In this episode TFJ dives into some modern applications of the big lie by those motivated by financial considerations. In these instances - perpetrated in our very own times - there is also a body count.
The risks of smoking are now well known, and the damaging effects of cigarettes on human health are indisputable. But before the cat was burst out of the bag, the tobacco industry perpetuated a campaign of misinformation on the American public concerning the safety of tobacco products.
Now that traditional tobacco use has declined, deception is being employed to rope impressionable youth into vaping or e-cigarettes, touting that e-cigarettes are a considerably safer alternative to traditional tobacco and even a method to quit the habit of smoking altogether.
Disaster misinformation is another example - this time for political purposes — of how a big lie can deny the truth at the precise moment people need accurate information in order to survive.
One must be aware that social media is not optimized for truth, and it can - and often is - a medium for lethal and viral misinformation.
Because the liar incarcerates himself in a prison of his own making; it is critical to disassociate - to "stay far away," as the Bible refers to dishonesty, before there will be a need for more lies to sustain the illusion, and become irrevocably entrapped in moral erosion.

Nasser's threats resulted in elation throughout the Arab world, as mass demonstrations erupted in acclaim of Egypt's action to provoke war. The armed forces of Lebanon, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia were activated, as Iraqi armored columns advanced towards the Syrian and Jordanian borders to participate in a battle of honor.

In 1964, Israel completed its National Water Carrier, leading the Arab states to worry about the economic growth this would mean for Israel. They understood that water meant agriculture, agriculture meant food security, food security meant Israel could absorb more immigrants, more immigrants meant a larger population, and a larger population meant a stronger army and a state that would be more difficult to dislodge. Syria tried to divert the waters of the Chazbani and Banias rivers away from Israel, but in successive skirmishes Israeli tank crews wreaked havoc on Syrian bulldozers earthmoving equipment and tanks. Eventually, Syria and the other Arab states abandoned the diversion effort. On January 1, 1965 was the first terrorist incursion of a new organization called the PLO. This marked the emergence of a new model of Palestinian nationalism—one that would place armed struggle at its core and would, over time, come to dominate the Palestinian national movement.

Hitler's Big Lie found fresh expression with Hamas supporters claiming the absurdity that Israel is perpetrating genocide in its right to defend itself, executed in a legal and humane way. An accusation launched by none other than an organization that has in its charter and all of its rhetoric the desire to destroy Israel and every Jew living therein.
In this episode we explore how Hitler and the Nazi propaganda machine utilized the "big lie" with incredible effectiveness.
Whereas the virtuous woman is extolled for being an individual that may always be trusted, we conclude with a chilling story highlighting that the word of honor of one not committed to truth, is a mockery of honor.

In a PS to our coverage of the Eichmann Trial we elaborate about the testimony of Dr. Foldi's description of the last time he saw his daughter in a red coat who was separated from him upon their arrival at Auschwitz. Ever since, "the girl in the red coat" a nameless, faceless child became a representative , a composite metaphor for the millions of children who perished in the Holocaust. She was artistically portrayed In Spielberg's Schindler's List. Another outcome of Holocaust awareness, but far from the eyes of the public, Ben Gurion realized how vulnerable the Jewish People are. Given the vagaries of world history he did not wish to be exclusively dependent on the West, and decided that Israel needed to become a nuclear power. How tiny impoverished Israel pulled this off, is one more chapter in the wonders of Israel. Most of the Israel's south — the Negev Desert — was barren and uninhabitable. New immigrants were streaming into the country and every drop of water was spoken for. Israel wasn't just building a state — it was racing against thirst. Solving this problem would require innovation like the world had never seen, and something Israel's Arab neighbors could not tolerate.

Aside from demonstrating that Israel felt responsible for the entire Jewish People, and accordingly would bring a mass-murderer to trial for an act that had been perpetuated before the State was formed, and not on its turf, extracting him from a third country half a world away, Israel's prime minister had an educational agenda that would be accomplished through the trial.
Israel's youth had never encountered the Holocaust and were appallingly ignorant and derisive about the subject. How could Jews be so passive about their own deaths, they wondered, and they treated survivors with scorn instead of with the respect and sympathy that they deserved.
The Eichmann trial changed all of this as the entire country listed in rapt attention as 110 witnesses took the stand and explained in meticulous detail what the Nazis perpetrated and what they had suffered. As Israel's lead prosecutor said in his opening statement that he does not stand alone, with him are six million accusers.
The trial was well-received around the world as an embodiment of historical justice, although it surprisingly also revealed the banality of evil.

The Talmud teaches that God's seal is truth; lying displays that you care more what your fellow man thinks than what the Lord thinks of you. A half a truth is a whole lie and partial truths should not be rationalized or legitimized. One of the attributes of The Valorous Woman that Solomon extolls is "the heart of her husband trusts in her." Trust can only be earned by being a consistently honest person, whose word is constantly reliable, and admits when they make a mistake. Everyone knows that lies travel at a faster velocity than the truth; and this was even before the digital age. Thanks to the internet and social media, a lie is far more powerful than ever previously conceived. Hitler outlined his plan for ruling Germany in his manifesto ,Mein Kampf. A key component to taking power was the implementation of the "Big Lie," explained at length in our forthcoming character episode p"G (Season Six, Episode 7).

In a daring and bold action, Israel's Mossad captured Adolph Eichmann, the man most responsible for the Nazi genocide of European Jewry. How the Mossad managed to locate Eichmann in the Nazi haven of Argentina and secret him out undetected is described in detail in this episode. Israel's lighting campaign in the Sinai in 1956 resulted in a routing of the Egyptian forces and capture of the entire Sinai Peninsula in less than 100 hours. The threat of Egypt deploying its brand-new military hardware from the Soviet Union had been averted. But in a fluke of history, President Eisenhower, instead of siding with his natural allies, Britain, France and Israel, sided with the Soviet Union and Nasser's Egypt and demanded immediate Israeli withdrawal in return for nothing – or else!
Eventually Israel received guarantees of right of passage through the Staits of Tiran and that the United Nations Expeditionary Force would be stationed in Gaza to prevent the penetration of Fedayeen terrorists into Israel. Israel's case against the unaccommodating Eisenhower administration, most notably Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, was assisted by Lyndon Johnson, Democratic leader in the Senate, and members of the press and Congress who were friends of Israel.
The United States was employing a painful double standard by not doing anything as Hungarian protestors demanded freedom from Soviet oppression, and were murdered wholesale for their dissidence; yet the United States demanded with the threat of immediate sanctions, that Israel, which had gone to war for legitimate grievances, immediately withdraw from the entire Sinai.
Israel gained from the battle a decade of quiet which was so necessary to build the State, and in the process demonstrated that the Middle East had a new military power.

