McKaylee is a 22-year-old stake Relief Society president who is confused and angry when the Lord doesn't grant her heartfelt desire to serve a mission. And Liliana is a recent convert and the daughter of Mexican immigrants, worried she needs to change who she is in order to fit in with the women around her. What do these sisters all have in common? Through their struggles and questions, they each found support, belonging, and increased faith in Jesus Christ as members of the Relief Society. Life has taught Kristin Yee how to “jump”: to leave her comfort zone and leap into the unknown, trusting in God’s love and perfect plan. Following a spiritual prompting to leave art school in San Francisco, Kristin's journey of faith took her down an unexpected path-- one that ultimately led to her dream job working as an animator and producer for Disney for 13 years. By sharing the personal revelation she has received and trusted, Kristin teaches listeners "what faith looks like." Through these exciting, and at times frightening, life changes and transitions, Kristin shares with humility and grace how she has learned to partner with the Savior, Jesus Christ for support, comfort, and validation. Kristin was hired by the Church in 2016 as the animation team manager, and she currently serves on the Primary general advisory council.

There are more than 150 women named or referenced in the Bible, with dozens of female characters in the Old Testament alone. While not small in number, many of these women are not well known, and some are misunderstood as simple, less essential, or merely one-dimensional characters. But what can the women in the Bible teach us about Jesus Christ, and how can their stories bring us closer to Him? In this episode, Camille Fronk Olson, author and professor emeritus of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University shares how the study of women in scripture enhances our understanding of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and strengthens our faith in the Lord's ability to use ordinary people in His work. Camille shares story after story of faithful and inspiring women in the Old Testament, including Hagar, Hannah, Deborah, Abigail, Bathsheba, the daughters of Zelophehad, and more. Camille teaches that even small efforts to understand the culture, history and context of the Old Testament will improve and enrich our understanding of the women in the Bible.

How can we develop a healthier body image as Latter-day Saint women despite beauty norms and pressures in the world today? How can we help the young women and girls around us learn to treasure the divine gift of their bodies as they grow and develop into women? Dr. Lauren Barnes is the director of clinical training for the Marriage and Family Therapy program at Brigham Young University and specializes in women’s issues, including body image and eating disorders. Church historian and author Keith Erekson joins us to discuss how faithful women and men throughout history have grappled with doubts and questions, and how we can find peace, light and understanding during times of challenge when we seek to truly commune with God. Keith shares how each person's struggle with questions and doubt is individual, and how finding peace and answers is also individual, ultimately made possible by the Holy Ghost, the great "individualizer." Keith also shares useful counsel for those struggling to help their loved ones find answers to their questions. The best advice? Listen and love, and trust in your own witness of the truth.

But Relief Society advisory council member Kathryn Reynolds believes there is no such thing as a “Plan B” in life. “Even if you exercise your strongest faith, God will not always reward you immediately according to your desires. Rather, God will respond with what in His eternal plan is best for you. He loves you to a depth and completeness you cannot conceive of in your mortal state. Indeed, were you to know His entire plan, you would never ask for that which is contrary to it even though your feelings tempt you to do so. Sincere faith gives understanding and strength to accept the will of our Heavenly Father when it differs from our own. Jen Allen, director of events for FamilySearch, shares how RootsTech connects people from all over the world, regardless of religious affiliation, with each other and with their ancestors. She gives insight into how the event has shifted and grown since the pandemic, allowing for more international participation, over 1,500 sessions in multiple languages, and new online features to connect attendees. Jen also talks about how sharing stories of her ancestors has strengthened her children in their challenges and increased her faith in Jesus Christ.

