elven when his grandfather took him to watch West Ham who beat Spurs 3-0. A few days later his grandfather took him to watch the opening game of the 1966 World Cup England v Uruguay at Wembley which Peter says was a very boring 0-0 draw. Peters football skills he discovered were verbal, behind the mike, not with the ball at his feet. Like a lot of broadcasters, he honed his skills on Hospital Radio, then worked for Invicta Gold. He has commented at every Test Match Ground in the Country and two FA VASE Cup Finales, and there is still more to tell… Much more…it’s another great listen from Belmont Banter

DECEMBER 12th 2021: Belmont Banter Episode 91 KEVIN SUGRUE Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
Kevin started off in football with aspirations of becoming a footballer but a sending off by a teacher in a school game brought a halt to his football when he was fourteen. He started again after he left school at about seventeen and played for the district side. The years not playing meant that others were now better than he was and ever the organiser, at nineteen Kevin started running teams. His first job on leaving school was for the council and he found himself running the sports department, says he was the blue eyed boy, and started Southwark Sports but that changed when the councils merged. Kevin moved to Beckenham took a few of the boys with him as part of Beckenham Town, the remainder who were Southwark Sports which became Dulwich Hamlet. He says they were ahead of Chelsea and all the other as they were to first club to have a ‘pathway to the first team ‘says Beckenham was the start of the Academy’s.

Mike played in goal wearing glasses when he was very young, then changed to contact lenses when he was a bit older. But apart from school football and playing with his mates Mike’s real love was when his dad finally gave into his persistent request to go and watch Gillingham. In time Mike’s other love became Arsenal after he persuaded his Dad to take him to a match. As it turned he had a relation who lived close to the ground and they were able to park a short distance from Highbury and walk to the ground. Mike’s football came to an end after he developed a stomach ulcer which burst, and he stopped playing football all together. This turned into a passion for radio, more to the point football on the radio which became not only Mike’s hobby but turned into a part time career for him as he followed ‘The MEDWAY BEARS Ice Hockey Team’ and reported from almost every ground in Kent and many further afield. Mike tells some great stories, one when he followed Whitstable Town to North Ferriby FC, another when he followed DEAL TOWN all the way to WEMBLY. Mike has also reported on Cricket, The OPEN GOLF and Superbikes from BRANDS HATCH in a long radio career.

John moved from London to the Medway area when he was eleven and started playing football with his mate’s but was soon playing for Gravesend Spartans and was picked for Kent Schools which John says was a really a good time. At fifteen he joined Gravesend and Northfleet …now EBSFLEET they offered him a place of the PACE scheme, similar todays Academy set up. He was picked for the first team at seventeen, in his first season he scored ten goals in twenty starts and won the FA Trophy at the old Wembley. During that sixteen to eighteen period, he was loaned out, the first was at Whitstable Town, (John scored on his debut) In his second loan spell was also at Town, then went onto Margate. John then drew interest from Peterborough United. As he was driving up he discovered that Bristol were also interested so he ended up there. John has played for a number of club, Bristol City came in for him and he signed for them. John played for Barnett, and others including Dagenham & Redbridge and Lincoln City and then Portsmouth before moving back to Kent where he now plays for Gillingham FC. John puts the record straight behind him crashing his car days after he moved to Bristol and the Sky Sports ‘chair on the Bus’ story… After John hangs his boots up which he says is not anytime soon he wants to get into management currently he is taking his UAFA B coaching badges and spent five years studying for his business degree: It’s another great listen from Belmont Banter…

At a young age Andy Thomas Started out playing for the Scouts at Swanley, the was a part of Kent that was to feature strongly in his football journey. From there he played for the team at the Bank where he worked, at that time a lot of the branches had their own teams representing the branch. At the branch were Andy worked they had a very successful team; coming first in a tournament out of 80 odd branches. Then he decided wanted to push himself and play football at a higher level, Andy played for Alma Swanley for a couple of seasons then moved on to Cray Wanderers. At training he picked up a bad injury and struggled to get into the Cray side and moved to Swanley Town F.C. who played in the London Spartan league. His injury cut his football career short, then taking up Vets football until his son Will expressed an interest and like all Dad’s he got more and more involved. Taking on one of the teams along with one of the other Dad’s they were very successful Staplehurst Monarchs. So much so that his exploits in management came to the attention of Maidstone Utd right at the time they moved to the Gallagher Stadium where to this day he runs Maidstone United’s U18’s... It’s another great listen from Belmont Banter.

JASON LILLIS ‘The Manager’ Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
Janson Lillis; now a full time coach at Gillingham Football Club says that his coaching and management career started in the most bazar of fashions, he took over a club at half time after the manager was sacked during the game. This was first taste of management; then Jason took on as the manager of Herne Bay where he stayed for three years. He then took a couple of years away from football saying he ‘fell out of love with the game’ until encouraged by his wife they went to watch match at Corinthians. After the game he ended up at Lordswood Social Club close to where he lives. There was meeting going on and he was asked to go and have a chat with the committee ended up as manager of Lordswood FC. Then when Nicky Southall took over as Whitstable Town manager Jason joined him as coach, had a great run in the FA Vase reaching the last sixteen, but did not agree with those in charge at the time. He then joined Neil Cugley at Folkestone as coach winning promotion and bringing in some really good players. Jason next went to coach in America before returning to the UK and taking up the post as First Team Coach at Gillingham Football Club: It’s another great listen from Belmont Banter.

OCTOBER 24th 2021: Belmont Banter Episode 84 STEVEN LLOYD Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
At the age of ten Steven was scouted by QPR where he spent two years before being signed by Millwall on a Youth Contract. When it came to the end he was released, “let go” was the term they used and he says it was hard to come to terms with at such a young age. He then joined Sturry Blues before meeting up with a couple of friends and joining Herne Bay Youth, it was not long before he was in Herne Bay Reserves but it was not long before he was picked for the first team and made his First Team debut at the age of fifteen. Playing as a centre back it was not long before he was approached by Ramsgate who were flying high in the old Kent League but decided to stay at the Bay. Stephen then joined Whitstable Town and played under five or six different managers as Town went through a difficult time. Then had a spell back at the Bay then back to Whitstable, before ending his time in football in his late twenties when he changed careers and joined the Met Police. It’s another great listen from Belmont Banter.

