Last year, when I was in the process of redesigning my website, I booked a photography session with Ashley C. Ford. Ashley is an event and portrait photographer based in southeastern Pennsylvania. Fun fact: I HATE getting my photo taken. I never got excited for photo day at school and cringed whenever my mom asked me to jump into family photos. I knew that professional and branded photography would pull my website together, so I reluctantly started looking for photographers to work with.

I didn’t want to be airbrushed within an inch of my life or stand awkwardly in a gazebo somewhere trying to hold my smile. When a friend recommended me to Ashley, I reluctantly checked out her Instagram feed. What I saw completely blew me away! Her photos were beautiful but retained a certain sense of vulnerability. They were a snapshot in time that managed to capture the true essence of her subjects. After a few text exchanges, I was walking through the Bristol Warf and Ashley was taking photos at some of my favorite haunts. It was an incredible experience and I highly recommend checking her out a www.ashleycford.com if you’re looking for your next photographer. In the meantime, listen to my last podcast, which features Ashley and learn all about her!

We talk about:  Barbie being any early influence on Ash’s work  Defining your brand as a photographer  Her method for getting the perfect shot  The software that she swears by to edit photos

If I could describe Charmel in one word, it would be confident. I met Charmel almost 6 years ago, when I was attending meetups in the Philadelphia tech community. She’s got a style that’s all her own and isn’t afraid to be herself. It’s incredibly refreshing. As someone who respects individuality, I knew I wanted to host Charmel as a guest on Dreams & a Double-shot and highlight her journey.

Besides her confidence, she’s not afraid to evolve as a person and challenge herself, while still remaining true to herself and her values. From podcasts like Black & Syndicated or Reluctantly Adult, a #foodstagram dedicated to her culinary adventures or launching her own event company, she truly exemplifies what it means to be a multifaceted entrepreneur. We had an awesome conversation and talked about:

-Defining success on your own terms -Holding true to your own unique vision as an entrepreneur -Creating space for and leading events for black, brown and indigenous members of the LGBTQIA community -And being a “Jawn of All Trades,” and infusing your brand with a healthy and hilarious dose of pop culture

My first year in running my own business was a rollercoaster. I was working 40-60 hours a week, going to grad school part time at the Fox School of Business and trying to schedule in time with friend. In short, was DOING THE ABSOLUTE MOST and when the year ended, I was burnt the f*** out. However, I wouldn’t have started any other way. I’m a firm believer in experience being the best teacher and I learned a lot about myself and running an online business in that first year.

On today’s episode of The Dreams & a Double-shot #podcast, I’m taking a trip down memory lane and sharing 6 lessons that I learned from my first year in business. Tune in for honest business advice and stay for the slight rambling induced by the rosé I was drinking. What can I say? I make my own fun.