In the scriptures we are taught to “be still,” (Doctrine and Covenants 101:16) and “not to run faster than we have strength” (Mosiah 4:27), but also to be “anxiously engaged in a good cause” (Doctrine and Covenants 58:27–28) and to “serve God with all our heart, might, mind, and strength” (Doctrine and Covenants 4). As busy Latter-day Saint women, how do we balance this seemingly contradictory counsel, allowing ourselves stillness and rest while also engaging with all our hearts in the work of salvation? In this episode, psychologist and author Carrie Skarda teaches how practicing mindfulness can help us develop a more healthy and joyful rhythm between stillness and busyness, while also strengthening our relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and improving our prayer and other religious practices. More Latter-day Saints than ever before have the opportunity of receiving temple ordinances and then returning often. This world-wide blessing unifies Saints with their families, their ancestors, and to the Lord Jesus Christ. In this episode, Church historian Ryan Saltzgiver shares stories from the Global Histories project of pioneering women traveling great distances at incredible sacrifice to gather Saints on both sides of the veil. We also talk with Neelima Surisetty Rayudu, a Church member from India, about her experiences traveling to the Hong Kong and Cebu Philippines temples to be sealed to her parents and then her husband. In sharing her personal experiences of mission service, motherhood, and her early immersion in Church history, Sister Kaylene P. Harding, a member of the Primary General Advisory Council, inspires women to use the power of the priesthood throughout their lives. Enish Davila was born and raised a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cancun, Mexico and served as a full-time missionary in Puebla, Mexico. When she returned home from her mission in 2016, she committed to grow in the gospel throughout her life and not rely solely on the faith-promoting experiences and testimony from her mission. In this episode, Enish talks about the mental, emotional, and spiritual challenges she experienced as a returned missionary, and how she continued to feel the fire of the gospel as she grew in spiritual and emotional maturity. Enish also shares her experiences as a Relief Society president in a Spanish-speaking Young Single Adult ward, counseling and learning from sisters with various backgrounds, experiences, and challenges.
As a young adult, Susie Mullen lived in California and had a spectacular professional dancing career, but she felt unhappy and had deep questions about God. When an unexpected career opportunity took her to Provo, Utah to coach ballroom dance, Susie was introduced to the gospel of Jesus Christ and nurtured in her faith by new friends and colleagues. Susie eventually joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and today she serves as a member of the General Relief Society Council. In this episode, she shares how as parents, spouses, neighbors, and brothers and sisters in the gospel, we can follow the example of Jesus Christ to nurture others wherever they are on the gospel path, loving them and inviting them closer to Jesus Christ. “I knew in my mind, in my heart, in my whole soul that the Book of Mormon was true. And that was a sweet and precious moment when the prayers of a longing child were answered,” shares Young Women General Advisory Council Jeri Cahoon of the time when she came to know the Lord for herself, even though it was a little later in life than she anticipated. Over the past several years, Jeri has served with her husband as mission leaders in the Mexico Saltillo Mission, served in the presidency of the Salt Lake Inner City Mission, and through her profession has been a designer for the Temple Department. As a member of the hymnbook committee—a small group tasked with compiling a new worldwide hymnbook for the Church—Sonja gives insight into the global nature of the song submissions and review process. She shares her love for the women she works with as director of BYU Women’s Chorus, and her admiration of their passion and individuality. Barbara Thompson served as the second counselor to President Julie B. Beck in the Relief Society general presidency from 2007-2012. Barbara is known and loved for her practical, down-to-earth nature, her decades-long service as a social worker, and her wit and sense of humor. Women in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are teachers. Women teach formally and informally, both in large and small settings to children, teenagers, women, and to mixed groups of adult men and women. Women also teach in the home, which has been emphasized recently as the center of gospel learning. The opportunities women have to influence and strengthen others through teaching the gospel is exciting and faith-promoting, but it can also be intimidating or overwhelming. In this episode, Kaylen Walton Nelson, a full-time Seminary teacher, shares practical tips for creating greater belonging, conversion, and relevance in any teaching situation, and why those three principles matter. Kaylen also shares how women can learn more about opportunities to teach Seminary or Institute part-time or full-time, and how she has come to more fully love and embrace her opportunities to gather Israel as a teacher and leader in the Church.

