Real or fake? The million-dollar question, right (um, we’re talking about grass, people…grass!)?
Synthetic grass may look uniform and appear to be maintenance-free, but environmental and health concerns are prompting many people to rip out their artificial lawns.
You’ve heard of microplastics showing up at alarming rates in our drinking water, our food, and more. But you’ve probably never considered that that picture-perfect green artificial grass that you and your family love to play on could be hazardous to your health! Turns out, artificial grass can release microplastics and forever chemicals known as PFAS, so it’s no surprise that many people now think of their artificial lawns as hazmat sites, and they are ripping them out.
Our guest, Dani North is a Horticulturalist and Turfgrass Professional at WEST COAST TURF specializing in Kurapia drought-tolerant ground cover sod and turfgrass management. With degrees in Horticultural Science, Sports Turf Management, and Integrated Pest Management, it is a personal goal of Dani’s to assist others in achieving a successful and aesthetically pleasing outdoor landscape or playing surface.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. And, guess what friends? It’s wildfire season. Think you don’t live in an area that’s affected? Think again. Smoke can travel for miles beyond its source. In 2020, smoke from wildfires in the Western United States drifted for almost 5,000 miles, eventually being detected as far away as Europe. That’s important when considering that the primary cause of death from wildfires is smoke inhalation; according to the National Fire Protection Association, 50 to 80 percent of fire deaths are from smoke inhalation.

Do you or have you suffered from allergies, chronic sinus issues, dry nose with chronic crusting (yup, we’re going there), or use a CPAP machine? If so, you are in the right place. Today, we’re taking a deep dive into your nose, no really!
The health of our nose is often overlooked as an important aspect of our overall health. When we breathe through the nose, germs, allergens, toxins, smoke, dust, and particles can get trapped in the skin and hair inside our nostrils. Think about it, the nose is a direct link between the outside air and our respiratory system. Contaminants in the air can cause inflammation and lead to an allergic response, sinus issues, and other upper respiratory problems. Our nose functions like an air filter for the body and it's important to keep air filters clean. Someone who is here to shed light is our guest, Dr. Lebovic.
Dr. Gail Lebovic is an internationally recognized oncoplastic surgeon, a patient advocate, an inventor, and a serial entrepreneur. Currently, Dr. Lebovic serves as the Founder and CEO of Silicon Valley Innovations, Inc. Spring has officially sprung and for most of us, that means (you guessed it!) spring cleaning! If you have a pile of laundry waiting for you to scrub, suds, fluff, and fold, you’re not alone. In the U.S., 660 million laundry loads are washed every week, totaling a whopping 35 billion loads each year. But, have you ever considered what’s lurking in your laundry detergent? Could your laundry detergent be toxic to your health and the environment (hint: yes).
From phosphates and dyes to synthetic surfactants, optical brighteners, parabens, synthetic fragrances, and chlorine, your conventional laundry detergent brand is likely exposing you and your family to a host of toxic chemicals, allergens, respiratory irritants, hormone disruptors, and maybe even a cancer-causing chemical. Not to mention the plastic waste that your laundry jug is adding to landfills. To add fuel to the laundry jug fire, this plastic can take more than 100 years to break down. But the environmental buck doesn’t stop there. Laundry detergent is a major source of microplastic pollution, with a single load releasing up to 700,000 microplastic fibers into the water. Yikes!
Our guest, Anita Spiller, leads ESG for Tru Earth, a Certified B Corp global household cleaning product company, Anita focuses on eliminating household single-use plastics, battling microplastics, and donating earth-friendly products to organizations in need.

Have you ever stopped to consider the quality of the air your child is breathing every day in their classroom? It’s a fact that indoor air quality can affect IQ test scores, and cognitive development (even during prenatal exposure) and trigger respiratory illnesses like asthma and allergies. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), nearly 26 million people in the U.S. suffer from asthma. This equates to 1 in 13 people; it’s a leading chronic disease in children. Currently, there are about 4.8 million children under the age of 18 with asthma.
Did you know poor indoor air quality can also affect cognitive function in not just adults, but children and teens? According to IQAir, research reveals that breathing polluted air could impair memory and reasoning, reduce academic performance, and even lower intelligence.
Today, we’re thrilled to bring back Glory Dolphin Hammes, CEO of IQAir North America. We’re picking up from episode #75 where we discussed how air quality affects our sleep. Today, we’re diving deeper into the importance of air quality in schools and how it’s affecting children.

