This one showed that combining turkey amino acid (tryptophan) with probiotics was found to reduce gluten-triggered inflammation and improve the response to a gluten-free diet in people with celiac disease.

Cam recently had his first ever camping experience with a couple of buddies. Despite being a novice, he brought his A-game to this adventure. He became the de-facto chef for the excursion, and in doing so, made this mere camping trip into much more of a high end outing. In fact, Mike introduces the term glamping to Cam and believes that he might just be a full on "Glamper."

After a couple of weeks of special guests talking about the coronavirus we are back today with part 2 of Cam's California adventure. Cam tells us about his journey to Big Bear National Park. As things continue to evolve with COVID-19, we are joined by world renowned celiac expert Dr. Peter Green, Professor of Clinical Medicine and Director of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University in New York City. Dr. Green illuminates us about the need for further studies to really understand how those with celiac disease will be affected by this virus and is currently setting up an international database to forward his research.

We are so excited that the Gluten in Medicine Disclosure Act was introduced as a Bill in Congress at the end of 2019. It been a long time coming and we hope it becomes a law soon! We also speculate on celiac diagnosis rates. Is it time for some of the numbers related to celiac diagnosis to be updated? Is it time for a "celiac census?"
General Mills recently put out feelers on a new line of products that they term "gluten friendly." These products start with gluten free ingredients, but would not necessarily be made on gluten free lines or made in gluten free facilities. We weigh in on this and also talk about the downside of the term "gluten friendly" as it is being used for restaurants and how we feel it negatively impacts our community.
New takeaways have been published pertaining to the 2018 Doggie Bag Study. This study was the first of its kind as it tested actual samples from the participant's food and then studied the reaction that the food had on each of the subjects (all with celiac disease). The major finding from this study is that it might, sadly, be impossible to live completely gluten free.

In an interesting preliminary study, some Australian scientists may have found a link between gluten proteins and some proteins found in bacteria. Might these bacteria actually mimic gluten and lead to the development of celiac disease? Mike and Cam also look at a study that is attempting to set safe guidelines in schools for celiac children handling things like Play-Doh, dry pasta and paper mache.

In the last week or so the celiac world has been buzzing with the news of a potential groundbreaking new celiac disease treatment that could be available soon. In a small phase 2a study, this nanoparticle being called CNP-101/Tak-101, enters the body like a "Trojan Horse" that might be able to prevent the body from triggering an immune reaction in the body. While the study is small, this has so much potential to change not only the lives of those of us with celiac disease, but hopefully can lead to a breakthrough in treatment of other autoimmune diseases.
It has been a while since we read a published piece that has set us off. This week Mike and Cam take a dive into a New York Post article that completely trivializes any health benefits of the gluten free diet. They give a lot of weight to a new study that was done on a very small scale.
A new, controversial study, indicates that there might not be as large a risk of cross contamination for those of us with celiac disease. The study includes findings that cross contact including the use of a separate toaster to toast gluten free bread might not actually be needed. Mike and Cam are more than a little skeptical as they explore the findings.
Have you ever fantasized about taking a sabbatical and traveling the globe for 6 months? Our guest, Jennifer Fitzpatrick, whose blog is "The Nomadic Fitzpatricks," decided to do just that. She and her husband took what they called a "gap year" and grabbed their backpacks to see the world! Jen didn't let her celiac slow her down! She shares some of the greatest, as well as most challenging, locations from her amazing journey.

We love all the new studies coming out and discuss two in particular on the podcast. The first study indicates that folks with first degree relatives may may have a much larger chance of developing celiac disease. The second study shows that there could be a higher incidence of celiac in children who consume more gluten when they are young.

Priyanka, currently in medical school, shares her challenges growing up with mostly asymptomatic celiac disease in a family with a celiac brother and non-celiac sister, leading to some unique challenges. Ironically, Priyanka's mother, Dr. Ritu Verma, happens to be one of the top pediatric gastroenterologists in the world. Priyanka illuminates us as to how celiac disease is being taught now (still not great), and her efforts to help educate her fellow medical students about celiac and other chronic health conditions.
Mike has made two trips to Madison, Wisconsin this summer. The second was with the great crew from GIG Chicago. After finding that Nexvax2 did not provide, "meaningful protection from gluten exposure when compared with placebo," ImmusanT pulled the plug on their trial. In the end, we are optimistic that more good will come out of this down the line, and we talk about why trials like these are so important to help us hopefully find a cure for celiac disease.

In 1945 Dr. Douglas Arnold believed that a diet consisting manly of bananas was the cure for celiac disease. Obviously, later in life when gluten was reintroduced, these patients became ill again. Mike and Cam take a deep dive into the "banana diet." In addition they look at a new study that shows that children who are diagnosed with CD tend to bounce back more quickly than adults.

24 hours after the news comes out that Columbia University has developed a test for non-celiac gluten sensitivity (called wheat sensitivity in the test), Mike and Cam discuss. They also talk about their hopes for a celiac test for people who have already gone off gluten. To this point, they take a deeper look at the so called "gluten challenge,"some of the issues with it, and the fact that the medical community can't come to an agreement about how to actually administer the gluten challenge.