The Israeli paratrooper drop at the Mitla Pass wasn't only military, it was also diplomatic theater. By landing troops near the Suez Canal, Israel created the pretext that the British and French desperately needed to enter the war. Regardless, however, of the diplomatic component, Israel now had to open a supply line across the enormous desert floor to reinforce the paratroopers at Mitla, deep inside enemy territory. This would entail another group of paratroopers led by the fearless young commander Ariel Sharon, to fight their way through three Egyptian fortified positions to reach the Mitla Pass. One Egyptian fortress was the highly garrisoned Abu Ageila. Israeli armor and infantry struck this position and Egyptian forces fought back with unexpected tenacity. In one tank engagement, every single Israeli tank was hit! Against the odds, Israel routed the Egyptians by implementing speed, surprise, improvisation and a willingness to take risks that Egypt would never dare. Credits:

Way back in Season One (episode 28 – really worth listening to!) famous lecturer and New York Times best-selling author, Rabbi Joseph Telushkin came on the show to explain "moral imagination." When the opportunity arose, I sat him down to get another vital installment concerning what should be a critical component of our character.

We are then taken to the Jewish community of New York City in 1895, fearful of the backlash from the visit of a prominent antisemite, and how the clever police commissioner, Teddy Roosevelt came to the rescue. The episode concludes with the moving portrayal of (remarkably unknown) Holocaust hero, Roddy Edmonds, and how his story was posthumously revealed.

The military operation to capture the Sinai Peninsula faced several substantial obstacles. First, there was the terrain itself, the Sinai Peninsula was 24,000 square miles of pure desolation. The desert consisted of rolling sand dunes in the north that could swallow vehicles and exhaust troops within hours. In the south were the nearly impassable mountain ranges which created natural fortresses. The second obstacle was the Egyptian military with 100,000 troops, freshly armed with the latest Soviet equipment. Against this the IDF Chief of Staff, Moshe Dayan, was betting on surprise, speed, and the psychological impact of audacity. Egypt purchased state of the art weaponry from the Soviet Union that obliterated any balance of power between Israel and her Arab adversaries. Egypt would have the armament, it already had the desire, to wipe out Israel. Israel naturally turned to its trusted ally, the United States, but the days of Harry Truman were over. The new President, Dwight Eisenhower, together with his State Department which has traditionally been slanted against Israel, saw wisdom in aligning with the far more numerous Arabs. Israel desperately needed a friend that manufactured weapons, and that ally turned out to be France. France's primary motivation was the principle that the enemy of your enemy is your friend. FLN freedom fighters in Algeria were seeking freedom from France and they were armed and trained by Egypt. When Nasser nationalizes the Suez Canal and expels western managers, Britain and France know that they must act and their unlikely partner is Israel.

After Israel's stunning and unpredictable victory (especially from the Arab perspective) in the War of Independence, there was a colossus of bruised pride in the Arab World. To answer the heretofore imponderable, "How could Israel have been victorious?" a narrative emerged, "We did not lose because Israel was strong, but rather because our leaders were weak." The search began for strong military men who could restore Arab dignity, and the undisputed rising star was Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt. Nasser was a pan-Arabist who maintained that Arabs were born for greatness and should have had one of the most enduring empires, had they not been victims of colonialism. A Soviet shift in the 1950s pushed them from allies of Israel to adversaries. President Eisenhower, with the very strong support of his Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles, decided to be stronger aligned with the Arab side in the conflict.

As already explained in an earlier episode (Season Five Episode 6) the Fedayeen terrorist raiders would sneak into Israel, murder, sabotage, set fire, steal, and slip back across the border to Egypt and Jordan. This was death by a thousand cuts to Israel.
And then things deteriorated precipitously when in September of 1955, Nasser announced that Egypt has signed a massive arms deal with Czechoslovakia (read: Russia) which will give Egypt an enormous military edge over Israel and enable the Fedayeen to be backed by tank brigades.
Nasser openly states that he intends to destroy Israel and he will soon have the weaponry to enable this. Israel is running out of time. And just then Nasser nationalizes the Suez Canal, antagonizing and threatening the British and the French. A surreptitious international pact is formed to undercut Nasser, which will come to be known as the Sinai Campaign of 1956.

Rabbi Aharon Zulberg, and the other people he credits, was still scratching his head as to what significant thing South African Jewry might do on behalf of their brethren affected by the war. His synagogue, “The Bais” teamed up with the Jewish National Fund of South Africa to offer respite for hostages released from the terror tunnels of Gaza and in urgent need of relaxation and tranquility. What better place could there be than the beautiful country of South Africa and an initiative was launched uniting Jews, and in the process learning about the inestimable good there is in people.

Rabbi Aharon Zulberg from Johannesburg, South Africa, like so many other Jews worldwide (and other very fine people, think of Dr. Julie Snyder from Beaufort, SC who jumped into action when she heard that knee pads were needed for soldiers – featured in our podcast “An Outpouring of Kindness” at the time the October 7 War broke out) wish to contribute to those affected by the war in Israel.
Rabbi Zulberg is a pragmatist and he realized that South African Jewry, with a weak currency could not compete with North American and European communities. Still, he and so many others wished to help and do something, so a collection of items to be sent to those most-impacted in Israel was assembled and dispatched. But this was just the catalytic enzyme of what would become a project totally unique to South Africa.

The assault on Jews in college campuses and even in front of synagogues mandates a firm reaction, especially in light of the fact that the government national and local has been quick to condemn, but has offered no other relief. Some bright Jewish minds have rallied on behalf of those under threat, relying primarily on title six of the Civil rights Act of 1964. So far these suits have not borne a huge harvest. Rabbi Dr. Moshe Goldfeder of the National Jewish Advocacy Center – and so much more – explains in this episode how he has expanded the tool box of ways to effectively protect Jews on and off campus.

