What happens when you've asked clearly, explained why it matters and the work is still late, incomplete or not good enough? You feel the frustration rise and you get frustrated that you're angry. In this episode of Leadership Live, I speak with Karen Thrall, author of Don't Lose Your Shit at Work, about what anger at work is really trying to tell us before it turns into an explosion, withdrawal or the conversation we keep avoiding.
This conversation looks at anger as data: a signal that a boundary may have been crossed, a standard has slipped, a role isn't being fully owned or something important needs to change.
We talk about the hidden cost of reactive leadership, the power of composure and why the most effective leaders aren't the loudest in the room — they're the ones who can create clarity in chaos.
If you're leading people, navigating pressure or finding yourself emotionally stretched in your work, this episode will give you practical insight, honest reflection and a different way to think about leadership under pressure.
If this episode made you think about a conversation, reaction or leadership pattern that keeps repeating, pause before rushing to fix it. Ask what it is trying to show you. And if you want support thinking through the deeper leadership pattern underneath it, reach out to Daphna.

This isn't an episode about endurance or bucket lists. It's about who you become under pressure.
When your body is exhausted, your mind starts bargaining, and the usual ways you lead, cope or push through stop working.
In this episode, I share what climbing Kilimanjaro revealed about pressure, identity, the voices that show up when things get hard and the moment I didn't think I could take another step.
This is a reflection on fear, asking for help, the unseen cost of coming back down and why the real transformation often only becomes clear after the climb is over.
If you're leading, navigating change or in a season that's quietly demanding more of you than before, this episode will meet you where you are.
Just like the climb, clarity doesn't always arrive at the summit — it often comes when you stop and really look at where you are. The Life Clarity Quiz helps you reflect on what's aligned, what feels heavy and what support could change the way you move forward.

What if one of the greatest challenges in leadership isn't decision-making or managing stress but loneliness?
In this Unfiltered Series conversation, leadership experts Amy Riley and Daphna Horowitz get real about the isolation that often hides behind confidence and success. Even the most connected leaders can feel unseen when everyone's looking to them for answers.
Amy and Daphna explore how this quiet loneliness shows up at every level of leadership and why it's not a flaw but a signal—a call to pause, reflect, and reconnect. They share how to build your personal "A-Team," drop the mask selectively, and find spaces where you can be supported as much as you support others. True leadership, they remind us, isn't about standing alone at the top—it's about finding the courage to lead with openness and connection.
To deepen this reflection, the Life Clarity Quiz helps you quickly assess where you feel aligned, where you're stretched thin and where you may need your own "A-Team" around you. https://daphnahorowitz.com/life-clarity

UNFILTERED: Courageous Conversations about Anger and What your fire is trying to tell you
In this episode of UNFILTERED: Courageous Conversations about Anger and What your fire is trying to tell you, Daphna and her co-host explore the misunderstood emotion of anger, an experience many of us are taught to hide or downplay. Together, they unpack why anger is often labeled as "unprofessional" or "unproductive" and instead reframe it as a natural, informative and deeply human emotion.
They discuss how anger can signal our values, highlight boundaries and even serve as a catalyst for meaningful change when expressed with clarity and intention. From leadership to personal relationships, the conversation encourages listeners to acknowledge their emotions rather than suppress them and to use anger as a tool for understanding and conscious action.

Transitioning from being an expert to being a leader can be a challenging process for actuaries. Actuaries are known for their technical expertise and analytical skills, which they have honed through years of studying and passing exams. However, when they are promoted to leadership positions, they often struggle to step back from the technical work and trust others to handle it.
In this episode, we dive into a conversation with Julia Lessing, a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, Australia, and principal actuarial director of Guardian Actuarial, about building management and leadership skills that go beyond simply reading books or studying theory. Some of the insights shared are the need for actuaries to let go of control and trust their team members, as well as the importance of active listening and empathy in building strong relationships, the value of learning from mistakes, and the need for patience and flexibility in career progression. We show that leadership can be broken down into a set of micro-skills that can be learned, even when these skills don’t come about naturally.
About the guest:
Julia Lessing is a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, Australia, with 20 years of experience as a consulting actuary. She is also a certified organizational coach and an experienced counselor. Julia established Guardian Actuarial in 2015, where she is the principal actuarial director. She is passionate about fostering forward-thinking leaders in the actuarial industry and runs the Guardian Actuarial Leadership program to help actuaries build their management toolkits and leadership skills. Julia is a mother of four adult children and is actively involved in her community as a qualified counselor for Lifeline and an authorized foster carer.

