Shannon Davenport launched her plant-based clean beauty & bodycare line, Esker Beauty in 2018 after working as a trend forecaster. Working in trend forecasting means you need to be out & about spotting trends, which can include a lot of travel. It is difficult to have a routine when you are constantly on the road for work. One thing Shannon could incorporate no matter where she was (given there was a bathtub), was her nightly bathing ritual.

After she became pregnant, she started to think more about the skin on her body & the products she was using. She considered the fact that people are willing to invest in skincare, but what about the products on a larger surface, your body? In comes Esker Beauty to modernize the bathing ritual! We are excited to have Jim Kuerschner, President of KULE, on our podcast! KULE, the eponymous ready-to-wear label was founded in 2015 by designer Nikki Kule. The KULE aesthetic comes from her love of iconic quirky Americana prep & her love for all things French. Nikki’s parents had a clothing brand, so Nikki grew up in the fashion industry. Her father was known as “The King of Pants” in the 1970s. She always knew she wanted to continue in their footsteps. Nikki went to Parsons in Paris & NY. Jim went to NYU for undergrad & Harvard for his MBA. He interned at Nina Ricci in PR and worked at Carolina Herrera in wholesale, Bonobos as an MBA Planning Intern, with the CFDA as a Strategy Consultant & went through the Management Development Program at Inditex. Zameer Kassam is the CEO & Chief Designer at Zameer Kassam Fine Jewelry. His family was in the jewelry business and he grew up working in their stores. He got his MBA at Harvard Business School (HBS). He was a business analyst at McKinsey, he was Director of Strategy & Business Development at MTV India and was the Head of Bridal at De Beers in London before founding his own line. I met Zameer because we are both Friends of The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. * You’ve done a lot of interesting things in your career and lived in different places. What are the top three things from those experiences that influenced where you are today? * 1. Growing up in family jewelry business - would go straight to the shop, learn about diamonds, rubies, gemstones, learn about how clients shop, role you play & value you have in celebrating special moments that people buy jewelry for. Wanted to do something different. * 2.Time at HBS - a professor challenged them what would you do if you had all the money in the world? He realized he wanted to design jewelry * 3. Time at De Beers Louis Vuitton (joint venture) - learned how LVMH thinks of design & brand building, masterminds of luxury. He got to go to the diamond mines in Botswana, Africa. He felt like a lot of men were proposing with very similar rings. It was a great experience working at De Beers to understand the business side of fine jewelry * What steps did you take to start your company? Left his job before his student loans weren't paid. He moved to NY and stayed on his friends couch. A classmate from business school asked him to design an engagement ring for him to propose with. Zameer reached out to his family to understand how to best proceed. Zameer wanted to tell their love story in the ring they designed. He wanted to care for her & protect his wife for the rest of her life, and she is a bit clumsy. She is Columbian, & there is a history of people in her family wearing Columbian emeralds. The friend asked Zameer to create a design where the Columbian emerald is surrounded by Canadian diamonds (like me) that will forever protect her. It was about his love for her and the time he took with Zameer to share the story. The finance was so excited that her fiancé spent so much time with Zameer although he is so busy. Zameer took a lot of consulting roles, because he didn't have a visa to work in the US. 1. Called friends and asked them to be advisors 2. Everything he has to offer has to be communicated person to person (a lot of word of mouth). Create content to share what the finance did for his finance. (1 hour) 3. Be systematic about the process - have a 3 step process. Step 1: Zameer trains the person on what he thinks is worth it vs. not worth it for stones. 2. Learn the love or family story (1 hour) 3. Share notes, sketches and diamonds, take a deposit and start making the ring. It can happen in less than 3 hours in about 3 weeks instead of someone spending a ton of time walking up & down 5th avenue to try to find a ring * How is Zameer Kassam Fine Jewelry different from other jewelry brands? Do you want something that screams the brand name? Do you want something very sparkly that may not be great quality? What is the objective in the piece of jewelry. Zameer's pieces are more special and personal, and each piece is unique. There is a world of people who are classic and timeless, but they want something different. Find a world where it is classic, but in a personal way. You won't get bored of the piece, and it won't look like it was made in the year it was made, but hard to tell because it is timeless. * How many people does it take to make one of your rings? 3 people unless something very unique they need expertise for. Usually takes about 3 weeks, but they can rush it. Don't be afraid to look outside your industry for people who can transform your industry. Can be helpful to get anoth

What interested you in Jewelry: Humanities major in college, and wanted to take fine arts classes. Took a jewelry making class, and realized she was good at it. How to learn to make jewelry: trained as a metalsmith in college. First class was in beaded jewelry. She moved from L.A. to San Francisco, and the only thing she had room to do in her apartment was beading jewelry. Evolved into a full collection called fashion bridge jewelry in sterling silver and semi-precious. Launched a fine jewelry line. How to start a jewelry brand: Kept getting compliments, and thought there was something to her brand. Started having jewelry parties where she would sell the jewelry. Started wholesaling to retailers. Got her wholesale & resale license. DBA means “doing business as.” How to find factory/manufactures? To scale, will need to outsource. They can be hard to find. Referrals can be a great option. Go to sourcing trade shows. Make friends in the jewelry industry. Makers Row have lists of manufacturers. If in New York (Diamond district) or LA (Hill Street or Culver City). Flourish & Thrive: People were asking her to mentor them, which she turned into consulting. They teach - How to attract dream clients, how to design jewelry that’ll sell, how to price jewelry, how to sell and market their work. Like working with designers best or reps? Designers: with the reps - it is a middleman, like a game of telephone. Creatives aren’t necessarily business people. They have to focus on the numbers in order to have their business. If you don’t have the sales, you won’t have a brand. Build the business with your buyer, come to them with reorder and transfer suggestions. The buyers will know about the trends, and can come to the brands that make sense and see how to incorporate the trend in their aesthetic. If you get a no: ask why. Ask for feedback. Practice gives you confidence. Flourish & Thrive Academy: is jewelry business platform, thinking of opening up into other verticals. Number one jewelry business academy for marketing and sales in online education space. Started a podcast because she had a YouTube channel where she had vlogs each week. Have to film, prepare topics/subjects. Have to keep it concise. Podcast gave her longer format to talk. People listen while driving, working out, commuting, working, etc. Numbers started skyrocketing with people listening. Have started talking about other topics as well. She helps creative visionaries protect themselves. What putting out into the world means a lot. Need to get a village around them to support themselves. Creative types try to do it all themselves so they stay small. Aren’t able to grow & scale a business because their zone of genius isn’t accounting, filing papers, admin work, etc. If they aren’t good managers or leaders, etc can all hinder businesses from growing. Teach people how to build systems in your business, train employees, and get people bought into the idea and your vision. Highs and lows of jewelry business, how used experience in career: The highs were the lows. Getting into Metier SF & TwistOnline changed the scope of her business. Got into the Sundance catalog & Anthropologie. ABC Home called and said Halle Berry & Orlando Bloom bought your jewelry. High & low was getting on QVC - low because she didn’t know how to sell on tv. She was good at increasing her revenue. Every year she had growth years until 2008. Year before expanded into trade shows 10-15 instead of 4-5 she was doing. Was trying to expand too quickly. Wasn’t getting money back she was investing. Mindset for trade shows - Walk a show first, do one at a time, don’t expect to get your money back right away. Stores stop paying you because we’re going out of business. The stock market crashed, had just placed an order with a store for $35k, had b

