The Lightest Form of Flogging: Recent Episodes

Jim and David

A non-theology podcast in which a stodgy presbyterian and a casserole-loving baptist try to understand how they got to be the way they are.

View Details

If you’ve ever tried to get gum off your shoe, you understand how hard it is to get rid of this podcast. You also understand how hard it is for us to get rid of Ben Robin. In this episode, he joins us again for another text adventure game. Also Jim and Ben get quite confrontational about David’s covenanter-y beliefs.

This episode is mastered in surround sound, so you may want to listen with headphones.

There comes a time in every podcast’s life when they release an episode like this one. Probably. Most likely. I think so, anyway.

We have some good conversations about Jim’s anthophila-at-rest expression, then read some Mitch Hedberg jokes, then “vamp” in follow up for the rest of the show.

You have died of dysentery. Or rather, you’ll wish you had. No, wait. The show is good now. Sorry, Jim. Anyway, in this episode we have Ben on to play a text adventure game called Flaming Goat! Since it wraps up pretty quickly, the three of us come up with a game about trains and Francis Schaffer on the fly. Then we talk a bunch about what’s wrong with David. Lastly, Ben has a last word at the last.

This episode was actually mastered in Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio—and while that won’t come through 100% since it needed to be exported as an MP3 for podcasting, it is best listened to in stereo—so if you have headphones or some nice stereo speakers, maybe consider using them to listen.

Um. I’m not sure what to write here. Officially, we covered two more chapters of Jordan Peterson’s book. Unofficially, just listen and find out. Okay? I’ve got things to do, too. Was this description really something you were going to read and evaluate whether or not to listen to this episode? I didn’t think so.

Our main topic is a combination of two chapters of Jordan Peterson’s Twelve Rules for Life, because we’re trying to finish it before we end the show. Is it worth it? We’ll leave that for you, the listener, to decide.

To kick things off, we have some fairly silly conversations about birds and Veggie Tales, and then we must give some grave news regarding Jim’s participation on the show. But don’t worry! This is not the end! It is but the beginning—but it is the beginning of the end, so there’s that. I guess that was kind of misleading. Sorry.

Well, listeners asked for it and we delivered. Our shortest ever intro to an FCU episode. We barely say anything at all and just dive right into the fun.

Speaking of the fun, while Jim and David are in transit from Paris to their new-to-them-sorta homes in Broken Whistle Montana, we check in with a beloved character, Broken Whistle resident, and cardiac patient, Lester Branigan. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll just say he’s not having a good day. I won’t say that it’s a bad day, because that’s in the title and it would get repetitive.

In this episode, we finally explain our recent and unexpected hiatus—or rather Jim does. ”‘It’s not my fault!’ – Han Solo” – David Mikucki

For the meat of this episode, we conclude the Jim and David on the Run series. To say anything else would be a spoiler, and David hates spoilers, even for things he’s already seen—yea, even for things he’s made with his own hands. So you’ll just have to listen, buster. Headphones or a quality stereo system is recommended. Actually, David just tried it and it’s pretty cool to use iOS 15 with Spacialize Audio turned on—but he doesn’t recommend installing the iOS 15 beta just for this.

Wow. It’s been a while. This episode was actually recorded on May 21, just days before Jim would, as I (David) understand it, literally travel the entire United States of America without warning for something like 30 days. Impressive.

We kick things off with silly discussion about some CCM artists: their names and their voices. After that, for production reasons, we have no follow up. We tried. We really did. But we had nothing. At least we also tried to make it funny. Again, we really tried.

Our main discussion is a sort of smorgasbord of topics related to photography. We’d like to think everyone wants to take nice pictures of something at some point in their life—pictures of their pets, children, nieces, nephews, or HelloFresh meals. So David offers some tips on using your phone to take photos, as well as some tips on getting started as a professional photographer. For some reason Jim thought that last topic would be interesting enough to get started. Thankfully, a lot of the advice applies to any freelancing field in some way, so you can take comfort in that.