Rabbi Mark Goldfeder is a rising meteor on the world scene because of his personal academic and legal achievements and the work that he has done - initially checking - and at this point defeating antisemitic initiatives. He is also the founder and director of National Jewish Advocacy Center.
The rise in antisemitic incidents has become an urgent crisis, which requires a bold new approach. The NJAC has instituted litigation that holds individuals, institutions and corporations accountable when they cross the line from free expression into illegal, harmful actions whereby antisemitic violators face severe financial consequences. In the first of two interviews Rabbi Goldfeder explains what he is doing and what can be done to defeat the scourge of antisemitism and anti-Israel advocacy.

Israel’s Arab neighbors were also her declared enemy. Accordingly, they had no interest in respecting a border regarding which they had signed an armistice. Infiltrators, that were called fedayeem would sneak into Israel to tend unmanned farmland, to loot border villages, or to carry out violent and often deadly attacks and then return across the border where they would be commended rather than condemned for the mayhem and murder which they had committed. In the early 1950s there were thousands of attacks each year resulting in the murder of several hundred Israelis.
Something had to be done, resulting in the IDF forming Special Forces Unit 101. After the murder of Susan Kanias and two of her children in a fedayeem raid in 1953, Unit 101 carried out their first reprisal in the West Bank village of Qibya. Overnight everyone learned that the rules of engagement had radically changed.

A vast program of public works was initiated by the Israeli Government to provide employment opportunities for the refugee immigrants who were mainly unskilled. Likewise, the Jewish National Fund embarked upon a nationwide forestation project that totally transformed the landscape of the country.
After figuring out how to absorb the greatest number of immigrants the world has known, Prime Minister Ben Gurion had to deal with other burning issues such as how to deal with the deeply religious residents of Israel referred to as “Haredim.”
Critical attention also had to be devoted how to secure Israel’s borders when each neighboring country was hostile and sought Israel’s destruction. This resulted in the Army Reserves for every able-bodied soldier.

In 1950 the Israeli Parliament passed a dramatic and symbolic law known as The Law of Return. This would finally bring an end to the description of “The Wandering Jew.” The Law also brought a formal end to the execrable White Paper of 1939 (by the British Government) and a symbolic overturning of the Nuremberg Laws which the Nazis employed to determine who was Jewish. The Law of Return employed the same (non-halachic) status: if you were Jewish-enough to be condemned to death by the Nazis, then you were Jewish enough to be deserving of the protection of the State of Israel.
Jewish refugees from Arab countries had to flee for their lives (and not everyone was so fortunate) to the State of Israel, resulting in the arrival of 850,000 desperate refugees.
Israel cared for her brethren and saw to it that they would not be referred to or be looked upon as refugees. And yet, the primitive conditions in which they were originally housed in transit camps or ma’abarot was appalling.

When the second truce in Israel’s War of Independence went into effect on July 18, 1948, Israel was militarily in a far better position than it had been at the outbreak of the War. Still, work was still very much cut out for the nascent IDF as Egyptian forces had pressed so deep into the Negev that they were able to menace the key artery linking Tel Aviv to the southern towns and Jewish settlements. Israel’s innovative, young commander of the Negev campaign was Yigal Allon. In order to break the Egyptian hold, he would have to get his troops to the south undetected.
Allon’s soldiers discovered an ancient route built by the Romans 2000 years earlier, known as the Ruheiba Trail. The Egyptians logically expected an Israeli assault from the conventional route and were totally unprepared for an enemy that materialized out of nowhere from a trail that was concealed and provided natural cover.

After the first truce was called in Israel’s War of Independence, the United States and Britain, acting through the United Nations, wished to secure a lasting peace in the region. The United Nations mediator was Count Foke Bernadotte, who unabashedly viewed himself as a soon-to-be Nobel Prize laureate and assumed many liberties that succeeded in making himself extremely unpopular to both sides of the conflict.
Bernadotte’s scheme for achieving regional peace entailed amputating the Negev region from Israel and limiting Jewish immigration. With pressure mounting upon Israel to make concessions that it could not afford, the prudent option Ben Gurion concluded was to take the Negev by force. Young and brilliant commander Yigal Allon was responsible for this campaign and employed some innovative techniques that would become the hallmark of Israeli military strategy.

UNRWA was originally a small agency mandated to provide basic humanitarian relief for Palestinians, including a vote for renewal every three years. Seventy-five years and four generations later, it has mushroomed to having more than 30,000 employees and an annual budget of substantially more than $1 billion, it has unjustifiably become one of the largest UN agencies. Revelations from the War in Gaza have also revealed that it has become a major resource for the Hamas terrorists with its employees assisting and participating in terrorist acts and crimes against humanity.

Professor Alan Dershowitz writes that the controversial battle in the Deir Yassin suburb of Jerusalem in 1948, “Stands out in the history of Arab-Jewish conflict in Palestine precisely because it was so unusual and out of character of the Jews.” Arab armies massacred Jewish civilians avoiding any Jewish refugee problem. Israel’s War for Independence resulted in three distinct refugee problems. The largest group of refugees were Jews who were forced out of their homes and threatened with severe violence and pogroms in the Arab and North African lands where they had lived for centuries. They received haven in Israel where they were welcomed by their brethren and were never referred to as “Refugees.” The Arabs did not welcome their refugee brethren and shunted them in refugee camps – where they have remained ever since.

In the dialogues of today categories must be delineated so that they conform with: Critical Theory, Intersectionality and Identity Politics. Britain was in favor of soliciting its Arab neighbors at Israel’s expense. However, the economic realities of strapped Britain at the end of WW II ensured that she could not aggravate the United States. Hence Britain had no recourse but to comply with the arms embargo to the Middle-East. The UN imposed a cease fire early in the War of Independence and Count Bernadotte was responsible for overseeing it. Bernadotte earned a lot of Israeli ire for the liberties he intended to impose including not recognizing the UN vote on November 29, 1947 which was the prelude to Israel’s statehood. His bold, biased positions resulted in his assassination and he was succeeded by Dr. Ralph Bunche. The vital support of the Soviet Union towards Israel’s creation is an unknown chapter in Israeli history. Consequentially, too much credit is awarded to America who did nothing more in the critical first years than vote for her statehood and recognize its independence. Stalin was the most unlikely of Israel supporters, yet as it says in Proverbs, “The heart of the king is in the hand of the Lord.” In classic Orwellian style the Soviets would erase this period of their foreign policy, but Russian Jewry had already been energized about leaving their oppressive Communist birthplace for Israel.

