Thom talks to Jason Alan Cripe, one of the Founders of the Guitars Under The Stars music festival held in Lebanon. Jason talks about how the festival has evolved and how he was able to turn personal tragedy into public triumph.

Jason tells the stories of the origin of Guitars Under the Stars and how a small event in Scio turned into the festival that is now "GUTS". The consistent thread is in the "comments" and "feedback". By paying attention to what others are saying, Jason was able to fuse together new ideas. Guitars Under the Stars now offers Music Camps for Teens that includes Music Production as well as Guitar, Bass & Vocal camps.

Jason is also running 3 Street Fairs this summer, with Henry's Child headlining the event on 6/17/23 in Lebanon.

Jace Edwards has always been a part of the Henry’s Child family. He’s also a radio station owner who booked Henry’s Child for the Run-A-Mucca Festival in May of 2021. This was our first show after the Pandemic and was probably the best performance of our lives. Jace helped Henry’s Child achieve legendary local status in Eugene when he was a DJ at KNRQ, the Alternative Station in Eugene during the 90’s.

In this Podcast, Andrew interviews Jace about the state of Radio, the music business and some really great memories we share together. Jace is a huge fan of the band and we think he’s pretty awesome too.

Thom plays and discusses the song “Reasonable Doubt”. Recorded sometime between late May 1997 and February 2nd, 1998, this song is, quite literally, everything that made Henry’s Child popular in the 90’s: Highly dynamic, memorable chorus and, yes, it rocks!

There are three movements to this song. All are guitar-driven and Andrew’s words with this song really showcases his talent as a lyricist. This is one of the songs up for consideration to be re-recorded by our current incarnation.

Thom plays and discusses the song “End of You”. This is the first and only recorded Henry’s Child song that is not a Henry’s Child song (the exception being the Disney cover of "Trust In Me"). Written and recorded by Quinn Cardwell and Andrew Smith, this song was recorded twice: Once as the group “Quoting Scripture” and once for the Henry’s Child record “I Have Become”.

The song is awesome and you will be singing along after the first time you hear it! Enjoy the comparing of two recorded versions of the same song.

Thom plays and discusses the song “Matter of Timing”, which was a song written after the Clearly Confused record and before Andrew’s departure in February 1998. The song is a conscious effort to write a more melodic and less heavy song, but yet one that is distinctly Henry’s Child as it features Andrew’s newly-found falsetto and Rich’s distinctive rhythmic delay. Enjoy this “new” missing song.

This is the second part of the “Missing Music” series where Thom examines the song “Incomplete”. This was originally a post-Clearly Confused song recorded at the rehearsal studio that came out of a bass and drum jam.

This is contrasted with the same song (same music and almost the same lyrics) by Seven Second Circle for an EP that came out before the “Divide” record.

Thom talks about the missing music. These are songs that got recorded but never made it on to records for some reason or another. Today’s episode Thom explores “The Wheel”. This is a song that was used as a demo for both Rex Morningstar and Andy Makin. Thom plays both versions of the song, showing what different minds can do with the same ingredients. Plus this is one of the first songs Henry’s Child used incorporating Keyboards.

The song “The Wheel” made it onto the “Learning Too Much” record, which never got pressed and the song “Hollow” is on the “Satellite Trampoline 3” recording, which was self-duplicated and sold at only one show (TommyJohns in Salem).

Richard Miller has been part of the Henry’s Child family since Thom joined the band and has remained close with the guys throughout various projects. He’s also a huge fan of Seven Second Circle, the “prog” HC.

In today’s “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast, Thom talks to Richard about their shared group “Hack” that they joined with Rex Morningstar and how playing a backyard party ended up getting Richard to join “The American Girls” in Portland. “The American Girls” were the last band signed to Elemental Records and eventually got signed to Sony.

Richard cut one of his songs with Andrew Smith on vocals (“Speak to Me”) and anyone close to the Eugene music scene in the mid-90’s will recognize the guitar players we talk about in this episode.

Enjoy this fun conversation between two good friends with poor taste in jokes and good taste in music.

Thom also gives updates about the new Henry’s Child CD “Listen Closely” that will be out very soon.

In Part 2 of Andy Makin’s “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast, Andy and Rich discuss music. What’s particularly interesting about this episode is how Andy gives the English perspective to the bands we know and love, like Whitesnake, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Yes, they even mention assless-chaps, so you know that you are in for a treat!

Back in 1999, Andy Makin saw an ad on the Henrys Child website where they were looking for a singer. With little more than some pinners in his pocket, Andy jumped on a plane, flew from the UK to the states and instantly became part of the Henry’s Child family.

In less than 3 months, Andy, RIch, Jarrett, Doug and Thom recorded a full-length record at the home studio in Creswell. They got to perform one show in Salem before his Visa ran out. The time together was brief, but the impact was lasting.