Jackie Cohen began her career by working on Wall Street. After years of working in Finance, she left feeling unfulfilled and travelled to Africa, India & Israel. Her family has a jewelry business which she worked in after Wall Street. She tried IVF and eventually ended up adopting a daughter. She created a ring to celebrate the birth of her child, which she received a lot of compliments on. This led to the creation of her brand, My Story Jewelry. Proceeds from sales of her pieces go to Helpusadopt.org. Jackie was one of Delia's vendors at Barneys New York, which is where they met. * In reading your biography on the My Story Jewelry website, you’ve had a very interesting life. You’ve travelled a lot and have been influenced by India in particular. Did I read you joined the Israeli army? What inspired you to do that and what did you learn from it? After leaving Wall Street, she felt burnt out and angry. Wall Street can be a toxic environment for women. She did a volunteer program where she lived for 3 weeks. She got to meet Israeli soldiers who live every day as if it is their last instead of so focused on work like in America. There is a sense of fearlessness there. * What was it like working with your family in the jewelry business? She wasn't sure about it at first. She fell in love with the business: putting together the stones, coming up with designs, building a business, etc. She made the line more feminine. * What challenges did you face starting your own company & breaking off from your family business? She and her brother ran the business together for 8 years: bridal, engagement rings, classic look. Jackie isn't married, so she didn't find it that inspiring. Most people get married once and get one ring, they may upgrade, get a halo, or reset it. Jackie did well with the band category because it was something she could wear and enjoy. Once My Story was growing, there was tension between Jackie & her brother for the first time. She was focusing less on the family business, and more on My Story. Therefore, she started working with My Story full time, which relieved the tension between herself & her brother. * What skills from working on Wall Street have you applied to your business? You learn about hustle. It is a man's world. She was always in a room with 20 men, but never felt intimated or took no for an answer or thought she couldn't do something because she was a woman or because of her education, it doesn't matter where you went to school, etc. She was in sales trading, which requires a lot of networking. * How does it work if someone wants a custom piece? Coming from a bridal background, every bride wants something custom, and every stone is custom. There was a lot of CAD (computer aided design) work, so she was familiar with this. My Story is about telling your story, because everyone is unique, and wants something unique and special to them. She gives the specs (the specifics of the piece) to the CAD designer - measurements, fonts, colors, stones, etc. She gets a drawing in CAD, she sends it to her client making sure it is what they want. Once it is approved, then you get a wax which is sent to casting. It can take 3-4 weeks, but can also be rushed. * What was the first piece of jewelry you created for My Story? The one piece she wears everyday. It is called the Julia ring. To commemorate Julia's birth, she wanted to make something understated that isn't screaming mommy jewelry. She put Julia's birthstone in it. When she would be selling her family's jewelry, people would complement her on the piece. They liked it so much that after hearing the story of Jackie becoming a mom, wanted to place an order before she had a brand. She was selling without having an idea of putting something into production, and her brand was born! Easier to sell 12 bands than 12 engagement rings. * Let’s talk about IVF, and the different options women have in

