Nanobrew (the Podcast) is hosted by Jason Wuerfel, owner/operator of Books & Brews, a combination used bookstore and nanobrewery in Indianapolis, Indiana. Join Jason and his trusty brewers Joel and Bryan as they give you an insight into what it's like to start a nanobrewery, give you small business tips, talk to interesting people, and have a few pints while chatting about books, brews, movies, games, and other topics.
The gang is back! Holy hell I love this podcast so much! Thank you so much to Bryan, Lauren, and Pete for coming back and joining me on this crazy thing called Nanobrew: The Podcast.
On this episode, the gang talks about "manifesting" success along the lines of Matthew McConaughey's memoir "Greenlights." This episode has a little bit of everything - old business, new business, art in your face, beef of the week, and everything in between!
Back in the day Murder Shoes Max leads "Reviews by a 21-year-old" for our review for Brass Monkey. Per the Funky Boss, "This tastes like something Jonah Hill would give a girl in Superbad."
This clip comes from Nanobrew's 6th episode ever back in 2015 with the super-original crew of Jason, Joel, and Bryan. In this throwback micro-content Jason describes one of the big motivators of the original concept that helped defined the Books & Brews business model.
In this micro-content throwback clip, Jason tells the story of when he heard a speaker that would alter the course of his career. This clip is from the early days of Nanobrew: The Podcast circa 2015.
This micro-content throwback from 2014 highlights our concept "Doing business on the Nanoscale: Win Aggressive, Lose Aggressive." The net change is always positive.
Shout out to Brad Sprauer one of the original supporters of Books & Brews that helped get us up and on our feet.
The gang is back talking about the #1 reason most entrepreneurs fail. We were pretty well behaved on this podcast until the beer started to kick in for the second half.
The Funky Boss brings up an interesting topic of Timecop and Ugly Pete: who are we as people? How do we measure self worth? How do we judge ourselves? If people deny the way we identify ourselves does that lower our self worth?
This sounds very technical but most of the time it's fart jokes like you're used to with Nanobrew. Cheers!
Timecop and The Funky Boss welcome the Hoffmeister to the podcast to beef on people who say they want to be trained but actually....don't care (to put it lightly). If you're a round peg in a square hole? No amount of square training is going to make you a square. Move on, be happy, cut your losses, and stop being a crybaby about being a square world WHEN YOU'RE OBVIOUSLY A ROUND PEG.
If you hang in there until the end of this episode you get to hear Jason cry his eyes out talking about how much he loves and appreciates his employees. Side note - he doesn't need to drink to get emotional but it helps. The back story is the gang forgets to eat lunch or dinner then proceeds to drinking way too much and sprawling, long-winded shenanigans pursue. We cut out a large portion of this podcast and it's still insanely long. I hope you get a few giggles and gives you some insight into the history of B&B and how much we love we what we do.
Originally recorded in the summer of 2017 when Books & Brews was blasting off, the Funky Boss gives his #1 advice for starting a business and making a money, which is, to quote Timecop, "Ballin on a Budget!" This is the tip: 90/10 rule - 90% of your time brings money into the business, 10% of the time saving money. Listen for more ridiculous shenanigans, beat boxing, and a blast from the past.
On this episode of Nanobrew: The Podcast, the Funky Boss talks about the book, "This is Marketing," by Seth Godin, Timecop gives his review of the reality show Love at First Sight, and Burnsie comes by to once again beef on Pistol Pete. The gang also solves the question - who would win in a Celebrity Deathmatch: the Blue Man Group or the Jabbawockeez.
The Funky Boss, Timecop, and Murder Shoes Max wax intellectual about business, life, movies, and hip hop, as per usual. Jason talks about how dumb people are making lots of money and how much business owners have no idea who their real competitors are.
The dynamic duo of the Funky Boss and Timecop are back to chat about sci-fi movies, having radical candor, really bad dreams, and plenty of other small business shenanigans. Jason describes how learning to deal with owning a business while being a literal person is difficult.
Throwback episode from March 6th, 2016, where the original trio of the Funky Boss, Timecop, and Murder Shoes Max give shout outs to the guests that helped get Books & Brews reach the starting point of their explosive growth in 2016. Jason tells the story of taking regulars Guy, Pete, and Komal, to go see the Zionsville space that become B&B's 2nd location.
The gang is back with the Funky Boss, Timecop, and Burnsie to discuss why the boss is always a dick.