You have listened to Tommy the Player and Tommy the Manager and Tommy the VASE RUN which were the first three of four parts of the football journey of Tommy Sampson. We now have PART FOUR Tommy Sampson: The Stroke: ‘Three Seconds that changed his life’. Amazingly Tommy’s first words to Belmont Banter were: “I was blessed, truly as I was very, very lucky that I still retained the power of speech” however he goes on to say how he could not have survived these last fourteen years without the unfailing support of his wife Sandy. “We have fought, we have argued and I have been in the deepest darkest bouts of depression; we have called each other names, none of which I am proud of; but she has been by my side all the way. I have fought this evil disease with every ounce of strength and I am thankful to Sandy and all the friends who have supported me along the way.” It’s another great listen from Belmont Banter.

The early years for Jake were playing with his brother using two dustbins and a scaffold board for a goal around where he lived in Hales Place. He played school and district football until the age of eleven when he was picked up by Wimbledon FC after taking part in a trial at Kennington FC. He stayed at Wimbledon until he was released at sixteen and the disappointment knocked his confidence until he joined the Kent side, which he says he…” walked into”. He then played at Littlebourne FC and Canterbury U18’s for two years up until at nineteen, he then decided to take a year out and just played Sunday football. Jake saying that the ‘disappointment of not progressing affected him for years and at one stage he received twelve yellow cards in one season’. He then joined Whitstable Town playing in the reserves under the then manager Simon Kay for a year before being asked to join the first team where Marc Seager was manager. Saying that… ‘Simon installed confidence in him and ‘Seags’ was a great man manager, the two of them brought out the best in me’. I had those great three seasons or so, Seags left and my form dropped off. He tells a great story about an end of season trip to Spain when he was at Town, leaving out some of the more ’interesting’ bits. Simon Halsey who was by then Herne Bay manager asked him to join them where he stayed for a season and a half. He then joined Canterbury City for nearly three years which he enjoyed. He then joined Deal Town for a while then finished up his football at Deal Sports which he said he enjoyed on a par with his time at Whitstable but added, that it was just with his mates, it was fun…Check it out; even if you’re not involved in WTFC it’s another great listen from Belmont Banter Podcast.

SEPTEMBER 26th 2021: Belmont Banter Episode 80 GARY LOCKYER: Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.Gary Lockyer. Like most young lads Gary started playing with football with his mates, at the age of nine one of his friends invited him along to Kennington Juniors (Near Ashford) which was local to Gary. He Stayed with them until U13. During this period, he played in the Kent Youth sides all through his junior career. After leaving Kennington he joined Gravesend and Northfleet (Now Ebbsfleet) Whilst trying to find his feet in football he went to a soccer school game and was spotted by Jimmy Ward who was manager of Ramsgate at the time, He stayed nearly two years but found the level a bit too much for him as he was still in his early teens. As part of his development Jim Ward sent on loan to a couple of Kent clubs before, plus he had trials at Charlton and Aldershot, he later concedes that if he had the right attitude back then things could have been different. He had a very successful five-year spell at Lydd FC, before re-joining his boyhood club Kennington FC where he is to this day, after back to back promotions with Kennington FC reaching the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division. TOMMY SAMPSON the MANAGER: Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.Tommy Sampson who had a very successful playing career hung up his boots well into his thirties, saying "My knee had gone, well in truth they had gone years before but I loved playing and kept going as long as I could.” SHEPPY UNITED came calling and offered Tommy his first taste of management. From there he moved onto HERNE BAY, then to DEAL TOWN, with whom he won the prestigious FA VASE at WEMBLEY. There were other clubs as well, Tommy says he never had an interview for a Management job, if he was wanted fine, if not he was not going to sit through an interview. But the move from the Bay to Deal was the one that has always been shrouded in controversy, here Tommy sets the record straight and the way events unfolded were not as it seemed. This week we have Ben Jennings who is now heavily involved with Whitstable Town, primarily the youth but today is also involved in the first team, infect in every aspect of the cub. He tells us he did not take football seriously when he was very young, but the at U10’s while he was at Faversham’s Abbey School he started to enjoy football. Then had a few years at Faversham Town until aged sixteen he fell out of love with football and girls became the big thing in his life. For the last ten years’ Ben’s life went on around the youth at Whitstable Town; primarily because of his son’s desire to play local football. Until today when he at times has devoted four out of five evening during the week days then ferrying his and other parent’s children to matches on weekends. This week we have Will Graham who tells us about his dad’s long connection with Tyler Hill and how his football career was cut short by injury, how he then got into coaching and lots more besides. Will mentions lots of players and managers from his playing days and how his life is now taken up with coaching the youth, which is his passion. Will goes on to tell us how a phone call from a friend ended up with him doing a bit of scouting as a favour which in turn has turned into his business… Elite Premier Scouting. His connection with Whitstable Town football club has gone full circle since his playing days he coached for Town and tells us that Tyler Hill Youth has recently aligned themselves to Whitstable Town which he feels will be good for both parties. AUGUST 8 2021: Belmont Banter Episode 74 Gary Carter…the Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
This week we have Gary Carter who is the youth team manager for the Whitstable Town U13 Boys with us on Belmont Banter as we learn about Gary’s family involvement with the club and I do mean ‘the whole Carter family’. It started after his career in local and Sunday football came to an end but he felt he had to give back to the game he loves. Like a lot of fathers with football mad son’s he took Archie to a youth training session where then coming up for eight decided he wanted to play football at Whitstable. As son Archie’s interest grew Gary became more and more involved in Whitstable’s Youth section and was offered the opportunity to take his coaching badges. He started with the same group of boys that Archie was with; beginning with the U8’s through to today where Gary runs the girls U12’s and boys U13’s. This led to him becoming involved with the first team after the youth section merged with the main club which now boasts 27 teams from youth to senior (and counting). His wife Mandy is the registration secretary for the junior club responsible for almost twenty girls and boy’s teams in the youth section. Daughter Abbey who manages the girls U10’has also just started ‘shadowing’ the club’s physio Alice at training and on match days as she has chosen sports science and sports phycology as her career. It really is a family affair.