In Part 1 of Andy Makin’s “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast you get to hear Andy’s origins, how he sang in Adrian Smith’s band “Psycho Motel” and how he got his current band “Nine Miles Down” together. Enjoy this awesome conversation with a talented singer and a permanent Henry’s Child Family member.

Once in awhile some works of greatness get left behind. This is the case for the song “Only Man”. It was written in between “Mumbles and Screams” and “Clearly Confused”. Eventually it ended up on the “Retrospective XX” record that came out in 2014.

In today’s episode, Thom resurrects this song and tells a little bit about the back story.

More importantly, Thom lets you know what Henry’s Child has been up to in recording the new/old Album. We recorded it in Portland and so far it’s sounding really great.

John Colgate braved Thom’s Portland office and sat down to talk about music: Jollymon, Assisted Living and Blyss. John is one amazing dude and not just a phenomenal guitar player, but one of the coolest guys you’ll ever meet. If you want to know some of the “secrets” of our kindred brothers, Jollymon, you’re gonna get them in this Podcast.

We talk about Spanking Sessions at “Cape Fear”, how he broke his ankle before a show in Albuquerque and how a popular contemporary Christian rock band made Blyss change their name to Assisted Living.

He gets pretty zen when it comes to the Jollymon philosophy of music and future goals, which is a breath of fresh air to hear these days. John’s creative mission is a pure one that any music connoisseur (or lover of music) will deeply appreciate. Enjoy this awesome conversation with John from Jollymon.

Our friend Steve Rogers also has contributed to this party by sifting through hours of video to get just the best bits to show at the party. Thank you SO MUCH, guys! We really appreciate you.

See you all tomorrow night at the Broadway Metro (located at 43 W. Broadway in Eugene, Oregon) for the premiere of “The Stars In Your Eyes” music video.

As a founding member of Two Minutes Hate, Thresher and TV616, Keith Brown was a staple on the Pacific Northwest Music Scene. Tommy & Keith take a leisurely jog down memory lane. We learn how these Grants Pass guys made it up to Eugene (and eventually landed in Portland), bringing along with them their unique and grinding sound that made them a stand-out, powerhouse of a band on the scene in the early 90’s.

These guys were hugely influential to Henry’s Child because we played so many shows with them. Among other things, we discuss how our common connection to she-whom-cannot-be-mentioned actually led to a stronger bond between our bands, what Tommy always looks for at Record Stores and why we had no choice but to be present to our craft. Keith divulges the secrets of how Thresher synched their video with playing live, he tells how a Sunday evening residency at Dante’s leads to creating Drummatica and what the future holds for his music.

Last week our friend Rich Swanson found a box of old cassette tapes. This box included some old Floater recordings, Two Minutes Hate (lead by Scott Watkins & Keith Brown) and some very old Henry’s Child songs. He gave some of these cassettes to our friend Steve Rogers and he was able to digitize them.

There are lots of gems on there, but one song in particular stuck out to me and so I chose to do a podcast about it. It’s an old song, but a goodie and one that has some nice bones to it. This then poses the question: Should Henry’s Child re-record some older songs? Would you be interested in hearing songs from “Mumbles and Screams” or “Drink Me” re-recorded?

Enjoy!

This is a little bit of an experiment: In preparation for interviewing Scott Watkins of After the Rain, Thom and Rich started testing mics for the purposes of testing. Little did they know that after some Laphroaig on ice that they’d been talking for almost an hour in a Grants Pass hotel room.

They discuss a myriad of topics, ranging from cell phone usage, German pancakes and why thrift store shopping is popular. This podcast cuts off abruptly as Scott and Rebecca show up, but the discussion in between is gold.

Also, we’ve got a Video Release show in Eugene on 9/28 at the Broadway Metro and an upcoming show on 10/25 at Sessions Music Hall with Toxic Zombie and After The Rain.

At the final Release show for the record “I Have Become”, Tommy T and Rich sat down with After the Rain frontman Scott Watkins to talk about music. Scott was also the guitar player and singer for both Two Minutes Hate and Thresher, staples in the 90’s Art-Rock scene.

The guys did the interview from the Best Western in Grants Pass, so there are some sound issues only because the peanut gallery was asking better questions than Tommy. That said, you get to hear how seeing the Cure in 1985 and getting front row, center stage effected their band, how Scott met his long-time partner-in-crime Keith Brown and how a Deer carcass was used as a stage prop that created a legend for Two Minutes Hate.

Carey Rich lands his spaceship to talk to Thom about Jollymon, music and the upcoming Record Release show at Sessions Music Hall (formerly HiFi Music Lounge) in Eugene.

Possessed briefly by the spirit of Kelly Clarkson, Carey talks about the making of VoidWalker and how the songs for that record came together. Carey revisits some of Jollymon’s history and talks about the different guitar players that have been in the band over the years. This gives way to commentary about the scene in the early 90’s along with Jollymon’s rapid rise, including headlining shows in Seattle at some pretty infamous clubs.