This episode is about The Lord of the Rings, VFX, and Psalm-singing. If that seems weird to you, you’re probably new. Anyway, the show is mostly about LOTR and VFX up until the 43 minute mark. At the 43 minute mark, we discuss the Psalms, but the discussion arises out of Jim’s appearance on episode 24 of The Balm in Gilead Podcast—a podcast about music, especially Christian music, and often even more especially Christian worship music. While it’s not strictly required, listeners may find it helpful to listen to that episode before listening to the latter part of our episode.

For follow up, we talk about TENET without any spoilers and we talk about how our little slices of quarantine are going and whether Jim is ready to go crazy and start coughing on people at Safeway on his next trip to buy Zebra Cakes and milk.

In this episode, we talk about wanting to see TENET, have some follow up about humor and weirdly-violent skits, and then we dive in to our main topic. It seems a waste to give it its own paragraph considering how short that first summary was, but this sentence should make up for it.

Our main topic is Jim trying to remember more positive or relatively neutral influences his dad had on him. We did an episode somewhere in the past about how Jim’s dad leaving affected him, but in a recent episode, Jim a little about how his dad shaped his sense of humor, so we thought it would be a good idea to dive in a little more on that and adjacent things.

Oh, you want show notes? People in the Slack complain about last week’s show notes, and now there’s a demand for another round? You couldn’t live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me.

Anyway, this episodes starts with an oddly passive aggressive game of Baptist or Naw. It contains our longest host-intro ever, and we bring Ben Robin in for some lively follow about things and stuff.

Our main topic is served by chef Ben Robin (pronounced Roe Ben). The topic is inception. Not the movie—although we did make all those jokes. We discuss the idea of helping someone else come to a conclusion and think its their own. If you think about it long enough, you might come to the conclusion that it’s a very powerful persuasion technique. That’s why it’s part something of our persuasion series.

To start, David shows off how unfamiliar him is with history and figures of the same. It's really not good, but he made a Michael Jordan joke so Jim says that makes up for it.

In follow up we reveal that neither of us is a psychologist, and that we are in fact quite dumb. There is no doubt whatever about that. Dumb as door-nails. Mind! I don’t mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dumb about a door-nail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a roofing nail as the dumbest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country’s done for. You will therefore permit me to repeat, emphatically, that we are as dumb as door-nails. This must be distinctly understood, or you might actually believe the rest of the things we relate.

Anyway, for our main topic, we discuss something relevant again. Not for the sake of relevancy, a thing for which we almost never strive. But because the issue has been on our minds a lot lately (due to its virtual unavoidability and not any piety within us, sad to say) and we thought encouraging discussion of said issue would be of benefit. Anyway, the topic. The topic is privilege and compassion. After listening to this, we're expecting to be hung as piñatas at some poor candy-less conservatives birthday party.

We kick things off with a game of Baptist or Naw. No, that’s not a misprint. You read it right. Baptist or Naw. Yes, it’s highly derivative from our other game, which is derived from Robot or Not with John Siracusa. But if you didn’t like things that are highly derivative, why are you listening to this show? Heck, you’re probably a baptist and you probably prefer the 1689 over the Westminster Confession. Talk about derivative. How dare you?

We also play a voicemail and read a text message. No thanks to most of you, who wouldn’t send in a voicemail if we literally begged you to on the show.

For our main topic, which we actually have, we discuss directionlessness. Finally. Of course, due to the voicemail, follow up, and other things, we hardly had any time to discuss it. But hey, we’re making progress or something.

Lots of follow up this week, but not as much as last week.. So I guess that’s alright. We do talk a bit about COVID-19, so if you haven’t heard enough about that from everyone else, this should be a good opportunity for you.

For our main topic, Jim wants to talk about discipleship. Specifically, he wants to discuss the idea of a church having a specific, intentional program for discipleship. David’s had ecclesiology on the brain a lot lately, so of course he take it in that direction.

Last week, we had “women” in our title. This week, we have a woman on our show! Don’t worry, we’re still good complementarians; she’s only on briefly, for follow up. Sarah joins us to talk about how and why David is the way he is, and stuff.