In this episode, we dive into a coaching conversation that takes us into visionary leadership and how to evolve as a leader. Robbie Swale is a leadership coach, author, and host of two podcasts: The Coach’s Journey and The 12-minute Method.
We started off with a coaching topic that many people can relate to as we close off a year and contemplate what we want for the new year. We take stock of everything we’ve done so far and want clarity to plan our way forward.
As high achievers, we’re constantly navigating the question of what’s next.
Why do we let challenges cloud our successes? Why do we overlook the tough work it takes (and lots of hard times) to reach a successful endpoint? And how can we overcome our feelings of failure and stuckness so we can move into action toward the next goal?
Let’s answer these questions in today’s episode of Leadership Live. In a fascinating conversation with Joel Green, CEO and Founder of Pro Level Training we hear about Joel’s retirement from professional basketball to focus on building a business that really makes a difference. He’s the National Director of Nike’s Sports Camps and the author of the book, Filtering, The Way to Extract Strength from Struggle. Listen to his story and how you can learn to filter.

Do you want to align your inner self with how you interface with the outside world? When you elevate your leadership game (the way you think, feel, and act), you elevate your sense of spirit, freedom, passion, and your quality of life. Would you consider using plant medicine (or psychedelics) to help you gain that alignment?
When you have everything and still feel that something intangible is missing from your life, here’s one way to explore the depths of your inner world to see what comes up and how it can change you.
In today’s conversation with Jonathan de Potter, we speak about elevating your leadership and discovering more joy by exploring deeper levels of consciousness. Because to lead your business, you need to be aligned - body and mind - inside and out.
In this episode, we dive deep into what psychedelics can do for you, how the journeys (ayahuasca and others) can help you shift deep patterns, and ask if there are other types of knowledge we can access beyond conventional knowledge. Would you dare to try?
Tune in, gain some information, do the research and make up your own mind.

We hear a lot about what motivates and inspires a team but do we really know what we’re doing that demotivates them? Today’s guest is Julie Bartkus, a leading authority on workplace transformation. She’s embarked on a 20 year long, hands-on research, interviewing employees at all levels in organizations, to identify over 30 staff demotivators that drain team members and reduce employee engagement. Julie shares her first experience of becoming a manager and how she dealt with her first challenge. Babalwa Fatyi is a sustainability expert, who is a founder and Managing Director at Myezo Environmental Management Services. Babalwa has a fascinating story from modest beginnings growing up in a rural village, she always felt at one with her surroundings and her passion for science and sustainability led her to found a business that focuses on this. She’s also an author and poet. She shares her story of growing up where women were at the center of leadership – leading the home, the community, and the farms and coming to work and all of a sudden having a different experience where women in organizations need to be empowered. This took her by surprise since we don’t need to empower women, we need to remind them of their power. Stay tuned for an inspiring episode and a surprise at the end of the episode where she shares one of her poems with us that’s all about women’s strength and power.

Our health is one of our most valued treasures. It can take just a few days to go from feeling totally normal to losing everything. This is what happened to Chris Maxwell. In a few days he went from fully functioning to being hooked up to a ventilator, fighting for his life. He was diagnosed with Guillain Barre syndrome. Nine months in the hospital, fighting for his physical and mental health, really put him to his test. At the age of 16, Genecia experienced horrible incidents of bullying at school. Soon after, she tried to commit suicide. Her mother’s words: “Turn your mess into a message” gave her a wake-up call and she carried those words throughout her life to make choices that empower rather than bring her down. She decided that business is a way to put yourself out into the world, and that leadership is about much more than a way to earn money. It’s a way to develop new skills and get started on a life’s journey. Genecia is a way to make change happen. Today she’s a millionaire, a purpose-driven woman and her principal of the 5 f words are something I really love. How can you find stillness in the chaos? Learning to thrive in chaos is Matthew Schwab’s game, having spent many years as a captain in the merchant marines. He learned through life experiences, many of them challenging, that you need to find stillness in order to find your inner strength.
We create our own stories and interpretations of external events and often get stuck in the same loops, creating the same reality over and over again. The way to change it is to be still, connect with yourself and begin to change your story.
Matthew shares some of the stories that helped him find his inner strength and re-create his reality. He walked away from a 20 year career and reinvented himself and his life. In this episode, he shares some tips on how to find stillness through breathing, meditation, morning routine and shifting mindset. How to work with your body to find the pause and make a powerful choice in the moment.

