Join Dr. Kirstin Birkhaug for a discussion centered around the work of Phillis Wheatley, an American writer who is considered the first African-American author of a published book of poetry.
Kirstin Anderson Birkhaug (PhD, University of Wisconsin-Madison) is assistant professor of political science at Hope College, where she teaches Introduction to American Politics, State and Local Government, and all upper-level political theory courses, including American Political and Social Thought, Ancient and Medieval Political Thought, Modern Political Thought, and Contemporary Political Thought. Dr. Birkhaug is also a member of the Emmaus Scholars faculty and the faculty advisor for the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Leadership Fellows Program at Hope College. She joined the Department of Political Science in 2023.

Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, Kevin J. Hayes spent his twenties living the life of a bike bum, but he eventually went to graduate school at the University of Delaware, graduating with his PhD in English in 1991. After graduation, he became a professor at the University of Central Oklahoma, retiring in 2015 and moving home to Toledo, where he keeps busy reading, writing, and riding his bicycle. He has published numerous books during his career, including The Road to Monticello: The Life and Mind of Thomas Jefferson; George Washington: A Life in Books, for which he received the George Washington Prize; and Undaunted Mind: The Intellectual Life of Benjamin Franklin.

Mark C. Meade is the Assistant Director of the Thomas Merton Center at Bellarmine University. In over 20 years at the Center as an archivist, he has assisted scholars from around the world while himself presenting and publishing internationally on Merton's writings. Mark served as the sixteenth president of the International Thomas Merton Society. His scholarship has focused on Merton's autobiography and dialogue with the writings of Victoria Ocampo, Albert Camus, and Flannery O'Connor.

Nicholas Buccola is a writer, lecturer, and teacher who specializes in the area of American political thought. He is the author of One Man's Freedom: Goldwater, King, and the Struggle over an American Ideal, which will be published by Princeton University Press in October 2025. His previous books include The Fire Is upon Us: James Baldwin, William F. Buckley Jr., and the Debate over Race in America (Princeton University Press, 2019) and The Political Thought of Frederick Douglass: In Pursuit of American Liberty (New York University Press, 2012). He is the editor of The Essential Douglass: Writings and Speeches (Hackett, 2016) and Abraham Lincoln and Liberal Democracy (University Press of Kansas, 2016).
Nicholas is the Dr. Jules K. Whitehill Professor of Humanism and Ethics in the Department of Government at Claremont McKenna College. His essays have appeared in scholarly journals including The Review of Politics and American Political Thought as well as popular outlets such as The New York Times, Salon, The Baltimore Sun, and Dissent.

Abby Hall Blanco is an Associate Professor in Economics at the University of Tampa in Tampa, Florida. She is a Senior Affiliated Scholar with the Mercatus Center at George Mason University and a Senior Fellow with the Independent Institute in Oakland, California. She is a Non-Resident Fellow with Defense Priorities and a Public Choice and Public Policy Fellow with the American Institute for Economic Research. She earned her PhD in Economics from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.
Hall's work includes topics surrounding militarism, security, and national defense. She has written extensively on issues related to foreign intervention and institutional change and military technologies. Her coauthored books include "Tyranny Comes Home: The Domestic Fate of U.S. Militarism" and "Manufacturing Militarism: U.S. Government Propaganda in the War on Terror," with Stanford University Press, "The Political Economy of Terrorism, Counterterrorism, and the War on Terror" with Cambridge University Press, and "How To Run Wars: A Confidential Playbook for the National Security Elite" with the Independent Institute.

Dr. Benedict Whalen completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Dallas, and his graduate degrees at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He then taught at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi before joining Hillsdale College in 2014. Much of his teaching is in the literature of the Renaissance, including especially the works of Shakespeare and his fellow playwrights. Now one of Kentucky’s most respected historians, John Kleber was a member of the third graduating class of Trinity High School in 1959. Four years later he earned a history BA at Bellarmine College, graduating summa cum laude. By 1969, Kleber had earned his Master’s degree and PhD from the University of Kentucky. At Morehead State University, he became associate professor of history, director of the Academic Honors Program, and dean of the Caudill College of Humanities. He is the editor of The Kentucky Encyclopedia and The Encyclopedia of Louisville.

