The 2026 World Cup is in the books, and with it this edition of the World Cup of Tea (well, there might be a little bit more in the next couple of weeks...). So if you're already beginning to have that slightly lost, a little bit down, pinching yourself that it was all real as the every day takes you back in its grasp, well, we have at least a couple of takeaways to give you solace!
We have reached our destination - at least the tournament part of it (the WCT still has at least one, maybe two, episodes left). So it's time to total up World Cup Bingo and then make the big selection for the big game! Oh, and an "old friend" of Zeff's gets a TACO.
Day 38 of the World Cup of Tea, and it's also the 3rd Place game, well, Zeff will have to find something else to talk about. So he's enlisted AI to script the episode. There's also TACOs to give out and some hot dog business.
Frustrated with the use of VAR during this World Cup? You're not alone. Fortunately Zeff is on hand with some solutions - not little ticky-tacky stuff, no, big stuff, real big stuff, that can save VAR from itself.
England earn a trip to Miami and the glamour of a (high) stakes battle with France to earn the right to be the 2026 World Cup's.....third place team! No doubt David Beckham will be along for what is sure to be an emotional, rip-roaring football classic......

A 64-team World Cup is coming? Or is it just some misdirection from the President, no not that one - our one, Mr Infantino himself (so yes, it's coming). And a word on the passing of actor Sam Neill.
Math guru and soccer coach Joey stops by to talk statistics in soccer and if and how they entice the general sports fan into following the beautiful game. Or if the game truly lends itself to the kind of statistical interpretation that comes so naturally to other sports.

England v Norway later in the day, and Zeff is explaining what it means whenver you hear a football fan or media member refer to a "Golden Generation." And then it's a look back at the 1981 England-Norway World Cup qualifier and the famous bit of commentary that comes from it.
Our final book review from our venerable literary correspondent, Peter. His selection is "Soccer IQ" by Danny Blank - a book about the skills of the beautiful game written by a coach. But as we discover, this is not some dry coaching manual....
Nathan has returned to give his take on FIFA and their seemingly outsized influence on the game that we all love. Is their modus operandi smudging the romantic lens through which we view the sport? Is there a different way we could all come together and celebrate football without the pricetag that has been set on it?
The round of 16 concludes, sending the tournament into its first 'off' day - a day without a game. Colombia-Switzerland, the last game of the round, was decided by the only penalty shoot-out of the round, leading Zeff to ponder the alternatives.
It's the end of the road for the US, as all three host nations now watch the rest of the tournament from the comfort of their own homes.

This time it's Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelas heading to Italy for "Running with the Wolves." What's that? You didn't know they even had a team?

No wonder you've got an energy crisis your side of the water. But us British... we're used to a bit more vitality, imagination, a touch of the Dunkirk spirit, know what I mean? "Shut up you long streak of paralyzed p!ss. What I'm looking for is someone who can contribute to what England has given to the world. Croatia took on Portugal in a Round of 32 game featuring two heavyweights of the beautiful game, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric. Only one can leave as a winner.....
England live on the edge in their match against the Democratic Republic of Congo, giving Zeff flashbacks to a darker time......
Day 21 and our friend Nathan has returned to look at some off-the-field considerations of the knockout stages. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe keeps scoring and a duck can't get a ticket......
The knockout is in full swing and in reality that this is when the tournament really begins. Get ready for all the cliches about "It's win or go home" or "There's no tomorrow for one of these teams" and of course the penalty shoot-out will be making an appearance. If it hasn't already (ahem, Germany....)

Book review day, and Peter is back, sharing with us his thoughts on James Montague's "Thirty-one Nil" which looks at the world's game away from the mainstage slate of the Brazil's, France's and Spain's that hog our attention. In light of the expanded field this year, it is, as Peter points out, more than timely reading.
A win - or even a draw - sends the hosts to the knockout stages of the Mundial. And with all the excitement and hype, what would, and this World Cup, mean for the future of the beautiful game in the US? As seems to be forever the case, the media are wondering about soccer's ultimate destiny on these shores. But is it time to stop asking, or even care, what the answer is?

