FEATURED GUESTS: Julia Vering is a performance artist and musician, licensed clinical social worker and Registered Expressive Arts Therapist based in Kansas City. She has integrated the arts into social work for 20 years, centering her practice in joy, humor, imagination and the strengths perspective. Vering began experimenting with video-based drama therapy techniques while working at a nursing facility in 2004, and noticed that residents with dementia had decreased agitation, increased spontaneous communication and increased joy while engaged in this improvisation.
Residents loved watching themselves in the “movies” they starred in. She continued to hone this method, incorporating fill-in-the-blank scripts, green screen technology and live performance participation via video projection. She has received grants from The Charlotte Street Foundation and Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts for her community-based performance work involving collaborations with older adults and people with neurocognitive disorders. Vering tours and releases albums as “Unicorns in the Snow”, a performance art project that integrates interactive projections, stop-motion animation and original music. Vering has worked in hospice and long-term care settings for the last 17 years.
She opened her private practice, Expressive Arts Therapy KC in 2022, serving children through seniors individually, pediatric palliative care patients in their homes, and groups in nursing facilities. Vering's expressive arts groups engage nursing facility residents in reimagining vintage movies and musicals through improvisational play. She became the first Registered Expressive Arts Therapist in the state of Kansas in 2023 and serves as the Kansas State coordinator for the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association. She integrates expressive arts, psychodrama and EMDR into her practice, and is currently creating a workbook and film on performance art interventions for people with neurocognitive disorders.

He is passionate about helping small business owners take control of their finances with improved efficiency. In today's episode he shares 3 things business owners need to know about accounting as it relates to operating profitably. He also shares what to look for in an accounting platform.
Wave is a free intuitively designed accounting platform. Prior to upgrading to an electronic health record, I used Wave exclusively to operate my practice. I had tried a competitors product, which I spent a lot of money on, and felt defeated every time I used it. Like, to-the-point-of-tears defeated. Thinking-there-was-something-wrong-with-ME defeated! Then another art therapist introduced me to Wave. She raved about it! I immediately signed up and began using their product. It literally SAVED me HOURS and HOURS of time and frustration. I was no longer crying after reconciling my billing each week. Did I mention that it is FREE! Yes, they have some paid for services integrated if you need, but all the basic stuff is absolutely free and designed for small business. You can even add your company branding which makes sending invoices polished and professional.

FEATURED GUEST: {ENCORE of EPISODE 30- Briana MacWilliam}
I first learned about my next guest a few years ago at the 2018 AATA conference in Miami. I was talking with a colleague about my plans to create this podcast and consultation business and they asked if I had spoken with Briana MacWilliam.
Nope. Had not even heard of her. My colleague highly encouraged me to look her up to see how she had been able to develop a successful online platform as an art therapist. Then another colleague asked if I had heard of her. Then my last graduate student intern told me she had Briana as a professor and said, "everything she had to say was GOLD!" With that endorsement, how I could I not check her work out!
I found her Instagram page @brianamacwilliam and was blown away. I have been following her ever since. Honestly, when I reached out to invite her to be a guest I didn't expect her to respond AND I am soooo happy that she did.
Briana MacWilliam is an author, educator and licensed and board-certified creative arts therapist with more than 14 years clinical experience, helping adults with insecure attachment styles go from self-doubting to self-sovereign, and call in the “soul-shaking” passionate partnerships they want, without years of talk therapy, and no results. She has also published two textbooks on the topics of attachment and complicated grief, and working with LGBTQ populations. Currently, she maintains a small practice, but primarily offers courses online in self-help and personal development, as a love and attachment coach. She’s also the director of continuing education for Pratt institute’s creative arts therapies department.