Michael G. Adams is Kentucky's 86th Secretary of State.
Michael graduated from McCracken County public schools, was the first in his family to get a bachelor's degree, and attended Harvard Law School on low-income aid. Michael worked for Senator Mitch McConnell and Governor Ernie Fletcher before moving to Washington to serve as Counsel to the U.S. Deputy Attorney General in the second Bush Administration.

Join the #McConnellCenter as we host Dr. E Christian Kopff and he makes an argument as to why you need to read the works of poet, philosopher, rhetorician, and humorist, Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC-43 BC). Dr. Kopff was born in Brooklyn NY, November 22, 1946 and educated at St. Paul's School (Garden City NY), Haverford College PA (B.A., summa cum laude) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (PhD, Classics).
He has taught at the University of Colorado, Boulder since 1973. For about five of the last thirty years he has lived in Rome, Italy, teaching and studying. He is editor of a critical edition of the Greek text of Euripides' Bacchae (Teubner, 1982) and author of over 100 articles and reviews on scholarly, pedagogical and popular topics. He currently works with the Classics Department of the University of Urbino, Italy on ancient Greek lyric poetry.

Ambassador Rudd served as Australia’s twenty-sixth Prime Minister from 2007 to 2010, then as Minister for Foreign Affairs, before a second term as Prime Minister in 2013. He was Member for Griffith in the Australian Parliament from 1998 to 2013.
Since leaving government, Ambassador Rudd has resided in the United States where he is recognised as a leading analyst of China. In 2015, he became inaugural President of the Asia Society Policy Institute in New York. In 2020, he was appointed President and CEO of the Asia Society globally and, in 2022, he founded the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis.In 2019, Ambassador Rudd was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia for eminent service to Indigenous reconciliation, innovative economic initiatives, and major policy reform, and through senior advisory roles with international organisations.

McConnell Center welcomes Dr. Ricky L. Jones to discuss The Criminalization of Black History.
Raised by his grandmother in Atlanta's Carver Homes housing project, Ricky L. Jones not only became the first member of his immediate family to graduate high school, but by age 28 he also earned a Ph.D. Currently, he is Professor and Chair of the University of Louisville's Department of Pan-African Studies. Jones was educated as an undergraduate at the United States Naval Academy and Morehouse College. He was only the second African American to receive a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Kentucky where he specialized in Political Philosophy and Comparative Politics.

McConnell Center welcomes Dr. Michael Greve to discuss Federalism Among the States.
Professor of Law Michael S. Greve joined the faculty of the Antonin Scalia Law School, George Mason University in fall 2012 after having served as John G. Searle Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he specialized in constitutional law, courts, and business regulation and served as chairman of the Competitive Enterprise Institute.
A prolific writer, Greve is the author of nine books and a multitude of articles appearing in scholarly publications, as well as numerous editorials, short articles, and book reviews. He is a frequent speaker for professional and scholarly organizations and has made many appearances on radio and television.

Dr Kathryn Norlock is a professor of philosophy at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, and the Kenneth Mark Drain Chair in Ethics, as well as Acting Chair (for 2022-2023) in Gender and Social Justice.
In 2015, she became a co-founder and co-editor of Feminist Philosophy Quarterly, a peer-reviewed, open-access journal free to authors and readers.
Dr Norlock’s ongoing projects include research in moral emotions and ethical virtues, especially forgiveness.

McConnell Center welcomes Professor Jeffery Pojanowski to discuss Constitutional Interpretation and the Classical Legal Tradition.
Jeff Pojanowski joined the faculty and community of Notre Dame Law School in 2010 and was promoted to full professor in 2015. He teaches and writes in the areas of administrative law, jurisprudence, legal interpretation, and torts. He has published work in the Georgetown Law Journal, Harvard Law Review, Michigan Law Review, Northwestern University Law Review, the Virginia Law Review, and the Yale Law Journal, among other publications. He serves as co-editor of The American Journal of Jurisprudence.
Pojanowski earned his A.B. in Public Policy with highest honors from Princeton University and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 2004, where he was Articles Co-Chair for the Harvard Law Review. After law school, he served as a law clerk to then-Judge John Roberts on the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and then to Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court of the United States. He then practiced law with Latham & Watkins in Washington, D.C., where he specialized in appellate litigation and administrative-law matters.