Jean Prounis launched her fine jewelry line Prounis in 2017 when she was 24 years old. This line is filled with details from her family heritage of owning a cabaret club called The Versailles in NYC in the 1940s where Edith Piaf performed. We met Jean at The Frick Garden Party.  * Let’s talk about your family background and how you took all of that into consideration when creating Prounis. She always wanted to have an homage to her grandparents and she always loved jewelry. It felt like a great connection between the two. Her family is Greek and she has always loved ancient Greek jewelry. Her grandfather had an archive of books she frequently refers to. Her inspiration can come from pottery, architecture or jewelry. * Talk to us about all the different elements from The Versailles that show up in your collection and brand. The sage green tablecloths that were used at The Versailles. The sage green is used in all of her branding. She recreated the matchbooks. They make stationary which is inspired by The Versailles menus since they were hand painted. * What are some of your favorite stories your grandfather told you about Versailles? She remembers how proud he was of The Versailles. He left her a letter that wrote all the different performers with their names, dates they performed and lots of newspaper clippings. * What does a typical day or week look like for you? Could get an order for a one-of-a-kind, sourcing stones, spend 2-3 hours at the bench making the pieces, finishes the pieces, lots of emails. Sometimes take time to volunteer. Cultural things, go to a museum, etc. * What led to the decision of using 22k gold? It is the most historical alloy of gold. This is what you see at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. They won't oxidize or tarnish. They can get buried and in 2,000 years, it'll be intact. It is soft and the look is soft and buttery. She alloys all the gold in her studio in the jewelry district in NYC because particular about the gold coloring. She also uses recycled gold from a refiner and she alloys it again. Your skins oils polish the gold and it becomes a second skin. * Where do you find the stones you use? Travel to Tucson. Lots of vendors in Manhattan. * After you decided to start your jewelry brand, what steps did you take to make it happen? When graduated from college, she freelanced for a couple different designers. She was designing for family and friends. She liked creating one-of-a-kind pieces and accumulated pieces she wanted to create. * How did you learn to make jewelry? Classes at FIT. Loved collecting vintage jewelry. She took a sculpture class in college and then took jewelry classes. * Where do you get inspiration for your collections? Everywhere. Love going to The Met if in a pinch for inspiration. Look at her grandparents books. She loves going upstate New York, loves antiquing. * How do you choose the price for your pieces? Price of gold & stones. The labor, packaging, time etc. * Tell us about how you make a piece of your jewelry. There are a lot of one-of-a-kinds. Each link is handwoven & can take 2 months to make. They start by creating a long piece of wire, cut it open and there are links so consistent size, fuse each link and weave them together. Each end cap is made by hand. * Did you grow up wanting to start a jewelry brand? Both of her parents were entrepreneurs. Her first company was called Java Chip Cafe in 4th grade. Her parents friends would come over and she would make them coffee. She went to FIT during middle school and took some classes. She started a t-shirt company with her friend. She loved the branding and creating stories. * What advice do you have for someone interested in starting their own line? Think about how to brand yourself. Have a strong vision and stay true to it. People will tell you otherwise. Go with your gut feeling. Can't do it all yourself.

CJ Hendry was born in South Africa, grew up in Australia and now lives in Brooklyn. She studied Architecture and was pursuing Finance & Accounting at University. She decided none of those were a good fit. She releases collections or series 1-2x per year.  * What is the scribbling technique, and how did you come up with it? + Accidentally stumbled into. She draws into a hyper realistic style and sometimes people mistake her work for photographs. It could be a mix of cross-hatching from when she was studying architecture, but she doesn’t have to lift her hand off the page * How did you make the decision to drop out of college? How did this go over with your family? + Come from a traditional old-school family. Her mom is a teacher and dad works in computers and they are both hard working. Her parents let her figure it out when she told them she wanted to drop out and pursue fine art. * Why did you decide to not work with an art gallery? What are the pros and cons of working with an art gallery? + This wasn’t intentional. The goal was to work with a gallery, and is open to this at some point. Things have snowballed into the next thing, but at some point she will be open to working with a gallery. A pro is getting to work at the speed she wants to work at. She enjoys every aspect of running the process and has a very supportive team. Galleries have relationships and access to the right people, which can be a pro. Doesn’t like to push her art on others. Getting her art in a museum is part of the process. Artists focusing on getting pieces in a museum can be tricky because they will create museum art. Focus on making something that people haven’t seen before. Some artists tailor their career around a prize, which keeps them from progressing in a way they could. * With no formal art training, how did you discover you had a talent for this? + Discovered the talent at age 11 and had the ability to draw. The school she went to was more professional qualifications and took a long time to realize art could be her full time career. * How do you decide what to draw? + Used to draw high-end subjects: draw Chanel bags or dip an Hermes Birkin Bag. Subjects are now slowly moving away from objects and are going more to abstract. It is determined by what she is interested in at the time, and wants to show a progression. The Marlboro Man series came about because she is fascinated with Richard Prince. He did something inspired by The Marlboro Man and she wondered why it had to be so masculine. So she drew cigarette butts with Chanel lipstick on the ends, because this is what brand she wears. It wasn’t fun to get the subject, but something she had to do to get the picture! * How long does it take to create a piece of your artwork? + A couple of weeks or months. She is in the studio 7 days a week, and work all day long, so she can make the work quickly! * How do you determine the pricing for your artwork? + Something costs what people are prepared to pay. She only does 1 of 1, there are no replications, so there is value in that. She can only make so many works per year, and she is making less and less. There is a 2 or 3 year waiting list for her artwork. * What is your view on collaborations? (Fashion brands, other artists, etc) + They are great if it is the right partner. She collaborated with Christian Louboutin, which was a great experience. Last year, she drew Pantone chips, but she didn’t collaborate with Pantone * What direction do you want to go in? Produce as much art as possible or something different? + Going to continue to make the shows and they will get bigger is what she can control. There are lots of people who can dictate where your career goes in the art world. She has goals, but she isn’t sure when

