What does leadership look like to you? It’s more than the checks, nice office, clients or whatever you envision. It's relational management, conflict, empathy, and much more. There are some unseen aspects that might not seem important but it comes with the territory.
Today Delila joins me and we discuss how one of those unseen factors “Mentorship” aligns with Leadership.

When were you taught about emotional management? How did you experience within your family, and how has that impacted how you manage it in leadership?
Many leaders have not recognized that their emotions lead their decision making. This includes how they do professional relationships. Your choice to remain unaware could hinder forward mobility however, tapping into the self-awareness can be the winning move for improved personal & professional results, IF YOU CHOOSE TO PRACTICE IT.

What are you trying to prove? Is it the reason you keep going to the next class, certificate, or degree? Slowing down, taking a moment and transitioning to the next can include rest and putting that hat down, it’s just normalizing that behavior that needs to become a norm for you, a colleague or a team member.
Let’s discuss the need to REST before the transition and why chasing what’s next might be because of an unconscious story that needs to be undone.

Why did you want to lead? What drove you to apply for that role? What did you envision? It's one thing to depart an organization due to mistreatment or for upward growth/mobility but it's another thing to walk away because "winter has come". As we hear the rumblings that 2022 might start off a bit rocky, are you already preparing your exit because you didn't sign up for storms? Let's go back to why you decided to lead and look at the "WE" factor impact of your decision to walk away, rather than staying and fighting through the storm, with the people who need you the most.

Imagine being told you are being released from your job, while being supported at a mental health clinic, following a suicide attempt. This was the real-life experience of a military member who was given this by their leadership, who drove 4 hours to give them this paperwork. Although, they have been released as the leader, other leaders encouraged this behavior. The environment was unhealthy and many still fear retaliation.
Should mental health be normalized in the workplace? Who is responsible for taking that lead?
How are leaders held accountable at all tiers to ensure effectiveness?

Is there really a better way to lay off team members? No one gets into business ownership inspired by the firing of employees. It is typically for financial freedom, for the impact they can make, the legacy building or even the ability to control your own schedule. The world has been learning a lesson in empathy and leadership throughCEO Vishal Garg's approach to laying off 900 employees. Has a lack of interpersonal interaction resulted to a lack of care and understanding or is this just due to a lack of drive for leaders wanting to develop regularly?
While layoffs cannot be prevented, our approach to such a sensitive matter can be handled with sensitivity for those affected. Let's discuss if there is a better way to handle layoffs and hard conversations.

Charles Darwin said, "It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage change." I am in a season transition as a leader in my business and within my organization. I accept and embrace the change because I know it will mean better on the other side but for some, change is uncomfortable or change is something you do not want but NEED. If change is not embraced, it will mean loss in productivity, personnel and even profit.
Today we will discuss 3 ways to plan for change and what changes are upcoming for me in this season of transition.

My family was hit with an unexpected loss and like many leaders, you still have a responsibility to the organizations and businesses you manage daily so you try to juggle both. In reality, taking time away to focus on self and family. I didn't realize I was already storm proofed which allowed me to be able to take time away to focus on what was important at this time of grieving.
Feeling guilty when stepping away should never be something we experience as leaders but the sad reality is many of us feel that way or use work as an escape. True resiliency looks different that what many of us are doing. Let's discuss what you can do to prepare for the storms that all leaders will face so we begin to take the time we need to heal, grow, mourn and come back stronger than before.

All leaders have some type of bias!! That is a fact.
It's important that leaders recognize that putting the work in to recognize what that bias is while also seeking the education to unlearn incorrect information and learn CORRECT information is HIGHLY important. That is because how we view the world dictates how we see ourselves and others which also influences our decision- making. That then trickles down to how we lead in organizations and companies.
A bias we MUST be aware of is for high-performing team members. Many times they are offered more work, more responsibility and more of the load while obtaining less grace and less understanding.

As we wrap up the conversation regarding assessing organizational rules, we review another high performer, Simone Biles. Biles is a 4x Olympic gold medalist and has won 19 world championships who continues to push herself to excel further. That drive has resulted in her trying and landed maneuvers that no one has done before. The questions began when she was scored lower than expected. While judges represented by the International Gymnastics Federation (IGF) state its due to multiple factors to include safety issues, there are questions regarding the scoring Biles received.
Should high performers be judged harsher than others? If a high performer is striving to do more and is doing what's expected to be rated higher than others, should they not be? Are we seeing high performing bias that results in unfair treatment of certain groups of individuals?

Sha' Carri Richardson has been coined the fastest woman in the world but lost the opportunity to be a part of the U.S. Olympic team. This was due to a failed drug test that identified she utilized marijuana which she admitted she used to cope after navigating the loss of her mother and the stress of her role as an athlete. This caused a lot of stir as some individuals believe this rule is outdated while some believe her suspension was warranted.
What happens when your high-performing and top-producing team member breaks a rule? Do you hold them accountable or do you reconsider the rules for them? If you do reconsider the rules, why are you willing to change the rules now? Is it because they are a top producing team member? Would you give the same consideration for a "average" performer?

As we mourn the loss but celebrate the life of Earl Simmons also known as DMX, it is a reminder that leaders are not superhuman but navigate their own personal struggles. There is an idea that leadership means perfection and we tend to put others first rather than prioritize our own personal growth and development.
Let's discuss normalizing that leaders ARE NOT perfect, creating organizational cultures that support those seeking mental health support and prioritize self leadership to address areas of concern.

