What do you think?
Are you Always Becoming?
How would you finish this statement: “I AM . . . “

Are you a product of ‘nurture’ or ‘nature’?
Or, do you believe you are a “spiritual being having a human experience”?
Do you believe in a innate, natural drive to always be growing, toward self-actualization?

Do you have both a “real Self” and a “false Self”, or even multiple Selves?

Or, one Self, mostly, if not solely, a product of genes, heredity, and DNA?

Since a young child, I have had an interest in Psychology – which translates to Study of the Soul, but tends to refer to “personality”. My quest for knowledge in understanding the “I” in “I AM” is as strong as ever. And, I’m not the only one!

For centuries philosophers, theologians, mythologist, spiritual teachers, along with psychologists, have been on a quest for knowledge of Self, in search of the answers to: “Who Am I?” and “Are we Always Becoming?”

Join me and my guests as we explore these two questions. And be inspired by the personal Becoming stories told by guests who share the risks and the challenges, the successes and the letdowns, the joys and the heartaches they experienced while on their own Becoming journey.

Ending a intimate relationship does not have to be a extremely, maybe even traumatic, experience! Contary to what our society and culture wants us to believe, it is possible to move through the relationship ending process from a place of love, rather than from a place of fear. Our society has been sending us the message, through media, movies, stories, and music, that it is ‘normal’ to hurt your ex-partner. We have been feed the idea that we have to divorce not only our ex spouse, but the family members you have built a relationship with. That is very sad.

This is an incredibly special episode because it is with an incredibly special person in my life—my daughter Nicole. I have wanted to interview her for a while now. As I watch her travel her Becoming Path I have witnessed wonderful examples of “Manifestation” and “Creative Visualization”. Also examples of what it means to feel fear yet move forward anyway, following what resonates. Nicole had already created a life she wanted by living, working, and playing in Ybor City, Florida. She enjoyed the life she was living, having experiences that were important and necessary for her growth. But she knew she wanted more, something different. So, four years ago she quit the job she loved, moved out of the home she loved, and said her ‘good-byes’ to her family and friends. She gave away or sold ALL her belongs and got on a plane to Seattle with two suitcases. She tells us how, though hard at times, it all seemed “effortless” and fell into place with ease. Nicole says, “the Universe did not resist”.

Check out Nicole’s Etsy Shop where you will find tees, sweatshirts, other apparel with graphics she created herself. You can get a few “I got my COVID-19 Vaccine” button pins that were featured in several magazines.

Melissa is a mythopoetic writer and storyteller. What does that have to do with AlwaysBecoming? Melissa shares how myth gives us the language to find meaning in our lives and help us keep grow into who we are. Melissa has a wealth of knowledge about Carl Jung and shares what she thinks Jung would say if asked the question “Are we Always Becoming”. There is a chapter in Melissa’s Becoming Story where she started to question deeply engrained religious teachings, the very things she was told she could not question. Eventually she and her husband decided to leave Jehovah’s Witnesses, and suffered the consequences of losing their families . It takes courage to challenge your beliefs and follow your truth. Melissa Quaye is, in deed, incredibly courageous.

Get ready for an enlightening history lesson about the origins of ancient sacred dance. I first met Simona earlier in the year when I was on a search for something different. Some practice that incorporated mindfulness but was not your standard meditation practice or yoga practice. My husband was diagnosed with end stage liver disease and there were many times when it seemed we were going to lose him. I was filled with the intense, extremely uncomfortable, energy of fear, anxiety, even anger and I needed a way to release the energy and find peace with what was happening. Simona shares her knowledge of how sacred dance started, not as a form of entertainment, but as a way of uplifting the human soul, create healing and transformation. She shares how sacred dance is “a way to feel the connection to, what we call today, the Divine”. Simona is a true blessing in my life. Someone that I believe I was guided to by something much greater than myself.

This episode was recorded the day after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. We did not know that would happen at the time this interview was scheduled. As a writer, performer, director and Cultural Organizer, Andrea has spent a decade working on increasing awareness, visibility and support of Arab, Middle Easter/North African and Muslim Communities, and the ”Wars on/of Terror” in Afghanistan and Iraq. I asked Andrea for her thoughts about the Taliban take over and we have a frank, relevant discussion about the event, and the effect on the people of Afghan, Afghan women, and on our Warriors who fought and died in Afghanistan over the last 20 years. Andrea also talks about healing that comes from the artistic process and the revealing of hidden stories, sharing with us parts of her own Becoming Story of trauma in her childhood and her move to New York only 8 days prior to 911.