We talk about the Jollymon Record Release show in Portland and when a stage show becomes a shtick. We talked about where Jollymon recorded VoidWalker and the mastering of the new Henry’s Child Record.

We end this Podcast with a “band name” game where we have fun with each other’s childhood band names.

Farmer Grief is the talented keyboard player for Aloe Blacc, but before he took on that role he was a friend of Henry’s Child, going on Tour with them and helping them out whenever he could.

Farmer sat down to talk to Thom and what came out of that conversation is one of the best “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” episodes to date. These two friends have a lot of history together and aren’t afraid to be expressed. For example, you will learn how NOT moving to California forced Thom and Farmer to live together and why Thom lived for a brief period of time in Farmer’s darkroom. (Yes, an actual darkroom where photos get developed).

Farmer talks about working at Gerlach’s Camera Stores and how the band Big Hippie formed when Jake Morton, Harley Grey and Kalani Makanui joined Farmer, starting off as a High School Battle of the Bands.

As far as the music business, we talk about the pros and cons of in-ear monitors (and what they represent), the benefits of using & not using a click track for live performances and Farmer’s fool-proof way to politely not have to speak to your seatmate on flights to shows.

Farmer tells a great story about how he and Rex (during the Henry’s Child years) got invited to a private Absolut Vodka party the night we played Hollywood and he tells the story of how he met and ended up writing with Aloe Blacc.

Farmer finishes this conversation with some sage advice about how Empathy is the best way to build a network of folks who can help you with your music.

Thom sits down with Soriah, a Tuvan Throat Singer who has played with an incredibly diverse group of folks, including Rob Wynia of Floater and David J from Bauhaus. The name “Soriah” is a spirit suit worn for performance: A state of trance and gnosis that he gets into during his performances. We both agreed that the feeling from performing music had the potential to become “spiritual” in the sense that there are few words that can describe the feeling it brings.

We learn that his father was part of Los Sputniks, a mexican rock band that was popular in Mexico City during the mid-60’s, so music always played a part in Soriah’s life. We also learn how Jets and Airplane noises played a part as well. Soriah was exposed to Tuvan Throat Singing from a mix CD given to him by a friend. He then developed this passion the ended up with him meeting and learning from Tuvan throat singer and eventually a trip to Tuva was in order.

Soriah also created a record with Daniel Riddle at Mazinga Studios. Soriah tells us about what Tuva is like and some interesting history and stories of the Tuvan folks. Enjoy this really great interview with a passionate and talented musician.

Thom had a great conversation with Logan Hawkes. Logan was a part of the Henry’s Child family from almost the beginning, being the guy that booked and ran “The Rant” for Z-Rock in Eugene and Springfield.

Logan talks about his start at KBVR and how he’d commute from Corvallis to Eugene to work the overnight shifts at radio stations. He shares a great story about how Nirvana’s 1991 release “Nevermind” permeated the different sub-cultures of his life and work, all on the same day.

He explains how working in Radio in the 90’s worked and the concept of Payola and how it’s generally like Politics, “but with a better sound track”. We then talk about how Logan meets Henry’s Child and tells a great story about Andrew closing out the final Z-Rock show down to the very last minute.

Logan talks about Sonic X-Plosion and gives a mini tribute to Brandon Leberman (currently at KBOO in Portland) for bringing punk rock music to Corvallis Oregon in the 80’s.

Logan tells us about his final radio gig and how he got into tech. Thom and Logan discuss their mutual friend Gary Spinrad and his contribution to the new Henry’s Child record plus the fact that Gary personally knows Elviss Simmons.

Thom sits down to talk to Rex Morningstar. Rex was the second vocalist for Henry’s Child from 1998 to 1999. Rex and Thom played music Henry’s Child before in a band called “Hack” that also included long-time personal friend Richard Miller.

Thom and Rex discuss how they met in Photography class and reminisce about their friend Cory Empens. Rex tells the history of Cetus, his first hard rock band. We talk about Cetus being in the Elemental Sonic X-Plosion and how this was the first hard rock band that Rex sang for.

Then, Rex tries out for Henry’s Child and is a good fit. Henry’s Child immediately records the album “Learning Too Much” record, which Rex calls “a Rock Opera of Experimentation”. Henry’s Child then goes on Tour and it turns out that wasn’t a good long-term fit between the band and Rex.

Rex went on to start a Church down in Glendale, Oregon where he is the Pastor. Rex discusses his church, the outreach it creates in the community and the recognition of genius. Please enjoy this wonderful exchange between two friends.

Thom sat down with longtime friend Jake Morton to talk music. Thom and Jake have been friends for almost 30 years and Jake has crossed paths several times with Henry’s Child: First when his band Big Hippie would open for Henry’s Child at the WOW Hall and secondly by filling in for Doug Cramer’s absence after the reunion.

