In this episode, Mr. Minton has Dr. Kirk MacGregor on the podcast to talk about a view known as Open Theism, and what the biblical and philosophical issues with such a view are. Primarily they will be responding to arguments for Open Theism such as the argument that if humans have libertarian free will, God cannot foreknow our libertarianly free choices, as well as certain biblical proof texts Open Theists have marshaled in favor of their view. However, a positive case for God having foreknowledge of future contingent events is also made in this episode.

Many people wonder about what's going to happen to them after they die. The Bible teaches that Christians will go to a place God has prepared for us called Heaven, whereas those who don't believe in Jesus go to a place called Hell. Yet as many tough questions as the latter place generates, there are also many questions about the former as well, even from people who have gone to church for years! New Testament scholars treat John's gospel as largely a-historical when it comes to things Jesus said and did. This is even true of some evangelical scholars. For example, Craig Evans has publicly said that Jesus just sounds too different from how he talks in the synoptics, so John more or less paints an interpretive portrait of Jesus, making up things that Jesus never literally said in the narrative contexts we read about, but still vaguely captures some essence of what the historical Jesus taught. But how solid of a conclusion is this view? In this episode, Dr. Lydia McGrew offers a rebuttal.

In this podcast episode, we wrap up our series on the historical case for the reliability of the gospels. I will tell the non-Christian who has been convinced by the evidence and arguments surveyed in the series what he should do next. I also have a message for non-Christians who may be resisting the evidence for non-intellectual reasons. And finally, I have a message for Christians who may want to use this material in their evangelistic encounters. The Maximal Data Approach is not the unweildy, inefficient argument that many defenders of the Minimal Facts Approach (formerly including myself) have made it out to be. In fact, when all is said and done, the Maximal Data Argument for Jesus' Resurrection might be even better. Though I still think The Minimal Facts Argument for Jesus' Resurrection is still a good argument.

Continuing on with the audio blog series on the historical reliability of the gospels, I now turn to the issue of the historicity of Jesus' resurrection. Having previously established that the gospels are eyewitness accounts that are early (not to mention verified to be telling the truth on a variety of different occasions), we must answer the question as to why they claimed to have seen Jesus alive after His death saying and doing very specific things on a multitude of occasions. There are only three possibilities; they were either lying, mistaken, or telling the truth.

Continuing on with The Gospel Reliability Audio-Blog series, I examine the case against miracles. Are miracles really impossible? Or if they're possible, can they never be evidentially established? This is what the 18th century Scottish philosopher David Hume argued. In this episode of The Cerebral Faith Podcast, I will be giving my refutations of Hume, showing that miracles are both possible and are capable of being established as long as the evidence is good enough. While miracles have a somewhat low antecedent probability in isolation, that antecedent probability is not so low that a posteriori evidence cannot overcome it. This is important because in the next episode, I will be arguing for the historicity of Jesus' resurrection.

In this episode, I continue reading the essays I wrote as part of the Gospel Reliability series for the Cerebral Faith blog. First, I had an introduction episode, then we had an episode looking at the textual transmission of the New Testament documents. We saw in that episode that The New Testament documents were reliably preserved to 99.99% accuracy. Yes, the New Testament we have today is a near perfect copy of The New Testament that was originally written. And after that, we had a lengthy episode discussing the authorship of the gospels. We saw that there is every reason to believe that the tax collector Matthew wrote the gospel of Matthew, that John Mark wrote the gospel of Mark and used Peter as his source, that Dr. Luke wrote the gospel of Luke, and that John the son of Zebedee wrote the gospel of John. In this episode, we turn to the issue of dating. I make the case that the gospels were written much earlier than a lot of liberal scholars say.

I argue that the evidence from the early church fathers as well as evidences from within the biblical text itself strongly supports the view that the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were written by the people that bear their names, and therefore, that the gospels are based on eyewitness testimony.

In this episode, I get into the first installment, which really gets up to the meat and potatoes. I look at the evidence of the manuscript transmission tradition of the New Testament documents, and I ascertain that we can be confident that the New Testament we read today is the same as what was originally written down thousands of years ago. Contrary to what some claim, the New Testament documents have NOT been distorted to the point where we do not know what the original documents said.

Some skeptics of The Bible argue that the teaching that Jesus is God did not emerge until very late in the first century. Few skeptical New Testament scholars would deny that the gospel of John presents us with a divine Jesus. After all, not many (besides Arians and Jehovah's Witnesses) can read John 1 without seeing that Jesus is God, distinct from the Father, and is the Creator of all? But what about Mark's gospel? Whereas the latest gospel undoubtedly presents us with a divine Jesus, Mark's gospel, skeptics say, does not. Mark's gospel presents us with a merely human Jesus who is a prophet sent from God at best.

