He is also an expert in BIOMECHANICS, and the author of a ground-breaking new book called "The Physics of Resistance Exercise", which is turning the traditional weight training paradigm upside. Doug is the first person in the history of the fitness industry to outline the 16 biomechanical factors which determine the value of an exercise -- allowing us to evaluate the productivity, efficiency, and safety of each exercise. This allows us to select only the best exercises, and skip the exercises that have low value.

2020 sees the release of “The Fun Ones”, the 7th solo album in the constantly expanding RJD2 catalog. The album draws largely from that basic DNA of hip-hop, funk music, but taken to a level of sophistication not seen before from this guy. Heavy on the brass, plenty of thump, and some slicker than average chord changes all add up to a rollicking good time. On “One Of A Kind”, RJ links up with Homeboy Sandman to push the levels of syncopation into the red. On “Pull Up On Love”, longtime collaborators STS and Khari Mateen reconvene to bring the spirit of James Brown to the quintessential Atlanta rib shack. Jordan Brown steps in to bring a falsetto lilt over a cacophonous drum break that would leave Ginger Baker scratching his chin. And the duo who brought you Magnificent City(Aceyalone and yours truly) reform on “A Genuine Gentleman”, a futuristic Meter’s-esque groove with the king of west coast abstract rhyming. All in all, the album flirts with vocal stylings, but stays firmly on-task for the mission of propelling the world of modern funk and instrumental music forward. Assembled as a mixtape with samples taken from a number of conversations with his contemporaries, the album leads a secondary role as a themed statement on the subject of, well, I’ll let you figure that out. Dig in and enjoy!

Philosopher of mind Keith Frankish is one of the leading proponents of “illusionism,” the theory that argues that your subjective experience is a trick of the mind. It’s a counterintuitive theory, but Keith makes the case for it in this episode, while explaining the other leading theories of consciousness and why he rejects them. He writes mainly about the human mind and is well known for defending an illusionist view of phenomenal consciousness and a two-level theory of the human mind. He has authored two books -- a monograph on the structure of the mind and a textbook on consciousness -- and has edited several collections, including a volume of essays on dual-process theories of reasoning, handbooks to cognitive science and artificial intelligence, and a collection of articles on illusionism as a theory of consciousness. He is currently working on several new projects, including new two books on consciousness.

Gary Fettke, an orthopedic surgeon, was sanctioned in 2016 by regulators (the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency or AHPRA) for recommending a low-carb lifestyle to patients he felt could improve their health by changing their diets. As we wrote in November 2016, Dr. Fettke was officially ‘silenced’ by the AHPRA; this means he was forbidden to give diet-related advice to his patients.

The AHPRA has repealed its decision in its entirety and cleared Dr. Fettke of all charges. He also received a written apology:

Paul was one of the first women to work for the San Francisco Fire Department -- a job that inspired her first work of nonfiction, Fighting Fire. Prof Noakes has published more than 750 scientific books and articles. He has been cited more than 19 000 times in scientific literature, has an H-index of 71 and has been rated an A1 scientist by the National Research Foundation of South Africa for a second 5-year term. He has won numerous awards over the years and made himself available on many editorial boards.

In December 2010, Professor Tim Noakes was introduced to a way of eating that was contrary to everything he had been taught and was accepted as conventional nutrition ‘wisdom’. Having observed the benefits of the low-carb, high-fat lifestyle first-hand, and after thorough and intensive research, Noakes enthusiastically revealed his findings to the South African public in 2012. The backlash from his colleagues in the medical establishment was as swift as it was brutal, and culminated in a misconduct inquiry launched by the Health Professions Council of South Africa. The subsequent hearing lasted well over a year, but Noakes ultimately triumphed, being found not guilty of unprofessional conduct in April 2017. In Lore of Nutrition, he explains the science behind the low-carb, high-fat/Banting diet, and why he champions this lifestyle despite the constant persecution and efforts to silence him. He also discusses at length what he has come to see as a medical and scientific code of silence that discourages anyone in the profession from speaking out against the current dietary guidelines. Leading food, health and medical journalist Marika Sboros, who attended every day of the HPCSA hearing, provides the fascinating backstory to the inquiry, which often reads like a spy novel. Lore of Nutrition is an eye-opener and a must-read for anyone who cares about their health.

Erwan Le Corre is the founder of MovNat, a forward-thinking approach to fitness that finds its practical inspiration in humanity’s primitive roots. Le Corre and his team hold outdoor training workshops in West Virginia and Thailand, where participants rediscover, practice and master the movement skills of their nature-dwelling ancestors. Born in France, Le Corre is considered one of the leading pioneers of the international primal-fitness movement.