The first round is done and the tournament should really kick in to gear over the next week, as teams now have a real sense of their direction of travel. And it's the same for show, as we follow up on some thoughts and lay out the next few days.
The 23rd edition of the Mundial ends its first seven days of action and Zeff decides whether or not this expanded edition is in fact better than what's gone before. He's also getting in touch with his Scottish heritage (no pun intended although one of the upsides of a kilt is the accessibility). Yes, that's right another episode! Eric and Zeff are here to clear the, ahem, backlog, as they total up the scores from last year's Summer Movie competition. Think of this as sort a half-time show between Parts 1 and 2 of this year's Summer Movie Preview.
What's that? You mean, you haven't listened to Part 1 yet? Shame on you. And there the guys were, feeling bad about not putting out new episodes for the past year......

Regardless, they're back! Eric and Zeff return with Part 1 of their annual Summer Movie Preview, watching trailers, talking some, and then telling you what to watch. And then talking some more. Eric and Zeff are back on the internet airwaves with their infamous (Zeff tries to explain) summer tradition of previewing the summer cinematic releases by watching only the trailers. From June to the end of August, they have you (pretty much) covered, with sequels, prequels, comic book films and films from books.
And as is the tradition, they're also competing to see who is the most prescient.....

It's the greatest show on earth (except you have to make your own popcorn) - it's Part 1 of the Summer Movie Preview!
A guest on the show as Eric and Zeff try out Microsoft's AI, ChatGPT. How intelligent is it really? And how artificial is it? Questioned about ducks, it most certainly has the answers, though when asked about the podcast, well, it has some opinions....And there's music, as the guys debate Pink Floyd's seminal album, The Dark Side of the Moon.
Remember our Summer Movie Preview? From June and July of last year? No? Then what kind of a fan are you? Because if you do remember, that annual Atlantic Voice tradition is also somewhat of a competition. And now, it's time to run the totals and see which our of hosts is the more....predictive. Will Zeff turn around years of defeat; or will Eric once again prove to be more....prescient?