Through stories from her personal life, professional experiences, and Church service, Sheri Dew illustrates how we can increase our spiritual capacity to receive revelation and better understand our own unique personal mission. She shares her experience serving as the first unmarried woman in the Relief Society general presidency, and urges us to build bridges to people who may not feel, for a variety of reasons, that they belong or fit in the Church. Carol Lawrence-Costley believes in the power of stories to validate experiences, change hearts, and foster unity and compassion. In this episode, Carol shares her own story: a daughter of Jamaican immigrants born in London, England who joined the Church as a young teenager in the 1970s. Now serving on the Young Women Advisory Council, Carol also shares what she has learned listening to the stories of those different from her, and how as Church members we can grow together in unity and love when we listen with open hearts and see our common faith in Jesus Christ.

“The young women who are now the young adult women and the mothers and the leaders in the church are doing and becoming exactly what I prayed they would become and do. It is such a joy for me to see that and to see these valiant young women taking their place and shaping this dispensation.” In this episode, Sister Elaine S. Dalton, 13th president of the Young Women organization, provides ongoing encouragement to “her” young women in the various roles they have. She shares her thoughts about the new Young Women theme and the impact these truths can have on our lives. She talks about the premature death of her father, and the strength that has come from the scriptures and understanding her inherent identity as a daughter of Heavenly Parents. When thinking about Sister Dalton’s legacy, her focus on connecting with individuals is obvious in her timeless statement: “One virtuous woman led by the Spirit can change the world.”

Wendy brings her years of experience and various perspectives to discuss the topic of uncertainty. While navigating everyday feelings of uncertainty due to the pandemic, in our marriages, during major life decisions or changes, or with our own beliefs, Wendy shares principles we can use and rely on to deal with this uncertainty. She answers questions like, how can we have hope? How can we give up needing to be in control? What happens next? In the midst of this anxiety and confusion we may feel, as we live our values, look for opportunities to grow, and trust in the Lord, we can find peace, calm, and meaning in our lives.

In this episode, Church historian and Harvard PhD Melissa Inouye shares the intentional effort to include Latter-day Saint women in the Church’s Global Histories project, with a goal that more will know and learn their names and stories. She reminds listeners that because the majority of Church members live outside the United States, most of our history as a Church is also outside the United States. She shares her experience battling stage 4 ovarian cancer and how she found joy through service in a time of overwhelming pain and fear. “When I focused on myself, when my thoughts turned inward, the world became a very dark place. But when they turned outward, not only was there light, but even in the midst of the greatest suffering, I was able to experience joy.” Sister Wright also shares the lessons she learned serving on the Young Women Advisory Council, and how she has felt the Lord’s love for her and her family through her calling to the Primary.

She offers hope and understanding to others struggling with infertility and provides helpful suggestions on how we all can better minister to and comfort those we love.

“Depression thrives in secrecy, but shrinks in empathy.” On today’s episode, Jane Clayson Johnson shares her own experience with clinical depression and the valuable insights she’s gathered through interviewing others about their stories. She discusses the unique challenges members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints may face when their ability to experience joy--in a faith centered on a plan of happiness--is inhibited by depression. When we work to overcome mental health stigma, understand mental illness, “mourn with those that mourn” and “comfort those that stand in need of comfort,” we can create opportunities for healing and hope for the future.