Jake tells the story of how Big Hippie moves to Hollywood, broke up and how his second band “Theta State” started out of frustration not playing. We play the song “Impotence” from Theta State.

Jake is a monster musician and was raised with music being an important part of his life. Oh, and Jarrett Holly (now Guitarist In Henry’s Child) produced virtually all Theta State recordings, some at Studio Atlantis (check out Episode 20). This Podcast comes out next Friday.

In today’s episode I interview a musical legend: Daniel Riddle of King Black Acid. Daniel is a very cool, intelligent guy who is a self-described “lifer” in music. And when you hear his history, it will all make sense.

Daniel talks about his first band, the “Indigo Zeros”, and how he ended up relocating to Portland from the San Francisco Bay area. He talks about the inception of “Hitting Birth” (and a legendary show they played with Nirvana at Satyricon). He tells how “King Black Acid” started as a way to perform a different type of music. Daniel is always expanding and this vastness is what makes his art great.

We recorded this Podcast at Mazinga Studios and it was great to be in the environment where that music is created. As Daniel said, he approaches music with a “big heart and an open mind”, which is how you should embrace this episode. Enjoy!

On today’s Podcast, Thom talks to Darren Linder. Darren plays drums in a band called “The Shrike” and played with Henry’s Child at places like the Westside Station with his band “Multiple Sarcasm” back in the 90’s.

They talk about touring different parts of the year, venues in Portland and what life was like growing up in Eugene. They came to the conclusion that the scene is less competitive now than it was in the 90’s, with music at an older age being more of brotherhood.

They play the song “Chase The Sun” from The Shrike’s latest EP. Darren gives many a tip about booking shows, something he is really passionate about. We talk about Darren’s blog and the stories he has from working music shows 6 nights a week.

We wrap it up with details about a show with The Shrike and Henry’s Child on Friday, September 21st at The Bombs Away Cafe in Corvallis.

In today’s “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast, Thom and Howard continue their conversation, discussing Howard leaving the music business (for the first time) and moving to LA. Once in Southern California, Howard pursued his original profession of being a writer. He wrote for LA Times Magazine and worked as a collaborator and interviewer on a book, meeting with some pretty famous folks along the way.

Realizing that he enjoyed his community of friends in Oregon, he moved back to Eugene and started managing a few NW bands. This stint in the music business lasted awhile, but Howard decided to get back to writing, completing a Science Fiction novel called “When All Else Fails”. He’d had this idea in his brain as a teenager and produced an amazing work-of art that is just the first in a series of books that he’s going to complete.

Thom sits down to talk to his friend and mentor Howard Libes. Howard was the manager for the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies during the explosion of the Zoot Suit Riot album and the band getting signed to Mojo Records.

Howard talks about why he ended up in Eugene and how the artist collective used to include a slew of anyone participating in creating art: Musicians, painters and writers. This got Howard into the musical circles with Steve Perry who formed the Daddies and went on to national success with his music.

Howard tells some captivating stories and offers insight into the music industry from back in the 90’s. Thom and Howard begin the comparing and contrasting in this episode, but do most of that in Part 2 which will be out next week.

Rich and Andrew sit down and deconstruct the song “Minding My Clarity” from the Henry’s Child album “Clearly Confused”.

Andrew intended his lyrics to be about defining your own reality and creating your identity. Rich remembers a review for “Clearly Confused” where the author said that Henry’s Child “lulls you in and grabs you by the throat”, which is discussed by the crew in this episode.

This extraordinarily simple song resonates with many fans, especially on a lyrical level because many folks can relate to “not being lost, just looking around”.

There is a level of authenticity that this song that brings up in the differences between writing songs back in the 90’s, where we sanded the edges at live shows and how we write now, being mostly in the Recording Studio working on a new record.

We talk about some of the most important lines like: “I am the center of all I survey” and “I’ll take the credit for every success and the blame for each failure to be...” These are about acceptance and understanding, truly understanding, what it means to take responsibility.

We discuss a secret access to the balcony for the long view but unable to control when that occurs, which is part of what makes writing songs in Henry’s Child so great. Enjoy this thoroughly nerdy interpretation of the first song on “Clearly Confused”.

Rich and Thom down to talk with Brian Forster. Brian is the lead vocalist for Seven Second Circle, a band that is comprised of four members of Henry’s Child. Henry’s Child met Brian at the Westside Station in Salem, specifically through the bar manager Jason Coleman.

Jason had a huge affinity for music and brought together the most many Eugene bands like Floater and Jollymon, as well as staples like Aggrobatch and, of course, Henry’s Child.

Brain talks about how he got into music and how his Mom’s boyfriend Denny greatly influenced his musical taste, exposing him to Kiss and Van Halen. Brain discusses early versions of his band “Taxi Cab Floors”. This is how Brian met the guys in Henry’s Child and even participated in shows at the Westside Station and The WOW Hall by helping sing “Handguns and Chainsaws” from the stage.