Ben from Zionsville stops by and the Funky Boss and Timecop immediately derail any sense of coherent conversation (sorry, Ben). We do get a chance to be serious for a hot minute in the middle about charisma - and how most think it's a wasted stat in both D&D and life.
Oh boy, then Ben has to go and Ugly Pete comes on for the second half of the show. I had to cut a solid 30 minutes out because this went long as we are terrible people (sorry, mom).
Books & Brews Operations Specialist Tyler Danner drops by the podcast and discusses why it's important to have a competitive edge in life, business, and baseball (everyone drink)
Nanobrew: The Podcast's Reunion tour continues with our #2 most frequented guest ever, Sarah Burns, returns to the show to talk about Super Heroes, Disney movies, heavy metal, and Mexican candy.
Shenanigans, bad words, beer, candy, Disney, Marvel, stuff. A Nanobrew classic.
Nanobrew: The Podcast is back with all new small business shenanigans featuring Ugly Pete from Water Performance Technologies. We talk about old business, new business, mobster movies, Aladdin the horror movie, and so much more.
Keep checking back for more new episodes every Friday morning just in time for your weekend. I apologize to my mom for all the cuss words.
On this PARTY IN TE BACK episode of Nanobrew The Podcast, we talk about movies, art, and breakfast cereals.
Back in 2015-2016 when we used to get -super- drunk every episode (sorry, mom) we would beatbox into every segment and always mix up the different styles (kind of). Here is just a small sample I put together to relive the glory days when things were much simpler around here! I hope you enjoy!
This is a late posting of an old episode of us having some fun and kicking around our feeling on the re-emerging sports card marketing amongst other things. Come join us for some small business shenanigans.
Jason, CEO of Books & Brews and Flat12 Bierwerks, AKA the Funky Boss, lays out Operation Roadhouse - be nice, to everyone, all the time. Listen carefully, we're about to do something no one else is doing.
For the BUSINESS IN THE FRONT, the crew talks about branding themselves on social media.
The group talks about their nano stories, and what small thing or meeting made them who they became.
We had some technical difficulties in the first part of the Words Matter episode so this is a very brief Party in the Back segment we recorded where I tell a funny story about embarrassing Bryan's work ethic and beef on getting old.
This is part 1 (Business in the Front) of our Words Matter podcast where we discuss why the words that we use are so critical in the communication and systemization of our business and how they have a psychological effect on us every day.
This is part 2 (Party in the Back) of our Customer Service Techniques podcast where we talk Game of Thrones, I beef on basketball, and we Stump the Brewer.
Our new format on Nanborew: The Podcast is break our "business in the front" and "party in the back" parts of the show into two separate podcasts. Now you can enjoy releases coming every Monday and Thursday.
Also be on the lookout for our new Nanborew Network podcast website - we will have daily content coming at you very soon! Until, listen to this episode and learn how to talk to people. Cheers!
Short staffed for the podcast, but we still had a great episode thanks to a surprise visit from Zack. Within the first few minutes, Zack is given the coolest podcast nickname.
Little rushed with the recording this week, but we had a very fun show. We go over last weeks podcast with Old Business, and we talk about winning at little league doesn't set you up for success.
This is a fun episode that I don't have time to write a synopsis but it's hilarious, I promise.
The podcast crew gets to know their customers and take about the movies of Tom Cruise.

A lot of our art deals with violent revenge because violence is our first action when dealing with each other.
Success is the best revenge, and Brandon called what the revenge angle was gonna be.
The emotional reactions we have are designed to make you feel better. It doesn’t gear you toward a faster solution. It doesn’t get you to the final solution any quicker.

Some people are just not going to be as good as you. Sometimes, you’re going to have to reset and kick people in the ass. If they can’t see the value in that, let them leave.
Has Bryan watched Black Mirror: Bandersnatch? The world wants to know.
No one besides Jason had guilty pleasures... apparently.
Every story is the same story. Everything, everywhere has conflict.

The podcast crew tries out some new nicknames with little success.
We go through Old Business at a record pace.
We shout out to law schools, and being the Angles Advocate in New Business.
When it comes to Art In Your Face, we "NAILED IT".
Lastly we beef on parents, Theybies and AC Adapters.
In this episode, the gang talks about how a business is the video game hard mode of life, and it gets crazy with Art In Your Face.
One of the biggest misnomers in all of sports is that defense wins championships. And it's the same in business. Going on offense (revenue generation) always trumps great defense (limiting expenses). And normally you can't do both at the same time. The gang discusses this topic but the bulk of the episode is nonsense.