We are featuring Clemence von Mueffling who comes from a family of beauty experts. Both Clemence’s mother and grandmother were beauty editors at French Vogue. Her grandmother also started her career as a model and was on the cover of French Vogue, and guess who was the photographer? Irving Penn! Clemence is the founder & editor of Beauty & Well Being. Clemence worked at Clarins, Puig, and Dior before starting Beauty & Well Bring. Clemence grew up in Paris (she is French) and now lives in NYC. She has recently written a book called, Ageless Beauty: the French Way that gives us the secrets of 3 generations of beauty editors from French Vogue.  * What was it like growing up in Paris? Incredible! Especially having my mother and grandmother as examples because they are the perfect example of French women not looking for perfection, but trying to become the best version of themselves. Beauty requires a ritual. Self care is about self confidence. If you feel good, you look good. Maintenance and prevention are important. It is never too late to start a good routine, * Describe what the Vogue Paris offices are like. All the editors were running around. There was perfume, cosmetics, makeup, they let Clemence try out the different things. Women were elegant. There is a Vogue style, called "The Woman of Vogue." The Woman of Vogue was incredibly chic, elegant and always with a signature perfume. She would know when each person would be there by their scent. Her grandmother wore Guerlain, and now wears Chanel. Her mom wears Sisley, and loves to try new ones as well. * What is Beauty & Well-Being? After working for beauty companies, she wanted to have more her voice. She launched her online magazine. She gathered a team of freelance writers in the beauty & wellness field. Every month, they provide in-depth stories, interviews, high profile people and more. It is a platform for women of all ages from teenager to grandmother at accessible price points. It started in 2014. * When did you start Beauty and Well Being and how did the idea come about? After she had her twins, she felt was a great time to start a new company, almost like a third child. She wanted to talk about beauty & wellness because it goes together. She wanted to bring to women solutions, because people talk about the problems, but they don't give you the solutions. Wellness - how to choose the best skincare products - respect your skin and hair. They don't address fads. Only tried and true beauty tips. + How did you build your team at Beauty and Well-Being? From years working at Clarins, Puig and Dior, she had worked with a ton of journalists and beauty experts. Have to be confident that everything will work out, and need to test it to make sure it will work. + How do you come up with story ideas? Every month there is a theme. She can build the series of interviews, articles, stories. She reads the news, magazines; internationally * We grew up in similar ways with our elders telling us to make sure to have on mascara, lipstick, etc when we were around them! How did this shape the way you think about beauty? Her grandmother would say for Sunday night dinner, Rendez-Vous with mascara. She taught her granddaughters to be feminine. Femininity and self-care is about self-confidence and not vanity. As she gets older, taking care of herself is about giving a positive image about the passage of time to younger generations. She is 88 and looking great! The importance is not to look like someone else, but to look like the best version of yourself. When you get older, the idea is to look good for your age, not younger. Good skin doesn't have to be flawless. We should enhance our best features, work with what we've got. What we were born with. Try to age gracefully. It is better to look our age than to look no age at all. We have to treat our skin to our favorite silk blouse. We should hydrate the skin and keep it i

In this week’s episode, we interview Hong Gyu Shin (from Korea) of Shin Gallery and Vajra Kingsley who works at Art Media Holdings as the Director of Marketing & Business Development. I met Vajra on a Six Degrees Society retreat to the Hamptons. Art Media Holdings has: Art News, Art in American, Modern Magazine, Antiques Magazine. Vajra - What does a typical week look like for you? Art Media Holdings is trying to rewrite how people understand publishing. People aren't reading how they used to. The concept of longford digestion has gone away because we don't have the time/don't make the time. Vajra is focused on new ways to engage with their audience. Whether that is VR experience or create an evening that takes the art to a new level. This is important because education around arts & culture has to shift if people are going to invest in it. Going to a museum as a child isn't enough anymore to get them to buy and invest in their 20s & 30s in the way their parents did. The experiential partnerships she is working on will pay off in 20 years when someone says, I had a great experience at The Apollo Circle at The Metropolitan Museum of Art where I got to see the art come to life in a new way. Collecting as we know it now will change. Shin - How did you start your art gallery? Founded in 2013, 3 spaces are going to convert to one large space by March 2019. He started the gallery on the Lower East Side of Manhattan when he was a Sophomore in College. They represent brands from Israel, Sweden, Brazil, Switzerland, Korea, etc. Shin - How long does it take to prepare for a show? 1 show goes for 6 weeks and putting them together takes 1-3 months. Shin - What was an out-of-the-box exhibit that you curated? They created a massage parlor similar to Chinatown. They also painted the calls black and invited people to come and graffiti the walls to recreate the CBGB bathrooms. Vajra - What goes into putting on an art event? Finding the appropriate partner (fine art insurance or major banks), what is the message, who is the community. Is it top 200 collectors, people who haven't experienced the art world, etc. In choosing the venue, you have to think about the right aesthetic and atmosphere for the event. It needs to be inspiring and engaging. Then content, in the space so people understand why they are there and the purpose of the event. How do you discover new artists? You have to be open. It can be in the coffee shop, at a party, at an art gallery, direct message on social media, etc. Look up and don't get too focused in what you're doing. Go outside the norm. If an artist is so talented, even if the artist doesn't promote their artwork, people will find the artwork. Vajra - What are the different roles in the art world? From majoring in art, she thought she would become a curator. There is the gallery side working in sales, the institution side working at a museum and work under curators, there is the communications side working in social media, philanthropy and foundation work, etc. You are protected from the art market working on the philanthropy and foundation side which allows you to have integrity and not get pushed around on the business side and you can focus on an artists vision. As media is growing, the roles & opportunities in the art world will continue to expand. Vajra: What has been the biggest lesson you've learned in your position? Know what you're not good at and when to ask for help, even when you think you can do it all. Vajra: What is the best way to get into the art world? Attend talks & lectures outside of the traditional art space (at Columbia University, The Whitney Museum, etc), conferences, be curious, what are the different jobs that exist and what jobs are emerging. Her role didn't exist

Monica Sordo grew up in Venezuela and was surrounded by the materials used in her designs in her father's design workshop. She went to school for fashion styling & merchandising in Milan. She worked at Marie Claire Spain as an accessories & fashion editor and in PR at Christian Louboutin before founding her own line. A lot of inspiration comes from her background and growing up in Caracas, Venezuela. Architecture is a huge inspiration for her.

When she was a child, she loved playing office and being the boss wearing her mom's high heels and her father's briefcase. She wanted to work in fashion as an editor. All the people she worked with always told her they could see her starting her own brand.

From her past work experiences, she was able to start her jewelry brand. She knows the needs of an editor and also how to work with press. Working as an editor involved a lot of boxes and garment bags. You get to meet talented people, get to discover creativity, get to travel, go to fashion shows & events. There is A LOT of work behind it. She loves when she gets to shoot her campaigns because she gets to style again when she was an editor. She is a designer and creative director.

Traveling constantly & attending the shows was an important way to discover new talent when she was an editor. She loves to travel and be in constant movement. She finds inspiration in everything she sees. It is a melting pot of experiences. Sometimes she doesn't even realize where the inspiration comes from and something will later remind her she referenced that when designing.