We wrap up this great conversation with the story of how Seven Second Circle got the “Divide” record pressed and how important the niche of Progressive Rock became for the band. In this episode you learn what name Seven Second Circle almost chose as an alternative band name.

In today’s “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast, Thom and Andrew continue the conversation with Elemental Records creator Jon Boldt. This Podcast, being part 2, picks up where Episode 22 left off: Elemental Records had moved to Eugene, signed Floater and was on their way to blowing up.

Jon tells the story of how Sonic X-Plosion came about, giving credit to Steve Woodward for the idea of having a contest to choose bands. Jon talks about signing Henry’s Child and the controversy around bringing a band into the fold that already had a following and a CD.

Jon has a great conversation about “role reversal” where the Label-guy is acting like a rock-star and the band is all business. We end this conversation about the music business and what Jon’s been up to since selling the label back in 1999. This was a fun Podcast for anyone who is a fan of Northwest music.

In today’s “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast, Thom and Andrew sit down with Elemental Records creator Jon Boldt. Jon Boldt ended up signing Henry’s Child to Elemental Records after they won the first Sonic X-Plosion in 1996. From then on, Jon has remained friends with the band and is considered part of the Henry’s Child family.

In this first of two parts, Jon talks about the birth of Elemental Records. This all came from a genuine love of music that Jon demonstrated by being an independent show promoter in Portland. This led to getting introduced to several up-and-coming bands in the Pacific Northwest and putting out the compilation “Northwest Ungrunge”. Just a few months later, the Jollymon record “Sailing” was released and Elemental was on its way to blowing up.

Jon moved the record company from Portland to Eugene, which seemed like a counter-intuitive idea at the time but ended up benefiting the label in the long run.

Listen to how a series of meetings about distribution with the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies manager led to a long-time alliance that shaped a good portion of the Eugene music scene in the 90’s. Enjoy this first of two parts of the Northwest (and Eugene staple) Elemental Records’ history.

In today’s “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast episode we continue to explore the Jarrett’s history with Henry’s Child. Today’s episode starts with Andy Makin leaving to go back to the UK. After having completed the final Henry’s Child record “Satellite Trampoline 3” (in 1999), Jarrett left Oregon and moved to Arizona to attend the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Part the requirement for Jarrett to graduate was to work in a Recording Studio. Jarrett chose to move to Los Angeles where he worked at Studio Atlantis and within just weeks was offered a full-time job.

By this time, Rich, Thom and Doug had started a band with Brian Forster called First Sleep. Jarrett comes on board to do the record called “The Hours In Between” and moved back in 2009 to join First Sleep. After consulting together and reviewing the batch of songs we had written, we chose to rename the band Seven Second Circle and released an album called “Divide”.

We end this two-part Podcast with Jarrett telling the story how he recently joined Henry’s Child and gives an update on the progress of the new record. We then play the first track publicly for the new Henry’s Child record.

On today’s “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast episode, Rich and Andrew sit down to talk with Jarrett Holly. Jarrett is the Sound Engineer, Recording Architect and now Guitar Player, that helped Henry’s Child from 1995 to its present incarnation. Along the way there have been several other bands, like Attack Ships on Fire, First Sleep and Seven Second Circle that Jarrett has recorded and Produced. Some of those bands he also lends his Songwriting and Performing skills to.

A quick introduction through Thom joining Henry’s Child in 1995 brought Jarrett into the fold. Over the years he picked-up first live sound engineering skills from some top-notch sound guys at the WOW Hall and recording skills from such local legends as Bill Barnett of Gung-Ho Studios. Soon Jarrett had moved from behind the live show mixing board to the studio, helping Henry’s Child complete the masterpiece of “Clearly Confused”.

This Podcast is the first of two parts that chronicle Jarrett’s career in Sound, from going to early Henry’s Child shows with Thom all the way through today, recording and doing Live Sound for huge events.

Andrew sits down with Greg Gillispie of Hyding Jekyll for today’s “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast. Greg tells the story of how he chose to get into music and how he realized early in life that “music is a set of circular noises”.

Greg tells the story of how an Elemental Records Artist show for a local radio station (KTEC) got him back into music. Inspired by Floater, Jollymon and Henry’s Child he created a band and setup local shows in Klamath Falls. It was at this point that Greg realized being a musician was attainable.

We hear how Greg ended up in Eugene, moving from Klamath Falls and what it took from inception to the creation of Hyding Jekyll.

Andrew talks about how it was Greg’s show (a Hyding Jekyll CD Release show) that ultimately helped reunite Henry’s Child back in June of 2014.

Greg talks about his acoustic projects (Strange Dichotomy and Possible Human Origins) and how they differ between the harder, more aggressive music of the Hyding Jekyll. Greg lets us in on the future endeavours of each band. Enjoy this candid conversation with a Eugene music Veteran.