On your really on the same page with your staff and/or co-workers? How do you know? The gang pontificates upon misunderstandings in the workplace and how the smallest of miscommunications can fester and lead to huge problems. Then we talk about movies and other dumb stuff. And cuss a lot, as normal. Sorry, mom.
Sometimes we like to make high-level requests of our employees here at Books & Brews to see if the staff can rise to the challenge: punch in, do your job, punch out. How do you think that goes? Not good, y'all, not good. You want to open a business? Start realizing that those three simple steps are the exception and not the rule.
"First come the innovators then come the imitators then come the idiots." ~something Mark Cuban said once on Shark Tank to the best of my memory. Here's a point that Mark didn't cover - today's innovators can quickly become tomorrow's idiots if they don't continue to innovate. Just because you were at the top of the game for years doesn't mean you can stop pushing the boundaries of your industry.
The gang reacts as Jason comes in with the hot take that the kids these days saying, "Adulting is hard," is really ridiculous. How dare he? Amiright? Seriously, though, Step Brothers: The Movie is not funny in real life. It's not out of line to expect your employees to grow up - but it's your job to help them.
The greatest marketing campaign of all-time was accomplished accidentally by a video game called Contra by the original Nintendo Entertainment System. What did they do? How did they do it? How can you apply these tactics to your business or workplace? I guess you have to listen and find out. Plus there's a lot of fart jokes.
"You Want Crazy? I Got Your Crazy." ~Britney Spears, Toxic. What can the gang learn from Britney's immortal, best-selling words? Knowing this group, probably nothing. Here's is the point that is attempted to make: sometimes when people try to pin you into a corner with who they think you are, the easiest thing to do is to own it an dial it up to 11. If they thin you're being mean, show them what being mean really looks like. Problem solved. Winky face.
The gang is back after a bit of a delay to let you know that if you want to own a business you need to know the owner's job description - you're going to have to deal with the worst bits of owning a business at all time. Brandon informs the crew on the current status of The Undertaker, Jason's Guilty Pleasure of the Week is Robot Wars, Bryan is just seeing Watchers for the first time, and Komal's mind is blown to find out Rorschach is the same actor as Kelly from the original Bad News Bears.
The gang comes back with their usual business shenanigans and the conversation quickly divulges into the future cyborg olympics. Jason talks about how Books & Brews uses community building and the empowerment of "champions" to develop niches within niches, Bryan loses Stump the Brewer under league protest, Brandon arts in our face about horror movies, and Komal tells the story of being run over by a car and being mugged at the same time.
The gang is back with their usual shenanigans, explaining why all being in business means is fighting with people about everything all the time always. Bryan gives his tips for making telemarketers mad, Komal returns from Canada and talks about her glacier water purchase (and Bryan gets jealous), Justin shares his affinity for Caramel Appeletinis, and we talk about Dick Butkus for way too long.
Sorry for the patchy audio at parts in this episode everyone, we got some background noise that we can remove. Womp Womp.
In this episode...the gang is back with no special guest but lots of fun as they discuss reverse engineering being a people person, the principle of "it's not what you say but how you say it," and if you want to be in charge you should be careful what you wish for. Jason describes the best on-field baseball diss of all-time, Brandon discusses the new cartoon Disenchanted, Komal is just now discovering Hamilton, and Bryan loses miserably in Stump the Brewer.
Kevin from Out Here Having a Pint Podcast joins the gang (link below) and immediately mesmerizes us with the details of his rap career. Jason interviews Kevin about his relationship as an investor in helping start Rusted Silo Southern BBQ & Brewhouse, Brandon beefs on Facebook listening in our conversations, Bryan confesses his love for Captain Planet, and Justin - AKA the Human Dump Bucket - makes his podcast debut.
Out Here Having a Pint Podcast - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/out-here-having-a-pint-podcast/id1332382088?mt=2
Rusted Silo Southern BBQ & Brewhouse - https://rustedsilobrewhouse.com/
The gang talks about the Jim Collin's theory from his book, "Good to Great," that when building a company the "who" is more important than the "what." Jason talks about Mark Roberts, the world's most famous streaker, Bryan beefs on the fast food industry, Brandon beefs on the internet listening in on his conversations, and Komal leaves early cause she has better thing to do. And we totally stump the brewer cause Bryan dumb.