If we look at the overall movement behavior of contemporary, yet still technologically primitive hunter-gatherers, we observe that they have maintained, by necessity, a broad movement repertoire—the full range of Natural Movement aptitudes including running, crawling, jumping, balancing, climbing, throwing, catching, lifting, carrying, and occasionally swimming

Finally, MovNat is a lifestyle. It’s about being fit, yes, but it is also about eating naturally and living in a way that supports our vitality. Exposure to light and nature is important. Healthy relationships are important. Creating time for yourself is important. All of these environmental influences participate in your genetic expression, and your genetic expression influences how you look, how you perform and, of course, how you feel.

Author of The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability, Lierre Keith, joins me to dispel the three pillars vegetarians lean on to justify their dietary and lifestyle choices. Her book, published in 2009, is still widely discussed and referenced today. In this stirring discussion, Lierre reveals that just six corporations (who she calls grain cartels) own the world’s food supply and how they deceitfully market industrial by-products in the form of soy-based products, how global warming is NOT caused primarily by ruminants but rather by large-scale agricultural practices, and how modern agriculture is destroying our topsoil and our land in general. But she doesn’t stop there! She goes on to explain how proper use of grazing ruminants could actually be a solution to or environmental problems. That’s a message we all need to hear!.

What makes her story even more amazing is that Lierre was a practicing vegan for years. Luckily she realized she was slowly destroying her body by not consuming the vital nutrients necessary for good health. So, will going Vegan save your life and save the planet as is so widely believed? Listen to this podcast before you answer that question.

Last summer, EAST FOREST was invited to Maui to record brand new teachings from the late spiritual teacher Ram Dass. The album is released in four “chapters” throughout 2019, culminating in a full-length release on August 9, 2019. Trevor Hall, Stic of Dead Prez, Laura Bird of The Mynabirds, and Grammy-nominated artist, Krishna Das make guest appearances on the 14-track album, with remixes including Hammock, Christopher Willits among others. East Forest has trail-blazed a path in the wellness movement-building bridges between the digital and natural worlds.

His collaborations include Google and John Hopkins neuroaesthetics program, Consciousness Hacking, and Science And Nonduality (SAND), in addition to his weekly podcast series that offers discussions with thought leaders alongside musically guided original meditations. As a consistent pillar of his public offerings, East Forest offers face to face retreats for deeper immersive experiences both at the Esalen Institute where he is a faculty member as well as in his adopted home of the high desert in Southern Utah. His albums and collaborations have twice charted #1 (iTunes Aug 2016, and May 2019) as well as several Billboard top ten releases.

2019 also saw the release of a new long-form East Forest album, “Music For Mushrooms: A Soundtrack For The Psychedelic Practitioner” (May 2019), a remarkable 5-hour fully connected album experience designed to act as a ‘digital shaman’ to musically guide the psilocybin (the active ingredient in psychoactive mushrooms) experience in the rapidly progressing drug research studies occurring around the world. The album reached #1 on the iTunes charts after it’s release (iTunes May, 2019). RIP Ram Dass.

Dr. Wallace "J" Nichols - called a “Keeper of the Sea" by GQ Magazine, “a visionary" by Outside Magazine, a "water warrior" by AQUATICS International and a "friend of the sea" by Experience Life Magazine - is an innovative, silo-busting, entrepreneurial scientist, movement maker, renown marine biologist, voracious Earth and idea explorer, wild water advocate, bestselling author, sought after lecturer, and fun-loving Dad. He also likes turtles (a lot).

Dr. Nichols collaborates tirelessly to create the new story of water and share it with the world. This story includes the vast cognitive, emotional, psychological, social, physical, and spiritual benefits that we can all derive from healthy waters and oceans throughout our lives. In 2017 Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama presented the Champion of Change Award at the World Oceans Festival on Governor’s Island, New York to Dr. Nichols.

His current focus is on what he refers to as Blue Mind, a powerful new universal story of water. In this story society accurately describes all of the physical, ecological, economic, cognitive, emotional, psychological, physical, and social benefits of healthy oceans and waterways. By connecting neuroscientists and psychologists with aquatic experts and artists to ask and answer exciting new questions his work is transforming many sectors, including: health and wellness; education and parenting; arts, architecture and design; real estate and urban planning; travel and leisure; and sports and recreation.

His book Blue Mind, published in summer 2014 by Little, Brown & Company, quickly became a national bestseller and has been translated to numerous languages and inspired a wave of media and practical application.

Astronomer Jill Tarter is director of the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute's Center for SETI Research, and also holder of the Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI. She led Project Phoenix, a decade-long SETI scrutiny of about 750 nearby star systems, using telescopes in Australia, West Virginia and Puerto Rico. While no clearly extraterrestrial signal was found, this project was the most comprehensive targeted search for artificially generated cosmic signals ever undertaken.

Tarter serves on the management board for the Allen Telescope Array, a massive instrument that will eventually include 350 antennas, and that has already increased the speed and the spectral range of the hunt for signals by orders of magnitude. With the 2009 TED Prize, Tarter launched SETILive, a citizen project that allowed volunteers to stream live data from the array and help with the search.