Look out for Part Two of the interview where Andrea talks about her recent diagnosis with the rare autoimmune disorder, Ankylosing Spondylitis. And we have the privileged of her reading the poem she wrote “Dear Vaccine”, which is about her experience with the disorder, and its relationship with the COVID vaccine.

Welcome to 2021. This is the first episode of the New Year. I had to cancel the interviews I had lined up for January because, literally, my becoming story was changing as the first sun of the New Year was rising. My husband became seriously ill, and is still in a life threatening condition. One of the most common themes of this podcast, and what all the guests share, is that adversity, hardship, or trauma marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next. And that is exactly what is happening to me. One chapter ending. A new one beginning.

Master Practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Issi Gispan, starts off the interview by saying “I’m on top of the world and still climbing!”. He shared that he started his quest for knowledge and training back in 1991, following a difficult divorce. Issi talks about the amazing power our own words have on our mind and body. He talks about how we tell ourselves stories about events in our past, and how NLP helps to change those stories, eliminating or reduce distressing symptoms like phobias, anxiety, even chronic pain. Issi is also a wonderful example of what I mean when I say “we are ALWAYS becoming”. Just last year, at 69 years old, Issi graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Holistic Health Sciences, and in February, just short of four months to his 70th birthday, he will be opening up his own private practice.

Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Assistant Director of Student Support Services at University of South Florida, Joseph Contes, shares with us parts of his Becoming Story and quest for knowledge. His Becoming journey has been shaped by his ethnicity, sexual orientation, and being the son of a Military service member. When describing the impact of having to move several times as a child, Joseph said “I’m like a potted plant. Locations may change but the soil remained the same”. Joseph informs us about the various programs at USF, that directly support and assist students who may be struggling with mental illness, low income, or who are emerging from the foster care system. Licensed Clinical Social Worker and author of the Now Cow children’s book series, Kelly Caleb, tells of a life altering event she experienced. She was hit by a drunk motorcyclist, causing her car to flip over multiple times, before plunging her down a 30 foot ravine. She miraculously survived. The driver who caused the accident did not. We never know what the next chapters of our Becoming Story will hold. For Kelly, this horrifying trauma led to months of recovery, using meditation and mindfulness to cope with the anxiety. And during this time of her recovery, she wrote the first children’s book, “Now Cow Helps Drama Llama: A Mindful Tale for Coping with Anxiety”. Kelly also shares about the suicide of her friend’s 13 year old son, and how 10% of the proceeds of her books are donated to Operation Jack’s Village. You will also hear about Kelly, the psychotherapist, who uses Accelerated Resolution Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Mindfulness to help people who are experiencing anxiety and addiction.

I encourage you to check out Now Cow books. Not only are they wonderful stories that give your children the tools to manage life’s challenges, but also are beautifully illustrated. They would make perfect gifts for all the special children in your life. Available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

This is the first of a series of episodes where I share some of the chapters in my own Becoming Story. We move through our life journey in phases or stages. They are the points on our lifeline that mark a transition in to and out of the chapters of our lives. Just like reading a book, we don’t know what is in the next chapter. We don’t know all the characters that may enter or which ones will leave. We don’t know all the events that will occur— the wins and the losses, the successes and let downs, the joy and the heart break. And through it all there are lessons learned, personal growth, and a greater understanding of what our purpose is. For me, there has been certain books that I read during each chapter of my life that has guided me, added to my understanding, and prepared me for what was to come in the next chapter.
In this first episode of the series, I share the chapter of my life that started in my late teens into my twenties. Some of the decisions I made set me in a direction that was not always the best for me, but I found my way back. I talk about the “crisis of faith” that occurred when introduced to the works of various theologians, and philosophers. One of the books that had an influence was “Love and Living”, by Franciscan Monk, Thomas Merton. I share about what I was learning, how I was starting to understand concepts of consciousness, Inner Self, True Self, creative visualization, and what is referred to as “manifestation”.
I share these things in hopes that it may inspire you, give you hope, help you learn and grow on your own Becoming journey.

We cannot ignore the fact that developmental stages of life that include physiological changes in our bodies influence our “Becoming”. Retired psychotherapist, Christina Bellamy, talks about the transition that occurs through a woman’s life as she moves through the stages of perimenopause to post-menopause. This is an important part of the Becoming process, as cultural and societal norms can shape how a woman may view herself, impact her emotional and mental well-being, and the health of her relationships. Christina teaches us about how this stage of a woman’s life has been viewed through the years, in society, culturally, and within the medical profession. Christina talks about how couples are affected and how they can cope with, what she describes as, the possible “emotional tsunami”. Christina helps us celebrate this time in women’s lives through her words of humor, support and inspiration.

