Armond DuBuque grew up just outside Seattle, Washington, and started skiing at the age of nine. He later picked up snowboarding, but by the early 1990s, while working at Stevens Pass Ski Area, he discovered Telemark skiing—and it stuck.
In his mid-20s, he set out to design his own Telemark binding, incorporating features he felt were missing from the options available at the time. With the help of his father, who had a small machine shop, he began prototyping his ideas and eventually produced a limited batch for public use. He called it the Ultimate Telemark Binding—or UTB, as it became known.
The UTB introduced several groundbreaking features that had never been seen before, including enclosed compression springs, rigid cables, a spring-loaded heel piece with bidirectional tension, a six-hole mounting pattern, a step-in mechanism, and built-in crampons.
This is an incredible story of youthful ambition, innovation, legal battles, and, of course, Telemark skiing. I had an amazing time documenting this chapter of Telemark history, and I hope you enjoy it too!

Dickie Hall played a pivotal role in reviving the Telemark turn, alongside many others, beginning in the 1970s. While he introduced the turn across the United States and later Europe, his influence on Telemark skiing in New England remains undeniable.
He was the founder and director of the North American Telemark Organization (N.A.T.O.) from 1975 to 2015, running a yearly schedule of workshops, camps, expeditions, and instructor and guide training programs. By his own estimate, he taught over 40,000 Telemark skiers and trained 1,000 instructors and guides worldwide.
Hall's career began in the early 1970s on the Killington Ski Patrol, followed by teaching Nordic skiing at nearby Mountain Meadows. He later established Trailhead Telemark and Backcountry Ski Center in Stockbridge. By the time he moved on from Trailhead, he had become Chief Examiner and Certification Chairman for PSIA-E Nordic. In the late '70s, he received an offer he couldn't refuse, an opportunity to start America's first alpine-based Telemark ski school at Mad River Glen.
Over the course of his career, he produced five films on Telemark and backcountry skiing, consulted and trained staff for the nation's leading outdoor schools, and served as an adjunct professor of ski mountaineering for the University of Alaska's Wilderness Studies program.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to have this conversation and document some of the incredible stories and history of Telemark skiing.
Please welcome to the podcast, Dickie Hall.

Today's guest is a legend in the skiing world with roots that trace back to Seattle, Washington, where he discovered skiing at the age of 11 at Alpental Ski Area. Embracing the freestyle trends of the 1970s, he became a passionate mogul skier with his sights set on the US Freestyle Team. Though he achieved that dream, it was tragically cut short after a knee injury on his very first run.
But that setback didn't stop him. He soon became a central figure in Gregg Stump's iconic ski films, starring in classics like Time Waits for Snowman, Blizzard of Aahhh's, and more, solidifying his place as a pioneer in the ski culture of the era.
In 1988, he took his talents to K2, working as a product manager. By the mid-90s, he spearheaded the creation of K2's groundbreaking Telemark ski division. Under his leadership, K2 Telemark dominated the market, capturing over 50% of it with innovative ski designs, eye-catching graphics, and unforgettable names like She's Piste, Hippy Stinx, Heli Stinx, and many more.
In my view, K2 Telemark didn't just keep the tradition of the Telemark turn alive—it redefined it, pushing the sport into the future and reshaping its image for a new generation.
It's an honor to welcome to the podcast the one and only Mike Hattrup!

Today I've got Kate Galliett Madsen on the podcast to talk over health and fitness in Telemark skiing. This has really proven to be a topic of interest that folks on my channel have been requesting more of lately and I wanted to have her back on to drop some knowledge for us. Kate and I are going to be working on some other video content to cover more health and fitness topics moving forward so I wanted to have her on to talk about some of the more general concepts we can be thinking about as we head into 2025.
Thanks for listening! — Josh Madsen

On this week's podcast I sit down for a conversation with the founding members of Midwest Telefest that included the owners, employees, and friends of Life Tools Adventure Outfitters. The Co-op turned outdoor shop was a hub for Telemark equipment in the Green Bay, WI area for many years and helped bring awareness to the great Telemark turn.

Today’s guest has been in the Snowsports industry for nearly 30 years. He has worked in various retail positions along with working as a rep for such brands as Karhu, Dynafit, and more. We had a great discussion about where Telemark has been and where it’s headed, where specialty retail might be going in the future, shifts in manufacturing, and why Telemark skiers are so passionate. I’m psyched to call him a friend and was really excited about this conversation we had recently.

Andy Jacobsen has been a friend of mine for 20+ years and is a Telemark skier that I’ve always respected for his great style, backcountry proficiency, and determined and skillful competition skiing.
He was always a top performer in the early Telemark Freeski competitions during the early to mid-2000s and graced the big screen not only in the early Toughguy Production movies, but also as one of the original Powderwhore crew during the 10 years that Powderwhore was producing movies.
We had a great discussion about Telemark competition and film history, his inspirations early on as a young Telemark skier, and his experiences and life lessons along the way.

World Telemark Day Celebrates 10 Years For Telemark skiers from around the world the 1st Saturday in March is a special day, it’s always World Telemark Day (WTD). This international celebration takes place this 2023-24 winter season on Saturday March 2nd, 2024 and marks one decade since its inception. “As a Telemark skier myself I saw how great the energy at Telemark gatherings always was,” said WTD Founder Josh Madsen. “So I created a de-centralized event for everyone around the world, every year, that both the individual and groups can celebrate at the same time.” That’s what sets World Telemark Day apart from a normal organized event at a specific location, because it can happen any place you want! Whether you are the only Telemark skier at your local ski area or live in an area where you can meet-up with a group of other like-minded freeheelers WTD is for everyone.
How Can You Participate?
Want To Take it To The Next Level?
For those individuals or groups looking to use World Telemark Day to help build their own event and grow their local Telemark scene here are some ideas:
“World Telemark Day is for everyone,” says Josh Madsen. “I can’t think of a better day to share the turn with first-timers, old friends, and your local community. It’s your day to make it what you want and share it with the world.”

