Can you even afford to hire a new employee?
For many small business owners, that seems like an overwhelming question. Employees often seem unaffordable, even when your business really needs the help.
The problem often isn't that hiring help isn't possible, but rather that, as a small-business owner, we're misjudging the affordability of hiring help. It's often your hiring mindset that's standing in the way of the support you need.
In this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast, you'll learn how one slight shift in your mindset can make hiring employees affordable.

Exciting things are happening over here at Growing Your Team. We're getting ready to hire our very first employee!
Even better, we're going to share all the details with you as we navigate this journey.
In this episode of the podcast, you'll learn how we identified that now is the right time to move forward with hiring an employee after only working with contractors before.
It might sound cliche, but it's true. What got you here won't get you there.
As your business grows, you have to adjust how you do things and who supports you if you want to keep it moving in a profitable direction.
But what do you let go of, and what do you add? Who do you hire, and how should you adjust positions from one hire to the next to match your changing business?
This is exactly what Kristen Westcott helps scaling business owners figure out, and in this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast, she's sharing her best tips.
Have you heard of the saying Hire Slowly, Fire Quickly? Is it one that you practice in your small business?
If so, listen up! I hate to break it to you, but many of the business owners I know who follow this practice are doing it all wrong.
In this episode of the podcast, we're digging into what Fire Slowly really means and when you should do it within your small business.
As you expand from a business of one to a business with a team, what kind of team is best for you? A team of freelancers and contractors, a team of employees, or a mixture?
Eve Epstein shares how to determine what type of team is best for you and how to properly use that team so you can feel supported and continue growing your business.
About Eve Epstein: Eve Epstein is the CEO and Co-Founder of SoleVenture. SoleVenture is a single solution that automates business setup and compliance, benefits enrollment, tax estimation, and invoicing for new freelancers.
Eve practiced labor and employment law at the U.S. Department of Labor and the National Treasury Employees Union in Washington, DC and served as in-house counsel in one of the largest privately held Professional Employer Organizations.
From her years of practicing labor and employment law, she saw that the workforce changed. By 2028, more than half of the US workforce will be freelancing. She started SoleVenture to offer self-employed workers the financial security and benefits of traditional employment.

There is a saying that a lot of entrepreneurs shout about hiring a team...Hire Slowly and Fire Quickly. It makes sense, but, 95% of the people I know are applying it wrong.
Most people think, Hiring slowly means not hiring until you 110% need the help.
Anything to save a few bucks right?
And, because you heard that you should hire slowly, you don’t believe you’re at the point where you need to add finding and managing a team member to your plate.
Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but hiring slowly does NOT mean waiting to hire until your business is bursting at the seams.
In this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast you'll learn what hiring slowly really means and how to apply it to your small business.
As a small business owner, not only does your plate feel full, it seems to keep getting heavier. When this happens, one of your options is to outsource some of your work to an assistant.
But, what should you outsource? How do you sort through everything you are currently doing and figure out what makes the most sense to get off your plate and delegate to a team member?
Bianca Smith is sharing her journey and how she is helping business owners make this very important delegation decision.
I was married surrounded by sharks at a wedding venue that was supposed to be a joke. In the end, I guess the joke was on me!
Not only did the whole experience lead to an unforgettable wedding, but it also taught me to be a better leader.
The leadership mistake that I was making before this experience is one that I see too many business owners make when they first start hiring workers for their team. And, it's one that you must learn to avoid if you want to scale your business with the help of a team.
You can add many different positions to your business when you are looking to add support that will help you scale. Virtual Assistants (VA) and Online Business Managers (OBM) are two popular virtual positions.
The question is, which one do you need, and how do you find the right one? Then, how do you keep the relationship productive and healthy for the long-run?
Sandra Booker, the owner of Any Old Task, is sharing all her secrets on how to hire and work with high-producing VAs and OBMs.
Think back to the most recent job interview you conducted. During that interview, what was the goal of the questions you asked? Did you ask questions to uncover skills and abilities, or did you ask questions designed to discover the best storyteller?
You might think that's a silly question for me to ask, but chances are, you unintentionally asked questions that tested candidates' storytelling abilities.
It's time to stop hiring employees for their storytelling abilities and start hiring employees because they are truly the right person for the job. In this episode, you'll learn how.
Do you want to know the secret to great employees? It’s you!
Hiring perfect-fit team members is only step one. Getting them to fully become and stay great employees is 100% dependent on the actions you take once they join your team. You can empower your team members to greatness or be the root cause of their bad habits.
Molly McGrath shares her secrets on the basic things you can do so you’re always happy with employee performance.

Is hiring for passion really the answer? Not exactly. Listen and learn why.