Federal Aviation Commercial Drone Pilot, Lizette Matos-Rosalez’, talks about “reinventing” herself many times through out her life. Lizette’s Becoming Story is one of resiliency, getting knocked down, but getting back up each time. Lizette realized her dream of becoming a professional dancer in her 20’s. Then built a career and business in the mortgage industry – until, in 2008, she lost everything over night when the housing market crashed. Lizette shares how she would have been homeless if not for the help of her younger brother. She picked herself up again-creating a Event Management company in Las Vegas. Then, again, at no fault of her own, her business was threatened when COVID hit, and a year of scheduled events were completely wiped out. But, remarkably, Lizette had just completed attending Drone Technology School, so she and her husband shifted focus and started a new business, BZB Aerial Media Company.
Lizette’s Becoming Story shows us that no matter how many times you may fall, you can pick yourself up again, and you do not have to keep doing the same things. You can re-invent yourself. You can have many dreams and live many dreams in one lifetime.

Is it possible to be ‘always becoming’ even in prison? Of course, it is! Christina Bellamy, a retired Licensed Mental Health Counselor, talks to us about her work in Colemen Prison—the largest Federal penitentiary in the country. Since 2001, she has been a volunteer facilitator of the Alternative to Violence Project (AVP), providing hundreds of workshops, and teaching incarcerated prisoners how to be co-facilitators of the program.
An avid composter and gardener, Christina refers to herself as “Composting Christina”, a name that she created when working in the prison. She uses these activities as analogues of the Becoming process, telling us that both involve “transformation, diversity, inclusion, hard work, a natural process that honors what is there…and letting go of the results”.

Pediatric and Prenatal Chiropractor, Dr. Sara Bober, shares her personal lived experiences that includes overcoming family trauma and her own self-limiting beliefs. As she speaks it becomes clear that she is also very proud of her parents ‘Becoming’ process. She tells how it was always assumed by her family and herself, that she would become a pediatrician, and even majored in pre-med in college. But after being introduced to chiropractic care to treat her severe headaches, she realized her true authentic path was to become a chiropractor herself.
I have been watching Sarah’s more recent “becoming” unfold on Instagram, and was impressed with her positive energy and enthusiasm. I also found out after our interview that she is good friends with my niece/God-daughter. It truly is a small world.

UPDATE: Wow. I just found out Sarah is a friend of my beautiful niece and God-daughter, Josie S. We had no idea until after the interview. Just another example of how small the world really is.

Owner of Transformational Consulting and author, Gary Teeney, shares with us his career journey, as he evolved from working in advertising and becoming the owner of two radio stations before 30 years old, to 30 years of experience as a business consultant assisting well known clients, such as Disney and Coca-Cola. Gary says he helps clients “gain access to their power”, “illuminate the path toward their goals”, and supports them as they manifest their goals. Gary tells us that his own transformational shift occurred when he stopped being a salesperson and started partnering with his clients. He attributes his success to having mentors that helped him see “the bigger picture”.
Gary was my business coach a few years back. He helped me create a vision for how I wanted to grow my therapy practice, but also started me on the path of writing a book “Conscious Partings – Ending Your Relationship from a Place of Love”, which I am still in the process of writing. Gary and I talked about me doing a podcast one day, so he has played a pivotal role in my own personal ‘becoming’ story.

Entrepreneur, and host of the Soul Collective podcast, Emily Harris, shares her personal Becoming Story and transformation from being a successful business woman in corporate America, living the “American Dream” to living a life of authenticity, as founder of Soul Media, Soul Women’s Collective, and as a Business and Marketing coach.
Emily talks about her “dark night of the soul”, and “awakening”, realizing that she had been out of alignment with her core values of authenticity, vulnerability, and compassion. She also explains that all the people that come into our lives are “beautiful mirrors into our own consciousness”, who shows us where we need to work on ourselves.
I love how she said “life is not something happening to me, it’s happening for me”.

Psychologist and Psychotherapist, Dr. Lisa Martin, talks about “marginalized identity”, “intersectional identities”, and the, often traumatic experiences of being “pushed to the edges” of society. Dr. Martin explains that minority groups are often defined by others, leading to shame, oppression, and disempowerment. She explains how the power of words, that label and try to define groups of people, are harmful to the person’s sense of self identity.
Using a strength-based approach in therapy, Dr Martin helps her clients find new words and language to describe their own identities. Words that are validating and empowering, and that express the true resiliency of the individual and the marginalized groups that he or she identifies with.
This episode was recorded prior to the murder of George Floyd, whose death shed more light on the effects of Critical Racial Trauma and racism that is real in in the US and globally.