Christian Louboutin is an amazing human being. She worked with them when they were landing in the US and growing. She was a PR Assistant. She learned about wholesale and market week. So many boxes were coming. She never saw so many shoes in her life. As an editor she was used to fashion week and presentations, not market week. Buyers have a budget and they come to invest in the next season. She came from being a well-known editor in Madrid. She hasn't worked in English before, so she needed to now send work emails. It was challenging and interesting. It was a great time for the brand.

After 2 years of working at Louboutin, she decided to start her own brand. Her father had an industrial workshop and loves creating new things. Her mom always wanted to work in fashion, but she worked in finance. She is a jewelry designer as well as Monica. Monica has the workshop, she has her mom and she wanted to do something on her own. It was organic. It took her time to research and find her own style. Monica has the faith in herself and the strength to do what she does today. She worked with her mom's jewelers to get started. Everything is possible. You need to find a way to make it functional. Design isn't an easy road. You have to do a lot of research. Her first store was FiveStory.

Monica has a strong point-of-view. This is important, because you don't want your brand to look like other brands. She is influenced by Art Deco and Pre-Columbian civilizations. Her pieces are all one-of-a-kind because they are hand cut for each of the pieces. The natural stones will have different colors which adds a big value to the pieces. She loves architecture, monumental, feminine and flirty. It is an interesting mix.

They work mostly with brass with inlay work and all-natural stones. Most stones are sourced naturally in Peru, Ecuador or Brazil. When you cut the stones, anything can be happening inside, more of one color, may be glassy or full of lines. They innovate with their artisans and create new styles with them.

It is important to know how the calendar works. It is really challenging, because the timing is set and not flexible. You need to be organized and make sure your team understands the importance. You have to divide your season into having time to design and develop while selling the col

We had the pleasure of interviewing Gigi Burris of Gigi Burris Millinery. She is based in Brooklyn, New York and her studio is on the Lower East Side. She was a 2009 graduate of Parsons School of Design where she was nominated to be the Designer of the Year. She studied RTW there. She was a CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund finalist from 2014. Her hats have been worn by Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Haley Baldwin, Taylor Swift and many more!

Gigi grew up in Florida and didn't always dream of being a milliner. She loved art and working with her hands. Growing up, she worked with the local museum. She studied art in high school. She went abroad to Parsons Paris and got to focus on craft & heritage. Whenever she sketched RTW, it always had a hat. They offered a millinery class and she begged her friend to take it too so they wouldn't cancel the class.

A milliner is someone who makes hats / a hat-maker. She has entrepreneurs in her family, but she never dreamed of starting her own company. Even though she was top 10 of her class, it was hard for her to find a job once she graduated from college since there aren't enough jobs for the influx of students each year. She worked part-time as a freelancer with stylists. She also worked with Dennis Basso where she worked with exotic skins and fur. If you're going to use fur, make sure the animals come from a farm that you know they are treated with the best care possible. The Parsons program is quite intense - similar to law school, MIT or a doctorate. You're expected to pull all-nighters, travel, come in on the weekends, etc, so it really prepares you for the working world. It prepares you for the work-life balance of work taking up most of your time. To work in fashion, you need to know that the time commitment and the financial return might not be in alignment.

How do you make a hat? By hand, which is a technique that is centuries old. It starts with a carved wooden block. A hat has two pieces, a crown (the top part) and a brim. The shape of the hat begins in wood. They work with vintage blocks from the 1890s-1980s. They work with a skilled craftsman who can carve their own blocks. Once they carve the shape, you choose a brim. You place the material over the wood and you mold it with steam. The moisture allows for the material to form around the wood. Then it is baked in an oven. The process is all done with fire - a fire oven that stays on all day long. If it has a welt (a seam around the edge), you'd put a wire in it. You need to put a sweatband inside the hat that can serve as a buffer for your skin.

How many hats are in a collection? She designs with a merchandising background when she designs. When you see her collection in the store or a website, it should look cohesive and transportive. In terms of SKUs, it varies. Without color ways, they will be 28 at minimum and they have gone up to 40 in the past. You can do wide brims, short brims, caps, beanies, etc.

Materials - millinery is a category that has been shrinking, so some of the suppliers they've used have gone out of business. They used to put cotton grosgrain inside the hats, but that facility closed. It is a challenge to find a place to get materials. They get straw from Ecuador and Switzerland. She gets felt from the Czech Republic. Fur comes from Finland.

CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund - she was such a small brand when she went through. She got advice from such an incredible panel of judges, such as, Anna Wintour, Andrew Rosen and Diane von Furstenburg. She was able to absorb everything and tried to apply it to the best of her ability. It helped her feel welcome in the New York City fashion community. She developed a family with the people she worked with - Paul Andrew, Eva Fehren and Ryan Roche.

They show with the main season fashion calendar because of wholesalers. Their client is a buy now, wear now client. She is buying straw through August. She

Delia was thrilled to sit down with the famous manicurist Jin Soon Choi and hear all about her journey. She takes us through her illustrious career from the early days cycling from appointment to appointment where she was named Bicycle Jin up to present day where she collaborates with top designers to create the looks for runway shows. She has worked with the top models, designers and celebrities, such as Karlie Kloss, Marc Jacobs, Phillip Lim, Tibi and more. As Bobbi Brown said herself, Jin Soon is a big deal!
Jin Soon's hand and foot nail salons are our go-to spot for manicures and pedicures. Delia first met Jin four years ago when she was working on the Cosmetics buying team at Barneys New York. Delia got to go backstage with Jin during fashion week to the Tibi show where Bobbi Brown was doing the makeup. Bobbi leaned over and said, "Jin you're such a big deal" and Jin leaned over and said, "Bobbi, so are you!!"
Jin Soon Choi is Korean and moved to Manhattan in 1991. She only knew one person from Korea and they turned out to be her roommate. Jin didn't speak English when she first arrived, so she had no choice but to work in either a grocery or a nail salon. Korea was similar to NYC in that she could freely walk the streets, there are four seasons and lots of Korean people & Korean food. She decided to stop working at salons and start doing home-service. Jin started working with a PR agency which helped her to get editorial work and start doing fashion shows. Her eponymous nail polish was founded in 2012. There are 4 nail salons in New York City in Tribeca, Lower East Side, Upper East Side and West Village. The first salon opened in 1999. Her husband is an architect and he designed the salons.

