In this episode of Confident Business English, I’m joined by Joely Pullen, who owns Savvy English. A company with 2000+ students across 25 companies, for the first part of a real, unscripted conversation about confidence at work. We talk about a challenge we both see all the time: professionals who already have a good level of English but don’t feel confident using it when it really matters. If you’ve ever thought “I know what I want to say, but I just don’t say it,” this episode will resonate. We explore the difference between confidence and competence, why this is often harder to fix than language itself, and what’s really going on beneath the surface. Enjoy! Anna

I noticed coaching clients that many didn't feel comfortable using this word. Therefore, in this episode I wanted to train on just this one word as in my opinion, it's one you can use a lot and worth learning. This is an interactive episode where you can practice with me.

New season starts tomorrow 25th September. Just before we dive into that, let's me catch you up on what is coming in the new season of CBE.

Every summer I take a break from the normal podcast schedule and send out a survey to listeners. All this feedback helps me make decisions about where to take the podcast going forward. Thank you so much if you took the time to leave your comments!

As a learning takeaway, here's a run-down of advanced vocabulary you will hear:

  • To bring someone up to speed - to update people
  • The golden thread - a common theme
  • To make a comeback - to make a return
  • To tap into something - to take advantage of resources (in a positive way) in this case training
  • To pour over something- Not a common phrasal verb. to spend a lot of time looking at something like a book or document because you enjoy it.
  • "It's like Marmite, you either love it or you hate it" - Very colloquial. This is a very British saying referring to the in my opinion, disgusting vegetarian spread called Marmite! We use this phrase to refer to any topic that is polarizing.
  • To churn out the newsletter - Very colloquial. To keep producing something such as the newsletter

Imagine your boss or colleague gives you feedback on a piece of work. It's good news, they are really happy with the work you have done, they are telling you that everything is great. And when they finish speaking, you don't really know what else to say other than "Thank you." You don't feel this accurate reflects enough of what you want to say and would like to know other phrases you can use. This topic was suggested by listener Jess, based in Shangai. One of the biggest fears people have aside from spiders, snakes and flying is speaking in public.

As a manager or leading giving presentations is part and parcel of what you have to do, so the question seems to be, how can we make this process better so you can feel more confident?

Here to talk to you today is Christopher Wright. I first met Christopher in 2023 and I really wanted to bring him on because I think he has a really valuable perspective to share with you.

Since 2012 Chris has been running a training business in Spain that has helped many top companies and professionals. He is also an associate teacher in Business and Communication Skills at Comillas University. He is an ex-president and member of Toastmasters (Public speaking organization) and has given and evaluated over 80 speeches.

In the episode Chris talks about:

  • What your first steps could be if you find public speaking in English difficult
  • How you can create your own coach through your " English voice"
  • Perfection vs communication
  • Why being concise, simple and clear is so important
  • How to use your voice to be more engaging

And much more..

If you've listened to previous episodes you may have heard me mention that there are really 4 core tenses that the majority of people need in a business context; the present, the future, the past and the present perfect. If you have a good command of these ones, that will serve you well in many business interactions.

I've found personally that many people are more comfortable with the future and present tenses but generally weaker with the past and present perfect. I'd like to start to work on this with you in today's episode. We are going to start with regular verbs in the past tense. In the future I will pick up other areas such as irregular verbs.

Join me this week as I share with you about a terrible morning I had recently and my reflections about dealing with things that we can't control and managing nerves when speaking another language. This was a spur of the moment episode. I really wanted to record something and therefore it may be a little faster than usual in some parts and more colloquial. It's brilliant conversational listening practice too because I'm speaking very naturally.

Enjoy

In this episode I tell you about an experience I had giving a business presentation and Q&A in Spanish and what I learnt from that. It was quite an eye-opening experience and I wanted to share it with you because it might be useful in your communications too. I also realised that some areas are much more important than others and I tell you what those are. The episode is a bit longer this week as I wanted to have enough time to cover all the points and was enjoying doing the analysis.

I hope you can take something away from it

Do you panic or avoid saying numbers at work? It's so common to feel like this. And normal. I'm the same in Spanish. We spend a lot of time thinking about the words and the sentence structures that we forget about these important things that come up all the time in work conversations. You can listen to the numbers and repeat to practice out loud or do a dication exercise with this episode.