Every year we get so many voicemails, emails, DMs, and the like regarding Telemark skiing. A lot of these questions are the same because there’s generally a lack of information online or people have a hard time finding the answers they need. So today I thought I’d put together my top list of FREQUENTLY ASKED TELEMARK QUESTIONS IN 2023 and see if I can offer some answers, opinions, and insights on things.
I’m looking to get into Telemark skiing. What type of ski should I use for my first setup?
I’m putting my first Telemark setup together. Should I focus where I spend my money on the skis, boots, or bindings? What is the most important things to think of?
I’m currently skiing a stiffer T-Race 75mm boot and need new boots. I don’t want to switch to NTN because I don’t want to convert all of my setups, what are my choices?
Where can I learn to Telemark ski? Should I get a lesson…is it worth it?
Do you carry Scarpa replacement mid-straps?
I’d love to get my kids on Telemark gear. Do you offer kids rentals? How does that work?
How many times can I mount and remount my skis?
I’m looking at getting new boots and trying to figure out my size because I don’t have a shop near me and I’m not sure what mondo sizing is.
Why do you guys say that there is no difference between whole and half sizes in Telemark boots?

There’s been some things that have gone down lately that really got me thinking about the current state of Telemark and where I think it’s heading in the next few years and beyond. At first these things that happened seemed like incidents that didn’t have much to do with each other, but as I started thinking more and more about them the connections between them become much more apparent to me.
So I thought I’d connect the dots in a podcast and talk a little bit about each experience I had, how I think these types of things impact Telemark skiing, and ultimately discuss my THREE TOP REASONS TELEMARK SKIING STRUGGLES TO GROW. Thanks for listening. - Madsen
This week I speak with my good friend Richard Schürf. He grew up in Munich, Germany and was introduced to Telemark skiing through Paul Parker and Yvon Chouinard while he was working for Patagonia in the 1980s.

We also announce our exciting partnership between Freeheel Life and Freeheeler.eu, which is his organization in Europe. We'll have a few pairs of our Protector skis over in Europe at his Festival tour stops that people can ski on.

Paul Flück started Telemark skiing back in 1989 and has been involved with everything from retail, to event management, marketing, and more. During the 2014-15 season he came up with a way to rent out the entire ski area of Schilthorn Piz-Gloria and create an on-hill experience called Telemark Only, where only Telemark skiers are allowed on the mountain for a private weekend event. 500-600 Telemark skiers continue to go to this event each year now and it’s THE spot to go in early May to wrap up the Telemark season worldwide.

Jakob Schiller is from New Mexico where he grew up and went to school. As a high schooler, and when the snow was lousy at his local resort, he used to pull out a pair of 210 cm Tua skis mounted with flimsy Voile telemark bindings and then strap on a pair of thrift shop leather telemark boots. This is how he got started in Telemark skiing many years ago.
He’s worked as a journalist for the likes of POWDER magazine, SKI, Outside, WIRE, and more over the years. But it was his recent piece in SKI, titled EVERYONE SHOULD OWN A TELEMARK SETUP, that caught my attention. We had a great conversation of what drives people to Telemark ski, how it looked back when both of us started vs. now, and maybe where it’s heading.

Decker McLean Jory grew up on the Front Range of Colorado near Golden. His family was steeped in the tradition of skiing and he grew up sliding on snow. Although he both alpine skied and snowboarded during his youth, he eventually would gravitate towards Telemark skiing.
In the early 2000s he was sponsored by LINE skis as a Telemark skier, competing in big air and slopestyle competions. During this era he would start living an endless winter traveling between North America and New Zealand in the constant search for good snow and good times.
He eventually transitioned from being on the LINE team over to the KARHU team, since both companies were owned by the same parent company at the time. During his time with KARHU, he continued to compete as well as become more involved with other things like ski graphics. He helped design the graphics for the KARHU TEAM 100 ski as well as the KARHU Agent of the same vintage.
Following his Telemark ski career he became passionate about sushi and worked in that industry until landing in his current gig in aerospace.

Sarah Clemensen is originally from Mendon, UT, a small town in Cache Valley near Logan, UT. She grew up always having cross-country skis around her house and was encouraged by her parents to get out and explore in the snow. Her first experience with making a Telemark turn was in high school, but it wasn’t until after she stopped playing collegiate sports & moved back to UT in the mid-90s that she jumped into making drop knee turns full-time.
During the late 1990s she would be exposed to Telemark racing as well as the burgeoning Telemark Freeski scene. After spending a short time on the US National Telemark Race Team, she shifted focus over to Telemark Freeski competitions exclusively with great success. That’s where she caught the eye of Josh “Bones” Murphy who asked her to film for his third installment of the Unparalleled Telemark movie series: Unparalleled 3: Soul Slide.
Her career skyrocketed quickly from there, locking down contracts with Nike ACG, Rossignol Telemark, & others. She continued with more podium finishes in the Telemark big mountain competitions as well as landing on the big screen of Warren Miller’s 54TH movie, JOURNEY in 2003.
She’s one of my great friends in Telemark and an amazing freeheel skier.

Russell Rainey is originally from Arkansas where he grew up enjoying the outdoors and getting exposed to many of his experiences through the Boy Scouts. It was one of his scouting experiences, at the age of 14, when he went to New Mexico and first saw the Rocky Mountains. He told me, “I came home from that trip, but I don’t think I really came home. My heart was in the mountains at that point.”
From that point forward it was a personal quest of his to go back to the mountains. As he got a little older he landed a job at a local shop called Take A Hike that sold mountaineering, backpacking, & hiking equipment in Arkansas. The owner of the shop encouraged him to go to a National Outdoor Leadership School, aka NOLS course in Colorado to enhance his outdoor knowledge and skills. This experience blew things wide open to the possibilities of working in the outdoor space.
His love for the big mountains soon led him to buy property near Wilson, WY where he built a small home for his wife and 2 kids. They moved there full-time and he began working for Exum Mountain Guides in the Teton area as well as teaching skiing at Grand Targhee. Although he was a self-described intermediate skier during this time, his time on the snow led him to want to attempt to create a better freeheel binding. This was the spark that led to the creation of his own company that would make some of the most iconic and important Telemark bindings of the last 3 decades.
Russell created and sold the his Telemark bindings from the late 1980s until the early 2000s. From stainless steel toe plates, to the 6-hole mounting pattern, to many many other things…his impact is still seen in our bindings today.
It was an absolute honor and a privilege to speak with him about his story, his bindings, and Telemark.