She joins us today to share her experiences from a life of service in the Church, and to discuss the life and teachings of another great leader of Young Women from our history, Ardeth G. Old buildings that are loved for their stories and significance are a central part of the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day. Historic Sites curator Emily Utt introduces us to her predecessor Florence Smith Jacobsen, the first female Church curator, who used her passion, personal connections, and great influence to preserve our heritage through building preservation. Known for restoring many church buildings, including the Lion House, Beehive House, and the interior of the Manti Temple, and for her involvement in the creation of the Church History Museum, Florence connected the importance historic sites and artifacts to our lives today by teaching that the best way to preserve our pioneer legacy is by becoming worthy of that story. Emily also offers insights into her current work as curator to preserve historic sites and temples, including the Salt Lake Temple renovation project.
Though Latter-day Saint women have participated in missionary work by sharing the gospel since the beginning of the restoration, it wasn't until 1898 that the first "lady missionaries" were called to serve full-time missions. Church Historian and author Matthew McBride shares stories of what life was like for these first sister missionaries, why their influence was an important part of the growth of the Church in the early 1900s, and how they paved the way for the thousands of sister missionaries to follow. Neill Marriott, former counselor in the Young Women general presidency, with her unique warmth and candor shares about accepting, learning from, and finding meaning and joy in each season of life. Utah Relief Society women were among the first in the United States to receive the right to vote, and Seraph Young, the grand-niece of Brigham Young, was the very first woman to cast a ballot in the United States under a women's equal suffrage law in 1870. Many women in the Church across the globe serve in Church Communications callings, or volunteer positions, building key relationships and performing bridge-building outreach to government, academic, and interfaith leaders and organizations in their communities. As a recent temple matron of the Salt Lake Temple, former Primary general president Rosemary Wixom shares how our efforts to attend the temple, increase our understanding, and reflect on our covenants bring power into our lives. In this episode, we discuss how to improve our temple experience, regardless of where we are on the covenant path. We talk about ways to learn more about the temple and where to go when we have questions. Rosemary shares her love of the temple, the Savior, and the inspiring members of the Church she met every day as the temple matron. From her lifetime of service, she reminds us that the Lord honors our commitments and sacrifices, and we can have hope, peace, and comfort among turmoil and at times of isolation.

On today's episode we are excited to welcome Sister Sharon Eubank, first counselor in the Relief Society general presidency and director of Latter-day Saint Charities, as we learn about Alice C. Smith (1913-2006)-- a fascinating former Relief Society general board member, college educator, diplomat and missionary. We'll discuss Smith's relevant 1969 discourse about visiting teaching (or ministering, as it is known today) and hear Sister Eubank share her own thoughts on what Christlike service looks like, how we can minister with greater compassion and direction from the Spirit, and why we need to "replenish" and fill our own souls in order to best serve others. "Covenants—or binding promises between us and Heavenly Father—are essential for our eternal progression. Step by step, he tutors us to become like him by enlisting us in his work. At baptism we covenant to love him with all our hearts and love our sisters and brothers as ourselves. In the temple we further covenant to be obedient, selfless, faithful, honorable, charitable. Sarah Melissa Granger Kimball (1818–1898) spent her life promoting women’s public activity and private “spiritual understanding,” as she explained in this 1895 speech delivered at the National Council of Women. Born in Phelps, New York, she and her family were baptized after her father read the Book of Mormon shortly following its publication. As a young woman, Kimball attended both the School of the Prophets and the Hebrew School in Kirtland, Ohio, at least once. After she and her husband migrated to Utah, Kimball supported her husband, Hiram, and their children by teaching school. Her contemporary Emmeline B. Wells said Kimball “had a good faculty for teaching [and] could simplify lessons and adapt them to the understanding of those whom she instructed. ”These educational endeavors from her youth and early adulthood laid the foundation for her intellectual inquiry later in life.