Leanne Domash, PhD is a psychologist/psychoanalyst, playwright and Embodied Imagination practitioner. She has had a life-long interest in the creative process and has written and/or presented nationally and internationally on art, architecture, writing, wit and humor, theater, and spirituality as they intersect with the psychotherapeutic process.
The aim of her recent book -- Imagination, Creativity and Spirituality in Psychotherapy: Welcome to Wonderland -- is to awaken creative desire and expand the imagination of the clinician and in turn, his or her patient. However, the book can be read by anyone wanting to solve problems --whether artistic, scientific or relational -- in more open and original ways. Dr. Domash brings the reader into a transitional space, an in-between reality, that allows deep exploration and access to new ideas. She illuminates the use of Embodied Imagination, a dreamwork technique that helps the individual break dysfunctional patterns and view his or her life with new perspective. The destructive effect of trauma on the imagination is explored and strategies given to address this. Using interdisciplinary exploration – from Kabbala and bible stories to biology and neuroscience -- Dr. Domash helps the reader view the world through a metaphorical lens as he or she continues to grow, expand, dare, take risks, and even, leap into the unknown.
Dr. Domash is Clinical Consultant, New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis; Voluntary Psychologist, Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center, NY, NY; and Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, NY, NY.
In this episode, we discussed concepts and their applications in psychotherapy from her recent book. Dr. Domash along with Jarred Sharer, will be presenting at the upcoming Expressive Therapies Summit on the topic of Spirituality, Creativity & Dreamwork in Psychotherapy.

Neimeyer has published 30 books, including Techniques of Grief Therapy: Assessment and Intervention and Grief and the Expressive Arts: Practices for Creating Meaning, the latter with Barbara Thompson.
The author of over 500 articles and book chapters, he is currently working to advance a more adequate theory of grieving as a meaning-making process, both in his published work and through his frequent professional workshops for national and international audiences.
Neimeyer is the Editor of the respected international journal, Death Studies, and served as President of the Association for Death Education and Counseling. In recognition of his scholarly contributions, he has been granted the Distinguished Research Award, the Distinguished Teaching Award, and the Eminent Faculty Award by the University of Memphis, elected Chair of the International Work Group on Death, Dying, and Bereavement, and given the Research Recognition, Clinical Practice and Lifetime Achievement Awards by the Association for Death Education and Counseling. Additionally, he is a published poet.
In this episode, Robert and I discuss the need for additional education to be included in the training of therapists on the topic of grief and loss. He shares his thoughts about how
"slowing down" in therapy actually speeds things up to create transformational moments with clients.
He additionally shares about the work of his colleagues and himself providing experiential training on expressive methods for transformative meaning-making in grief work at the Portland Institute for Loss and Transition.
We talk a bit about the Grief Track (10 workshops) being offered at the upcoming Expressive Therapies Summit, Los Angeles, event. He will specifically be teaching on Writing Through Bereavement: Reconstructing Meaning & Loss at the event.

In this Voices From The Summit 2021 Episode, guest host, Dr. Rachel Brandoff, interviews the Creative Psychotherapist Podcast host, Reina Lombardi. Dr. Brandoff was a previous guest on Episode 4 How Speaking at a Conference Can Garnish a Publishing Deal. Dr. Brandoff has been a source of enduring support and encouragement throughout Reina's career. It was the result of a conversation with Dr. Brandoff that breathed life into the idea of opening her private practice.
In this episode, they talk candidly about Reina's birthing process of creating a private practice. Moreover, they discuss how small, deliberate and consistent steps in the direction of your goals contribute to it becoming reality. They go into the work of overcoming and working through personal fears and self-limiting beliefs as central to pushing out into Entrepreneurial endeavors. During the interview, they spoke about Reina's passion for food and cooking. Dr. Brandoff suggested that Reina share her recipe for Osso Bucco in the show notes. Shared is Reina's favorite recipe, by chef Tyler Florence.
At the 2021 LA Expressive Therapies Summit, Reina will be teaching a Masterclass on April 20, 2021 from 9AM - 4PM called Private Practice Essentials for Creative Arts Therapists: What They Don't Teach You in School. While graduate schools prepare us to provide clinical treatment, they rarely teach the necessary skills for launching and building a solo clinical practice. This primarily didactic 6-hour master class is for you if you are thinking about launching your own practice, or if you are new to the world of private practice. Participants will learn business planning basics, such as how to determine an appropriate business structure and how to estimate start-up expenses. Attention will be given to understanding the clinical relevance of having a "money mindset" in private practice, and how to calculate your desired income, as well as set your schedule and fees, based on your expense estimate. We will briefly discuss ethical and legal considerations for successful integration of telehealth into practice. Marketing is another essential skill that is important to develop—especially if you don't already have a long list of potential clients—and it's an activity that is likely the most intimidating aspect of practice-building for most. Various marketing strategies will be presented and—since we're therapists, after all—how to determine which strategy might fit best with your personality style. We will also touch on critical legal issues you'll need to consider if you are going to hang out your own shingle. Participants will leave the session with a realistic sense of what it takes to get started (and be successful) in private practice, along with practical guidelines and tools to get them headed on their practice-building journey.