This is an excellent question and a full-fledged mystery that will not be fully answered in this episode. Teller From Jerusalem continues to explore the various steps that occurred in the evolution of the Soviet support for nascent Israel. It was beneficial to Israel that the Soviets arrested the work of Count Folke Bernadotte, the Swedish aristocrat that was appointed by the United Nations Secretary General to hammer out a temporary truce between Israel and her neighbors. Bernadotte sought to achieve far more than just a temporary truce. He foisted terms upon Israel, when she was already winning the war, which would have deprived her of much of what she had achieved at the very greatest sacrifice. This was going to cost him his life at the hands of Israel’s underground and embroil Israel in international censure resulting in Ben Gurion declaring war upon any defense force that was not part of the Haganah.

One’s first association of the IDF is that of a mighty army that secures Israel’s borders and simultaneously prevents an Iranian hegemonic caliphate in the Middle East. But the IDF is very much also the platform and the wherewithal to enable Israelis – of every background – to live the Israeli dream.
The IDF presents an incredible educational opportunity for those who have been deprived of a high school education, or received weak schooling. The first priority for the scholarships are for minorities: Arabs, Druze or Christians. But even those who do not participate in the IDFs continuing education programs, are very much involved in a broader educational project that is the essence of the IDF. During their years of service, young men and women will transform from selfish takers absorbed with their phones, into mature, responsible adults who blossom into givers that are committed to each other for life.

The IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) has spread its tentacles all over the earth. Their greatest resource is the Hezbollah in Lebanon who probably possess 2000 precision guided missiles. These missiles have the capability of taking out Israel’s most valuable assets within 14 inches of accuracy.
Because of the existential threat that Hezbollah poses, when Israel called up its reservists after the October 7th attack, two thirds of them were sent to the North where 100,000 civilians have been evacuated to be out of direct Hezbollah range. Israel had a cadre of talented leaders. Israel also enjoyed the support of world Jewry resulting in sorely needed funds and volunteers that formed the beginning of the Israeli Air Force.
The least likely of allies was the Soviet Union, which was and would return to being fiercely anti-Zionist, but at this critical period backed Israel and allowed its satellite Czechoslovakia to supply Israel with arms. King Abdul of Jordan, pragmatically realized that Israel was here to stay and would have preferred dealing with the Israelis over the likes of Haj Amin al-Husseini.

Despite the embargo on armaments to Israel, the Israelis figured out daring ways to smuggle in weapons. The arrival of these munitions enabled the Hagana to attempt to break the stranglehold on Jerusalem. The all important site overlooking the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway was Kastel and the Arabs under the command of their most dynamic leader, Abdel Kader al-Husseini, drove the Jews out. But not before a Hagana gunner eliminated Husseini, seriously crippling Arab leadership.
Abdel Kader al-Husseini’s cousin was the Nazi mufti of Jerusalem, accurately portrayed in TFJ Season I episode 33. Haj Amin al-Husseini spared no efforts to exterminate the Jews in Israel and elsewhere, inflaming Arab passions with the fiction that the Jews were taking over Al Aksa. This false rumor invariably led to pogroms, mass murder, mayhem, looting and destruction. The family tradition was carried on with the Mufti’s nephew, arch terrorist, Yasser Arafat. Their lies, incitement and methodology continue with Hamas today.

The Young Israel of West Hempstead burgeoned to a community of 750 families under the dynamic leadership of Rabbi Yehuda Kelemer of blessed memory. Referred to as the “Rabbi’s Rabbi,” this title does no justice to the overwhelming impact that he had upon anyone he encountered. It wasn’t charisma, and it certainly wasn’t hip coolness; it was the rarest blend of mastery of every facet of Torah, exquisite sensitivity, and how a God-fearing individual must consistently conduct themselves.
Anyone who required assistance, whether it was requested or not (usually the latter) was blessed by Rabbi Kelemer taking them under his wing, making them feel honorable and important. The Rabbi had a very liberal ‑ nigh incomprehensible ‑ interpretation of assistance. With never a thought for his personal comfort or dignity, no obstacle could prevent his treasured and cherished uplifting intervention.
Because of his Torah scholarship recognized by the world’s most prominent roshei yeshivah, dynamic leadership, and extraordinary care for everyone, the Young Israel of West Hempstead where he was the Mara D’asra swelled to a membership of 750 families. Young and old, disaffected youth, ardent secularists and yeshivah graduates revered Rabbi Kelemer and lovingly heeded his counsel.

