  1. What. A. Year.

As we head towards the end of 2020, we're taking this time to reflect on our personal growth and how we have overcome and dealt with, in our own ways, the challenges that this year has thrown at us. From university graduation and job hunting, to the Covid lockdowns and the BLM movement - it's hard to believe that so many things have happened in just one year.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel too though! Despite the difficult year it's been, we chat about the surprisingly positive outcomes that have come out of all the chaos, whether that is in our relationships, self-growth or simply having more time to pursue your hobbies.

East Meets West is a positive and safe space to connect and inspire our community and each other as Asian Australians, through interesting conversations and personal stories. Come join in the conversation about culture, relationships, career and more!

We can't believe we've made it to ten episodes of EMW! Thank you so much to everyone who has listened and supported us along the way. Season 2 will be even BIGGER and BETTER - get pumped!

TW/Trigger Warning: This episode mentions eating disorders and body dysmorphia. If what we say raises any issues for you, please reach out to The Butterfly Foundation at www.butterfly.org.au or call 1800 33 4673.

For our tenth and final episode of this season, we want to get real with you about body image and mental health. In a society obsessed with appearances, many of us are taught to criticise and hate the way we look from an early age. Tune in as we discuss our struggles with our own body image, the various factors in our upbringing that influenced this, as well as the impact it has had on our mental health. A loving reminder to everyone that dealing with body image and mental health is a journey not a destination - it's natural to have good days and bad days, and to even feel like you're relapsing sometimes - and that's okay! Our DMs are always open to anyone who wants to have a chat.

Get ready for this wacky episode, where Jenny reads Cindy and Clare's astrological birth charts (aka advanced horoscopes) and tries to convert them into believers. Astrology and holistic wellbeing methods such as the use of crystals and meditation are topics that almost immediately divide people into believers, skeptics and those who just straight up reject it. Regardless of your standing, we hope you keep an open mind throughout this conversation - you might learn a thing or two!

Where are you from? It’s a question that perhaps many Asians living outside of Asia have encountered at least once or twice - and usually not in a good way. For the most part, being asked this question signals to us that we don’t belong in Australia even though we grew up here. However, today we are going to spin this question on its head and ask each other - where are you from? In this episode, we explore our family history, our connection to our homelands and any culture shocks we encountered when we visited what our parents and grandparents called home many years ago.

Most people have preferences for a certain 'type' of partner when dating, whether that's personality, height, sense of humour or more. But what about cultural or racial preferences?

This week, we unpack how our (quite different) Asian-Australian upbringing has influenced what type of partner we look for, as well as whether cultural/racial preferences are just that - preferences that can't be changed because who you are attracted to is personal, or whether they might be rooted in racist assumptions about a certain group of people.

Friends come and friends go. Some last a lifetime, while others stay in your life only long enough to teach you an important lesson. One thing is for sure - friendships are a gift that keeps on giving. In this episode, we chat about drifting apart from friends as you enter new stages of life, toxic friendships, and how the people we surround ourselves with have influenced us to this day.

Feeling behind in life, whether that's in your career or relationships, isn't just something you experience in your mid-life crisis.

For us and many others in their early 20s, feeling behind is something we struggle with - especially during a global pandemic where it feels like all the goals you set for yourself have been put on hold.  This episode we discuss when we have felt behind in life, and what internal and external factors such as social media and our Asian cultural values have influenced our perceptions.

Going to university for the first time can be daunting, especially if you don't know what you want to pursue or have a career in mind - and let's be real, most of us have no clue!

In this episode, we continue to reflect on our uni experiences, our failures and the various trials and errors that taught us more about ourselves and got us where we are today.

How did we find the right major for our studies? What happens when you fail a subject in uni? These are just some of the challenges we faced as we tumbled head-first into a new phase of our lives.

In this episode, we dive deep into the juicy topic of social life in university, especially as Asian Australians. Which uni clubs and societies were we a part of, how did we make friends, and most importantly - what is an LG?

The Aussie uni experience is often overshadowed by depictions of American college life in pop culture; we shed some light on what our social life looked like as recent university graduates from one of the top unis in Australia and around the world - especially one with a very prominent Asian-Australian student club...