AUGUST 1 2021: Belmont Banter Episode 73 Carl Laraman…the Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.Delighted that this week we have former Charlton and Arsenal Coach Carl Laraman with us on Belmont Banter as he takes us on his football journey which started in Australia. At the age of eight Carl’s parents relocated to the UK setting up home in Luton not far from Chatham where vat school he played football for the first time as at that time sport in Australia was all about Aussie Rules Football and Cricket. In the UK he was very soon played for the district side and was spotted by Crystal Palace which was where his development really started. The chance to hit the big time passed him by not least when at a very young age he had the chance to go and play abroad, but turned it down. As far as local football was concerned he flourished at Sittingbourne, then at Sheppey, which he rates as his best time in football, also having a brief spell at Whitstable Town. There were a number of other Kent Clubs he had spells at until at twenty-six and injury cut short his football career, which is when he had the chance to take up coaching. After taking his badges it finally took him to working for ten years at Charlton then for fifteen Years at Arsenal under Liam Brady and Arsen Wenger. What a listen…

This week we catch up with one of Kent’s longest serving and much travelled ‘kit men’ in Ade Hubbard who is Whitstable's current ‘man with the magic sponge’. Although these days his role is more about looking after the payer’s kit and making sure the on training and match days everything is in order, right down to the tape player’s use. He talks about his football life after spells playing school and local football where he played in the same team as Jim Ward, then years later he was kit man for Jim at Ramsgate and at Maidstone United, both clubs enjoyed great success while he was with them. He says that in his job, it’s the nearest he can get to actually playing the game as it’s such a big part of his life. Belmont Banter Episode 69 EFREM EBBLI the Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
Efrem Ebbli, played as a goalkeeper who came over to England from Italy in his 30’s after a really good career playing in a number of Division 3 and 2 sides at the top level in Italy. He returned to Italy after 5 years in England after playing for Dover, Herne Bay, Deal and Sittingbourne to coach in the Italian Leagues as a goalkeeper coach at the very top level. Efrem holds the record at Herne Bay when he kept a clean sheet in league matches for over 600 minutes without conceding a goal, the record still stands today as Jack Delo missed breaking it by 60 minutes. He was nicknamed ‘The ITALIAN STALLION’ by one of the Medway papers after his acrobatic display in a match playing for Sittingbourne. It was difficult chatting with Efrem as we were not able to use Zoom and the quality of the audio was not up to put usual standards but it was great to catch up with him.

JUNE 27 2021: Belmont Banter Episode 68 Steve Marshall (PART TWO) the Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
Steve Marshall who had a great career with a number of Kent Clubs not least Whitstable Town where he won promotion to The RYMAN League for the first time in the club’s history. He was also part of The FA VASE winning DEAL Town side which was the last the side who won the very last cup finale at the ‘Old WEMBLEY STADIUM’ before he joined Whitstable Town under manager Matt Toms. In his early days Steve lived in Peterborough and played for Peterborough U18’s and played for their U18’s also played for Purfleet, Blythe Spartans, Margate, Sheppey United, Ashford and Maidstone United where was featured on BBC Football Focus after his six-minute hat-trick, amongst others in his long and very successful time in his football career. Steve also highlights the youngsters at the club, and those in the reserves who were pushing to play in the first team as one of the main reasons that Whitstable Town won promotion. There is a twist at the end as Steve tells us that he has taken his coaching badges… but it’s not all it seems…

Jack Delo is a local lad who at a very young age had trials for Chelsea, Queens Park Rangers and others but chose to go down the route of local football. Playing for Herne Ba, Canterbury City and Folkestone United under manager Neil Cugley. Jack was with the Folkestone club for five years and rates it as his best time in football, certainly his most successful winning promotion the Ryman Premier. Steve Marshall is one of those players who is known all over Kent as he has either scored against your team, or if you’re lucky enough like Whitstable Town were, scored goals for you. It’s that simple. Born in Peterborough Steve started playing at very young age, he went with his father who played in goal for a local side and Steve st times used to sit in the dressing room of a men’s side, so as he says with all the ‘chat going on’ he had to grow up quickly. Played for his school side and at 15 played junior football at Peterborough United, then at U18’s played for Baker Perkins who were a really good works team in the area who had great facilities in a league that was the same standard as the Kent League. He then moved down to London and was then approached by John Roseman who was manager of Sheppey United. That just the start of Steve’s amazing football journey as he went on to play for Margate, Maidstone, Deal amongst many others

Jimmy Stouts had a very successful football career playing as a professional with Dover and Stevenage also the England University side and in the Army the Combined Services Football Team and where he played all over the World. Late in his career family life took charge and he decided he needed to be more local playing for Maidstone United where he captain the side, before finishing his time in local football with Whitstable Town in Marc Seager’s very successful promotion winning side. He speaks with passion about the team, saying that all of the players involved even the ones on the bench or who took part in training, they all had an impact of the success of the team. Jimmy has now turned to coaching youth football at Canterbury City saying: “For me it’s all about youth development; two hundred per cent” which he believes is the cornerstone of any club wanting to build for the future in these difficult times. May 30 2021: Belmont Banter Episode 64 Gary Doe: The Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
Gary Doe’s journey starts in the early 60’s when he was very young as he says playing with the old heavy leather football and wooden studs in your boots. He’d always lived in the Faversham area, signing for a team called Faversham Spartak, a short time later the family move to Medway. He played mostly school and local lads football and remembers playing in a cup final at on Chatham’s ground scoring four of the six goals. There were scouts at the game and Gary was selected for a trial at 13 years of age at Gillingham but his father said no, then a couple of years later he received a letter to go to Charlton after the trials was told he was not wanted. That disappointment hurt him so much that he never kicked a ball again for a couple of years…. But Gary’s story does not end there he then he went on to play Southern League with Canterbury City, then at Chatham, Sheppey, Lordswood, Faversham and Margate.
This is a great story for any budding young footballer just starting out…. The moral of Gary’s story is you can recover from all the knock backs and still go on the have a very good career in football…

Belmont Banter Episode 63: KEVIN BROWN The Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
Kevin Brown’s football started with local junior side Dolphins, at the age of eighth that Kev, as he prefers to be called, joined another Maidstone team ‘Blue Eagles’ where he stayed until he was fourteen. He then had a spell at Gillingham youth Academy before moving to Margate U18’s. His time at Margate finished after a year as the travelling, he was ferried back and forth by his Dad and he looked for somewhere closer to home and moved to Sittingbourne. Then moved to Tunbridge where he played in a pre-season game against Wolves, then moved to Tunbridge Wells, spent two seasons there before moving to Sheppey United, Whitstable (there is a story there) and Herne Bay …. Much travelled Kev who played at Sittingbourne and Sheppey, just wanted to play football tells some great stories about all the different clubs and the players and managers he played with. Jimmy Strouts ended up have a fantastic football career in part two when Jimmy follows his fantastic football journey. He talks about playing for Middlesbrough U18’s training for them once a week, Then Mansfield Town, he ended scoring a ‘worldly’ and that was the catalyst from him serving a professional contract, he then had trials for Cambridge Utd and others eventually signing for Dover. Jimmy saying that during his career he has played with some fantastic players… there is lots more to come, including his time at Whitstable Town.

