Life has taught Kristin Yee how to “jump”: to leave her comfort zone and leap into the unknown, trusting in God’s love and perfect plan. Following a spiritual prompting to leave art school in San Francisco, Kristin's journey of faith took her down an unexpected path-- one that ultimately led to her dream job working as an animator and producer for Disney for 13 years. By sharing the personal revelation she has received and trusted, Kristin teaches listeners "what faith looks like." Through these exciting, and at times frightening, life changes and transitions, Kristin shares with humility and grace how she has learned to partner with the Savior, Jesus Christ for support, comfort, and validation. Kristin was hired by the Church in 2016 as the animation team manager, and she currently serves on the Primary general advisory council.

There are more than 150 women named or referenced in the Bible, with dozens of female characters in the Old Testament alone. While not small in number, many of these women are not well known, and some are misunderstood as simple, less essential, or merely one-dimensional characters. But what can the women in the Bible teach us about Jesus Christ, and how can their stories bring us closer to Him? In this episode, Camille Fronk Olson, author and professor emeritus of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University shares how the study of women in scripture enhances our understanding of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and strengthens our faith in the Lord's ability to use ordinary people in His work. Camille shares story after story of faithful and inspiring women in the Old Testament, including Hagar, Hannah, Deborah, Abigail, Bathsheba, the daughters of Zelophehad, and more. Camille teaches that even small efforts to understand the culture, history and context of the Old Testament will improve and enrich our understanding of the women in the Bible.

If you have chosen to live a life of faith in Jesus Christ, it is likely you will experience times when your faith is challenged. Church historian and author Keith Erekson joins us to discuss how faithful women and men throughout history have grappled with doubts and questions, and how we can find peace, light and understanding during times of challenge when we seek to truly commune with God. Keith shares how each person's struggle with questions and doubt is individual, and how finding peace and answers is also individual, ultimately made possible by the Holy Ghost, the great "individualizer." Keith also shares useful counsel for those struggling to help their loved ones find answers to their questions. The best advice? Listen and love, and trust in your own witness of the truth.

When things don’t work out the way we want them to, we may think it requires we accept a lesser reward - a Plan B. But Relief Society advisory council member Kathryn Reynolds believes there is no such thing as a “Plan B” in life. Through a lens of sincere faith and trust in God’s love and eternal plan, she has come to see her life’s sidetracks, struggles and detours as divine. Join us as Kathryn shares the unexpected path to her career as a marriage and family therapist and service on the Relief Society council, and the divine detours and opportunities for learning along the way, including her service as executive assistant to Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Through tender personal experiences, Kathryn testifies of prophets and apostles, as well as the priesthood power and authority of the female officers called to lead and stand as witnesses of Jesus Christ in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today.

“Even if you exercise your strongest faith, God will not always reward you immediately according to your desires. Rather, God will respond with what in His eternal plan is best for you. He loves you to a depth and completeness you cannot conceive of in your mortal state. Indeed, were you to know His entire plan, you would never ask for that which is contrary to it even though your feelings tempt you to do so. Sincere faith gives understanding and strength to accept the will of our Heavenly Father when it differs from our own. We can accept His will with peace and assurance, confident that His infinite wisdom surpasses our own ability to comprehend fully His plan as it unfolds a piece at a time.”

In the scriptures we are taught to “be still,” (Doctrine and Covenants 101:16) and “not to run faster than we have strength” (Mosiah 4:27), but also to be “anxiously engaged in a good cause” (Doctrine and Covenants 58:27–28) and to “serve God with all our heart, might, mind, and strength” (Doctrine and Covenants 4). As busy Latter-day Saint women, how do we balance this seemingly contradictory counsel, allowing ourselves stillness and rest while also engaging with all our hearts in the work of salvation? In this episode, psychologist and author Carrie Skarda teaches how practicing mindfulness can help us develop a more healthy and joyful rhythm between stillness and busyness, while also strengthening our relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and improving our prayer and other religious practices. With beautiful examples from the life of Jesus Christ and using helpful visual imagery, Carrie teaches the ways God invites us to stop or pause, spend quiet moments with Him, and be nurtured and guided by the Spirit to better discern our priorities.