Thom sits down with Carey Rich, vocalist and bass player for the band Jollymon. Thom learns how Jollymon chose to get back together in 2016. We talk about how Carey got into music and how his parents were not only influential, but how they supported him learning music.

Carey struggled in school but by 11th grade was sent to Washington DC where he learned theory on drums, guitar and bass. His music teacher in High School suggested that he come out to the West Coast. And Carey did! He tells a story about staying with some “nuclear hippies” led him from Portland to Eugene...Yes, it’s a good story about a community towel.

Carey tells the tale of how he answered an ad at a music store (Karl’s ad), Karl knew Greg and they ended up jamming together and starting a band. Carey tells us how they chose the name “Jollymon” in quick preparation for a show at what would soon become “John Henry’s”, a classic Eugene live-music staple.

Carey calls Jollymon both “Lucky” and “Charmed”. He tells the story of playing one epic party in Portland where they caught the eye of Sweaty Nipples, who got them to open a Valentine’s Day WOW Hall show. This quickly propelled them to headlining large local venues like Crystal Ballroom and Roseland (both in Portland).

Carey talks about their new Download “Tsunami” and we play the entire song on the Podcast. This was a fun conversation that kept us both laughing. Enjoy this interstellar Space Metal Sermon with my friend Carey Rich.

In this episode of the “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast, Rich sits down and talks to Kevin Richardson. He’s the singer and guitar player for the band “Vial… Experiment”. Kevin has been in the Eugene Music Scene for a long time and started out as a 15 year old Henry’s Child fan, often attending WOW Hall shows and used this passion to start playing his own music.

Rich and Kevin discuss why “battle of the bands” can be damaging to healthy competition. They talk about what drives audiences to live shows and ultimately why grassroots promotion is vital to the existence of live music.

In this episode of the “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast, Rich sits down and talks to Sebastian Phoenix of the band Othrys.

They talk about the “missing scene” of the 2000’s and how many of the active artists of today just barely missed the heyday of Elemental Records.

Sebastian talks about how far Othrys is in the Studio, getting ready to release a new album (more than likely to be an EP) and the unexpected perks of being an unsigned band. Rich and Sebastian discuss the D.I.Y. aspect of music and why it’s hard to not rely on others for your own musical success.

We talk about the Ash Street Saloon and the impact of gentrification in Portland and Eugene when it comes to musical venues. We play the song “Retrograde” by Othrys. Enjoy this intimate discussion with a longtime friend.

In this episode of the “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast, Andrew and Rich sit down with Kevin Richardson (from Vial...Experiment) and Sebastian Phoenix (from Othrys) to talk about Influences.

They discuss how they got into music and what their first experience of a mosh pit was. One singer got into music singing the first verse from the theme from “Cheers” and one got into singing after being exposed to Alice in Chains. Both bands are working on new records and we get into how far along they are in the process. Andrew and Rich discuss the difference between musicians and entertainers and each person gives their take on the constantly changing music industry.

The conversation crests at a discussion about how music, and specifically how the Eugene music scene, is very generational. This is a great Podcast from some very awesome musicians.

In this episode of the “Am I Crazy Or Am I Raving” Henry’s Child Podcast, Andrew and Rich get together to continue the discussion about Andrew’s “between the bands”.

Andrew talks about playing with Kris and Quinn Cardwell, a couple brothers who played in “The Ineffectuals”. This started a “studio band” we called “Quoting Scripture”. After listening to the Soundgarden album “King Animal”, Rich contacts Andrew and says that we should do another heavy band. This birthed “Mnemonic Machines”, with Quinn, Rich, Kris, Andrew and Thom.

We play the song “Too Much Wine” from the Mnemonic Machines demos recorded by Jarrett Holly.

The leads up to the reunion show story where Mnemonic Machines morphed into the newly reunited Henry’s Child.

In this episode of the “Am I Crazy Or Am I Raving” Henry’s Child Podcast, Andrew and Rich get together to talk about Andrew’s “between the bands”.

This starts with Andrew’s story of getting back into music with the acoustic project “A Memory of Green”. Players in this project include Colton Williams of Northwest Royale and Dale Bradley of the Eugene Symphony and the Oregon Mozart Players.

We play the Memory of Green version of Henry’s Child “Honestly”, complete with Dale’s amazing Cello parts. This prompts a discussion of how many different iterations this song has been through and how it showcases the musicianship of all those involved.

In this episode of the “Am I Crazy Or Am I Raving” Henry’s Child Podcast, Thom and Rich sit down to talk about the “bands between the bands”. These are the bands between the original incarnation of Henry’s Child and the reunited lineup.

The story goes a little something like this...

Thom and Rich moved to California, looking for a place to “reboot” the band. Ultimately this didn’t work so the guys moved Back to Oregon. Once moved back, Rich and Jarrett created a studio in Springfield with the help of Jarrett’s Dad. All during this time Rich is writing songs by himself and we ended up recording a handful of ideas, of which we play a song called “Another Point of View”.