Tarter's life work is chronicled in the book, Making Contact: Jill Tarter and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. She's deeply committed to the education of future citizens and scientists. Beyond her scientific leadership at NASA and the SETI Institute, Tarter has been actively involved in developing curriculum for children. She was Principal Investigator for two curriculum development projects funded by NSF, NASA, and others. One project, the Life in the Universe series, created 6 science teaching guides for grades 3-9. The other project, Voyages Through Time, is an integrated high school science curriculum on the fundamental theme of evolution in six modules: Cosmic Evolution, Planetary Evolution, Origin of Life, Evolution of Life, Hominid Evolution and Evolution of Technology. She also created the TED-Ed lesson, "Calculating the Odds of Intelligent Alien Life."

The founder of Ancestral Insight, Dr. Bill Schindler is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Archaeology at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, and the new Director of The Eastern Shore Food Lab. Currently, Dr. Schindler is on sabbatical and he and his family are living abroad in Ireland for a year while he researches for his book on ancestral diets via The Food Evolutions Project. Most recently, Dr. Schindler co-starred in National Geographic's series, The Great Human Race. As both a prehistoric archaeologist and experimental archaeologist his research and teaching interests revolve around a comprehensive understanding of prehistoric technologies including lithic (stone tool), ceramic, and fiber technologies and all aspects of prehistoric food acquisition, processing, storage, and consumption. Dr. Schindler is a strong advocate of traditional foodways and is constantly seeking new ways to incorporate lessons learned from his research into the diets of modern humans. He regularly speaks about and conducts workshops on prehistoric diets, fermentation, charcuterie, foraging, and butchering. His outlook on food has revolutionized the way in which he and his family eat and he attributes much of the health they enjoy to the hunted, gathered, and fermented foods that comprise a significant portion of their diets. Dr. Schindler resides in Church Hill, Maryland with his wife, Christina and their three children.

Foodmed.net publisher and editor Marika Sboros is one of South Africa’s top writers on medicine for health in body and mind. She started her career in South Africa at the Rand Daily Mail newsroom as a hard news general reporter, with a special interest in politics and religion. Later, Marika moved into newspaper production doing editing, sub-editing, layout, and feature writing on women’s issues, health and lifestyle. She has worked as health and lifestyle editor for other major newspapers in South Africa.

Most recently, she worked for Business Day, the country’s most influential English-language daily business publication. In eight years at Business Day, she set up and edited Health News, Business Day’s first dedicated broadsheet weekly health publication. The publication proved a hit with readers. Marika also built the health and travel sections for the BizNews website. She has worked in radio on her own health programmes. She has an eclectic interest in food, medicine, health and healing in body and mind. Bio-individuality being what it is, Marika says that there is no diet that is one-size-fits-all. And that nutrition science, like the rest of medicine, is as much art as science.

She began writing on low-carb, healthy, high-fat (LCHF) lifestyles in 2014 after she became aware of academic bullying (or mobbing, as it is now popularly known) of University of Cape Town emeritus professor Tim Noakes.

Marika was the only journalist to cover Prof Noakes’s trial that the public quickly dubbed the Nutrition Trial of the 21st Century. The trial began in 2015 and lasted more than four years at a conservatively estimated cost of more than R10-million for the prosecution side alone. Foodmed.net has devoted a special page to her reporting on the Noakes trial.

At the age of 14, don Miguel Jr. apprenticed to his father don Miguel Sr. and his grandmother, Madre Sarita. From that early age, he was called upon to translate Madre Sarita’s prayers, lectures and workshops from Spanish into English. In this way, through constant repetition and review, he learned the content of her teachings in both languages. Through interpreting for Madre Sarita, don Miguel Jr. came to understand the power of faith. He saw first-hand how she manifested her intent to heal people, both physically and spiritually. don Miguel Jr.’s apprenticeship lasted 10 years. When he reached his mid-20’s, his father intensified his training. At the apex of this powerful journey don Miguel said to his eldest son, “Find your way out. Go home and master Death by becoming alive.”

For the past 13 years, don Miguel Jr. has applied the lessons learned from his father and grandmother to define and enjoy his own personal freedom while achieving peace with all of creation. He is the author of the books: “The Five Levels of Attachment”, “Living a Life of Awareness”, “The Mastery of Self”, and “The Don Miguel Ruiz’s Little Book of Wisdom”. https://chrismasterjohnphd.com/nick to test your nutritional status!!!

Listen up friends!

Dr. Chris Masterjohn is a former podcast guest and Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences and just put the finishing touches on his Testing Nutritional Status: The Ultimate Cheat Sheet e-book.