As a philosopher and theologian, Kenneth Samples is passionate about encouraging Christians to think. This is why he was disturbed when discovering this quote from Dennis Prager found in Kent Hughes’s, Disciples of a Godly Man.
“One thing I noticed about Evangelicals is that they do not read. They do not read the Bible, they do not read the great Christian thinkers, they have never heard of Aquinas. If they're Presbyterian, they've never read the founders of Presbyterianism. I do not understand that. As a Jew, that's confusing to me. The commandment of study is so deep in Judaism that we immerse ourselves in study. God gave us a brain, aren't we to use it in his service? When I walk into an Evangelical Christian's home and see a total of 30 books, most of them best-sellers, I do not understand. I have bookcases of Christian books, and I am a Jew. Why do I have more Christian books than 98% of the Christians in America? That is so bizarre to me.”

Are you aware that deterministic T.U.L.I.P Calvinism has more holes than a block of Swiss cheese and yet you find yourself not completely satisfied with typical Arminian soteriology either? While Molinism is not a soteriological view per se, it can be applied to one’s understanding of soteriology. The book of Job has long puzzled many Bible readers. It looks as though God's only reason for allowing Satan to torment Job is to win a bet against him. But perhaps the reason it appears this way is that we often think of the people in the conversation of Job 1 and 2 as just being God and Satan with Satan saying "I'll bet Job will curse you to your face if you removed the blessings you've given him" with God saying "That's not true. And I'll prove it to you." There's a third party in the discussion; The Divine Council a.k.a the heavenly host, a.k.a The Sons Of God. I believe that when this third party is taken into account, the whole picture changes.

In Episode 80 of this podcast, Evan Minton gave a syllogistic argument that God loves all people and that Jesus died for all people called "The Maximally Great Argument Against Calvinism". The argument was philosophical in nature, and yet each of the premises could be backed by scripture as well. However, there are also explicit passages in scripture that state that Jesus died for all. So one can go the roundabout way through Perfect Being Theology or just read The Bible. In this episode, Mr. Minton makes the biblical case for unlimited atonement; the view that Jesus died to atone for the sins of all people. The atonement is unlimited provisionally and limited in application. This is contrary to what Calvinists teach; that Jesus only died for the sins of the elect (i.e individuals God chose to unconditionally elect from eternity past). He examines many coherence objections Calvinists make such as that Arminian soteriology makes God a failure, that unlimited atonement entails universalism, and he takes on The Double Jeopardy Argument. He also takes head on passages Calvinists try to use to positively prove that Jesus only died for the sins of the elect. Listen to this episode and you will see that The Bible is not on the Calvinist's side when it comes to the extent of the atonement.

I wrote a blog post a couple of years ago titled “The Maximally Great Argument For Arminianism”which attempted to show that God’s universal salvific will logically flows out of Perfect Being Theology. The argument was formulated on my part out of frustration to convince Calvinists that God loves all people, wants all people to be saved, and desires salvation for all people. It doesn’t matter how many passages you point to that assert this in plain English (and plain Greek for that matter), they will find a way to twist them all to mean something other than what any objective interpreter would take them to mean. This text has fascinated Bible students for centuries. Who and what are the Nephillim? Who are these “Sons of God” who go into “The daughters of men” in order to produce them? And how is this in anyway related to the great deluge the rest of the passage and subsequent chapters narrate? There are 5 different interpretations of The Nephillim that scholars opt for: (1) The Sethite Interpretation, (2) The Neanderthal Interpretation, (3) The Ancient Kings Interpretation, and (4) The Angelic Hybrid interpretation. In this episode of The Cerebral Faith Podcast, Evan Minton will read his paper "Genesis 2 & 3: Adam and Eve As Archetypes, Priests In The Garden Of Eden, and The Fall". The paper makes an exegetical case for the following propositions (1) that Genesis 2 is a sequel to Genesis 1. (2) that Genesis 2 does not teach that Adam and Eve were de novo creations, but instead, that the accounts that speak of them being formed from dust and rib are features of archetypology. These facts of being formed from dust and Rib are not just true of Adam and Eve, but it is true of all of us. All men are made from the dust and all women are made from the side of men. Thus, Genesis 2 is not describing material human origins, rather it is describing aspects of human identity. (3) that Adam and Eve were not mere gardeners in an ancient sinless resort, but served as Priests in sacred space, (4) The serpent was a divine being and this explains why Eve didn’t find having a conversation with it odd, (5) that the sin Adam and Eve committed was not eating from The Tree Of Knowledge, but eating of The Tree Of Knowledge outside of God’s timing and for the wrong motives. (6) God’s curse of the serpent wasn’t a removal of his legs and giving him a diet of dust, (7) that while population genetics rules out all people being genetic descendants of Adam and Eve, it doesn’t preclude us from being their genealogical descendants.

