In this space, we’re invited to dig through where we’ve been handed beliefs about ourselves, God and others, to wonder if those beliefs are current, and to renovate our inner worlds to get more authentic, more current, and more true to ourselves. THIS process is the work of experiencing healing and in turn… transforming the world.
We are always learning about what it means to be human. As human beings, we look within and without to find our way on our individual and collective journeys. Through life, loss and everything between, we are continually constructing and deconstructing the scaffolding of what we believe about ourselves, about people, about this world, and about the Divinity that animates it all.
Hosted and produced by Spiritual Director + Artist, Carin Huebner, “The Ripening” is a show about wondering at existence and connection with the Divine, self, and others. Carin looks at what it means to be a human being, how to unpack ourselves in order to experience healing and gain a more true experience of our authentic selves (and the One beyond it all). LL Kirchner, an award-winning screenwriter, author, and creative, is with us today and shares her transformative personal journey which she narrates vividly in her memoirs. Reflecting on her experiences, she discusses her engagement in various therapeutic and healing practices, including meditation, storytelling, and yoga. LL brings to light the importance of understanding one's unique needs when approaching different methodologies for healing and personal transformation. LL also shares the joy of adopting an enquiring, an open-minded attitude in life, especially as a creative. Her new book, 'Blissful Thinking: A Memoir of Overcoming the Wellness Revolution', delves into her unconventional healing journey. Last week in group spiritual direction, I had a client that had discovered the asshole-inadequacy paradigm coming up in their lives and I realized that it’s time to share the paradigm with all of you. I started discovering this paradigm, myself, a few years ago. I see it come up with clients when breaking down who and how they are in social situations. When we begin wondering at who we are in our true selves, our capital S self, then we begin seeing how we don’t act out of that self in social situations. It’s the place where it’s easiest to see, so we can really gravitate there. We begin seeing how we’re kind of an asshole, but it doesn’t make sense in relation to our inner dialog that’s all about inadequacy.
Today I’m explaining what the asshole-inadequacy paradigm is, where it comes from, and how we can start showing up without it.

So many folx have been given the context that they do not belong with or to themselves even—especially in their bodies. Today we’re discussing sex education as a access point to power and agency, and ultimately, healing and liberation.
Dr. Celeste Holbrook is a sex educator, speaker and horse loving Texan who has dedicated her life to helping people experience pleasurable, connective sex through mental and behavioral changes. I spend SO much time and energy looking at human suffering and especially the suffering a lot of us have experienced through toxic and traumatizing religious communities and experiences. I don’t spend a lot of time focusing on beauty. And for me personally in my practical being and life: beauty is the only onramp for hope… so we’re going to name a bunch of beautiful things today and invite wonder around them so that we can access hope together.

I have a special episode today with a special guest in the studio. A few weeks ago one of my clients and I were wondering together around their marriage and how they’re in a different belief space than when they got married. We were also chatting about how when they got married, religious beliefs had a predominant role in their relationship and how they viewed marriage and marriage with this person. Our dialog helped me realize just how much we all process on the beliefs we’re given via the onramp of our relationships with our significant persons.
All of this wondering made me realize what an opportunity we have here. I’m actually married to a licensed professional counselor who specializes in relationships through counseling and coaching.
So a fair warning for you… this episode is going to be a little disclosure-y: I’m interviewing my husband, Jesse Huebner today.
Jesse Huebner is a licensed professional counselor and coach that provides a safe and supportive space for you to talk. Jesse acts as a sounding board and employs emotionally focused therapy, problem focused therapy, and a gestalt perspective to help individuals and couples gain self-awareness, clarify goals, achieve their development objectives, and unlock their potential. Someone asked me recently how I’ve gotten to where I am… a Spiritual Director for those in deconstruction and deconditioning. You may be surprised I was a little like… what? I had a simultaneous feeling of knowing the exact story and also having no idea. I hadn’t asked in a while and it’s probably a good question to revisit every now and again. BUT I’m weary to be too self-indulgent here… this won’t just be a story about me… we’ll take it broader too.

A friend asked me the other day my own definition of deconstruction. I try to stay out of church Christian culture wars at all and any costs, but this is a topic that I’m extremely passionate about. So many Christian pastors with large followings and platforms are speaking very negatively about deconstruction and deconstructing folx and it’s creating a stir and a divide in communities and culture.
Culture and humans make it tricky… it’s all such new terminology and who can use it and how is all becoming a question.
The thing I want to shout from rooftops is: DECONSTRUCTION IS NOT BAD… THOSE DECONSTRUCTING ARE NOT BAD.

Y’all, I’m on a big journey of authentic becoming. What I wanted to offer today was that authenticity matters in healing and in going public. If you’re finding it challenging to go or maintain being public, it may be because of a wrestle with how and where and to what degree you’re allowed to be authentic in public and all the narratives and voices that come up around all of that.
We’ve all been conditioned to believe certain things about going and being public and… let’s be real… about going and being a freaking human.
I want to offer a little bit of my own journey with growing in authenticity. It’s not perfect and it’s not a picture of a finished journey or a battle won… I’m in it every day too.
It takes a lot of courage to be honest enough with yourself and honest enough with others to be authentic.

Today, my current client, McKenzie Watson-Fore, and I are talking all about spiritual direction in deconstruction. We chat about not fitting into religious labels and opening spiritually beyond given religious contexts. We talk about how spiritual direction intersects the creative processes of writing and painting, and McKenzie’s path toward and in spiritual direction with me. We also admire together the power of the Spiritual Direction space to be truly heard, especially after so many contexts where being heard was what was promised, but never delivered.
This interview and episode is shared, of course, with permission from McKenzie. We made certain that everything was in place that needed to be in place for her sharing to be equitable and honoring. I need to figure out what I believe.
I need to be able to represent myself as well as I possibly can, stop betraying myself in family situations, and be able to tell them where I land on everything in a way that is gentle and kind that they’ll be able to grasp.
I need to know for myself where I land.
Am I even a Christian anymore?
I don’t belong with church community, but don’t belong anywhere else. What do I believe?
These are all reasons people start seeing me for Spiritual Direction. Let me just make this clear: there’s no shame and no flaw in people thinking these things… it makes absolute perfect sense. AND you know what? What folx come to me for compared to what we end up working on is TOTALLY different.
Spoiler alert: you know what they’re actually coming to me for? FREEDOM.

Something I’ve been grappling with for the last few years is how many friendships and really dear and amazing people I didn’t get close with in the name of being a good Christian. We were trained to be judgy and not authentic. I missed out on a lot of things in my life, but I am dedicated to living loved now and I’m fully dedicated to facilitating access to living loved and fully accepted to as many others as possible.

Have you been told you’re inherently bad? And you don’t really believe it for anyone but yourself… but like you can get around it? I’ve found that with clients it’s often the spaces of belief that define who we are at an elemental level that live on and are the hardest to deconstruct. I believe that you are inherently good. You have goodness in you.

Something we learn to do early on is offloading our identity to others. On this episode, I talk about what that is, how it shows up in our daily lives, and how when we’re in deconstruction and doing any kind of identity work, the temptation to offload our identities comes up again and again. We can be the authority on our own identities… even though that’s super challenging and often met with challenge.

I work with a lot of individuals who have come to me because they want to hone their inner ear, they want to learn to listen to themselves, to the great beyond, to God/the Divine again OR for the first time. They have a tiny tiny belief deep in the back store room somewhere that they have the agency and authority to hear, but there’s a lot blocking the process. On this episode, I’ll name a lot of the things that keep us doubting, and how to start moving more freely.
We are beings… we are physical beings and spiritual beings and all the things beings. One part of our being isn’t necessarily more important than any other and they all involve and feed off of one another… we’re an ecosystem, not a conglomeration of organized and compartmentalized portions. Illusion of control seems like a ripe topic for pre-2020 life, but drawing awareness to what’s really happening when we lose our sense of control is SO important. What do you feel you’ve lost control of? What functional beliefs are you seeing pop up that are not aligned with your held beliefs about yourself, the Divine, or others? What do you have control over?

I feel this space has been a good and true space, and I think that’s great. I also think it could be so so so much more. And in the name of true transformation, I’m transforming this space to be in better alignment with what I think the Divine wishes it to be. Wondering around where things come from and how people (my past self included) have devalued tools for transformation because they didn't originate within Christianity.
I made a list in early 2019 of the biggest and best things I learned through directing others in the spiritual direction space in 2018. You may not be surprised… they’re really big and really beautiful, and really wonderful—and I’m grateful to be in the space.

Jesse and I had a little bit of an internet communication fail today. We’re always taken aback by what jerks people can be behind a computer screen. We’re also surprised by how easily we can be tempted to loose our lips and inner dialog through our fiery fingertips.
Who is Spiritual Direction for? The panel takes on the questions of spiritual background, personality type, seasons of life, and gender while discussing who Spiritual Direction is for. The cheater answer is… we think it’s for everyone, but we chat around who we find ourselves working with most. There’s a bonus contemplative space the last 7 minutes of the recording.
The sobering thought for me was that age-old adage: you never know what tomorrow brings.
Resiliency is on my mind a lot these day. It’s the backbone of survival. Without resiliency, we die or we end ourselves.