In this episode I go through other more advanced terms (mainly verbs) to talk about strategy, as well as the usual tips and common mistakes to avoid. Do you make mistakes? Almost certainly, yes. Do they all matter? Not as much as you think. Should I try to correct them? Well, of course but you need to think about a good starting point. I always recommend starting by "cleaning up" some basic and repeated mistakes that can affect how you speak overall - the quick wins essentially. In this episode  tell you about some very common ones that I hear day in and day out.

"Thank you so much and if you have an questions let me know." You say it but secretly you're hoping that no one asks you anything but then you see the hand emoji pop up on the screen or someone says "Excuse me, Anna but.....". Today I share with you 4 steps to feel more confident in this situation and answer more coherently. I practice this type of exercise a lot of with my clients and I think it could benefit you too.

I want to continue our work with fundamentals by looking at a common problem that Spanish speakers have, how can I be concise in English? I often hear people struggle to get to the point of what they want to say. Spanish is spoken differently than English, in English tell me what you want to say, as clearly as possible in as few words as possible. Here I share an extremely simple and memorable technique to help you prepare what you want to say so that is concise and clear.

Enjoy! I hope it's useful.

Let's  continue our work with fundamental business vocabulary - your work routine! How exciting! Now before you try and escape, I promise you that this is worth your time due to the sheer number of mistakes I hear almost every day regarding this topic. A nice phrase springs to mind here - You are only as strong as your weakest link!  The simplest things are sometimes the hardest to get right. Well worth 20 minutes of your time to say these things correctly.

Hello! Long time no see! How are you? Welcome to a brand new season of Anna with 2Ns podcast.

Whether you are a new or regular listener I'm really looking forward to getting back into our weekly routine. And, we've got work to do.

How it works - Each episode will address a different topic related to business English and I will give you my expert tips, guidance and advice as well as practical things you can actually use when you are in your job.

We are going to kick off this new season working on areas which are fundamental in business interactions. The first one will be, how do you greet someone for the first time? How can you do it in a way that is professional?

It may seem easy but often the simplest things can be the hardest. I often hear people struggling with this. Get my thoughts on the best thing to say, an example of how I would greet someone and mistakes to be careful of.

And if that wasn't enough, just before the end I give you a word, structure or phrase that hardly anybody uses but everybody should.

I hope it's useful and enjoy!

Self-study is mainly centered around listening and reading because you don't need anybody else. There is a lot you can do and that is within your control to improve and practice when you have more downtime like over Summer. I have some very clear recommendations about what you should and shouldn't focus on if you keep contact with the language and learn things that will help you in your career.

In the podcast I mention a quote which is actually Discipline equals freedom - Jocko Willink

Also the Business Resources I mention are called - Business English Pod. To access their detailed transcripts you need to have a paid membership (I have one actually). They are the best resources I have found if you want something very in-depth and detailed. It's not for everyone but can be a ncie compliment.

This is a great one if you have to predict or talk about what might happen in the business in the future. A common go-to for Spanish speakers is to overuse a certain word/phrase. I've noticed recently that connectors are a really important part of expressing yourself in English at work. I wanted to share some thoughts on this and tell you about some of the things Spanish speakers get wrong with connectors.

This episode was suggested by Victor who is a listener and has been a supporter of the podcast for while - thank you for the idea. I chose this one because I thought it would be very useful to you as meetings as something that all of us have to face at work, therefore it's good use of your time to learn the correct ways to talk about them. I really hope you like the episode at the end I've got a word, phrase or structure that hardly anybody uses but everyone should.

Enjoy!

There are different roles in a meeting but leading a meeting is perhaps the most important. You've got to welcome and introduce people, kick off, keep the flow of the meeting going and make sure that people contribute and stick to the agenda. This is nothing new in your own language but in English I know it might feel overwhelming at times when you have 5 people staring at you waiting for the meeting to start. Let me help you with some core vocabulary for each phase of standard business meeting.

Ask is a verb that has a big return on investmentif you can learn to use it properly. It's a core verb and the structures that I talk about in this episode are essential ones that you will have to use at some point. It's worthwhile putting in time to hear what they are and also some common things people do wrong that you can get right. I've been working on these recently with my clients and there have been several "aha" moments where they realised they had been using the wrong structure. I really recommend spending a little time listening to this one.

