Live at the shop! This one was a special one for many reasons, we had our 7th annual Charity Golf Scramble, live auctions, and a whole hog served by the one and only, Malcom Reed. Malcom started "HowtoBBQright" over 15 years ago, and today Spence is sitting down with he and his team to learn a little more about what goes on behind the scenes with big barbecue! Being their first time at the Rolling Thunder Headquarters, we had to show them a good time with a huge turnout!

When Malcom first heard about this event, they not only wanted to particiapte - but donate a whole hog and 16 butts to feed everyone at the event! We can't thank Malcom, his wife, and his team members enough for their time and the amazing food.

In this episode, Rob and RT Bailey are on the back porch of Feathers Chapel to talk about the Nancy's Vision Youth Turkey Hunt that took place in Pennsylvania the last weekend of April. RT went up to PA to spend time with Jeff and Hunter Wallis and Josh Grossenbacher and film the weekend. It was a special time.

Nancy’s Vision was created in memory of Nancy Rucker Wallis, who passed away unexpectedly in April 2020.  Her love of the outdoors, in particular her interest in her son Hunter’s outdoor passions and career, led naturally to the creation of Nancy’s Vision Youth Turkey Hunt.  Nancy dedicated her life to a career in the medical field because of her compassion for others, especially children.  Her years as a pediatric nurse created a lifelong desire to help sick children and subsequently led to the decision to donate all proceeds from this hunt to the Catch-A-Dream Foundation.  The Catch-A-Dream-Foundation, based in Starkville, Mississippi, grants once-in-a-lifetime hunting and fishing experiences to children 18 years old or younger who have life-threatening medical conditions.

In this episode, we are joined by our good buddy, David Hawley, on the back porch of Feathers Chapel to catch up on the season so far and to talk about hunting educated birds, managing your property for healthier, more sustainable turkey populations, the resurgence of the turkey trumpet, the mission of the Wild Turkey Report, and about why you should never lock Black Betty without asking...

If you don't follow the Wild Turkey Report, you do yourself a disservice. It is a wealth of knowledge and an all around great resource. David is passionate about turkeys now, but he's even more passionate about turkeys in the future. A legacy matters. Passing down skills and a love of the wild turkey to future generations is the only thing that will ensure that we'll still be in the woods in early spring waiting on a gobble.

Alright - you're going to want to take out a pencil and a piece of paper for this one. We were fortunate enough to get on the line with one of the most interesting and influential people in the turkey world. Dr. Mike Chamberlain a.k.a the Wild Turkey Doc. Dr. Chamberlain is a Terrell Professor in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at the University of Georgia. His research and the insights we gather from the data are significantly influencing the way that we think about turkey movement, behavior, and population. We discuss various topics including turkey behavior, trapping and transponder research efforts, nest predators and predator control, predation on turkeys by the great horned owl, and about turkey hunting in general.

We hope to get the Wild Turkey Doc on the podcast for an episode in the future. If we didn't touch on a particular topic you'd like to hear us discuss, please let us know and we'll try to get it in in a subsequent episode!

After being stood up the night before, Rob and Spence finally catch up with Brandon Pendergrass and Jeff Lovan of the Chasing Spring Project. If you've been following along, you know that things have been pretty "tough" for the guys at their spring quarters in Hawaii. As a matter of fact, the spring just about couldn't be getting off to a better start for this bunch and we're excited to share more about what they've got going on.

2,500 miles off the western coast of the United States, Hawaii is much more than sand, surfing, and beaches. Hawaii is home to a thriving rainforest, tall mountain peaks, large cattle ranches, and some world class turkey hunting. Hard to beat that!

What if you set up for a podcast and no one came? You'd get episode 37. We were set to talk to our buddies Jeff Lovan and Brandon Pendergrass from Chasing Spring but they got held up in the airport ahead of the Hawaii turkey hunt. So instead of shutting it down, Ben, Rob and their father Greg Kinney turned the beagles loose. We talked a little bit about turkey hunting, field care for your dog, and the hard conversation of when to retire a dog. This ain't the main course but consider it an appetizer for Rolling Thunder Thursdays. Hopefully we can catch up with the boys, soon!

In this episode, Rob sits down with the whole gang at Mallard Estates Outfitter in Brownsville, TN to talk about how the season has been so far and what it takes to be an outfitter. It isn't just showing up and killing ducks, you have to be a booking agent, a farmer, a carpenter, a welder, an electrician, a psychiatrist (bartender), a chauffer, a comedian, and eventually you get to be a duck hunter. If you can't be all of those things, you have to assemble a team who is, and they've done just that. We hear from Blake and Monte McWilliams, among others, and learn about the history of Mallard Estates and about how far they have come in just a few years.