In this episode, Evan Minton reads the first paper in his series of papers; The Primeval History Paper series. In this part of the series, Mr. Minton argues that contrary to being an account of natural history (whether taking place over 24 hour days or billions of years), Genesis 1 was never meant to be read as an account of material origins. Instead, Genesis 1 was meant to be read as an account of FUNCTIONAL origins over a 7 day period AFTER a period of material creation that preceded it. Moreover, this assigning of functions God does takes place for 7 days in which God inaugurates the universe to be His temple. These are the two main focuses of the text; God setting up the cosmos and His cosmic temple and assigning functions to everything. However, the author of Genesis also made it a point to take jabs at the pagan creation stories of his day while he was at it.

What happens if you're using The Kalam Cosmological Argument with an atheist and he throws out a cosmological model that might seem as though the universe always existed, thus premise 2 ("The universe began to exist") is false? What happens if you have never heard of it before? What happens if there either no scientific problems with the model, or at the very least you don't know what those problems are? In this episode, Mr. Minton will show you how you can respond to such challenges to the Kalam by "Going after the philosophical jugular". By that is meant that all eternal universe models suffer from the same problem; they are logically incoherent.

Annihilationism is the view that the damned in Hell are, well, annihilated. In episode 28 of this podcast, Evan Minton defended the character of God from several objections from skeptics based on the doctrine of Hell. He defended the eternal torment view of Hell and argued that this is not incompatible with God's nature. Minton no longer holds the view that the wicked in Hell are conscious for eternity. Minton is now an annihilationist. In this episode, Minton goes into the positive case that convinced him to change views.

Darwin VS. Moses, The Origin Of Man VS. The Book of Genesis, Science VS. Faith. Most people seem to think that you've got to have one or the other. If one is right the other is wrong. As we've seen in Evan Minton's series on Genesis, this is not true regarding the first chapter of Genesis, but what about the second chapter? Does Genesis 2 present a view of human origins that is hopelessly at odds with what we know from biology, genetics, paleontology and anthropology? How can someone accept The Bible and science at the same time if the scientific evidence seems to favor a view of human origins The Bible contradicts? Genesis 1 is one of the most widely disputed passages of The Old Testament. What is Genesis saying? In this episode, Evan Minton argues that Genesis 1 is not an account of natural history/material origins. Rather, Genesis 1 is about functional origins and about God inaugurating the universe as His temple in a time period of 7-24 hour days. God assigned functions to the things mentioned in Genesis 1 as part of inaugurating His "Cosmic Temple" which He took up His "rest" in at the end of the 7 day account. Minton believes that science is not conflict nor CAN be with Genesis 1 because Genesis 1 is not offering an account of material origins. Interpreting Scripture is about three things; context, context, context. There are different kinds of context when it comes to interpreting The Bible. There's "Immediate Context" which is to interpret a verse in light of the verses that come before and after, there's the context of scripture as a whole, and there's cultural context. When it comes to that last one, much homework needs to be done. Cultural context is reading a biblical passage the way it's original author and audience would have understood it, according to their cultural cognitive environment. Knowing the cultural context can sometimes let you see additional meaning to a passage or even to alert you to how you may have been reading something INTO the text something that was never there. In this episode, Evan Minton interviews Leading Old Testament scholar John Walton on his book "Ancient Near Eastern Thought and The Old Testament" which helps people to do just that.

Atheists pride themselves on being "Free Thinkers", but if atheism, and particularly the naturalistic version of it is true, can they or anyone else really be free thinkers? The guest in this episode is Tim Stratton of FreeThinking Ministries (www.freethinkingministries.com) says that if naturalism is true, no one, be they atheist or theist, can be free thinkers. When skeptics fail at finding a naturalistic theory to account for the minimal facts, they resort to a different tactic. In this episode, Mr. Minton responds to the argument that the resurrection of Jesus is so improbable, that the evidence given in favor of it is just simply not good enough to overcome that probability. This is known as "The Antecedent Probability Objection". Mr. Minton will argue that all of the evidence we have is indeed strong enough to overcome the a-prior probability against miraculous resurrections.