There are always questions floating around about Telemark skiing that go something like this: "What is the point?", "What are the benefits?", and "Is it easier?"
On today's episode I attempt to answer not only these more specific questions, but also the larger question of, "Is Telemark Skiing Still Relevant in 2022?"
DEFINITION OF RELEVANT:
Definition of relevant 1a: having significant and demonstrable bearing on the matter at hand b: affording evidence tending to prove or disprove the matter at issue or under discussionrelevant testimony c: having social relevance Sign-up for the mailing list: https://bit.ly/FHLMailingList

Jeff Cox always wanted to be an inventor. Even at the youngest ages, living on the east coast, he wanted to create things. As an adult he would become a mechanical engineer, but never gave up on his interest to create new ideas. In fact, he kept lists and lists of inventions that he thought he could possibly create one day.
His father was the first person he knew that Telemarked – which also sparked his interest later in life to try it himself. But it wasn’t until he saw his mom, who was also a Telemark skier, try to put on a leash with her mittens on that he thought about creating a better leash.
Bluebird Day Gear was born some time around 2011 and started with his newly designed leashes. Through feedback over the following years from some of his first retail shops, he added two other products: Smile Plates and Heel Levers.
In 2019 Jeff approached Freeheel Life Industries to acquire the small but successful brand. Although there were some delays in moving the operation to Salt Lake City because of Covid in 2020, BBDG is now back in full production and housed in the Freeheel Life HQ in SLC, UT.

Kevin Templin grew up moving around and skied a little bit before taking a job in the Carrbassat Valley where he worked at Sugar Loaf Ski Area in Maine. His brother had moved out to Alta, Utah and eventually convinced him to head out west where he scored a job at Alta Ski Area. During his stint there was when he brewed his first batch of beer with some Alta friends. They used to put it in an old mine cart and push it back into the old mine to keep the temperature correct.
After years of working at other breweries in the Salt Lake valley, he opened Templin Family Brewing in 2018. We talk about being a ski bum, google tans, and how cool it is to see people drinking TF beer up on the hill.

We spend the entire episode debriefing on the past two decades of Telemark and trying to bring to the surface some history in this often less spoken segment of the pinhead population.

Alex Johnson grew up in Salt Lake City, UT in a family full of Telemark skiers. Skiing was a way of life growing up and part of the regular family routine. Aside from moving around the mountains in the winter on skis, he’s passionate about hockey and grew up playing that as well.
Post high school he kept Telemark skiing and then graduated from Westminster College with a Finance degree. He found his way, to Freeheel Life, a few years back when we needed some help in our shipping department and has since moved up into the role of Finance Manager. We’re lucky to have him and he’s been a huge asset to our growing team.

Darrell Finlayson has been a ski patroller for 28 consecutive seasons at Deer Valley in Utah, many of those years on Telemark gear. He’s also a full-time bike patroller at Deer Valley during the summer.
He’s originally from New York State where he grew up skiing and enjoying the outdoors. After college he picked up his first Ski Patrol job at Mount Snow, Vermont for a few seasons before heading west. That’s when he scored his gig at Deer Valley almost 3 decades ago.
In the early 2000s he became friends with Noah and Jonah Howell who were both working at Deer Valley. The brothers, along with some of their friends started filming their backcountry outings and deep powder turns. These clips first appeared in a Toughguy Productions movie, under the name Powederwhore, and then in 2005 they dropped their own movie called PW05. My guest was one of the original cast members of the first Powderwhore movie and went on to appear in several others.
Aside from being a long time patroller, he’s also a proficient backcountry skier.

Hayley “Shred” Smith is originally from the east coast. After years of visiting her older brother, who was attending college in Utah, she also decided to head out to the outdoor Mecca herself after high school. She spent time working at the outdoor recreation center at the University of Utah, as well as in internship at the non-profit organization Ski Utah. This gave her various glimpses into the workings of the ski industry which would later lead her to other jobs, most notably with her current employer Voile Equipment.
While working in customer service and as a ski tech at Voile, she became interested in getting to know more about the Telemark equipment she was selling and picked up the turn herself. During the podcast she shares some awesome stories about part of the reason she started Telemarking and the need to feed her brain on Telemark gear knowledge while doing so.
It was a really fun conversation and I had a great time talking to the VoileVangelist herself.

Art Burrows hails from the beautiful state of Colorado where he grew up on the front range near Golden. He started skiing from a young age with his family and by the age of 12 would even hitchhike to the resorts by himself to get some turns in.
He was exposed to nordic-style backcountry touring some time in the early to mid-1970s which later led him into discovering the Telemark turn. By the late 1970s he and other early Telemark skiers, like his friend Paul Parker, began seeking bigger mountain objectives to drop knees on.
As a designer he was involved with Phoenix skis, designing top sheets, graphics, and even a magazine that came out to promote the brand. And in the 1990s he was an integral part of helping design the T1 Telemark boot with Scarpa that included an assymetric bellow on the toe of the boot.
Christopher Ulm is originally from York Beach, Maine where he learned to alpine ski at places like Sunday River. Once high school was over he decided to pursue a degree at the University of Maine and also participate in a ski industry certificate program. It was during this time he developed an interest in the education side of skiing, which later led him to move to Alta, UT and get a job as an instructor around 1990.
As he began to get involved with Telemark skiing in Utah, he helped organize events with the organization Wasatch Telemark. And in the early 2000s he became involved with helping support and create the USTSA Freeskiing series with Jeff Wright and many others. He served as the President of USTSA for almost a decade as well.
He currently lives in Salt Lake City where he still skis nearly 100 days per year.

Danny Walton is originally from Cleveland, OH where he learned to love snow and ski. In the mid-1990s he made his way west to the beautiful ski resort of Sun Valley. It was here that he really began to focus his on-snow time to Telemark skiing and eventually took over running the Sun Valley Telemark event series.
During his time running Sun Valley Tele, Danny was also an ambassador for companies like Rossignol Telemark & K2 Telemark. His photos of drop knee exploits and adventures have appeared in various publications, marketing materials, and the like.
He currently lives just outside of Sun Valley with his wife and two children, where he continues to enjoy Telemark turns, paddle board runs, and helping others enjoy the outdoors.

Inspired by the philosophies and techniques of the 19th century Hudson River School of artists, Ian’s artistic vision is one of revival. He works to restore the classical landscape movement with a modern insight on preservation ethics and reverence for wild spaces. Ian’s goal is not to create a perfect likeness of wild places, rather to communicate the unique feeling of time and place. More often than not, his creative process involves skiing, hiking, or biking to plein air painting locations across the American West.