As we noted in our previous episode, a spirit of volunteerism and unity has swept Israel. Everyone seems to be joining the war effort in their own modest way, and the result is enterprising ingenuity marshalled in a scope that is hard to comprehend and beautiful to behold. The murderous and barbaric Hamas attack exacted a very heavy price, but in its aftermath the people of Israel have united and put aside their long-standing differences. There are those from around the world – even cowboys – who are also showing their solidarity.
Consequential to the Hammas barbaric attack on October 7, 2023, the residents of Israel have locked arms in a sincere display of unity and determination to support each fellow countryman. The amazing acts of generosity, altruism, volunteerism and philanthropy are unprecedented on the world stage. Differences that had ripped the country apart prior to the Hammas attack, are nearly forgotten, as Israelis have soberly realized that they face an existential threat and everyone must join in this battle with unity of purpose, together.
Part of this episode is a ten-minute interview conducted on the Michael Medved Show exploring the unprecedented acts of solidarity and magnanimity that have overtaken Israel.
Teller From Jerusalem has culled the trenchant interviews and clips to provide a perspective and understanding of what has transpired since the outbreak of the Hamas terrorist incursion. The news is appalling, but the reaction of Israel and of Israel’s friends is heartening and emboldening. Our second installment on how to avoid shaming others takes note that the desire to humiliate adversaries is particularly common in politics. Just because someone is competing with you for the same seat, gives no right to violate privacy and humiliate. Many other key rules are discussed and the children’s ditty, “Sticks and Stones may Break my Bones, but Words will Never Hurt me” is dismissed as incorrect. Lastly, caution is issued over the damage that can be so readily and devastatingly achieved via social media and online with opportunities to attack anonymously and with an absence of gatekeepers.
Israel’s Law of Return was designed to solve the problem of persecuted Jews who had nowhere to flee, for no country would allow them entry. They would all be welcomed in Israel. Israel did not just open her doors, but actively took part in dangerous rescue missions to bring entire populations to Israel where they could be resettled in safety. One of the most famous missions was Operation Magic Carpet which, in the span of one year, clandestinely airlifted nearly 50,000 Jews from Yemen, where they were suffering attacks and lived in constant danger.
Transporting Yemen Jewry to one central place where they could be extracted, required the impoverished people to trek at least 300 kilometers by foot through deserts and mountains as they were attacked along the way and suffered from hunger and disease. A motley group of young air force veterans from WWII, piloted transport planes, licensed to carry no more than 60 people, with 600 passengers on board. The entire flight from southern Yemen to Israel was fraught with danger, flying above Arab territory and always with a need to refuel along this hostile route. Conducted in total secrecy, a miracle was achieved without the loss of a single loss of life on these exceptionally perilous flights.
The British Mandatory government enforced a ban not only on Jews entering the country, but also on Jews acquiring weapons or manufacturing arms under the penalty of death.
Where was Israel to acquire weapons to defend herself? There were risky efforts to smuggle in weaponry and clandestine production in Israel. But the production that was done locally was neither the volume nor the dimension that Israel required. But Jewish innovation which was the hallmark of the War of Independence met this challenge as well.
The Partition Plan of November 1947 has a glaring error insofar as that it never occurred; and there never was a partition between a Jewish and an Arab country. The significance of the Partition Plan was that it delineated a point from which both sides could begin their struggle. For the Zionists it was never more than a starting point as no one believed that it was the ending point for the map according to the Partition Plan was unrealistic and absurd. From the Arab position the Partition Plan was not even a starting point, but rather a non-starter.
The Arabs had pledged that they would rid the land from the Jews, and the chiefs of staff of the Arab neighbors plus army contingents from Iraq and Saudi Arabia that do not even border Israel, met to devise a strategy how to annihilate the Jewish menace. Proof that as Weizmann had spoken and Alterman had composed into poetry, Israel was not going to be delivered on a “silver platter.”
Teller From Jerusalem was horrified when a Google search for “public humiliation” rendered clips and even websites devoted to shaming others. The actual evil of public shaming has scant representation – even in an age where social media has made the humiliation of others instantaneous and ubiquitous.
The first of our installments on this subject will focus upon how to avoid shaming others. In our discussion regarding revealing the former criminal behavior of someone who is now leading an ethical, law-abiding life, we will tangentially explore some recent literature of two who were rehabilitated and told their stories.
The UN was about to vote on partition and surprisingly the Soviet Union supported it as did the US (The United States means President Truman, the State Department was opposed). The world was shocked by the sudden Soviet support of the partition plan affording a home for the Jews, for this contravened all of Stalin policy heretofore. Although Israel was not yet ready to defend itself militarily against its Arab enemies, the constellation of countries willing to support the partition vote would never repeat itself. It was a “now or never” situation for Israel and she rallied all of her influence and contacts behind mustering the 2/3 majority required. (By error, I referred in the recording to Andrei Gromyko as Alexei Kosygin, his colleague in the Politburo.)

An academic scholar (attending both Oxford and Harvard Universities) playwright extraordinaire, and blessed with an outstanding sense of humor which has made him beloved and adored in all of his postings. Ambassador Taub marshals his encyclopedic knowledge and treasure trove of anecdotes to enlighten and edify regarding one of the most seminal events in the ultimate establishment of the State of Israel.
Even after the conclusion of WWII Zionist fulfillment faced enormous hurdles. They British had every intention of maintaining the same blockade of Jews to Palestine which they enforced during the war denying the Jews haven that would have saved their lives. Jewish lives was simply not as important as antagonizing the Arab world and threatening the importation of oil to Britain. And if illegal immigrants managed to sneak in, the British would capture and deport them. The Patria was crammed with 1800 Jewish refugees that were to be deported from the port of Haifa to Mauritius when a bomb placed aboard caused the ship to instantly sink.
A considerate individual thinks about the needs of others and recognizes that they are greater than your own needs or conveniences. Primarily, it means not living with a “me-first” approach. On this episode we shall explore consideration regarding driving, being punctual and not wasting other people’s time. We will also discuss the rabbinic concept of “say a little, but do a lot” and not raising other people’s expectations, only to disappoint them in the end. Good manners also govern how we should refrain from conduct that will annoy others, and how to properly compliment a fellow person.
Israel’s War of Independence resulted in three distinct refugee problems: 70,000 Israelis that were displaced from their homes and villages because of the war, 700,000 Arabs that fled Israel because of the war, and over 800,000 Jewish refugees from Arab lands that had to flee for their lives. Teller From Jerusalem filters between the truth and the propaganda concerning the misery and suffering of those disposed. It is very telling how Israel and her neighbors reacted to the refugees of their respective peoples. Were they embraced as brethren or manipulated to become a political opportunity and ultimately a time bomb.
TFJ Season 2 Episode 21 Foreign Volunteers, The Battle for Lod and the Displacement of Non-Combatants
Foreign volunteers were critical to Israel’s victory in the War of Independence. Israel’s fledgling air force was made up of Jewish English speaking pilots, veterans of WWII. It became clear that the only way that Israel could persevere through the difficult beginning of the War of Independence would be if she would seize the initiative and Plan Danny was launched. Part of this operation was to capture Lod (Lydda) which was an Arab stronghold. In the fighting tens of thousands of Arabs either fled their homes or were instructed by their leaders to leave with the assurance that they would return with victorious Arab armies.
TFJ Season 2 Episode 20
With the rise of Jewish immigration to Palestine in the 1930s the Arabs lodged their protest with violence, attacks, murder and mayhem that became known as the Arab Revolt (1936-1939). In response to the revolt, famous appeaser Neville Chamberlin, far more interested in Arab oil than the plight of millions of desperate Jews whose lives were in imminent danger, issued The White Paper of 1939. This entailed a severe limitation of Jewish immigration to Palestine. Despite the fact that the White Paper stated that the future of Jewish immigration would be determined by the Arab majority and limited if not curtailed the ability of Jews to buy land, it was still rejected by Palestine Arabs led by Haj Amin al-Husseini. With the number of Jewish refugees in Europe at catastrophic dimensions consequential to the Nazi rise to power in Germany and in Austria, the Évian Conference was convened to ease their plight. The conference was a fiasco never intending to be of any help, and in fact, gravely worsened their condition.
Gratitude should not be short-term. Ideally one should feel and express gratitude for favors done to family members and the community, yet minimize the favors that you have done for others. Otherwise, you may walk around in a constant state of annoyance for not being recognized for the good that you have performed. Gratitude is the most important component to achieve happiness, but even gratitude cannot help if happiness is confused with pleasure. There are many who believe that the pursuit of pleasure is the goal of life and will sacrifice their lives in the process.