This is part 3 of 3 of a series on the historical case for Jesus' resurrection. In part 2, Evan Minton used The Principles/Criteria Of Authenticity that he laid out in part 1 to come to the conclusion that 5 propositions are historically true; (1) Jesus died by crucifixion, (2) Jesus was found empty the following Sunday morning, (3) His disciples sincerely believed that Jesus appeared to them alive after His death, (4) a church persecutor named Paul converted on the basis of what He perceived to be an appearance of the risen Jesus, and (5) that a skeptic named James converted to Christianity on the basis of what he perceived to be an appearance of the risen Jesus. How does one best explain these 5 historical facts? Did Jesus rise from the dead? Maybe, but perhaps we should see if a natural explanation works first before we conclude that. In this episode, Evan Minton comes to the best explanation by means of a process of elimination. He eliminates all of the bad explanations until only one remains.

In the previous episode, Mr. Minton explained the historical methodology he would be taking in defending certain facts about Jesus as actually being true, historical facts. He explained that he would be employing "The criteria of authenticity" to The New Testament just as non-Christian historians and scholars do in their examination of the historical Jesus. He then went on to argue that the historical Jesus believed himself to be divine. However, why should we believe him? After all, anyone can claim to be God, but that doesn't make it true. This is where the resurrection comes into play. If Jesus died and rose from the dead, then that is pretty good evidence that He was telling the truth. God would not raise someone who committed identity theft against him, knowing that doing so would validate those claims. In this episode, Evan Minton defends "The 5 Minimal Facts" surrounding the death of Jesus upon which an inference to the historicty of His miraculous resurrection can be made.
The minimal facts are (1) Jesus died by crucifixion. Minton argues that (1) Jesus claimed to be God,(2) died on the cross and (3) rose from the dead. Jesus' sermon in Matthew 24, also known as the Olivet Discourse, is one of the many biblical passages that comes up during discussions of the end times. Most Christians however, presuppose that everything Jesus prophesies has not yet been fulfilled, it's still in our future. This makes some excited when blood moons occur, when they watch the news and see all of the turmoil in the world, the "wars and rumors of wars", "famines and earthquakes in various places", and people who claim to be Jesus (because Jesus said near the end that many would say "I am The Christ") etc. But what if all of the end times speculation built around Matthew 24 is built upon a false presupposition? What if, in fact, Matthew 24 has already been fulfilled? In this week's episode, Mr. Minton reads aloud his paper "The Soteriological Case For Molinism". Molinism is a theological system that seeks to account for divine sovereignty and human freedom. Molinism is the view that God uses His knowledge of what any free creature would freely choose in any given circumstance to orchestrate every event that occurs without violating human freedom in the process. In last week's episode, Mr. Minton showed that The Bible teaches that human beings have libertarian free will, that God has middle knowledge, and that God meticulously controls all things. He showed how only Molinism can fully harmonize and account for all 3 biblical teachings. In the paper Mr. Minton is reading in this week's episode, he shows that The Bible teaches several facts about the doctrine of salvation, and that, while traditional Arminianism and traditional Calvinism can account for SOME of these biblical teachings on the doctrine of salvation, they fall short of explaining ALL of The Biblical data. Calvinists and Arminians often have to downplay or explain away some of the biblical texts. Molinism can account for everything The Bible teaches concerning soteriology. It doesn't have to explain away any biblical passage. Therefore, Christians who want to embrace the whole word of God ought to affirm it.

If God is in control, how can human beings have free will? On the other hand, if human beings don't have free will, how can God hold us morally accountable for the things that we do? The Bible teaches that God is sovereign over all things but also that human being are genuinely free to make decisions. The Bible itself doesn't give us the answer of how these two biblical teachings can both be true. To harmonize them is the task of systematic theology, not biblical theology. Molinism is a theological system that seeks to account for divine sovereignty and human freedom. Molinism is the view that God uses His knowledge of what any free creature would freely choose in any given circumstance to orchestrate every event that occurs without violating human freedom in the process. After weeks of surveying Argument's For God's Existence, Evan Minton has come to the end doing a series on of the series. He finishes off by talking about The Ontological Argument For God's Existence which was first formulated by St. Anselm. Many would be surprised to know that there are good reasons to believe that God exists. You don't have to take God's existence on blind faith alone. There's evidence for God. The Kalam Cosmological Argument is one of them. This argument, initially formulated by the 11th century philosopher Al Ghazali and popularized by contemporary philosopher Dr. William Lane Craig, argues to the existence of a Creator from the law of causality and the fact that the universe had a beginning to its existence out of nothing.