Plus we're all pretty sure that Kevin McCalister from Home Alone went on to be Jigsaw from the Saw movies.
Plus swear words. Sorry, mom.
The gang returns with a raucous episode of shenanigans about the art of shaking it off via the great Taylor Swift. Jason explains why Finding Forrester is the greatest motivational movie of all-time and uses lots of ten dollar words, Bryan defends the stupid invention that is the Spork, Komal's story gets cut for time, and Kyle is present but quietly listens and learns like a horror movie villain that will eventually assume our identities.
Lots of Bryan's parts got edited out because he has a dirty, filthy mouth. You're welcome, mom.
The dudes from Drnk Cltr podcast (https://www.drnkcltr.com/podcast/) stop by to hang out with us and chat about small business shenanigans. We get the inside info on how they started their podcast and soon we found ourselves in a very spirited debate about the role of the owner (podcast/brewery/gym) and how important it is to give their stories to their listeners/customers.
This was a really fun episode to record and even though we didn't get to most of the silly pop culture talk our listeners have grown to expect from us, I think this is a great conversation with several different opinions for anyone interested in starting a business to listen to.
Plus we don't swear as much as usual. You're welcome, mom.
The gang talks about approaching every day with a relentless attitude for success: "Today is the day you notice me." I didn't have time to edit this episode or really remember what we talked about but Brandon assures me it was one of our best episodes ever. I'm sure we stumped Bryan because he's brain doesn't work good. And I'm sure Jason said really smart things because his brain works good.
The gang gives their advise on the best way to get a raise, Cecilia talks about her dancing past, Jason gets his business inspiration from Starcraft 2, Bryan can't stop talking about The Island, Kyle displays his road rage, and Komal talks about how she want's to see Michael Bay's version of A Quiet Place.
The gang welcomes Scott from the Indianapolis Coffee Guide and discuss the big iconic promotions done by some of the biggest brands on the planet. All Jason knows about Pepsi is the Britney Spears commercial, Scott beefs on electric scooters, Bryan's goes full Time Cop on us and discusses the movie Alien like it just came out, Komal gave a bunch of important business advice while her mic was muted, Mike encourages the audience steal HBO, and last but certainly least Brandon said words.
Check out Scott's work here - https://www.indianapoliscoffeeguide.com/ - as well as on Instagram @indianapoliscoffee
The gang pretends they're smart and talks about string theory and quantum physics, imagining the different versions of themselves in alternate universes. Komal beefs on the personal trainer version of herself, Brian can only imagine himself as lazy, Mike tells us about his phobia of touching unfinished lumber, Jason talks about the deep messages inside the Incredibles 2, and Brandon talks about toys. Things got a little crazy during Stump the Brewer at the end so I apologize to my mother for the bad words.
This week on Nanobrew: The Podcast things get real as the gang talks about times in their life where they were forced to develop mental toughness and how it shaped their future. There are the usual shenanigans sprinkled in, but this is an excellent episode about how the trials in our lives force us to grow up and get tougher.
This episode was supposed to be about "Broke Marketing Techniques," but the conversation gets quickly derailed and the gang never actually gets back on track. Jason tells a story about Nick Saban, Komal beefs on Home Depot, Bryan avoids Stump the Brewer by continually changing the subject, and Kyle believes that soup shouldn't be considered a meal.
Dustin from the Barrel Chat podcast stops by and we chat about beer and how bad a batch has to be for us to dump it. Spoiler alert, I will personally choke down a lot of bad beer before I toss it down the train. Dustin talks about being an America Ninja Warrior, Jason beefs on Google Docs, Bryan doesn't know what a snowmobile is, the ante ups to $230 for John Green to punch Mike in the face, and we all say goodbye to the COO Molly as she leaves us for more less stressful work environments.
We actually didn't say too many cuss words this episode. You're welcome, mom.
The gang sneaks in a quick mini-episode to appease their massive fan base this week since Jason's daughter was sick last week and we couldn't record (shout out Lou).
The topic this week is the pros and cons of franchising. Bryan doesn't contribute, Brandon makes his return to the podcast, Mike mumbles (weird), Molly beefs on her co-workers cause she's quitting the company and doesn't give af, and Jason saves the podcast with a lot of really amazing insight into the franchising world.
The gang has two special guests in the studio this week: Pete Farrar of Water Performance Technology and Dave Sommers of Mad Mushroom Pizza and US Pizza Team fame.