In this solo episode, host Reina Lombardi, shares the 3 things she consistently does at the end of each year to reflect upon successes of the year and to plan for more successes in the following. Year-end rituals and practices can become things you look forward to in your business. Reina uses both practical, data driven and creative activities in her evaluation and planning process. The data gives a clear picture about what is working within the business, where the strengths are, and areas in need of improvement or tweaking. The creative visualization exercises offer an opportunity to visually explore areas within the business that might be further developed and explored in the New Year.

In this Solo Episode, I share the 3 biggest benefits I have experienced by being part of a paid Mastermind Community.
I love having guests on the show, but sometimes things don't line up correctly. Interviews get cancelled or rescheduled. Recordings have technical errors or in some cases they don't convert properly and get lost in the ether. This was definitely one of those weeks.
A Mastermind group consists of a group of likeminded professionals who meet to discuss business. They essentially mentor and support one another's professional growth. Typically, they are paid groups. While some people may be skeptical about the benefits of paying to be part of a group - I assure you there are many benefits. I have participated in both a paid and unpaid group. Without a doubt, I have gained significantly more from being in the paid group. I attribute this to the fact that people more consistently show up and prioritize participation as they are financially invested in the process. In this episode I share about my experiences with both paid and unpaid groups and highlight the top 3 benefits of participating in a paid group.

Mindstead founder, Marie Leznicki, has always cared deeply about human potential and personal growth. Having benefited from counseling, coaching, and complementary approaches herself, Marie wished more people had access to the exercises, worksheets, and activities used in one-on-one sessions without the stigmas and challenges of time and cost attached. And, with that, the idea for Mindstead was born.
According to their website, " Mindstead is the world's first marketplace of personal growth tools. It’s Etsy for your mind: Find bite-sized worksheets, exercises, and activity guides to help you become an even better version of yourself from acclaimed therapists and coaches like New York Times Best Selling author Rick Hanson PhD, TED star Dr. Shauna Shapiro, and others you have yet to discover." Marie and I talked about the development of the website as well as how self-help tools can serve as a bridge to move potential clients from hesitant to ready to make the call for therapy. The marketplace provides an opportunity for therapists to sell digital self-help and self-growth tools and activities without having to do any of the marketing. RESOURCES:

With extensive international speaking and training experience in experiential approaches to treating attachment trauma, Marshall particularly enjoys discussing the use of sandtray therapy within a trauma-informed context. Presently, Marshall primarily conducts supervision and consultation sessions with counseling professionals. He is EMDR-certified and applies this, and other trauma approaches to implementation with diverse populations. He is nearing the completion of his Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy. In this episode, Marshall shares how he has taken an integrative approach to weaving the healing approaches he is most passionate about into all of his therapeutic endeavors. He speaks to the vulnerability of what it is to embark on the journey of becoming something more within your professional identity - the transition from therapist to leader and trainer of therapists. Additionally, he speaks about the importance of considering the needs of both the self and the clients as we make decisions to shift professionally. I definitely appreciated this perspective. Marshall has created a GORGEOUS space called The Workshop, in Austin, Texas. He will be hosting interactive trainings, supervision and open studio style events for expressive and playful therapists. The care and consideration that went into designing the space is brightly evident. The passion he has for his work shines through each of his thera-preneurial endeavors. Voices From the Expressive Therapies Summit Episode 1
I have been asking Barry to be a guest on the show to talk about the Expressive Therapies Summit
before I even had any podcasting equipment in 2019. The idea for TCP had been brewing for several years before I began taking the necessary action steps to bring it to life. I learned that Barry, similarly had the idea for the Summit percolating within him for decades before the opportunity to breathe life into it was ripe.
Barry M. Cohen, MA, ATR-BC began his career in the helping professions as a Child Life Specialist at Yale/New Haven Hospital in 1979. In 1982, while Director of Expressive Therapies at Mount Vernon Hospital, Alexandria, VA, he developed the Diagnostic Drawing Series (DDS), a standardized art assessment and award-winning multicenter research project, still in use worldwide. Cohen is the author/co-author of numerous journal article sand chapters, and co-authored/co-edited three books, including Telling Without Talking: Art as a Window into the World of Multiple Personality, and the workbook, Managing Traumatic Stress through Art, both published in 1995. He has taught extensively in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands. A professional conference planner and consumer fair promoter, he produced and chaired the Eastern Regional Conference on Trauma and Dissociation (1989-1996) and was Conference Manager of the American Art Therapy Association's 2006 and 2007 conferences. Barry joined Expressive Media as Executive Director in 2008, and introduced its Institute of the Arts in Healing Spring Institute in 2009, then founded the annual Expressive Therapies Summit in 2010. In 2013, with Eliana Gil, he co-founded the Mid-Atlantic Play Therapy Training Institute, an annual conference held just outside Washington, DC. In 2017, Barry co-founded the annual Expressive Therapies Summit: Los Angeles conference with Ping Ho of UCLArts & Healing.

I first learned about my next guest a few years ago at the 2018 AATA conference in Miami. I was talking with a colleague about my plans to create this podcast and consultation business, and they asked if I had spoken with Briana MacWilliam.
Honestly, when I reached out to invite her to be a guest I didn't expect her to respond, AND I am soooo happy that she did.

Phillip Clark is the Founder & President of ENABLE Special Needs Planning, LLC. He created ENABLE thanks to the positive influence of his younger sister, Sarah, who has Down syndrome. Phillip began his career in the financial services industry with the intention of helping families with children with Special Needs Plan for their futures. He quickly realized that the industry’s standard approach to Special Needs Planning was very different from the way his family had planned for his sister’s life.
Traditional Special Needs Planning only helps families prepare for what will happen to their child when the parents are no longer around to provide for him or her. While creating a transition plan is absolutely essential, Phillip knew that the primary purpose of Special Needs Planning should be finding ways for individuals with special needs to live purposeful, impactful lives every day, based upon their own unique abilities, dreams, and goals.
Phillip and I talk about his business and the 5 types of planning he and his team help facilitate and the importance of networking and collaborating with other businesses serving similar clients in different ways. If you serve clients with special needs, you are going to want to tune into this episode.

Back in January I hosted a Vision Board - Goal Setting workshop at my practice. That is where I met my next guest, Jenny Boyd. I can't speak for Jenny, but I know my goals have taken a wee bit of a detour since March.
Jenny is an award winning brand and graphic designer. With a background in director level leadership in brand management and art direction, she has been recognized in the areas of product innovation, as well as brand and editorial design. She enjoys making things come to life with her designs. Bringing a positive energy and an understanding that true art is in the details, Jenny takes great pride in her work and continues to strive to bring all of her projects the dedication they deserve. She is the founder of JennyBCreative, a graphic design and branding firm located in Cape Coral, Florida. And she is the co-host of "Deep Thoughts on Marketing" on Youtube, where she and her co-host Mary-Anne Cipressy share educational tips about marketing.
In this episode, Jenny shares about the 8 Parts of Branding. Who knew there were 8 parts? I didn't! She also shares other valuable tips about marketing your business. I learned a lot from her and I hope you will, too!

