Welcome to Trinity Laban Crosscurrent, a music and dance podcast brought to you by London's Creative Conservatoire. This six-part series hosted by composition alum Will Howarth, unearths interesting and divergent stories in the performing arts through conversations with students, staff, alumni and friends of Trinity Laban.
In the third episode of this six-part Trinity Laban Crosscurrent series, we hand over to guest student hosts Dan Lane, Finton Flynn, George Pertwee, Holly McConville, Maisie Meehan and John Sturt who are in conversation with Head of CoLab Joe Townsend about what collaboration means and share their worst date stories, inspired by Valentine's Day.
CoLab, our annual two-week cross-faculty Festival of Creativity, is a time of imagination, experimentation and risk where students are empowered to take control of their creative learning.
This year over 1000 students, staff and visiting artists have joined forces to create, develop and rehearse 115 diverse projects in response to the theme of ‘what I care about’.

Wilhelmina Ojanen
Born in Tampere, Finland, and raised in Santiago, Chile, dance maker Wilhelmina studied on Trinity Laban's BA (Hons) Contemporary Dance course from 2014 – 2017, and completed her MA dance Performance Programme in 2018 as a member of Transitions Dance Company.
Alongside her training she has worked with Hagit Yakira for the ‘’On falling and recovering’’ community project. Wilhelmina has also worked with the makers of Reykjavik Dance Festival in 2015.
Wilhelmina is passionate about choreography and is excited to be able to develop her artistic voice as a Young Associate Artist at Sadler’s Wells.
Miia Makila
Born in Finland, performer and freelance dance artist Miia studied on Trinity Laban's BA (Hons) Contemporary Dance course from 2014 – 2017. After graduating, she has worked with an emerging physical theatre company Meta4dance, Lydia Touliatou and composer Andrew Marriott.
Currently Miia is working with Wilhelmina Ojanen for the Sadler’s Wells Young Associates commission. She is a company dance for The Natashas Project and is also a founding member for a female collective LIPS which provides integrative, diverse and multi-disciplinary arts event to promote positive social changes.
The main interests of Miia’s creative practice include humanitarian issues and bringing dance to a wider audience and communities.
Musical Theatre writing partners Caroline Wigmore and Jen Green
Caroline and Jen have been writing musicals together since meeting at Goldsmiths University, where they were both awarded MAs in writing for musical theatre in 2011. Their shows include The Gingerbread Man (Singapore Repertory Theatre 2019), Michael Morpurgo's Mimi and the Mountain Dragon (ongoing national tour 2016-current), Children of the New Forest (YMT 2017), The Legend of White Bear Lake (YMT UK 2016), The Bachelor Girls (YMT UK 2015, Weston College 2016), and Van Winkle - a Folk Musical (S&S Award finalist 2014).
Caroline is an American/British composer, book-writer and lyricist. She is particularly drawn to stories that feature unusual musical idioms, folk stories and historical fiction.
Jen is a London-based composer and orchestrator. She has a particular interest in theatre and musical theatre, and has worked across a variety of projects for stage, screen and radio. You can find out more about her independent work on her website.

In the first episode of this six-part Trinity Laban Crosscurrent series, host Will Howarth talks to members of the Trinity Laban community about what Black History Month means to them and how they are creating work which champions and recognises black excellence in the music and dance industries. Also, a walk through Greenwich with author and historian S.I Martin uncovers some of the significant black histories of this famous Royal borough of London. Uchenna Ngwe Born in North London, Uchenna Ngwe studied oboe and cor anglais at Trinity College of Music, gaining a BMus (Hons) and later returning on a scholarship for a postgraduate diploma. Since then, her playing has taken her across Europe, Africa and Asia. She is currently studying on the Research Degree Programme in Creative Practice at Trinity Laban and is a co-founder of chamber music group The Decus Ensemble. Decus Ensemble is a flexible and diverse group of professional classical musicians who work together to promote the works of less well-known composers throughout classical music history, for a range of instruments. As part of the plainsightSOUND project that launched in 2018, they are currently exploring the music and histories of Black Caribbean and African classical composers with links to Britain. Aaron Chaplin Born and raised in London, Aaron graduated from the BA (Hons) Contemporary Dance degree at Trinity Laban in 2017. From here he joined Phoenix Dance Theatre as an Apprentice Dancer through Northern School of Contemporary Dance’s professional apprenticeship scheme, becoming a junior dancer in August 2018. Phoenix Dance Theatre creates dynamic, diverse and athletic work that embodies the spirit of a multicultural Britain. They are the UK’s longest standing contemporary dance company outside London and regularly tour nationally and internationally. Gary Crosby OBE is a Trinity Laban Honorary Fellow and the first ever jazz musician to receive The Queen's Medal for Music. He is co-founder and artistic director of Tomorrow's Warriors, an organisation that nurtures young jazz talent.
Trinity Laban held an event to celebrate its 15-year friendship with Gary, featuring performances from an all-star lineup of British jazz musicians. In this podcast, we hear them play and share their memories and messages for Gary.

'Drumstick' is being performed at 14:30 and 19:30 on THU 20 & FRI 21 JUN at the Laban Theatre. It is featured as part of Insiders/Outsiders Festival, celebrating the cultural impact on Britain of refugees fleeing Nazi Europe.