Ben Gurion ordered that Latrun be taken, but Israel had neither the manpower nor the weaponry to launch a successful assault and each of its attacks were futile and very costly. A shepherd path was accidentally discovered beyond the view of the Arab gunners, and hundreds of Israeli volunteers worked around the clock to convert this winding path strewn with rocks and pits into a viable road for trucks to bring desperately needed supplies to Jerusalem. The miraculous road, discovered and created so providentially, was named the Burma Road because of its similarity of circumstances to the road built by the Allies during world War II connecting Burma to Southwest China to avert the Japanese sea blockade. This episode has been enhanced by the excellent “History of Israel Explained/Unpacked” series.

At the beginning of the War of Independence Israel was vastly outnumbered and did not had sufficient weapons to defend herself. In those initial weeks before weapons began to arrive, primarily form Czechoslovakia, it was only the daring and ingenuity of lone Israeli soldiers coupled with industrial helpings of Divine Providence that enabled Israel to hold on. Ron Feller is one such hero who single-handedly took on and defeated an entire Egyptian mechanized platoon. Swedish diplomat Count Folk Bernadotte was chosen to be the United Nations Security Council mediator in Israel’s War of Independence. Bernadotte labored to turn the cease-fire into a binding peace treaty which he figured would earn him a Nobel Peace Prize. It certainly earned him disdain.
- In TFJ’s first installment on gratitude, the correlation between gratitude and happiness is explored. Although goals are critically important, expectations are a recipe for misery. Furthermore, the less you expect the more grateful you will be, and the more you expect the less grateful you will be. Counting your blessings is not merely a phrase, but a mantra for a grateful person. It is the only way to avoid the all-too common appreciating what you have, only when it is taken away.

The Hagana, which will become the Israel Defense Forces, mobilized any able-bodied man or woman and this amounted to barely 30,000. The Arabs had significant manpower and far greater firepower and air forces. The Jews had nothing comparable. Lacking defense in depth the Jews could not afford to give ground on any of their four fronts.
But now that the British mandate was over, the Jews were able to import weapons that had previously been forbidden. The greatest Jewish resource was the dedication of their troops, and the talent of their leaders. If Israel was to hang on, she would have to survive the first two weeks.
Declaring independence was a daring move, for Israel knew that the very declaration was an invitation to immediate war against five organized armies. Ben Gurion understood that it was now or never.
Israel’s Declaration of Independence assured that Israel would be open for Jewish immigration, and for the ingathering of the exiles. It would foster the development of the country for the benefit of all inhabitants. It would be based upon freedom, justice and peace as envisaged by the prophets of Israel. It would ensure complete equality of social, religious and political rights to all of its inhabitants. TFJ also looks at the mystery and tension regarding the name that would be awarded to the new country.

Following the UN vote for partition in November 1947, the British informed that they would not carry out on the policy voted on by the General Assembly, and they would remain in Palestine until May 1948. The British would no longer intervene in any fighting between Arabs and Jews, but they would still steadfastly enforce the ban on weapons for Jews.
The Hagana was planning its attack to liberate Jewish residents under siege in Jerusalem. The road leading to Jerusalem was subject to sniper fire from Arab terrorist. The Irgun and Lechi wished to assist their brethren in Jerusalem and attacked the village of Deir Yassin and encountered fiercer resistance than expected. Pinned down, the fighters tossed hand grenades resulting in civilian losses.

Series 2 Episode 9
There was no secure area in the section of the land allocated to the Jews where the Israelis had a geographic and demographic advantage. The embargo of weapons to Palestine made it difficult for the Haganah to arm its troops while the Arab armies had resources in Syria, Jordan and Egypt. Because of the fragility of the situation, and fear that the United States and other countries would not recognize the new Jewish state, Ben Gurion made a gutsy decision.
It was time for the Jews to go on the offensive and start capturing Arab towns, and mixed neighborhoods. This would be the first time that the Haganah operated not in a non-defensive capacity.
The Arabs managed to cut off Jerusalem from other Jewish areas leaving the city’s 100,000 Jewish residents stranded in a chokehold. It was time to risk everything to liberate the city and at that crucial moment arms arrived for the Jewish fighters.

It is unlikely that had FDR been the president that he would have recognized Israel. Truman was the first to recognize the Jewish State 11 minutes after her independence had been declared. There are two primary reasons as to why Truman contradicted his State department on this thorny issue, but there is no dispute that were it not for quick-witted and loyal Eddie Jacobson, it would not have happened.

Series 2: Episode 6
The Relief Column sent to the Etzion Block were buried in a hasty, shallow grave. When Israel liberated the Etzion area in the Six Day War the remains were brought to Jerusalem and miraculously identified.
As the first stage of the War of Independence was not going well for Israel, there was fear that the United States would renege on its commitment to recognize the Jewish state upon the British withdrawal in May 1948. Harry Truman was not interested in listening to anyone regarding the Palestine question, until his old friend Eddie Jacobson opened up the door for Chaim Weizmann to speak with the president.