Belmont Banter Episode 61: GARY SAYER The Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
GS as everybody knows Gary Sayer has been a fixture in the Whitstable area for many years. At eight he joined Herne Bay and stayed until he was thirteen, the year group folded and he then moved to Tyler Hill FC. Gary says they were a really good side at the time and were far too good for the league they played in. At Fourteen he joined Whitstable Town and progressed through to the first team where he stayed for many years where played nearly 300 games first team games for Town. Gary was an integral part of the very successful Whitstable side during the clubs most successful period. Gary then moved to local rivals Herne Bay to play for manager Simon Halsey who knew Gary well as he was assistant to Marc Seager who won promotion to the Ryman League for the first time in the club’s history. Gary finished his football career at Canterbury City under Ben Smith, he amassed nearly 600 games playing for local clubs and he has some great stories to tell, it’s one you will all enjoy.

May 9 2021 Belmont Banter Episode 60: DANNY WARD The Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.Danny’s football journey started at a very young age playing for the local boys’ club in Dundee which is where he and older brother Jimmy were born. At nine years old Dan was picked out by Celtic youth who at the time were Celtic Boys Club. The problem was it was a very strong side and beating other teams very easily, the same teams all his mates played for and it took all the fun out of the game. When he was about twelve he stopped playing football just played with his mates in the park until he was eighteen, then a couple of years later moved down to Kent. At the time he had a job in London but played football for Margate Reserves who he won the league with moving to Herne Bay the following season. How he and his brother had some great times at Margate, Ramsgate, Maidstone, Sittingbourne and Whitstable over the many years they were involved with local football. Belmont Banter Episode 59 Jimmy Strouts: (Part 1 of 3) The Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
Jimmy Strouts ended up have a fantastic football career playing against some great international players as well as players in the top leagues in the South East. In his early years’ football never really took off for Jimmy until the family moved from Selling to Sittingbourne when he was about ten years old. Sittingbourne made a big impact on him in those early days as they used to play some of the village side’s around where they lived so that became the team to follow. He played for Swale Magpies which in turn became Sittingbourne Youth. At sixteen Jimmy joined the Army and his story from then on is all about playing football all around the world. His story much more than just football as he takes us on a journey that see Jimmy return to the UK and continue his football learning. His story runs over three parts and you will get to understand the passion he has for football and the development of youth football in Kent.

Belmont Banter Episode 57 GERRY ALLAN The Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
Growing up in the hotbed of Football in the North East around Newcastle it was no surprise that Gerry grew up playing football with his mates. At sixteen he was picked for a week’s trial at Stoke, then was asked back for two weeks training, at the time England goalkeeper Gordon Bank was at the club and used to give young Gerry a lift to training. There’s a fascinating story Gerry tells about Gordon Banks and his time at Stoke. Still in his teen he had a season at a really good side in the local area, after that he moved on and the following season his position on the left wing was taken by Chris Waddle who was on the books at Newcastle United and was out on loan. Gerry had spells at Sittingbourne, Herne Bay and eight years at Whitstable Town. Gerry went on to have a couple of spells at management finishing up his career as the successful manager of the England Walking Football Team. Note: Gerry is in the record books as the scorer of the faster ever goal at WTFC, timed at 4 seconds…

Australian born James lives in Tasmania which is an island off the coast and about 12 hours by boat from the mainland. As a young footballer there were limited chances to progress his football and after moving to Melbourne on the mainland he joined Melbourne Knights the club where Mark Vaduka started and our own Ian Pullman had a spell ‘down under’. It was through ‘Pulley’ that James came to the UK, he had some trials with Scunthorpe Utd and Port Vale before he decided to just enjoy his football rather than chase the dream. In the years that he was in the UK he played for us at Whitstable Town, along with Margate, Herne Bay and 3 years at Ramsgate before moving back to Oz. James is currently back in Tasmania where he is head coach of the Glenorchy Knights Football Club

Belmont Banter Episode 56 DOUGIE BOSSON The Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
Dougie was both a player and a manager for Whitstable Town and like a lot of players at that time his career started at Snowdown which was one on the top clubs in the ‘Old Kent League’. He tells of many great players from all over the country who through work at the Mines ended up at Alyesham and played for Snowdown. Dougie says that Snowdown had some tough hard players which is where he learnt to look after himself at a time when ref’s turned a blind eye to some really rough tackles.
He joined Canterbury City who were in the old Southern League and at the time one of, if not the top clubs in Kent. After arriving home at 3am from a long away trip in the Southern League he was confronted by his wife who demanded “it was football or me.” So that was Dough finished at Canterbury and off back to Snowdown again. He then joined Whitstable as a player, then back to Snowdown again before returning to manage Whitstable Town. Dougie tells some great stories of his time in local football, reminiscing about all the great players he played with and managed, he mentions John Newman and Alan Shilling as two of Whitstable’s best.

Belmont Banter Episode 55 Rob Thomas: Bonus Edition. The Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
Local lad Rob Thomas was between six and seven when he began his football career playing by the garages at the back of his house. He then played with his mates at Joy Lane infants before joining Whitstable Town as a nine-year-old, but says he was a shy boy and took a step away from the club then joining Sturry Blues. Before long he re-joined as his mates Sam Denley, Darren Budge and Andy Martin were in Whitstable U10’s. He stepped away from football at thirteen for a while concentration on athletics, but he was soon back at Whitstable under Peter Budge and Andy Raines. Rob, who was an integral part of Marc Seager’s promotion and cup winning side, says he played with some great players and managers at Whitstable Town. Managers like Simon Kay, Jason Bragg, Matt Toms and others Rob was a one club lad and tells some great stories (we had to cut the X-rated ones) which are bound to have you laughing

When Glen was about eleven his passion was Judo and it was not until he was in his early teen that he decided that football was to be his sport. First playing for his school team then a local junior side, Thamesview, when he was 16 joined Sittingbourne that’s where his football really started. But he could not progress as fast as he wanted so joined Faversham and it was when he played in a match at Gillingham’s’ stadium that he knew football was his dream. He then played for Canterbury City, then Sheppey, before joining Chatham were his football career changed due to a sending off. (it takes a big twist) Glen’s is a journey of up ‘and down’s and some great football adventures along the way. Management was something he never considered, and says when it happened it gave him a whole new look at how a non-league team works. For this Bank Holiday weekend DEAN BOWEY joins us at Belmont Banter, Dean who has played for a number of clubs around Kent scoring nearly 300 goals in his long career, however things did not start well for young Dean. At the age of three he broke his leg playing football with his elder brother, he says “maybe that’s why I am almost two footed as I grew up favouring my left leg.” He did not get into semi pro football until he was 22/23 so he was a late starter but he certainly made up for it, started off playing Sunday morning before joining Darenth FC in the Kent League under Micky Watts, in fact over the years he became known as ‘son of’ as every time Micky Watts took on another club Dean joined up with him. He then joined Gravesend and scored in his debut against Dartford in front of 3,000. There is so much more to come in yet another great listen from Belmont Banter.