According to the National Cancer Institute, cancer will affect 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women in the United States, and the number of new cases is set to nearly double by the year 2050.
Our guest and busy mom of five, Amy Kearnan, is a 14-year survivor of stage 3 neuroendocrine cancer. Amy discovered the cancer she bravely fought has strong environmental origins, and the more she sought answers, the more questions she faced – especially regarding the skincare industry. She began asking, ‘Why should a lipstick contain lead? Should a foaming cleanser release formaldehyde? And, why is the cosmetics industry the least regulated in the United States, with no laws requiring the FDA to monitor the ingredients of cosmetics?’
Frustrated by the lack of truth in beauty products and instead of wasting boatloads of money on plastic tubes filled with carcinogens, reproductive toxins, and empty promises, she took beauty into her own hands, figuratively and literally. The result? A fully transparent, high-end, natural, plant-based skincare line that’s good for the earth and your skin.
Amy shares the top resources to check ingredients of your personal care products, how to read labels and what to avoid, the most shocking animal by-products commonly found in beauty items, and leaves listeners with two chances to win bundles of her clean beauty goodies.

These are chemicals that can trigger everything from nausea, vomiting, and headaches to more serious health concerns, such as lung damage, reproductive problems, and cancer.
Once a single mom on food stamps, Kari Warberg Block, challenged an industry that by its nature is toxic. As the Founder & CEO of EarthKind, Kari discovered that 98% of pest control solutions sold were poison & kill methods – so she set out to invent a better solution: plant-based pest control powered by nature. Kari is joined by Rita Stadler, the Marketing Supervisor at EarthKind. Together, they reveal how we can rid our homes and schools of pests without harming them, the most common ways pests and rodents enter our homes, how pets contribute to pesky insect infestations, and can also be harmed by toxic pest control products including rodenticides and insecticides. Kari and Rita share misconceptions about the efficacy of natural pest control solutions and why integrated pest management (IPM) is vital today. They wrap the show explaining why ingredient transparency is key and why you should avoid those you can’t pronounce. Finally, Kari shares what EarthKind is doing to empower and educate teachers and students through their Harmony Hero Award.

We’ve shed light in prior episodes on plant-based household cleaning brands as well as do-it-yourself nontoxic recipes and, today, are sharing an intimate, in-depth conversation and a sneak peek into what is going on in terms of ingredient transparency, sustainability, the science behind the formulations and what the future looks like for Procter & Gamble, the largest manufacturer of consumer goods in the world.
Our special guest is Morgan Brashear. Morgan is a Senior Scientific Communications Manager for the US Home Care Brand at Procter & Gamble. We dive deep into indoor air quality and discuss something called malodors and the negative effects of these, physically and psychologically. Morgan explains what a signature scent means for every home. She also illustrates P&G’s efforts towards ingredient transparency and how, since 2017, P&G publishes its fragrance ingredients down to 0.01percent for all fragranced products in the US and Canada on their website via a platform called SmartLabel in North America. Morgan explains the ‘red list’ on the P&G website that reveals the ingredients common to the ‘fragrance’ label that the company does not use. We tackle the differences between synthetic and natural fragrances, how P&G uses one hundred percent natural propellants versus aerosols, the healthiest options in the P&G line, and their sustainable efforts - including recycled containers and 100 percent renewable electricity in North America, Canada, and Western Europe.
Morgan explains how P&G’s products are a reflection of consumer demand and if we wish to see more fragrance-free, natural, or eco-friendlier products, it’s up to each one of us to demand them by voting with our dollar. Discover their light or fragrance-free product versions as well as their many plant-based options which are perfect for allergy sufferers.

Few of us have given any thought to the chemicals that are present in our clothes, footwear, home goods, or the fabrics we sleep on.
Four in 10 people are unaware of how textiles or clothing are produced, and most consumers are unaware of the importance of testing for the 4,000 to 8,000 individual harmful chemicals that enter factories in countless formulations that are harmful to the planet and people, especially children, the elderly and allergy sufferers.
Our guest, Ben Mead, serves as the Managing Director of Hohenstein Institute America. Ben oversees the OEKO-TEX® (a textile certification that we dive deep into) responsibilities for the U.S. Whether it’s a pair of pants or a set of sheets, Ben explains why verifiable, third-party labels ensure a product has been tested for toxic chemicals. You’ll learn how voting with your wallet encourages textile chemical testing which has a positive impact on ourselves and future generations.
We’re gonna go out on a limb and assume you’re spending a TON of time at home right now making sure your surfaces are safe in the prevention of COVID-19. But, have you considered the price of this super sanitization; the hidden costs of using toxic household cleaners?
Many name-brand cleaning products contain harmful chemicals such as synthetic fragrance, ammonia, phthalates, triclosan, chlorine, parabens, and sodium hydroxide, to name a few. Extended exposure to these is linked to eye irritation and respiratory issues to allergies and even cancer.
Hold on to your scrubby brushes, friends, because our guest commits to creating cleaning products that will protect you and your loved ones without posing harm to people, the planet, or pets at a price people can afford. She explains how to read labels, what ingredients to avoid and why cleaning products are the number one weapon in the fight against COVID.