Pete talks about yelling at children, Dave tells stories of worldwide pizza competitions, Jason talks to his crew passively aggressively about why he hates them, Mike brings up the time his wife called Jason a pussy, and Molly brings the haterade on employees that can't get their asses to work on time. Bryan got stumped at the end but I cut it because it got rather dirty rather quickly (you're welcome, Mom). However, the word "pussy" is used about 15 times in a few minutes at the end (sorry, Mom).
This week the gang chats about The Ballpark Dress Code. Mike mumbles a lot, Bryan incriminates himself, Jason talks about his love for Galaxy Quest, and guest Brent talks about his life on the road as a musician.
I tried to cut out some of the cuss words, but I (mostly) gave up. Sorry, mom.
The gang teaches you how to take your restaurant from good to great while going through all the usual shenanigans - Old Business, Art in Your Face, Guilty Pleasure of the Week, Wendy's Beef of the Week, and Stump the Brewer. We welcome frequent guest Sarah Burns back on the podcast on the 2nd half of the show, Jason gives a speed reading lesson, Mike brings everyone up to speed on Handmaid's Tale and continues his beef on John Green, and Molly tells a story of when she shotgunned two cans of beer before a Fleetwood Mac concert.
Jon Couch comes on the podcast to talk about our May the 4th be with you celebration as well as X-Wing and other Star Wars-based games. The Nanotip revolves around identifying the competition for your business, Jason beefs on the word "nerd," the gang puts up $30 to see John Green punch Mike in the face, and Bryan loses Stump the Brewer just like every other week in history.
The gang welcomes Andrieu from Hubbard & Cravens and he mesmerizes us about coffee knowledge from roasting science to the origin of the decaffeination process. Jason talks about the most important trait of entrepreneurship, Bryan fills us in on the masterpiece that is Kung Fury, Mike behaves himself surprisingly well, Brandon gets lucky, and Molly and Komal save the bees.
I apologize to my mother for all the cuss words and inappropriate jargon. I didn't get to edit this episode so double sorry if there are some really explicit stuff in here.
The gang has one of their best shows ever - mainly because I talk a lot. We discuss participation trophies, the x-men, and turning your weaknesses into superpowers. Komal gets muted several times for not following the rules, Mike thinks The New Girl is the greatest show ever made, Jason beefs on people bringing their 7-year olds to R-rated movies, and Molly tells a story about how she makes children cry.
In this episode of Nanobrew, it's a five against one battle royale as Jason compares college diplomas to participation trophies (I have the grade inflation data to back that up, btw). Brandon tells another tall tale about meeting Gordon Ramsay, Jason beefs on Komal walking in traffic without looking both ways, Mike recounts the time someone in Tennessee once tried to sell him children, and Komal tells us that her 90-year old grandpa is a big fan of the podcast. Shout out Komal's grandpa!
As always, we're rated earmuffs for explicit language. We say bad words. Sorry, mom.
Sorry this episode is a little late, there was an upload error.
The gang welcomes Director of Franchise Sales Komal and COO Molly to the podcast and they prove to be just as foul-mouthed as the rest of the group. The NanoTip today revolves around why it's important to sacrifice momentary discomfort for long-term gain. In other words, the reason most people don't see improvement in their co-workers is because they don't take the time to call them out on their shit.
James from Kitto Insurance stops by the podcast to join in on the normal small businesses shenanigans. Jason talks about Lady Bird and how no one ever changes and never will, Bryan threatens to blow up the brewery, Mike beefs on olives and mumbles a lot, and Brandon didn’t contribute much because he’s still made we don’t believe his story that Creed sent him to Space Camp in 8th grade.
I didn't have time to edit out much in the second half of the show so in case we said something really naughty, I apologize profusely to my mother.
I'm trying out trolling SEO with my title and subtitle. Did it work?
If it did, you've accidentally stumbled upon small business shenanigans without much of a direction. In this episode, Jason's Nano Tip involves social media marketing, Mike professes his love for Natalie Portman, Bryan is easily angered during Stump the Brewer, Brandon told another bullshit story that nobody believes.
As always, I apologize to my mother for knowing these people.
Brandon's Tall Tale of the Week is about how Scott Stahp of Creed paid for him to go to space camp (and tries to claim he knows Marc Summers), Jason's Nano Tip is how to be the perfect employee, Mike gets a bump on the head and suddenly can speak fluent Spanish, and Bryan talks about the nude pictures he sends to Mike.
I apologize to my mother for employing these terrible humans.