For our main topic, we discuss a quote from H.P. Lovecreaft and the idea of Big Data, hence the weirdly apt title. Anyway, here’s the quote:

“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.” — H.P Lovecraft,

Jim didn’t have an intro, so we just like talk and stuff. It’s different from the main part of the show, where we just like talk and stuff—because of the uh… topic. Or something? Ask Jim.

Our main topic is how David thinks about failures, not so much moral failures (like this show), but more like practical failures of humans (like this show). We especially talk about failures of humans to do things that humans are rather, by nature, bad at.

Anyway, for our main topic, we talk about the genetic fallacy. We discuss its many forms and also the difference between using the genetic fallacy to definitively prove something and simply being careful about something because of its origins. Speaking of which, be careful listening to this episode because of its origins.

In this episode, the audio is what Jim would call wiggidywack because Jim hit the wrong button on his audio mixer—which admittedly is more complicated than it needs to be. Anyway, we kick things off with a contractually obligated ad for Bill Hasinger’s Instagram written by Bill himself. We’d suggest skipping it, but we’re contractually negotiated not to—but we’re not contractually negotiated to not say that.

Anyway, our main topic is the inverse of the law of the excluded middle. It’s the law of the exclusive middle. We discuss why the middle of the road position is often the most appealing, why it has a certain rhetorical persuasiveness, and David references Merlin Mann’s “turns out” concept to illustrate part of why this might be. It’s like fun and educational and stuff.

In this episode, we forgot an intro. We’re 80 episodes in and we still have no idea what we’re doing. This is the kinda things that keeps listeners leaving. Anywho, Jim has some funny skits and stuff, finally.. So that’s good.

Our main topic, which is brief, oddly, is about denying multiple sources of causality. No, David didn’t pick it. Jim did. David just suggested it. And it was last-minute—well, actually we picked it live. Anyway, it’s about when people say things like “God didn’t send Jesus to die for us because he loved us. He sent him because he cared about his own glory.” – When in fact, He did it for both reasons.

It’s a pretty interesting topic, but don’t let that get you too excited. There’s plenty of disappointment still.

This might be our most follow-up heavy episode to date. But first, Jim shares a moment with David in a segment called, “When Popular Theologians Bitterly Disappoint Us.” Next we dive into our generous follow-up, which includes an explanation on why i’m got mad, how Jim’s job is going, how David’s doing in his new church, and a handful of stupid little things no one cares about but David (of course).

For our main topic, we discuss when we’re tempted to lie. We talk about the temptation to lie when we are trying to persuade people, specifically. We each share some stories of when we’ve done this and what’s made us decide we need to do it less. We also talk about why it’s important, when you’re with like-minded people, not to just pick bad examples of the other side, or outright lie about them while everyone cheers and shouts, “David! David! David!” and then they pour gatorade on your head, but it’s sugar free, so it’s not sticky afterwards. Then they bring out a white robe for you to wear and—

Anyway, yeah.

Oh, man. This is an episode, alright. We kick things off with a voicemail for Bill, and somehow things only manage to go downhill from there.

Our special guest is Ben Robin, again. It might be getting less special. Anyway, he receives an honor we typically reserve for no one at all: he joins us for our follow up segment. Follow up really is a two man job, though, so the segment smacks of too many chefs in the dining area. Nevertheless, we carry on.

Our main topic is Spiritual Gifts. And oh, man—it sure was a thing. Everyone was feeling fighty, and David didn’t have his emotion chip turned on—so empathy, as they say, was lacking. Anyway, we’re all still good friends, I think. But seriously, if you like it when we argue, this is your episode. You probably won’t be able to stop smiling for days. People will wonder what’s wrong.

Oh, and by the way, we had an after show. Ben picks a fight with David on having a high view of the church. Rhetoric flies. Statements are made. Children cry (I think). It’s quite moving.

First, David has one last beer for Jim. I guess we’ve bookended our weird little series introducing each other to different alcoholic drinks—because we started with Scotch and ended with a Scotch Ale. This wasn’t intentional, I can assure you. We’re too dumb to do something like that. Jim also talks about mind palaces and pie or something.

For our main topic, it’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Jim and David discuss prophecy. Specifically, we talk about Wayne Grudem’s view (or the historic Pentecostal view of it, which Grudem expresses). Jim talks about getting both the heebies and the jeebies whenever the idea of fallible prophecy is presented to him. David tries to understand why, and in the process probably accidentally insults the majority of the free world a few times.

