A traditionalist when it comes to the DJ scene, DJ Lithium is known to be a headstrong and vocal supporter of Vinyl DJs and vinyl phonograph records. Musically he has been waving the trance flag proudly for years, and continues to do so, but admittedly as trance DJ’s have turned from vinyl to digital formats, he has begun leaning towards the more underground sounds of techno and tech genres where vinyl is still alive and thriving. It started as a typical day in the heat of the Canadian summer. Festival season was in full swing! The event was called Connect and the ravers, campers and freaks roamed the wilderness. Enter Sir Tony Morello, the pride of the west and quite possibly the finest mixing talent in the Northern hemisphere. No sooner had our hero stepped onto the main stage, when in typical Canadian weather freakishness, it suddenly erupted with thunderstorms! oh no! horrors! The main stage forced a shutdown, the music stopped and dancers ran for cover leaving the field a barren wasteland. Undaunted by tragedy, the invincible Tony began plotting his next move, the storm would soon pass and he would be ready! Indeed as the sun finally peaked out and flooded the grass with warmth, what occurred next has become the fire of legend! Tony opened with magic and a never before heard style of super sunny boom, he coaxed the scattered flock back onto the field. They came from far and wide, they shook off the wet and the cold with the warmth of the master at work. A field of wet grass no more, smiles and the rhythm of warm feet pounded the ground, united in dance, not even caring as grass turned to mud and spirits lifted high, come rain or thunder, nothing could bring them down! In 1991 the strangest event in Dance music history occured. It was staged by the nonconformist and mysterious electronic pioneers known as the KLF. A highly exclusive concert was to take place on the summer solstice of 1991 on the Hebridean island of Jura. Only a small group of the worlds elite were invited. It was no ordinary concert, and the events of that night are now the story of a bizarre and mystical legend. DJ Hans, being at that time a man of mystery and interest himself, was invited. Interesting title! Strange monsters or greek mythology? Not. Actually it's a reference to the way in which this set was recorded by the mysterious and masterful DJ Lithium. No surprise the mix was recorded through another retro analogue mixer (like his last), this one the rare, Intimidation Blue mixer. Unique not only for it's pure and warm analogue circuitry, but also in that is runs a completely MONO signal. Yes pure vintage mono, as in one track, not stereo. Hence the title Cyclops meaning "ONE". You will find the mix warm and full, and with just a tad of mastering witchcraft to stereoize it a bit for your modern digital devices, it will have you dancing it up and wanting more! Counter Weight was recorded using the Intimidation Apex Gold, a simple but effective, fully analogue, DJ mixer featuring only two channels and rotary volume knobs in place of line faders, (totally old school)) a cross fader and triple EQ on each channel plus gain. Being a fully analogue mix right from the vinyl on Technics SL1200’s, through the mixer, and direct to the CDR, the result is unique and really quite amazing! Unlike most of today’s digital tracks recorded through digital mixers, the recording came out wonderfully full of dynamic range, volume, warmth and soul! Counter Weight is as untouched as it possibly can be from the digital technology that seems to be drowning us, perhaps as a reminder of what we have all lost over the last couple of decades. No post effects, mastering or sweetening have been applied to this mix and it has been encoded using the absolutely highest Mp3 resolution and bit rate possible. Counter Weight is just that - a heavy, meaningful mix, to balance out the noise and mindlessness from this new “digital” century. Baaaaaaaamm!!!! No chaser required as this one goes down smooth all the way. Also take note we have spotted the elusive, never at his post, Stormtrooper, TK-421! We caught a glimps of him flying down the freeway South of Los Angeles in a a hot white sports car in a real big hurry. He was doing about a buck 40 but we snapped a pic! Yes in fact the Master Kat - DJ Lithium - did play this very set live in Calgary in June 2012! Of course it was all vinyl, did you hear the needle drop, and the static at the start? Proof indeed! Vinyl records is an art form to mix and the DJ a craftsmen. Sadly it's a dying art as fewer and fewer DJ's spin the legendary "wheels of steel" and almost no new DJ's learn the skills. Guess nobody knows that vinyl records are the pathway to immortality! As such DJ Lithium will live forever. What about you? Have you ever lost someone you cared deeply for? Without fail it comes on our journey through life. We know that death is a part of the story of life. Our