Series 2 Episode 5
The Partition Plan which would have enabled the creation of a Jewish State was not looking promising. The American State Department was adamantly opposed, dampening President Truman’s support. The Soviet’s were in favor of partition, which presented a rare opportunity as with the Soviets came their satellite countries. It would take Dr. Chaim Weizmann with all of his wisdom and charm to convince President Truman to vote for partition and put the United States’ weight behind it.
After the motion for Jewish statehood passed in the UN, there was rejoicing in Israel and in Jewish communities throughout the world. The Arab reaction was a wave of lethal violence. The Yishuv began making hasty preparations for war. The Etzion Block in the Hebron hills south of Jerusalem was besieged by Arab guerrillas. A relief column of 35 of Hebrew University’s brightest students never made it to their comrades and were killed and mutilated by Khader el Husseini’s soldiers.

TFJ Series 2: Episode 3
The British convened conferences to quell the Arab revolt and seek a lasting solution between the Arabs and the Jews. But unless the Arabs received everything they demanded, they were unwilling to negotiate. This created a pattern that was still being followed over sixty years later to the frustration of President Bill Clinton. Because of Palestinian violence and fear that Arab dissatisfaction would have detrimental consequences upon the British empire, the British implemented a policy of appeasement with the Arabs resulting in the White Paper of 1939, which was a sellout of British promises, and locked Palestine’s door to European Jewry who so desperately needed to escape the claws of the Nazis.

TFJ Series 2: Episode 2
The Arab revolt resulted in widespread violence across the land aimed at both Jewish and British targets. British officer and Christian Zionist, Orde Wingate trained Hagana fighters how to defend themselves. These troops assisted the British in quelling the Arab Revolt. These very same troops instructed by the British would become members of a Jewish revolt against the British less than ten years later.
As the world was shocked by the atrocities performed against the Jews featured in the news after the Anschluss in March 1938, there was pressure in Washington to make a humanitarian effort on behalf of the refugees. America announced the Evian Conference to take place in July 1938 at Lake Geneva composed of 32 countries to alleviate the refugee crises. The conference was a total farce as no country, with the exception of the Dominican Republic, was prepared to open their borders and assist the refugees. This sent a clear message to Hitler that he would do whatever he wished and the suffering of millions of humans in Europe did not interest the world.

Welcome to our second season of Teller From Jerusalem.
We are kicking things off with an episode on Character Development, focusing on Anger.
Anger is a very destructive emotion, and accordingly we must implement a plan to ensure that rage does not usurp us from the driver’s seat, lest we say words that can destroy relationships and even marriages. Even intelligent and kind people surrender their wisdom and sense of proportion under the influence of untamed anger.
TFJ provides some nifty tips and insights that demonstrate that we can indeed control our temper, and guard our tongues from not uttering regrettable and damaging statements.
How do you react when you encounter an enraged person, what should you do if you think what you are about to do may precipitate an angry response, and how can you harness your angry emotions in a beneficial way?

TFJ: Special Episode!
The Haganah launched a floating underground railroad to bring immigrants into Israel after the conclusion of WW II. The British enforced their White Paper which forbade Jewish immigration to Palestine, so Holocaust survivors who were caught trying to run the blockade were incarcerated under cruel conditions in Cyprus.
In a daring move, the Haganah retrofitted an old steam liner packing it with over 5000 Jews that were languishing in DP camps and sailed to Israel in the summer of 1947. His Majesty’s Navy attacked the boat, renamed the Exodus, killing and wounding passengers. The survivors were not sent to nearby Cyprus, but to the belly of the beast they had just barely escaped, Germany. The harshness and the heartlessness of the British was a media headline causing sympathy for the Zionist cause and would ultimately be an inspiration to Soviet Jewry.

TFJ: Series 1 Episode 40: The Birth of Israel
With fear that Rommel’s conquest of Africa may bring the German Army to Palestine, the Hagana, the prelude to the Israel Defense Forces, created an elite strike force called the Palmach. Menachem Begin assumes the leadership of the Irgun underground militia and becomes the most Wanted Man by the British in Palestine.
In order to terminate the White Paper’s restriction on Jewish immigration to Palestine, all three Jewish military forces in Israel unite to fight the British. Their efforts cause enormous interruption, aggravation and expense to the British and they retaliate with an operation that arrests 2700 Jews, many of them Zionist leaders, impound weapons and incriminating documents.

TFJ: Series 1 Episode 40: The Birth of Israel
The very week that the British rounded up 2700 suspected Jewish underground members, the Kielce pogrom broke out in Poland.
Despite the millions and millions murdered and maimed during the Holocaust, over a year after World War II had come to its completion, a medieval blood libel was unleashed upon scores of innocent Jewish survivors from the death camps in Kielce, Poland.
TFJ interviews 95 year-old Mr. Josef Levkovich the capturer of Amon Göth the commandant of Plaszow (Schindler’s List) who arrived with a tank and security personnel preventing the rioters from continuing their bloodbath upon every remaining Jew in the region.

TFJ Series 1: Episode 38: The Birth of Israel
Just as the British excused their heartless behavior by offering an excuse that no one believed, that spies might have infiltrated among the refugees and then would commit espionage against His Majesty’s Government; the United States State department, with the fullest cooperation of President Roosevelt shamelessly employed the same lame and false excuse that spies could be among the Jewish refugees seeking sanctuary and therefore they posed a risk to national security and must be turned away.
The State department and FDR were determined to even violate the law to see to it that Jews did not escape to America. United States policy was so blatant that it even prompted Hitler to comment, “By what right did the US have to condemn German policy when America would not accept what Germany is disposing of.”

TFJ Series 1 Episode 37 - The Birth of Israel
When the British refused to allow 10,000 Jewish children to escape Europe and come to Palestine, it could not be that that they did not understand that barring their entry meant subjecting them to their annihilation. Images from Kristallnacht had been broadcast across worldwide media. And still Britain issued the White Paper agreeing to all of the Arab demands meaning that there would be no haven in Palestine for Jews fleeing for their lives and that the home for the Jews promised in the Balfour Declaration could not be realized.
TFJ examines the plight of three doomed ships from this period which vividly highlight that Jews had nowhere in the world to escape to and the establishment of a Jewish state was a matter of life and death. As the British were unconcerned about this reality, Palestinian Jewry, most notably the Haganah, the precursor of the Israel Defence Forces, worked to smuggle in what the British deemed illegal immigrants. If they were caught, the British, ironically, like the Nazis, placed them in camps behind barbed wire.