It’s the end of the year. That means you won’t have to endure any more flogging episodes in the year 2019. If that’s not cause for celebration, I don’t know what is. No, really, I’ve never understood celebration, or what causes it. Help.

Anyway, we have lots of weird end of year greetings and skits from some of our most infamous guests. After that, Jim and I discuss the new Star Wars. First we have a segment of discussing it with no spoilers (or at least nothing that can't be seen from the trailers, so that definition is slightly subjective), then Deep Voice Man comes in and tells you that we’re going to discuss spoilers and that you can skip ahead to the 01:45:00 mark to avoid them. David kicks the episode off by giving Jim a tasting of a beer in a style wherewith was not previously familiar. This is a brief segment because David doesn’t actually know 3 episodes worth of stuff about beer, and because listeners complain when we talk for 270 minutes about alcohol. We don’t have a problem; you have a problem.

For our main topic, we do a deep dive on Les Lanphere’s Spirit and Truth movie. Jim reveals that when he watched it, something happened inside of him—and in a Taco Bell way. We discuss the movie, what we liked, some criticisms, and then David tries to understand what the movie changed for Jim, who is reported to have been seen cage staging on worship in downtown Spokane—carrying a broadsword and quoting John Knox about Popish ceremonies.

Paperback Writer Parody Lyrics

Dear sirs at Crossway, will you read my book?
It took me weeks to write, will you take a look?
It’s based on some sermons by a man named Greer,
And I need the cash,
So I want to be a paperback writer.

It’s a gospel story of a broken man,
how he reads the Bible but can’t understand
His sin was ruling his heart since the Fall
He’s a Pharisee
But he wants to be a paperback writer

It’s 200 pages give or take a few
I could write some more in a week or two
I can add some stories if you like that style
I can change it 'round
And I want to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer

It’s my gift to preach, and not so much to write
This really needs an editors oversight
I wrote most of it while I was drinking beer
But I want some fame
And I want to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer

David’s Apology

I’m deeply sorry for having created this. But at least the lyrics still have more substance and less repetition than most modern worship songs.

Much like Presbyterian theology, our whiskey journey takes us from Scotland to America. We begin by tasting some Buffalo Trace. Jim seemed insistent that we have at least some amount of alcohol in our system before he let David do follow up.

For the main portion of our show, we discuss bourbon. Jim takes David up to a high mountain overlooking Kentucky and explains that everything the light touches is good. David, spotting Tennessee off in the shadowy distance with his eagle eyes inquires there about. ”That's beyond our borders. You must never go there, David.“ Jim replies. In this unexpectedly existing episode, we kick things off by exercising Jim’s rhetorical factories by requiring of him an oration on the topic of trees that is both impromptu and extemporaneous.

For our main topic, we decide to discuss the recent conversion of Kanye West. But less about the man himself and more about the idea of how hard it would be to try to convert while having as much fame as someone like Mr. West. It’s a fairly meandering discussion and—as you’ve come to expect from our show—quite useless. We recommend listening at 1/100th audio with cotton in your ears for a smooth, pain-free experience.

We kick things off with a rousing segment of Ask Bill Anything. And I have to say, this time, it’s all your fault. That’s right. It’s not our fault. It’s yours. You did this. Shame on you. Shame.

Moving past that disaster, we get into some follow up and then our main topic—which is emotions, mostly Jim’s because David wouldn’t know affect if it left him a voicemail. But it least it would have left him a voicemail. Thanks again.

Much like visiting a restaurant, this episode begins with soup—specifically, a question about the relationship between sharks and soup. After that, we dive into a hearty follow up segment, which of course includes an item about Kevin DeYoung. We really should get him on the show.

Our main topic is a pretty big one for the show. It may explain several past David-centered episodes, why he is the way is, and it may even prove to be virtually required listening for any future episodes where David talks about the way he is (or even those wherein he simply is the way he is). Basically, David took a questionnaire/test from Cambridge and the results have been profoundly enlightening.