Some musings on film director James Cameron and the latest Avatar film (not that he's passed or anything), whether or not Leonardo DiCaprio should've survived in Titanic (spoiler: he didn't). And a rundown of recent celebrity deaths.
The World Cup and The World Cup of Tea reach their end. And with that, Zeff has just one question - how will you remember the 2022 edition of the tournament. Will it be the games, the host, your fig business even, that'll you be packing away in your memory to help you recall the last month? Or maybe nothing at all. Do big events mark the passage of time, or just take up the time? Or is Day 30 just the time to leave the World Cup behind....
World Cup Final Day, and an early start (depending where you live, of course!). Talk of another World Championship that has just started, an real (or imaginary breakfast?), and, wait for it....a "Final" pick.
Day 28 and as promised earlier on the World Cup of Tea, we setting you straight with all the references that have been used, including a classic British gangster movie, and an old-school Mini car chase. And then there's puppets, taking off in rockets..... (Puppets or not, some great music and editing, who says this s*#t isn' exciting.....?)
Zeff takes a quick look at the "curiosity" that is the 3rd Place Match and questions the precise point of it all. Not that a 3rd place is a bad thing - on the contrary Zeff extols the virtues of his own.....
On the last book review, Zeff looks at David Peace's "historical novel" - or as the Atlantic Voice shall be calling such things, "Fictionalized Fact" (copyright Atlantic Voice!). It tells the story of Brian Clough's ill-fated 44-day tenure as Leeds United manager back in 1975. As The London Times said of the book "Probably the best novel ever written about sport." But if don't trust them, Zeff will convince you.
Day 25, and Zeff explains how he's been able to keep an eye on the World Cup thus far. Plus musings on workplace hierarchy, and being confused by cold weather and Christmas. All at the same time as the games!!!
The last week, so the last round of reviews of documentaries and books. Today, the grand-daddy of all sports "behind-the-scenes" documentaries, "An Impossible Job." The first and still the best, "An Impossible Job" joins then-England manager Graham Taylor as he struggles to get the team through World Cup qualifying. Battered by the press, circumstances beyond his control, Taylor struggles to retain his resolve and natural decency (this the man the British press derided as a turnip) as events conspire against him. This is the forerunner of everything you see today, yet more honest and never bettered.
It is Day 23 (Zeff mistakenly refers to it as Day 22, but hey, this far in, an excusable error!). As the tournament enters its last week, Zeff takes a quick look at some of the books about football that didn't make his own "essentials" list. And with the semi-finals looming, time for a selection. For your fig trading, of course.
There's a leaky toilet in the house, so it's a quick check of Youtube and then a trip to the hardware store. Along the way, Zeff learns a little bit about aging and the journey that is the collection of knowledge and experiences....
Brazil are going home, and so Zeff feels that he should clarify his previously stated position. And so he's falling on his sword and admitting he's a hater. With some caveats, of course. Whether you are convinced or not, well that's on you. Also, some Olympic memories, and a quick tribute to Jet Black, recently passed drummer of The Stranglers.
Book review time. Today's title - "The Glory Game" by Hunter Davies. Now, before you click away, realize, without any pause or procrastination, that this is the very best ever book written about a professional sports team. There are others that have come close, but this is the essential look behind-the-curtain at the inner workings of a professional outfit. Yes, it makes the Cup of Tea because it's soccer; what's not for question is its quality.
Day 19, and how was your first day without a game to watch? Zeff ponders the ideal gap between games, and then delves back into his childhood with a look at an old sticker album (scan through if you're unconvinced by Zeff's point). But never fear, there will be a left turn....Plus the first two quarter-final picks for fig traders out there.
Our documentary review series continues with "The Four Year Plan" - a behind-the-scenes look at Queens Park Rangers FC, as the club from the neigbhourhood known as White City look to make the jump into the English Premier League. See what happens when ownership and operations struggle to get on the same page....
Zeff takes a look at the first ever "recyclable" (is that even a word, never mind is it the right word for the situation?), the first ever "recyclable" stadium, Stadium 974, built for, and only for, this World Cup. A feat of modern engineering no doubt, but Zeff, as he is wont to do, has some questions about its real legacy. Talking of legacy, one of the last two teams to play in the stadium, Brazil, also has Zeff....pondering....
England are through and Zeff is a little boisterous. So something a little different today as Zeff discusses why, when it comes to sports' movies, football - this kind - is a ways down the list. And the Tip of the Day, well, it's a selection....
One of our "home" nations is heading home, and Zeff gives his verdict on their campaign. As well as taking a look at the one-time masterplan for the success of the US Men's team at the World Cup - Project 2010. And no, it didn't include dyed hair and man buns....Also a flashback to improve your mood.
Day 14 of the 2022 World Cup, and by the calendar we're pretty much at the midpoint of the event. But Zeff asks - does it feel like that? And how's your perception of time and life outside of the enormous bubble that is the world's biggest (sporting) event? Time to discuss how our everyday reality has been hijacked by men kicking a ball about. Plus a review of the Thai cave rescue movie "13 Lives."
By rights, Day 13 of the World Cup of Tea should be titled Day 12 - Redux, but "Addicted" is the title of the book in our second review. Considering that Group E played out in the same dramatic fashion as Day 12, it's probably also the best word to describe any neutral fan out there. Of course, if you're a fan on the wrong end of results, well, I'll let you pick your own descriptor of your state of mind when the final whistle blows.
The latest set of final round-robin matches in the group stage, and the first truly wild pair of games to decide who survives. Talk of tie-breakers, shredded nerves, and worrying more about the "other game" rather than your own. Oh it it's football alright. Bloody Hell!
England and USA are the survivors of Group B and on to the Round of 16 and the knockout stages. And while Zeff wants (most of) you to have a great day and enjoy the games, he also wants (most of) you to temper your expectations and keep a little perspective and not to behave like a hysterical Harry Styles (England) fan.....
Our documentary series continues with this look at "Orient - Club for a Fiver" featuring the, how should we put it, expressive personality that was their manager back in 1995, John Sitton. Oh, and bring your dinner......
Day 9 and a quick look back as the Germans begin their escape act. And then on to Youtube as Zeff extols the virtues of the web and the glory of Dutch footballing legend, Dennis Bergkamp. And yes, that France '98 goal....(via Youtube, of course; and a familiar voice...)
On this, the first in a series of "Must-Read" football books, we begin with a professional player's diary - with Eamon Dunphy's "Only A Game." And while it's always been Zeff's position that player autobiography just aren't that interesting, this one proves to be a compelling caveat to that view. Plus a Canadian is protected by his maple leaf....
Week 1 of the 22nd World Cup in the book, not to mention the seventh day of the World Cup of Tea. But not resting, Zeff has a couple of things that have caught his eye, including a predictive otter, and 5 Kims in a row...
Zeff is going way back into his teenage years to share the one World Cup tradition that has continued into indeterminate middle-age. And no, there'll be no photos of plumber's butt.......
Day 5 and Thanksgiving Day in the US. So with a slight pause, Zeff takes a look at the contradictions of FIFA's choice of host for this World Cup, in the process discovering that this year is not necessarily an outlier when it comes to the conflicted narrative of sport somehow improving society. And with that, how should we the fan react to the quandary that is the event's 22nd edition?
Day 4 and the first upset of the tournament but don't fill out your bingo card just yet. And then meet Barry Davies, Zeff's favorite football commentator (or play-by-play guy!) of all time. And finally, rebound from your first loss of figs with the tip of the day.
The Atlantic Voice's home nations both won (whoops, wrote this in the 82nd minute!), got a win and a draw. So let's temper our joy/lighten our mood (hey-we-didn't-lose), and begin our series of "Best Documentaries you can find on Youtube" with a classic from the '80s - "City" - a look inside some turbulent times at Manchester City.