She discusses how she got into the fashion industry, how she learned to start and grow a business & the process of designing a nail collection. When creating a collection, she starts with a theme so there is a story included in the collection. She does a lot of research surrounding this theme.

Her products are eco-friendly, safe & healthy nail polish AND long-lasting. Since she has salons, she can ask her customers what they are looking for. Their products started with 5-free, now they are 10-free. Once the media comes out with an ingredient that is harmful, they reformulate and remove that ingredient. The shape of the bottle was influenced by her husband who is an architect. She loves the sleek, simple, modern and elegant design. She found the bottles in Italy. They custom made the cap as the same shape as the bottle. It has both an outer and inner cap.

For her first collection, she named the products after classic novels.

Jin works with select designers each season to do the nails for the runway. New York Fashion Week - have to go to tests before the shows. At the test, the designer has chosen the colors for the collection. The hair, makeup and nail teams meet with the stylist who is running the show. They narrow down to the theme of the collection and go from there. The test is 1-2 weeks before the show. Choosing the shape and color of the nails is all about collaboration. Jin's schedule during NYFW depends on the show. If there is a 10am show, she has to get up at 6am. Her days could end around 8pm at night. She brings 4-5 technicians for about 20 models, but shows with 50 models would need 10-12 people. Fashion week isn't easy, it is hard, but kind of like a big party with friends you've known for a long time. She has worked on shows for Michael Kors, Prabal Gurung, Tibi, Marc Jacobs and Phillip Lim.

She has thoroughly enjoyed working with editors from Vogue Magazine - Phyllis Posnick & Tonne Goodman. Jin even got to work with Irving Penn before he died, with The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently had an exhibit on. Phyllis says Jin is the best manicurist (which is true)! Whoever has a basic skill, the older generation appreciates.

We were so pleased to interview the iconic makeup artist, Sandy Linter at Rita Hazan salon. Sandy has worked as a makeup artist since the 70s and was 1 of 5 MUAs in the city, which today there are millions it seems! She has worked with the top magazines, editors, celebrities, models, influencers & photographers in the industry. She can count Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Barbara Walters, Brooke Shields, Christie Brinkley, Elizabeth Hurley, Hugh Grant and many more incredible people as clients.

She perfected her disco beauty look from her Studio 54 days.

She grew up on Staten Island & moved to NYC as soon as she could. Sandy loves makeup because it brings out the best of beauty in women.

Her mom got subscriptions to all the high-fashion magazines. Her mom loved makeup, but didn't know what to do with it. When Sandy would look through the magazines, she could look at the makeup and figure out how to achieve the look in the magazine. Sandy did her mother's makeup before she went to work.

After working as a secretary, Sandy went to work at Mr. Kenneth's salon. His clientele was the "who's who" of New York City. He did every society woman, major editors of magazines, models & actresses. He had a small booth in Bloomingdales.

Sandy shares a story of working with Jackie'O. The next time she did her makeup, she did big smoky eyes. Jackie ended up buying all the products from the face chart.

Sandy did one of the Vogue editor's makeup who then wrote a 2 page article feature on her in Vogue. After that, she was working with Vogue.

The most iconic shoot Sandy worked on was a shoot for Andy Warhol's Interview Magazine where Debbie Harry was on the cover.

Studio 54: what was it like getting ready, what did you wear, what was the music like, what was the feeling there? Sandy was friends with hairdressers who would come over each night and do her hair, she would do her makeup and they would style her, so of course, she had to go out. In those days, you could get into a cab and say, "take me to Studio" and they knew where to go.

Typical day: be on a shoot all day and go out at night. Sandy could go to work the next morning with her Studio54 outfit on.

Makeup artists need to adapt to the current trends. If there is something you love that is "out of style," it'll come back at some point, so don't worry. Your clients know what is "in" and what is "out," so you have to know as well.

Sandy has done makeup for a fashion show and she was the only makeup artist for the whole show.

Advice for an aspiring makeup artist: work with a company or salon, don't just work as a freelancer.

Sandy is the author of 2 books. "Makeup Wakeup" & "Disco Beauty". For the first 30 years of Sandy's career, she made up women in their 20s. Then, Sandy started working with women older than that and she found they related to her. It is a great book if you'd like to update your makeup look. Even if you've gotten injectables, it is still important to wear makeup. Less is less.

Disco Beauty was a labor of love book. She would be booked during the day with the best photographers & models and at the end of the day they would do a shoot for the book. Makeup artists tell her now this book is their bible.

Working with....
Goldie Hawn - Sandy did a natural look on her as most girls who come from L.A. do.
Elizabeth Hurley - She is naturally funny
Helmut Newton - they worked on a shoot with Patti Hansen together. Sandy serendipitously came upon the person who represented Helmut.
Arthur Elgort - Sandy worked with him when working for Vogue. You can't tell the models are working in his photographs. They are almost unaware he is taking the picture.
Richard Avedon - One shoot was with Jerry Hall. He was good looking, but had a short temper.