Sun Valley Tele is a loose collective of like-minded skiers keeping the freeheel faith alive in the historic telemark bastion of Sun Valley, Idaho. The current roster took the reigns from local tele personality Danny “Irie” Walton in 2011, with 8-10 “board members” keeping the good times rolling for the last 11 years, mostly via one obnoxious group text. Though details remain hazy, the “organization” has been hosting annual events since the late 70s, persevering though multiple recessions, the advent of Dynafit, housing insecurity and innumerable low snow years before finally being stopped in their tracks by the pandemic in 2020. 2022 marked the triumphant return of the Sun Valley Tele event calendar with regional meetups at Bogus Basin, Soldier Mountain, and Rotarun ski area before culminating April 9th at the traditional Hawaiian Nationals slalom race and demo event. The 2022 Hawaiian Nationals will be remembered by some as “the worst snow we’ve ever skied”, but commemorated by all as “one helluva time” with deep crews and individuals answering the siren’s call from no fewer than 7 states across the west. This year’s Hawaiians highlights included 85 racers, free beer from series sponsor Sawtooth Brewery, the legendary mega-raffle, a DJ, reports of a speakeasy tattoo parlor, and complimentary demos from allies Bishop Bindings and 22 Designs. Sun Valley Tele would like to thank their sponsors, resort partners, Ullr, and most importantly their families for facilitating their continued telemark evangelism.

Mike Russell grew up in the farmlands of Delaware, as an athletic kid who was introduced to the Outdoors through Boy Scouts. This exposure to the outdoors at a young age, eventually led him to move to Colorado to pursue big dreams of big mountain skiing. It was in Colorado that he took an instructional clinic and absolutely fell in love with the tele turn.
Not only does Mike pursue ski goals for himself, he gives back to the community by organizing and leading backcountry adventures for the National Brotherhood of Skiers. This included bringing a Telemark demo to the NBS annual event last year, where he shared the Telemark turn with countless other snow loving people in the group.

Connie Marshall is originally from Ohio where she was first introduced to skiing. As a young adult she headed west to Utah where she landed a job in the ticket office at Alta Ski Area. What she thought would be a couple of seasons in Utah’s powder Mecca, turned into a 44-year career at the iconic ski area in Little Cottonwood Canyon. In the early 1990s she became Alta’s first Marketing & PR Manager and was instrumental during her tenure for bringing Alta to the forefront of ski culture around the world. Her creation of an athlete and photography team over 20 years ago was a key ingredient in keeping ski magazine and movie watchers salivating for the deep days in Utah.
She started Telemark skiing around 1978 when a small group of people that worked at the mountain started picking up gear and learning the turn and she’s still dropping a knee all of these years later.

In this episode I'm going to take you through the Freeheel Life ritual of The Smelly Kneepad. Where skis can't be over 70mm underfoot and must be 200+ cm in length. All bindings must be pre-G3 Targa i.e. 1997 or earlier. Leather boots only, but plastic cuffs are acceptable.
I also share some of my thoughts about the history of Telemark, why it's important, and why often times it's not always the best idea to fight against history in the name of progress.

I have a couple guests today. My friend CJ Coccia from Telemark Colorado is back on. He’s one of the brains behind Telemark Colorado along with his buds Brian Strickland & Erik Jensen. He is rolling solo today, reppin’ The TC Crew but he has brought with him two other guys:
Taylor “T2” Hennum: who was born in New Hampshire and grew up at a small hill called Granite Gorge. T2 moved to salt lake city last year to work at freeheel life and improve his tele turns.
He’s also brought along Curtis Devore — who since a young age, had a passion for photography and filmmaking. Growing up near Lake Tahoe, he always appreciated the outdoors and enjoyed using a camera to capture his favorite moments in life. He attended Colorado Film School, where he obtained a film degree emphasizing in Cinematography.
We had a great chat about Telemark Colorado’s movie WHY NOT? That dropped this past fall. All three of these guys were involved in the production in different ways and I thought it would be great to get them together for a chat about it all.

He originally started on snow via cross-country gear, but it was through the original Backcountry and Couloir magazines that he began to see some heavier cross-country downhill gear in the late 1980s. This sparked his interest and he started down the path of dropping knees.
He’s been a PSIA level III instructor in Telemark since 2014 as well as an Educational Telemark Staff Team Member for the PSIA Divisional Clinic Leader program.
On top of all those awesome credentials, He the Director of Telemark skiing at Bromley Mountain in Peru VT. It’s “The oldest Telemark school in North America.”
Hope you enjoyed last week’s podcast with Arno Klein Last week.
And next week I’ve got Todd Stuart.
Newsroom & Notes:
Arno Klein was born in 1940, in Austria, and learned how to ski from his father at a young age. By the early 1960s he began to pursue alpine ski instructing in Europe and in 1963 he was invited to visit Japan for the first time, with some other instructors, to observe ski teaching techniques.
In 1983 he saw the movie Freedom of The Heels which introduced him to the Telemark turn. He was immediately hooked on learning more about it and how to do it himself.
Over the years he’s helped organize a network of like-minded Telemark skiers from the region for races, gatherings, and the like. Aside from his contributions to Telemark in Europe, he’s also and avid ski historian and continues to research an array of topics related to snow sliding.

Adam Howard is an old friend of mine and someone who mentored me through my writing endeavors in Telemark skiing. He grew up in Jeffersonville, Vermont where he learned to ski at a very young age. He did some Telemark racing on the east coast in the early 90s before heading out west to attend Western State Colorado University in Gunnison, CO. He worked on the college newspaper during that time and this was his introduction into ski writing.
After ski patrolling in the winters and pounding nails in the summer, along with some freelance writing, he was presented with the opportunity to acquire Backcountry Magazine with some others. They released their first issue, as the new owners, in 2002.
He’s always been a huge supporter of Telemark skiing, both through his own endeavors and supporting others like myself. I’m honored he took the time to talk with me today.

Joe Smith is originally from Red Lodge, Montana. He learned to ski there at the local hill with his friends and was passionate about snow sliding from the start. His junior college days were spent in Northern California around Lake Tahoe skiing and adventuring more. By the early 1990s he headed to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City to finish his engineering degree and get in some powder skiing. It was in Utah that he first borrowed some Telemark equipment and got started on dropping knees on the hill.
He did a two-year stint working for Black Diamond Equipment, soon after the company moved to Salt Lake City, as a Quality Inspector while he was finishing school. But it was again in 1999 that he ended up at Black Diamond again, this time as a Process Engineer. During his time at BD, he was around for Telemark binding innovation that started around the Pitbull and went through such notable bindings as the Skyhoy, BD 01, 02, & 03. He also was there during the acquisition of Ascension skis, SKY Bindings, as well as helped with setting up the factory for Black Diamond ski manufacturing.