The idea of this is not to pressure you into speaking very quickly or make you feel inadequate if you can't say these things in 20 seconds...it is just to give you some practical ideas that you can use yourself.

As always I share you little tips and guidance about common mistakes and some vocab that no other students use that will make you stand out!

I know core tenses isn't as sexy as business expressions but it is arguably much more important. Making mistakes with core tenses (present, past, future, present perfect) is a more serious mistake than for example missing an S on your plural or using an ininstead of an on preposition. I spend a lot of my time working with my students on these core tenses so that there are perfect. If you have a great command of these core tenses you can be confident working in a business  environment in English.

Remember that the first step is to be aware that you're making a mistake and then you can correct it. A coach should identify your mistakes and help you along the way to improving them.

Would you start a project to improve something without a plan or strategy? Didn't think so. English should be the same. I recommend you to take a step back and think about what you really want to achieve this year. Be realistic and honest with yourself and you will come up with a goal that is achieveable that you can really work towards.

*Technically, this question is one for the Coach but I explain what I mean in the episode.

Recently a lot of you have asked me about how I've learnt Spanish. After living in Spain for nearly 4 years now I think it's actually a good point to look back and share what things I've done to get where I am now.

When I came to Spain at 26 I basically spoke NO Spanish. I'd been taught Spanish at secondary school but had forgotten absolutely everything. After doing a very basic beginners course arrived in Madrid and I didn't understand ANYTHING.

I'm going to tell you how I've managed to get to where I'm at now, some little strategies that worked well for me but also the REAL picture of what it's been like - warts and all!

I hope you can take something away from it or just have a giggle relating to the struggles of learning a language! Even though you might be learning a different language than me, the struggles are the same - getting the grammar right, understanding people, having the confidence to speak etc.

Being able to make your English less direct when required is an important part of speaking English internationally. Different cultures have different ways of doing things but you need to be able to adjust when needed. Being too direct could put people off, make it more difficult to build relationshops and just sound a little rude, even though I'm sure that would never be your intention.

The 1st in a mini series of this topic I give you some quick tips adout how you can soften your English if you need to. In this episode we will look at:

  • Using Could to form polite suggestions
  • Using Wouldn't in negative sentences
  • Using Might/May for desires

I hope it's useful!

Let's continue our look at business phrasal verbs that student hardly ever use that are great to know and understand or even try it out in the next business meeting! Recently, I've been obsessed with phrasal verbs with "through". Through in a phrasal verb has a few meanings such as communication such as put through, get through (telephones) but in today's episode I want to look at two meanings which are experiencing difficult situations and completing or finishing something.

I'm going to take you through (see! there loads with through!)

  1. To go through
  2. To push through
  3. To rattle through
  4. To run through
  5. To see something through
  6. To sit through
  7. To waltz through

Acronyms are a business person's best friend. They save us time so that we don't have to say all the tricky words, which can be handy from an English learner point of view.

We use them in writing and also in speaking however there are two important things to take into account. 1) Is the acronym spoken? Not always. 2) How do we say the acronym? Sometimes we say it together and sometimes we say the letters individually. There are also rather frequent mistakes to avoid that are common for Spanish speakers.

I go through a selection of the most common business acronyms and answer those two questions for you. Here are the main ones we are going to talk about so that you can follow:

ASAP, KPI, FYI, COB/COP, EOD, ETA, WFH, SEO, CEO, CFO, COO, CMO, CTO, ROI, NGO, SWOT.

I hope it's useful!

Today I share with you an exercise that I really like to do with my students as it's one of the most common things that you might be asked to do if you work on a project with English speakers or where English is the common language.

I've also touched on some really nice vocab that you can use to avoid using the same-old stuff like "at the moment", "so far", "in the future. A little bit of variation is good!

I suggest you get a pen a little notepad or take some notes on your device of the vocab that could be useful for you.

We talked about the 3rd conditional when expressing mistakes and regrets in business, now let's move on and tackle the 2nd conditional in a work context.

I'm sure you will be used to the "If I won the lottery, I would buy a mansion" example but there are much more uses of the 2nd conditional other than talking about these types of very unrealistic situations.

In the episode I'll talk about how we use the 2nd conditional for:

  • Business problems
  • Thinking about potential trends and impacts
  • Negotiating

In 15 minutes I can only touch on each of those areas. To use conditionals well takes a lot of repetition and a bit of practice. The best part is there are rules to follow.