McConnell Center welcomes Dr. Eric McDaniel to discuss The Continuing Crusade: American Religious Exceptionalism and the Future of American Politics.
Professor McDaniel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Government and the co-director of the Politics of Race and Ethnicity Lab at the University of Texas at Austin College of Liberal Arts. His research examines how the intersection of race and religion influence the American political landscape. His book, Politics in the Pews: The Political Mobilization of Black Churches, provides an explanation for why some Black churches choose to engage the political world while others do not. His most recent book, The Everyday Crusade: Christian Nationalism in American Politics, co-authored with Irfan Nooruddin and Allyson Shortle, explores the ramifications of Americans believing that their nation is God’s chosen nation.

McConnell Center welcomes Jeana Dunlap for a discussion entitled “History and Liberal Policy: Generational Wealth in Louisville and America.”
Jeana Dunlap is a lecturer in Urban Planning at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. She considers herself an urbanist, strategic advisor and recovering economist working at the intersection of community and economic development. Jeana’s local government experience includes affordable housing finance, public infrastructure and place-based strategies for neighborhood improvement. In 2014, Jeana established the Vacant & Public Property Administration and designed interventions that reduce vacancy and abandonment. In 2017, Jeana partnered with advocacy organizations to facilitate the Redlining Louisville Community Dialogue series, shedding light on the history and current impacts of past and present forms of redlining practices.

Matthew Continetti is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, where his work focuses on American political thought and history, with a particular focus on the development of the Republican Party and the American conservative movement in the 20th century.
A prominent journalist, analyst, author, and intellectual historian of the right, Continetti is the founding editor of The Washington Free Beacon. Previously, he was opinion editor at The Weekly Standard.
Continetti is the author of two previous books: “The Persecution of Sarah Palin: How the Elite Media Tried to Bring Down a Rising Star” (Sentinel, 2009) and “The K Street Gang: The Rise and Fall of the Republican Machine” (Doubleday, 2006).
He has a BA in history from Columbia University.

Dr. Nash is an independent scholar, historian, and lecturer, with specialties in twentieth century American political and intellectual history. McConnell Center celebrates Mike Adams, Kentucky Secretary of State, with the presentation of the 2022 Mattingly Award.
The Chris Mattingly Award for Outstanding Community Leadership in Kentucky was established to honor the memory of one of the first McConnell Scholars. Chris Mattingly, 21, died as a result of a car accident on Nov. 1, 1996. He had completed 104 hours towards a political science degree at the University of Louisville and was a member of the first McConnell Scholars' Leadership Council.
First presented in 1998, the Mattingly Award is given annually to an individual who reflects exceptional character and leadership benefitting the Commonwealth. McConnell Scholars and alumni nominate and vote to determine the recipient of the Mattingly Award.

John Rose is Associate Director of the Civil Discourse Project. In addition to helping coordinate the Civil Discourse Project’s programming, John teaches courses in Happiness and Human Flourishing, Christian Ethics, Conservatism, and Political Polarization. His research concerns the tradition of virtue ethics and Christian theology. In Season 5 of the McConnell Center’s Vital Remnants Podcast, we are using Russell Kirk’s The Roots of American Order to explore the historical roots from which America has grown. Rather than focusing on one defining moment, we are exploring America’s inheritance from thousands of years of human history grounded in five key cities—Jerusalem, Athens, Rome, London, and Philadelphia. Each episode relates to a corresponding chapter and includes a conversation with a guest expert that goes beyond the text. Our journey begins in this episode with a conversation between McConnell Center Director Dr. Gary Gregg and Dr. Bradley J. Birzer, Professor of History and Russell Amos Kirk Chair in American Studies at Hillsdale College. The two discuss the purpose of the project, the context and relevance of the book, and Kirk’s meaning of the word "order."