Have you ever wondered in the middle of a trial or challenge to your faith: “Where is God? Why doesn’t He answer me or help me?” Today’s guest Mihaela shares how she has learned that the witness of God’s love and involvement in our lives comes “after the trial of our faith” (Ether 12:6). Mihaela was born in Romania and migrated to California, USA as a teenager with her family. With enthusiasm and authenticity, she shares how she has faced and overcome trials to her faith, including receiving her own personal witness of the truthfulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ as a young woman investigating the Church. Mihaela also discusses how she put her trust in the Lord as she pursued education in music, lived in New York City as a young adult, faced the heartbreak and confusion of infertility, and witnessed the miracles that followed, including learning from and loving a son with disabilities.

“Who can I bless today? How can I reach out?” are questions that Mayavel Amado Pineda, a member of the Relief Society General Advisory Council, encourages us to ask as we seek to better understand ministering and how to go about it. Though ministering may sometimes feel uncomfortable or inconvenient amidst all our pressures in life, we can look to the Savior as an example of caring and connecting, discerning real needs, and receiving direction when we need it. In this episode, Mayavel also shares the blessings that can come from ministering: our lives can be enriched as we make connections and friendships, and our burdens can lifted when we forget about our own worries and gain a better perspective about our own challenges. “Attention has long been focused on [early] missionaries’ sacrifices, but comparatively little attention has been paid to their faithful families. “Sometimes we get overstimulated by news, and by people talking, and by social media, and by everybody’s opinions, and maybe with all the noise we don’t always hear the Spirit and what the Lord has to teach us. If we block out all of that noise, we can allow for music to teach us what’s true.” Dr. Sonja Poulter, director of BYU Women’s Chorus and previous member of the Tabernacle Choir on Temple Square, shares the powerful impact music can have on our lives and worship. As a member of the hymnbook committee—a small group tasked with compiling a new worldwide hymnbook for the Church—Sonja gives insight into the global nature of the song submissions and review process. She shares her love for the women she works with as director of BYU Women’s Chorus, and her admiration of their passion and individuality. Women in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are teachers. Women teach formally and informally, both in large and small settings to children, teenagers, women, and to mixed groups of adult men and women. Women also teach in the home, which has been emphasized recently as the center of gospel learning. The opportunities women have to influence and strengthen others through teaching the gospel is exciting and faith-promoting, but it can also be intimidating or overwhelming. In this episode, Kaylen Walton Nelson, a full-time Seminary teacher, shares practical tips for creating greater belonging, conversion, and relevance in any teaching situation, and why those three principles matter. Kaylen also shares how women can learn more about opportunities to teach Seminary or Institute part-time or full-time, and how she has come to more fully love and embrace her opportunities to gather Israel as a teacher and leader in the Church.

“Our world is really divisive, and it’s really easy to think, “How are we going to fix this?” President Nelson has talked to each of us about what we can do to help gather Israel on both sides of the veil, and I believe uniting is part of that. If we each can be more intentional about the relationships in our sphere of influence and seeking to better understand the lived experiences of others, then I think that is how the world changes.” Join us this week as we talk with Liz Darger, Young Women Advisory Council member and BYU senior associate athletic director. Liz teaches the importance of understanding and truly believing in our own divinity and the divine identity of others as beloved children of Heavenly Parents. Sharing stories from her involvement in the NCAA Common Ground Initiative, Liz provides concrete ideas for making connections and becoming invested in the lives of friends, neighbors, ward members, and family who may believe or live differently. Offering loving counsel to women who may feel a disconnect from God, Liz shares advice for individuals who are struggling to receive a confirmation of their own divine identity or purpose. Finally, Liz shares her special connection with her grandmother, Arlene B. Darger, who served as the first counselor to Sister Elaine A. Cannon in the general Young Women presidency from 1978-1984.