We kick things off by redoing Soup or Naw—this time discussing things that are actually food. David gets to begin the process of establishing a definition of soup for the purposes of our show; Jim almost doesn’t mind. After that, of course, comes follow up. Honestly, I don’t remember much of what we talked about, but I’m guessing at least one point was about Kevin DeYoung.

For our main topic, we discuss Jim’s protestant problem and how he kind of wants to kill all the heretics or something. David points out Jim’s Baptist heritage and then we get in a fight. This leads to what is perhaps the most helpful sidebar we’ve ever had (or naw) and we then end up agreeing on some things so much that it will make you even more nauseous than the show was probably already making you—but now for different reasons.

For our main topic, we talk about those dadgum millenniums. Why are they the way they are? Why aren't they the ways they aren't? What ways are they? What ways aren't they? Will we ever take a long enough break from eating avocado toast to buy a house?

First, we read some poetry together. I'd this upsets you, know that it cannot upset you more than it upset David. Next we have a hearty follow up segment fraught with controversy, so the usual.

For our main topic, we talk about celebrity pastors. Given recent events, it's likely that everyone has discussed this to death by now, so the time seems right for us to break out the baseball bats and have at the dead horse. If you expected something better, you're clearly new around here.

Remember back when we were funny? Neither do we. Remember back when we did more parody ads and fewer weird skits? Pepperidge Farm remembers. And so do we. That’s why we start things off with a weird skit and an old school parody ad. Because when it comes to schools, there are not schools which are like those which are old.

Anyway, David might be back with the show—in an engaged sort of manner. He has lots of follow up, which, oddly, Jim was excited about. Absence makes the heart grow forgetful. After a flood of follow up and some talk of socialism, we finally reach our main topic: all the stuff outside of you that affects your cognition and emotions, especially sleep. It’s a catchy title, no?

We begin with a parody of a well-beloved podcast. You'll have to hear it to understand—then you'll have to unheard it to recover. Next we dive into followup, where Jim apologizes for mispronouncing “data,” and David apologizes for letting Jim turn last episode into kind of an ad for a web app that David hasn't even shipped yet. But it's no one’s fault. Remember that.

Inspired by David’s side-hustlin’ eryday, Jim has decided that he would like his own side with which to hustle. This lead to a series of shenanigans, not the least of which is Jim taking a bunch of free personality and aptitude tests, probably accidentally signing over his soul to Russia in the process. We discuss how to find a career/side-hustle and even dive a little bit into the topic of vocation.

As if that weren't enough, and of course it isn't since we're only putting out shows fortnightly this Summer, we decide to discuss Stranger Things Season 3 in our after-show. Don't worry, we warn about spoilers before we actually get started. What we don't warn you about is how dumb the conversation is. We figured that was implied by now.

For our main topic, we discuss why David has been seemingly cocooned for the past few weeks, learning about snakes. More seriously, we talk about the idea of changing or expanding one’s professional skillset, and the skills David is trying to learn to take on a fairly ambitious top-secret-but-not-secret-anymore-because-we-talked-about-it-on-the-show project. Jim makes weird noises into the microphone, David gets a new microphone, and then we discuss why David stopped writing. Masochists everywhere are calling this episode “so much fun.”

Breaking News: The United Nations has required us to cease producing episodes until they can evaluate our podcast and determine whether or not it is indeed a "war crime."

This may take some time as they are still trying to figure out if country music and man buns constitute the same offense.

We steadfastly believe that our podcast is a war crime and we will accept whatever punishment they give us. We look forward to it. We also look forward to providing you with more content once the ban has been lifted.

In the meantime, we suggest you find something useful to do with yourself, your ears, and your appendages.

In this episode, Jim kicks things off by trying to get David to do something he’s not very good at: laugh. They also spend some time talking about Jim’s phone-carrying habits, some followup items, and reading our first international iTunes review.

Our main topic is Jim’s desire to be a lone ranger and how his good cowboy daddy issues may have affected that. During this discussion we talk a lot about our introverted tendencies and inability to not tell jokes in large groups of people.