Erik Nordin is originally from Rättvik, Sweden. He is the youngest child and grew up in a family full of Telemark skiers. Once he could fit into some of the hand me down Telemark boots from his siblings, he never looked back and has been a Telemark skier ever since. As a young teenager he primarily focused on skiing in the terrain park at his home mountain of Kläppen. By age 14 he was already competing at the Scandinavian Big Mountain Championships in the much bigger mountains of Riksgränsen, in the Lappland area of Sweden.
After finishing school he decided to improve his big mountain skills by moving to Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada. This vastly improved his Telemark skills and in the years to come he competed and won 4 Scandinavian Big Mountain Telemark Championship titles.

Nikita Isaev is originally from Moscow, Russia. He grew up playing outside regularly in the winter on the slopes around town sledding as well as cross-country skiing. His father was an accomplished cross-country skier himself and also had access to downhill equipment during a time when many people did not. The boys and their father would often go to mountains near Sochi to ski on the slopes there.
After high school he moved to Vermont to attend St. Michael’s College. It was here that he continued to ski, and also had his first glimpse of Telemark skiers. Although it wasn’t until he was teaching skiing in Verbier, Switzerland that he picked up Telemark himself and began learning the turn.
He currently lives in the Krasnaya Polyana region of Russia where he has assembled his own fleet of Telemark equipment that he rents and loans out to people in the area.
This was a great conversation and a great glimpse into an area I’ve wanted to know more about and what Telemark skiers are there.
Today Josh explores his 5 Essentials Before Opening Day. It's his simple guide to getting ready, looking over gear, and exploring what you want to improve on.

Lorenzo Worster grew up in Boulder, Colorado where he grew up with Telemarking parents who took him on fun low angle hut trips in the area. He continued to Telemark ski through high school where he finished out his last few years at the well known Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale, Colorado.
After his secondary education he eventually landed in Lake Tahoe teaching snowboarding at Sugar Bowl Ski Area. It was around this time that he started competing in the United States Telemark Ski Association (USTSA) big mountain Telemark series. It was here that he began to meet many other like minded knee droppers that were pushing the limits of what could be done.
He’s been featured in countless Telemark ski movies, magazines, and events. Through the early to mid-2000s, as an athlete, he helped influence product development from companies like KARHU, G3, & Patagonia.

Paddy O’Connell works in the outdoor industry as a self-described word nerd and professional chit chatter -- This essentially means he’s a freelance writer, creator, storyteller, voice over talent, and multimedia producer. He has written for the top magazines and dot coms in the outdoors and has done work both in front of and behind the camera as talent and producer.
Telemark skiers may know him from his article in SKI Magazine in March of 2021 titled,

Or his more recent follow up piece for the same magazine titled,
I Made Fun Of Tele Skiing—and Then I Actually Tried It.

Justin and Miles are a father and son Telemark duo that have been long-time friends of Freeheel Life. Justin was one of our early customers. He luckily found us by way of some other shops that no longer wanted to carry Telemark gear and sent him to us. He dove in full-time right from the beginning of his Telemark journey and our FHL Team was there right along with him.
Miles, Justin's son, started coming to the shop with his father towards the end of high school. We talked him into trying Telemark and he soon ditched the alpine gear to go full-time into dropping knees.
Miles eventually started working at Freeheel Life three seasons ago as our Shipping and Fulfillment Agent. He moved into customer service and sales last year and has just accepted a position as the FHL Sales & Shop Manager. He'll replace Taylor Johnson who will be our new General Manager.

Mario Carr is originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew up skiing from a young age in southeast Wisconsin at areas like: Alpine Valley, Little Switzerland, and others. When he was still very young his parents purchased a cabin in Big Sky, Montana where he and his family would go for a few months every year to enjoy the bigger mountains of the west.
Hi exposure to Telemark skiing started when his parents learned how to drop knees out west in Big Sky, Montana and would come home to the Midwest and do it at their local hills. His parents would encourage him to try Telemark but to no avail — he just wasn’t interested. It wasn’t until he, himself, moved out to Big Sky, after high school to ski bum, that he decided to pick it up himself and started doing it full-time during the 2018-19 season.
During the past 4 seasons he began to hone his skills as a Telemark skier at Big Sky Resort. Early on he began freeheelin’ without poles, then later began using a small staff, and then during some hard snow cycles began playing around with carving. His unique approach to carving involves wider skis unlike the traditional race variety you may think of when talking about carving. He also fabricated some homemade hand pads, or “deeks” as he calls them, to allow him to lay over his turns while supporting his angulated body on these sliding hand discs.
He spent the past season as the Snow Reporter for Big Sky Resort keeping people in the loop about conditions and what’s skiing great on the mountain each day.

Steve Leeder is one of the OGs of Telemark freeride in North America. He’s originally from Ontario, Canada where he grew up skiing areas like Calabogie Peaks, Mount Pakenham, and White Face (NY). He was introduced to Telemark through his ski shop job in high school and decided to try it after his friend encouraged him to mount up some Tele skis.
He eventually moved to British Columbia to pursue more outdoor adventures around skiing and climbing. That’s where he ended up helping a friend open up and run a ski shop near Sun Peaks near Kamloops, BC. Over his time there he continued to Telemark as often as he could and started gaining some attention locally for his skills on the hill.
From the late 90s into the early 2000s he began competing in Freeride competitions, both Telemark and Alpine. He also appeared in several Telemark ski movies including Unparalleled Productions and Toughguy productions throughout those years.
He currently lives in New South Wales, Australia where he skis his local resort Perisher as well as all of the nearby backcountry zones. You’ll also find him working at Wilderness Sports, one of the long lasting shops in that area that has always been a stalwart supporter of Telemark skiing in Australia.

Alex learned how to Telemark ski in high school after seeing his uncle doing it and knew that was the path for him. After building bike rims as a job for a short time, he found a gig at DPS skis cutting out skis and doing the finish tunes on them. In 2015 he became the original Freeheel Life Ski Tech — mounting 100s of Telemark bindings for customers, for three years, as well as being an integral part of building the business into what it is today.
He currently lives in Angel Fire, New Mexico where he is a Ski Patroller and Bike Patroller for the resort. He’s also a current M-Equipment athlete. He helps with feedback on their products while serving the public on the slope and in-between backcountry adventures in the Sangre de Cristo mountains.
This week on the podcast Josh discusses 6 Telemark Trends in 2021. He covers emerging trends in boots and bindings, technique, and the re-surfacing of past trends. Enjoy.