We talk about building a recording studio in Springfield and the inception of Attack Ships on Fire. We play the song “Jeffrey Dahmer” from the first Attack Ships on Fire album. Thom and Rich recall quitting Attack Ships on Fire and starting First Sleep, with an old friend of the band Brian Forster. First Sleep recorded a demo and an album called “The Hours In Between”.

First Sleep asks Jarrett to join the band and the five guys become known as “Seven Second Circle”, spending a few years making the album “Divide”. This is part 1 of a 2 part Podcast about the bands in between Henry’s Child incarnations.

In this episode of the “Am I Crazy Or Am I Raving” Henry’s Child Podcast Tobby and Thom sit down to talk about everything music-related.

They start with the story of how Tobby joined Henry’s Child: A recommendation from a friend (Bishop Freeman of band “Toxic Zombie”) and the reputation of the band were two big factors that contributed to Tobby saying “Yes!”.

Tobby tells the story of how he moved from Myrtle Beach to Eugene, joining “Grynch” and eventually putting together “We Have Guns”. Tobby rekindles a story about how he created a website for the Eugene studio Central Node and got offered a job in Portland, where he eventually moved to a few years ago. We play the songs “Toy Soldier” from “Grynch” and “Dead Rising” from “We Have Guns”.

Tobby discussed the amount of instruments he plays, including a degree in Flamenco Guitar, and why he is passionate about drums.

We talk about the momentum that swung him into taking the gig with Henry’s Child. This includes what it took to honor the original recordings, when playing them for live shows, and ultimately how that affected his playing on the new album. Tobby talks about what it took to keep the sound as close to Henry’s Child as possible, while putting his own spin on it at the same time.

We end this episode with Tobby mentioning an important upcoming gig on 3/23/18 in Lebanon. It’s a benefit for Jason Rowe (from “Strange Dichotomy” and “30 Pound Test”), who was recently diagnosed with cancer. The benefit is two nights, with 10 bands each night.

In this episode of the “Am I Crazy Or Am I Raving” Henry’s Child Podcast where we continue the origin story of Henry’s Child.

We start with an examination of Jeff Reilly’s drum beats and how integral he was to the inception of a Henry’s Child “sound”. This also includes how good of a vocalist he was and we demonstrate it with a snippet of “And Then It Came To Me”, an unreleased song. Rich recalls the first show in December of 1993 and starting to record “Drink Me” in March of 1994.

Andrew and Rich confess that they were the ultimate Geek band who would often play “Magic The Gathering” before shows with friends and fans.

Then there was a choice made to replace Kris on bass. Andrew and Rich go through the list of possible Kris Holm replacements, eventually landing on Thom. Thom tells the story of frequent lunches at Pizza Pete’s in Eugene where he was asked to join Henry’s Child.

Thom recalls the first few weeks in Henry’s Child and the CD Release show at John Henry’s, including hitting the wrong note on the first song of the first show he played with the band.

We remember Bruce Hartnell (from the Detonators) at John Henry’s and how Tuesday and Wednesday nights were the bands bread-and-butter. Andrew tells the story of how playing at the Satyricon in Portland paved the way for Henry’s Child to play Salem through the unlikely meeting of the band “Solace”. This leads to the beginning of Henry’s Child getting popular. We end this conversation talking about entering the Sonic X-Plosion and getting signed to Elemental Records.

This is the origin story of Henry’s Child, as told by Andrew Smith and Rich Clinton:

Andrew Smith met Rob Wynia at a Dungeons and Dragons game. They bonded over one quoting a Rush lyric and the other finishing it. Yes, the Midi-chlorian was high for both of them. With Andrew’s poetry and Rob’s old P-Bass in hand, they started out to put a band together. With Andy Dent on guitar and Pete Cornett on drums, they were formed as Henry’s Child. Choosing a different direction for the band, they parted ways with their guitar player eventually landing with Ed Cole. Ed (who played on the first “Mr. Bungle” record) couldn’t tour due to family duties, which left them with a really good demo but without a long-term guitar player.

After this change, they tried out 27 guitar players (mostly metal guys), eventually meeting Rich Clinton.

After moving to Oregon, Rich played in a county cover band and was looking for an original project to join. He found and answered an ad at Andy’s Music (in Eugene) that was placed by Andrew and Rob.

After getting the news that Pete was bowing out of the band, Andrew raced over to Rich’s house to tell him the news. That night Andrew and Rich bonded over a song called “In The Basement”, that Rich had written. This was the first song that Andrew and Rich wrote together and we play a little of this unreleased gem in this Podcast.

Without a drummer, the guys met Dann Pacheco and start to play with him. Rob leaves the band to work on what would soon become “Floater”. Faced once again with another space to fill, the guys implored Andrew’s roommate, Kris Holm, to play bass. This incarnation became “Algernon”.

