A sermon delivered by C.H. Spurgeon, Lord's day morning 18th Feb 1866.A useful preacher will study God's Word, and lovingly communicate its truth to people. Spurgeon, however, went further. He studied the ways of men and women, and could describe with frightening accuracy the hardness of our hearts.Some preachers unwittingly encourage those who feel too hurt to forgive. Here, however, the preacher resists every bitter thought with all his might.
Here we see Spurgeon at his most relaxed and humorous.
Speaking of these informal lectures on Friday afternoons at the College, one of Spurgeon’s former students and a close friend said this: “In the presence of his students he seemed to be as much at home, and as free from all restraints, as in the quiet seclusion of his own home. Many a time when listening to him in college I felt that the world outside, having only his works or having heard him preach, did not know Spurgeon. There were elements and powers in him which only those who saw him often in his presidential chair were acquainted with. In the pulpit, as he himself has said, there was often the necessity to repress certain tendencies of his nature, such as wit, sarcasm , and mimicry; but in the college these were allowed full play, so that his talks were not more instructive than they were entertaining and amusing. The absolute humanness of the man too was seldom seen as in college. If each student had taken notes of his wise and witty utterances, Dr. Pierson's remarks would prove to be most true. He says : ‘If the history of his humour alone could be written, it would fill volumes, and it would be a great contribution to the innocent merriment of the human race as well as a great revelation of character. He had an anecdote for any and every new emergency, and many of his stories carried all the force of argument and illustration combined .’” (W. Williams: Personal Reminiscences of CH Spurgeon)
Here we see how those who serve the Lord as preachers and elders should conduct themselves day to day. Every believer can benefit from this advice, as to how best to shine for the Lord in all company.
This lecture is of course for preachers. In it we learn the importance of attaining and retaining the concentration of the congregation.
Here, Spurgeon is speaking especially to ministers of the Gospel. We see the importance of true devotion to the Lord. How strange it is, that the Author of God’s Word is consulted less frequently that commentators upon it!
This sermon deals with spiritual laziness in particular. In it we see Spurgeon showing us that even a field of weeds can teach us! The preacher here seeks to correct the errors of hyper-Calvinism, and the excuses of those who believe that evangelism is for others and not them. Here we see the vital importance of spiritual zeal.

This sermon was preached by CH Spurgeon Lord's day morning 2nd February 1873. Here Spurgeon deals with the importance of Thankfulness, and the joy of expressing our gratitude and praise to God. We have to picture that morning, so long ago, as full of snow; with dark clouds overhead. The preacher here finds good reasons at all times for thankfulness!

Here, as I have suggested many times, perhaps you, the listener, may first wish to write down some notes of what you might have said under this heading. Then, having written some thoughts, listen to the far-reaching breadth of Spurgeon’s sermon upon this theme.
Notice his own carefulness lest in any way he reduce his Creator to the passions of us mere men. Yet take note also of his prayerful, forthright and deeply considered approach to this vital theme.

Here Spurgeon deals with the theme of thankfulness. Part way through the sermon he tells us his own reason for thankfulness on that day. He ascribes all glory, not to man, but to the living God.
He refers at 15:04 to the terrible events at the Surrey Gardens Music Hall, when pranksters shouted “Fire!” and in the ensuing stampede, eight people were crushed to death. This event cast a long shadow over Spurgeon and led to great depression of spirit. Spurgeon speaks openly of human failings, and fears; also of the victories obtained by our suffering, and now exalted, Saviour Jesus.

This sermon seems to have the dew of heaven about it. It seems so fresh and vigorous; so relevant to our times. Spurgeon, so vivid and original in his grasp of the theme of Christ’s victory, speaks in ways we do not expect. The preacher admits that Satan’s legions are bold and brave; but he warns them of the fiery judgment to come.
This sermon helps us to immerse ourselves in the great Victory which shall be heaven’s everlasting theme. Here we are reminded of that great Day when Death, and the Grave shall be seen to be defeated forever, through our Lord’s triumph on the cross.
I hope you benefit from the words of this sermon and long to be on the Lord’s side: “O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory” (Psalm 98:1)
A sermon delivered by C.H. Spurgeon, Lord's Day morning 28th December1856. Spurgeon was only 22 years of age when he preached this sermon; and the spiritual maturity God had given him was clearly seen. In later years, Spurgeon became far more cautious about preaching and commentating upon the Book of Revelation. Here he deals with the great themes of salvation by grace, election, heavenly worship. There is great spiritual benefit to be enjoyed, whatever particular views you hold of the 144,000 and the millennial reign of the Saviour.