Ty Dayberry is one of the most influential freeride Telemark athletes to ever live. Over the course of the last 20 years he’s appeared in nearly every Telemark movie production that has existed. He’s pushed the limits of what can be done on Telemark equipment both in the backcountry and in the park. And in the most recent years he started releasing some of the only Telemark short films that are available on the Internet.
He recently announced that he’ll be releasing his latest project Future Freeheel 2 which is a compilation of his best telemark outings of the past season. It’s chock-full some of the best backcountry lines, mini golf style skiing and tricks. He also is featured in Telemark Colorado‘s upcoming short film Why Not.. Both will be released this coming fall and will premier in various locations and online.

Tom Carter is another one of the great people I’ve met over the years that has influenced Telemark skiing for the better. In the 1970s he moved to the Yosemite Valley and lived and climbed there as part of a new generation of climbers. It was there that he was first introduced to backcountry touring and using early Telemark gear to navigate through the valley and surrounding areas to find untouched powder and use skis for travel.
His love for backcountry skiing and traveling in the mountains by way of his Freeheel gear led him and his partner Alan Bard to do big tours in the Eastern Sierra including setting up one of the well-known routes called the red line traverse.
He was also a guide for nearly 30 years in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada. He currently lives in Lake Tahoe where he loves to get out on his 3-pin gear and move quickly and efficiently through the mountains.
I first interviewed Tom in 2010 as part of my third feature Telemark film called Hippies Punx & Misfits. He’s a wealth of knowledge and I love talking to him about his passion for the mountains and his love of Telemark.

Ben Dolenc was born on the Front Range of Colorado where he grew up enjoying the outdoors: cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and hiking. When he went to college in Bozeman, Montana in the 90s he needed a way to get into the mountains during the winter. He assembled an inexpensive Telemark setup so he could hike around in the snow and when he could afford a lift ticket would cut his teeth at Bridger Bowl Ski Area.
He ended up going back to Colorado to study film for a short time at CU Boulder before he eventually turned to a ski bum lifestyle. While living in a cabin in Leadville, CO, with no heat, he began hanging out at Arapahoe Basin which is where he began to start meeting more Telemark skiers. It was there that he participated in some of the first Telemark big mountain competitions.
Through these competitions and being a part of some of the earliest Telemark freeride ski movies he developed sponsorships with companies like Nike & K2 Telemark. Over the course of his Telemark career he graced the screen of several Warren Miller ski movies, helped influence Freeheel product, was the 1st ever cover shot of Telemark Skier Magazine, started his own Telemark movie company called Falling Forward Films, and much much more.
He is currently a filmmaker, director, and producer based out of Ventura, CA. Producing over 18 television shows from American Idol to Ax Men for networks like NBC, Discovery Channel, and National Geographic, he found his niche creating content that documents the relationships surrounding complex characters like bush pilots, loggers, and fishermen.
Ben opened the Bowsprit Company a small production company in 2010 that he directs commercials, short films, and branded content through. Bowsprits clients have included Toyota, Lululemon, Red Bull, and Suzuki. In 2017, Wilshire Studios (NBC) tapped him to develop a television show around the New York Times best-selling book What Doesn't Kill Us.
His most recent short film is about two DIY land sailors who broke the 100 mph wind speed record mark in a garage-engineered hand-built land yacht named the Iron Duck.

Steve Berthel is another one of my favorite mid western Telemark skiers that I’ve met over the years. He grew up primarily in Minnesota where he learned how to ski on the local hills near his house and participated on the local ski team. He also spent many of his winters taking family vacations to Summit County, Colorado where he was able to experience the Rockies. It was during that time that he saw his first Telemark skiers at Monarch Mountain.
Then In 1974 he moved to Michigan. He was working at a local ski shop as a tech, skiing Timber Ridge, and was likely the first telemark skier in his area during that time. He was even told several times at different resorts that this type of skiing was not allowed at their hill for safety reasons and he would have to demonstrate his competency prior to being able to ride the Lifts.
In the late 1980s he started home brewing beer. He did that for a few years and during that time was introduced to Life Tools, a shop in Green Bay Wisconsin that had started a Telemark festival for the Midwest. They asked him to provide beer for the festival Which continued to be a staple for many years after. He became a professional beer brewer in 1996 and even owned his own brewery The Livery in Benton Harbor, Michigan in the mid-2000s.
He currently lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He loves playing pedal steel guitar along with Telemark skiing and every other outdoor activity.
Kurt Garcia grew up in Redford, MI just outside of Detroit. He went to college at Michigan Tech in the Upper Peninsula of the state where he first learned how to ski. While earning his degree as an Electrical Engineer his love for skiing grew and he spent countless hours skiing with his friends. After college he moved back to Detroit. By chance a friend invited him to start teaching skiing at Mt. Brighton. That same friend ended up introducing him to Telemark skiing as well as few years after that.
After years of people asking he and his friends where they could find Telemark gear to try locally, he decided to buy some additional gear to start a modest fleet to rent out to people. In 2020 he set up an LLC under the name Motor City Tele and began renting Telemark equipment to interested folks from the area.

Keith Rodney grew up on the east coast of the United States. He started skiing towards the end of high school but was immediately hooked and knew he'd found one his passions in life. His love of both skiing and also building led him to a technical college in Vermont where he could focus on both while getting an education.
It wasn't long until he migrated out west to the rocky mountains of Colorado. It was there that he was first introduced to Telemark skiing which would become his preferred method of snow travel.
Rodney was recently named to the US National Telemark Demo Team along with teammate Jim Shaw. The teams travel to deliver on-snow snow sports instructor training and guide the development of educational curriculum for the national association, such as new technical and teaching manuals, magazine articles, video content, and more and more webinars and online content.
On top of all of his responsibilities with his new assignment with the team, Rodney is also the acting V.P. for the United States Telemark Ski Association (USTSA).