“Sometimes things don’t turn out the way we think they should, but that’s ok because we can rework things, we can be flexible, we can walk through the mud a little bit, we can cross a frozen river, we can do anything that the Lord asks us to do because we know that He is with us and we too can cleave unto our covenants...This is what Emma would have done, and what she did, and what she would want us to do.” On this episode, we welcome back Church historian and author Jenny Reeder, who helps us better understand Emma Smith’s life and her character. Through her extensive research, Jenny shares with us the insights she’s gained into Emma’s partnership with Joseph Smith, her great responsibility in compiling the first hymn book to unify the early Saints, and how she may have been able to process her tragedies and move forward. “Depression thrives in secrecy, but shrinks in empathy.” On today’s episode, Jane Clayson Johnson shares her own experience with clinical depression and the valuable insights she’s gathered through interviewing others about their stories. She discusses the unique challenges members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints may face when their ability to experience joy--in a faith centered on a plan of happiness--is inhibited by depression. When we work to overcome mental health stigma, understand mental illness, “mourn with those that mourn” and “comfort those that stand in need of comfort,” we can create opportunities for healing and hope for the future.

"Drifting, Dreaming, Directing", Ardeth G. Kapp, At the Pulpit: 185 Years of Discourses by Latter-day Saint Women

Bonnie Oscarson served as the 14th president of the Young Women organization, leading young women worldwide through a period of great change and growth from 2013-2018. She joins us today to share her experiences from a life of service in the Church, and to discuss the life and teachings of another great leader of Young Women from our history, Ardeth G. Kapp. The discussion today focuses on themes from Kapp's especially relevant 1980 BYU Women's Conference address, "Drifting, Dreaming, Directing," where she encourages women to direct their lives along the gospel path and seek conversion from personal revelation.

"When changes come, and they always will, for some it may be a test to survive because their foundation is based on practices alone, without an understanding of the eternal, unchanging principles." - Ardeth G. Kapp

"Our greatest dreams will be fulfilled only as we come to understand fully and experience the blessings of the priesthood, the power of the priesthood, and the ordinances of the priesthood in our own lives." - Ardeth G. Kapp

"All individuals are what they are and where they are by a composite of choices that direct their life each day. The responsibility of directing is not only for our own lives, but also for others who may be looking for the light." - Ardeth G. Kapp

As they discuss the legacy of the Young Women program and their current responsibilities, you’ll be inspired to cherish the gift of repentance and to seek the joy that comes from hearing the voice of the Lord and receiving personal revelation. “The Lord [gives us revelation] in a very normal and natural way, and we can have confidence in our life to realize the Lord is speaking to us.” – Sister Bonnie Cordon (30:30) “All of us, at times in our lives, are completely overwhelmed by our life circumstance or by what we’re asked to do, but just know that as we’re consistent in doing the small and simple things and as we’re trying to seek revelation and going through that work and that process, as we rely on Jesus Christ and His Grace that we will be made equal to those things that we’re being asked to do.” – Sister Michelle Craig (32:05) “We talk about this being a new theme, but the reality is that it is an extension of what we have been doing in the past, because we believe in living prophets, we believe that Jesus Christ is at the head of this Church, we believe that this is a living Church and that revelation reigns. … For the lives of our young women at this time, this is very relevant to them as it teaches them their identity and their purpose and their belonging.” – Sister Becky Craven (24:05) Read more about the Young Women general presidency by reading their full bios here: Bonnie Cordon https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/church/leader/bonnie-h-cordon?lang=eng Michelle Craig https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/church/leader/michelle-craig?lang=eng Becky Craven https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/church/leader/becky-craven?lang=eng Learn more about recent changes to the Young Women organization and theme here: Young Women Website https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/callings/young-women-organization Revised Young Women Theme https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/bc/content/ldsorg/content/pdf/children-and-youth/PST_PD60009546_YoungWomenTheme_Wallpapers_750x1334_FINAL.jpg?lang=eng "Beloved Daughters" Bonnie H.