Belmont Banter BONUS EDITION (episode 51) Dave Gilham ‘Gilley’ The Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
In this bonus edition we catch up with Dave Gilham (‘Gilley’) as he is known to everyone in the Whitstable, Faversham and Herne Bay area. Gilley first taste of football came at 15 years old when he joined Faversham but he did not take to it at first, but a year later he was back. Scored on his debut at 17, and he loved it, so much so that over 50 years later he is still playing football. Gilley stayed at Faversham for 9 years during which time they won the league and numerous cups and trophy’s, then he joined Whitstable under Bill Craig. Says that at Whitstable, Gerry Allan and Phil Sullivan were some of the best he ever played with and tells some great stories. Turned down Southern League Football with Canterbury as he did not fancy all the traveling. Still plays Vets Football for Whitstable and says he can’t stop, he loves the game.

Darren tells us that he was 10 years old when he first fell in love with football playing with his mates and his parent’s grounded him as he was late home; he was not allowed to play again until he was 12 years old. Darren then joined a local junior club Athenlay F.C. in Peckham, then playing with some mates they entered a national five-a-side tournament when they went all the way to the final, coming out winners and Darren getting Player of the Tournament. He then joined Ten-Em-Bee and Darren tells us he was always compared to Ian Wright as he was so quick and had an eye for goal. At a time of great unrest he joined Faversham Town youth and suddenly all of the youth side were parachuted into Faversham’s first team. From there he joined Fisher Athletic, then he and Neville Gordon joined Whitstable… but that’s not the end of the story, trials at Nottingham Forrest and Darren has much more to tell, like all our chats it’s full of twists and turns… this is not to be missed…

This week Lee Bossun explains the number of times that he joined and left Whitstable Town and Snowdown F.C. (his home club), his falling out with a Whitstable Town manager (his father) a prolific goal scorer LEE won the Kent League Golden Boot winner scoring 48 goals. Lee also played for Bromley, Sheppey, Deal and Canterbury City amongst a number of others. He had a period when as he describes as his ground hopping days when he went from club to club. Lee says despite the number of clubs I have been to that Whitstable was always ‘My Club’. When Lee finished his playing career he spent two years as manager of Canterbury City and finishes by telling us how at the end time in football he ended up driving a ‘Pink Double-decker Bus’ working with the Pussy Cat Dolls….

Dale was signed by Gillingham while not even 15, his first game was against a Brighton Youth side, next up was away to West Ham and the match was played at their Chadwell Heath training ground. Harry Roadmap was manager with the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard Neil Ruddock, we were all a bit star struck. We ended up losing 12-0 but what an experience. Then he signed for Sheppey Utd, played in the FA Cup at just sixteen, then played in the Kent Cup and was chosen as the last player to take penalties, missed his and ended up all over the back pages of the local papers. Signed by John Roseman at Whitstable, had a couple of great years at Town, missed out on being it the FA VASE winning Deal side under Tommy Sampson, fate worked against him in a strange way. Dale tells of John Roseman’s bizarre ritual in preparation for a cup finale, (you will not believe what the players had to do), and much more

Josh starts off his chat saying... “my best times in football were at Whitstable during the Seags Years, such a great bunch of lads” and when asked about his earliest football memory it was with Sam Denley playing underneath the stands at some ground, could have been Town but I don’t know where. As a local lad his first team at about seven years old, was with Tyler Hill. Then at nine he joined Whitstable Town under Paul Gardener, then Pete Budge took over at WTFC U16, then Peter took on as manager of WTFC U18’s, saying; “We had a great side”. He talks about the community feel of Whitstable’s club which is much the same as where he is now, living in Sweden. In his early years. Josh touches on the impact that people such as Dave McFall and Simon Kay had on his early years, then it was all about his time at Town. He then talks about his time under Marc Seager, then basically as a one club man (he played a season for Herne Bay) after traveling the world with his job Josh suffered a life threatening injury… there is more to tell this is another one not to be missed…

This week we chat to ‘Geary’ … Dave Gear who fractured his skull against Tottenham whilst playing for Canterbury City, but as you will find out with Dave’s story there is a lot more to him than a tough tackling no nonsense centre-half. Dave started his football at Aylsham and had spells at Thanet United, Ramsgate, Margate, Canterbury City and a good four-year spell at Ashford, in between two spells at Whitstable Town where his committed style of play won him many admirers. He also played for Deal and Hythe, when asked ‘why so many clubs’ Dave replied… ‘They wanted me, I moved on because other clubs wanted me.’

Being a Ramsgate lad Stuart, one of four brothers, started playing football at Westgate Sports, he then progressed to U10’s at Ramsgate under manager John Utterson. Stuart spent his teenage years at Ramsgate under Jim and Danny Ward, being at tall lad, as a striker. His best and most prolific time in football was at Ramsgate winning leagues, promotions, cups and trophy’s. He had a break from football and went to University in Wales where for a spell he played for Cardiff U19’s before finishing his time at Uni; he went back to Ramsgate. He then joined Whitstable Town after a phone call from Peter Nott. During his time at Whitstable Stuart also played under Mark Munday, Mark Lane, Justin Luchford, Dave Fairclough and lastly Nicky Southall, which added up to six different managers. He says that it was a difficult time at Town with lots of players and managers coming and going; but there is much more to tell….

