In this week’s episode of The Score, Eric and Justin sit down with Daniel Flores (@trumpetpapi) — musician, content creator, and advocate for culturally rooted music education. Daniel shares his journey growing up in underfunded, majority-Hispanic music programs, and how those early experiences shaped his passion for making music more accessible and meaningful for all students.
From starting the first collegiate mariachi ensemble in Illinois to helping other student groups across the country form their own, Daniel has been at the forefront of pushing for representation in spaces that often overlook genres like mariachi, banda, and conjunto. His story sheds light on the challenges of advocating for underrepresented traditions in predominantly white institutions, and the resilience required to keep that work moving forward.
We also dive into Daniel’s role as a digital educator on TikTok and Instagram, where he uses his platforms to “democratize” music education and connect with students and audiences beyond the classroom. Ramon's Free Resources!
Ramon Rivera began teaching Mariachi while he attended California State University Northridge in the late 90s. He started with one afterschool program at Oxnard Union High School District that grew to 3 high school programs in less than 3 years. Developing a style and approach that prioritized student connection, innovation, and adaptation. He led these programs to incredible heights including national recognition as one of the fastest-growing programs in the state. In the summer of 2005, Mr. Rivera was recruited by Wenatchee School District to lead an already established Mariachi program. Although the decision to leave his home state was tough he was excited about the possibilities. In the 17 years with Wenatchee, he tripled the program and established a strong middle school Mariachi program as well as providing students with unique and impactful experiences such as trips to colleges and universities, performances with artists such as Garth Brooks, and interactions with leaders like Dolores Huerta. In 2020 Mr. Rivera took his 20+ years of experience to Mount Vernon School District and although the pandemic changed many aspects of teaching for Mr. Rivera it did not change the importance of connecting with students. Mr. Rivera's ability to adapt and innovate continues to contribute to his many successes and recognitions. It has also provided him with opportunities to serve as a clinician helping other school districts establish their own programs.

We received the news that our friend and past guest, Jarritt Sheel, had passed. We met via social media as he was a supporter and fan of our podcast. He booked us for several semesters to do guest lectures for various of his courses at the Berklee School of Music. In return, he would always reach out to us to celebrate our multiple milestones. We were talking about continuing our collaborations and potentially being on SXSW EDU. Our prayers are with his family, friends, and loved ones. He was indeed a beautiful person, educator, musician, and leader. May he rest in peace.

In many situations, directors walk into positions where they have to rebuild a band program on the verge of extinction or on the decline. This can be a daunting task for any director. Eric and Justin will share some of their experiences rebuilding a band program in the heart of the city of Houston.
Eric and Justin served on the band director staff for the Heights High School Band in the Houston Independent School District. In three years, the program grew from 56 returning members to 165. From one concert and jazz band to 4 concert bands, 2 jazz bands, an award-winning percussion program and an UIL area advancing marching band.