In this episode, we kick things off with a visual-aid assisted tour across the United States—podcast gold. We also introduce a much-needed, little-desired segment called follow-up—which will eventually envelope the whole show.

Perhaps most importantly, we did get to ten iTunes reviews, so you get to hear how why we picked our podcast name.

For our main topic, we put Jim on the psychiatrist’s couch and discuss how his unrequited pursuit of a pastorate affected his career and, you know, his emotions and stuff. We even manage to use the phrase "side hustle," so you know this is going to be awful.

We didn't mention (m)any links in this episode, but you should still go review us on iTunes. I’d like you, but if you haven’t done it yet, you don’t deserve a link.

You're not good at your job and everyone suspects it. It's only a matter of time until people in your life really notice how bad you are at everything and abandon you one by one.

If you've ever thought like this, you'll identify with our main topic, which is imposter syndrome or fear of incompetence—a fear which David has been realizing he's had most of his life. Jim grills him on the subject for your personal enjoyment.

Our intro is a surprise, so we can't tell you about it, because then you won't be surprised. Frankly the element of surprise is all this show ever had going for it anyway.

As I write these notes, I can't think of any mentioned links so go Google them for yourself. We're no help.

David kicks things off by bamboozling Jim and then reading some confessions, not the theological kind. They also talk a little bit about kidney stones, because those are kind of a big deal.

For the main topic, once we get past Jim’s subtle drug references, we discuss Jim’s relation to confessions, the theological kind. Specifically, our topic is confessoinalism. We attempt to define it, we discuss Jim’s affinity for confessions despite not having one, talk about what sorts of things he thinks should go into one, and of course get severely distracted along the way.

In the after show, we discuss Eternal Functional Subordination and Eternal Generation because of some things that come up during the main segment that we thought needed to be clarified.

To kick things off, David has an idea that is guaranteed to help keep the episode shorter and Wirecutter recommended.

For our main topic, after a couple of more serious, weighty episodes, we decided to ease back a bit and talk about our backgrounds in sales and marketing. We talk about lessons we’ve learned trying to convince people to buy things and then talk about how that might have affected our theology.

Lastly, in a segment that probably could have been an aftershow, we talk about churches using marketing techniques to bring get people to sit in their chairs and stay there.

In this episode, we kick things off by reading Mitch Hedberg quotes and making ourselves (and probably no one else) laugh. From there we dive straight into the metaphorical toilet and discuss depression and anxiety, and the roles those dark guests have had in our lives. As always, we make an effort to discuss how these things have affected our theology, just so we can say our podcast is still about what we said it would be about.

Can you imagine us as pastors? Well, believe it or not. At one point, we both imagined ourselves as pastors. In this episode, we discuss that and the effect it may have had on our theology and sanity.

In this episode, Jim learns to correctly pronounce "perspicuity," but at what cost?

For our main "serious" topic, Jim grills David on issues like the use of the word "reformed" to discuss New Calvinism and what it means to be reformed. After that, we chat about "Semper Reformanda" and then Jim bamboozles David into explaining his non-MacArthurianite cessationist views.

In this episode, The tables turn and Jim gets to interrogate David and ask him about all kinds of questions about how he got to be the way he is. Topics include moving from dispensationalism to new covenant theology to covenant theology, his journey into confessionals, and a rousing discussion of Federal Vision theology in the after show.

Also we finally say what our names are in this one, so there’s that.

In episode #1, we talked about ways in which we’re similar (being Calvinists). In this episode, we decided to start talking about how we’re different. To kick things off we talk about Matt Chandler’s use of the phrase “theological orphan” in relation to reformed charismatics, then we talk about how it relates to Jim in regards to his various theological distinctives

In the after show, David rants a bit about reading old books before reading new ones—or something like that.

We didn’t really mention any links this time, so chill out. Here’s a cool video, though, if you really must have something

Welcome to our very first episode of The Lightest Form of Flogging. We apologize in advance for any discomfort you will experience while listening.

Jim kicks things off by complaining about dumb theological quotes set on pretty pictures and placed on Instagram. After that, we stagger into our main segment, desperately trying to stick to the main topic, which is how we got to be reformed. This episode is sort of like a really lame origin story or something.