Today’s conversation with Maya Gershon takes you through her story of making the transition from being a successful engineer working in R&D to CEO of Vade, an innovative startup. In this episode, you’ll hear the many lessons she learned on her journey. She shares how she worked on herself to become a leader because it didn’t come naturally to her. Her employees knew her only as of the taskmaster and didn’t really know her as a person. So she shifted her perspective and started to share more about herself. How to micromanage respectfully but still give your employees more freedom? Can you develop the characteristics of the leader as you go? It’s ok not to know things, because when we ask questions and get answers, we learn, educate ourselves and grow as human beings. Oprah Winfrey began writing the "What I Know For Sure" column in O, The Oprah Magazine. Saying that the question offered her a way to take "stock of her life”. Let us now ask ourselves the question: what do I know for sure?
It allows you to take a deep look into yourself and your life, draw learning and gather insights so that you can keep growing in your potential. Have a listen to this episode so that you can get some ideas about how to ponder this question for yourself.

In a world where we're experiencing physical disconnection, how can we create meaningful connections? Through the covid pandemic, we've moved from face-to-face interactions, being physically present to the virtual world of meet and greet. It has become a way to be more efficient at times, enabling us to meet people we may not have met otherwise and at the same time, we ask ourselves. Can we deepen our relationships when we are unable to physically be together? This is the question Marc Marling posed for our coaching session today. Listen to this episode to see how Marc revisits his own assumptions and mindset to create a new story about what's possible in a virtual world.

Confucius says - Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. What obstacles, failures, mistakes have you faced in your life? And What have you learned from them? The key is to learn from our mistakes so that we don't repeat them and then we can truly rise above. This is a powerful lesson we can learn from my conversation with Chad Kalland. In this conversation, we go deep as Chad shares his courageous journey with us. He weathered the storm and came out on top, turning his life around and becoming a successful, purpose-driven CEO.

It's not easy to be a CEO, wife, mother of 4 and still manage to keep all the balls juggled and flowing. It takes a lot of courage, self-determination, and focus to drive you and your team through the hard times, while keeping a strong focus on your purpose, your WHY, and deal with the day-to-day tasks and challenges life throws our way. We have a great example here with Iffy Ibekwe. Today we covered the relevant topics of delegation vs micromanagement, staying in your zone of genius, self-belief and managing your team in the most effective and inspiring way.

Empathy is one of the most valued characteristics of a leader. and it has never been more relevant than right now when we're facing uncertainty and complexity at much higher levels than ever before. Today I'm talking to Killian Hemmy who shares his story and life-altering experiences as a leader, showing how to find strengths in vulnerability and how to lead with empathy. There's so much to learn from this conversation with Killian and one of my favorite nuggets is - if people can communicate better, we can achieve almost anything - definitely a principle that is close to my heart.

When we get to a time when we can acknowledge that feminine and masculine energy has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with being a whole human being. When we each do our part in making our contribution to the world, to alleviate suffering and increase joy, I think our world will be a very different place to live.
This week’s podcast is a live coaching session with Dr. Madlena Kantscheff. She's a dentist and is creating transformation. Our conversation moved her to tears as she became even more connected to her sense of mission in the world. This episode is a coaching session with many soulful, heartfelt, and mesmerizing moments.

It requires great effort to separate our work from home. That’s when we land up multitasking our vacation time. In this episode, Daphna shares her personal experience of trying to take a break at home, a staycation, and how to make it work for you.