Have you ever considered using an employee trial period when hiring?
Many companies, large and small, do. They use it as a way to test out if the person they want to hire is really a good fit.
The question is, are these trial periods really a good use of your time and money? Or is there a better way to determine if a candidate is the right fit for your open position?
We answer those questions in this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast.
Have you ever thought about how hiring a great team member is like finding the perfect client?
When you take the time to really think about who your perfect client is, you can describe them as clear as day to another person. However, most people struggle to do the same when asked who would be their perfect team member. This often leads to poor hiring decisions.
In this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast, Caroline Chou shares about the team she has grown within her two businesses and how she ensures she's getting the right team member every time she hires - whether for a remote or in-office position.
About Caroline Chou: Caroline Chou is the Design Director of international award-winning interdisciplinary firm OPENUU.
Originally born in Texas, Chou spent her early years shuttling between Taiwan and the U.S. — where she later went on to study architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design. Since Chou and Lim moved their business to Hong Kong in 2012, OPENUU has been awarded ‘Best of Year’ firm by Interior Design Magazine four times; and bagged the prestigious Will Ching Design Prize in April 2019 — awarded for ‘original and excellent’ design by small companies with up to five employees.

In this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast, you'll hear why making hiring decisions based on what-ifs will hurt your business and why you need to hire based on data.

The last thing you want to hear your team members say is that your place of business is a toxic workplace.
Why? Because, when your team members enjoy working for you, they are more likely to produce higher quality work and will stay a part of your team longer.
However, many small business owners make mistakes from the moment they go to hire a new team member that leads to a toxic workplace. These mistakes are common but easily avoidable.

In This Episode, You’ll Hear:

The best way to answer yes to either of these questions is to hire a team you can trust.

Do you know what type of support your business needs?
Not what title your new team members should have or whether they should be an employee or contractor. But do you know if you need to hire a teacher, a strategist, or an executor? Do you know the real difference between the three and what each can do for your business?
If you're like many business owners, you never thought of it.
This leads to hiring mistakes and people investing money in help they don't need or help they are not ready for within their business. Both of which lead to money wasted and often a resistance to hiring again.
In this podcast episode, we discuss the differences between the three types of support you can hire for your business and how each one provides value when utilized at the right time.
In this Episode You'll Hear:
"Your financials are trying to tell you a story. It's your job as a business owner to listen to that story." - Danielle Hayden.
When it comes to trying to decide if it's the right time to hire a team member, do you know if you're in the right financial place? This is a question that stops many business owners from hiring. And that's not because the answer is no. It's because they assume the answer is no and never spend the time to uncover the real answer.
In this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast, Danielle Hayden shares how knowing your numbers will help you make the right hiring decisions in your small business.
About Danielle Hayden:
Danielle Hayden is a reformed corporate CFO (chief financial officer) who is on a mission to help rule-breaking female entrepreneurs understand their numbers so they can gain the confidence needed to create sustainable profits.

One of the top reasons small businesses hire new team members is because there is a lack of time. More hands are needed in the business because you and the team you might have can no longer do it all.
However, many small business owners don't gain time when they hire. Why? Because they replace the time they were once taking doing tasks with overseeing their new team member(s).
The question many small business owners are left asking is, "How can I manage a team without it taking up all my time?"
The good news is, it's possible. In this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast, you'll hear three steps you can take to make sure you save time with each new team member and don't feel like you spend all your time managing.
In this Episode You'll Hear: * How if you're not careful, when you hire your first team members you can fill all the time you gain by delegating tasks to managing your new team. * Why you need to train all team members - even those who are in basic positions or have done the identical role for another business. * How it's easy to start micromanaging your team members even though you don't want to. * Why you can't be afraid of giving your team members authority to make decisions. * How giving your team members dedicated time out of your day saves you time overall.
Next Steps: Are you ready to be happy with your team's performance without having to micromanage their work?
You understand the benefits of having a team, but you’re not sure how to get them to do what you want when and how you want it.
You need the free checklistfor successfully setting and managing expectations.
By using The Ultimate Expectations Checklist your company can thrive, your team members will be happy, and you will see the positive value of each team member without having to spend all your time on management tasks.

Are you ready for your business to make a social impact?
Whether it's supporting the local homeless shelter, supporting organizations that fight for human rights, supporting environmental or animal causes, supporting health-focused research or charities, or more, many business owners want to use a part of their business to drive change and make an impact.
The question is, is your small business to small to start having a social impact? And, how can having a social impact influence your ability to attract the best talent?
In this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast, Tim Salmonson gives you the answers.

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about giving your employees vacation time?
If you're like most small business owners, you think about the expense. You think about the hours and days you will be paying a team member when they are not producing work.
However, did you know that while vacation time benefits the employee, it benefits you and your business too? Your business suffers when you're team members don't take a break from working and the impact could be greater than the cost of paid vacation time.