Today I share a great opportunity, I had to sit on a women's panel to discuss women's issues that we face personally and professionally on the Success Is Within Reach Podcast hosted by Shannon Smith. To expand your worldview and be a change agent, it's important to understand the experiences of others. Understanding leads to empathy and it allows you to see the world from the lens of different experiences to help address the root causes or become an advocate for under-represented groups such as women of color.
You get to learn more from the women's perspective today.

As we continue celebrating Women's History Month we should not only aim to highlight to contribution of women personally and professionally but become change agents to improve the representation of women in leadership and management.
During the pandemic, women especially women of color were the most impacted by job loss or making the decision to pivot professionally to maintain the household. As schools closed and daycare support decreased so has the participation of women in companies and organizations.
This is not only a impact within the United States but globally. Women representation is a GLOBAL ISSUE!!

Clubhouse is an application that has became extremely popular. This app allows users to connect, communicate, share information and learn utilizing audio such as speaking to a group on a phone chat line. It has been strategic in using an invite only format exclusive to iPhone users to create FOMO for those "outside of club".
What can we learn from the Founders and what strategies they used? How do we create a plan to maximize our use of this app versus us falling into the "trap" of overconsumption and a lack of applicability?

We had a great day in the area of gender diversity and women in leadership, as the majority have elected our first female Vice President, Kamala Harris, who is a woman of color. You might not also be aware that we have a Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, CMSAF JoAnne S. Bass, that is a FIRST as she is a female of a different ethnic background. This year has been filled with ups and downs and with changes that must be celebrated, we are still seeing the reality of firsts, in the area of women leaders in higher position.
What can we do to change this so we can see more women representation and gender diversity?

Let's discuss the WHAT and the HOW to help you become a more resilient leader.

What motivated you to start your business? What motivated you to become a leader? Those are some questions we should reflect on before we take on certain roles to identify if its truly to make impact or solely for financial gain. Not to say that financial gain is not a need but what happens when its only a WANT that starts to be the priority over your team, company and organizational goals??
Today we will look at the FALL season of We Work and how greed caused a leading business to fall behind.
Will they ever recover, let's talk about it in Part 1 of this episode.

On October 11th, I walked the virtual stage to earn a B.A. in Criminal & Social Justice. The reason I went back to school was driven by a young student that needed support after losing their scholarship due to teen pregnancy. As I spent over a year closing out my classes, I realized the importance of the journey I was on even from a educational and leadership development standpoint. On this episode, learn the 5 reasons leaders should constantly aim towards learning more, to BECOME a leader that people are loyal to rather than one that people QUIT.

This episode is dedicated to Chadwick Boseman.
While battling cancer, you brought us "cultural magic", stories of change makers and impacted the lives of many. Even though you are no longer with us in the physical, you are inspiring us even more as you did this without allowing a disease to define you. I honor you today with a commitment to continue on this path of being a positive change agent even in the face of hurdles.
As our children head back to school and companies start creating another set of strategies for what "RETURNING" back to work looks like, it is imperative to prep and plan to meet not only client needs but the needs of the employees. A new level of concern is there and we must be able to lead our teams where they feel safe and secure.

The age of 65 is considered the "retirement age" and individuals in their younger 20s might still be considered "babies" in the workforce. The unfortunate thing is both of these types of individuals want to feel valued in the workspace. What if that 60 year old does not want to retire at 65 or that 20 year old wants to be taken seriously in the workplace? Should they be judged by the age category they are in? Are they not capable to add value or take a company to new levels? Lets talk about ageism.......

The generational makeup of organizations and companies are more diverse than ever. We have multi-generational workspaces, households and even families that have been shaped differently. There are children that are having their viewpoints shaped through their experiences during COVID-19, protests, technology advances and a call for more diversity. We also have our seasoned elders who went through different types of pandemics and had different experiences that shaped how they view the world. Now all these experiences are meeting at central locations but instead of learning from one another, we are distant. To prepare for the future, we have to understand how to communicate and embrace generational diversity.

Follow me on this series to show the child behind the adults or teens that commit terrible crimes that leave a path of destruction. Behind every predator or criminal is sometimes a child that could have potentially experienced trauma at a young age that was never addressed. Today we take a look at the death penalty and its history. We will reflect on the tough question, is 18 old enough to receive the death penalty as the adolescent brain is still developing. We will also consider those who lost that loved one who believes justice is served regardless of age or brain development. Let’s talk about it........

Behind every predator or criminal is sometimes a child that could have potentially experienced trauma at a young age that was never addressed. Today remember the life and tragic story of Gabriel Fernandez who lost his life at 8 years old by those who were supposed to protect and love him. We are all visionaries however, there are layers in executing on that vision that we need to educate ourselves on prior to. As Joseph shared his vision with his brothers, he was not mature enough to understand what his dream meant. Once it came to fruition, he truly understood the meaning of it but had to go through a process. On this episode we will talk about the importance of the process and why maturity is required as a visionary.

It might be time to let go of those "friends" that don't add value you or challenge you towards being empowered. Assess those relationships and let go of those who make you feel less empowered and keep those who push you towards that greatness within you.