Enjoy!

On my Instagram you voted for the next episode to be about phrasal verbs

In this episode I have chosen 4 business phrasal verbs that use the preposition "down". The preposition down can mean a few things but one the main categories is to reduce.

Remember we can sometimes find logic in the phrasal verb by looking at the preposition. So, here are the 4 we are going to look at:

  • To tone down - reducir el tono
  • To whittle down  - reducir
  • To play down - restar importancia a
  • To put something down to  - atribuir

I hope that you find this useful. Rememeber that it's just as important to understand these as well as to use them so that the next time you are in a meeting or on a phonecall you can figure out what someone is trying to say.

Enjoy!

Bored of saying "I'm busy" when someone asks you how work is going? This episode is for you.

I always warm up at the beginning of any sessions by asking the question "What have you got going on this week?" or "Tell me what your week is like."

I like to do this because immediately it's get the person focused on telling me about a very common thing we talk about at work which is our schedule and workload.

The majority of them will answer something like "really busy", "very busy", or "busy as usual" and it got me thinking, why not different options to spice it up a bit? To spice something up is to make it a bit more interesting.

In this episode I tell you about some natural responses and answers to having:

  • A lot of work
  • Not a lot of work
  • An easy task
  • A difficult task

Enjoy!

Last year a colleague gave me a book called The Mental Game of Poker by Jared Tender (Thank you, Juan!). I thought, but I don't need to know anything about poker...?

Anyway, I gave it a read and found it really eye-opening in terms of the way to look at improving a skill, such as speaking another language.

I'm going to share with you the part that really resonated with me and helped me understand why I ask myself "Why do I feel like I'm not making any progress? I've been speaking Spanish for  4 years and I some days I feel like I've never spoken a word before"

The ideas in this book gave me some perspective on that. I've shared it with my students and now I want to share it with you too.

Enjoy!

What is a dump? Funny word actually. It can mean where you put rubbish i.e a rubbish dump. It's also a synonym for poo (Nice, I know!) If you've spent any time on Instagram recently you likely have also seen the expression "photo dump".

A 'photo dump' is a post which features multiple pictures. Over the past year, you've probably noticed more and more of them on your feed. You might even have posted a few yourself.

I'm going to take that concept and apply it to business idioms. Here are the first round of 10 exceptionally useful English business idiooms.

In part 1 we are going to look at 7 business idiomas for Communication.

  • To touch base
  • To be in the loop
  • To be out of the loop
  • To loop me in
  • Give me a shout
  • Give me a heads-up

Why are they useful?

"I'm in a meeting but I don't understand anything anyone says."

"They said something like "cuiberferifjfueeib" and I had no clue!"

As I've always said, idiomas and expressions are for generally more for understanding rather than using. Learn these ones and you know what people mean when they are talking to you and as a more advanced step, include them in your vocabulary.

Soo many of my students tell me they are SO SCARED to ask questions in meetings. They sit there wanting to ask a question in English but instead of doing it they stay silent and send email afterwards!

Let's try and break that cycle today and look at how to ask indirect questions in a meeting. Why indirect questions? Well, because we use these a lot in formal meetings when we want more information but want to ask in a polite and professional.

However, there are are some REALLY IMPORTANT rules to follow because they do not have the same structure as direct questions.

We are going to talk about these 5 indirect questions:

  1. Do you have any idea…
  2. Do you know…
  3. I was wondering…
  4. I’d like to know…
  5. Could you tell me…

The 3rd conditional. The worst of them all! The one everybody loves to hate. Well, that's try and change that. See the conditionals as a way to express yourself at a higher level. If you stop and notice, we use the conditionals a lot, including at work.

When we are talking about what we would have done differently, what we could have done if we had more time or more budget and how we are going to use this learning in future work and projects.

In this episode I introduce the conditional and go through an example. Here is the text and the sentences I use in the podcast. This is a more difficult one so you might need help to follow it.

Text

Sony launched its cassette recording device known as Betamax in the mid 1970s. It lost the battle for market share to JVC’s VHS technology because other products were cheaper, but Sony didn’t stop making Betamax tapes until 2016, long after it was relevant to most of us, who didn’t even realize it was still in production.