Episode 27 is all about Marketing! Our next guest, Joel Connor, shares Industry-Expert Tips on Using SEO to make your website STAND OUT!
Joel Conner is the founder and director of Blue Swing Media & Epiq Video where he and his team use their digital marketing skills to help small businesses get seen on the web. When Joel started out as a web designer almost a decade ago, he used simple content marketing to rank his services on google. This included writing an occasional blog post, sharing a few things on Facebook, and listing his business with local directories. Over the years his web design firm grew and became more of a typical “we do everything under the sun” digital marketing agency. This came about because their client’s pretty websites on a brand-new domain were often lost in the vast ocean of the world wide web. They began helping their clients grow their web presence without charging the astronomical fees that other agencies would quote them for “SEO.” Paying a thousand dollars a month for content marketing makes perfect sense if you have a product or service that may bring in several thousand dollars a month per new client/sale, but not if your product is $10-$50 and you’re not currently being found online. So, after learning and testing PPC, Social Media Marketing, SEO, Backlink building, blogging, Video marketing and just about every other element of the digital marketing footprint, he found that “Content Marketing,” was by far one of the best investments for business when done properly. Since then he and his team have been dialing in best practices for how to best leverage content creation for their clients as well as their own projects. They are also expanding into professional video production with their newly launched Epiq Video brand.
If you are anything like me, I knew nothing when it came to marketing when I first started. Really! I didn't even give myself credit for the work I was doing to market my business, because I didn't know it was marketing. I've learned a lot since then. The tips that Joel shares in this episode are incredibly valuable for those who know very little about websites and search engine optimization (SEO).

Does the word Accounting, send you running? Not to fear, my next guest shares how easy it is to take control of your business accounting needs using Wave. David Axler, is the VP of Strategy and Business Development at Wave Accounting.

The current pandemic is creating a global scale traumatic event peppered with myriad micro traumas. It is impacting everyone in varying degrees. For those able to manage and integrate their emotional experiences, they may come out on the other end without any negative psychological effects from the experience. While others may surface experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. This may be especially true in areas of the country and world experiencing the highest number of illnesses and within the community of medical professionals on the front lines caring for them.
Given the circumstances,
Nicole Porter Davis and I thought it may be helpful to create this series on large scale trauma response. Today we talk about the role of Social Connection, for both client and therapist. We also discuss the role it plays in personal and professional emergency preparedness.
This is going to be the last episode of the series for now. The next two topics seem more appropriate to discuss after we get through the current circumstances.

Nicole has published several helpful articles about trauma response on Thrive global. You read all of her articles, including "Magic of the Metaphor" where she shares a short story she created to help her child understand the pandemic and all the changes she is experiencing. https://thriveglobal.com/authors/nicole-porter-davis/
Given the circumstances, Nicole Porter Davis and I thought it may be helpful to create this series on large scale trauma response. This episode is all about the role of the therapeutic relationship in trauma response work. We discuss ways in which to deepen and enhance the therapeutic relationship.

Nicole Porter Davis, ATR-BC, LPC, LCAT is today's guest. She is the founder of Emerald Sketch ART, inc. The Emerald Sketch’s global mission is to work with children and families within their communities to heal symptoms of post traumatic stress and complex grief when devastated with unforeseeable tragedy. It grew out of Nicole's work responding to the tragedy at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012. Since then she has taught other clinicians how to quickly mobilize and find funding to support creative arts based trauma response treatment programs following various large scale traumatic events. In addition, she is the President Elect for the New York Art Therapy Association. On the show today she shares about how she created the trauma response team and secured funding to support continued care after she left.
This is episode 1 of an 8 part series dedicated to trauma response. We thought it was helpful to ground the series with our original interview. In the episodes that follow, we will be breaking down specific aspects of clinical response to support clinicians so that they can continue to support their communities.