This e-book packs everything you need to know about testing and customizing your supplement regimen all into one single document so you never need an appointment with Dr. Google and you never need to rummage through long articles, podcast transcripts, or endless lists of links again.

All of the lab testing required for comprehensive nutritional screening is reduced to a single page, with hyperlinks making ordering any of the tests just one click away.

In just five pages, Chris provides full instructions for lab testing, blood pressure, and dietary analysis. Over 70 pages list the signs and symptoms associated with all the possible nutrient imbalances, the potential causes of nutrient imbalances, and an action plan for correcting each imbalance.

To top it off, it ends with an index of the signs and symptoms of nutrient deficiencies and imbalances linked directly to the sections of the text where those signs and symptoms are discussed.

This makes it incredibly easy to browse through the index for the things that seem most interesting or relevant to you and find exactly what you’re looking for without having to read the whole guide. Thank you Chris!

James Geering is host of the Behind The Shield Podcast.

"I was born in England and spent almost thirty years there before emigrating to the U.S. My early years saw me in in a spectrum of jobs from lifeguard to stuntman. I had always dreamed of becoming a Firefighter but was told as a child that my poor color vision would disqualify me from the process. It wasn't until I moved to America that I realized that the vision deficit was mild and was a poor excuse for not following my dream. I promptly enrolled in the Fire Academy and the rest is history. I have been a Firefighter/Paramedic for fifteen years now and still love it as much as my first day on the job. I am also a Crossfit coach and a graduate from the University of Florida with a Bachelor's in Exercise Physiology and Kinesiology.

At the start of my firefighting career I felt invincible and thought that the only danger to my health would be in a collapse or burn over. As the years have progressed, I began to notice a trend of ill health in my profession. Retirees would pass away soon after they left. Young firemen got fatal illnesses and depression claimed the lives of many of my brothers and sisters. I incurred several injuries on the job despite being a lifelong athlete, realizing that my training was creating some glaring weaknesses. I started on a path of self reflection and ultimately healing, which took me to some of the greatest minds in the wellness world. Through questioning everything I had been taught, I began to deconstruct the entire fitness community and rebuild from the ground up. I realized that there was a giant void in the area of First Responder wellness. The advice and literature that was out there seemed outdated and disconnected from the rigors of shift life. There was only one solution; fill that void with the amazing knowledge I had encountered along my own journey of repair." - James Geering

Rick Strassman MD performed the first new human studies with psychedelic drugs in the US in over 20 years. His research involved the powerful naturally-occurring compound, DMT – N,N-dimethyltryptamine. Led to this substance through his earlier study of the pineal gland as a potential biological locus for spiritual experiences, he administered several hundred doses of DMT to approximately 60 volunteers between 1990 and 1995. He wrote about this research in the popular book, DMT: The Spirit Molecule, which has sold over 100,000 copies, has been translated into 12 languages, and is now available as an audio-book. It also inspired an independent documentary by the same name, picked up by Warner Bros distributing in Fall, 2011. With three distinguished collaborators, he co-authored Inner Paths to Outer Space, which looks more carefully at the common "other worlds" experience that volunteers frequently reported during his research.

Dr. Tommy John owns and runs the Dr. Tommy John Performance and Healing Center in San Diego and is the author of “Minimize Injury, Maximize Performance: A Sports Parent’s Survival Guide.” Tommy was drawn to chiropractic because he realized there was a higher element missing from the healing, performance process and proper function of the human body in the innate intelligence and the nervous system: brain, brain stem and spinal cord. That paramount observation led him to obtain his Doctor of Chiropractic Degree from Life University, (a 4-year program), in Marietta, Georgia, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude.

As the son of renowned Major League Baseball pitcher Tommy John who played in the Major Leagues for 26 seasons and was the first person to comeback in 1974 from the revolutionary surgery named the Tommy John Surgery, it is not surprising that Dr. Tommy developed a passion for proper healing and physical function as he witnessed firsthand the outcomes of injury, innovation and principled healing.

The primary goal of Dr. Tommy John Performance and Healing Center is to provide entire families with integrative, individualized care plans and treatment to improve their quality of life by reducing physical and emotional pain from injury and aging and minimizing the use of pharmaceuticals or surgery.

Dr. Jeff Volek is a registered dietitian and professor in the Department of Human Sciences at the Ohio State University. For the last two decades, he has performed cutting edge research elucidating how humans adapt to diets restricted in carbohydrate with a dual focus on clinical and performance applications.

His work has contributed to the existing robust science of ketones and ketogenic diets, their use as a therapeutic tool to manage insulin resistance, plus their emerging potential to augment human performance and resiliency. This research indicates that that well formulated ketogenic diets result in substantial improvements in insulin resistance and the myriad of cardio-metabolic biomarkers associated with metabolic syndrome, including favorable changes in fatty acid composition and saturated fat metabolism, cholesterol and lipoprotein profiles.