Sentences

If we'd had time, we would have been able to do it.

si hubiéramos tenido tiempo habríamos sido capaces de hacerlo

If Sony had stopped making tapes sooner, they would've saved money

If Sony had had better marketing, they would've sold more

If Sony hadn’t lost market share, they would've been more successful

If Sony’s products had been cheaper, they would've sold more

We are back with the phrasal verbs! If you haven't already listen to #60 Breaking Down Phrasal Verbs before you listen to this.

So, here are our 3 phrasal verbs:

  • R*ll out
  • F***h out
  • P*n out -

Find out what they mean and hear me put them in context with business examples!

Re: the guideline with phrasal verbs and Out. You can logically group some phrasal verbs by their preposition. The preposition Out can be used to mean extending and spreading in some way. These phrasal verbs could all fit in this category, some closer than others. As I said in the episode don't get too hung up on this (obsesionado con algo).

**Sorry for the actual pans in the background of this one around 10 minutes onwards!  It wasn't planned at all hahaha

This format was really popular last time so here I am with another one. The reason I chose Teams & People is because I noticed that my students didn't use a lot of natural vocabulary when describing these things. In the episode I talk about all of things.

  • To pull your weight
  • To gel/click
  • To be on the same
  • To be a teamplayer
  • There's no "I" in team
  • To step on somebody

Apologies for the terrible analogies! The human pyramid is my latest attempt.

The inspiration came from a comment about a student's challenges and fears when giving presentations in English. Doing things in front of peers and colleagues is sometimes difficult let alone when it is in another language.

In this episode I give you my top tip about how to combat your nerves and

I also touch on the difference between the adjective nervous in English and in Spanish because it actually doesn't mean the same thing.

Oh and by the way... - Stay tuned to the end of the episode to hear some exciting news for an event at the end of March which I will be doing exclusively for newsletter subscribers.

Wow, it has been one year since I started this podcast. As they say, time flies when you are having fun. To mark this milestone I'm bringing you a special episode with a very special guest.

I asked you last year what things you wanted me to talk about. Time and time again people would ask me about Interviews in English. "What should I say" "What should I do?" "How can I stop being so nervous?"

Join me and Nigel, an international interview expert, as he gives some great fantastic tips but also a fresh perspective on the interview experience for non-native speakers of English.

Nigel was a wonderful guest and I hope you take away something useful that you can use in interviews in the future.

By the way - the episode was recorded in November 2020 which is why we make reference to "this year" meaning 2020. Just in case it confused you!

Break down is a beautiful and fascinating phrasal verb that has multiple meanings and I wanted  to share it with you. I've been looking at this phrasal verb recently in my classes and it gave me the inspiration.

Some of the meanings are very common and useful at work too. I like to teach you things that are unusual and interesting but also those where you are going to have a high ROI. Meaning if you learn them it will be worth your time and effort because we use them a lot every day.

I break down (excuse the pun!) the phrasal verb into meanings and give clear examples that you can go off and use in your conversations at home and at work.

I hope you enjoy this episode. Grab a pen or paper to write down the different meanings. I use the Spanish translations but you can write down the translation into your own language.

This one tense that a lot of Spanish speakers don't use or make a lot of mistakes with. Recently, I've been correcting this a lot so I thought it was worth dedicating a bit of time to it.

It makes sense because in Spanish you would say "Llevo tres años viviendo aquí" and in English we say "I've been living in Madrid for 3 years" (Cue brain explode emoji)

in this episode I cover the main mistakes to avoid and ways that you can tell if you need to use this tense or not.

I also cover how we can measure time with this tense using For and Since which is another sticking point for students. In short, this is an area where people make A LOT of mistakes so it's worth your time to check it out.

I mark thousands of English words every week and am very used to the common mistakes that students make and the verb Confirm is one of them!

It is a verb we use a lot when we are writing emails and we want to secure actions, tasks and information. Like you, many of students write emails in English so this is definitely one episode to listen to.

It's a common mistake but a small one that can be easily corrected if you what are the key things to avoid, which I break down for you in this episode.

I also tell you about the common structures with Confirm and how I use it writing emails. I hope you enjoy!

There are some English phrasal verbs that are just more important than others. Come up with is one of them.

We use it prolifically when we speak. It is fairly easy to grasp the meaining of it but there are some a couple of very common problems to avoid which I cover in this episode.

I also put the phrasal verb in context for you with common collocations and explain the logic behind the use of the preposition UP in phrasal verbs and how you can use that to decode some phrasal verbs.