Did you know that black applicants receive 36% fewer calls for interviews than equally qualified white applicants?
Both are qualified to be invited to interview, but one is knocked out of the running simply because they are assumed black based on their name.
It's not a fun statistic to hear, but it's true. It's also a statistic that has not changed in over 30 years!
As business owners, we have the opportunity to change this statistic. We have an obligation to make hiring choices based on skills and abilities and not based on skin color.
It's not enough to simply not want to discriminate because too often, it happens in the subconscious. You have to consciously take the steps to not discriminate during the hiring process.
The question is, how do you do that? In this episode of the Growing Your Team Podcast, you'll learn three ways to avoid discriminating in the hiring process.

Do you want to know one of the top hiring mistakes small business owners make?
It's not hiring the talent their business really needs. Typically, this is caused by jumping into hiring before organizing internal processes or evaluating where you really need help.
Kristen Diaz is on a mission to stop this behavior. While she supports businesses as a Virtual Assitant, one of her passions is to help small business owners determine what type of help they need before starting the hiring process. If they end up needing her services, great! If not, she knows that she still provided them tremendous value.
In this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast, Kristen is sharing her advice on how to know if it's time to explore hiring your first Virtual Assistant, how to build remote relationships, and more.
About Kristen Diaz: Kristen Diaz was born and partially raised in Albany, New York before moving down to Tampa, Florida. Studious with extracurriculars to boot, Kristen harnessed her talents at Loyola University New Orleans receiving a B.A. in Mass Communications and Marketing. Parting with the Big Easy after graduation, she moved back to Tampa with dreams of climbing the corporate ladder, running a marketing department, and moving to a new location. That clearly did not happen. Being a Type A perfectionist, she grew stressed in a 9-5 grind where anxiety attacks would take form often due to the need to over-perform, balance outside work life, and trying to meet her goals. After realizing that she needed to take control of her anxiety she was able to see her true passion- working for herself and helping others get balanced.
Vow + Vast was born to help solopreneurs grow with better balance. With virtual outsourcing, assistance, and productivity coaching, Kristen believes that with her help, you'll be able to do you- but better.
Kristen's specialties lie in organization, operations, and marketing. A solutions-oriented Virgo, she always favors getting tasks done right with quality and more importantly, on time. Her passions include Marie Kondo-ing messes, creating a better work-life balance for business owners, and working to become fluent in other languages. You can usually find her sending memes to friends in perfectly timed increments of distraction in between periods of extreme productivity.

"But what if something happens and I have to fire an employee?"
Many small business owners have asked this question as they think about expanding their team. While their business is doing well now, they worry about the what-ifs.
What if my current revenue trends don't continue, and I cannot afford an employee?
What if there is a recession/downturn/force closure that impacts my industry, and I have to close my doors or reduce my staff?
What if I later decided to take my business down a different path and it impact who I need on my team?
While these questions show that you care about the people you hire, the reality is, we cannot predict if any of these what-ifs will ever happen. When you make your decisions based on what-ifs, you're making your decisions based on fears and not your business needs.
In this episode of the Growing Your Team Podcast, we are digging into this fear and what you should remember if you find yourself asking these questions when it's time to hire a new team member.

As you start to grow your team, you will notice that there are two types of team members within your business; those who work directly with your customers and those who function behind the scenes. Both are essential to moving your business forward and serving your clients, but the one set gets no external recognition because the customer doesn’t really know they are there.
However, as the business owner, you know that both types of team members are important to your company’s success and that the show cannot go on without either set. The question is, how do you ensure all team members feel valued and motivated?
Peter Masone is very familiar with this problem. From a background in theater and stage music, to 20 years in the construction industry, to now the General Manager of a sports team, the Tampa Bay Cannons, Peter knows how essential the behind-the-scenes team is to the final product. In this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast, Peter shares his tips on how to build a team from the ground up and how to keep all team members feeling like they are essential, no matter their role.

As a business owner, what are your first thoughts when you think of interviews?
If you're like most business owners, one of the first things you think of when going through the process is finding the best candidate for your opening. You think of yourself interviewing others.
However, interviews are a two-way street. Not only is the candidate making an impression on you, but you are also making an impression on the candidate. That first impression will impact whether they later accept a job offer, and what they will tell their network about your company - the good, the bad, and the ugly.
In this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast, Liz M. Lopez shares how to make a good first impression from both a candidate's perspective and an interviewer's perspective. She is also sharing with us how to master video interviews so we can make great hiring decisions even when we can't meet with a candidate face-to-face.

Like many small business owners, you were probably once an employee. And, chances are, you at one point felt undervalued and lost your motivation to keep working hard for your boss.
Many of us have stories about why we left corporate and started our own business. For those of us who left because of a bad manager or leadership, we need to strive for one thing: to be the boss we wish we had. We have a choice about whether we show our team members that they are valued or whether we are the reason they quit.
In this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast, Francesca Deane is sharing her story about what made her want to leave her corporate job and how you can do things better as a small business owner.
About Francesca Deane:
