“I don’t have time for hobbies. At the end of the day, I treat my job as a hobby. It’s something I love doing.” -David BeckhamThis episode of the show, I discuss ways to not get distracted while trying to find a new hobby. Don’t copy hobbies from people you admire, rather think back to what you had fun doing with you were young. Plus a little bonus challenge to chew on. Thanks for listening.

“To the spread of our trade in peace and the defense of our flag in war a great and prosperous merchant marine is indispensable. We should have ships of our own and seamen of our own to convey our goods to neutral markets, and in case of need, to reinforce our battle line.” -President Theodore Roosevelt In this episode of the show, I delve into the weeds of international shipping and commerce with Michael Gordon-Tennant. Mike is one of my closest friends going back to 2007 when we met in the local Baltimore swing dancing scene.  Swing DANCE, not swing… perve, get your mind out of the gutter!

ANYWAY…

I’ve been a bit hot and bothered with the delayed recovery in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria in 2017. Lots of smart people who’s podcasts I listen to say a big part of this is the obscure thing called “The Jones Act,” which, if you listen to the shows I’ve heard…”is a huge part of the problem with the recovery as it makes the cost of goods for the recovery significantly more expensive.” As a one of the mariners on these container ships for the last 12+ years, Mike has a great take on it and makes a great argument both for keeping it in place, and common sense ways around its restrictions in times of emergency like with Puerto Rico.

This one was fun! Mike’s a stitch, and you will love this one.

Thanks for listening.

“Relationships sink when they have too many passengers.” -Unknown Never forget where your relationship came from. How it started, and what made you happy then. That stuff will still work today… You just need to remember and talk about it. Thanks for listening!

“It’s not practicing medicine ethically if you don’t explain to a patient what’s happening to her.” -Jamie Hatcher In today’s show, I chat with Jamie Hatcher, Certified Nurse Midwife, and the person that helped deliver our youngest daughter, Ada. Midwifery, as it’s referred to, had a MASSIVELY bad wrap here in the good ol’ US of A, and I wanted to talk to someone I know and trust in that world to come on and debunk some of the myths about it.

I was very skeptical about my wife using the services of a midwife with our first daughter as I had all the same mental images most people have… crunchy old ladies wearing beads tying my wife’s wrists to the sturdiest branch of an oak tree while giving birth standing upright, and a lookout shooting blow darts at the doctor who dared approach to check my wife’s heart rate!  And after working with them both times, I was TOTALLY correct!

I’M KIDDING! It was the best, safest, and most positive experience possible for both my wife (for whom it really mattered) and me. We get into the weeds with this one, but worth it if you have never learned about what a midwife really is, how they function within the US healthcare system, and maybe have some appropriate decisions to be made in your future, sooner or later.  Jamie is a sweetheart who took wonderful care of us, so I really hope you enjoy this conversation.  Thanks for listening!

This will be a topic area I hit regularly from now on as I’ve seen a dramatic personal improvement since having a recent change in my personal mindset.  Thanks for listening!

“History doesn’t provide answers. It helps you ask better questions.” -John D. Hosler, Ph.D Today’s show is with https://twitter.com/medievalist1 (John D. Hosler, Ph.D.) Professor of European History and expert in medieval warfare at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth. His most recent book, https://amzn.to/2MBvVDZ (The Siege of Acre), flew off the shelves in Europe after it’s release this past spring. We talk about this book, his first published work easily accessible for mass market of non-historians like myself, and many of you, I’m sure. We talk about the siege itself, the process of writing for an academic audience versus a public audience, and who is ultimately responsible for conveying information of historical importance to the masses.  Is it historians job to translate or is it the audiences job to educate themselves? Maybe we find out today!

Thanks for listening to the show! I appreciate you very much!

In today’s show, I riff on the idea of consulting work as a separate or just new way to make a living, focusing on the type of consulting that DOESN’T make you a Charlatan! Consulting has had a bad reputation for a while, falling somewhere on the sliding scale between already mentioned Charlatan down to a fancier name for being unemployed. This doesn’t have to be true. The key? STAY IN YOUR LANE!

This conversation ran more than two hours, so I am releasing it in two episodes, http://smallmoves.co/068-mike-gimbel-1/ (first half is last week), and this is the conclusion. We also discuss his long-time experience with an organization called https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synanon (Synanon), a drug rehabilitation center that later became an “alternative community,” later known as a cult called The Church of Synanon in the 1970s that was shut down in 1991 due to various illegal activities.

This week, we discuss his life since being in recovery and what has been his life’s work since then, which is to help addicts get clean through a variety of government and non-government roles spanning the last three decades. We discuss the plans he suggests to combat the current opioid epidemic and his feelings on the liberalization of drug laws both in Maryland and nationwide.

“If we can get more comfortable talking about the things we all experience, then we can all experience them together.” -Rachel Wright

A former know-it-all marries a former asshole and they become a successful relationship and sex therapy team!

Kind of hard not to just drop the mic there… but you should probably know more.

In today’s show, I chat with https://twitter.com/thewrightrachel (Rachel) and https://twitter.com/thewrightkyle (Kyle Wright) from https://wrightwellnesscenter.com/ (Wright Wellness Center). I was introduced to them by a former guest of the show, http://lisacarpenter.ca/ (Lisa Carpenter), who was on http://smallmoves.co/052-lisa-carpenter/ (episode 52 of the show). They met each other in their early twenties while in previous careers. Now, they jointly run a practice where they bridge the gap between a self-help book and a therapist’s couch.

We discuss the modern day in relationships and how today’s political discourse has negatively effected a full generations ability to relate and build trusting and loving relationships. This episode had all parties not holding back with their language, so tiny humans should probably skip this one. This was a great chat with an annoyingly awesome couple!

“Comfort is the enemy of great. You get comfortable and good, which is different from being full and joyful and amazing.” -Azul Terronez

In this episode of the show, Jason chats with return guest, http://coachazul.com/ (Azul Terronez) with his husband, Steve Vannoy. For those that have been with me since the early days, you’ll remember that Azul was the guest in http://smallmoves.co/010-azul-terronez/ (episode 10) of the show where we discussed his business of coaching people through the process of authoring a book. During that conversation, it came up that Azul and his family travel around the globe, full-time, children included. This topic is the main focus of today’s chat. We cover a lot of ground in this show and I had a blast with it. http://www.smallmoves.co/community (Let me know what you think!)

Remember that Azul had a TEDx talk in February 2017. Check it out!

“Make money to earn freedom so that you can enjoy your life.” -Austin Peek In today’s show, I chat with https://twitter.com/acpeek?lang=en (Austin Peek), a commercial real estate lender and host of the https://millionaire-interviews.com/ (Millionaire Interviews). Austin is 32 and the owner of http://riverstonerecap.com/ (Riverstone RECAP), a commercial real estate lending company. Though still involved in that business, his biggest focus for the last year has been to create and launch his podcast, called Millionaire Interviews. He has a Master in Commercial Real Estate, and lives in Jacksonville, FL.

Austin and I met through a group called Podcasters Paradise, a group created by https://twitter.com/johnleedumas (John Lee Dumas) of a the https://www.eofire.com/ (Entrepreneurs on Fire Podcast), one of the longest running and most popular business interview podcasts on the planet.

Austin has had a shocking level of success in getting his ideal guests lined up for his show prior to launch with a level of success that was unbelievable.  His systems that he uses for creating and producing his show can be applied to any business, and I found it incredibly helpful in the production of my show ever since we talked.  As the conversation progressed, it came out that Austin is is a serious spend-thrift, and has some amazing advice for cutting the costs in your life. Also how the value of patience when making purchases translates to savings in the extreme.

This was a highly tactical conversation that involves a lot of suggested web sites, services, and reading so have a pen and paper (if you’re in to that kind of thing!) and get ready to take notes!

Austin’s list of top sites to save money:

–https://swappa.com/ (Swappa.com) for finding inexpensive, used electronics of all types

“The longer you live, the sooner you’re going to die. It only gets scarier the longer you wait to discuss it.”

In this emotional episode, I chat with https://www.jenhardy.net/ (Jen Hardy), author of the book, https://amzn.to/2HqWblS (The Sick Mom’s Guide to Having Fun Again). Jen is chronically ill and is a self-described “collector of eclectic diseases and mystifier of physicians.”  She’s a mother of 7 children ranging in age from 6-28, and the wife of a retired Army soldier. Jen has had a meandering trip through the American healthcare industry that will boggle the mind and show the systemic problem that this system has inherent in its bias towards fixing problems rather than maintaining health and promoting well-being for patients.

This episode was dark at times, and a very rewarding conversation.  I hope you enjoy it, and do please give Jen’s blog, https://www.jenhardy.net/blog/ (The Chronically Positive Mom), a read as well. I appreciate you for listening.  Thank you!

In this episode of the show, Jason chats with a good friend, Jon Kirsch. Jon is a librarian in South Carolina with both strong and reasoned political leanings; two traits sadly rarely found in combination in modern times on the political landscape. Jason met Jon about seven years ago as a friend of a friend of his new girlfriend (now wife, Carrie) at a New Years Eve party which manifested in a political discussion that spanned nearly six hours in the middle of a party (those party animals!)

Jon recently moved from the public library system to a private college library system, exposing him to an inside perspective of the recent political activist climate in our universities today. Jon and Jason discuss several of the cultural movements happening today, and some of the hypocrisy associated with them… So, you know, no controversy in this one at all!

As a side note for those of you that have listened to the show for a while, Jon is the person that connecting with with both http://smallmoves.co/023-gail-mcabee/ (Gail McAbee) and http://smallmoves.co/030-nate-butkus/ (Nate Butkus), former guests of the show on episodes 23 and 30, respectively. In this short solo show, Jason talks about death. Specifically TALKING about death with the people in your life. Both them and you.  Hate to break it to you, but you’re going to die. Statistically, maybe this afternoon. Are you squared away?  Mentally, financially, logistically… What would happen to your spouse, your parents, your kids, and most importantly YOU STUFF (see sarcasm on page 31) when you die?

We hate talking about it, but we need to! Today is just a bit of a wake up call on this, as well and some strategies I’ve used to break the ice and talk about this in a way that’s not terrifying or daunting in any way… within reason.

Thanks for listening! I appreciate you.

“That has now become our target… To convince the world to plant one trillion trees. Doing so would consume 25% of the global carbon emissions.” -Felix Finkbeiner

(Annoyingly Amazing Young People) Series, Jason chats with Felix Finkbeiner, Founder of https://www.plant-for-the-planet.org/en/home (Plant For The Planet), a youth-led international organization tasked with the goal of planting one trillion (yes, TRILLION!!!!!!!!!!!!!) new trees throughout specific hotspot areas around the globe.  The organization began with a school project with he was 9 years old. He’s now 20 years old, attending university, and actively managing the organization which has, to date, planted 15,206,634,235 trees as of the airing of this show. For those who are numerically deficient… YES, that’s over 15 billions trees planted so far! I’ll assume many people reading this were slightly less effective at implementing your 9 year old dreams as Felix has been.

Jason makes a point to play devil’s advocate and drill into many of the activities and practices of Plant For The Planet, and Felix shows tremendous thoughtfulness in having planned things out to the most minute detail. This organization is SHOCKINGLY efficient and effective.

First of all, I’m very sorry that I did not release this episode on Friday, as promised. The Herzberger Family took delivery of our full-time “RV house” (as the 3 year old calls it!) and have been running around mad trying to get everything done. This delay caused me to rethink what I was going to talk to you about today and change to how to fit in ways to get fit in our busy lives.

In today’s show, I talk about a thought process to getting in better shape using the time and financial assets available. Sometimes we hold up certain forms of fitness on a pedestal, and consciously or unconsciously write off ANY form of fitness if we can’t achieve what’s on the pedestal. The day I dismissed this thought process was the day I started the longest, and most consistent workout routine of my life, post high school sports.

Courtney delves into several scenarios for the types of individual plans she’s used with great success with her clients. First off… Sorry for the small rant today! In this episode, I talk about lots of “top-of-mind” stuff, focused on the hobbies I and many people have played with in the past, and what the inevitable result has been of these failed hobbies.  We also chat about a better way to filter the hobbies we have now and the ones that we’re interested in trying in the future. No judgement of which are better or worse, just a different way of choosing things that will cut down on the sunk cost of trying different stuff out.

Personal aside, for those that have been following along in my families saga of decluttering/downsizing/etc… WE BOUGHT OUR RV!!!  I’ll be moved in by mid-April! I’m terrified/exhilarated! In today’s episode, Jason talks about how and why nearly boundless open communication is critical to making good relationships (business and personal) work.  No expert by any stretch, but he and his wife make a point to have literally no bounds for their communication and discusses the fruits of that policy.

Honest communication is the seed to all long-term functional relationships. Now finish reading, and go chat with somebody about something you haven’t talk about before. (Maybe tell your friend to throw away those jeans or burn that tie! They’ll thank you later.)

“If you’re thinking about picking up a side hustle, find one you wouldn’t mind doing full-time… Otherwise, you’ll end up giving up because you hate it, long before it’s had time to bare fruit.”

In today’s show, talking about finding new ways to punch up your income streams, I talk about an approach to finding a side hustle that fits with what you actually like doing. Otherwise, you’ll end up hating it for one reason or another, get bored, and give up.

I discuss how what started as a small time, temporary side gig ended up being a large and primary source of income for me for the last seven years and what I’m working on right now on a trial basis to help punch up my own income with a new side hustle(s) that I’m working on.

Bottomline… Find a way to make extra money. Don’t hate how you do this. Maybe it will stick around long enough to sustain you down the road!

In this episode of the Small Moves Podcast, Jason talks about an area of personal financial management that his family has dug into a lot… living “tiny” without the need to first get rich.

Finding ways to cut costs in your budget is one of the age old struggles of most people. We skip dinners, drinks, brown bag it for lunch, get less frequent hair cuts, cheaper clothes… it’s endless. But how many of us ever take a hard look at the cost of the home they live in and ALL of it’s ancillary expenses?

Jason details the evaluation process he and his wife used to determine that they could indeed live in a tiny home/RV full-time. Something not always possible for everyone. He gives you the strategy to evaluate your housing cost and, more eye-opening, housing usage.

“I shall, in due time, be a Poet.” –  Ada Lovelace (my second daughter’s namesake)

In this episode of the Small Moves Podcast, I explore a new format for the show where now we will releasing the longer form interviews that you are used to every Tuesday. Starting today, on Fridays, I will be releasing a new format where I do not have any guests on the show and I simply dive deep into a product, service, or strategy that I’ve either experimented with or have learned about as it applies to the five areas if life that I like to hit on here at Small Moves. Those being Health, Personal Finance, Income, Relationships, and Personal Interests.

The interviews I’ve been having, albeit AMAZING, have not been hitting all these areas with balance, so I’ll be using the Friday shows to provide regular returns to each of these topics in a condensed, tactical way.

To be honest, I was super nervous putting this show out as it’s my first time releasing a show without a guest and the total focus was on me.  Self-conscious, anyone?!?!?!?!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this show. We delve into a service called https://onceamonthmeals.com/ (Once A Month Meals).  It’s a program my wife and I got into about 6 months ago and it has been a GODSEND! Listen to hear the details. One of my previous guests, https://twitter.com/CookingCaveman (George Bryant) of the https://civilizedcavemancooking.com/ (Civilized Caveman Cooking), was http://smallmoves.co/009-george-bryant/ (interviewed in Episode 9 )of the show and his recipes are available through this service as well.  We’ve tried them.  They are crazy amazing!

Thanks for listening and baring with me through the new format.  Let me know what you think on https://twitter.com/jasonherzberger (Twitter) or https://www.facebook.com/smallmovesbigprogress/ (Facebook).

In this episode of the Small Moves Podcast, Jason invites http://coachazul.com/ (Author Coach Azul Terronez) to the show.

Azul helps authors who don’t know how to express their message in book form, allowing them to break down the effort one step at a time. Azul also gave a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrU6YJle6Q4 (TEDx talk in Santo Domingo in 2016).  Check it out, it was powerful!

Azul’s rise to authorship and coaching came from several years of small, simple steps in the direction of his interest. Azul had formerly been a writing teacher in the public school system, who developed a reputation for doing things differently to achieve new and better results. This same quality marked him when becoming a principle of a failing middle school – using his unique ability of thinking differently to turn it around in under 2 years.

Azul’s major turning point came when he decided to ‘Leap into the Fire,’ doing whatever it took to get his book written. Azul signed up for an intimate, 20-person business coaching event with https://www.smartpassiveincome.com/ (Pat Flynn) & http://www.chrisducker.com/ (Chris Ducker) without having a business. Instead, he took the opportunity to write his entire book in under 30 days (a massive undertaking by anyone’s standard!), something that allowed him to stand out during the event. In this episode of The Small Moves Podcast, I interview George Bryant: Best-Selling Author, Marketing Adviser, and Founder of https://civilizedcavemancooking.com/ (Civilized Caveman Cooking).

Instead of discussing George’s numerous projects, I take a deep dive into George’s perspective and mindset – fleshing out the framework that has allowed for his success through thick and thin.

George describes growing up in an abusive household, nearly losing his legs while an active duty serviceman, and many other painful experiences that inevitably strengthen him every day, allowing him to impact literally millions of people.

Show highlights and timestamps: [11:26] – What Paleo is, and how George decided to go with Paleo, versus other diets [15:45] – How George was able to determine he had celiac disease [22:36] – Jason & George extensively discusses Meditation, and how different methods of meditation have shaped their day-to-day lives [36:04] – George’s story behind his PTSD, and how his service dog helps interrupt night terrors [47:20] – Where George’s “Why” comes from, and the steps he’s taken to create it.

In this episode, George tells us about the book that exposed him to paleo for the first time, http://amzn.to/2h2bZfF (The Paleo Solution), by Robb Wolf. We discuss his own book, http://amzn.to/2y0plDQ (The Paleo Kitchen). And the author that first got him thinking about how diet could change everything else in his life, http://www.tim.blog (Tim Ferriss) of http://amzn.to/2xZkzGF (The Four Hour Work Week), http://amzn.to/2h1zpSr (Four Hour Body), http://amzn.to/2yIKUpz (Four Hour Chef), http://amzn.to/2h3z5CJ (Tools of Titans), and his newest book, http://amzn.to/2y11IuL (Tribe of Mentors). (I’m a huge Tim Ferriss fan, sorry, needed to geek out on his books! I digress…)

George has an incredible story that everyone needs to hear and needs to think about how it applies to their own life! If you ever feel you’re lacking in motivation, remember this man’s story… and just GET AFTER IT!

Thanks for reading.  I appreciate you!

YOU GOT THIS!

Thank you, everybody for tuning in to the Small Moves Podcast!

This week, I had a great conversation with Dan Gaskell, a tennis coach from Tyler, Texas,  who was prompted into the game by a $1.00 flea market tennis racket that his mom bought him 46 years ago.

We talk about how tennis is a great game for a range of ages, all the way up to seniors. He reviews his experience as a private tennis coach, a high school the a college coach. He’s now semi-retired and focuses on his tennis podcast and trading stocks (http://smallmoves.co/006-russell-comer/ (similar to Russ Comer, subject of Episode 6 of the show)).

Dan and his wife decided to sell everything and move to Costa Rica in 2015. He lived in Grecia, right in the center of the country. They lived there for over a year and had one of most amazing experiences of their lives!

I learned a lot with this show. Tennis is a sport that is foreign to me, and Dan did a great job explaining both the basics for a novice like me, as well as got into the weeds with how the scoring system works in tennis. It was really great and I hope you get something out of it too.

Dan’s show is called the http://www.tennisshortspodcast.com/ (Tennis Shorts Podcast). Everyone has their own challenges! It’s just that some people choose which challenge they want, while others take what’s thrown at them!

Today I interviewed one of my and my http://smallmoves.co/001-carrie-paxton/ (wife’s) closest friends, Arvind Budhram. I can’t think of anyone else in my life who has undergone such a dramatic change in their life in a shorter time than Arvind has, so today’s show is something of a case study on how to take on new challenges in a smart and effective way.

He is a software developer by trade. Grew up in Yonkers, NY, just outside of Manhattan, and recently moved to https://www.austintexas.org/visit/ (Austin, TX). He made the shift from typical college grad of gaming, drinking, and generally making bad choices (See: everyone in the world who lands a desk job right out of college and makes more money than they should in their 20’s for reference), to someone who is in better shape than most normal people you’ll come across. He skis, works out more regularly than the average Joe, eats/drinks/sleeps right, and seeks out work opportunities that foster this healthy lifestyle, rather than building a lifestyle around the job he happens to have landed!

Arvind reads a lot of books that influence his relatively new experimental mindset; http://amzn.to/2xJfXUJ (Sapiens), http://amzn.to/2fcCDVK (The Third Chimpanzee), and http://amzn.to/2y7FrHA (The Pleasure Trap) just to name a few we discuss. These books, among others, (not to mention the documentary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAnCOHCVjyU (Supersize Me)) helped him to craft a personal strategy he calls a 30 Day Challenge. As creative as that name may be… it’s so simple in its implementation that anyone reading this can do it starting today. Basically, if you want to do anything (fill in the blank at your own leisure), commit to challenge yourself to do it for 30 days.  Aaaaaaand, GO!

-Eating vegan? 30 days, Go! Keep notes and evaluate after.

-Take up yoga? 30 days, Go! See how you feel after 30 days. Don’t like it, stop.

-Start saving a fixed amount of money for retirement… 30 days, Go! See if your normal activities were badly affected or not.  IF not, keep rolling!

Structuring things as a 30 Day Challenge, you have a known stopping point, so to help alleviate the fear of “Oh God, This is never going to end!”

Arvind also talked about the importance of joining/creating a “crew” or “tribe” to go along with in these goals. A similar point was made by my guest in http://smallmoves.co/004-cory-smith/ (episode 4, Cory Smith), in that those people looking to train for running in an event have a significantly higher percentage of sticking to their training.

This was a great conversation with a good friend who is up on the the latest research and science behind health and psychology and just has one of the greatest takes on life as anyone I’ve met. We discussed the researchers that he’s followed in the area of health and fasting, http://www.healthpromoting.com/clinic-services/staff/alan-goldhamer-dc (Dr. Alan Goldhamer), author of http://amzn.to/2y7FrHA (The Pleasure Trap), and https://intensivedietarymanagement.com/theory/ (Dr. Jason Fung), author of http://amzn.to/2fdFfCI (The Obesity Code). We also briefly discussed the research regarding ketogenic diet as applied to cancer treatment by http://eatingacademy.com/dr-peter-attia (Dr. Peter Attia) and https://twitter.com/DominicDAgosti2 (Dr. Dominic D’Agostino). You’ll be glad you came across him, as I very much am!  All the links to everything we talked about today including resources, books, links to the profiles of the researchers we discussed are all below. As always, I appreciate you taking the time to listen.  Don’t forget to click subscribe and review the show in iTunes, Google Play, or Stitcher.  Those reviews help other listeners find the...

(See my funny play on words in the title… “would ‘trade’ anything for this.”  haha, get it?!… I’m funny) . MOVING ON….

This episode features a good friend of mine, Russell Comer!  Russ is a full time government contractor for D.O.D., and his job description there seems to fall into the “I’ll tell you but then I’ll have to kill you” category. Being as you are reading these notes after our interview, you can assume this wasn’t the topic of conversation during our interview….

Or maybe it was, and I’m not really here… Maybe the CIA is writing this… Maybe since I scheduled this show to release a couple weeks after our conversation, I was killed a week ago, and the G-man hit squad forgot to stop the podcast from launch and you are about to hear the super secrets of our Defense Department… I’m going to keep thinking like this until I know I’m safe… But what if I never am… What if I go on and on like this… What if I keep talking in rhetorical questions until you just can’t take it anymore… Or what if… Know what, Let’s reign in that colorful A.D.D. imagination of mine.  I FULLY pledge to you, my audience, that as of this moment, I am not dead due to my conversation with Russell Comer.  (they are making me type this…….help.)

Russ is going to talk to us today about the thing he does as a side hustle outside of the confines of his government work….. stock trading!  Now, if you are just itching to https://tradingtap.com/ (click the link) to his web site and see pictures of him sitting on the hood of his https://www.bugatti.com/home/ (Bugatti), parked in front of his private jet, while “casually” holding a bag of $100 bill toilet paper, while making a point to say like 10 times, “You see all this stuff. I don’t care about any of this stuff. It’s no big deal. I just am showing you all this so you know what’s possible!”…then you are going to be highly disappointed in this interview and should stop reading/listening now.  This is not what Russ is about and not what his style of stock trading is about. And it’s absolutely not behavior or strategy that I want to encourage for listeners of my show.

We briefly discussed the concept of futures trading, which is something I’m completely ignorant about. One of my favorite podcasts, https://www.npr.org/player/embed/541195376/541205907 (Planet Money, put out an episode lately that researched the movie Trading Places, with Eddie Murphy). This is one of my favorite movies, and I still don’t understand futures trading.  But the Planet Money episode was AMAZING! I highly recommend you give it a listen.

As an aside: We talked about the concept of placing stop orders and limit orders when you place your initial trades. http://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/04/022704.asp (Investopedia) has a great explanation of what these things are. When trying to calculate what to set as your stop and limit orders for when purchasing stock, he has a http://calculator.tradingtap.com/ (super cool and very simple calculator on his web site). This calculator follows Russ’s general rule of following a 3-to-1 ratio rule when trading. Simply explained with example: Your account is worth $100,000. You are not allowed to invest more than 25% of your total account value in any one trade, so $25,000 max in any one investment, so no more than 4 active trades happening at any given time. This help keep you focused and not overwhelmed by trading dozens of stocks at a time. You then set the max upside on that trade at a 3% return on TOTAL account value (in this case, $3,000). So, when that investment goes from $25,000 to $28,000, you sell. NO MATTER WHAT’S HAPPENING! DON’T GET GREEDY! Sell, and move on. If the stock still looks great, take the $3,000 win off the...

Today’s guest is Dr. Pam Woodward, of the wonderful world of Chiropractic.

She is a graduate of https://www.life.edu/ (Life University’s) College of Chiropractic in Marietta, GA.  She was valedictorian of her graduating class there, earning Summa Cum Laude Honors and induction into the Pi Tau Delta Chiropractic Honor Society. She was awarded the Learning Theory and Critical Thought Core Proficiency Award by her peers. While at school, she was a tutor in biochemistry and anatomy. Dr. Woodward is a member of the http://icpa4kids.org/ (International Chiropractic Pediatrics Association), which specializes in chiropractic care for pregnant women and children. She is certified in Webster Technique and is working towards her Diploma in Pediatrics through the ICPA. Dr. Woodward is also proficient in Activator, Diversified, and Sacro-Occipital techniques.

I must claim some bias here in that Dr. Pam is my and Carrie’s (see: http://smallmoves.co/001-carrie-paxton/ (wife)) personal chiropractor, and we have been working with her for roughly a year as of the release of this episode.

We discuss a range of topics in this episode, the most important one in my opinion being that there is a large amount of what some call a placebo effect when it comes to those treated by a chiropractor.  Facts, research, history aside… because anyone that knows the history of chiropractic knows it to be decorated with some of the more colorful characters you’ll ever come to meet, here is my summed up view of placebo effect:

New joint relief medication: Patient takes placebo pills.  Starts feeling better. But it’s placebo!!!! Who gives a damn… my knee feels better.

Chiropractor: “They are just snake oil salesman!” “They aren’t actually doing anything to you!” “Oh, its just psychosomatic.” But my sciatic nerve hasn’t flared up in over a year since starting treatment, so… who gives a damn.

Religious faith: “You’re delusional!” “You’re teaching your children a lie!” “GOD IS DEAD!” Meanwhile most with a religious faith are some of the most upstanding members of any community and are in a state of peace with the world and their neighbors more than the average Joe or Jane, in my own personal experience. So agree or disagree with someone’s faith-based choices, as long as they remain kind people, who gives a damn.

Essential oils: “It’s a scent. It’s NOT medicine!” “You just like the smell of it. It’s not actually doing anything for you.”…….Meanwhile you fall asleep easier and (change the oil in question in your diffuser) you feel more energized throughout the day.  Are these effects real or just placebo?  Who gives a damn!

Got off on a tangent there… sorry. I do that. You’ll come to love me for it. Or you won’t. Who gives a damn.

Dr. Pam and I, at one point in the conversation, discussed the large amount of deaths caused in the U.S. by medical mistakes. Here is a http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2016/05/03/476636183/death-certificates-undercount-toll-of-medical-errors (story I found from NPR) that gives some background. So please read before yelling at me.

Now, Dr. Pam shares a lot of great information about the ways to effectively work with a chiropractor. One of the most important ones being how best to screen the practitioners you are considering working with. This is critical information because, being honest, working in a field that doesn’t have the blessing of the N.I.H. (National Institutes of Health) and the billions of dollars of research funding that come with it, people in the chiro field can sometimes play it a bit fast and loose. The N.I.H. did produce a report on the nature of and details of the research currently available regarding chiropractic. I STRONGLY recommend...

Today, we learn if we are fit to run or not!

Today’s guest is Cory Smith, who resides in Santa Barbara, CA.  He holds a personal best of 4:03 in the mile and is a former 2-Time NCAA Division 1 National Championships Qualifier. He is the owner and head coach of  http://www.runyourpersonalbest.com/ (RunYourPersonalBest), an online running coaching site dedicated to helping runners of a stripes hit their next round of goals for their running practice.

Cory is not only a decorated runner in his own right, he’s a wealth of knowledge on the topic.  He’s a contributing writer for http://www.phillymag.com/author/csmith/ (Philadelphia Magazine’s Be Well Philly), a featured product review and reporter with http://www.gearinstitute.com/gear-institute-faculty/cory-smith (Gear Institute), not to mention his own blog.  http://www.runyourpersonalbest.com/single-post/2017/09/12/The-One-Thing-Every-New-Runner-Does-Wrong-Why-Slow-Runs-Matter (Here’s a great post) he recently put up that is very “new-guy” friendly for those of us not hailing from the runner world.

Cory and I delve into the details of why people take up the sport/hobby of running. What shoes are best for beginner vs. advanced runners. People looking to set a goal of running for an event and whether that event is a traditional 5k/marathon type race or a more broad focused event like a Tough Mudder. This episode is a great compliment to http://smallmoves.co/003-monica-beeman/ (last week’s interview with Monica Beeman), where we discussed the process of getting into another difficult sport, body building.

We really hit a bunch of points that I found fascinating! This is a conversation that I’ve been wanting to have for sometime, because Cory, aside from his many accolades as an athlete and coach, happens to be my wife, Carrie’s, cousin. If you have just started listening to the Small Moves Podcast, she was interview subject one on this show. You can find that show http://smallmoves.co/001-carrie-paxton/ (here). I hope you enjoy the show.  Below are a bunch of links to the things we talked about in the show.  Feel free to click away, but also remember to click subscribe on your podcast player of choice so that you get to hear all the other episodes that are coming out soon. Thanks again for listening.  I really appreciate you!

Today we interview one of my best friends, Monica Beeman.  She’s one of the resourceful people I’ve ever met in my life!

This social media and marketing genius details how she’s been able to squeeze in being a mom of three, a professional marketer, a wife, and an amateur bodybuilder!  Bodybuilding is one of the most strenuous fitness activities there is, and she was able to START doing it in her 30’s after she had kiddo #3.  AMAZING!

She details the types of systems you need in place with yourself and your family to make an achievement like that possible.  She talks about how marriages aren’t always 50/50, which is commonly quoted as being what makes marriages work.  Sometimes its 90/10, sometimes 25/75.  Things balance out for the family.

Also talks about the type of ratios needed to maintain that level of physique (weights vs. cardio vs. diet).  Also she talks about the HUGE red flags she has seen when selecting a personal trainer or coach.

Welcome to the first episode of the Small Moves Podcast, a podcast dedicated to finding small steps to make big progress in many areas of life, and how best to implement those steps to avoid burnout. Please subscribe to the show so you don’t miss out!

This show has been a long time coming for me.  I’ve been an avid listener of podcast since the early days of podcasting, and always felt it would be a great medium for me to share information with others.  This is the first time I’m broadcasting my voice to the world, so I very nervous!  Please bare with me as I take on this journey.  It will be worth ride.

In this episode, I detail what you can expect from my show, broadly, as well as specific information regarding the shows format so you know what to expect from me now and in the future.  This show will be highlighting experts in five major areas:

Fitness and Nutrition

Savings and Personal Finance

Business, Employment, and Entrepreneurship

Friends, Family, and Relationships

Hobbies and other Personal Interests

The planned format of the show is going to be a weekly release, every Tuesday, for the first few months.  Then twice weekly.  I will be interviewing experts in areas spanning the above five categories.  Initially, interviews will be every other week and a show where I detail strategies that I have come across that I feel you should know about.

The guests that I will be talking to will run the gamut of personal and professional backgrounds in order to get a broad view for you to consider.  Also, we may periodically touch on topics of a sensitive nature: political, social, financial, or religious issues.  I’ll make no attempt to conceal my personal opinions and I will make every effort to expose you to informed opinions that are different from my own.  Learning happens one small step at a time, and those steps often include uncomfortable conversations.  I hope you will stick around and hear out me and the guests I have on these sort of topics. Never forget that you can always learn something!

I appreciate you!

Thanks for listening.

Best,

Jason

This is an experimental format for the Small Moves Podcast, where I hop on with guest co-host, Carrie Paxton.  A brilliant, beautiful, and amazing woman… who I happen to be married to. The entire concept of Small Moves is to show the incremental steps need to make drastic change over time in whatever area your life.  Well, I’d be a hypocrite if I didn’t showcase that strategy in my own life!  Carrie and I are constantly experimenting with things, trying to make our lives and businesses and health better.  This is the first try at doing a periodic check in episode with the two of us discussing things we’re working on and the successes and failures we’ve experienced.

We talk about my new business and website, http://smallmoves.co (Small Moves)

We discuss her new business, launching by weeks end, http://www.buildingblockseducation.com (Building Blocks Education)

We talk about our kiddos and all the crazy stuff we are planning to do with them.

This was a fun chat for me. As it always is when Carrie and I dig in to stuff.  I hope you all enjoy it and give us some feedback about what you thought of the show.  Please subscribe to the show and leave us feedback with your thoughts on great potential guests for the show.  I’m really looking forward to the journey and hope you will come along with us!

I appreciate you!

In today’s episode, we talk with Dori Martin.  A specialist in http://www.funtionaldiagnosticnutrition.com (Functional Diagnostic Nutrition), and owner of http://www.optimalhealthbydesign.com (Optimal Health by Design).

Dori is also the host of a new podcast called https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/off-the-medical-grid/id1274810207?mt=2 (Off The Medical Grid), a show that highlights cases of people who received a terminal diagnosis from doctors. These cases show that these people who went off the medical grid, which means that they began to seek out treatments for their conditions that fall outside the commonly accepted medical procedures. Its a very cool show, and I recommend you check it out if you like this interview.  Like me, Dori is new to the podcasting space so she would welcome the encouragement to keep the show going!

In this episode, Dori details how she has experienced some tragic family history related to cancer, and a few other conditions. She had two young children when she met the man would would become her husband, before he himself received a terminal cancer diagnosis. She believed in keeping your options open to treatment options outside of the traditional model, and Dori will share the astounding results that her family has seen.

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode and I think you will to!