TJF The Birth of Israel: Series 1: Episode 36
Just as Neville Chamberlain bought shame to himself and the British government by his policy of appeasement a the Munich Conference; likewise the British Mandatory Authority foolishly engaged in a policy of appeasement with the Arabs in Palestine. The policy intended to calm the Arabs and curb further violence did nothing of the sort and the untold lives of hundreds of thousands of Jews, likely millions, paid the price. The Peele Commission proposed offering the Jews just a small sliver of land and the balance be awarded to the Arabs, but even this outrageously advantageous solution was rejected out of hand by the Arabs.

TFj: The Birth of Israel: Series 1 Episode 33
Al-Husseini admired the way the Nazis were exterminating Jews and conducted meetings as to how their perfected system could be imported to the Middle East. And before even waiting for Erwin Rommel and the Afrika Korps to invade Egypt the Jerusalem mufti joined hands with the Nazis to parachute terrorists into Israel to start and Arab revolt against the Jews and the British. Al-Husseini had the copyright and the Germans had the logistics, fortunately, it did not work.

The rise of a pro-German government threatened the Jews of Iraq who learned in 1941 that antisemitism was not just confined to just their European brothers and sisters. The situation was exploited by Muslim leaders who made it very clear to Iraq’s Jewish community that was so integral in creating Iraqi culture, that they had no present or future in a land where they had lived for 2500 years.

TFJ: Series 1 Episode 25: The Birth of Israel
During the 1995-96 academic year, Yale University altered its housing policy to require freshmen and sophomores to live in coed dormitories without gender-specific bathrooms. Four (originally five) Orthodox Jewish freshmen appealed to the administration to absolve them from this requirement as it violated Jewish norms of modesty. Although Yale granted exemptions to others, it would not budge for the Yale Five who ended up suing the college for violating their constitutionally protected freedom of religion. Here is another poignant example of people expressing opinions despite their ignorance.

TFJ: Series 1 Episode 24: Special Episode: The Birth of Israel
After the French Revolution there was a sense that the quest for liberty, egalitarianism and brotherhood were attainable, just like after the American revolution there was a sense that the pursuit of happiness was an attainable goal. Borders were changing, maybe even human nature was changing. Maybe, maybe there was even hope that a Jewish state could be restored.
To enlarge his empire and further secure his personal record in history, Napoleon traveled with his army to Egypt. And even though he was routed by the British in the Battle of the Nile, this did not dampen his visions of grandeur and he decided to invade Palestine. After some initial successful battles, basing himself on a sense of overconfidence and being undefeatable, he granted the Jews freedom to their own land and signed his proclamation from his headquarters in Jerusalem that he had not yet captured and never would.
He gave the Jews hope for their homeland, and then dashed it when it turned out to be a promise that he could never deliver. His second blow was even more devastating: in 1791 France declared all men to be equal, even Jews.
Napoleon and the French people, then had second thoughts. They had given the Jews equal rights too cheaply. For the Jews to be awarded the status of equality they would have to swear that they were Frenchman with loyalties exclusively to fellow Frenchmen, not fellow Jews, with no national aspirations for the Land of Israel. This affirmation was to be sanctioned by the Sanhedrin which had been defunct for 13 centuries.
Any observer viewing matters in 1807 would have concluded that the idea of Jews returning to the Land of Israel was over for good. History had the last laugh.

TFJ: Series 1 Episode 21: The Birth of Israel
At the beginning of the 1900s new settlers arrived in Israel who were very different from the earlier, pious settlers living in Israel. In garb, outlook and conduct the differences were vast, and it was Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, better known as Rav Kook who attempted to bridge the gap by not veering from tradition, but also not writing off the new immigrants. Rav Kook was exiled from Israel during WWI and spent the duration in London at the time of the Balfour Declaration. Jewish parliamentarians, afraid that they might be accused of dual loyalty for supporting the creation of a Jewish state in Israel, shamelessly asserted that Judaism does not require a Jewish homeland. This commenced a discussion that will last through three episodes regarding man’s ability, and sometimes even predilection, to render an opinion whether or not they are qualified to do so.

Over six thousand gathered for Herzl’s funeral in Vienna. In 1949 the State of Israel honored Herzl’s request and brought his bones to be buried in the state that he envisioned. Assimilated Herzl did not appreciate the meaning of the Land of Israel to the Jews, and was more concerned about acquiring a pragmatic solution – even if it would not be in Israel. TFJ takes a look at other lands that were offered to the Jews such as Birobidzan in far-eastern Siberia. Herzl’s family did not follow in his path, leaving his legacy to be treasured by those who moved to the land that he foresaw.

The majority who left departed to America; a small fraction ascended to Palestine. Young Jewish boys under Tsarist decree had to suffer the plight of becoming “cantonists.”

FDR’s State Department, and the visa division in particular, headed by Breckinridge Long, adopted a policy of overt anti-semitism and kept the doors of the United States sealed to refugees whose life depended upon escaping Europe. When things look catastrophic there is often a silver lining, case in point: The Auschwitz Protocols. As Dreyfuss languishes on Devil’s island, Emil Zola comes to his rescue by publishing, J’accuse. The most important work on sparking antisemitism, the fictitious Protocols of the Elders of Zion, finds an enthusiastic supporter and disseminator in America, car magnate, Henry Ford.

Hatikva is unique among national anthems. A maid employed by the French military found a memo in the trash in the German embassy in Paris with military secrets. The French Minister of War connected the document – despite not a shred of evidence – to a Jewish artillery captain, Alfred Dreyfuss, who subsequently was convicted of spying and denounced as a traitor. This set off anti-Jewish rioting, similar to blood libels, which also made no sense, but were lethal and costly for innocent Jewish victims. This was a tipping point for a reporter covering the trial named Theodore Herzl.