"My first love had been Primary work,” wrote Amy Brown Lyman (1872–1959), after nearly four decades of service on the Relief Society general board. In truth, she loved any program that concentrated on human development and flourishing. Before joining the board in October 1909, her major church work had been in the Young Ladies’ Mutual Improvement Association. Lyman served on the Relief Society general board until 1945, the last five years as president. The first meetings she attended connected her to foundational Relief Society roots: Bathsheba W. Smith, who joined Relief Society as a nineteen-year-old in Nauvoo, was president. At that time the board met in the office of the Woman’s Exponent in Salt Lake City’s Templeton Building.
In May 1831 Lucy Mack Smith stood on the deck of an ice bound ship in Buffalo Harbor on Lake Erie and taught a group of Latter-day Saints the meaning of faith. Mother Neyman addressed the meeting on the subject of charity, encouraging all to be forbearing and forgiving, refraining as much as possible from scrutinizing the conduct of our neighbors, remembering always that we are human and must therefore err. It seemed to be the unanimous agreement of the Spirit that presided over the meeting that tattling and slander should die a natural death; that charity, which covereth a multitude of sins, which thinketh no evil, and suffereth long and is kind, should dig the grave and help to bury all the malice and envy which at any time had intruded upon our peace and harmony; and in their stead establish truth and integrity, twin sisters of charity, and then appoint the Mormon creed as a rear guard to repel the first attack of the enemy, that we might be timely warned to avoid an evil wherein our mutual confidence might be destroyed. All this, though not expressed in so many syllables, was in substance the same, no doubt the sentiments of all present. We hope our new members will understand what will be expected of them in this honorable sisterhood: that they will live above reproach and by guarding the doors of their lips keep themselves from censure.

Sister Brandley’s service on the YLMIA general board spanned eleven years during the presidencies of Mattie Horne Tingey and Ruth May Fox. She joined the board in 1924 and, in addition to working on the magazines, helped to write manuals, plays, songs, programs, and other material. She was also a popular public speaker. E. E. Ericksen, with whom she collaborated on MIA committees, said that her idea of saving souls was to help all of their abilities—cultural, moral, and spiritual. “The human personality was sacred to her, and its development the great spiritual objective,” he said. She also championed young people in asking and finding answers to their own questions. “You are the ones whose responsibility it is to insure the faith and unwavering trust in the gospel which is your heritage,” she wrote.

“What I’m passionate about,” said Francine Russell Bennion (b. 1935), “is human existence, and the relationships between people and God, and what works and what doesn’t.” In an interview, Bennion explained that when she taught a Relief Society or Gospel Doctrine lesson she never wanted to brush off reality and speak only of ideals. Instead, she tried to present fresh, useful, and reality-affirming perspectives that would lift and enhance human relationships.

In the same talk Julie also shared, "This beautiful picture of Mt. Moran in the Tetons, photographed by my brother John, reflects a fundamental question that helped shape my academic studies. The actual question is immaterial; what’s important is that I left the serenity of the landscape and asked a question. What question would you ask about this scene? It likely depends on your background and interests. An outdoor enthusiast may ask about climbing routes, a botanist may wonder about the effects of glaciation on conifers, an artist might want to know how to best capture the reflections in the lake, and a geologist may ask about the tectonic forces that built the mountains. The variety and depth of questions that can be asked about a simple mountain scene can be as numerous as the people who view it. The ability and desire to ask questions and search for answers is a uniquely human attribute that is vital to the scientific, artistic, and religious advancements of humanity. We start asking questions at a very young age, as any parent of a precocious three-year-old knows. This suggests that we bring a questioning spirit with us to earth, and that learning by asking and seeking is one reason that our Heavenly Parents have given us the gift of mortal life."

From childhood, Virginia Hinckley Pearce (b. 1945) found that her parents wove prayer and church service into the fabric of their everyday lives. She remembers that when she or one of her siblings was particularly worried over a situation, her father, Gordon B. Hinckley, would say, “Just say your prayers and go to bed. Get up in the morning; it’ll be clearer.” Pearce has applied that good advice; her own restatement of it is, “Just say your prayers, go to bed, and when you get up in the morning, go back to work.” Gathering for family prayer, going to church, and working on church assignments felt like a natural part of her family life, not something on a list she had to complete. She saw that church work for her mother, Marjorie Pay Hinckley, was “part of who she was,” and that she always seemed energized by doing that work, not pressured or annoyed.