Chelsea Goldman is the Founder and Creative Director of the emerging designer RTW brand, CF. Goldman, which launched in Spring 2015. She interned at Celine, Narcisco Rodriguez and Proenza Schouler. She went to London College of Fashion and Central St. Martins. Chelsea grew up in NYC. Growing up here causes one to grow up quickly, but you get such great access to multiple cultures and people. It gave her the opportunity to take classes at Parsons and FIT from a young age. She was able to sneak into fashion week and went to her first show, Lela Rose, at 13. Chelsea's mom was a fashion designer and her dad is in the jewelry business, so she comes from a design-oriented family. London is a more creative place in terms of fashion and they are willing to take risks in a different way than New York since NY is very business focused. She wanted to meld the design and spirit of London to NYC. Chelsea emailed people on LinkedIN, especially alumni in order to land her incredible internships. She was there the latest, worked the hardest and she always said yes. This work ethic and mindset allowed her the opportunity to go to Paris and work at Celine. She was Phoebe Philo's second assistant a year in. Because of this, she was able to go into the atelier with Phoebe and watch her work. Celine was her longest internship. She would spend 2 days a week at school and 3 days a week at Celine. A month before fashion week, she would go to Paris and work in the studio. In choosing the name, CF. Goldman, she wanted to make sure it was a unisex name so she could later branch into other categories. The corset is an interesting item for women because it is such a historic item that has been worn as undergarments, although sometimes restrictive. She likes the thought of taking that back and also loves that it is something that is really crafted. You have to really make it well. There are so many layers, there is a stretch to it and it is made in such a beautiful way. The brand is all about craft, you can't cheap out on a corset. She started working on the collection 4 or 5 months before it came out. It was the longest lead time she had and since you don't have production, there is such a luxury of time where you can hone the vision. You don't have to worry about sales or production. When designing a collection, she starts in fabrics and research. She and her team go to libraries, Tumbler, Pinterest, artists she likes, etc. They compile everything they've seen for the last six months that has interested them. They go to different mills in the city to look at fabrics. After, they start sketching as well as look at old shapes they like that they want to re-use and redo. They give the sketches to the factory who makes the first sample, they will have fitti

Matthew "Mateo" Harris has a fine jewelry brand named, Mateo New York. Mateo was a 2017 CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund finalist. He also has handbags and candles, making Mateo New York a lifestyle brand. He is from Jamaica and later moved to NYC. First, he thought he wanted to go into Hospitality and Hotel Management. The book Think & Grow Rich changed his life and this is how the brand Mateo New York came about. He was sketching non-stop and trying to find his voice as a designer. He sat at the bench with some jewelry designers and that is how he learned to make jewelry. He saw how they were sauntering the metal and how they were polishing or setting a stone. He also attended "YouTube University" and learned a lot by watching YouTube videos. He believes that if you want something, put your mind to it and do the work, you can do anything. He launched with Men's jewelry and was making pieces that he wanted himself - clean and classic. The first collection was very industrial like the contents in a man’s toolbox. A screw fell out of the wall when he was moving and he decided to make it into a necklace. Rhianna wore a piece (the zipper necklace) and everyone wanted a full collection. He has grown a lot from when he first started. He knows about different gemstones and pearls, how to tell if they are real etc. Being Jamaican, he is naturally drawn to the colors of the flag - black, green & yellow. He loves Black Onyx, Emeralds and Yellow Gold. Keeping the pieces at the right scale enables him to ensure he achieves the sweet spot price point that is attainable. Mateo's Soho boutique, along with data from his ecommerce site helped him learn who his customer is. The first time he wanted to join the CFDA, Steven Kolb told him that he wasn't ready. He closed the Men's business and started making Women's Fine Jewelry in 2014. He always wanted to design Women's Jewelry and the first collection was based on simplicity and minimalism. He wanted it to be simple, clean, wearable and affordable. He was a CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist in 2017. There is a lot of pressure, stress and excitement felt during the program. There was an Instagram challenge, a design challenge and many more. They had to do a fashion week presentation, which was his first presentation during NYFW. They got to go to Anna Wintour’s house. His favorite experience during the CFDA Fashion Fund was shooting with Karlie Kloss. He learned a lot about himself and the tenacity he has, how to present your business in the right light and how to work with other designers. Mateo New York handbags are made in Portugal. The handbag collection has been 3 years in the making. He worked with Firmenich on the candles and perfume. Mateo is precise & informed in the scents he wants for the brand. He wants to create a lifestyle brand, so all of the classifications (handbags, jewelry, etc) go together. Since relaunching the brand, his favorite moment was getting featured in American Vogue. To design a jewelry collection, you start with a sketch, which is sent to his team and they do a digital cad. For jewelry, some pieces they use a cad or a cast. Most everything is handmade, so they use a wire. It goes from a sketch to either being hand done or cast, polished and set with stones. For handbags, he starts with a sketch and then sends it to the pattern maker, they assemble the first model, he approves it and it goes into final production. His inspiration comes from modern art, particularly Alexander Calder. Mateo wants to create handbags that are desirable and that women will crave. They have classic shapes that’ll never go away. All of the bags have female names because at this point, he has so many women in his life. Putti

Jeffrey worked at Ford Motor Company, Jaguar, got his M.B.A. at University of Virginia and worked as an investment banker before creating his eponymous handbag line. Members of his family are artists, so being creative isn't that far off. All of his career experiences helped him when starting his handbag line. He learned about sleek, technological design and marketing techniques while working at luxury car companies. At Jaguar, he learned about sculptural beauty in products, materials, fit, finish, etc. Without realizing it, Jeffrey got an education in fashion while at Jaguar, because the brand is very much a fashion brand. His handbag designs are made by aerospace engineers and are patent pending. Jeffrey decided to use his name, but only after much thought. Using one's own name can be both terrifying and the ultimate motivator as there have been horror stories of people loosing their names. Jeffrey wanted to ensure his bags would be recognizable. He loves the 3D & architectural aspect of the designs. His designs are analogous to a high end sportswear as coincidence, but certainly not by accident. His career, like many others, was not totally mapped out. You decide opportunities as they are presented to you and looking back, all the pieces of the puzzle fit together and make perfect sense. Graduating with an MBA, he thought he knew a lot more than he did. Rolling up his sleeves and starting his company is really where he learned to grow and run a business rather than working in finance or getting his MBA. He focuses on three important pillars of the bag: beauty, technology and performance. Twenty hours of handwork goes into every single one of the bags. This 20 hours is before adding hand painting adding gold leaf, etc, which increases the amount of time to make each piece. Beauty: they focused on a clean design. There are no hinges. When holding it in your hand, there is nothing to scrape against your fingers or palm. It feels smooth and is clean to look at. There are a variety of finishes and some of the matte finishes are very soft. When you open it, you see the hand-stitched, Italian lambskin in white, silver and a variety of other colors. Beyond beauty, technology is really important. Since it is a metal case, they have worked to feature a technology that allows a phone signal in and out, that is patent pending. The bags are lightweight for their size. They engineered it from aerospace aluminum, high performance, strong materials that are used in high-end race cars & spaceships. The level of performance and technical specificity used to create luxury cars is the same attention to detail that goes into Jeffrey Levinson handbags. The simplicity and clean beautiful form of the handbags along with the technological aspects were a deliberate and concerted effort.