This week are delighted that Andy Constable has joined us for Part Two of his football journey during which Andy won promotion FIVE TIMES. During a long non-league career from his teenage years; Andy is still playing as he reaches forty down at Lydd FC. He seemed to have the knack of playing for many, many clubs and has always been well received by the home crowds whenever he returns with a new team. Andy tried his hand as player manager but says that he is still keen to try his hand again but concedes that management is hard enough, let alone still playing at the same time. LOCKDOWN BONUS This week we catch up with Andy Skinner who now lives in Australia and enjoyed a couple of great seasons down under. Andy who has one on the longest throws in non-league football, started off playing in the local area of Lordswood. Had a trial at Arsenal at the age of 16 says that did not work out and he fell out of love with football, two years later joined Oakwood, then Chatham Town and then back to Lordswood, nearly joined Whitstable after an approach by John Roseman to join Whitstable but signed for Chatham again for two years. He then signed for Whitstable and as he says enjoyed his best times at Town. You will not believe what happened to Andy after he settled in Australia he tells some great football stories about his time down under that you will find hard to believe, not to be missed.

This week we catch up Neville Gordon who was part of the ‘London Boys’ under manager John Roseman as a young boy he dreamt of playing in the Premier League. When he was 14 he signed professional forms at Millwall under manager Mick McCarthy but he never got a start. Then he had a terrible ankle injury so they did not take up the option to renew. Then he was signed by Redding and after a few games his ankle went again. He was then signed by top Finish side HSK who were in the Champion’s League …. This week we catch up Paul Piggott is current Chairman of Hollands and Blair who jokes that he ‘only got the club Chairman’s job because no-one else wanted it’. Paul who started his football life as a goalkeeper as a very young lad and stayed between the sticks or many years. Started at a local Sunday side before signing a contract with Sittingbourne. Then Paul moved onto Chatham Town where he broke his leg, when after a half a season his leg had healed Paul went to Faversham Town. But the journey is only half way through as Paul moves on into management until eventually years later as chair of Hollands and Blair with Simon Halsey as his manager.

DUE TO A GLITCH in The Recording, we miss the first minute or so as Marlon is talking about being a PE teacher and how his pupils do not believe his age…
Marlon who by his own admission has been at so many clubs he’s lost count since he first started playing football. As he progressed from School football Marlon was selected for trials at Gravesend and Northfleet, Millwall and Nottingham Forest but by his own admission he was good at football but at that time “I did not want it enough”. He then had spells a Bromley and other clubs before a three year break away to university, on his return to non-league football he had spell at Welling United. Then playing for Gray’s against Herne Bay he scored after which he signed for Bay. His next move was to Whitstable where he enjoyed one of his best spells in football… but that’s not the end of the story as Marlon takes us on a journey full of twists and turns. Enjoy…

Belmont Banter: Kevin Fewell (episode 36) The Official Podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
Goalkeeper Kevin Fewell is one of a long line of top quality keeper to play for Whitstable Town who has been a great servant to the club. Known to the Oysterboys supporters as ‘Wonder-Fewell’ Signed as a youngster for Charlton FC before a spell at Chatham where he worked his way up to the first team, stayed at Chatham for a couple of seasons before joining Sittingbourne.
When Marc Seager took over at Whitstable Town with Simon Halsey as his number two and Mark Lane as the goalkeeping coach. Seager was quoted in Whitstable Times after Mark Lane had secured the service of Kevin Fewell… “That’s it now; we have Kevin who was the missing link, we can push on now”
And push on we did… as Kevin became the backbone of the squad that was the first for many, many years won promotion out of the Kent League.

Belmont Banter Ade Burroughs (episode 35) The Official Podcast of Whitstable Town F.C. Adrian (Ade) who is a Faversham local and that’s where he started at junior football, first with the school side and Sunday Football until he was 16. He wanted to play at U18’ level but at the time the only two teams in the area who fielded an U18’s sides were Dover and Gravesend and Northfleet. Belmont Banter Andy Kier (episode 33) The Official Podcast of Whitstable Town F.C. Andy Kier who was a long time servant of Whitstable Town and played for the club over a number of seasons at the Belmont. Andy actually played for WTFCU18’s who had just started to play in the East Kent Youth League, but says ‘we weren’t very good’. From there he played for Bishopsbourne before joining Canterbury City, then at the age of 24 joined Whitstable Town. Had a short spell at our near neighbours before returning to Town where in total he spent nine years at Whitstable Town. Andy really is one of the longest serving player’s ever to pull on the Red and White of Whitstable Town. Happy New Year

This is PART TWO: More from golden boot winner Stuart King as the Whitstable Town striker talks about his time at Whitstable and other clubs and by his own admission he stopped playing too early. He says that the move from Folkestone Invicta (for financial reasons) to Maidstone United was not one he wanted, he accepts that the club needed to sell him but was not happy with the move. Says ‘they paid him more money than he’d ever earnt’ but did not enjoy one minute of his time at Maidstone. As a player Stuart always wore his heart on his sleeve when he played, nothing has changed in this ‘warts and all’ chat with Stuart King in the last one of 2020.

Mark Munday who has had a long and very successful career with a number of Kent Clubs; says that he enjoyed playing for Thanet Untied as much as he did for Gravesend in the Conference. He was a player and the manager at Whitstable Town, won the league with Herne Bay, played for Ashford when they were a top club. His advice to the younger players trying into make it to progress their career is: “There is nothing wrong with taking a step back to learn your trade as it’s all about playing football at the right level, that you enjoy, that’s when you play at your best”

Keith McMahon who has only ever managed two club as a manager firstly; he had 11 years at Thamesmead Town taking them from the Kent League to the Ryman Premier. His next management position where he spent 5 years was with VCD before he unexpectedly was asked to leave just as the 2020-2021 season was about to start. In between his management career he has also been co-host on a long running radio phone-in show which is all about the Isthmian League. Keith talks about how shocked he was; the former Thamesmead Town manager admitted he "didn't see his departure coming as he had everything in place for the start of the new season.”

In this edition we catch up with Whitstable Town’s ex player, captain and manager Jason Bragg. Jason’s first real football experience was as a youngster playing Sunday League football at Senrab football Club. The South London junior side was responsible for payers who have gone on to have successful professional careers, including Sol Campbell, Jermain Defoe, Ledley King and John Terry.
Due to his parents splitting up Jason then never played much football, just the odd games with his mates until he was in his early twenties. Eventually moving to Kent from London he played for teams such as Cray, Dartford and many others before finally finishing up at Littlebourne on his football journey. It makes for another great listen…

Ex player Steve tells us he was the scorer of Whitstable Town’s ‘Goal of the Century’ (you need to listen to the podcast to find out more) Steve Sodje was part of manager John Roseman’s side at Whitstable Town. Steve; along with a number of ‘The London Boys’ as Steve calls them, all joined Town at the same time and enjoyed some great times at Whitstable Town.
Steve who over his career played for a number of Kent Clubs has stayed in contact with many of the local lads he played with. “They were some really great times at Whitstable and we were all made so welcome by everyone at the club, we really did feel part of the family”.