After a hiatus, Eric and Zeff are back with a show where all the stories are in couplets including a fishmonger civil war in South London. PFH - that's "Podding From Home" continues as Eric and Zeff take a look at some stories that are only tangentially linked to all thing Covid. Zeff is not sure about the UFO tapes, while Eric is concerned about the chicken wing surplus and Steak-Umms tweeting.
Dogs can be trained to sniff Covid, and if not they can chase all the rats that are out and about. Not enough for you? Well, double-check the water.....
Eric and Zeff are podding from separate places as they demonstrate their commitment to social distancing. They lament the lack of live sport to pass the time, while discussing the pros and cons of virtual competition. They also discuss the history of teddy bears in windows, and wonder why Disney+ is giving the Muppets the cold shoulder. And who do you want to "bomb" your next Zoom meeting?
It's the end of the world. Well, not quite yet.

Every summer, Eric and Zeff predict which summer films will be hits and receive critical claim. And every November, it's time to tot up the scores and pick a winner. Eric was undefeated until last year; was Zeff's victory a fluke or a trend?
There's also talk of Disney + and their show "The Mandolorian" but at the end of the day, it's all about the "winning".....
The pod is off to the World Series. Well, just Eric, excited by the success of his beloved Washington Nationals. So the guys discuss the concept of bandwagon-jumping, the heat in Qatar, and soccer's back-pass rule (they swear, it will all link together).
There's also discussion of a celebrity (well, wives of celebrity) social media feud, while Zeff considers getting The Atlantic Voice into an podcast feud of its own.....

Can something be famous for being infamous? And is being infamous really as bad as it's cracked up to be?
One thing that is definitely not bad, is our annual Summer Movie Preview. Whether it's famous is another discussion, but what should be infamous is Zeff's performance in the annual competition between Eric and he as they preview the summer movies by watching trailers and making their predictions as to which films will be critically acclaimed and financially successful.
In Part 1, the guys look at June releases, from Godzilla (infamous), the Elton John biopic (famous) and the zombie comedy "The Dead Don't Die." (take your pick there).