Today I’m super excited to get two super rad guys on the podcast that I’ve worked close with over the past 5 years or so — Todd Herilla and Taylor Johnson. We are going to do a follow-up to last week’s podcast, specifically about the new Freeheel Life skis, The Protector 95 and 105.
Todd’s actually our first alpine skier on the podcast and has a deep rooted history in skiing, tuning and ski building. Taylor and I have worked with Todd since 2015 when we did our first small batch of Freeheel Life skis. We are going to be going over Todd’s experience as a ski maker, how we proto-typed the Protector skis, what materials we chose, and all the deep dive stuff to help you as a listener and Freeheel Lifer get to know the skis that we are going to be producing here in Salt Lake City.

Susie Sutphin grew up in Ohio. After high school she moved west to the Rocky Mountains to teach skiing at Keystone in Colorado. It was there that she was introduced to Telemark skiing. During her time in Summit County Colorado she witnessed classic events like the Breckenridge Bump Buffet, Telemark racing, and the emergence of a new surge of Telemark skiers pushing the limits of what was possible on freeheel gear.
Susie began selling advertising for Couloir Magazine and eventually moved to Truckee, California to work at the Couloir offices. It was during this time that she pitched the idea of a Telemark specific ski magazine to then Couloir Publisher Craig Dostie. Despite his initial lackluster response, she pursued the idea and was able to bring to life Telemark Skier magazine as an additional title under Couloir’s publishing in 2003.
After her time at Telemark Skier magazine and Couloir, she moved onto work for Patagonia in their athlete and events department. But it was her love of the mountains that led her back to Tahoe to help run the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival tour before venturing into starting and running the Tahoe Food Hub in 2012 that she continues to run today.

This week Josh is coming in hot with a few of his tips about adding size and shape to your own Telemark turn. Don't get stuck in the same cycle over and over with these tips and tricks to use natural terrain to improve.
Step 1: Identify where you’re at in your Telemark turn proficiency. Beginner, Intermediate, Expert, So Rad You Don’t Have a Description For Yourself
Step 2: Identify what type of turn you are making? Small, medium, large, no shape, etc.
Step 3: Pick out natural features that are going to give you boundaries, or expand your limits:
Moguls
Trees
Open Groomers / edge to edge
Rocky area
Step 4: Once you have added a 2nd style/shape turn to your repertoire, it's time to mix the two together.
Use open terrain first w/ no obstructions.
Then find some slopes that have sections to it. Make an obstacle course.
Get to where you are able to mix up your speed and the shape and style of your turns.
Step 5: Repeat, Repeat, Repeat

Holly Blefgen is one of the pioneers of Telemark skiing in Canada. Her deep love of snow and the outdoors started at a young age when she started skiing on the hills of her local golf course. Throughout her childhood she continued her love of skiing locally, and when she was 17 visited Alta, UT, in the USA, where she fell in love with deep powder. She went onto receiving a degree from the University of Guelph in Kinesiology.
In the early 1980s she traveled to Vermont where she met Dickie Hall along with other Telemark skiers where she learned more about the Telemark turn herself. After she went on to create her own Telemark business, Ski Telemark Ltd. Corporation with her partner Steve Kahn. They have served countless clients in Ontario, Canada with their mobile fleet of skis, boots, and bindings along with top-notch Telemark instruction. #SpreadTelemark #FreeheelLife

Jasmin Taylor is the first Briton to win a World Championship medal in telemark skiing and is 6 time British Champion. She has achieved 5 World Cup victories, across all 3 disciplines and has 32 World Cup podiums to her name.
Jaz joined the British Ski Academy as an athlete aged 12, competing as an alpine skier. After becoming the youngest British Ski Cross Champion ever, aged just 15, she made the England Freestyle Ski Team in 2009. It was during this time Jaz started telemark skiing, a discipline for which she showed potential on a far larger scale, competing in 2011 at her first World Junior Championship.
Jaz was invited to the World Junior Championships after the British Telemark Ski Team spotted her results in the French Cup series following her frequent podium appearances. Jaz has been on the team ever since.
During winter, she bases herself in Chamonix, France, and is currently training for the World Cup season and the World Championships. Persistent and hard-working, Jaz’s exceptional talent for telemarking is matched only by her fierce determination and ambition to one day be World Champion.

Today’s episode Josh goes back to one of the most basic questions there is — What is Telemark skiing? If you’re new to Telemark skiing or not-so-new to it the hope of this podcast is to help clear up some of the history of the turn, where it came from, how it came to be, and maybe a little bit on where it’s going. Winston Churchill once said, “The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.” It's a quote that can easily be applied to Telemark and one that illustrates Josh's philosophy on the importance of preserving and understanding the history of the turn in order to understand more about how to proceed in the future. #SpreadTelemark #FreeheelLife

Travis was born in Spearfish, SD and later moved to Salt Lake City, UT. He grew up skateboarding and picked up skiing through an elementary school program where they took the students to the hill for lessons. As he got into high school he stopped skiing and got into lowrider cars. This meant winters were spent more inside of a garage then out on a hill. It wasn’t until he picked up a job doing custom flooring with his neighbor that he was reacquainted with skiing and ultimately with Telemark skiing.
Dylan is 11 years old. He started Telemark skiing with his dad Travis after renting some kids Telemark gear from Freeheel Life. Over the past few years he’s become a proficient freeheel skier managing advanced and expert terrain. He loves skateboarding and spends time at the skate park and the mountains with his dad.
Luca Gasparini is a long time friend of mine and a fixture of the Italian Telemark scene. He was an early gear rep for Scarpa, an instructor, part of the La Skieda Telemark event that once took place in Livignio, Italy, writer, adventurer and now the creator of the Telemark Journal. #SpreadTelemark #FreeheelLife

Nat grew up in Winter Park, Colorado where he learned to nordic ski at a very young age. His mom collected water samples for the US Geological Survey and they would cover many miles by skiing. As he grew older his school schedule allowed him some more gravity fed activities. He started alpine racing, skiing bumps and nordic combined. He eventually picked up Telemark and backcountry skiing in Crested Butte and was around some of the very first alpine US Extreme Skiing competitions that were held in that area. He also participated in the first X Games, held in the Butte, in the skier cross event on his Telemark gear.
Shortly after that he organized the first ever Telemark big mountain competition at A-basin in the mid-1990s. He along with Shane McKonkey and Justin Patnode drafted up the rules for the Telemark big mountain events based off the IFSA rules that were being used at the time. He continued putting on big mountain events through the mid-2000s in addition to adding other events like slopestyle, big air and Telecross. He produced such Telemark movies as Laying It Down, Bliss, and the Total Telemark Series. His movie tours crisscrossed the country and mixed in events, athlete promotion, and demos to help raise awareness of Telemark skiing to the masses.

