What is the biggest trial you've had to overcome to get where you are at today?

I have been a victim of perfection paralysis for so many years of my life. It's caused me to doubt myself, hesitate and miss opportunities that I really wanted. Learning to let go of that need to be perfect, be real & true to myself, and to take messy action on my goals has gotten me further than trying to be perfect ever did.

What do you believe in the most?

I believe that our trials are meant to become our strengths. We go through challenges and its up to us to learn from them so we can turn around and help someone else.

What defines you as a person?

This is a tough one. I am ever-evolving, we all are. I feel like our purpose shifts many times throughout life and that I can't necessarily fit myself into one single definitive category. What I do know is that I want to be someone who makes a positive impact on others and empowers them to reach their own potential.

During this time of COVID-19, what do you wish people knew?

We are being given the gift of time right now. And people have a choice. You can either live in fear or laziness during this time or you can come out stronger than you were before. This is your chance to completely change your life. Also, you can thrive through this! Keep a routine, focus on the positive, move your body, eat mindfully, prioritize sleep, stay hydrated, connect with others, progress in as many areas of your life as you can - read, organize, plan, build yourself from the inside out.

If people are struggling to find their "why" or purpose in life, what advice would you give someone? Ask yourself: what do you want to be remembered for?

Your purpose isn't necessarily a business. It's what makes you feel most fulfilled in life.

How do you change your mindset?

Give yourself permission to feel all the feels. And then practice gratitude. It's damn near impossible to be angry, scared or upset when you are truly grateful for this life and all the opportunities we have.

How do you practice self discipline? and hard work?

Begin with the end in mind. Be so focused on your intentions and the result you'll achieve. You'll be jumping at the chance to get to work!

What routines or habits have helped you be positive and successful? in health or in other areas? Journaling, meditation, gratitudes, daily walks, affirmations, finding mentors who I aspire to be like. Recognizing how I feel when I'm practicing good habits vs how I feel when I fall off the wagon with my habits

How can the listeners reach out to you? *

In 2011,

Vulcain Yengo created an entrepreneurship school in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo called Entraide. Entraide teaches entrepreneurs how to start and run their own businesses. The subjects taught at Entraide are finance, marketing, advertising, and planning. Since 2011 hundreds of individuals have gone through Entraide and started successful businesses. Anabel, one of the individuals that went through that school, started a phone charging kiosk. It was a successful stand alone business. But when he decided he wanted to franchise the business it failed. Not because of determination or hard work ethic but because his business relied on gas generators and the power grid, two very unreliable sources in Congo.

In 2018,

Vulcain Yengo reached out to UVU Enactus with the hopes to innovate Anabel’s business and ensure it’d be successful. Sam Dauphinee and Beau Bennett were co-project leads. They researched possible solutions that could revolutionize Anabel’s business. After months of research together they came up with 3 different business models which were all centered around solar panels and renewable energy. Professor Kevin Castle, Sam Dauphinee, and Beau Bennett, received a grant to go to Congo and work hand in hand with Anabel and other entrepreneurs studying at Entraide, to see how they could help. Once they arrived, they spent the first 2 days of their trip walking the streets, side by side with the Congolese entrepreneurs to find out the best solution. They interviewed people, families, and businesses to figure out the correct solution. By the end of the 2nd day Beau and Sam came to the conclusion that they needed to disregard two of the business models and focus on the 3rd, which was to innovate the existing phone charging kiosk.

By listening to the problem of people in the streets, and to Anabel’s story of his unsuccessful franchise, Sam and Beau realized Anabel had built a business that was an important factor for the success of other businesses in the city. Through brainstorming, Beau, Sam and all of the entrepreneurs including Anabel, came to the decision of making a solar powered phone charging kiosk. This would eliminate the problems Anabel was facing which was; relying on the power grid, using a gas generator, and having an immobile kiosk.

Working together they made plans of what the kiosk would look like, the dimensions, how the business model would change, the financial structure, marketing plan, how to map out the electrical, and the maintenance of the kiosks. The next 4 days was focused on building a prototype kiosk that figured out all the information to make this business work.

In 2019,

UVU Enactus took this project one step further and wanted to multiply the amount of kiosks that were in Brazzaville. To do this UVU Enactus came up with 2 projects that would greatly increase this goal. 1.) They wanted to raise more capital to fund more kiosks and 2.) They wanted to implement lean manufacturing principles to make a smoother and more reliable system to building the kiosks.

The future

holds big things for this project. With 21 kiosks now fully financed that brings 21 entrepreneurs and their families out of poverty. In a matter of 6 months that 21 will double into 42 kiosks. Then each 6 months after that the number of kiosks will grow by 21. The projection is that Brazzaville, Republic of Congo will be saturated at 100 kiosks which will take a period of 2 years to achieve. In two years time that will bring 105 kiosks in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo earning revenues of almost $2 million per year and growing into new countries in Africa.