Here we note his reluctance to be dogmatic concerning the order of events which lie ahead. He stands by the Word of God, but is nervous of all human conjecture concerning the Last Days. He himself was very careful never to handle the Book of Revelation in a rough or thoughtless way. He knew that the doctrines of the Last days were to be taught with great care, as well as expectation. The restoration of the Jewish people to Israel, and to their Messiah; the return of the Saviour; the end of the age and the fearful Day of Judgment he knew as solid realities yet to occur; but he would not be drawn to guess when, or in what exact order, these things might come to pass. He shows that this too has been corrupted by our sin, and therefore often fails to correct us. He goes on to show how contrary we are to the ways of God. It gives us an excellent insight into ourselves, if we will be willing to hold it up as a mirror. This sermon seems to end quite abruptly, since the preacher appears to have run out of time. I am sure he would have wanted to say more about the remedy in Christ. It begins with a poem by George Herbert. A sermon delivered by C.H. Spurgeon, Sunday 8th September 1878. This sermon is very important, as it deals with the age-old question of why it is that a God of love allows suffering. It was preached just five days after the ‘Princess Alice’ a paddle steamer, was accidently broken in half and sunk by colliding with another vessel. Over 600 people drowned, including five members of the Metropolitan Tabernacle. Spurgeon grasps the nettle with a sympathetic, but firm hand; reminding his hearers that God is omnipresent and omnipotent. The Lord allows, since the Fall, for apparent tragedies to happen; even involving the death of His people. This sermon gives a clear view into the thinking of Spurgeon concerning this subject which is both practical, and helpful, for the people of London in their shock and grief.

Here, Spurgeon takes up the theme of God’s omnipresence, omniscience and the trials of a troubled conscience. He never alludes to the unusual content of the verse that he has chosen; instead he fills his address with references to the sea and all things nautical.
Spurgeon would have loved to cram into his address as many references to the life of sailors as he could. He enjoyed such a challenge, as his friends made clear. Here he gives a strong and reasoned argument against the foolishness and subsequent guilt of sin.

Whether it is guilt over sins past or present, the true believer can find peace through the triumphant refrain: “It is Christ that died.”

Here, in the strongest terms, we see good reason for every Preacher and church worker to have just one goal: to glorify the Lord Jesus. Many of us explore what seem to be the varied topics of Scripture, without a clear goal to glorify Jesus in every address. Let’s seek to be like Paul at Corinth:
“I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” (1 Corinthians 2:2). Amen.

There was a tremendous fearlessness in the young preacher, which is as encouraging as it is infectious. The bulk of the sermon makes the listener long to be courageous, and to deepen our faith in God.
Towards the end of the sermon, Spurgeon describes the terror of those who die without Christ. We see that Spurgeon did not court popularity and applause, but sought to be faithful to God's Word. He sought to be as faithful to declare its judgments as its beautiful promises.

Williams wrote of this sermon:
"I had put into my hands, by a Christian matron who was anxious for my spiritual well-being, one of his sermons, entitled ' The Power of Christ illustrated by the Resurrection... This sermon amazed me. I felt bewildered, and almost stunned by it... It gave me a conception of Christ I had not hitherto possessed . It seemed to flood my soul with light divine, and bring to my anxious heart a restful benediction from God. For the first time I saw how sublime were the possibilities of character and service to the man who possessed Christ, and who was possessed by Him...
God has favoured me with constant blessing in soul winning for twenty years and more ; and I feel that no small measure of it I may owe to the influence of that sermon upon my heart and brain ."