Kapp

The Savior continually taught His disciples and followers to be one, but developing unity as a family, ward unit or team can be a real challenge. Join us as we explore a 1962 discourse by former Relief Society board member Louise W. Madsen (1909–1987) about how working to develop unity with others and with God gives us power. Guest Matt McBride, director of publications for the Church History Department, shares insights on Madsen's life and contributions to the Church, including supervising the creation of the Nursery program for children. "What is this power we may obtain? Since it derives from our unity with God our Father and his son Jesus Christ, is it not in the words of Micah 'to do what is good, to do what the Lord requires of us, to do justly and to walk humbly with our God'? Is it not the privilege to serve we seek, the moving force of compassion to feel? Is it not the power of God-given strength and his blessing of knowledge we cherish? Is it not the power of unselfish thought and action, selflessness, the ability to rise above fault-finding and petty-mindedness we desire? The power to be instrumental in saving souls has been accorded to Relief Society. To build firm testimonies to the divinity of the Savior and of the gospel is our ultimate purpose. Charity, the true love of Christ, is our guiding principle." - Louise W. Madsen

"Cultivating Life's Eternal Values", Mary J. Godfrey, the managing historian of the Joseph Smith Papers, joins us to discuss Mary J. Wilson's talk given in 1949, and her encouragement to develop a pattern of life based on eternal principles of sincere and abiding faith, prayer, and interested in and love for our fellow man.

On today's episode we are excited to welcome Sister Sharon Eubank, first counselor in the Relief Society general presidency and director of Latter-day Saint Charities, as we learn about Alice C. Smith (1913-2006)-- a fascinating former Relief Society general board member, college educator, diplomat and missionary. We'll discuss Smith's relevant 1969 discourse about visiting teaching (or ministering, as it is known today) and hear Sister Eubank share her own thoughts on what Christlike service looks like, how we can minister with greater compassion and direction from the Spirit, and why we need to "replenish" and fill our own souls in order to best serve others. "Each year as the church grows, the need for visiting teachers (ministering sisters) will grow greater. What is their future? They will help combat the loneliness which plagues our world and impersonality of the big cities. They will look after the stranger, the widow, the orphan, the wounded, and distressed, after all sisters with concerned, loving care. ...They will help relieve physical, emotional, and mental suffering. They will aid the sinner and comfort the sorrowing. They will carry a message of gospel love to all our sisters throughout the world. As their warm, tender care spreads its web around the world, they will become a standard to the nations." - Alice C. Smith

One of the most hopeful messages of the gospel of Jesus Christ is that no matter our present circumstances, change and improvement is possible. On today's episode we're joined by Kate Holbrook, the Church's managing historian of women's history and co-editor of "At the Pulpit," to discuss the life and teachings of a former Relief Society board member named Leone Jacobs (1903-1990) and her 1949 discourse about change beginning small and simple, in our hearts. Tune in to learn about Jacobs' mission to Syria and Palestine in the 1930s, how Kate discovered Leone's carefully-kept everyday journals, and how the Spirit can help us change our hearts and turn outward to see and serve others.

"Covenants—or binding promises between us and Heavenly Father—are essential for our eternal progression. Step by step, he tutors us to become like him by enlisting us in his work. At baptism we covenant to love him with all our hearts and love our sisters and brothers as ourselves. In the temple we further covenant to be obedient, selfless, faithful, honorable, charitable. We covenant to make sacrifices and consecrate all that we have. Forged through priesthood authority, our kept covenants bring blessings to fill our cups to overflowing. How often do you reflect that your covenants reach beyond mortality and connect you to the Divine? Making covenants is the expression of a willing heart; keeping covenants, the expression of a faithful heart." - Bonnie D. Parkin