"What is the most common way to say it?", "Do you really use this word?", What would you really say?" - These are vocabulary questions  I get asked about a lot by students, so I thought I would do an episode in this format.

I'm taking a really simple vocabulary topic, in this case personalities, and telling you what I would REALLY say rather than what you might see or read in the textbooks.

I'm not trying to teach you obscure vocabulary that no one uses but instead words that people really say that if you want to, you can use them and that you feel confident you understand the meaning when you hear them.

Please take into account that I am British, from England and more specifically a town in the South of England. I've also lived in the North of England and now in Spain. These are all well known words but my choice of words may be different than other English speakers.

We start again at the New Year which inevitably means that we reflect and we think about things we want to start, things we want to give, new habits we need to adopt.

I was also reflecting about what podcast episode to start the New Year with and  this English expression came into my head; To Start Afresh

Have you ever wanted to start something from the beginning again? Give it another shot? Well, in these cases perhaps you want to start afresh

Another reason I really want to teach this one because I don't think I've ever heard a student say it. Therefore, it's a great one to add to your English vocabularly and impress your colleagues!

In this episode, I put this English expression in context with common sentence examples and also touch on some other closely related phrases such as To go back to square one. Enjoy!

This little modal verb phrase has been popping up a lot in my classes and teaching so I want to teach it to you. This is a common confusion with the verb Suppose (which is different) and it is VERY common mistake. Students say "It's supposed that" instead of "to be supposed to" in the correct form.

I go through and give you 3 clear examples of how we use this structure in the real life to talk about expectation and requirement in the present and past tense.

I really encourage you to think about your own sentences with "To be supposed to" after listening to this episode and to start using them when you speak English.

I hope you find this useful. If you have any feedback or thoughts feel free to get in touch with me.

I recieve a lot of messages asking me about how you can feel more confident speaking a language. You may know or not but for the past 3 years I've been learning Spanish. Before I came to Spain I took a beginner's crash course and the rest is history. I've had to battle with feeling confident speaking Spanish and there have been times that I clam up and find it really difficult to speak in front of other people. So, today I want to share some reflections with you about these I've noticed and learnt about my journey so far.

I hope it helps to put things in perspective and also to know that we are all in the same boat!

A lot of students get confused between the Verbs Hope and Wish. Today I'm going to tackle a few ways you can use the verb Hope in English in the Future, Present and Past.

Students can use Hope a lot when talking about the future and present but less so in the past. It's actually a really common verb and use a lot in business English when writing emails, so it is a good thing to have a command of.

I also show you a way you might hear Hope used to give insults!

The sentence structures cover these things in Spanish Espero que + subjunctive in past, Espera que hayas + past participle, Esperaba que + subjunctive in past.

I hope you enjoy this episode (see! we use it all the time)

Following on from my episode last week breaking down phrasal verbs in English, this week I start with a selection of 4 Advanced English phrasal verbs with the preposition Across.

As I said in the last episode, it is important to put phrasal verbs in groups that make sense to help you remember them well.

ACROSS fits in two key categories of meaning which are Finding and Communication. I cover 4 phrasal verbs including; come across (econtrarse), to stumble across (encontrarse), to come across (dar la impresión) & to get across (hacer entender).

Firstly I put each phrasal verb in context with sentences then I give you common collocations and how to use the phrasal verb technically i.e is it inseparable/separable and transitive/intransitive.

I hope you enjoy this episode and that it sheds some light and clarity on these phrasal verbs which are often difficult for students to understand.

You have been requesting phrasal and so this is the first one I am going to do focused on some advanced but very useful phrasal verbs. Before we jump into lots of definitions I want to take a step back and look at some of the logic. Yes, phrasal verbs CAN make sense if you look at them in a certain way and focus on certain things. I will tell you about a very helpful way to learn them and a preview of next week's episode.

Think of this as a phrasal verb foundation which we will draw on in future episodes!

The anglicisms I talk about I hear a lot in conversation with Spanish people. They are sometimes surprised when I say that native speakers don't actually use those words or terms in the way.

I give an overview of each of the anglicisms and what native speakers will really say so that you can be more confident and assured of how to use English in these contexts.

I also touch on an interesting expression about drawing an obvious conclusion from what known or evident! Don't miss out.
