Declassified College Podcast | College Advice That Isn't Boring: Recent Episodes

Declassified Media

Why is it that all the college advice for students comes from boring people who went to college 20 years ago?

This show is about sharing college advice for freshmen all the way through your senior year from real students and professionals in less than 15 minutes.

If you have an unanswered question about college or have college advice that you’d like to share, email justin@getchogrindup.com.

It's time to unlock the cheat codes to college.

Yo! What is up everyone, it has been a MINUTE since we released an episode! A couple of updates below:

  1. This is a different type of episode as this is a talk that Justin Nguyen (your host) and Armel Talla did at SXSW EDU earlier this year. It's all about the student perspective and how higher educational institutions can work on engaging their students using social media.

  2. We are looking for a new host of the podcast! No real requirements other than being a people person and you're currently in college! If you're interested, please email Justin at justin@declassifiedmedia.co (Don't worry, we handle all of the editing!)

  3. We are looking to expand Declassified Media's social media presence with the launch of 2 more pages. @declassifiedcompsci and @declassifiedfinance. If you're interested, please email Justin at justin@declassifiedmedia.co

There aren't any requirements to the pages other than being technical major (for @declassifiedcompsci) and a finance major (@declassifiedfinance) and being a people person who is open to being on camera! This would be a trial period and if you're a fit with the team a paid position to be a content creator! (Don't worry, we would handle all of the editing!)

This season has been one of my favorites as I've opened up more as well as it has been on a topic that has been at the top of my mind all year. As you are getting back onto campus, seeing people for the first time in a long time, and so many more experiences; college can be a place that could make or break your mental health.

This advice episode is geared around what advice that we'd wish we had earlier in our lives and you will hear from:

Keirsten Sires - Founder and CEO of LRT Sports

James Farese - Founder and CEO of ReachLink

Mark Metry's episode about research

We aren't licensed psychologists... but Nathaan is!

Nathaan has been one of my favorite guests because he understands the issues from a clinical perspective, but can explain it in a way you and I can understand. Nathaan has found a way to combine his passion for psychology and mental health with technology, an area which we believe will only continue to grow.

Resources that Nathaan listed:

American Psychological Association

Mental Health America

In 2017-2018 I didn't know it, but I had my first anxiety attacks. My heart would heart at random times in the day and I had a cardiologist look at my heart and nothing was wrong physically.

College was beating on me and I was about to graduate so I had to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. But that is when I had to learn different ways to calm myself down when I got anxious.

In this episode you will hear from a couple of other students who have dealt with anxiety in college as well to show that this can happen to anyone. Guy, girl, business major, creative major, etc.

Jasmine Patrick - Southern Methodist University, Youtuber about the college lifestyle

Kristen Casey - New grad from UF, PR and Communications Associate at OneEleven

In the Fall I was the judge of a podcast competition a UCF. When I heard this podcast topic around the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon, I knew that I had to have them share their knowledge on the show.

The democratization of investing = lowering the barrier of entry to investing.

Before companies like Public.com were a thing, you would need about $10,000 to start investing and you would pay $7 to make a trade. With 69% of the US adult population having less than $1,000 in their savings account, for college students investing was pretty much impossible.

Introducing Public.com the best app to get started with investing. They have all of the features that the other guys have in the investing space, but the biggest difference is there is a social side. Prepare yourself for to study... a lot of studying to say the least.

The GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and MCAT are huge factors in the admissions process and if you want to get into a good school, you better get a high score.

High scores = getting into a top school = typically a higher salary than if you graduate from an "average" school.

That's just the facts.

I brought Mike Bergin and Amy Seely (the co-hosts of the Tests and the Rest podcast) on to share their insights into how to best prepare for these exams!

Just like how undergrad has SATs and ACTs, for graduate school you have MCATs, LSATs, GMATs, and GREs.

Start of season 6, we're going to be talking all about MBAs and Masters degrees!

Reading isn't something that we are brought up to love. In high school we're forced to read books that we hate and it sort of ruins reading I think. But when you actually find a book that you like, it can be tough to put down, or in my case stop listening to as I listen to audiobooks.

These 3 books will help you build a solid foundation for a lot of skills that you will need to know and understand in the future:

The Third Door by Alex Banayan - This will help you with networking and really change your mindset around "I'm just a student, who would want to meet with me".

The $100 Startup by Chris Guillebeau - For anyone googling "How To Make Money In College" or "I'm broke How Do I Make Money" this is a perfect book for you

Money Master The Game by Tony Robbins - Learn about personal finance from Financial Titans, but in a way that the "average" person can understand. There is less financial jargon in this book and it can definitely help you in the long run.

Bonus*

The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris - With everything moving remote, you can use Tim's tips to begin to shape the life of your dreams.