Daniella Kallmeyer is the Owner/Designer of KALLMEYER New York. She got a Bachelor's Degree at London College of Fashion, majoring in Fashion Design & Technology. She interned/worked at LUCA LUCA, Proenza Schouler, McQ Alexander McQueen and Alice & Olivia before starting her own line in 2011. Daniella's family is from South Africa. Her grandmother, a dressmaker, lived in New York and therefore, Daniella spent a lot of time there growing up. She always knew she was going to end up living in NYC. From her travels, she has paid attention to the way people present themselves and how they behave. She understands the way people work inherently and how wearing a garment contributes to someone's identity. Working with Lee McQueen of Alexander McQueen taught her perfectionism is important no matter how many times it takes to get to the final product. She worked on McQ which had a smaller team within Alexander McQueen. Her experience at McQ was more isolated and controlled which helped her take luxury consideration of design and transform it into a relatable context. Lee would come and review the textile work or the colors, references, inspiration, sketches, drapery, etc. She was able to take the inspiration from the couture collections of Alexander McQueen and translate it to the everyday woman for McQ which was a lightbulb moment for her to know how important it is to give this option to people. She started her experience in the fashion world with LUCA LUCA. There was an intimacy to his design and the way the details & quality mattered. Having this as her first experience in this world, educating herself and understanding the industry was extremely influential. She payed attention to the interactions Luca had with others in the showroom, design studio and the store which explained to her early on why fashion and designing in this way matters. Next, she interned with Proenza Schouler when they were a relatively small brand. Seeing the level of detail and uninhibited creativity catapulted her into a whole new level of desire to be a part of this world. Getting hired at Proenza had a lot to do with having worked at Alexander McQueen since they knew she was coming from an environment with that kind of challenge and authentic design process. Growing up when she stayed with her grandmother, there was a sewing machine on the kitchen table and they'd get to fix up things or make changes, sew skirts, etc. She had an excitement and passion around these memories. She remembers laying her sister on this huge sheet of white paper and tracing her out. This was her first experience making a pattern at age eight. They had black and gold lame fabric laying around the house and she ended up using that to make a flat paper doll dress. For her graduation, she put together a collection with 21 looks. She always knew she wanted to be a designer, but it was a different kind of decision to start her own line after having experiences working for established brands. Every good business comes from a need to fill a space and a lack of something. In her early twenties, she felt there was something missing in the contemporary accessibility space. She wanted a brand with international sophistication. A garment you can wear in front of your grandparents, best friends, business partners, interviews, first dates, etc that was accessible from both price point and lifestyle perspective, but that had a sense of personal grandeur with class, sophistication and timelessness. Price point starts with aesthetic. How many places can they wear this? What does it mean for them to wear it in both a casual and formal way? Can it be both? Is it too much or too little of something? She understands construction and quality from her background because of the tai

Eleanor Turner is the Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer at Argent. Eleanor is from Lynchburg, VA & dreamed of moving to NYC or Paris and working in the fashion industry. She attended SCAD, Savannah College of Art & Design, where she majored in fashion design. Starting with an internship at Vivienne Tam, she then worked as a designer at Isaac Mizrahi, Tommy Hilfiger, Tory Burch & J.Crew before founding Argent. Argent was founded in 2016 by Eleanor Turner and Sali Christeson. Argent is a functional workwear company, offering stylish options for women that evoke confidence and allow them to conquer the world! Argent clothing has hidden, functional elements like microfiber pockets to clean glasses or an iPhone screen, places for lipstick or pens, iPhone pocket and more. Their use of color and patterns makes the thought of wearing a suit fun again and they are most often reversible, so you get two-for-one!!
Eleanor comes from a family of entrepreneurs. Her great-grandfather owned textile mills and outfitted railroad workers in the 1940s & 50s. She always had the entrepreneurial spirit and fashion industry in her blood, which she realized later as she learned about her family history. Around the time Eleanor was thinking of breaking out on her own and starting a company, a mutual friend introduced her to Sali. Sali wanted to start a women's work apparel company & began discussing this with Eleanor. They went shopping together and realized there was a huge space in the market for this. They knew they could turn suiting on its head and set out to do so! Once you have an idea, it is all in the execution. In order to get started, they had to find manufacturing partners, sample & pattern makers, production partners, make sure the quality was right & find the fabric.
The design process - Argent is trying to work on tighter lead times (6-8 months) so they can affect change closer to when the pieces will go to market. They start a season with inspiration which comes from the customer and her everyday life - the atmosphere of the world around us. From there, they begin development, find fabrics and start sampling the clothes.
Eleanor's favorite part of her job is talking to the customer, finding out what she needs and how to solve that problem. Her second favorite part is incorporating color since the workwear space has typically been void of color. She gets color stories inspiration from art, tv, etc.
Argent has two main collections a year - Spring & Fall with one smaller drop within that to build upon the season.
The cross-over blazer is the core piece. There are pants to go back to all the blazers. There are blouses, jumpsuits, dresses and more!
Fabric mills are developing more functionality into the fabrics. CoolMax is one that feels like traditional suiting, but behaves like a performance fabric - temperature regulates (based on your body temperature, it will adjust itself to balance out your body temperat