What's that, you say? A 90s Christmas? Yep, Eric and Zeff are giving each other "gifts" from that decade, including the book "Generation X," electronic devices, and the movie "Singles."
Plenty of nostalgia, (and probably a fair share of "mis-remembering" too), it's Part One of our Christmas gift to you!
Despite colds and allergies, the guys are in front of their microphones with a most random selection of topics (though Zeff does convincingly link two of them together).
Eric is in New York hanging out at a trampoline park, Zeff goes to Fenway Park, and there's discussion of Titanic (the movie) on the twentieth anniversary of its release.

Time for the Summer Movie Scorecard!
Remember May and June? When Eric and Zeff previewed this year's summer movies? When they predicted how the likes of Wonder Woman, The Mummy, and Dunkirk would fare with the critics and at the box office. Well, summer is over and the moment of reckoning has arrived. It's time to total up and see if Zeff can win for the annual competition for the first time ever or will Eric move the goalposts as he often does....
There's also talk of Rotten Tomatoes, movie critics, and the lads fire a warning shot at The Ringer......
In the spirit of the "source" material, it's an opus folks, as Eric and Zeff discuss Blade Runner, movies old and new. There's also discussion of Elon Musk's Hyperloop, and Amazon getting a key to your house.

Part 2 of the Fried Chicken special, as Eric and Zeff continue their tour of local fried chicken joints. On this show, a visit to the Colonel, a side of donuts, and a beer at South Korea's finest. They also drive through a McDonalds (not literally), battle the coma-inducing effects of eating at six fast food restaurants in a row, and decide which is most worthy of the Atlantic Voice's recommendation.

Welcome to the Atlantic Voice's FA Cup Final Special, as Chelsea (Eric is true Blue) take on Arsenal (Zeff a manic depressive Gooner) in England's showpiece soccer match at the end of the month.
The guys recount their own visit to Wembley Stadium, how the FA Cup is unique in modern team sports, and make their predictions for the final. They also ponder what's in their fish, ESPN lay-offs, and listen to a Sgt Pepper's/Star Wars tribute.
EPL you say? What is that? The English Premier League of course (don't get antsy listeners on the east side of the Atlantic - we record in the US so we'll follow US lingo!). We're also discussing Funny or Die and YouTube in general.
Eric sings and is smug about his favourite team, while Zeff continues to refuse to apologize....

Anyway, it's Part Two of our Spring Special as Eric and Zeff continue their look at their own personal "Album Firsts" - those records that hold a value of some significance in their musical tastes and education. Zeff shares the first album he owned in all physical formats (he'll explain) and Eric talks about his first "Boomerang" album (he'd better explain as it does sound like "Boomerang" is code for "stolen"....). The Beatles make the list while Eric recalls the "First rap album I thoroughly enjoyed."

It’s the Spring Special – at least that’s what Zeff calls the two-parter that Eric and he do around this time of year. And this Spring, the guys are playing some music doing something called “Firsts” or to be more precise “First Albums.” Or maybe that should be “Album Firsts.”
But these aren’t first albums from an artist’s perspective – they’re first albums from our hosts’ viewpoint, as Zeff chooses the first LP he received for Christmas and Eric the first record that classified him as a “cool kid” (he thought).

Instead they finally get around to talking about Rogue One, the latest Star Wars film. Zeff gets a start on his New Year Resolutions, there's talk of 3D and the TV show The Grand Tour, while Eric challenges his partner on the latter's assertion that he was right. Two years ago...

Anyway, while the guys don't do politics on the pod, they do do predictions. And as is their custom(s) (okay, that was a stretch), making predictions inherently leads to figuring out who was more, well, predictive.
With his partner away, Zeff is getting a jump on tallying up the scores from our "Trump Predictions" show of late last year, and without Eric there to influence the scoring, Zeff is hoping to build a lead. Talk about making a (baggage) claim.....