In response to the current Global situation impacting all of us right now, I made the decision to press pause on the typical interviews that had been airing to this point and focus on creating content that might be of service to the community right now. Over the next few weeks I will be sharing individual recorded episodes on topics that may be at the top of mind for many. Today, I share with you ways that I have been having to pivot in my practice and share some ways I have been managing my responses to the current crisis so that I can continue to show up as best I can for my clients and colleagues.

It is a delight to introduce my next guest, art therapist Deanna Barton. She is the owner of Artspiration, LLC. She speaks candidly about offering online art therapy services and includes how she has made tele-art therapy work for her without shying away from the nitty-gritty about what strategies benefit her business as well as her clients. She is also very forthcoming about what hasn't worked and using that information to guide a pivot in her business. She details how she arrived at the decision to discontinue a product she invested time and money in as well as her plans for future products. There is so much to learn from her experience that can be applied to our current global social climate.

I'm excited to welcome my next guest Amie Thomas to the show. She and I crossed paths early on in both of our careers. I took a position she had previously been in, but it wasn't until 2019 that we met. And we did so through blind email Networking. What?! Yes. An email sent to a colleague to learn more about them, their practice and ideal clients. It resulted in a coffee date between myself, Amie, and another colleague. It was there we realized our paths had been intertwined. I'm excited for her to share how she's been building her individual practice alongside her colleagues as they build theirs. She details how she navigates having all the collegiate benefits of a group but also with the autonomy of a solo practice.

I had been stalking my next guest on Instagram for a while before I ended up meeting her at a 3 day intensive Mandala training, created and taught by Carol Thayer Cox & Amy Bucciarelli that I had the great privilege of hosting at my practice in 2019. I was so excited when I realized that she was in my office space because I was watching what she created through her social media marketing. Ella Dufrene is an art therapist with a passion for integrating nature with her art therapy practice. She has created her practice offering expressive arts based retreat programs around the world. Although she is located in Miami, her retreats have been offered in Colorado, Georgia, Columbia, and Costa Rica. She shares about how she has taken imperfect action to create these retreats in her practice Lila Art Therapy.

I have to be completely transparent here. I invited my next guests to the show because they are going to be teaching the 20 hour Mastering the Meaning of Mandalas Course at my practice April 17-19 2020. I took the course last year and was blown away by how much I learned and how it changed the lens in which I view the world including client artwork.
Carol Thayer Cox is a retired board-certified art therapist, educator, and writer. She is former faculty of the graduate art therapy program at George Washington University, was the assistant director there for 10 years, and has taught at Vermont College of Norwich University and Pratt Institute of Art & Design. She is the author and editor of many works. (See resources below for links to several books available on Amazon.) She seeks to understand how communication, whether through art, dance, music, or words can offer healing.
Amy Bucciarelli is a board certified art therapist and Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor. She and Carol have been co-teaching the course on Mandalas together for several years, after being trained and supervised by Carol. Amy has used mandalas in her personal self-exploration and as an effective tool with a variety of patients including those experiencing various types of addictive behaviors, psychiatric illness, and in medical facilities. She is currently on the faculty of the University of Florida's Center for the Arts in Medicine https://arts.ufl.edu/academics/center-for-arts-in-medicine/ where she teaches courses about arts in health, creative theory, compassion, design thinking, and innovation. She also runs Art & Acupuncture workshops and Therapeutic Hand Paper-making workshops. She holds the belief that creativity is a lifestyle that promotes personal balance and well-being.