After parting ways with Dann, it was Pete Cornett that sat on a doorstep for 20 minutes listening to pounding drums to meet Jeff Reilly, who went on to become the drummer for Rich, Andrew and Kris. This solidified the line-up of Henry’s Child the recorded the demo tape “Drink Me” and the 1995 release “Mumbles and Screams”.

In this Episode of “Am I Crazy or Am I just Raving”, we talk about how Henry’s Child writes songs: What ignites the creative spark when it comes to songwriting. It’s not so obvious, but experience mixed with focused action wins out over any “technique” that we could describe.

We get into a history of Henry’s Child songwriting, two seemingly different polarities with two similar consistencies: Parental support and getting kicked out of previous bands.

Rich, who found out his musical ability started when he was 7 in front of a piano at his aunt’s house, was 14 when he got his first guitar. Andrew started writing Poetry in 9th grade as a means of self-expression. The difference between Rich and Andrew is that Andrew had music in the home whereas Rich had support from his parents and even a neighbor growing up.

Rich sums up songwriting in two words: Just Play. This is quickly followed by the sage advice of “Be a slave to the song” and “get out of your own way”.

Next we discuss “the talk”. It’s the talk we need to have when bandmates aren’t as good of a fit as we thought they were.

Andrew talks about his first band: “Floppin’ Dead Katz” and how he played one show and got kicked out of the band. Rich recounts how he got kicked out of a band for being overweight. Even after getting booted from that band, “Risque” continued to play all of Rich’s songs.

Ultimately the secret ingredient to good songwriting is finding the right people and learning trust - If you search for the song together it will be found.

The song “Headlights” was a fan favorite for decades. Skirting a hybrid combination of heavy guitar riffs and sometimes strange vocal inflections, Andrew describes his inspiration behind the name. We discuss the infamous “Pumping Pumping Pumping” move that Andrew does during live shows and how Andrew’s physicality on stage can occasionally be problematic to his fellow bandmates.

“Headlights” is a moody song, there is no doubt about that. It’s very nature is the tension and release between anxiety and pondering prudence.

Andrew’s interpretation of getting labeled (at a young age) and his connection to his own sanity is what drove the lyrical content in a way that could only be defined as a peering into self-exploration and questioning one’s own sanity.

After a discussion about the difference between psychopaths and narcissists we talk about the crescendo of Jeff’s drums and building to the outro, with some quick snippets of music. This Podcast ends with talking about labeling people and feelings… The heavy-handed humor for a heavy subject that is the Henry’s Child song “Headlights”.

In our second “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast we discuss how “I Will” faded from the Henry’s Child Set List for a long time and became the number one fan-requested song from “Mumbles and Screams”. “I Will” also had the most amount of changes and additions from any other original song, all the way from a Korn-esque metal intro to the induction of Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” and Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs”.

We discuss why “I Will” was often referred to as the “Angry Positive Reinforcement Song”. Andrew discusses the duality of Will, telling his personal definition that is a blended meaning: A declaration of Action and having the power and strength to overcome something (especially a personal challenge). Along with this double-meaning is the intensity and fierceness of being a commitment to change.

We then have a deep discussion about Jeff Reilly’s unique drum beats and how the drums construct the build-up of the song, beautifully landing this tune from chorus to outro.

To wrap it up, we discuss making change and transformation in your life. How the internal versus external struggle occurs and is addressed in the song “I Will”. This is Andrew’s personal challenges being the two verses of the song and the “How to” as the outro of the song. It is fierce because change, at some level, is (not easy) but yet incredibly simple.

In this first Podcast of “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving”, Thom and Andrew look at how and why Henry’s Child got back together after 17 years. Andrew talks briefly about the bands in between the original incarnation of Henry’s Child and the reunion show in 2014. He then tells the story: Inspired by the Soundgarden record “King Animal”, Rich and Andrew got the fire back to play heavy music again. This birthed “Mnemonic Machines”, with Quinn & Kris Cardwell (formerly of “The Ineffectuals”), Rich Clinton, Andrew Smith and Thom Tessandori.

Greg Gillespie (of “Hyding Jekyll”) offered Mnemonic Machines a really great show right at the time that band dissipated. In order to fill a slot at the WOW Hall, with less than 4 weeks rehearsal time, Henry’s Child got back together and learned some fan-requested songs.

Andrew got inspired by seeing teenagers singing along with songs from the “Mumbles and Screams” record - originally released in 1995. This is when Henry’s Child, as it’s true collective, chose to keep playing shows until people stop showing up. Andrew tells the “drunk guy” story and how the impact of music stays with you, creating those truly frozen moments. This speaks directly to the presence and the power of music.

Andrew also recounts his first memory of singing into the mirror and how Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust” lead him down a path of greater appreciation of music.
