STORY Connections: Recent Episodes

STORY Connections is a story podcast from the New Hampshire Humanities Council literacy program, Connections. Connections is a reading program offered in collaboration with English Language Learner and Adult Basic Education classes. You'll hear traditional tales remembered by storytellers from their childhood. Dal Rai created the STORY Connections image of a Bhutanese grandmother in traditional dress and gold jewelry telling stories to her grandchildren.
Here are two stories. The first is "Marriage of a Little Mouse" told by Bir Jogi. He told it first in English and then in Nepali. Second is "The Tortoise" told in Nepali by Jay Jogi and in English by Bir Yogi. We recorded these stories in a neighborhood on a hill in Laconia, NH that the Bhutanese people call Dadagang, village of hills.
Bishnu Mishra told this tale in Laconia, NH in his ESOL class. He said he heard it as a boy when he worked in the cardomom fields. He tells it in Nepali; the English interpretation is by Nilhari Bhandari.
Saraswati told "Cow and Lion" in Nepali and her teacher Kerstin Ahlgren read it in English. Here is the English version. Saraswati said she heard the tale while she worked in the fields. They told it in Laconia, NH on Nov.11, 2010 in a Lutheran Social Services ESOL class where folklorist Jo Radner facilitated a folktale workshop.
Bhim Dhakal told this story on a snowy January day , 2011, in Concord, NH at Concord Community College where he is a student. The Vulture is one of the stories collected in the New Hampshire Humanities Council's Bhutanese Folktale Project.
Hari Tiwari told this story in Nepali and Nilhari Bhandari interpreted to English in the New Hampshire Humanities Council's Bhutanese Folktale Project. Hari told it in Laconia, NH on Nov. 9, 2010 in a Lutheran Social Services ESOL class where folklorist Jo Radner facilitated a folktale workshop.
Keshar said that her mom told this story to her while they chopped vegetables to prepare the evening meal. She has told the story many times in Nepali to her friends in Nepal. She has been in the U.S. five months and here tells the story for the first time in English. Keshar told the story at NHTI, Concord Community College.