In this edition we catch up with Whitstable Town’s ex manager Justin Luchford who started his football career at the age of 16 when he was captain of Kent, joking that he only stayed on an extra year at school so the he could carry on as captain. School work paid off for Justin as he now lives and works in Dubai where after ending his football in England he is now assistant manager/coach of the Dubai All Stars.
After spell at Faversham, Hythe, Ramsgate and Whitstable Town, Justin finished his time in the UK as part of the very successful management team at Tonbridge Angels after five years as first team Coach. It was a great chat with Justin who has some great stories to tell and says he was ‘gutted to leave Town’. Adding… one of his best memories in football was WTFC supporters singing his name during the 2-0 victory away to Faversham Town.

In this edition we catch up with ex Whitstable Town manager Jim Ward, he says that in his younger days he was lucky enough to play with Peter Lorimer and other really good footballer’s Born and raised in Dundee then moved down to England and joined the RAF in 1967.
He moved around a couple times, played for Milton Keynes City who were a really good side but they fell on hard times, saying he enjoyed his football but believes that he has been a ‘better manager than a player.’ Jim speaks about settling in Thanet, his start in management with Margate reserves and his time at Herne Bay, and the good times he enjoyed at Whitstable and Ramsgate which Jim looks upon as his home town club.

In this edition we catch up with ex Whitstable Town manager Geoff Record when he talks about his time at the club and his early involvement with Sheppey, who are his home town team. Geoff who was playing for Dover in the Sothern League joined Whitstable in 1989, the move was prompted by a change of career and was quickly made captain by manager Peter Merritt. He adds, “we had a decent side but under achieved it the league but had some great runs in the cups”.
Geoff spent seven years with Town and mentions players Karl Rolls, Wayne Draper, Russel Mason and many more has some great stories to tell about his time at Whitstable Town and also Sheppey where he played and also managed the club. Says that he was pleased to play a part, as assistant his great mate Ernie Bittern in putting Sheppey firmly back on the football map once again.

In this edition we catch up with Whitstable Town’s Josh Algar who has run WTFC Academy for the last four years. Josh sign for Millwall when he was nine years old where he spent two years before signing for Ebsfleet United at the age of thirteen whilst he was with them he had a number of trials with a number of clubs, the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea before he was offered a two-year contract with Leyton Orient. At the end of the two years he was offered a part in ‘exit trials’ which is where all the scouts attend, but says he was not in the right frame of mind.
After a two-year spell at Maidstone United, Josh then joined Whitstable Town under the Ward brothers before going on to play for a number of local clubs. He then decided that his business which was beginning to take off he chose to concentrate on the business of running his Academy, firstly with ex-chairman Joe Brownett then with current chairman Steve Clayton.

In this edition we catch up with Whitstable Town’s Darryl Farley who is the Youth Development Officer at Whitstable Town. Darryl talks enthusiastically about how he is also the WTFC U13s manager and often struggles to find time to get to 1st Team games at The Belmont given the amount of time he spends on youth matters. On top of the twenty or so youth teams at WTFC that Darryl has overall responsibility for, he has also been helping to set up the U7’s who, like all the youth teams at Whitstable, have some cracking players.
Talking about his own early experiences of playing football; he says that he lived on the Isle of Sheppey and at the age of 16 he played for three different teams over the course of the weekend.

In this edition we catch up with ex Whitstable Town’s Simon Halsey who after a very successful time as assistant to Whitstable Town manager Marc Seager went on to manage himself. He says that he never wanted to be a manager, ‘just wanted to be a coach, never a manager’ but he went on to manage at a number of Kent clubs. He won promotion with Herne Bay, had spells managing at Ramsgate and Lordswood amongst others. Simon also returned to Whitstable Town as manager.
Currently manager of Hollands and Blair Simon talks about his disappointment at the way the FA handled the recent FA Cup match last weekend that was called off due to a couple Burgess Hill Town’s players tested positive for covd19. “We took the vote and decided that it was health before wealth, but the FA decided to award the tie to the opposition”.

(This is part two) In this week’s episode we catch up with Whitstable Town’s Sam Denly we hear how Sam started his successful football career in Whitstable Town’s youth sides. As a manager had four year spells both at Herne Bay and Hythe, talks about the worst drive to a club he ever had. Say’s as a manager he was not a fan of social media… “for one positive comment about me, there are four or five who want to say something bad’. Sam really opened up about his years at both clubs as the manager and Whitstable as a player, ‘some of my best years in football’.
As far as cricket is concerned say’s brother Joe was always better than him… “Joe was more focused, calmer, I was always the opposite’. “Could I have gone any further cricket wise, maybe… but Joe always played two years about himself, he was sixteen years old he was playing with me in the U18’s at Kent, that’s how good he was.” And goes on to say how proud he and all the family were sitting in a box at the ground when Joe walked out as an England player in the First Test of the 2019-20 Ashes, he felt so nervous but Joe was so calm…

(This is part one of two) In this week’s episode we catch up with Whitstable Town’s Sam Denly we hear how Sam started his successful football career in Whitstable Town’s youth sides. And how a serious knee injury forced him to retire from playing over a decade later before moving into management. He remembers the time when he was in a knee brace and younger brother Joe Denly England and Kent Cricketer (England Ashes winner 2020) who had his arm in plaster at the same time after breaking it playing football for Whitstable’s U18’s.
How Sam went off to Australia to play Cricket for South Perth in the Suburban A League whilst part of Kent Cricket’s youth set up. He goes on to speak about the effect his Dad Nick and his youth football coaches at Whitstable Town had on his life. WTFC coaches, the likes of Peter Budge and Alan Gardener who he says were a massive influence on him growing up. And much more….