dear DrunKen MonKey, MC Dirty -Daryl- (in serious times we all have real names) just lost a friend, close to him and family. His name was Morgan. Morgan was loved and dear to Daryl and his sister. He will be remembered for his smiling face, and we all have faith that Morgan is smiling right now from wherever he is, maybe a luxury box seat in the sky. Let us think that Morgan was with Daryl, as he recorded this set with him in mind. For when tradgedy strikes, it's music that will guide us through. He's a DJ, a producer, an actor, a pornstar, a king fu master, and a professional surfer. What else would explain all those stamps in his passport? Digging a little deeper our Drunken Monkey sources on the inside found his name attached to a covert CIA operation in Belgium that occured simultaneous to his recent gig in Brussels. Coincidence? It was around the year 2001. The infamous Tune Family was ripping up parties and Thomas The Teacher toured Western Canada as the right hand man of Earl Von Bye, but really second to none. Thomas was THE man! A master of house music, he turned every performance on its head and made the impossible possible! Then while at the top of his game, suddenly and inexplicably, he disappeared. It’s been considered one of the strangest mysteries of the electronic dance world. Gone without a trace, the only evidence: his final DJ set recorded on a gold disc, and a lock of hair the oddly defies DNA analysis. Like Elvis there have been many alleged sightings around the globe, at Mexican taco stands, NYC subway sightings, on arctic whaling expeditions and the usual riff raff. In 2009 Collin Stone recorded and released this set - Intelligent Darkness - to few people with little fanfare, it just kinda slipped under the radar...timing is everything so they say. Two years later he signs himself back up on Facebook, Drunken Monkey is one day late releasing the podcast, and NASA launches the final mission of the Space Shuttle Endeavor...coincidence? Ha! We all know there is no such thing as coincidence, everything happens for a reason. Surely you can see the connection and are watching with wonder and anticipation as witnesses to the big picture of the universe at work. We call this Synchrodestiny. Not following? OK try this simple meditation: First find a comfortable position in a quiet place and play Intelligent Darkness at a comfortable volume. Place your hands on your lap with the palms facing upward. Close your eyes and begin witnessing your breath and envision the music flowing through you as you listen and breath. On the inhale think of the word "so", on the exhale, think of the word "hum". Gradually both the breath and the sound will become quieter and quieter, and the breath becomes so quiet that it almost seems to stop. By quieting your breath, you quiet your mind. When you transcend, the mantra "so-hum" entirely disappears, and your breath pauses momentarily. Time itself comes to a stop and you're now in the field of pure consciousness, the non local domain, spirit, the ground of being. In a recent survey conducted by Black Tiger Recording, fans from around the world agreed that the favorite Earl Von Bye set of all time was 2003's Moonshot. Some people went as far as using the word "Masterpiece". Certainly it is known that every set, from the man that only records 1 annual per year, is programmed and executed to perfection. Back in 1998 DJ Hans recorded an epic set at the infamous Full Moon party on Sunrise Beach, Koh Phangan, Tailand. It was a bit of a big deal! People laughed, people cried and some believed he was the next messiah. Hans became a legend. It has even been said that in one night, Hans had singlehandedly set the stage for the popular surge in Trance music that lasted the next 5 years and beyond. Tragically the recording was lost. Perhaps taken, gone into the sand, or lost to the wind...no one knows. All Hans remembers is the smell of booze, cheap plastic women, a bright light at the end of a tunnel...then waking up face down in sand 5 days later in Northern Queensland with one missing hand. While legend of the tapes existence persisted, supposedly floating around on some damn thing called the "interweb", it never actually surfaced. Some say that on a full moon night the music can still be heard floating on the winds of the universe. 12 years later, Vancouver, Black Tiger Recordings studio on a full moon night. A dusty beat up package is deliverd by a smiling Buddha riding a white goat. Inside covered in sand is a busted up cassette, the tape is a mess of cut up strands. Is this real or is this just day 3 of Chihuahuan desert peyote? The Buddha becons Hans to follow him into the light at the end of the tunnel... Never one to conform, Hans grabs the tape and slams the door. 7 months later, with a shop vac, 9 rolls of tape, 5 recording engineers and a small team of experts, the recording was recoverd, restored and remastered.