Sarah Melissa Granger Kimball (1818–1898) spent her life promoting women’s public activity and private “spiritual understanding,” as she explained in this 1895 speech delivered at the National Council of Women. Born in Phelps, New York, she and her family were baptized after her father read the Book of Mormon shortly following its publication. As a young woman, Kimball attended both the School of the Prophets and the Hebrew School in Kirtland, Ohio, at least once. After she and her husband migrated to Utah, Kimball supported her husband, Hiram, and their children by teaching school. Her contemporary Emmeline B. Wells said Kimball “had a good faculty for teaching [and] could simplify lessons and adapt them to the understanding of those whom she instructed. ”These educational endeavors from her youth and early adulthood laid the foundation for her intellectual inquiry later in life.

I am extremely grateful to my mother for teaching me those two things." - Judy Brummer

Smith, who joined Relief Society as a nineteen-year-old in Nauvoo, was president. At that time the board met in the office of the Woman’s Exponent in Salt Lake City’s Templeton Building.

Mother Neyman addressed the meeting on the subject of charity, encouraging all to be forbearing and forgiving, refraining as much as possible from scrutinizing the conduct of our neighbors, remembering always that we are human and must therefore err. It seemed to be the unanimous agreement of the Spirit that presided over the meeting that tattling and slander should die a natural death; that charity, which covereth a multitude of sins, which thinketh no evil, and suffereth long and is kind, should dig the grave and help to bury all the malice and envy which at any time had intruded upon our peace and harmony; and in their stead establish truth and integrity, twin sisters of charity, and then appoint the Mormon creed as a rear guard to repel the first attack of the enemy, that we might be timely warned to avoid an evil wherein our mutual confidence might be destroyed. All this, though not expressed in so many syllables, was in substance the same, no doubt the sentiments of all present. We hope our new members will understand what will be expected of them in this honorable sisterhood: that they will live above reproach and by guarding the doors of their lips keep themselves from censure.

In the same talk Julie also shared, "This beautiful picture of Mt. Moran in the Tetons, photographed by my brother John, reflects a fundamental question that helped shape my academic studies. The actual question is immaterial; what’s important is that I left the serenity of the landscape and asked a question. What question would you ask about this scene? It likely depends on your background and interests. An outdoor enthusiast may ask about climbing routes, a botanist may wonder about the effects of glaciation on conifers, an artist might want to know how to best capture the reflections in the lake, and a geologist may ask about the tectonic forces that built the mountains. The variety and depth of questions that can be asked about a simple mountain scene can be as numerous as the people who view it. The ability and desire to ask questions and search for answers is a uniquely human attribute that is vital to the scientific, artistic, and religious advancements of humanity. We start asking questions at a very young age, as any parent of a precocious three-year-old knows. This suggests that we bring a questioning spirit with us to earth, and that learning by asking and seeking is one reason that our Heavenly Parents have given us the gift of mortal life."

Virginia H. Pearce gave her powerful talk “Prayer: A Small and Simple Thing” at BYU Women’s Conference in April 2018. Join hosts Shalyn Back and Katie Perez as they discuss how this discourse remains relevant today along with special guest Emily Utt of the Church History Department.

Full Discourse https://www.churchhistorianspress.org/at-the-pulpit/part-4/chapter-50

From childhood, Virginia Hinckley Pearce (b. 1945) found that her parents wove prayer and church service into the fabric of their everyday lives. She remembers that when she or one of her siblings was particularly worried over a situation, her father, Gordon B. Hinckley, would say, “Just say your prayers and go to bed. Get up in the morning; it’ll be clearer.” Pearce has applied that good advice; her own restatement of it is, “Just say your prayers, go to bed, and when you get up in the morning, go back to work.” Gathering for family prayer, going to church, and working on church assignments felt like a natural part of her family life, not something on a list she had to complete. She saw that church work for her mother, Marjorie Pay Hinckley, was “part of who she was,” and that she always seemed energized by doing that work, not pressured or annoyed.