Today’s guest is one of the great minds of Telemark technique and instruction. Scotty McGee grew up in Nashville, TN where his father would take him skiing in nearby N. Carolina. He moved to Utah in high school where he continued to explore in the outdoors including cross-country skiing, hiking and eventually trying Telemark skiing.
After high school he went back east to Dartmouth in New Hampshire to study Psychology while still pursuing skiing as much as he could. Post college he headed west again where he began working at Grand Targhee outside of Driggs, ID. His ski career has led him to be a member of the PSIA Nordic Team from 2000-2008 & PSIA Nordic Team Coach 2008-2016. He is currently an Instructor/Trainer at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and the PSIA Divisional Examiner and Clinic Leader for Telemark, Cross Country and Alpine.
He has a wealth of knowledge in technical skiing and instruction and I learned a lot during this conversation. #SpreadTelemark #FreeheelLife

Dave Bombard grew up in Massachusetts and grew up skiing at Wachusset and other New England ski areas. After graduate school he headed west to be closer to skiing and the mountains while pursuing a career as an engineer, dealing with medical devices and surgical tools. Several of those years were in California, but he eventually moved to Colorado. During a stint of consulting and working remote he met Fin Doyle, the original owner of Bomber Industries and creator of the Bishop binding which was produced for about 5 years in the early 2000s. Fin and Dave originally created a partnership to re-launch the Bishop binding, but in the end Dave acquired the rights to the original design and launched his own business and along with it the Bishop 2.0.

Lena Attorresi, born from the love of two ski instructors in 1990 in Austria and raised in the Italian Appennini, now resides in Livigno, Italy. Her greatest passion had always been skiing and racing until she was 18 in FIS competition.
After becoming a ski instructor in 2010, she decided to settle in the Alps where she focused on Freestyle, Freeride and Telemark skiing. After a few years she became a ski and freestyle ski coach and currently coaches the Livigno Freestyle Ski Club.
When she realized that she only wanted to ski and teach all the children in the world, she began to move around the southern hemisphere, accumulating many seasons of experience. Italy, France, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Chile and Argentina are his best winter memories.
She has also started and runs the TelemarKids Project in Livignio and travels to other festivals to share and teach younger people how to telemark.

Hamdog 2069 is a group of weekend warriors from Golden, Colorado dedicated to denim, dive bars, and dropping knees. They are the winners of the 1st annual King of The Heel Video Competition put on by Telemark Colorado.

I have always said that Freeheel Life is the great Telemark experiment and these guys were the first to really put it on the line with me and get this place up and running. There are others that are part of this tight family but this core 4 definitely has a special place in my heart.

I first got wind of the Telemark Colorado guys a few years back when I started seeing some meetups and some edits go up online. Colorado has always been a strong hold of Telemark Skiers from the early days until now. I’ve worked with these guys on some T-shirt collaborations over the past few seasons for Freeheel Life and we helped support the king of the heel video competition this season… and I’m just super psyched on the style and energy that they are bringing to our Telemark community right now and wanted to find out more about how the whole thing started.
From Telemark Colorado's Website :
Telemark Colorado was put together to serve as the Apres ski bar for our niche knee dropping community. To indulge in the turn, indulge in the gear, maybe have a beer or two, and probably crack some jokes.
So for those who want to believe telemark is dead, let them think that. And for us, we can celebrate the aspects of telemark that brings us together and coming back for more. Let’s all keep our knees to the ground and our beers to the face! Welcome to Telemark Colorado.

The reason I wanted to do this podcast was to have at least one documented place where a newbie could find some answers to what is being spoken about. This podcast has helped me realize how often beginners are left out of the conversation because of verbiage and slang. So this one is for you. And if you’re an old crusty — you might find something useful too. Who knows!
So these are my TOP TEN THINGS I think every Telemark skier should have in their vocabulary to help them navigate a conversation with a more veteran Telemark skier:
HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT US
This is going to be more of a community building type of podcast around the business of Telemark. Think of it as a thought exercise.
These ideas are really central to the concepts I share with my employees at the Freeheel Life Shop, with the people that are close to me in Telemark, and I wanted to take the opportunity to share them here, with you, on the show.
This podcast may not be for you…I’m actually curious to see who this resonates with and who it does not. So let’s call this one experimental. #SpreadTelemark #FreeheelLife
Ty Dayberry has been a staple name in the Telemark world for the better part of two decades. He started his freeheel skiing journey at age 10 in and around South Lake Tahoe where he grew up. In 2004 Ty was showcased as an up-and coming, albeit still young, Telemark skier in Josh “Bones” Murphy’s final telemark ski film, Unparalleled 4: The Lost Season. He went on to appear in every major telemark ski production company of the time: Toughguy Productions, Lipstick Films, Falling Forward Films, Unparalleled Productions and the Powderwhores.
Over the years he helped innovate new tricks and style in Telemark park and backcountry skiing through his segments and online edits. He’s also been a free ride coach, and inspired countless young Telemark skiers, from around the world, to jump and innovate their own tricks.
In recent years Ty released his own Telemark short-film called Future Freeheel along with two other short films with his collaborator Bevan Waite under the name Mountain Grown Media. And the list of accomplishments goes on.
This week Josh shares his philosophy on the life cycle of a Telemark skier as they progress through various techniques and experiences. He explains why Telemark skiing isn't for everyone and why often times people quit.
The Life Cycle of a Telemark Skier is broken down into the following segments:
The Newbie
The Middle Zone
The Mindless Zone
Mastery

Keith Calhoun is from North Carolina and was part of the 2nd wave of Telemark skiers in Crested Butte in the late 1970s. He helped pioneer some of the early Telemark ski racing during that time as well as influence the equipment that was being used, including Steincomp style boots.
He currently lives back in North Carolina about 15 minutes from the Cataloochee ski area and still Telemark skis today. In fact he still spends one month every winter in his old stomping grounds of Crested Butte, Colorado.
Cities, ski resorts and mountain areas have closed due to the Coronavirus. So this week Josh takes you on a vicarious journey, via a little storytelling, to Moena, Italy to the first time he visited the Scufons and the Scufoneda Telemark festival. He goes in search of Spartico's cabin, enjoys the mountain disco of the Kusk, and more.