This week we catch up with Whitstable Town’s official photographer Les Biggs who started off in the Army before taking to the sea when after over the next thirty odd years he can say that he really has ‘sailed the seven seas’ having visited he says 84 or 85 different places around the world,
In this episode we hear how Les played in goal for Kent Schools, and the Army as well as in Whitstable Town’s ‘A Team’ at a time when Whitstable had three men’s sides. His love of golf, until his knees forced him to stop playing, then when he then took up photography, saying how much he has enjoyed being around all the players and managers at Whitstable Town over the last decade or so. This week we catch up with a firm favourite of Whitstable Town in striker Ian Pulman who during one of his spells at Whitstable Town scored a career best 28 goals in a season.
In this episode we hear from the much travelled player whose football career took him from Chelsea Reserves where he played when Claudio Ranieri was the manager. Then travelling all the way across to the other side of the world to Australia playing in front of crowds of 10,000 for Melbourne Knights. Ian reminisces about all the fellow players and the good times he enjoyed at Margate, Ramsgate, Eastbourne and Whitstable Town and how it’s not all fun when you go out on loan… and getting sent off for fighting. Then talks about this year when he has signed to playing Vets Football against the like of Jimmy Bullard, ex Whitstable Town players Marcus Perona and Tommy Martin.

Due the current covid19 pandemic manager Lloyd Blackman and chairman Steve Clayton decided that even though the season ended prematurely it was decided it should still go ahead so it was conducted online.
In episode two we hear the reaction from players Dan Eason, Jake Mackenzie, Tom Bryant (WTFC Captain) and Oysterboys supporter Andy Bruce. Manager Lloyd Blackman tells them which awards for the season 2019-20 they have won. This was originally shown via YouTube on WTFC TV however we decided to release it in two parts as a podcast to give WTFC supports the chance to listen to the news from Whitstable Town on their mobile’s.

Even though the season ended prematurely it was decided it should still go ahead so it was conducted online.

Belmont Banter (episode 6) The Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C.
Today’s guest is Mark Lane ex Whitstable Town manager, goal keeper and present assistant manager alongside First Team Manager Lloyd Blackman who he rates as a really good manager for Whitstable Town. Mark originally lived in Manchester where his early love of sport, in particular football developed into his career, then after leaving University at eighteen he spent two years coaching in America. Upon his return to the UK he secured a good job down in Kent where he eventually settled, combining his coaching with playing Sunday football when he was approached on the A2… by John Roseman manager of Sheppey to join the club, (John Roseman also managed Whitstable). It was as the goalkeeper for Sheppey that Mark won the Kent League at a time when the league numbered 24 or 25 Kent sides.
A knee injury curtailed his playing career and from then on, apart from the odd time helping out between the sticks he concentrated fully on work and on coaching. He mentions recent Whitstable Town player Shaun Welford as one who he would always have in his side, naming Dave Powel from his early Sheppey days as the best player he ever played with, before going on to mention that he could easily name a pretty good eleven from all the ones he’d played with over the years. Admits that he feels comfortable at Whitstable Town having been around the club as player, coach and manager for a number of years. In 2010 he stepped in as manager and won the last four matches saving the club from relegation that season. Rated Mark Mundey as a really good manager but says things did not work out for him during his time in charge. How he had a great working relationship with managers Marc Seager and the recently departed Scott Porter, he speaks about hoe he loves working with the younger players and the different characters and banter in the dressing room and much, much more.

Today’s guest is Steve Growns a local supporter talking to Belmont Banter, born in Whitstable and living five minutes from The Belmont Ground Steve’s first time watching the oysters was when he was nine years’ old. Steve chats with Tony Rouse about when they were both youngsters and used to crawl under the seating of the main stand and treat it like a den when the football on the pitch was not that interesting. He talks about players from the 80’s a period he remembers well; speaking about many local players and managers; the likes of Jerry Alan, Neil Davey, Andy Leech, Nick Denly and club stalwarts Peter Merit and Trevor Gowan amongst others.
His involvement today with Whitstable through his twitter account @The Gas Works End’ which is all about the club. Admits (apart from his family) he has three loves; Whitstable Town, Southampton and Clyde in Scotland. Steve tells Belmont Banter the story of going out for a meal with Clyde manager Barry Ferguson and others from the club after a match. Sitting spellbound as Ferguson cleared a space on the table and using salt and pepper pots so that he could show everyone how they lost the match. How he has amassed over 30 Clyde team shirts since he started following the them, albeit mostly from afar. He looks back to October when he feared for Southampton after they lost 9-0 and says even though they then lost the next two games they have the right manager at the club. Ended by saying that Joe has passed Whitstable Town onto a safe pair of hands in Steve Clayton and that ex player Lloyd Blackman is the right manager at the right time for Whitstable Town.

Ex Whitstable Town F.C. manager Scott Porter chats about his time at Whitstable winning his second promotion with Town after achieving the same feat with Hythe. His record breaking run in the F.A. Cup worth between £40 and £45,000 to Hythe after the F.A. Cup First Round away at Hereford, staying up all night celebrating then hung over and being interviewed by the BBC in the morning. A silly prank ending his promising football career after sledging down a hill near Folkestone on a ‘For Sale’ sign, he still has trouble with his knee to this day. Admitting to Belmont Banter that he is not everyone’s cup of tea, saying he is a winner and only interested in winning, and that all his players love him, he says he has the knack is being the manager in the changing room and a mate in the bar.
As a 15 years old playing right back for Folkestone’s first team against Faversham, winning 8-0 and setting up two of the goals. Despite his wonderful achievements at Hythe; Scott says… ‘the season at Whitstable Town ranks as my most enjoyable of them all; from the chairman, the football, the fans, the club, the players, the presentation night and the holiday away with all the players, that was the best time ever.’ I told that group of players this is something that you probably will never have again. Scott finishes by speaking about his new project; taking Hawking his local village club to the Kent League Premier Division. Whatever happens, with Scott Porter as manager it will be one hell of a journey. We wish him well…

Whitstable Town F.C. Chairman Steve Clayton talks about the challenges of amalgamating the main club with the junior, the season so far, and his plans for next season. Work that is going on at The Belmont Ground Whitstable so that the club will be ready to start the new season, whenever that is. How his relationship with manager Lloyd Blackman has been strengthened during the lockdown, also praising members and supporters, youth team managers and coaches for their hard work getting the ground looking it’s best.
He talks about the arrival of a new tractor together with all the grass cutting attachments purchased partly with the aid of a grant to Whitstable Town from The FA. the new automatic watering system which will save untold hours of moving sprinklers about the pitch. Fund raising efforts which have now surpassed the £5,000 target. Steve confirms that despite the setback of the enforced loss of football due to corona virus he is still fully committed to installing a G3 pitch which is now passed the planning stage. The first team, the reserves, the expanding youth academy which goes from strength to strength, and much, much more.

Supporter Richard Tennant is todays guest on Belmont Banter on which he talks about a 64-year-old goal keeper who almost cost Whitstable promotion. Enjoying his time at The Belmont Ground with his Dad and his three children all enjoying the football.
